Artificial intelligence isn’t coming for your job, but it will be your new coworker. Here’s how to get along.

Will smart machines really replace human workers? Probably not. People and AI both bring different abilities and strengths to the table. The real question is: how can human intelligence work with artificial intelligence to produce augmented intelligence. Chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov offers some unique insight here. After losing to IBM’s Deep Blue, he began to experiment how a computer helper changed players’ competitive advantage in high-level chess games. What he discovered was that having the best players and the best program was less a predictor of success than having a really good process. Put simply, “Weak human + machine + better process was superior to a strong computer alone and, more remarkably, superior to a strong human + machine + inferior process.” As leaders look at how to incorporate AI into their organizations, they’ll have to manage expectations as AI is introduced, invest in bringing teams together and perfecting processes, and refine their own leadership abilities.

In an economy where data is changing how companies create value — and compete — experts predict that using artificial intelligence (AI) at a larger scale will add as much as $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030 . As AI is changing how companies work, many believe that who does this work will change, too — and that organizations will begin to replace human employees with intelligent machines . This is already happening: intelligent systems are displacing humans in manufacturing, service delivery, recruitment, and the financial industry, consequently moving human workers towards lower-paid jobs or making them unemployed. This trend has led some to conclude that in 2040 our workforce may be totally unrecognizable .

As science fiction has predicted, AI has become more integral to our everyday lives. We use them as smart virtual assistants, computer systems managers, and more. The artificial intelligence vs. human intelligence debate has come to a head. On one side of the argument are those who claim machines will eventually surpass humans in cognitive abilities because of our slow biological evolution.

On the other side are those who focus on our cognitive capabilities and how useful AI can be in the creative process. Artificial intelligence is meant to emulate human intelligence but relies on algorithms and training data instead of human experience and historical data to make decisions. Although AI can process vast amounts of information quickly and accurately, there are still several areas where AI needs to improve. This article will explore human abilities and AI to better understand their differences.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Intelligence: Will it Replace Us?

People are concerned that AI could replace humans in the near future and their jobs aren’t safe. However, regarding artificial intelligence vs. human intelligence, AI doesn’t have the same understanding and intuition as humans. Humans can think conceptually and understand ideas in a way that AI cannot. We can also use our experience and knowledge of the human world to connect disparate information. AI still relies on data and algorithms to perform human-like actions, meaning it struggles with ambiguous or complex problems.

From a technological standpoint, artificial intelligence has made tremendous advances over recent years. Thanks to advancements in deep learning algorithms and machine learning techniques, AI can now act “human” in ways that were once thought impossible. For example, AI can recognize faces, navigate complex environments, build business plans, comprehend complex ideas, hold conversations, speed up cognitive functions, and respond to natural language queries.

How the human brain works and how AI tries to mimic human behavior

Genetics, upbringing, and exposure to different environments influence human intelligence and the conduct of our fellow human beings. Therefore, shaping one’s environment by using past experiences and applying new information is crucial.

AI-powered machines can provide information about a person with a similar skill set or background, diplomatic information that a locator or spy was assigned to gain, and details about interpersonal relationships and how the human brain consumes information. Full artificial intelligence, however, can only process available information and cannot make decisions based on its understanding.

Still, an AI system tries to mimic intelligent behavior by:

  • Utilizing machine learning algorithms to identify patterns in data.
  • Developing models that are based on the same objectives as humans.
  • AI machines use neural networks to simulate human behavior.
  • Use acquired knowledge to understand how people respond in certain situations.

Why human brains are better than AI systems

While it’s challenging to demonstrate how the human race is more capable than AI, human intelligence has certain advantages. Human intelligence refers to the ability to think, maintain self-awareness, reason, and problem-solve. It’s also used to make decisions based on values, ethical standards, common sense, and emotions.

The human brain’s potential makes us all creative problem solvers. We can think abstractly and do complex tasks intuitively, creating solutions that aren’t immediately obvious. We can recognize and take advantage of opportunities that may not be available to AI systems.

Moreover, humans have the capacity for empathy and emotion during social interaction – something AI systems are incapable of right now. As emotional creatures, we can understand the feelings of another human being, which is crucial for navigating interpersonal relationships and building trust.

Do AI systems possess the capacity for creativity?

Arguably, AI cannot think abstractly and take creative approaches to problem-solving, but both human and artificial intelligence can solve complex problems. They lack the emotional intelligence of the human intellect. The ability to recognize, understand and respond to emotions is something that only humans possess. AI can do specific tasks faster or more accurately. However, this doesn’t mean that AI will soon replace humans in the workforce.

