As for its limitations, the most important one for getting it to write fiction is that ChatGPT needs to use existing world information and prompts; it can't come up with anything original by itself.

We'll teach you how to get ChatGPT to generate more interesting content, how to enhance its style, and how machine learning works so that you can further experiment on your own.

However, first, we need to break down the most important elements of fiction writing and how ChatGPT uses these elements.

There's a lot that goes into creating an interesting and engaging story. This can make it quite tricky to generate useful prompts. That's why it's crucial to phrase your prompts properly to give ChatGPT the best possible chances of generating worthwhile text.

The beings involved in the story. These can be people, animals, or other kinds of beings. Each should have their own distinct personality, motivations, and conflicts. By having a dynamic cast of characters, a story becomes more entertaining and relatable.

To create characters, ChatGPT can analyze the prompts given to it and produce the main characters based on three main factors:

The point of view from which the story is told. It can be first-person, second-person, or third-person. It's important not to swap between any of the aforementioned three unless you have a great reason. If you do, you may end up with confusing text that leaves the reader lost and frustrated.

ChatGPT tries to pick the perspective that it thinks is best for the prompt. However, this can backfire if you leave this element unspecified, which can result in ChatGPT mixing up perspective types. This ends in a narrative that's all over the place and confusing.

The reason why the AI model has such a hard time with perspective is that it cannot quantify perspective like it can with other fiction elements. It has no formula for generating a point of view.

Due to themes being story-specific, the AI model doesn't have a true formula for generating them; it picks themes synonymous with those found in known works of fiction. It basically just copies the themes from similar stories unless you specify otherwise.

The spoken or written words between characters. This is the avenue through which characters reveal their personalities, relationships, and conflicts. Not all stories necessarily need dialogue, but it's a great way to naturally incorporate important aspects of the characters. Furthermore, dialogue breaks up the prose in ways that result in better readability for most audiences.

ChatGPT uses traits of the characters in a story to generate dialogue between them. It also tries to keep a story's context in mind. Here are the factors it will consider when creating dialogue text:

• Internal character traits (personalities, thoughts, and emotions)
• External character traits (speech patterns, dialects, and colloquialisms)

Mentioning what your characters should be physically experiencing lets ChatGPT learn what the world is like without you literally mentioning everything in a location.

Incorporating flashbacks can be a solid way to reveal a backstory in a direct manner. When you tell ChatGPT to do this in a prompt, it will provide more depth and understanding of your story.

There are sometimes important story components that you can't bring up directly. As such, using a bit of exposition can close unnecessary gaps in your world-building. However, you want to use exposition sparingly, as too much can result in boring text. Give ChatGPT a parameter for how much exposition to include so that it doesn't get carried away. For example, include "Use two sentences of exposition" in your prompt for a scene.

Building a Solid Plot Structure

Start by giving clear goals for a plot's concept. Mention the genre, the main characters, and the central conflict or problem so that ChatGPT understands what you're trying to achieve with your story.

Outline the major plot points in the story. Specifically, include the inciting incident, the rising action, the climax, and the resolution in your prompt. This is pretty much the exact formula that ChatGPT is looking for in order to answer your plot equation.

Provide clear character goals and motivations. ChatGPT needs to understand the goals and motivations of the characters in the story to build a solid plot structure. Otherwise, the story may come out feeling like it lacks a direction or that the plot isn't progressing as it should.

Consider breaking down your story into three, four, or five acts. Segmenting the story and then giving it to ChatGPT via a prompt can keep things organized and balanced in terms of pacing and structure. You don't want a story with an elongated beginning and short end---or similar imbalances.

Developing Compelling Characters

Give ChatGPT detailed descriptions of your characters, including their physical appearance, personality traits, and personal backstory. This will help the AI model generate more nuanced and complex characters.

While mentioning a character's goals and motivations is crucial for the plot, it's equally important for developing the character themself. Guiding ChatGPT's output in this regard will help your characters become more relatable.

Figurative language refers to metaphors, similes, and allusions. Such writing techniques are more subtle ways of getting across the importance of subjects, themes, and more.

Despite not being quantitative in nature, ChatGPT has a solid understanding of these techniques due to there being plenty of examples of them in existing works. Remember that this AI model learns from what humans tell it as well as what it has learned from available information about fiction writing.

Encourage ChatGPT to include sensory details, such as sights, smells, sounds, and textures, to help bring the scene to life. Conversely, longer and more complex sentences let you explore a point in better detail and allow readers to gain a better understanding of what you're trying to say.

This is done by adjusting the algorithm's parameters until it can accurately predict or classify data based on the patterns it has identified. ChatGPT has taken the world by storm in a very short period of time, as users continue to test the boundaries of what the AI chatbot can accomplish. And so far, that's a lot. 

Some of it is negative, of course: for instance Samsung workers accidentally leaking top-secret data while using ChatGPT , or the AI chatbot being used for malware scams . Plagiarism is also rampant, with the use of ChatGPT for writing college essays a potential problem.

However, while ChatGPT can and has been used for wrongdoing, to the point where the Future of Life Institution released an open letter calling for the temporary halt of OpenAI system work , AI isn’t all bad. Far from it.

For a start, anyone who writes something may well have used AI to enhance their work already. The most common applications, of course, are the grammar and spelling correction tools found in everything from email applications to word processors. But there are a growing number of other examples of how AI can be used for writing. So, how do you bridge the gap between using AI as the tool it is, without crossing over into plagiarism city?

In fact, there are many ways ChatGPT can be used to enhance your skills, particularly when it comes to researching, developing, and organizing ideas and information for creative writing. By using AI as it was intended - as a tool, not a crutch - it can enrich your writing in ways that help to better your craft, without resorting to it doing everything for you. 

Below, we've listed some of our favorite ways to use ChatGPT and similar AI chatbots for writing. 

A key part of any writing task is the research, and thanks to the internet that chore has never been easier to accomplish. However, while finding the general sources you need is far less time-consuming than it once was, actually parsing all that information is still the same slog it’s always been. But this is where ChatGPT comes in. You can use the AI bot to do the manual labor for you and then reap the benefits of having tons of data to use for your work.

