Studying abroad is an enriching experience to add to an undergraduate education. This article will give you some tips on what to look for in a study abroad program.

Studying abroad not only offers a new country to learn from everyday but also unique academic opportunities. The classes you take at a university abroad will satisfy some of your major requirements, but will offer you a different learning experience than your home university. For instance, a student majoring in Public Policy could take classes related to immigration and refugees while studying abroad at the University of Lille, which is near the migrant camps of Calais. 

Educational experiences such as this are one of the main benefits of studying abroad, so be sure to look into the class offerings that each study abroad program could make available to you. 

Another major benefit of studying abroad is language and cultural immersion. Each program will offer different degrees of immersion — some programs will enroll you directly into the same classes that domestic students in your host country take, while others will allow you to take classes taught in English that are specifically designed for study abroad students. Keep these differences in mind as you choose between programs.

Your college’s study abroad office will be your most important resource for finding study abroad programs. The study abroad office is there to listen to your goals for your study abroad experience and match you with the right program. 

For example, let’s say that you are a first year student who studied Chinese in high school. You might approach the study abroad office and ask if they have any study abroad opportunities in a Chinese-speaking country. They will use their expertise and connections to international partners to find the best study abroad options for you. The office will then put you in touch with the right people in your school’s administration and universities abroad to make your study abroad dreams a reality.

Many schools offer financial aid and scholarships to students who are looking to study abroad.  Yale, for example, offers students who receive financial aid the International Summer Award — this provides funding to cover study abroad expenses. 

The financial aid policies for studying abroad will be specific to your school. The amount of funding available, the eligibility requirements, and the application process will all take on different forms at different schools. Your school’s study abroad coordinators and financial aid office will guide you through the details.

You will need to gather as much information as you can in order to make the choice that suits you best.

Picking the right institution is always personal. Every institution has a different atmosphere, and you will relish an institute with an atmosphere that suits you. If you have a specific career in mind, it will easily narrow down your options. This will facilitate you to pick between a business school or a university. Best Business Schools have triple accreditation. It’s an indication of the gold standard of the school, faculty, approach to teaching – and the career outcomes of the alumni. Speak to the people who know the institution best and will answer all your questions honestly: the students. You will gain an insight into teaching quality as it differs from institution to institution.

Hi! Welcome to the Center for Global Engagement’s virtual introduction to Education Abroad. Maybe you’ve dreamed your whole life of going abroad, or maybe this is the first time you’ve thought about it. Either way, today we’re going to provide more information to help you understand your options at UNG and make your education abroad dreams a reality!

So what is Education Abroad?

Education abroad is an educational experience for credit or professional development in a country other than your own. You could take classes that earn credit toward your UNG degree, intern for an international company, attend a conference or complete a practicum—all while having an incredible learning experience in the process.

It’s important to note, though, that an education abroad program is NOT a vacation. There’s a reason it’s called education abroad!

During your time in another country, you’ll probably get to do some traveling and see some amazing things, it’s true. But you’ll also be studying for exams, navigating a foreign grocery store and post office, and working out how many times a week you can go to that amazing restaurant down the street and stay within budget. It’s very different from going to another country just to visit and see the sights!

Who can participate in education abroad?

First, you have to be 18 years or older—no exceptions to this one, I’m afraid!

Next, for semester and year-long programs, students can only participate after completing 30 credit hours at UNG. By completing at least two semesters of college before going abroad, students are better prepared to face the additional challenges of going to class in another country.

International Internships require a minimum 48 completed hours, which allows students to gain an academic foundation in their major prior to delving into career interests.

Finally, a student must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university.

Cadets must also be in good standing with the ROTC program.

Something that we definitely want to emphasize is that ANY MAJOR can study abroad! Now more than ever there are a wide range of programs offered in subject areas from STEM to nursing to computer science. There are also programs of varying lengths. If a semester abroad won’t fit into your academic plan, maybe a short-term program of 2-8 weeks over the summer is a better fit.

UNG currently has three majors that require an education abroad experience as part of their curriculum – International Affairs, Strategic and Security Studies, and East Asian Studies.

