The Many Meanings of Devoir
- Devoir Conjugated in the Indicative Mood
- Devoir Conjugated in the Conditional Mood
- Devoir Conjugated in the Subjunctive Mood
- Devoir in the Participle Mood
- There's No Imperative Mood for Devoir
- Devoir Can Be Confusing
The French verb devoir means "must," "to have to," or "to owe to." Essentially, it's used when you "have to" do something. Devoir is used very often in French and it has an extremely irregular conjugation that students need to memorize.
As with a number of French verbs, particularly the most useful ones, devoir can have different meanings. It is dependent on the context of the sentence and it can be confusing at times. Do not mistake the concept of "to have to" with the verb "to have" ( avoir ) . The notion of "to have to" means an obligation to do something. In contrast, avoir implies the possession of something.
It's easy to confuse devoir with falloir , which also implies an obligation or necessity. Falloir tends to be more formal, so you can use devoir in sentences similar to these:
- Dois-tu étudier ce soir? > Do you have to study tonight?
- Elles doivent manger. > They must / need to eat.
Devoir can also take on the meaning of probability or supposition, such as:
- Il doit rentrer avant le dîner. > He should / will probably be back before dinner.
- Nous devons gagner plus cette année. > We should earn more this year.
- Elle doit être à l'école. > She must be at school.
There are times when devoir can refer to an expectation or intention:
- Je devais aller avec eux. > I was supposed to go with them.
- Il devait le faire, mais il a oublié. > He was supposed to do it, but he forgot.
You can also use devoir to express fatalism or the fact that something is inevitable:
- Il devait perdre un jour. > He had to / was bound to lose one day.
- Elle ne devait pas l'entendre avant lundi. > She wasn't to hear it until Monday.
When used transitively (and thus not followed by a verb), devoir means "to owe":
- Combien est-ce qu'il te doit? > How much does he owe you?
- Pierre me doit 10 francs. > Pierre owes me 10 francs.
"Devoir" in the Infinitive Mood
The infinitive mood is devoir in its most basic form. The past infinitive can be used to modify another verb, so both are important to know. This is particularly true with a verb meaning "to have to," which can often be paired with other actions.
Present Infinitive ( Infinitif Présent ) devoir
Past Infinitive ( Infinitif Passé ) avoir dû
Devoir Conjugated in the Indicative Mood
The indicative mood is the most common form of French verb conjugations. It states the verb as a fact and these should be your priority when studying. Practice them in context and concentrate on the présent, imparfait , and passé composé , which are the most useful tenses. Once you've mastered those, move on to the rest.
It's also strongly recommended to train with an audio source. There are many liaisons, elisions, and modern glidings used with French verbs and the written form may fool you into using a wrong pronunciation.
Devoir Conjugated in the Conditional Mood
In French, the conditional mood implies that there are no guarantees that the verb will actually happen. This is because the action of "having to" do something is dependent on certain conditions.
Cond. Present ( Cond. Présent ) -> Cond. Past ( Cond. Passé )
- je devrais - > j'aurais dû
- tu devrais -> tu aurais dû
- il devrait -> il aurait dû
- nous devrions -> nous aurions dû
- vous devriez -> vous auriez dû
- ils devraient -> ils auraient dû
Devoir Conjugated in the Subjunctive Mood
In the French subjunctive mood , the action of the verb is uncertain or in some way questionable. It's another common verb mood that has a few different forms.
Devoir in the Participle Mood
You will find the various participle moods rather helpful as you continue your French studies. Be sure to brush up on the rules for using each form as well.
Present Participle ( Participe Présent ) devant
Past Participle ( Participe Passé ) dû / ayant dû
Perfect Participle ( Participe P.C. ) Ayant dû
There's No Imperative Mood for Devoir
This is one of the few French verbs that have no imperative mood. You cannot conjugate devoir in the imperative verb form because it simply makes no sense to order someone, "Must!"
Devoir Can Be Confusing
Beyond those were previously discussed, there are a few more tricky situations surrounding devoir . For instance, you'll want to watch out for the masculine noun le devoir, which means "the duty" and les devoirs, which means "homework." These two can be the most confusing.
Devoir causes other problems in translation because it can mean should, must, ought to, have to, or supposed to. How do you know which to use when translating the word? The distinction between necessity and probability is not always clear:
- Je dois faire la lessive. > I should/must/have to do the laundry.
- Il doit arriver demain. > He is supposed to / should / has to arrive tomorrow.
To specify "must" rather than "should," add a word like absolument (absolutely) or vraiment (really):
- Je dois absolument partir. > I really have to go.
- Nous devons vraiment te parler. > We must speak to you.
To specify "should" rather than "must," use the conditional mood:
- Tu devrais partir. > You should leave.
- Ils devraient lui parler. > They should talk to him.
To say that something "should have" happened, use the conditional perfect of devoir plus the infinitive of the other verb:
- Tu aurais dû manger. > You should have eaten.
- J'aurais dû étudier. > I should have studied.

