Adults often work best in the company of others, and the same can be said of kids, so why not sit with your child while they’re studying and get on with some of your own work or life admin?

Whether you’re returning emails, doing your online banking or organising the next primary school PTA fundraiser, creating a shared workspace and modelling focused work is a great way to spend quality time together while they complete their homework. Win-win!

Rewards and incentives are great when it comes to getting your children to follow your household rules and routines, and homework is no different. 6. Set up a homework play date

Holding a homework playdate where your child can invite one of their best school buddies over to do homework together can be a great way for them to learn and make sure the work gets done, especially slightly older primary children.

Plus, it’s likely that their parents will be delighted!

Younger children may need a bit more support and guidance but can still gain a lot from the experience of learning together with a friend – think of this as a mini-educational play date for them – with a special tea afterwards of course!

Quick win: Let your child and their friend play for a while, and then get them to work through their homework with the incentive of a yummy ‘tea party’ when they’ve completed all of their homework.

9. Let them play teacher

Make another fun homework game by creating your own mini-classroom and letting your child step into the role of teacher.

Have your child explain a concept to you as a teacher, as you, or their sibling, plays the role of the student. This game works particularly well with subjects that require theory, like Science for example, as it will improve their understanding of the concept and build logic and reasoning skills.

Some children may have difficulty working for prolonged periods of time without a break, so using a timer can be great for getting them to complete homework without the whining. For example, if your child is given 20 maths problems for homework, you can say “Complete the first 10 questions then we’ll take a 5-minute break, then complete the next 10 questions”.

Many children will need a mental break and will work more effectively when given the opportunity to take one. At the end of the task, they get to pick an activity of their choice. If your child gets easily distracted, a timer game can work well to keep them focused on the task in hand.

11. Create a special homework space

A special study space can make homework more fun and help motivate your child to get it done! Choose a space in your house that’s least likely to distract your child, and create a simple, organised, and kid-friendly homework HQ.

Homework can often feel stressful and boring. Unfortunately, if you're in school it's a part of life. If you consistently dread doing homework, you should look into ways you can enjoy the task. This way, school will be more pleasant for you overall. You can start with subjects that interest you, give yourself breaks and rewards, and work on changing your mentality regarding homework in general.

Planning Homework Time

Step 1 Choose a time of day when you feel energetic.

  • It may help to take a few days to measure your natural ebb and flow of energy. You may find that, during late afternoon, you feel a sudden slump in energy. However, as it gets closer to the evening hours, you may suddenly have a boost in energy. Therefore, instead of doing homework after school, try to do your homework after dinner each night.
  • You'll feel happier and more productive if you're studying during a time when you're experiencing a peak in energy. Homework will seem to go by faster, and you will not struggle as much to concentrate.

Step 2 Plan to start with subjects that interest you.

  • You can alternate between subjects you like and dislike. This can help give you motivation while moving through subjects that bore you. For example, if you love science but hate history, do half of your science assignment, then half of your history one, and then return to science.

Step 3 Find a good place to work.

  • Even small changes can make homework time more enjoyable. You could, for example, move your desk near the window. Natural light may lead to a more calming environment, and you can occasionally look up and enjoy the view.
  • You can also think about studying outside the house. If you love hanging out at a local coffee shop, try doing your homework there. You can get a latte or a coffee as a treat as you move through your homework.

Step 4 Make a homework playlist.

  • You may have to experiment with different songs. Some songs may be distracting. If a song makes you want to get up and dance, for example, it may not the best to include on a homework playlist, as you will lose focus in your homework. Some people find that classical music is very helpful when studying.
  • Not everyone can concentrate with music in the background. If you find music is making it harder for you to study, you may want to nix the playlists and focus on other means to enjoy your homework.

Giving Yourself Motivation

Step 1 Take breaks.

  • Good examples of what to do during your breaks are taking walks, meditating, stretching, or getting yourself a snack.
  • Many people find it's most effective to work in short spurts. You may want to plan to work in half hour to 45-minute intervals, for example, and then take a 5 to 10-minute break.
  • Be careful with breaks, however. Make sure you time your breaks wisely so they don't end up running over. If you allow yourself a 10 minute Facebook break every 40 minutes, set a timer on your phone to make sure you do not end up procrastinating on social media for hours.

Step 2 Give yourself rewards.

  • Be careful who you include in a study group. While you want to be able to enjoy yourself, you also want to get work done. Choose people who are serious enough students that you won't end up distracted all night.
  • Together as a group, you can brainstorm ways to have fun. For example, you can agree you'll do homework in silence for 40 minutes and then take a 15 minute break to chat.

Step 4 Time yourself.

  • Be careful, however, not to do sloppy work. If you're trying to break a record, you may speed through your homework. Strive to work efficiently rather than quickly.
  • Talk to your parents to see how the topic your studying may affect them in the present day.
  • Be careful not to get distracted in this extra research or you’ll lose focus on your homework. Set a timer for yourself so you don’t spend too much time doing it.

Changing Your Mindset About Learning

Step 1 Cultivate a sense of achievement.

  • It can help to make a to-do list. Your studies are items you can check off the list, allowing you to relax and unwind. You'll also feel a sense of achievement with each item you check off your list.
  • Stop and think about what you've accomplished when you finish your homework. Try to feel proud of yourself for getting your work done. You'll learn to work towards this sense of accomplishment in the future.

Step 2 Avoid procrastination.

  • If you dislike your writing assignments, pause and consider how good writing skills can help you get a job. If you dislike your computer class, try to keep in mind that basic computer skills will be important in college and the working world.

I will mention homework alternatives for primary school and high school. Some of these ideas can be changed a little bit, so they are the perfect fit for the right audience.

How to Do Homework: Figure Out Your Struggles 

Sometimes it feels like everything is standing between you and getting your homework done. But the truth is, most people only have one or two major roadblocks that are keeping them from getting their homework done well and on time. 

The best way to figure out how to get motivated to do homework starts with pinpointing the issues that are affecting your ability to get your assignments done. That’s why we’ve developed a short quiz to help you identify the areas where you’re struggling. 