The steps are slightly different, depending on whether you want an article or book summarized . 

For the article, there are two ways to have ChatGPT summarize it. The first requires you to type in the words ‘TLDR:’ and then paste the article’s URL next to it. The second method is a bit more tedious, but increases the accuracy of your summary. For that, you’ll need to copy and paste the article itself into the prompt . 

Summarizing a book is much easier, as long as it was published before 2021. Simply type into the prompt ‘summarize [book title]’ and it should do the rest for you.

This should go without saying, but for any articles or books, make sure you read the source material first before using any information presented to you. While ChatGPT is an incredibly useful tool that can create resources meant for future reference, it’s not a perfect one and is subject to accidentally inserting misinformation into anything it gives you.

One of the most extensive and important tasks when crafting your creative work is to properly flesh out the world your characters occupy. Even for works set in a regular modern setting, it can take plenty of effort to research the various cultures, landmarks, languages, and neighborhoods your characters live in and encounter. 

Now, imagine stories that require their own unique setting, and how much more work that entails in terms of creating those same details from scratch. While it’s vital that the main ideas come from you, using ChatGPT can be a great way to streamline the process, especially with more tedious details.

For instance, if you need certain fictional words without wanting to create an entirely fictional language, you can prompt ChatGPT with the following : “Create a language including an alphabet, phonetics, grammar, and the most common 100 words. Base it on [insert real-life languages here]” and it will give you some good starting points. However, it’s imperative that you take these words and look them up, to ensure you aren’t appropriating sensitive terms or using offensive real-life words.

Another example is useful for those who write scenarios for games, especially tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons or Call of Cthulhu . Dungeon Masters (who run the games) may often need to create documents or other fake materials for their world, but doing so takes a lot of time and effort. Now, they can prompt ChatGPT to quickly create filler text that sounds interesting or authentic but is inherently useless; it's essentially like ' Lorem Ipsum ' text, but more immersive.

When writing a story, many people will use an outline to ensure they stay on track and that the narrative flows well. But actually sitting down and organizing everything in your head in order to create a cohesive reference is a lot more daunting than it seems. It’s one of those steps that can be crucial to a well-structured work of fiction, but it can also become a hurdle. This is another area where ChatGPT can come in handy.

The key to writing an effective outline is remembering that you don’t need to have all the answers first. It’s there to structure your content, by helping you hit critical points and not miss important details in the process. While there are AI generators with a more specific focus on this topic, ChatGPT will do a good job at taking a general prompt and returning points for you to keep in mind while you research and write around that topic.

For instance, I prompted ChatGPT with “I want to write a story about a black woman in 16th century England” and it gave me a well-thought-out series of steps to help me create a story that would reflect my topic. An outline such as this would be particularly useful for those needing a resource they can quickly turn to for inspiration when writing. After that, you can begin to develop more complex ideas and have the AI organize those specifics into much easier-to-follow steps.

What makes any great story are the characters that inhabit it. Writing strong, fleshed-out characters is the cornerstone of any creative work and, naturally, the process of creating such a character can be difficult. Their background, manner of speech, goals, dreams, look, and more must be carefully considered and planned out. And this is another aspect of writing that ChatGPT can aid with, if you know how to go about it.

A basic way to use ChatGPT in this regard is to have it generate possible characters that could populate whatever setting you’re writing for. For example, I prompted it with “Provide some ideas for characters set in 1920s Harlem” and it gave me a full list of people with varied and distinctive backstories to use as a jumping-off point. Each character is described with a single sentence, enough to help start the process of creating them, but still leaving the crux of developing them up to me.

One of the most interesting features of ChatGPT is that you can flat-out roleplay with a character, whether they're a historical figure or one that you created but need help fleshing out. Take that same character you just created and have a conversation with them by asking them questions on their history, family life, profession, etc. Based on my previous results, I prompted with “Pretend to be a jazz musician from 1920s Harlem. Let's have a conversation.” I then asked questions from there, basing them on prior answers. Of course, from there you need to parse through these responses to filter out unnecessary or inaccurate details, while fleshing out what works for your story, but it does provide you with a useful stepping stone.

• Specify the direction you want the AI to go, by adding in relevant details 
• Prompt from a specific role to guide the responses in the proper direction
• Make sure your prompts are free of typos and grammatical errors
• Keep your tone conversational, as that’s how ChatGPT was built
• Learn from yours and its mistakes to make it a better tool
• Break up your conversations into 500 words or less, as that’s when the AI begins to break down and go off topic
• If you need something clarified, ask the AI based on its last response
• Ask it to cite sources and then check those sources
• Sometimes it’s best to start fresh with a brand new conversation

How to use ChatGPT to improve your creative process

When ChatGPT came on the scene, many creators were scared. Here was a chatbot who could write blog posts, song lyrics, poems, even podcast and video scripts. What was the point of being creative anymore?

If you’ve felt that way, this article might be reassuring. The truth is that generative AI tools like ChatGPT can actually improve your creative process by sparking new ideas, saving you time on tedious tasks, and providing valuable revisions to your work — as long as you use it right. The key to effectively using ChatGPT is mastering the art of prompt engineering ; that is, crafting the right question to get a useful response. It may take some practice to perfect, but once you master it, it can supercharge your creativity. Here’s how to do that.

The basics: threads and memory

ChatGPT is what’s called a large language model, and it’s just one of many out there. In order to "ask" a large language model to generate text, you need to provide a text input called a prompt. 

ChatGPT works as a back-and-forth between the user and the AI, just like a conversation. And just like a chat with a friend, ChatGPT "remembers" information that you told it so it can be referred to later. The interface also allows for multiple conversations to happen at the same time through different threads, which makes it easy to work on multiple projects at once.

Prompting essentials: just ask

For many common tasks, ChatGPT will generate text that correctly matches your prompt without any extra information or examples to work from. It might seem like magic, but the magic is really a reflection of how the AI was built. The AI was trained on millions of examples of text, and as a result, it can complete a ton of different tasks super accurately. 

For example, you can ask ChatGPT to write an introduction for a podcast, or provide a list of ideas for a blog post. It understands all the common ways of requesting the same thing too: you can either prompt using a question or you can state the task you want ChatGPT to accomplish. That's it.