Now that we’ve convinced you to pursue education abroad, let’s talk about some of your options!

There are several different types of education abroad programs offered at UNG ranging from Study Abroad to International Internships to Cadet Programs.

A study abroad program allows you to take classes abroad for credit toward your major.

There are several variations of study abroad programs. There are faculty-led programs, which are led by a professor from UNG who teaches the course or courses students take while abroad and is there to support them along the way.

There are direct enrollment and exchange programs, which allow you to be just like a local student at a foreign university.

Finally, there are third-party programs, which are arranged by organizations like ISEP, CIEE and ISA. These organizations provide guidance before you leave and have staff members on site to support you.

The next type of program is an International Internship. International Internships are work experiences abroad, usually for college credit. Students can make their resumes stand out by demonstrating hands-on experience in a cross-cultural work environment.

Then there are Cadet Conferences and Exchanges. Cadets have some really unique opportunities to go abroad, such as Cadet Exchanges—where a cadet can study at military academies around the world; and Cadet Conferences, which are professional development opportunities designed especially for cadets.

There’s a program to fit every student, but it’s important to consider all your options before deciding which one is right for you. Your CGE Advisor can help you with this!

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a program, and it can be tricky to know what to expect. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

It’s a good idea to think about your goals, and consider these questions:

Where do you want to go? Are you more interested in a program that allows you to see several different places, or are you looking to be immersed in a different culture and live like a local?

How long do you see yourself being abroad? Programs can be anywhere from two weeks to an entire academic year. A program between 2-8 weeks is considered a short-term program and is generally over the summer, whereas a semester or academic year abroad is considered a long-term program.

What courses do you need to take while abroad, and when would an education abroad experience best fit into the timeline for your degree? You may be able to take courses specific to your major, complete an internship that’s part of your degree program, or you could fulfil some of your core course requirements.

What’s included in the program? Are there planned excursions, or are you encouraged to plan your own weekend travel? Check to see if accommodations are included, and what types of housing and meal plans are available.

How much is the program? Will it fit your budget? Look at what’s covered by the program cost, and the cost of additional expenses such as your flight there, meals, books, a phone plan, etc.

Would you be going on the program with a group of friends, or on your own? Think about whether it’s important to you to have the support of people you know, or whether your priority is stepping outside your comfort zone and meeting new people.

Is one of your goals to learn or improve language skills? How different is the culture from your own? Perhaps you’re looking for a similar culture to better connect with the people there, or maybe you’d rather challenge yourself to adapt to a completely different way of life.

A lot to think about, which is why it’s never too early to start planning!

Why should you go abroad? This PowerPoint slide isn’t big enough to fit all the reasons!

Among the many reasons to study abroad, some of the biggest include working toward your future, gaining new skills, and developing new perspectives.

How does education abroad help you work toward your future, you may ask? You can continue working toward your degree by earning academic credit; you can boost your resume by demonstrating in one bullet point that you’re adaptable, flexible and have experience in cross-cultural environments; you can sharpen communication and language skills! Going abroad can be an excellent way to learn a language, but regardless of the language you’re speaking, interacting with people from other cultures will help you communicate more clearly and effectively! And whether you’re looking for a job or applying to graduate school, education abroad sets you apart from other college graduates.

There are also plenty of skills to gain while abroad! Cultural awareness and empathy allow you to put yourself in another person’s shoes, which is important not only in the workplace but in daily life. By taking on the challenges of navigating life in another country, you’ll be able to adapt more easily to changes that come your way, and you’ll be a better problem solver, having put these skills to the test many times while abroad! And self-confidence—this is a big one. There’s no doubt that taking on an education abroad experience makes you feel like you can handle anything else that comes your way!

Finally, education abroad helps you develop new perspectives by challenging your comfort zone. Learning how to use a metro system, ask for directions in a foreign language, shop in a grocery store where you can’t read the labels, plan a weekend trip—these are just a few examples of the ways you’ll push yourself while abroad. Overcoming these challenges helps you grow as a person, and gives you the confidence to take on the world!

Education abroad introduces you to new experiences and new people, and offers you the opportunity to explore the world in a way that can be difficult to do after college.