Take the quiz below and record your answers on your phone or on a scrap piece of paper. Keep in mind there are no wrong answers! 

1. You’ve just been assigned an essay in your English class that’s due at the end of the week. What’s the first thing you do?

A. Keep it in mind, even though you won’t start it until the day before it’s due  B. Open up your planner. You’ve got to figure out when you’ll write your paper since you have band practice, a speech tournament, and your little sister’s dance recital this week, too.  C. Groan out loud. Another essay? You could barely get yourself to write the last one!  D. Start thinking about your essay topic, which makes you think about your art project that’s due the same day, which reminds you that your favorite artist might have just posted to Instagram...so you better check your feed right now. 

2. Your mom asked you to pick up your room before she gets home from work. You’ve just gotten home from school. You decide you’ll tackle your chores: 

A. Five minutes before your mom walks through the front door. As long as it gets done, who cares when you start?  B. As soon as you get home from your shift at the local grocery store.  C. After you give yourself a 15-minute pep talk about how you need to get to work.  D. You won’t get it done. Between texts from your friends, trying to watch your favorite Netflix show, and playing with your dog, you just lost track of time! 

3. You’ve signed up to wash dogs at the Humane Society to help earn money for your senior class trip. You: 

A. Show up ten minutes late. You put off leaving your house until the last minute, then got stuck in unexpected traffic on the way to the shelter.  B. Have to call and cancel at the last minute. You forgot you’d already agreed to babysit your cousin and bake cupcakes for tomorrow’s bake sale.  C. Actually arrive fifteen minutes early with extra brushes and bandanas you picked up at the store. You’re passionate about animals, so you’re excited to help out! D. Show up on time, but only get three dogs washed. You couldn’t help it: you just kept getting distracted by how cute they were!

4. You have an hour of downtime, so you decide you’re going to watch an episode of The Great British Baking Show. You: 

A. Scroll through your social media feeds for twenty minutes before hitting play, which means you’re not able to finish the whole episode. Ugh! You really wanted to see who was sent home!  B. Watch fifteen minutes until you remember you’re supposed to pick up your sister from band practice before heading to your part-time job. No GBBO for you!  C. You finish one episode, then decide to watch another even though you’ve got SAT studying to do. It’s just more fun to watch people make scones.  D. Start the episode, but only catch bits and pieces of it because you’re reading Twitter, cleaning out your backpack, and eating a snack at the same time.

5. Your teacher asks you to stay after class because you’ve missed turning in two homework assignments in a row. When she asks you what’s wrong, you say: 

A. You planned to do your assignments during lunch, but you ran out of time. You decided it would be better to turn in nothing at all than submit unfinished work.  B. You really wanted to get the assignments done, but between your extracurriculars, family commitments, and your part-time job, your homework fell through the cracks.  C. You have a hard time psyching yourself to tackle the assignments. You just can’t seem to find the motivation to work on them once you get home.  D. You tried to do them, but you had a hard time focusing. By the time you realized you hadn’t gotten anything done, it was already time to turn them in. 

Like we said earlier, there are no right or wrong answers to this quiz (though your results will be better if you answered as honestly as possible). Here’s how your answers break down: 

  • If your answers were mostly As, then your biggest struggle with doing homework is procrastination. 
  • If your answers were mostly Bs, then your biggest struggle with doing homework is time management. 
  • If your answers were mostly Cs, then your biggest struggle with doing homework is motivation. 
  • If your answers were mostly Ds, then your biggest struggle with doing homework is getting distracted.

How to Do Homework When You’re a Procrastinator  

Merriam Webster defines “procrastinate” as “to put off intentionally and habitually.” In other words, procrastination is when you choose to do something at the last minute on a regular basis. If you’ve ever found yourself pulling an all-nighter, trying to finish an assignment between periods, or sprinting to turn in a paper minutes before a deadline, you’ve experienced the effects of procrastination. 

If you’re a chronic procrastinator, you’re in good company. In fact, one study found that 70% to 95% of undergraduate students procrastinate when it comes to doing their homework. Unfortunately, procrastination can negatively impact your grades. Researchers have found that procrastination can lower your grade on an assignment by as much as five points ...which might not sound serious until you realize that can mean the difference between a B- and a C+. 

Procrastination can also negatively affect your health by increasing your stress levels , which can lead to other health conditions like insomnia, a weakened immune system, and even heart conditions. Getting a handle on procrastination can not only improve your grades, it can make you feel better, too! 

The big thing to understand about procrastination is that it’s not the result of laziness. Laziness is defined as being “disinclined to activity or exertion.” In other words, being lazy is all about doing nothing. Instead, procrastinators tend to postpone tasks they don’t want to do in favor of tasks that they perceive as either more important or more fun. 3 Tips f or Conquering Procrastination 

Because putting off doing homework is a common problem, there are lots of good tactics for addressing procrastination. Keep reading for our three expert tips that will get your homework habits back on track in no time. 

#1: Create a Reward System

Like we mentioned earlier, procrastination happens when you prioritize other activities over getting your homework done. Many times, this happens because homework...well, just isn’t enjoyable. But you can add some fun back into the process by rewarding yourself for getting your work done. 

Here’s what we mean: let’s say you decide that every time you get your homework done before the day it’s due, you’ll give yourself a point. For every five points you earn, you’ll treat yourself to your favorite dessert: a chocolate cupcake! Now you have an extra (delicious!) incentive to motivate you to leave procrastination in the dust. 

If you’re not into cupcakes, don’t worry. Your reward can be anything that motivates you . Maybe it’s hanging out with your best friend or an extra ten minutes of video game time. As long as you’re choosing something that makes homework worth doing, you’ll be successful. 

#2: Have a Homework Accountability Partner 

If you’re having trouble getting yourself to start your homework ahead of time, it may be a good idea to call in reinforcements . Find a friend or classmate you can trust and explain to them that you’re trying to change your homework habits. Ask them if they’d be willing to text you to make sure you’re doing your homework and check in with you once a week to see if you’re meeting your anti-procrastination goals. 