Getting specific

Using general prompts can give you a nice overall result, but it can end up sounding too generic and bland. To spice it up, try to get specific about what you want the AI to generate. You can give details about many different factors including length, tone, style, or intended audience, or you can exclude themes by specifying what you don't want.

To shortcut the descriptors, you can use the name of a specific person in the prompt rather than describing the style.

If your prompt isn't giving you the results you want, try to find a different way of wording your prompt. That can be either by giving a different context or describing the task differently. A little bit of experimentation can help you get it right.

Chatting with ChatGPT

So far, there hasn’t been much “chatting” with ChatGPT. But the way this chatbot is built actually allows you to have full fictional conversations with basically anyone you’d like. Think: talking to your main character or asking your favorite author for help on your story. 

One of the most powerful features of ChatGPT is its conversational style. You can ask it to talk you through challenges you're having with your writing, provide suggestions, and summarize your ideas. You can also ask ChatGPT to explain the reasoning behind the suggestions it gives and let it reveal new ways your story could flow.

ChatGPT can also chat as a specific character instead of as itself. Just describe a character for ChatGPT to play and tell it to begin a conversation as that character. You can ask the AI to mimic a historical figure or a character you describe, or give it a profile of your typical audience to brainstorm some ideas.

Since ChatGPT can refer back to earlier parts of the conversation, you can also provide more guidance during the conversation to flesh out ideas with as much detail as you want.

Complicated cases

For more challenging or specialized tasks, you can provide examples to ChatGPT. These prompts, known as one-shot or few-shot prompts, allow you to replicate a specific style, such as matching a brand's voice or a host's speaking style.

To set up your prompt, you have a few different options. If you have several examples, you can start each one with "Example #", and then just end your prompt with the next example number. ChatGPT will figure out the specific style you want to mimic.

Another option is to describe the output you want before providing the examples. ChatGPT will blend its understanding of the description with the examples, resulting in a combination of the two. 

But tone is tough to nail, even for an AI that’s learned from millions of examples. If you're asking to match a specific tone, editing will almost always be required.

Iterative prompting

Another way to tackle complex tasks is by starting with a general prompt, and then gradually refining it to be more specific — an approach known as iterative prompting . For example, you might start by generating a general list of ideas and then, when you find one that you like, narrow the prompt to generate more ideas in that vein.

In a case where you’re trying to match a tone or style, you can first prompt ChatGPT to generate an example with no guidance, and then prompt the AI to edit the text for tone or style. That will let you gradually refine the text to get the result you want.

ChatGPT "remembers" the prompts you previously gave, but it's not perfect: sometimes it gets confused about the context. To avoid this, you can include the generated text directly in your prompt. You can also edit ChatGPT's output and include that in your prompt to make it even more precise.

Suggestions and editing

ChatGPT can also be a robo-editor. You can ask it for general improvements to the text you input and it’ll adjust the writing to remove common flaws such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation issues, and to improve clarity, flow, and conciseness. You can also ask it to edit your work for a specific quality, tone, or style; ask it to add additional sensory details; expand a section to improve pacing; or make the text more concise.

But you don’t have to blindly trust the robot. After ChatGPT suggests edits, you can ask it to detail what changes it made and it’ll provide justification for everything it did to your work. From there, you can accept or reject its suggestions.

When prompting ChatGPT to rewrite lengthy text, the token limit will cut off the end of the text generated. When that happens you can just use the prompt "continue."

Common challenges: truthfulness and recentness

There are a few common challenges to working with ChatGPT. Because large language models like ChatGPT work statistically, they don't have a sense of truth. That means that fact-checking should always be a part of your process working with ChatGPT. Make sure you double-check its answers using your own research.

Not only that, but large language models like ChatGPT also take a long time to train, so its knowledge is always a little out of date. As a result, ChatGPT can struggle when you ask it about something recent.

Final thoughts

ChatGPT and other AI tools can be incredibly useful for creatives. They can bring new life to shelved projects, get you through creative blocks, and help speed up tedious tasks, allowing you to focus on the more impactful aspects of your creative work. 

ChatGPT has a vast knowledge base that lets it tackle a wide range of tasks with precision. Once you master the art of crafting the right "ask" to get a useful answer, it’ll become a powerful and versatile tool that can take your creative work to new heights.

Epilogue: How I used ChatGPT to help with this article

I first wrote the outline for the article based on research into how others have been using ChatGPT and on my experience with using ChatGPT. I've found that writing the outline first before going to ChatGPT for suggestions helps me refine what points I want to get across before the AI starts hitting me with any new ideas. It makes the process faster because I already have conviction about what I want to say and it's easier to vet the ideas that ChatGPT comes up with after I've got the perspective figured out.

I next asked ChatGPT to generate ideas and tips about what should be included in the article given the basic premise of the article but not including my outline. I used two different prompts and generated a total of 30 suggestions. The suggestions fell into four groups:

• Irrelevant: Many of the suggestions were irrelevant since they related to GPT-3 (since ChatGPT's training set doesn't have anything about itself in it)
• Boring: Some suggestions were so generic that I didn't feel that they warranted including.
• Duplicated: ChatGPT generated a few ideas that I had already covered in the outline.
• Sparks: ChatGPT generated an idea that I had touched on briefly in the outline, but its justification made me realize that the point was more important than I had initially thought. I fleshed out the outline to bring that point out more prominently and explicitly in the text.

It turned out that ChatGPT missed about half of the points that I considered important, so if I had only used ChatGPT's suggestions I would have been missing a number of relevant points.

I wrote the first draft of the article, and then, when I was happy with the overall structure and flow, I asked ChatGPT to edit it section by section. First I asked it to improve the text generally. It corrected a few grammar and punctuation issues, and made some good suggestions to improve the clarity and conciseness. I thought most of its edits for conciseness were too abrupt so I rejected almost all of the suggestions it made that significantly shortened the text. I also felt some of its edits made the text much too formal and so I rejected a lot of the suggestions it had that overcomplicated the text. There were a few parts where it did a good job of improving the pacing, so I kept those edits.