While machine intelligence can excel at pattern recognition, data science, complex data analysis, natural language processing, and cognitive science, it still lacks imagination. Although AI can learn from its mistakes through deep learning, it can’t understand and react to complex social situations. Therefore, AI won’t replace humans anytime soon in healthcare or in-person customer service jobs.

Why intelligent machines can be better than human beings

On the other hand, AI systems can be more reliable than humans in certain situations. Smart machines can solve mathematical problems in seconds and efficiently do other human-like tasks. The physical limitations of being human are where intelligent machines excel. AI doesn’t experience fatigue or lack of motivation; they can work nonstop without breaks. AI systems can also quickly process vast amounts of data in image processing and data mining, which humans must practice to achieve proficiency.

In addition, Artificial Intelligence systems aren’t subject to emotional bias like the human thought process; they can make decisions objectively without personal preferences. This may benefit human intervention in certain situations, such as for human error when making medical diagnoses or evaluating legal information. In addition, we can train AI systems to respond differently in specific scenarios. AI systems can quickly adapt to environmental changes and adjust their behavior accordingly.

Why AI could be bad for creativity

Although AI is great for precise tasks that require accuracy, it lacks creativity because it lacks imagination and is designed to follow instructions to achieve specific goals. AI can’t be creative because it focuses on achieving the results you want and doesn’t excel at deviating from its instructions or generating unexpected solutions to problems. But, if you think about it, that’s the whole point of creativity.

AI is limited in its ability to approach a problem from different angles or generate unconventional solutions since it operates based on programmed instructions to achieve specific objectives. As such, its focus is narrow and directed, which precludes thinking creatively or outside the box. Therefore, AI and creativity are fundamentally distinct concepts. So you see, AI vs humans when creativity is involved doesn’t quite make sense and could be detrimental to overall human creativity.

If we rely on AI tools too much for our creative endeavors, our creativity will be stifled by the analytical lens of AI algorithms. In addition, creativity requires exploration, experimentation, and risk-taking – impossible qualities for AI systems to exhibit. As a result, our reliance on AI can decrease society’s creativity level.

It’s important to remember that AI is a computer science tool humans designed for a purpose. While it can be helpful in creative tasks, AI isn’t a creative force. Moreover, we have to remember that AI is limited in its capacity to understand imagination. Nevertheless, advertising, marketing, and product design frequently incorporate artificial intelligence.

AI-generated ads are created by computer programs that follow specific instructions. Though AI can create art, AI-generated art is systematic and produced without human judgment or the touch of an artist’s unique perspective, often providing art with meaning and view. So, AI can be creative, but only in the sense that it can generate art from training data.

AI is a tool created to think like a human, but within a strict set of guidelines, it can’t make decisions outside its purview. Until we train AI to understand the nuances of the human condition and make it believe it’s human, it will remain a data-based tool. AI can catalyze the creative process and human-like actions, but it doesn’t replace our unique insight. To use AI to its fullest potential, we must understand its limits and recognize that its ability to think, act, and create is still far less advanced than the human mind.

The index is an independent initiative at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), led by the AI Index Steering Committee, an interdisciplinary group of experts from across academia and industry. This year’s report covers the rise of multimodal foundation models, major cash investments into generative AI, new performance benchmarks, shifting global opinions, and new major regulations.

A Move Toward Open-Sourced

This past year, organizations released 149 foundation models, more than double the number released in 2022. Of these newly released models, 65.7% were open-source (meaning they can be freely used and modified by anyone), compared with only 44.4% in 2022 and 33.3% in 2021.

But At a Cost of Performance?

Closed-source models still outperform their open-sourced counterparts. On 10 selected benchmarks, closed models achieved a median performance advantage of 24.2%, with differences ranging from as little as 4.0% on mathematical tasks like GSM8K to as much as 317.7% on agentic tasks like AgentBench.

Biggest Players

Industry dominates AI, especially in building and releasing foundation models. This past year Google edged out other industry players in releasing the most models, including Gemini and RT-2. In fact, since 2019, Google has led in releasing the most foundation models, with a total of 40, followed by OpenAI with 20. Academia trails industry: This past year, UC Berkeley released three models and Stanford two.

Industry Dwarfs All

If you needed more striking evidence that corporate AI is the only player in the room right now, this should do it. In 2023, industry accounted for 72% of all new foundation models.

Prices Skyrocket

One of the reasons academia and government have been edged out of the AI race: the exponential increase in cost of training these giant models. Google’s Gemini Ultra cost an estimated $191 million worth of compute to train, while OpenAI’s GPT-4 cost an estimated $78 million. In comparison, in 2017, the original Transformer model, which introduced the architecture that underpins virtually every modern LLM, cost around $900.