Sharing your goals can make them feel more real, and an accountability partner can help hold you responsible for your decisions. For example, let’s say you’re tempted to put off your science lab write-up until the morning before it’s due. But you know that your accountability partner is going to text you about it tomorrow...and you don’t want to fess up that you haven’t started your assignment. A homework accountability partner can give you the extra support and incentive you need to keep your homework habits on track. 

#3: Create Your Own Due Dates 

If you’re a life-long procrastinator, you might find that changing the habit is harder than you expected. In that case, you might try using procrastination to your advantage! If you just can’t seem to stop doing your work at the last minute, try setting your own due dates for assignments that range from a day to a week before the assignment is actually due. 

Here’s what we mean. Let’s say you have a math worksheet that’s been assigned on Tuesday and is due on Friday. In your planner, you can write down the due date as Thursday instead. You may still put off your homework assignment until the last minute...but in this case, the “last minute” is a day before the assignment’s real due date . This little hack can trick your procrastination-addicted brain into planning ahead!

How to Do Homework When You’re too Busy

If you’re aiming to go to a top-tier college , you’re going to have a full plate. Because college admissions is getting more competitive, it’s important that you’re maintaining your grades , studying hard for your standardized tests , and participating in extracurriculars so your application stands out. A packed schedule can get even more hectic once you add family obligations or a part-time job to the mix. 

If you feel like you’re being pulled in a million directions at once, you’re not alone. Recent research has found that stress—and more severe stress-related conditions like anxiety and depression— are a major problem for high school students . In fact, one study from the American Psychological Association found that during the school year, students’ stress levels are higher than those of the adults around them. 

For students, homework is a major contributor to their overall stress levels . Many high schoolers have multiple hours of homework every night , and figuring out how to fit it into an already-packed schedule can seem impossible. 

3 Tips for Fitting Homework Into Your Busy Schedule

While it might feel like you have literally no time left in your schedule, there are still ways to make sure you’re able to get your homework done and meet your other commitments. Here are our expert homework tips for even the busiest of students. 

#1: Make a Prioritized To-Do List 

You probably already have a to-do list to keep yourself on track. The next step is to prioritize the items on your to-do list so you can see what items need your attention right away. 

Here’s how it works: at the beginning of each day, sit down and make a list of all the items you need to get done before you go to bed. This includes your homework, but it should also take into account any practices, chores, events, or job shifts you may have. Once you get everything listed out, it’s time to prioritize them using the labels A, B, and C. Here’s what those labels mean:

  • A Tasks : tasks that have to get done—like showing up at work or turning in an assignment—get an A. 
  • B Tasks : these are tasks that you would like to get done by the end of the day but aren’t as time sensitive. For example, studying for a test you have next week could be a B-level task. It’s still important, but it doesn’t have to be done right away.
  • C Tasks: these are tasks that aren’t very important and/or have no real consequences if you don’t get them done immediately. For instance, if you’re hoping to clean out your closet but it’s not an assigned chore from your parents, you could label that to-do item with a C.

Prioritizing your to-do list helps you visualize which items need your immediate attention, and which items you can leave for later. A prioritized to-do list ensures that you’re spending your time efficiently and effectively, which helps you make room in your schedule for homework. So even though you might really want to start making decorations for Homecoming (a B task), you’ll know that finishing your reading log (an A task) is more important. 

#2: Use a Planner With Time Labels

Your planner is probably packed with notes, events, and assignments already. (And if you’re not using a planner, it’s time to start!) But planners can do more for you than just remind you when an assignment is due. If you’re using a planner with time labels, it can help you visualize how you need to spend your day.

A planner with time labels breaks your day down into chunks, and you assign tasks to each chunk of time. For example, you can make a note of your class schedule with assignments, block out time to study, and make sure you know when you need to be at practice. Once you know which tasks take priority, you can add them to any empty spaces in your day. 

Planning out how you spend your time not only helps you use it wisely, it can help you feel less overwhelmed, too . We’re big fans of planners that include a task list ( like this one ) or have room for notes ( like this one ). 

#3: Set Reminders on Your Phone 

If you need a little extra nudge to make sure you’re getting your homework done on time, it’s a good idea to set some reminders on your phone. You don’t need a fancy app, either. You can use your alarm app to have it go off at specific times throughout the day to remind you to do your homework. This works especially well if you have a set homework time scheduled. So if you’ve decided you’re doing homework at 6:00 pm, you can set an alarm to remind you to bust out your books and get to work. 

If you use your phone as your planner, you may have the option to add alerts, emails, or notifications to scheduled events . Many calendar apps, including the one that comes with your phone, have built-in reminders that you can customize to meet your needs. So if you block off time to do your homework from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, you can set a reminder that will pop up on your phone when it’s time to get started.

How to Do Homework When You’re Unmotivated 

At first glance, it may seem like procrastination and being unmotivated are the same thing. After all, both of these issues usually result in you putting off your homework until the very last minute. 

But there’s one key difference: many procrastinators are working, they’re just prioritizing work differently. They know they’re going to start their homework...they’re just going to do it later. 

Conversely, people who are unmotivated to do homework just can’t find the willpower to tackle their assignments. Procrastinators know they’ll at least attempt the homework at the last minute, whereas people who are unmotivated struggle with convincing themselves to do it at a ll. For procrastinators, the stress comes from the inevitable time crunch. For unmotivated people, the stress comes from trying to convince themselves to do something they don’t want to do in the first place. 

Here are some common reasons students are unmotivated in doing homework : 

  • Assignments are too easy, too hard, or seemingly pointless 
  • Students aren’t interested in (or passionate about) the subject matter
  • Students are intimidated by the work and/or feels like they don’t understand the assignment 
  • Homework isn’t fun, and students would rather spend their time on things that they enjoy 

To sum it up: people who lack motivation to do their homework are more likely to not do it at all, or to spend more time worrying about doing their homework than...well, actually doing it.