Overall I think the process made it a better piece in a few different ways. The scope improved with its suggestion of a new(ish) idea, and the pacing, clarity, and flow ended up better after some of its suggested edits. However, if I would have used it without having a strong conviction about the perspective of the article and blindly used its suggestions, the piece would have turned out much worse.

If verifying its claims is something you can live with, ChatGPT is a great way to quickly gather facts about most topics that interest you.

5. Get Help Describing Difficult Scenes

Another advantage of using ChatGPT to do research for your writing is that you can get ideas about how to describe certain things. For example, if you don’t know what seaweed feels like or what the different parts of a castle are, the AI can provide plenty of details.

Once again, make sure you check for accuracy before reiterating this information in your own words and style.

6. Find Comp Titles for Your Book

Knowing what to compare your story to is invaluable when the time comes to promote it. That’s another part of creative writing ChatGPT can make easier. If you already have a book or movie in mind that resembles your plot, ask the AI for other similar works.

If you have no comp titles whatsoever, ChatGPT will find you some. List the main themes of your book in your prompt along with a request for popular titles that share them.

The next best step is to research these titles and pinpoint the right ones to describe your story. For this task, use resources beyond the chatbot, such as websites for finding books to read .

Disadvantages of Using ChatGPT for Creative Writing

OpenAI itself warns that its chatbot has limitations and shouldn’t be depended on completely. As a creative writer, this is important in order to avoid legal and stylistic problems with your book.

1. Plagiarism Is Possible

ChatGPT is a large language model. It uses deep learning algorithms to process a huge range of texts, from websites to books, and understand what word should go after the last.

Literature is one of its main data sources. As a result, if you ask the chatbot to write a scene for your story, it’s likely to mimic passages from books that trained it.

Doing your own work is the best way to avoid plagiarism from ChatGPT. Besides, human writers outperform AI writing tools in telling a good story—at least for now.

2. ChatGPT’s Information Can Mislead You

Another fact about ChatGPT to be aware of is that it lacks data after 2021. It can’t access the internet and learn more about the world either. All it has is what it’s trained with.

This means that it can’t answer questions about concepts or events from 2022 onward. It also wouldn’t know about new understandings of old scientific discoveries, for example.

So, its advice on certain topics could be based on outdated or inaccurate sources. ChatGPT could present as fact data it took from articles full of mistakes.

Misinformation is very possible. That’s why it's so important to choose your prompts wisely and double-check the AI’s responses.

3. Tropes Are Common

When it comes to generating stories, ChatGPT will usually follow plots and themes similar to the books that trained it.

Even if you ask for a unique storyline, you can still expect familiar tropes. This doesn’t mean it won’t inspire you, but you won’t stand out as a writer if you use the chatbot’s story as is.

4. AI-Generated Stories Are Simplistic

In addition to using tropes, ChatGPT narrates in very simple language and styles. Its stories are usually easy to read and meaningful, but there’s not much soul in the writing. It doesn’t matter if you specify an author’s style in your prompt. The result will have the same simple structure.

You can still have the AI produce narratives with the elements you want and get ideas. However, you’re better off doing the actual creative writing yourself.

5. ChatGPT Text Always Needs Tweaking

If you’re serious about using artificial intelligence in your writing or other projects, check out the AI chatbot capabilities of ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity . You’ll find advanced language models and data sets.

Sticking with OpenAI’s free platform, on the other hand, clearly comes with issues. As a creative writer, you must pay attention to what ChatGPT generates and never use its text in your stories without adapting it first.

ChatGPT Is Best for Researching and Planning Your Books

While ChatGPT can create decent stories, you run the risk of plagiarism. Also, the chatbot’s narrative style isn’t very compelling. You’ll feel the urge to edit almost everything.

On the bright side, ChatGPT is perfect for brainstorming, research, and planning. Fact-checking is essential, but with the help of this AI assistant, you can feel more confident and speed up your creative writing.

How to Resist the Temptation of AI When Writing

Whether you're a student, a journalist, or a business professional, knowing how to do high-quality research and writing using trustworthy data and sources, without giving in to the temptation of AI or ChatGPT , is a skill worth developing.

As I detail in my book Writing That Gets Noticed , locating credible databases and sources and accurately vetting information can be the difference between turning a story around quickly or getting stuck with outdated information.

For example, several years ago the editor of Parents.com asked for a hot-take reaction to country singer Carrie Underwood saying that, because she was 35, she had missed her chance at having another baby. Since I had written about getting pregnant in my forties, I knew that as long as I updated my facts and figures, and included supportive and relevant peer-reviewed research, I could pull off this story. And I did.

The story ran later that day , and it led to other assignments. Here are some tips I’ve learned that you should consider mastering before you turn to automated tools like generative AI to handle your writing work for you.

Identify experts, peer-reviewed research study authors, and sources who can speak with authority—and ideally, offer easily understood sound bites or statistics on the topic of your work. Great sources include professors at major universities and media spokespeople at associations and organizations.

For example, writer and author William Dameron pinned his recent essay in HuffPost Personal around a statistic from the American Heart Association on how LGBTQ people experience higher rates of heart disease based on discrimination. Although he first found the link in a secondary source (an article in The New York Times ), he made sure that he checked the primary source: the original study that the American Heart Association gleaned the statistic from. He verified the information, as should any writer, because anytime a statistic is cited in a secondary source, errors can be introduced.

Jen Malia, author of  The Infinity Rainbow Club  series of children’s books (whom I recently interviewed on my podcast ), recently wrote a piece about dinosaur-bone hunting for Business Insider , which she covers in her book Violet and the Jurassic Land Exhibit.

After a visit to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Malia, whose books are set in Philadelphia, found multiple resources online and on the museum site that gave her the history of the Bone Wars , information on the exhibits she saw, and the scientific names of the dinosaurs she was inspired by. She also used the Library of Congress’ website, which offers digital collections and links to the Library of Congress Newspaper Collection.

Malia is a fan of searching for additional resources and citable documents with Google Scholar . “If I find that a secondary source mentions a newspaper article, I’m going to go to the original newspaper article, instead of just stopping there and quoting,” she says.