What AI Race?

At least in terms of notable machine learning models, the United States vastly outpaced other countries in 2023, developing a total of 61 models in 2023. Since 2019, the U.S. has consistently led in originating the majority of notable models, followed by China and the UK.

Move Over, Human

As of 2023, AI has hit human-level performance on many significant AI benchmarks, from those testing reading comprehension to visual reasoning. Still, it falls just short on some benchmarks like competition-level math. Because AI has been blasting past so many standard benchmarks, AI scholars have had to create new and more difficult challenges. This year’s index also tracked several of these new benchmarks, including those for tasks in coding, advanced reasoning, and agentic behavior.

Private Investment Drops (But We See You, GenAI)

While AI private investment has steadily dropped since 2021, generative AI is gaining steam. In 2023, the sector attracted $25.2 billion, nearly ninefold the investment of 2022 and about 30 times the amount from 2019 (call it the ChatGPT effect). Generative AI accounted for over a quarter of all AI-related private investments in 2023.

U.S. Wins $$ Race

And again, in 2023 the United States dominates in AI private investment. In 2023, the $67.2 billion invested in the U.S. was roughly 8.7 times greater than the amount invested in the next highest country, China, and 17.8 times the amount invested in the United Kingdom. That lineup looks the same when zooming out: Cumulatively since 2013, the United States leads investments at $335.2 billion, followed by China with $103.7 billion, and the United Kingdom at $22.3 billion.

Where is Corporate Adoption?

More companies are implementing AI in some part of their business: In surveys, 55% of organizations said they were using AI in 2023, up from 50% in 2022 and 20% in 2017. Businesses report using AI to automate contact centers, personalize content, and acquire new customers.

Younger and Wealthier People Worry About Jobs

Globally, most people expect AI to change their jobs, and more than a third expect AI to replace them. Younger generations — Gen Z and millennials — anticipate more substantial effects from AI compared with older generations like Gen X and baby boomers. Specifically, 66% of Gen Z compared with 46% of boomer respondents believe AI will significantly affect their current jobs. Meanwhile, individuals with higher incomes, more education, and decision-making roles foresee AI having a great impact on their employment.

While the Commonwealth Worries About AI Products

When asked in a survey about whether AI products and services make you nervous, 69% of Aussies and 65% of Brits said yes. Japan is the least worried about their AI products at 23%.

Regulation Rallies

More American regulatory agencies are passing regulations to protect citizens and govern the use of AI tools and data. For example, the Copyright Office and the Library of Congress passed copyright registration guidance concerning works that contained material generated by AI, while the Securities and Exchange Commission developed a cybersecurity risk management strategy, governance, and incident disclosure plan. The agencies to pass the most regulation were the Executive Office of the President and the Commerce Department.

The index collaborates with such organizations as LinkedIn, Quid, McKinsey, Studyportals, the Schwartz Reisman Institute, and the International Federation of Robotics to gather the most current research and feature important insights on the AI ecosystem.

The stunning capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) challenge the long-held belief that creativity differentiates humans from machine learning algorithms. Has AI technology exceeded humans in the creative realm? A new study compares the abilities of AI versus humans in creative divergent thinking with potential insights on the future of work in creative domains.

The Future of Jobs Report 2023, by the World Economic Forum (WEF), states the most important skills for workers in 2023 are the cognitive skills of analytical and creative thinking . According to the WEF report, creative thinking is growing more in importance compared to analytical thinking.

Increasingly, AI technology is being used for creative purposes. According to a 2023 Statista survey of 4,500 American professionals, 37 percent of those surveyed who are working in advertisement or marketing had used AI to assist with work tasks.

“With AI systems becoming increasingly capable of performing tasks that were once solely within the purview of humans, concerns have been raised about the potential displacement of jobs and its implications for future employment prospects,” wrote the study co-authors Simone Grassini and Mika Koivisto, Ph.D.

Grassini is an Associate Professor at the department of psychosocial science of the University of Bergen, Norway, and at the cognitive and behavioral neuroscience laboratory at the University of Stavanger, Norway. Koivisto is a university lecturer in psychology at the University of Turku in Finland.

“The development and widespread availability of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT or MidJourney, has sparked a lively debate about numerous aspects of their integration into society, as well as about the nature of creativity in humans and AI,” the authors wrote.