3 Tips for How to Get Motivated to Do Homework

The key to getting homework done when you’re unmotivated is to figure out what does motivate you, then apply those things to homework. It sounds tricky...but it’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it! Here are our three expert tips for motivating yourself to do your homework. 

#1: Use Incremental Incentives

When you’re not motivated, it’s important to give yourself small rewards to stay focused on finishing the task at hand. The trick is to keep the incentives small and to reward yourself often. For example, maybe you’re reading a good book in your free time. For every ten minutes you spend on your homework, you get to read five pages of your book. Like we mentioned earlier, make sure you’re choosing a reward that works for you! 

So why does this technique work? Using small rewards more often allows you to experience small wins for getting your work done. Every time you make it to one of your tiny reward points, you get to celebrate your success, which gives your brain a boost of dopamine . Dopamine helps you stay motivated and also creates a feeling of satisfaction when you complete your homework !  

#2: Form a Homework Group 

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself, it’s okay to turn to others for support. Creating a homework group can help with this. Bring together a group of your friends or classmates, and pick one time a week where you meet and work on homework together. You don’t have to be in the same class, or even taking the same subjects— the goal is to encourage one another to start (and finish!) your assignments. 

Another added benefit of a homework group is that you can help one another if you’re struggling to understand the material covered in your classes. This is especially helpful if your lack of motivation comes from being intimidated by your assignments. Asking your friends for help may feel less scary than talking to your teacher...and once you get a handle on the material, your homework may become less frightening, too. 

#3: Change Up Your Environment 

If you find that you’re totally unmotivated, it may help if you find a new place to do your homework. For example, if you’ve been struggling to get your homework done at home, try spending an extra hour in the library after school instead. The change of scenery can limit your distractions and give you the energy you need to get your work done. 

If you’re stuck doing homework at home, you can still use this tip. For instance, maybe you’ve always done your homework sitting on your bed. Try relocating somewhere else, like your kitchen table, for a few weeks. You may find that setting up a new “homework spot” in your house gives you a motivational lift and helps you get your work done.

How to Do Homework When You’re Easily Distracted

We live in an always-on world, and there are tons of things clamoring for our attention. From friends and family to pop culture and social media, it seems like there’s always something (or someone!) distracting us from the things we need to do.

The 24/7 world we live in has affected our ability to focus on tasks for prolonged periods of time. Research has shown that over the past decade, an average person’s attention span has gone from 12 seconds to eight seconds . And when we do lose focus, i t takes people a long time to get back on task . One study found that it can take as long as 23 minutes to get back to work once we’ve been distracte d. No wonder it can take hours to get your homework done! 

3 Tips to Improve Your Focus

If you have a hard time focusing when you’re doing your homework, it’s a good idea to try and eliminate as many distractions as possible. Here are three expert tips for blocking out the noise so you can focus on getting your homework done. 

#1: Create a Distraction-Free Environment

Pick a place where you’ll do your homework every day, and make it as distraction-free as possible. Try to find a location where there won’t be tons of noise, and limit your access to screens while you’re doing your homework. Put together a focus-oriented playlist (or choose one on your favorite streaming service), and put your headphones on while you work. 

You may find that other people, like your friends and family, are your biggest distraction. If that’s the case, try setting up some homework boundaries. Let them know when you’ll be working on homework every day, and ask them if they’ll help you keep a quiet environment. They’ll be happy to lend a hand! 

#2: Limit Your Access to Technology 

We know, we know...this tip isn’t fun, but it does work. For homework that doesn’t require a computer, like handouts or worksheets, it’s best to put all your technology away . Turn off your television, put your phone and laptop in your backpack, and silence notifications on any wearable tech you may be sporting. If you listen to music while you work, that’s fine...but make sure you have a playlist set up so you’re not shuffling through songs once you get started on your homework. 

If your homework requires your laptop or tablet, it can be harder to limit your access to distractions. But it’s not impossible! T here are apps you can download that will block certain websites while you’re working so that you’re not tempted to scroll through Twitter or check your Facebook feed. Silence notifications and text messages on your computer, and don’t open your email account unless you absolutely have to. And if you don’t need access to the internet to complete your assignments, turn off your WiFi. Cutting out the online chatter is a great way to make sure you’re getting your homework done. 

#3: Set a Timer (the Pomodoro Technique)

Have you ever heard of the Pomodoro technique ? It’s a productivity hack that uses a timer to help you focus!

Here’s how it works: first, set a timer for 25 minutes. This is going to be your work time. During this 25 minutes, all you can do is work on whatever homework assignment you have in front of you. No email, no text messaging, no phone calls—just homework. When that timer goes off, you get to take a 5 minute break. Every time you go through one of these cycles, it’s called a “pomodoro.” For every four pomodoros you complete, you can take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.

The pomodoro technique works through a combination of boundary setting and rewards. First, it gives you a finite amount of time to focus, so you know that you only have to work really hard for 25 minutes. Once you’ve done that, you’re rewarded with a short break where you can do whatever you want. Additionally, tracking how many pomodoros you complete can help you see how long you’re really working on your homework. (Once you start using our focus tips, you may find it doesn’t take as long as you thought!)


Two Bonus Tips for How to Do Homework Fast

Even if you’re doing everything right, there will be times when you just need to get your homework done as fast as possible. (Why do teachers always have projects due in the same week? The world may never know.)

The problem with speeding through homework is that it’s easy to make mistakes. While turning in an assignment is always better than not submitting anything at all, you want to make sure that you’re not compromising quality for speed. Simply put, the goal is to get your homework done quickly and still make a good grade on the assignment! 

Here are our two bonus tips for getting a decent grade on your homework assignments , even when you’re in a time crunch. 

#1: Do the Easy Parts First 

This is especially true if you’re working on a handout with multiple questions. Before you start working on the assignment, read through all the questions and problems. As you do, make a mark beside the questions you think are “easy” to answer . 