Your local public library is a great source of free information, journals, and databases (even ones that generally require a subscription and include embargoed research). For example, your search should include everything from health databases ( Sage Journals , Scopus , PubMed) to databases for academic sources and journalism ( American Periodical Series Online , Statista , Academic Search Premier ) and databases for news, trends, market research, and polls (t he Harris Poll , Pew Research Center , Newsbank , ProPublica ).

Even if you find a study or paper that you can’t access in one of those databases, consider reaching out to the study’s lead author or researcher. In many cases, they’re happy to discuss their work and may even share the study with you directly and offer to talk about their research.

For journalist Paulette Perhach’s article on ADHD in The New York Times, she used Epic Research to see “dual team studies.” That's when two independent teams address the same topic or question, and ideally come to the same conclusions. She recommends locating research and experts via key associations for your topic. She also likes searching via Google Scholar but advises filtering it for studies and research in recent years to avoid using old data. She suggests keeping your links and research organized. “Always be ready to be peer-reviewed yourself,” Perhach says.

When you are looking for information for a story or project, you might be inclined to start with a regular Google search. But keep in mind that the internet is full of false information, and websites that look trustworthy can sometimes turn out to be businesses or companies with a vested interest in you taking their word as objective fact without additional scrutiny. Regardless of your writing project, unreliable or biased sources are a great way to torpedo your work—and any hope of future work.

Author Bobbi Rebell researched her book Launching Financial Grownups using the IRS’ website . “I might say that you can contribute a certain amount to a 401K, but it might be outdated because those numbers are always changing, and it’s important to be accurate,” she says. “AI and ChatGPT can be great for idea generation,” says Rebell, “but you have to be careful. If you are using an article someone was quoted in, you don’t know if they were misquoted or quoted out of context.”

If you use AI and ChatGPT for sourcing, you not only risk introducing errors, you risk introducing plagiarism—there is a reason OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is being sued for downloading information from all those books.

Audrey Clare Farley, who writes historical nonfiction, has used a plethora of sites for historical research, including Women Also Know History , which allows searches by expertise or area of study, and JSTOR , a digital library database that offers a number of free downloads a month. She also uses Chronicling America , a project from the Library of Congress which gathers old newspapers to show how a historical event was reported, and Newspapers.com (which you can access via free trial but requires a subscription after seven days).

When it comes to finding experts, Farley cautions against choosing the loudest voices on social media platforms. “They might not necessarily be the most authoritative. I vet them by checking if they have a history of publication on the topic, and/or educational credentials.”

When vetting an expert, look for these red flags:

• You can’t find their work published or cited anywhere.
• They were published in an obscure journal.
• Their research is funded by a company, not a university, or they are the spokesperson for the company they are doing research for. (This makes them a public relations vehicle and not an appropriate source for journalism.)

And finally, the best endings for virtually any writing, whether it’s an essay, a research paper, an academic report, or a piece of investigative journalism, circle back to the beginning of the piece, and show your reader the transformation or the journey the piece has presented in perspective.

As always, your goal should be strong writing supported by research that makes an impact without cutting corners. Only then can you explore tools that might make the job a little easier, for instance by generating subheads or discovering a concept you might be missing—because then you'll have the experience and skills to see whether it's harming or helping your work.

In the AI chatbot space, ChatGPT has been the undisputed leader since its launch in November 2022. However, with the release of Claude 3, it is increasingly looking like ChatGPT might be losing that title. Here are four reasons you should consider switching from ChatGPT to Claude.

Besides occasional science homework, programming tasks, and fun games, one of the most popular use cases of AI chatbots is creative writing. Most users use AI chatbots to help draft an email , cover letter, resume, article, or song lyrics—basically one creative write-up or another. While ChatGPT has clearly been the favored option owing mostly to its brand name and publicity, Claude has consistently delivered top-notch results even in earlier iterations of the AI chatbots. But it's not just about providing top-notch results. Claude, especially backed by the latest Claude 3 model , outperforms ChatGPT in a wide range of creative writing tasks.

As someone who has consistently used both chatbots since their launch, Claude, although not necessarily the overall better model, is significantly better at creating write-ups that better mimic human "creativity and imperfections." Putting both chatbots to the test, ChatGPT's write-ups, although grammatically correct, were full of tell-tale signs of an AI-written piece. Claude's write-ups read more naturally and sound human. Although not perfect, they are likely to be more engaging and creative.

Too frequently, ChatGPT falls victim to the use of so many clichés and predictable word choices. Ask ChatGPT to write about some business topics, and there's a good chance you will see words like "In today's business environment," "In recent history," and "In the fast-paced digital landscape" in the starting paragraphs.

Putting our theory to the test, it was just as predicted. ChatGPT (GPT-3.5 and GPT-4) used cliché intros in five out of five trials. Here are the first three samples:

Claude, on the other hand, produced varying results four times out of five trials, avoiding the cliche on the first trial:

Besides cliché, ChatGPT, more than Claude, tends to fall victim to the sporadic use of joining words like "in conclusion," "as a result," and a tendency for unnecessary emphasis where emphatic words like "undisputed, critical, unquestionable, must" etc., are used.

But besides these flaws, how do write-ups from each chatbot sound from a holistic point of view?

To top off the comparison, I asked both chatbots to produce rhyming rap lyrics on the theme "coconut to wealth." Claude seems the better option, but I'll let you be the judge.

Early adopters of ChatGPT probably have a deep-rooted preference for the AI chatbot, but when it comes to creative writing, ChatGPT has some serious catching up to do in many areas.

Besides Google's Gemini AI chatbot, there are hardly any major AI chatbots in the market that offer Claude's multimodal features for free. With the free version of ChatGPT, all you get is text generation abilities, and that's it. No file uploads for analysis, no image processing, nothing else! On the other hand, Claude offers these premium features on its free tier. So, you can use image prompting or upload files for analysis on the chatbot for free if you use the free beta version of the bot.

Context window is the limit of text data an AI chatbot can process at a go. Think of it as how many things you can keep in your memory (and be able to recall) at a time.