Devoir meanings
In French, devoir can be used either on its own with a direct object, or followed by another verb in its infinitive form. The meaning changes between these two uses, so we’ll look at each one in turn.
Devoir + infinitive
The verb devoir is usually used to express obligation in French. The most straightforward devoir meaning is must , while it’s often translated as to have to or to need to . It’s also frequently used in the conditional tenses as an equivalent for should in French.
For this meaning, we first conjugate devoir and then follow it with another verb in infinitive form to state what must or has to be done. We’ll see this construction in each of our examples below.
For other comparable words and expressions to devoir, we recommend this LingoCulture post on expressing obligation in French . For now though, let’s just see a few examples to demonstrate these devoir meanings:
- Ils doivent appeler leur mère dès qu’ils arrivent. – They must call their mother as soon as they arrive.
- Nous devons partir pour l’aéroport avant 05:00. – We have to leave for the airport before 5am.
- Si vous voulez arriver rapidement, vous devez prendre le métro. – If you want to arrive quickly, you need to take the subway.
- Je veux aller en boîte ce soir, mais je devrais étudier. – I want to go to the night club tonight, but I should study.
This French verb devoir in Spanish is deber . Check out our BaseLang post on deber conjugations and meanings , including other ways to express obligation in Spanish.
Devoir + direct object
The other way we use devoir in French is as a transitive verb, meaning that it always takes a direct object. In this use, devoir means to owe . As in English, the direct object is what is owed, while the indirect object indicates to whom it’s owed.
- Je te dois toujours une bière depuis la dernière fois ! – I still owe you a beer from last time!
- Au bout de 25 ans de remboursements, mes parents ne doivent plus rien sur leur maison. – After 25 years of payments, my parents don’t owe anything more on their house.
Devoir as a noun
While the focus of this post is indeed on our devoir verb conjugations, we should also note that le devoir is also a masculine noun .
French learners probably recognize one particular translation of devoir , meaning a homework assignment . This noun is often expressed in plural.
- Je veux aller en boîte ce soir, mais je dois faire mes devoirs . – I want to go to the night club tonight, but I have to do my homework .
The other common meaning of un devoir in French is a duty or an obligation .
- Votre sécurité est notre plus grand devoir . – Your safety is our biggest duty .
Devoir conjugation tables
Now that we’ve gone over the common meanings of devoir in French, it’s time to see its conjugation in all the French tenses. Since devoir is an irregular verb, it doesn’t follow the standard conjugations of other French -ir verbs.
For a more in-depth discussion of conjugation in French, and of the different French verb tenses in general, we recommend this detailed guide to French verb conjugation .
Now let’s see the devoir conjugation table for each tense. We’ll start off with the indicative mood, broken down into present , past , and future . Then we’ll move on to conditional , subjunctive , and imperative . We’ll end with the other verb forms like the participles. Feel free to scroll down to whichever one you need. On y va!
Devoir conjugation: Present indicative tense
This is the most common tense. Be sure to learn each of these conjugations.
Devoir conjugations: Indicative past tenses
Here are the devoir conjugation tables for the indicative past tenses. You should definitely learn the imparfait and the passé composé since they’re so common, while the plus-que-parfait is also useful enough in spoken French. We also include the devoir passé simple and passé antérieur conjugations for completeness, even though they’re rarely used outside of literature.
Passé composé
As we’ll see in the passé composé and all the other compound tenses, the past participle of devoir is dû .
Plus-que-parfait
Passé simple, passé antérieur, devoir conjugations: indicative future tenses.
Here we’ll cover devoir conjugation for the two French indicative verb tenses for speaking about the future: the futur simple and the futur antérieur .
Futur simple
Futur antérieur, devoir conjugation: conditional tenses.
We have two conditional verb tenses in French: the conditionnel présent and the conditionnel passé. The present conditional tense can be used to be polite, so for devoir it translates as should . Likewise, the past conditional devoir conjugation translates as should have .
Conditionnel présent
Conditionnel passé, devoir conjugations in the subjunctive.
We have four subjunctive tenses in French. The subjonctif présent and the subjonctif passé are the most common and used in everyday French. The subjonctif imparfait and the subjonctif plus-que-parfait appear only in classic French literature.
Devoir in subjonctif présent can have a few English translations. Depending on the context, it may be should , need to , or have to . In the subjonctif passé , devoir may be should have , had needed to , or had had to .
Subjonctif présent
Subjonctif passé, subjonctif imparfait, subjonctif plus-que-parfait, devoir conjugation in the imperative.
The imperative is used to give commands or requests to others. The subject is dropped from the sentence when using these tenses.
In the case of devoir , we can’t really use it in the imperative because it’s unrealistic to order someone to must . Nonetheless, devoir imperative conjugations exist, so we include them here for completeness.
Impératif passé
Devoir participles.
We already saw the past participle of devoir in all of our compound conjugations, whose possible translations include needed , needed to , or had to . Devoir’s participe composé can therefore be having needed , having needed to , or having had to . The present participle of devoir translates best as needing to or having to .
Past infinitive of devoir
Our final devoir verb form is the infinitif passé , which translates as have needed , have needed to , or have had to .
Conclusion: Devoir conjugation
We’ve reached the end of our post on the French verb devoir , so let’s just do a quick recap on what we saw.
We started off looking at the meaning of devoir , with the verb’s main English translations including to need to , to have to , must , and even should . We also saw devoir as a noun , with its main translation as homework in French.
Then we got into the devoir conjugation tables . As an irregular verb, it’s important to have an easy reference for any of the tenses. We made it easy to find whichever one you’re looking for, grouped by mood. We ended with the other verb forms of devoir , namely the participles.
Avec ça, nous devons finir. À la prochaine! – And with that, we need to finish. Until next time!