Once you’ve finished going through the whole assignment, you can answer these questions first. Getting the easy questions out of the way as quickly as possible lets you spend more time on the trickier portions of your homework, which will maximize your assignment grade. 

(Quick note: this is also a good strategy to use on timed assignments and tests, like the SAT and the ACT !) 

#2: Pay Attention in Class 

Homework gets a lot easier when you’re actively learning the material. Teachers aren’t giving you homework because they’re mean or trying to ruin your weekend... it’s because they want you to really understand the course material. Homework is designed to reinforce what you’re already learning in class so you’ll be ready to tackle harder concepts later.

When you pay attention in class, ask questions, and take good notes, you’re absorbing the information you’ll need to succeed on your homework assignments. (You’re stuck in class anyway, so you might as well make the most of it!) Not only will paying attention in class make your homework less confusing, it will also help it go much faster, too.

When you thought of what college would be like, you probably didn't think about it being boring. Despite all the activity that takes place on a college campus, there can be times when things do get a wee bit slow. So what can you do to help pass the time?

1. Walk to a New Part of Campus

If you need something to do, one of the best ways to find something exciting is to step outside and see what's going on. Put on a pair of comfy shoes, grab your phone, and head outside to explore a part of campus you've never visited before. You just might stumble across a few friends playing rugby, a cool new part of campus where you can study, or an art exhibit that piques your interest.

2. Head to the Gym

Don't feel like working out ? Hitting the gym might be just the pick-me-up you need to get some energy, refocus your priorities, and pass some time. Plus, you'll get exercise and the health benefits to boot.

3. Join or Start a Pick-up Game

If things are a little slow on campus, chances are you aren't the only one looking for something to do. Head to the gym, see who else is hanging out, and start a pick-up game. You'll burn calories, meet some new people, get some exercise, and pass the time—while possibly earning bragging rights.

4. Read Something for Fun

It may sound crazy given how much reading you do in college anyway, but think about it: When was the last time you read a gossip magazine just for fun? Or caught up on the latest news about your favorite sports team? Head to the bookstore or a local supermarket and, for a few bucks, treat yourself to some fun, easy reading that doesn't require you to take notes .

5. Do Homework in a New Location

Consider this, would you rather work on your homework when you're bored or when there are tons of fun, exciting things going on that you don't want to miss? Finding a new study location can also help make doing your homework feel less tedious. A new environment can do wonders for your focus, outlook, and productivity.

6. Hang out in Your Residence Hall Lobby

Your residence hall common area might seem like a place that you just pass through on the way to and from your room every day. If you time it right, you can head down, enjoy the extra space, perhaps watch a game on the TV, and meet some new people or hang out with ones you already know. It can be a nice way to do something new in a place that already feels familiar.

7. Watch a Game in Person

If you're bored on campus, see if there's a game scheduled. Choose a sport you haven't seen in person before. Watching rugby, soccer, softball, lacrosse, or water polo can be a great way to spend an afternoon.

8. Watch a Game on TV or the Internet

So, things on campus are a little slow and boring. Grab some friends, head to the dining hall, pick up some snacks and drinks, and watch the game on TV or on the computer in your room. It might not be as exciting as watching the game in person, but it can be a great way to pass the time—especially if the weather outside is far from ideal.

9. Go to an Event You've Never Attended 

The chances of absolutely  nothing  happening on your campus at any given point in time are pretty slim. The problem might be, however, that the things that are going on just aren't on your radar. Challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and attend an event that you've never gone to before.

10. Go to a Cultural Event off Campus

Can't find anything to do on campus? Check out the local entertainment listings of what's happening  off  campus. A poetry slam, art fair, music festival, or some other event can be just what you need to turn a boring day into a memorable one and get familiar with your new city at the same time.

11. Go to a Museum off Campus

You're in college because you enjoy learning new things and living an intellectual life. Take that smarty-pants brain of yours and go learn something new at a museum exhibit in town. Viewing something new and exciting from a certain time period, artist, photographer, or sculptor can be a great learning experience. If you're lucky, you can even use what you learned as bonus points in an upcoming class assignment.

12. Call and Catch up With a High School Friend

Things can get so busy in college that it can be difficult to  keep in touch with your high school or hometown friends. When was the last time you had a nice, long phone call with a friend you knew before you left for college? If you have some free time and are a little bored, use the break to your advantage and catch up with an old friend.

13. Hang out in the Campus Coffee Shop

The campus coffee shop offers far more than just your favorite kind of coffee. It can be a good place to get some work done, surf the Internet, people watch, or otherwise just hang out. And if you're bored, it can be a great place to get a change of scenery without spending  too much money .

14. Grab Some Friends and Head to a Movie off Campus 

If you use your  student discount , you can catch a new movie, have some social time, get off campus, and mentally check out  from the stress of college life  for a few hours—all at a discounted price.

15. Grab Some Friends and Watch a Movie Online 

If the weather is bad but you need something to do, grab some friends and stream a movie in someone's room. Even if it's a horrible movie, you and your friends will have something to laugh about.

16. Do Something Creative 

For students lucky enough to have a creative streak, the time to relax and make something just for fun is rare. Turn a boring afternoon into one of those moments when you can let your creativity flow without having to worry about your upcoming assignment.

17. Crank up the Music and Organize Your Life

Use a free (read: boring) afternoon to do all the things you don't want to do but actually need to get done. Do your laundry, clean up your room, organize your paperwork, make sure your calendar/time management system is up to date, and generally get your to-do list done. Cranking up the music (or watching a movie) can help make the tasks go faster. The way you'll feel when everything is done will be well worth it.

Even on the most jam-packed days, you will find yourself with a few odd breaks on your hands.  Whether you’re early to a meeting, just finished a doozy of a task, or trying to ease into the day, there are always minutes-long gaps to turn your boredom into productive moments.

Highly-productive people get so much done because they make a conscious and committed effort to do the little things every day that lead to progress.

It’s almost scary how easy it is to let your email inbox get out of hand. But much like the relentless power of mother nature, if left to its own devices, your inbox can quickly grow beyond your means of control if you don’t tend to it daily.  