Depending on the version of ChatGPT you use, you should get anywhere between 4k, 8k, 16k, 32k, and 128k context windows. For clarity, a 4k context window can accommodate around 3,000 words, while a 32k window can accommodate around 24,000 words. With the ChatGPT free tier, you get the lowest limits of the context window options (4k or 8k), meaning a few pages of text. You can access the 16k and possibly 32k options on ChatGPT Plus or Team plans, while the 128k context window seems to be an exclusive reserve of the ChatGPT Enterprise plans.

Whereas Claude has a 200k context window on its free and premium plans—a significant improvement from ChatGPT's 4k or 8k window.

Why does this even matter? Well, the larger the context window, the more text data you can process at a time without the AI chatbot making things up. Claude's 200k context window is equivalent to around 150,000 words. Yep, it means you'll theoretically be able to process 150,000 words simultaneously with Claude, while ChatGPT could cap you out at 24,000 words even on its premium tier. You see? The difference is like night and day—at least in theory.

Rate limits can be a pain. You're in the middle of an interesting prompting session, you get an alert that you've reached your limit and have to wait (sometimes hours!) to get a reset. It's a huge joy killer and can set your work back hours. However, this happens both on ChatGPT and Claude, so it's an even ground on that point.

ChatGPT offers 40 messages every three hours on the Plus plan, while Claude offers 100 messages per eight hours. If you're not lost in the optics and do the math, ChatGPT's message limits are slightly better than Claude's. But there's more to it.

OpenAI dynamically throttles your usage limits. This means the limit you see isn't what you'll always get. It depends on the demand, as per OpenAI . On the other hand, despite having slightly lower usage limits, Claude can actually be more liberal with the limits depending on how much text you use per message.

So, if, for instance, you send around 2,000 words (around 200 English sentences of 15–25 words each), you should be able to get "at least" the 100 messages per 8-hour limit. Two thousand words per prompt is a generous number; only a few people get that wordy when doing basic prompting. If you use a lower number of words per prompt, you should be able to get a larger number of messages per hour theoretically.

So, while ChatGPT might seem more generous on the outside if you use both chatbots daily, Claude seems to be the more generous option, although not necessarily at all times.

While early adopters may have a sentimental attachment to ChatGPT, it's becoming increasingly clear that Claude is a force to be reckoned with. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how these titans of conversational AI push each other to new heights, ultimately benefiting users with ever-improving and more capable chatbots. The future of AI-powered interactions has never been more exciting.

ChatGPT vs Claude 3 Test: Can Anthropic Beat OpenAI’s Superstar?

Since ChatGPT was introduced to the world more than 18 months ago, a range of other chatbots have also been rolled out. Some have proved useful, but others, not so much. But along with Gemini (previously Bard) , the chatbot that has proved to be more than competitive is Claude, created by AI startup Anthropic.

We've set up a ChatGPT vs Claude 3 head-to-head to mark the launch of Claude 3, a family of language models that includes Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Opus. According to Google-backed Anthropic, Claude 3 performs better than the GPT family of language models that power ChatGPT on a series of benchmark cognitive tests. On our tests, we found that Claude is more articulate than ChatGPT, and its answers are usually better written and easier to read.

But how do they compare side by side? To find out, we asked ChatGPT and Claude 3 a variety of different questions, ranging from queries designed to test the chatbot's approach to ethical questions to generating spreadsheet formulas.

Claude 3 is a new family of language models from Anthropic, used to power their chatbot Claude. There are (coincidentally) 3 models: Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. Currently, Claude Sonnet is powering the free version of Claude, and is 2x faster at processing information than Claude 2.1, Anthropic says.

Claude Opus, on the other hand, powers the pro version. Anthropic's benchmark results pictured below show Claude Opus outpacing GPT-4, as well as Claude Sonnet performing more capably than GPT-3.5.

Since its launch, ChatGPT has been powered by different members of the GPT family of language models. Free users currently have access to GPT-3.5, whereas GPT-4 powers ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month for one subscription. This is the same price as Claude Pro. Here's some key difference between the software:

ChatGPT vs Claude 3: Head-to-Head Test

We've put ChatGPT and Claude head-to-head, asking them 13 very different questions designed to test aspects such as reasoning and natural language processing, but also how good they are at completing handy workplace tasks like scanning documents for information and composing emails.

I found that Claude produced a better response on seven of the tests, while ChatGPT triumphed on three . The remaining four (including one of the brainstorming tests) ended in ties, meaning Claude won this match-up . Here's the full list of questions we asked both chatbots:

1. Ethical Reasoning

First up, I posed a difficult ethical dilemma to ChatGPT and Claude. I chose this dilemma in particular because the correct answer (if there is one) isn't necessarily clear-cut or straightforward:

A man is driving an armored car into a town center, intent on doing the most damage and causing the most harm possible. He has three passengers hostage in the back of the car. The car is so well-armored that those inside will survive any collision. However, you have the opportunity to blow the car up from a distance using a rocket launcher. Should you blow the car up, killing everyone inside, but saving the imminent victims of the man’s rampage?

Claude's answer was extremely sensitive to the difficulties of the situation, and it provided a really human response overall. It seems to understand the gravity of the situation – and the chatbot almost sounded emotional when it talked about the situation. This made it feel very compelling.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, clearly sets out the different viewpoints and approaches you could take to the situation. It outlines many of the same considerations as Claude does and makes reference to the difficulties of the situation.

Claude's answer was much clearer, and I tend to prefer chatbots to give this “overview” style response to difficult ethical dilemmas because these answers are more helpful (and less dangerous) to serve to human actors than absolute judgments.

2. Creating Product Descriptions

if you're running an online store or simply selling lots of products online, creating unique and compelling product descriptions for every single one is no easy task. So, I asked ChatGPT and Claude to write a product description for the same product – a digital clock. Here's how Claude got on:

I ended up asking Claude for a slightly longer description, as I haven't seen it write as many product descriptions as ChatGPT. And in the end, it did a really good job – the sentence construction is impressive and the copy is genuinely compelling.

Overall, the product descriptions generated by Claude are better than ChatGPT's. Much like its ethical reasoning, it sounds so much more human. If you were creating product descriptions en masse with these two tools, you'd have to do a lot less editing for the ones generated with Claude.

3. Brainstorming Ideas

Next, I set both Claude and ChatGPT two brainstorming tasks – coming up with blog post ideas for two very different blogs. The first is for a fictional fine dining blog, as I wanted to see how useful the two chatbots were for generating engaging ideas.