It will absolutely broaden your understanding of the world, but you’ll be surprised to find that at the end, you’ll understand your own country better, too.

On a more personal level, education abroad helps you to realize your best self. It will make clear who you are, but more importantly, who you want to become.

So maybe a better question is, why SHOULDN’T you go abroad?

One thing that prevents many students from considering education abroad is finances. What financial assistance is available for education abroad?

First, we recommend planning ahead. UNG has some amazing resources at your fingertips—the Student Money Management Center can help you set a budget and work toward your education abroad goals.

Some great news is that if you go on one of our approved programs, you should still be able to use your financial aid, such as the Pell grant or Hope/Zell Miller scholarships. Your Financial Aid Advisor will help you determine exactly how your financial aid will work for your education abroad program.

In addition, the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships, or NCS, at UNG is a phenomenal resource. NCS has a team of fellowship advisors to work with UNG students to find national scholarships and support them through the application process. In fact, UNG is ranked nationally as a top producer for many study abroad scholarships, such as Gilman.

There are also a lot of creative ways to raise money. Students in the past have created a gofundme, or been helped out by their community. You could hold a yard sale or a bake sale, or maybe even utilize social media!

Bottom line: If you have your heart set on education abroad, there’s usually a way to make it happen! Just be sure to take advantage of all your resources.

So we’ve got you thinking about going abroad (or maybe you’ve been set on it from the beginning!): Where do you start?

1. Study abroad is the optimal way to learn a language. There is no better and more effective way to learn a language than to be immersed in a culture that speaks the language you are learning. You're surrounded by the language on a daily basis and are seeing and hearing it in the proper cultural context. Language learning happens most quickly under these circumstances. 2. Study abroad provides the opportunity to travel. Weekends and academic breaks allow you to venture out and explore your surroundings - both your immediate and more distant surroundings. 3. Study abroad allows you get to know another culture first-hand. Cultural differences are more than just differences in language, food, appearances, and personal habits. A person's culture reflects very deep perceptions, beliefs, and values that influence his or her way of life and the way that s/he views the world 10 reasons why you should study in a foreign country

4. Study abroad will help you develop skills and give you experiences a classroom setting will never provide. It's an opportunity to discover new strengths and abilities, conquer new challenges, and solve new problems. You will encounter situations that are wholly unfamiliar to you and will learn to adapt and respond in effective ways. 5. Study abroad affords you the opportunity to make friends around the world. While abroad, you will meet not only natives to the culture in which you are studying, but also other international students who are as far from home as yourself. 6. Study abroad helps you to learn about yourself. Students who study abroad return home with new ideas and perspectives about themselves and their own culture. The encounter with other cultures enables students to see their own culture through new eyes. 7. Study abroad expands your worldview. In comparison with citizens of most other countries, Americans tend to be uninformed about the world beyond the nation's boundaries. Students who study abroad return home with an informed and much less biased perspective toward other cultures and peoples. Top 10 Continued

Top 10 Continued 8. Study abroad gives you the opportunity to break out of your academic routine. Study abroad is likely to be much unlike what you are used to doing as a student. You may become familiar with an entirely new academic system and you will have the chance to take courses not offered on your home campus. 9. Study abroad enhances employment opportunities. Did you know that only 4% of U.S. undergraduates ever study abroad? Yet, the world continues to become more globalized, American countries are increasingly investing dollars abroad, and companies from countries around the world continue to invest in the international market. Your experience living and studying in a foreign country, negotiating another culture, and acquiring another language will all set you apart from the majority of other job applicants. 10. Study abroad can enhance the value of your degree. While abroad, you can take courses you would never have had the opportunity to take on your home campus. In addition, study abroad gives your language skills such a boost that it is normally quite easy to add a minor in a language or even a second major without having to take many more additional courses after the return to your home campus.

