Sama halnya dengan simple present tense , dalam simple past tense juga ada yang disebut dengan kalimat nominal dan juga kalimat verbal . Apa sih yang dimaksud dengan kalimat nominal dan kalimat verbal itu? Mari kita bahas satu persatu.

Kalimat Nominal

Pada kalimat nominal itu bagian predikat biasanya diisi oleh to be . Dalam simple past tense , to be yang digunakan adalah “ was ” untuk subjek tunggal dan “ were ” untuk subjek jamak . Dan juga dalam kalimat ini tidak menggunakan verb , tetapi menggunakan noun, adjective , dan juga adverb .

Kalimat Verbal

Seperti namanya, kalimat verbal, maka dalam kalimat ini pasti akan menggunakan verb . Nah seperti yang kita semua ketahui, kata kerja atau verb dalam tenses itu ada 3 jenis ( verb 1, verb 2, verb 3 ), dan dalam simple past tense kata kerja atau verb yang digunakan adalah verb 2 . Yang mana artinya bukan lagi kata kerja dasar, tetapi sudah berubah bentuk karena sudah dipengaruhi oleh waktu (lampau).

Seperti yang sudah disebutkan di awal, untuk kata kerja atau verb yang digunakan dalam tenses ini dibagi menjadi 2, regular verb ( verb yang tinggal ditambahkan akhiran -ed ) dan irregular verb ( verb yang bentuknya berbeda dari verb dasar).

Namun, tidak seperti simple present tense , kata kerja atau verb dalam simple past tense tidak akan dipengaruhi oleh subjek yang digunakan . Jadi subjek apapun yang digunakan, bentuk verb nya akan tetap sama.

Ada satu hal lagi yang perlu digaris bawahi dalam kalimat verbal simple past tense yaitu jika kalimatnya berbentuk negatif dan tanya, maka kata kerja atau verb yang sebelumnya berbentuk lampau ( verb 2 ), kembali berubah ke kata kerja bentuk dasar atau verb 1 .

1. Menggunakan verb bentuk kedua

Jika dalam simple present tense , to be yang digunakan adalah am, are, is , maka dalam simple past tense yang digunakan adalah was dan were . Was untuk subjek I, she, he, it dan singular nouns , sedangkan untuk Were subjeknya adalah you, they, we , dan plural nouns .

3. Menggunakan keterangan waktu lampau

Waktu kejadian yang diceritakan dalam simple past tense terjadi dalam waktu spesifik, yaitu pada masa lampau . Sehingga time signal atau keterangan waktu yang digunakan biasanya last night, yesterday, 2 weeks ago, last month , dan lain-lainnya.

Kapan kita menggunakan Simple Past Tense?

Simple past tense digunakan untuk:

Menjelaskan suatu perbuatan, kejadian atau peristiwa yang terjadi dan berakhir di waktu lampau
Menjelaskan suatu perbuatan, kejadian atau peristiwa yang terjadi di waktu yang spesifik. Misalnya : Tahun lalu, satu jam yang lalu, minggu kemarin, dsb.
Menjelaskan suatu perbuatan, kejadian atau peristiwa yang di lakukan secara berulang di waktu lampau. Contoh : Saya pergi ke pasar setiap hari bulan kemarin . Setiap hari menjelaskan tindakan secara berulang, dan bulan kemarin menjelaskan waktu lampau (sudah terjadi).

1. Rumus Simple Past Tense (Verbal)

Dalam membuat kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris, sama saja seperti membuat kalimat dalam bahasa Indonesia. Hanya saja, pembentukan kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris memiliki aturan yang berbeda dengan kalimat dalam bahasa Indonesia.

A. Rumus Simple Past Tense Dalam Bentuk Positive (+)

Kalimat simple past tense dalam bentuk positif tidak jauh berbeda dengan kalimat simple present tense, hanya saja simple past tense menggunakan kata kerja bentuk kedua ( Verb-2 ) dan di ikuti dengan keterangan waktu lampau.

Rumus: S + V2 + O + Adverb of Time

Untuk lebih jelasnya, yuk kita lihat contoh kalimat simple present tense di bawah ini:

Seperti yang kita lihat dalam tabel diatas, kata kerja yang digunakan adalah kata kerja dalam bentuk ke-2.

Went (V2) dari kata Go (V1), Came (V2) dari come (V1), Ate (V2) dari Eat (V1) dsb.