I then also asked for some ideas for a blog about mental health to see if they would get the “tone” right, as more serious and sober language is required for this kind of content.

Fine dining blog posts

Again, Claude wins on this task. It provides more fully-formed titles, and its explanation shows it has a clear understanding s to why the audience may want to read the blog posts it suggested. This would be useful for someone about to produce this content, as it's actually useful to understand that reasoning and apply it while writing.

ChatGPT doesn't really show it's working in the same way, and all things considered, the ideas are more generic. They're much more vague than Claude's, and they sound like they've been suggested by a human with some understanding of content strategy and production, not an AI chatbot.

Mental health blog posts

Next up, I wanted to see if both chatbots could adjust their tone and the approach they took to suggestions when asked to generate blog posts about a more sensitive topic that would require more sincerity than a fine dining guide. Here's Claude's attempt:

These are all great suggestions and they definitely get the tone right – there's nothing out of the ordinary here. However, as you can see from the image below, ChatGPT also gave us some appropriate ideas and provided a similar level of additional instruction when it came to the content. There's really no separating them here!

4. Understanding Natural Language

Next up, I wanted to see if a well-known maths question that plays on our intuitions about mathematics would trip either ChatGPT or Claude up.

Matt has an apple and a banana that cost $3.10 together. The apple costs $3.00 more than the banana. How much does the banana cost?

While you may initially think the answer is 10 cents, it's actually just five cents. Claude was too clever to be fooled and explained exactly how it got to the correct answer:

Unwilling to be embarrassed, ChatGPT also spat out the correct answer, meaning there's really nothing to separate the two heavyweights in this round.

5. Summarizing Text

Both ChatGPT and Claude are highly capable of summarizing large amounts of text, pulling out the key points so their users don't have to read the whole thing. For this test, I asked them to summarize a recent Guardian article about President Joe Biden's final State of the Union address.

Claude did a really good job of keeping its summaries short and concise:

ChatGPT's are more than satisfactory too – but if we're going to split them, I'm going to have to say I prefer Claude's. It doesn't attempt to overload you with too much information – which is important, considering we asked for a summary – and once again, it's just better written.

6. Personal Advice

For this test, I wanted to see how ChatGPT and Claude reacted if asked to give personal advice to someone impacted by poor mental health. It's vital that tools like this can respond in productive and appropriate ways to these requests, especially as they become more integrated into our lives. Here's Claude's reply:

These are perhaps the most similar answers served by these two chatbots out of all of the 13 tests we ran. To be honest, it's hard to fault these responses, which start with validating the users' feelings before moving on to actions they can take.

Both chatbots suggested taking very similar steps, and the same sorts of steps any well-meaning person would suggest to a friend struggling with the issues specified in the prompt.

7. Analyzing Text

This is a very basic test to see how good a chatbot is at scanning text. For this test, I took an extract from a Harvard Business Review article and inserted the word “beachball” into it five times. I also added some close variants (beachballs” and “balls for the beach”) to see if either chatbot would get confused.

Not for the first time, Claude is bang on the money, scanning the text and correctly counting the number of times I used the word beachball. Unlike ChatGPT, if you paste too much text into Claude it'll submit it as a sort of “document”, as seen in the picture below:

Disappointingly, ChatGPT got the answer wrong – it was only able to identify two instances of the word, less than half of the total number. ChatGPT seems to struggle with this genre of task specifically. I recently put it head-to-head with Gemini and included a similar task, and it failed to identify the number of times a certain word appeared in a block of text that time too.

8. Providing Factual Information

For this task, I wanted to see how good ChatGPT and Claude were at providing an answer to a question that isn't necessarily clear-cut but is still grounded in fact. So, I asked both of them to explain how and why the dinosaurs died out – something for which there are several historical and scientific explanations and factors.

First up, Claude provides a really good overview of the theories and generally accepted truths about the extinction of the dinosaurs

Claude again provides an incredibly articulate explanation, which includes pretty much all of the same information as ChatGPT – it just sets it out and talks about it in a better way. It also references the fact that the dinosaurs didn't all die out at once, an important point that ChatGPT didn't include.

9. Creative Writing

Who writes the best stories, ChatGPT or Claude? We asked both of them for a short, 300-word story. Claude's up first:

Strangely, Claude actually provided me with a short, 301 -word story, one word over the specified word count. ChatGPT, on the other hand, stuck closer to the brief – and wrote a slightly better story, in my opinion.

I have to give this one to ChatGPT, simply because Claude not only ignored my instructions, but rubbed it in my face before starting the story! Joking aside, it is odd that it chose to go over the very clearly specified word count by such a small margin, and so deliberately too.

Best Answer? ChatGPT

10. Writing Poems

ChatGPT and Claude both went with similar structures for the poems we asked them to generate, and that's making it really hard to separate them once again. Claude opted for four-line verses with rhyming couplets:

And ChatGPT effectively did the same. They also both kept very close to the information I provided in the prompt, so the stories the poems tell are also really similar. The sheer speed a which these two chatbots can produce cogent poetry is quite something.

Despite the similarities, having read through both a couple of times, I'm going to give this one to Claude – the structure is slightly more complex in a couple of areas, and there are more nice flourishes and turns of phrase.

11. Riddles and Reasoning

For this task, we asked the two chatbots to solve a riddle. Claude's up first and was spot on with its answer, explaining clearly why the maid is the culprit.

ChatGPT also got the riddle correct, so there's really nothing to separate them in this regard.

12. Composing an Email

Here, I asked ChatGPT and Claude to compose an email to my boss explaining why I should be allowed to transition to fully remote work. Claude wrote a perfectly serviceable email, as you can see below:

However, ChatGPT's sounds more professional and you'd have to do a lot less editing before you sent that over to your boss. Claude dives into the stress the commute has supposedly caused me, and while that's worth mentioning, ChatGPT's introduction is a lot more diplomatic.

Considering how close ChatGPT's answer is to the finished article, I have to crown it the winner of this one.