U.S. Students studying abroad • • In 2003/04, about 191,000 American students studied abroad in foreign countries. Ten years ago, approximately 76,000 took part in such programs abroad. That represents a 250% increase in study abroad participation over the last decade. • • Several students study in English-speaking countries, with the UK (32,000 students) and Australia (11,500 students) landing in the top 10 study abroad destinations. Italy and Spain and Italy are nearly tied at spots #2 and #3, each with about 60% of the students that study in the United Kingdom each year. • • Around 40% of students go abroad during their junior year. That means that 60% go abroad at some other time during their studies. • • More women study abroad than men. About 65% of participants each year are female, 35% male. • • The majority of study abroad participants choose to study abroad for one semester (38%) or during a summer term (37%). Only 6% of those studying abroad go for a whole academic year, down from 14% ten years ago. • • Only 7.5% of students studying abroad are foreign language majors. A greater number of students have majors in social sciences, business fields, humanities, and arts.

International students studying in the US • Over 565,000 international students were enrolled in U.S. universities and colleges in 2004/05. • The number of international students in U.S. higher education has leveled off in recent years due to a number of factors, including the obstacles to obtaining student visas since 9/11 and the rising cost of tuition in the United States. • • Nearly half of all U.S. international students come from one of 5 countries: India, China, Korea, Japan, and Canada. Students from Asia make up 58% of the enrolled international students in the U.S. • • In 2004/05, international students spent $13.3 billion in the U.S., most of which derived from sources outside of the U.S. • • The University of Southern California enrolls more international students each year than any other U.S. university. In 2004/05, over 6800 students from other countries studied at USC. • • The 5 U.S. states that attract the most international students, in descending order, are California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and Florida. The foreign students in these states make up about 42% of all international students in the United States. • • The most popular fields of study for students from abroad are in business fields, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. These account for over 43% of declared majors of international students.

Popular Places Several countries in Europe remain top destinations for students choosing to study abroad. Over 60% of students participate in programs in European countries. Latin American countries are the destination of about 15% of U.S. study abroad students each year. While only 7% of students opt to study in Asia, those numbers are on the rise. In the 2003/04 academic year, China, Cuba, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, and also Italy experienced double-digit gains in percentages of students choosing to study there over the previous year.

How do I choose a program? If you are already enrolled at a college or university, the best place to start is at your campus study abroad office. You can see which programs your school offers and what requirements or prerequisites there are. Choosing a program run by your institution is the best guarantee for receiving credit for your experience abroad.To choose a program that fits you, you should decide what goals you have for the trip. For example, if you would like to learn a language, then you should not choose a program in which the courses are taught in your native language or in which you spend most of your time with people from your own country. If you looking for an opportunity to travel, then you should find a program in a central location with public transportation and plenty time off to travel.You should check and find out how the program offered would apply toward your degree, and if it relates to your major. Does the program give you the opportunity to take courses you might not otherwise have the opportunity to take at home?

Where should I study abroad? Deciding where to study is just as important as choosing a study abroad program, and it depends on very personal factors. Different factors are important to different people. If closely integrating the experience with your degree is important to you, then you should consider a location that offers courses in your major and has natural affinities to your major that will afford you experiences in your field of interest outside the classroom, too. If there is a language that especially interests you for either personal or professional reasons, that can help narrow down the choice of countries. Or perhaps you just want to get to know your cultural heritage. The majority of U.S. students choose to study in a European country -- in part because those programs are so well-established. But there are great advantages to taking the path less traveled. Developing nations are playing an increasing role in the global economy and an extended stay in one can really pop out on a resume. However, any study abroad experience is a plus in your search for employment.Also remember that while large cities offer numerous social and intellectual opportunities, they are also more cosmopolitan. Your extracurricular options may seem more limited in a smaller town, but it's there that you will gain more of an appreciation of traditional ways of life and make connections with the natives.

When should I study abroad? Though students have traditionally studied abroad during their junior year, it is increasingly possible to go abroad at just about any time during your studies. When you go is also dependent upon personal factors. If you need to be on campus later in your studies to take hard-core advanced courses in your major, for example, then it may be most convenient for you to go abroad in your sophomore year. If you intend to become fluent in a language while abroad, then it is important to have enough language instruction before you leave to provide a springboard for that development. If you don't yet have a major and it is early in your studies, going abroad is a great way to discover new interests.