Large language models are AI deep learning algorithms that are trained using unsupervised learning with massively large data sets, often scraped from the Internet, in order to “understand” existing content and generate new content. Examples of large language models include OpenAI Codex, and the OpenAI LLMs for its AI chatbot ChatGPT (GPT-4 and GPT-3), GPT-4 for Microsoft’s AI chatbot Bing Chat, BLOOM by HuggingFace, the Megatron-Turing Natural Language Generation 530B by NVIDIA and Microsoft, Anthropic’s Claude (for AI chatbot Claude 2), Meta’s LLaMA, Salesforce Einstein GPT (Using OpenAI LLM), the PaLM 2 that powers Bard, Google’s AI chatbot, and Amazon’s Titan.

To measure the creativity of humans versus AI, the researchers used the Alternative Uses Test (AUT), a test designed by American psychologist J.P. Guilford, one of the eminent psychologists of the 20 th century according to the American Psychological Association (APA). The AI chatbots evaluated include ChatGPT3 (version 3.5), ChatGPT4, and Copy.Ai, which is based on GPT3 technology.

Guilford views intelligence as an aggregate of many mental factors or abilities, rather than one dominating general ability. Guilford’s theory of human intelligence consists of the three dimensions of operations ( cognition , memory , divergent production, convergent production, evaluation), products (units, classes, relations, systems, transformations, and implications), and contents (visual, auditory, symbolic, semantic, behavioral).

Guilford considered creativity as a form of problem-solving and a part of intelligence. Problem-solving abilities could be further defined as sensitivity to problems, fluency (ideational, associational, and expressional), and flexibility (spontaneous and adaptive).

Guilford is credited for introducing the terms “divergent and convergent thinking” in the 1956 theory of human intelligence called the Structure of Intellect Model (SI). Brainstorming is an example of divergent thinking, where many ideas are generated in response to an open-ended task or question. In contrast, the output of convergent thinking is a single correct answer to a well-defined problem.

In this study, the tasks included generating creative and original uses of everyday objects, such as a rope, box, pencil, and candle. The researchers found that, unlike the response generated by the AI chatbots, the 256 human study participants had generated a relatively high proportion of what could be considered sub-par ideas, or common responses.

“The results suggest that AI has reached at least the same level, or even surpassed, the average human's ability to generate ideas in the most typical test of creative thinking (AUT),” the researchers concluded.

However, the AI chatbots lacked consistency and the top human performers achieved better results than AI, the study results showed. The research has provided a snapshot of AI’s creativity versus humans. Grassini and Koivisto caution that this may change six months from now as AI technology continues to rapidly advance in the future.

The creator economy is booming, with more people than ever monetizing their passions by producing digital content including videos, podcasts, newsletters, online courses, and more. But a potential disruptor looms on the horizon that could reshape the landscape: artificial intelligence.

AI language models can now generate stunningly coherent long-form content on almost any topic in seconds. AI image generators can produce unique visual art from text prompts. We are rapidly approaching a point where AI could theoretically automate the production of many types of digital content and creative works at a fraction of the cost of paying human creators.

Does this spell doom for the creator economy as we know it? Will AI completely displace human creatives and make us obsolete? Or can human creators adapt, double down on their unique strengths, and continue thriving alongside AI?

The Potential Disruption of AI

The raw capabilities of AI systems like GPT-3, DALL-E, and their successors are nothing short of startling. With just a simple text prompt, they can churn out blog posts, scripts, essays, poetry, images, code, and more in the blink of an eye. What might have taken a professional human creator days or weeks of work can now be produced nearly instantaneously by an AI.

From a business perspective, the economics are compelling. Why pay a writer $500 for a 2,000 word article when an AI can produce something arguably as good for just a few cents worth of computing power? Why hire an expensive creative agency for branding and design when you can get an infinite number of unique logo concepts, product mockups, and marketing visuals from an AI for virtually no cost?

The elephant in the room is quality. Can AI truly match human-level quality and creativity, especially for premium content and artistic works? The answer is... maybe not yet, but the gap is narrowing rapidly. AI language models are already producing college-level essays and reasonably coherent articles. AI image generators are creating truly unique and striking digital art and product designs. We're likely not too far away from artificial general intelligence (AGI) that could reasonably be considered sentient, creative, and self-aware.

This looming disruption has creators understandably rattled. Their livelihoods are potentially at stake if their skills become easily automatable and commoditized by AI. Even if the quality isn't quite there yet, clients and businesses will surely flock to AI as a much cheaper alternative for all but the most premium creative work.

The Unique Value of Human Creators

While the rise of AI undoubtedly poses challenges for human creators, I don’t believe it will displace them. Instead, it will shift the nature of their work and profession in fundamental ways.