Simply put: start decluttering your inbox wherever you can.  

Archive the messages that have already been opened and addressed, snooze the messages that can wait for another day, and trash everything that is simply taking up space.

If you find yourself with 20 minutes of downtime, check your About This Mac tab from the apple-icon dropdown in the top left corner of your screen. Chrome, Evernote, Grammarly, and other plug-ins are also constantly updating to ensure they’re performing at peak proficiency! Are you overdue for an app refresh?

This might not sound thrilling, but you will be so glad you did it! 

Compile a binder or folder with important documents, numbers, passwords, and contacts that you always seem to forget or misplace. Keep everything together to avoid combing through your desk drawers the next time you need to re-enter that wifi pin number you set up five years ago. 

More than just your physical workspace, how can you declutter your living space? If you work from home , you might be working in the same place where you sleep, have lunch, read, and meal prep. 

Improving the overall functionality of a space becomes even more important as you reduce your square footage, but small changes to organize or improve the feel of your major living areas can have a positive ripple effect on how you feel during both your personal and professional time.  

And it doesn’t have to take long! 

Start with the dishes or quickly wipe down your surfaces, then, you can start thinking more critically about what larger functional changes you want to make. Consult the principles of feng shui to ensure your changes are intentional and proven to help you boost remote work productivity .  

This gets its own mention because it is a huge task. Beyond organizing (by color, sleeve length, season, or all three), what can you downsize? 

Creating the additional space can remind you of clothing you used to love but had since forgotten or reveal the staple items your wardrobe still needs. 

This is also a great time to pick out a few go-to outfits to eliminate daily decision fatigue and the stress of getting dressed in the morning—particularly when you’re running behind! 

But more importantly, consider donating your unwanted pieces or taking them to a consignment shop to give them new life! 

Clean out your car, update your registration, wash your makeup brushes, or re-season your cast iron—we all have that “thing” that we know will only take a few minutes, but can’t bring ourselves to do. 

And if you don’t have a personal budget already, make one! 

Even if it’s just a list of major monthly expenses or subscriptions, this can help you take any element of surprise out of your finances. It can be scary to open your banking app every day, but it will help you make smarter spending decisions and bring you peace of mind.

Whether you work from home or on-site, there’s a real value in feeling good about yourself and how those positive feelings translate into your work ethic.

Paint your nails, pop open a soda water on the patio, put on a hydrating face mask, or—hot take—just let yourself feel bored for a second. Life can move pretty fast, allow yourself the space to pause and do nothing because boredom breeds creativity! Return to your tasks from this break feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Sitting in a desk chair, walking in heeled shoes, and working over a keyboard for hours at a time can do a real number on your hips, shoulders, neck, and back—but you’ll never regret the few minutes a day you spend correcting those habits. No matter how big or small the movements feel at the moment, it’s working! 

Meditation is fabulous and the benefits are endless! As little as 10 minutes of daily meditation can help you manage stress, increase self-awareness, focus on the present, reduce negative emotions, and gain a new perspective.  

What they don’t tell you though, is that meditation is actually pretty challenging!

Streaming platforms including YouTube, Spotify, and wellness apps like Headspace are great places to start if you’re new to meditation. Try guided meditation and shop around for ones you like! There are tons of types of meditation too, so there’s definitely one for you out there.  

Your dog is going to love this one.

It sounds almost too easy, but walking for at least 30 minutes each day packs a ton of powerful mental and physical health benefits. Like Robert Frost’s famous walks in the woods, taking a daily stroll can help clear your mind, boost your mood, improve the quality of your sleep, reduce stress, and benefit your overall self-perception. Seriously, what is there to lose?

Walking is also a great way to break away from your everyday bubble. Explore a new area in your neighborhood or city, and challenge yourself by either leaving your AirPods at home or testing out a new productivity podcast or audiobook.

Start by asking:

  • How am I feeling?
  • How would I describe myself?
  • What are my goals?

Now consider how you’d like to answer those questions next week, a month from now, or even several years down the line.

Do you always seem to forget that one thing you really needed from the store every time you go?

Take the guesswork out of what you’ll buy, what you’ll do with it, and how much you’ll actually consume in a week by making a list beforehand! Write down a few balanced recipes for each daily meal and a snack that you are sure to enjoy. Then construct your grocery list around those key ingredients. 

Especially if you’re someone who spends a considerable amount of time during your lunch break just staring into your fridge, give your future self a healthy nudge by making your meal-prepped options the obvious choice.

Look for the mini-lectures that speak to your interests, passion, work, or relationships.  When you start investing time in improving parts of yourself, everyone around you feels it too! Which is kind of a beautiful thing.  Taking those first steps under the guidance of some of the best educators that TED has to offer is a no-brainer place to start. 

On the flip side of that thought, your selection also doesn’t have to be that deep! Take your mind off of whatever is weighing you down by watching one of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s many TED appearances. 🚀

There are tons of playlists, stations, and artists perfect for boosting your concentration. Whether you are a long-time lofi follower or love to listen to the Harry Potter movie’s score, take a few free minutes to compile your favorite focus music to avoid wasting time skipping songs or getting distracted.

To coffee! For lunch! A snack! 

Have a productivity planning day! Use this as an opportunity to be a tourist in your own city! You don’t have to dip into your savings for a little fun. Do a little daydreaming and give yourself something exciting to look forward to at the end of the week. 

This is a great way to shake up the day and change your surroundings. The days can easily run together when you’re simply traveling from your bed to your home office and the couch, day in and day out, but checking out a new local spot can help give you a fresh outlook on your tasks.  

And if you’re anything like me, it also gives you a reason to brush your hair. 💇🏼‍♀️

Ideas to express yourself in ways you might not have thought of before.

There are infinite ways to get creative during the day, but hear me out on this: start by getting a coloring book. Just do it. 

Your home is your oasis! Even if you’re a renter, there are tons of quick and easy DIY projects that can help you spruce up your space for little-to-no cost. 