How long should I study abroad? Studies show unequivocally that the longer your stay, the more personal, academic, and professional benefits you will reap from the experience. An academic year or a semester abroad allow the kind of cultural immersion that have the deepest impact in terms of personal growth, academic value, and career preparation. Summer programs exist in varied lengths and will not interfere with the schedule of the traditional academic year.Make sure you explore all of your options, however, before you rule out a semester or year abroad. Financial aid may be available, and you may find that you can take courses while abroad that will help you make academic progress toward your degree.

What features of a program are important to look for? • The program is at least a semester in length. • There is a well-developed pre-departure orientation and in-country support to help you adjust to living and studying abroad. • The program gives you the opportunity to interact extensively with natives both in and outside of school. 6 reasons I chose to study abroad during business school

I knew immediately that I wanted to participate in one of the Full-Time Exchange Programs at Kellogg . I didn’t study abroad during my undergrad, so I was excited to have another opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture both in and out of the classroom. I was especially interested in INSEAD Singapore’s exchange program for a few reasons:

• INSEAD’s student population is diverse, so I’d expose myself to more cultures and ways of thinking.
• There are a lot of interesting classes available for exchange students. The class selection can be more limited at other programs.
• I had always wanted to live in Asia, and I was particularly drawn to Singapore’s reputation as a global hub for innovation and the Silicon Valley of Asia.

I completed my exchange at INSEAD Singapore this past quarter, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision and experience — it broadened my horizons and helped me grow professionally and personally. Here are six reasons why I chose to study abroad during business school: 

1.  Gain a global business perspective

At INSEAD, no more than 12% of their student body is of any one nationality, and course material like case studies dives into business problems from all around the world. It was refreshing to participate in discussions and hear perspectives from a global perspective beyond an American lens. I loved that students’ name tags at INSEAD have their nationalities on them, so you have more cultural context behind each student’s class contributions.  

2.  Build my international network  

I  connected with classmates from around the world who I’m looking forward to staying in touch with. I took Market Driving Strategies and competed in a team-based simulation. My team consisted of members from China, Singapore, Thailand, the UK and America. We won first place, showing how diverse teams can lead to better discussions and outcomes.  

3. Step outside of my comfort zone   

Studying abroad and navigating a new country and a new school is a perfect chance to jumpstart growth. It gave me a fresh start where I was able to apply what I learned during my first year of business school in a new setting with new people. Without my usual group of friends to lean on, I was pushed out of my comfort zone and became more independent and confident as a result.  

4. Immerse myself in a new culture 

Living abroad can come with its own unique challenges such as finding long-term housing, but it also gave me the opportunity to take things slower and dive deeper into a country’s culture and society.  

Singapore has a large Chinese population allowing me to reconnect with my roots and cultural heritage, especially through food and traditions. For example, Chinese New Year is widely celebrated in Singapore, and it was special to experience the holiday while living there and to see signs of it all around the city since it’s not as big of a celebration in the United States.  

 5. Travel to new places  

I took advantage of already being abroad to explore as much of Asia as possible, particularly Southeast Asia, since it has some of the best diving in the world. I was able to put my certified open-water scuba diver skills to full use! Singapore served as an excellent hub for traveling throughout Asia, and INSEAD’s class structure allowed me to take a lot of extended trips in between classes.   INSEAD’s term is only eight weeks, so I had an extra month to travel before classes at Kellogg started again. After my term in Singapore wrapped up, I moved to Hong Kong for the next month and used it as my travel base to explore more of East Asia. The timing worked out since my fiancé, who is also a Kellogg student, was doing his global exchange in Hong Kong at the same time.  Flights within Asia are very affordable and traveling within Southeast Asia especially can be done on a budget, so I had the best time going on trips to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Korea with a mix of Kellogg and INSEAD friends. I even got to meet up with the Kellogg students who were doing an exchange program in Japan while there!  

6. Make lifelong friends  

Studying abroad can help you develop a deeper bond with your fellow Kellogg exchange students. There’s something about spending eight weeks living in a foreign country and going through a transformative experience together that leads to lifelong friendships.   I’m looking forward to reuniting with my classmates for my final quarter of business school back at Kellogg!