For one, humans still possess vital traits that even the most advanced AI systems struggle with: true creativity, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, judgment, and high-level reasoning. AI models today are simply regurgitating patterns from their training data in novel ways. They lack the subjective experiences, real-world context, and cognitive complexity that allows humans to connect disparate ideas, ask deeper questions, and create things that are genuinely new and meaningful.

Human creators can bring those elements to the table in a way AI cannot. A content creator who has lived experiences related to their subject matter can infuse their work with authenticity, nuance, and perspective. A visual artist's creativity is shaped by their personal feelings, cultural influences, and view of the world around them. An AI programmed by an elite Silicon Valley lab cannot fully capture the diaspora of the human experience in all its richness and diversity.

Additionally, AI is still lacking at higher-level creative skills like big-picture strategy, storytelling across multiple mediums, and designing cohesive, long-term creative campaigns and universes. A human creator has the conceptual abilities to craft nuanced, multi-layered creative visions and bring them to life. AI is more about filling in the dots, not connecting them into grand creative narratives.

Moreover, the most successful creators don't just produce content - they build an entire personal brand, community, and business around their creative talents. Qualities like likeability, communication skills, entrepreneurial hustle, relationships, and cultural relevance are key drivers of many creators' success. These human-centric factors aren't easily replicable by AI.

Finding The Right Symbiosis

The reality is that AI will likely not completely replace human creators, but rather subsume certain aspects of the creative process and workflow. In my company we are already working on a human-AI hybrid model, with AI handling the heavy lifting of research, rough script drafts, iterating on YouTube thumbnail concepts, and producing raw creative assets, while the team then builds on these.

The most successful creators will be those who learn to effectively team up with AI as a force-multiplier for their creative abilities rather than letting it displace them entirely. They'll figure out the human-AI symbiotic sweet spot - leveraging AI's raw creative capabilities and scalability, while layering on top their distinctly human creative genius to create commercial creative works that are both novel and resonate emotionally and culturally.

While AI will be a powerful tool that transforms the creative process, I believe it will elevate the value and demand for truly premium, high-concept human creativity that machines still cannot match.

The bottom line is that while certain human creative roles, mediums, and workflows may be disrupted or displaced by AI, human creativity itself - along with the skills, relationships, and business savvy required to successfully bring it to market - will remain highly relevant and valuable.

Those human creators who can adapt by combining their uniquely human strengths with the exponential creative potential of AI may find themselves even more powerful, prolific, and in demand than ever before.

An AI test pilot has successfully flown a jet fighter in dogfights against human opponents. It's the latest development for DARPA's Air Combat Evaluation program, which is trying to develop aerospace AI agents that can be trusted to perform safely.

Human test pilots have a bit of a reputation thanks to popular culture—from The Right Stuff to Top Gun: Maverick , the profession has been portrayed as a place for loose cannons with a desire to go fast and break the rules. The reality is pretty far from that these days, especially where DARPA is concerned.

The agency instead wants a machine-learning agent that can safely fly a real aircraft autonomously, with no violations of training rules. After all, neural networks have their own reputation—at this point well-earned—for finding ways to exploit situations that hadn't occurred to humans. And the consequences when controlling a real jet fighter can be a lot more severe than just testing in silico .

In this case, the jet fighter is called the X-62A Variable Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft, or VISTA. It began life as an F-16D (Block 30) two-seater, which spent most of its 32-year career working at the US Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB.

Over the years, the plane, previously designated the NF-16D, has been modified to simulate the flight characteristics of other aircraft while in flight. "It has given almost a thousand students and staff members the opportunity to practice testing aircraft with dangerously poor flying qualities and to execute risk-reduction flight test programs for advanced technologies," said William Gray, chief test pilot of VISTA and the USAF Test Pilot School.

That made it a natural candidate for DARPA's ACE program, and in 2021, the process of modifying the aircraft began once again as it became the X-62A.

The USAF and DARPA started conducting X-62A test flights under AI control in December 2022, logging 17 hours by the time we first learned of the program in early 2023. Although DARPA's AI agent flew the X-62A, there was always a pair of human pilots onboard to monitor the test flight and, if necessary, take control. But in those early tests, the X-62A flew against simulated adversaries.

By September 2023, the program had completed 21 test flights, including the first-ever AI versus human aerial engagement within visual range, flying against a human-piloted F-16. During that time, DARPA says the team made over 100,000 lines of flight-critical software changes, which it called "an unprecedented rate of development."

That's certainly an achievement, but just focusing on the dogfight is a mistake, according to Gray. "That misses the point. Dogfighting was the problem to solve so we could start testing autonomous artificial intelligence systems in the air, but every lesson we're learning applies to every task we can give to an autonomous system," he said.