These projects are also a great way to boost your confidence as a reminder that you are capable of doing anything you set your mind to.  Get in the habit of being proactive and creating the change you want to see around you by turning your house into the home of your dreams. 

One of my favorite quotes of the moment is “you don’t have to be good at your hobbies.” The unrealistic expectation of needing to be good at everything you do has the potential to hold you back from so many things that you might actually love but have never tried.  

Experiment with making your own cocktails to round out the workday, learn to crochet, try a new recipe, or start playing the ukulele. Doing something because it makes you happy is the only reason you need to keep on doing it. 

…But if you are good at a particular hobby, can you turn it into a passion project? 

Personal share : I recently went through my camera roll and selected about 100 of my favorite photos to print off with no intention of framing. That stack of 4×6 pictures now lives at my desk, and I pick it up almost every day.  

Most of them are of friends, places, pets, family, or just good memories that make me smile. 🥲

You can take this same sentiment and make it your own through a single framed desk photo, a picture wall, or even an album as an easy reminder of the little things that make all your hard work worth it! 

This is a common craft to do around the turn of the year but it’s never too late to start! Especially since vision boards typically portray your inspiration for the present-day version of yourself or ideas for the immediate future.  

Take a look through Pinterest, your favorite magazines, and blogs for images, words, and role models that convey the values you want to keep at the forefront of your mind on a daily basis.

Also, what a cute thing to decorate your workspace with!

Seriously, have you spoken to another human being today? Pick up the phone or take a stroll across your office to make those quick but important connections throughout your day.

If you can’t chat right away, set up another time to talk that works for you both! Scheduling can be tough but there’s always time to reconnect with someone you love.

Break up the weekday and hit “refresh” on your brain with a conversation that doesn’t have to do with your work tasks. This also goes for Zoom! If your team is remote, throw 15-min on your coworker’s calendar as a fun surprise. ☕️

Poke around some of your favorite platforms for upcoming seminars or sign up for a networking event to meet other peers in your industry. There are also plenty of forums, pages, and online groups to help you connect with new people in your professional community in the way you’re most comfortable! 

Is there someone at your company who you admire but have never met? Or maybe someone across departments with a job you’d like to learn more about—send them a message! You’ll never know until you ask. 

Gauge their interest, send an introduction, or write thank you emails to potential clients or partners. Then, create templates from those emails to save even more time on this front in the future!

It’s never a bad time to lend a hand.💜🦄

Consider how you can support local businesses. It might feel easier to resort to the top most popular retailers out of habit, but there are definitely a ton of incredible small businesses found on sites like Etsy, or even locally right in your backyard. 

Think: gifts, daily products, locally-grown food options, and cleaning supplies. There are always more options than the obvious choices!

Random acts of kindness are kind of a big deal to us. 🎗

There is so much going on in the world and it feels like the news never stops. It can be tough sometimes to get up and go to work as if everything is okay, even if we don’t truly think it is.  

If you find yourself with a bit of spare time in your workday, spend it wisely by looking for causes and people to help. Donate to a charity, volunteer your time, or even, reach out to your company! Many businesses have budgets set aside or offer donation matching for this very scenario.  

It’s always a good idea to give back. 🤝

20 Productive Things to Do When You're Bored

Is social distancing testing your boredom? You've completed your to-do list, did your homework, finished your chores, and got tired of social media. You've got seemingly endless time to kill and don't really want to browse Instagram for the next couple of hours. So, what can you do? You don't want to feel like you've just wasted away the day and do nothing productive. 

In times like these, even doing little things make a big difference. Today's fast-paced internet age makes it almost impossible to be bored, but sometimes we do need a little stimulation. 

What can you do in your extra downtime? Here are some incredible ideas you can put to the test:

  • Learn something new: There's no end to the wonderful things you can learn on the internet. A simple Google search will help you find plenty of useful how-to guides. Plus, you can also study topics for free on LinkedIn learning with your UNI CatID. Brush up on your skills and discover something that might make a difference in your life. 
  • Update your LinkedIn profile: A good LinkedIn profile is necessary for getting a good job these days. Take a good look over it and proofread your entries. You might find a few errors or other things that need to be touched up. Write down any job duties that you may have forgotten to add. 
  • Work on your resume: Likewise, a good resume and cover letter are essential for landing a job. Most online job boards like Indeed encourage you to include a cover letter. You should have a list of bullet points to include in your letter to customize it for each post. For example, if the job you're applying to requires communication skills, multi-tasking, and scheduling, you should already have three paragraphs ready to go. Run your resume and cover letter through Grammarly and Hemingway App for good measure. 
  • Apply for jobs: The best time to be looking for work is when you're already employed. Some say that you ought to turn looking for a job into a full-time job. However, research shows that the best times to apply for jobs are in the mornings, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays.  
  • Find a side gig: Freelance work can help supplement your income. Guru, Upwork, and Fiverr are all examples of websites where you can find great jobs for some extra income. Writing, graphic design, coding, and editing are all great tasks that can be done from your home computer.  
  • Meal prep: Let's say that the average restaurant meal costs about $10. If you're ordering in every work or school day, you're spending an extra $200 a month. That adds up to a lot of money quickly. Instead, try a new recipe that you can gobble on for days. Like soups, stews and casseroles. 
  • Clean your drawers: You probably have that one space where you throw all your random knick-knacks. You know, those random items you've accumulated from fairs like miscellaneous freebies and other junk you never use. It's time to donate and only keep what you really need. 
  • Backup your files: What would happen if your computer crashed or you lost your USB stick? How much trouble would you be in? Save your items to a cloud or external hard drive just in case. In a perfect world, you wouldn't ever have to worry about these things happening to you, but it never hurts to just be a little bit cautious. You'll be thanking yourself during that rare moment when your computer does crash. 
  • Clean up your files: Go through your computers or USB drive and look at how much space is being taken up. You probably have files left and right of all sorts of things. You might have your homework from two years ago or that random meme you were going to show your friend. Purge some of these items to clean up your digital space. While you're at it, delete all those extra pictures on your phone and those songs you stopped listening to on Spotify or iTunes.