Untuk menguasai simple past tense kita harus hafal kata kerja dalam bentuk ke-1, ke-2 dan ke-3 (akan digunakan untuk tense perfect tense).

B. Rumus Simple Past Tense Dalam Bentuk Negative (-)

Untuk membuat kalimat negatif, kita hanya menambahkan did not atau di singkat didn’t setelah subject, dan merubah kata kerja ke dalam bentuk kata kerja ke-1 (Verb-1).

Catatan: Kata kerja ke-2 (verb-1) hanya digunakan untuk kalimat positif.

Rumus: S + Didn’t + Verb-1 + Object + Adverb of Time

Jika tadi pada kalimat positif kita menggunakan verb-2 , pada kalimat negatif kita rubah verb-2 ke verb-1 karena Didn’t merupakan verb-2 dari bentuk verb-1 Don’t.

Catatan: Untuk semua subject dalam simple past tense, kita menggunakan did atau didn’t. Berbeda dengan simple present tense “ Does ” dipakai untuk orang ketiga tunggal ( He , She & It ) dan “ Do ” dipakai untuk subjek ( I , You , We & They )

C. Rumus Simple Past Tense Dalam Bentuk Interrogative (?)

Untuk membuat kalimat simple past tense dalam bentuk kalimat tanya (interrogative), kita cukup “Did” sebelum subject dan menambahkan tanda (?) di akhir kalimat.

Rumus: Did + S + V-1 + O + Adverb of Time

D. YES & No Answer

Untuk menjawab YES/NO questions kita bisa menggunakan 2 versi yaitu versi singkat & versi panjang.

Simple past tense menggunakan Was & Were digunakan untuk menunjukkan keberadaan suatu entitas (orang, objek, abstraksi) atau untuk menghubungkan suatu entitas dengan kualitas atau karakteristiknya.

Apabila dalam PAST TENSE tidak terdapat kata kerjannya, maka kita harus menggunakan “ WAS dan WERE ”. WAS untuk subyek I, He, She, & It , sedangkan WERE untuk subyek You, They, & We.

Rumus: S + Was/Were + Adjective/Noun/Adverb + Adverb of Time (Past)

B. Rumus Kalimat Negatif

Simple past tense digunakan untuk memberikan informasi mengenai suatu kejadian atau peristiwa yang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau atau yang sudah lalu.

Simple Past Tense – Penjelasan, Contoh Kalimat, Soal – Tenses merupakan aturan kata kerja dalam Bahasa Inggris yang digunakan menurut waktu terjadinya suatu aksi atau aktivitas. Tenses menurut waktunya dapat dibagi menjadi empat jenis (Present, Past, Future, dan Past Future) dimana setiap jenis tersebut memiliki empat jenis lagi, sehingga jumlah tenses seluruhnya ada 16 jenis. Berikut akan kita pelajari mengenai Simple Past Tense beserta soalnya.

Pengertian Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense adalah tense yang berfungsi untuk menyatakan suatu aksi atau kejadian yang terjadi di masa lalu (lampau).

Pola Kalimat:

(+) Subject + Verb 2 + Object (-) Subject + did + not + Verb Infinitive (Verb 1) (?) Did + Subject + Verb Infinitive (Verb 1)

Contoh Kalimat:

(Adik saya membelikan saya sebuah tas sekolah kemarin)

(Mereka tidak datang ke pesta ulang tahun saya kemarin malam)

Simple Past Tense biasanya diakhiri dengan kata kerja berakhiran –ed.

We invited them to our party but they decided not to come.

(Kami mengundang mereka tetapi mereka memutuskan untuk tidak datang)

The police stopped me on my way home last night.

She passed her examination because she studied very hard.

Selain itu, rumus dasar dan kunci jawaban juga akan disertakan untuk memudahkan pembelajaran. Simple past tense merupakan salah satu bentuk waktu dalam Bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menyatakan peristiwa atau kejadian yang terjadi di masa lampau.

Seperti halnya bentuk waktu lainnya, simple past tense memiliki pola penulisan yang khas. Secara umum, simple past tense dapat dibentuk dengan cara menggunakan subjek diikuti oleh kata kerja dalam bentuk kedua (verb 2) atau subjek diikuti oleh kata kerja bantu "was" atau "were" dan kata kerja non-verbal.

Kalimat verbal adalah kalimat yang mempunyai kata kerja.