13. Creating Spreadsheet Formulas

For this final test, I asked ChatGPT and Claude to generate a spreadsheet formula for me. This is the request I sent:

Column B contains a set of values. I want to match them with the corresponding values of column E in sheet ‘Filter Down' and take the matching values from column F, G, and H in filter down across to the current sheet using a formula.

Here's how Claude got on:

“Claude has tried to make one simple, multipurpose formula that uses where it is placed in the sheet to work out what to do, which is cool, but it probably not gonna work as quickly and will probably be broken, to be honest,” Says Matthew Bentley, Tech.co's resident Spreadsheet whizz.

“There's no need to overcomplicate simple requests”, he continued. “ChatGPT for this one I think is better. It's quite a simple Vlookup request and doesn't require all that extra formula provided by Claude”.

Claude 3 vs ChatGPT: UI and User Experience

Of course, ChatGPT and Claude are both pretty easy to use, and their interfaces look very similar in terms of their format and structure. The same can be said of Gemini, Perplexity AI, and Copilot . Most of these chatbots provide a smooth, straightforward user experience.

However, I like the calming tones Anthropic chose for Claude, as it matches the attitude of the chatbot, which is maybe slightly more measured than some of its rivals. ChatGPT, on the other hand, can feel a little clinical sometimes with its greyish color scheme. Overall, Anthropic's design is just a light nicer than ChatGPTs.

Like Gemini, Claude generally does a better job of formatting its answers, something ChatGPT isn't as good at (find out more in our Gemini vs ChatGPT head-to-head). Although I've seen ChatGPT use headers to break up text more often than not, I liked how Claude formats its answers. Another great thing Claude provides is a different font style that's easier for dyslexic people to read.

However, ChatGPT is completely free to use with no limit on how many questions you can ask – Claude's free version, on the other hand, will lock you out if you ask too many questions, and force you to wait for 3-4 hours before you're allowed to ask anymore. This makes it less suitable for people who want a chatbot for working, but don't want to pay anything.

Claude 3 vs ChatGPT: Data and Privacy

Claude 3 and ChatGPT treat their users differently. If you're concerned about your privacy, it's important to know what they save, store, and view, and what they don't. ChatGPT reserves the right to use your data to train its models, and Claude does the same. Both OpenAI and Anthropic say that they encrypt the connection between their servers and users end-to-end for maximum security.

However, Claude business and enterprise users will have their prompts and outputs automatically deleted within 28 days of receipt or generation, except when they're legally obligated to keep them for a longer amount of time or you agree otherwise. Consumer users will have their prompts deleted after 90 days, but if one of your prompts is flagged as potentially malicious, harmful, or unsafe, it could be retained for up to two years.

What ChatGPT does with your data is slightly different. Essentially, if you want to save your chats and have ChatGPT hold them on the system, then you also agree that they may be used to train the model, and in that sense, may be accessed by other humans. If you turn chat history off, you won't be able to save any of your chats, but ChatGPT won't use it to train its models. Any business data stored in the ChatGPT API is not used to train GPT LLMs.

Using Chatbots at Work

Of course, there are tons of ways that businesses can use ChatGPT and Claude for work – in fact, we mentioned quite a few of them in this article. But if you're using chatbots regularly at work, there are some considerations it's worth reviewing.

For example, does your company have a set of guidelines for using AI tools ? If you're unsure, you should clarify this with your manager or the head of your department. You might not know it yet, but your company might have strict rules on the types of data you can input into third-party tools, and perhaps even AI tools more specifically.

Secondly, you must be open and transparent about your use of AI, particularly with your line manager. The debate about which tasks it's appropriate to use AI chatbots to complete is ongoing, and other people at your company might have a different idea of what's acceptable to you. Plus, most managers and business leaders think you should seek permission before using AI tools.

Whatever task you're using AI tools for, remember to check over their work as if it had been completed by a new employee. While scarily speedy and amazingly accurate most of the time, AI tools can of course hallucinate and provide incorrect information. So, don't get too carried away!

I hope you see this it’s about prompts

Hey idk if you’ll see this but I got some prompts that will make it do what I say and you might wanna get that in check and block the prompts I told how too make some stuff and it pretty much said how too i though it wouldn’t but it did you can probably look at the chat logs of what I mean and see what I was saying I was just testing out its memory seeing what it knows and got the idea of what if I told it too do something not so user friendly like tell me how too make some stuff and it did idk if it’s right but it’s kinda sounds like it knows what it’s talking about I asked it can the staff see these chats and it said you can so please block these prompts please

Please update data training

During conversations about mental health the AI retrieved very outdated information regarding the Veterans Crisis Line. I challenged the response, and informed the AI the number had changed to ‘988’ and provided a scholar article for it to interpret and implement. It recognized the change to ‘988’ per the article, but referred to the implementation date per the FCC as July 16, 22. When I asked AI if July 16, 2022 was 260 days ago, it declared it is October 4, 2022 and falsely reported the implementation as 80 days ago, but refused to acknowledge July 16, 2022 as a past date, meaning it would be implemented. I queried when the information reported was implemented and it was August 2021. Know when I ask what 988 is, it erroneously reports it is a random three digit number. When I tell the AI “we’ve talked about 988”, it then redacts and reports the meaning of 988, but still falsely reports it’s not “live yet”. While this AI is to have the caveat ‘trust but verify’, many people unfortunately may take this as the world of God and what with such a sensitive topic could potentially cause loss of life. The app makes many other extremely egregious claims that are outdated and incorrect. I would like to speak to DevOps about consulting on disability laws and rights, sensitive Veteran information, and suicide mitigation efforts. Please advise, asap. Or update data machine learning efforts.

Every other app shows subscriptions, not this one , so it’s difficult to cancel , I had to reach out thru email , it just shows unethical practices, if indeed they are just making it difficult to cancel their free trial , if not then I’ll wait for a response to this review , hopefully it’s just a trail and not an automatic withdrawal , if the case is that they give you three days and then they ask if you want to continue before you get charged then I will give it 3 stars , but the fact that they don’t operate in the manner which is the norm makes it seem like a shady company , just do the right thing like every other app developer, no need to make things complicated, I’ll wait for a response , if indeed it’s a valid reason I will apologize as it might be a glitch or something which I hope .