Right now is a bit of a trying time for a lot of us.

Many of our cherished activities have been taken away from us and we feel like we are in jail in our own homes!

We’re so not used to having to occupy ourselves and there’s only so much Netflix one can handle!

So to help you all (and to remind myself), I have compiled a big list of things you can do when you’re bored at home!

So without further ado, here are 100 things to do when you’re bored at home!

If you’re bored and *sigh* alone, trying being more social, virtually!  

One of the most difficult things for me right now is not having my usual outlets.

I’m a fairly social person, so I’m going a bit crazy!

Even if you are less social or a bit more on the introverted side, human connection is still an important thing to maintain. And at least in this case, you can be in complete control of who you talk to!

 Try to overcome your boredom and add some social aspects into your life through:

 1.  Zoom Call – just do it! Block out some time in your calendar!

  2.  Happy hour with friends (over video chat)

 3. Write your friends a letter about how much you appreciate them

4. Challenge your friends to an online competition in some kind of video game

5. Reach out to people you haven’t talked to in a while

6. Schedule a distance walk with a friend if you’re in an area with enough space (you can get a stick that 6ft long so that you can make sure you stay apart)

Using activity to beat your boredom!

You might be used to being active with group classes, the gym, or even your job! 

When you’re stuck at home, it can be a bit harder to find the motivation to be active. But there are actually so many fun things to do at home!

Try some of these:

7. Virtual Dance class

8. Virtual yoga class – having a set class is really great because it will give you the motivation and accountability to actually do it

9. Try some fun instagram workouts (here are my favourite workout accounts)

10. Go for a walk and listen to a podcast (funny or educational)

11. Work towards a goal – (mine is to do a headstand and run for 30 mins without a break). *fun fact, setting yourself a goal,  tracking your progress will give you the motivation to start (when you don’t feel like getting off your butt) and it will fuel you to keep going – here’s a free goal planner that also comes with a habit tracker!

12. Plan an outdoor adventure! If you have some green space around you (that’s fairly unpopulated – remember social distancing), you can plan to have a little day where you can go around and do things!

Super Fun Things To do When You’re Bored

(be warned, most of my ideas involve dancing)

let’s be real, all of the options are super fun, but these didn’t really fit into a category)

13. Dance party (to great music – see next idea)

14. Make some awesome playlists for all your different moods

15. Learn a fun dance (think Napolean Dynamite dance, or the evolution of dance, dance). Here are a couple online dance classes you can try! There’s one for belly dance and ballroom dancing!

16. If you have family in your house with you – try a board game. These are my favourites!

17. Do a photo scavenger hunt! This gives you a purpose to go outside and have some fun!

18. Throw pillows in the air and try to karate kick them! Okay, I know this sounds kinda crazy, but it can be so much fun to just let loose and be super silly!

19. Make a video – you can make it to be funny, creative, whatever! That’s what I’ve been doing and I think I’ve made some gems!

20. Have a picnic in your backyard or on your porch! Even if it’s just you or maybe someone you live with!

21. Build a blanket fort! Who says they’re just for kids?

22. Play cards

23. Play a board game

24. Set up a murder mystery game with your friends (online!)

25.  Play facebook messenger games with your friends

26.  Try streaming on twitch – they give money to people who have a certain number of streams!

27. Start a tiktok account! It’s a great way to just have some fun, and who knows, maybe you’ll get some followers?

28. Get your home garden going and get yourself a plant! (you can even look into finding a plant outside and re-potting it to a plant in your home!) Anything can be a flowerpot with some imagination!

29. Make a cool DIY flower pot for your new plants! It can be as simple as painting an old yogurt container (but you can get fancier if you want!)

Having well-defined goals that you are passionate about is a great way to beat boredom!

Being bored can be a big bummer. Whether you’re stuck inside, at school or work, or waiting to catch a flight, no one likes to be bored. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place! There are plenty of fun, creative, and productive activities you can do just about anywhere to cure your boredom. Fun Things to Do When You’re Stuck Inside

  • Watch a movie . Find a movie online, or head to your local movie theater. Maybe opt for something you wouldn't normally watch, like a documentary or a mystery.
  • Bake or cook. Baking and cooking can help you pass the time while making something scrumptious. So, try making cookies, brownies, or a homemade soup.
  • Have a fashion show. Who says you need to go anywhere to glam yourself up? Pass the time by trying out different makeup techniques and putting together fun outfits from your closet. [1] X Research source
  • Hang out with your pet. If you have an animal, pamper them with a bath, clip their nails, or teach them new tricks. Spending time with them can help you feel less bored while strengthening your relationship.

  • Practice music. If you play an instrument or sing, now is a great time to practice your skills. Try learning a new piece of music or mastering your favorite song.
  • Doodle . This is a great way to keep your hands busy while staying focused at school, work, or home.
  • Write a story. Pass the time by making up fictional characters, places, and scenarios. Jot down your ideas in a notebook, or see how long of a story you can type on your computer.
  • Make up a dance. Simply turn on some music and get groovy! You can make up an entire dance number or a quick and easy move to teach all your friends.
  • Write a song. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling right now?” Then, turn those feelings into lyrics and/or a melody.
  • Make a bucket list. Write down everything you want to do or see before you die. Maybe that’s riding in a hot air balloon or visiting Mount Everest.
  • Rewrite the lyrics to a favorite song. Look up the lyrics to your favorite song. Then, try replacing all the adjectives and/or pronouns with something new. Then, show it to your friends and see their reaction.
  • Make a collage. Cut up a magazine and hang fun quotes and pictures on your wall, or print out pictures of you and your friends to arrange in a picture frame.

  • Practice a sport. Work on your soccer goals, basketball foul shots, or long jump. In other words, practice your favorite sport to sharpen your skills, have fun, and pass the time.
  • Go for a walk. Pass the time and soak in some sunshine by taking a nature walk. Take a walk around your neighborhood or head to your local park.