Expressing Obligation in French : Devoir
Everyone is dreaming of a life without obligations. But, life is made of bills, chores, 9-5 jobs, dental appointments, feeding your dog and the list just goes on.
Learning how to talk about your obligations in French will allow you to share this giant section of your life.
Let’s discover all about the French verb devoir , which can translate as have to and must.
Is devoir a Modal Verb?
Even though the English verb “must” is an equivalent of the French verb devoir , they do not behave the same way. The first thing to note is that the English verb “must” is considered a modal verb, just like “may”, “should”, “might”, and others, whilst the French verb isn’t.
What are modal verbs?
Modal verbs are similar to auxiliary verbs (helper verbs), which means they’re used together with the main verb of the sentence. That’s why they are also known as “modal auxiliary”.
In English, modal verbs have no conjugation – the form stays the same for all grammatical persons—expressing the mood of the verb that follows it. It means that modal verbs in English (nine out of ten) are followed directly by the second verb and use no “to” in-between.
French language, on the other hand, has no modal verbs, or at least do not call them modal verbs, implying that some English modal verbs can not be translated straightforward in French. For example, shall and will plus a verb are both equivalents to the French future tense.
We shall win !
Nous vaincrons !
Sometimes, French will even use adverbs to better express English modal verbs. It’s the case with modal verbs may and might, which mean “it’s possible”. Take a look at this example, where the adverb peut-être can be used as a replacement for the verb pouvoir.
I may / might leave early.
Je pars tôt, peut-être. or Je peux partir tôt.
Ways to Express Obligation in French

You need to choose a side.
To distinguish between the levels of obligations in French, we can use the expression, avoir besoin de (to have to) to express a light obligation, and il faut (to be necessary), to express a stronger obligation.
Expression avoir besoin , to express a light obligation.
J ‘ai besoin de vous interrompre pendant quelques instants.
I need to interrupt you for a minute.
Expression il faut, to express a strong obligation.
Mais avant il faut faire un arrangement.
But first we have to come to an arrangement.

When used in this sense, devoir is followed by a noun.

He owes ten dollars.
To be bound to
Tu dois découvrir la vérité.
You’re bound to discover the truth.
To specify that something “must” happen, strengthen devoir with something like absolument , à tout prix , impérativement , or vraiment .
Tu dois vraiment finir ce projet.
You really must finish this project.
Je dois partir à 14h à tout prix.
I have to leave at 2pm no matter what.
To express how something “should” happen, we can soften devoir by using the conditional mode.

You should finish this project.
Tu devrais partir à 15h.
You should leave at 3 pm.

Hi all We had a problem in my class last week concerning the noun devoir. My dictionary (Collins) suggested for "homework" it was always singular. My french teacher suggested that "devoir" was an exercise and "devoirs" was homework. Who is right?
Homework is always plural.
