A good speech in school will earn you the admiration of your teachers and peers alike. You probably won't deliver the kind of speech you hear in the movies, but that's a good thing: people will enjoy your original take much more. From getting an idea to conquering stage fright, here are the steps to take if you want to make your final speech a memorable, exciting success.

Writing the Speech

• If you're not sure which theme to choose, write down or summarize a few stories and statements you could include in your speech. Pick the ones you like best and see if there's a unifying theme to tie them together.
• See What to Do and What Not to Do for more advice on themes.

• Don't interrupt one point with a clause, or section set aside by commas or parentheses. Instead of saying "Our tennis and basketball teams, which we all know won the regional championships two years ago, need increased funding to compete," say "Our tennis and basketball teams both won the regional championships two years ago. Now we need to increase their funding to compete with other schools."
• You can reference your school's slang once or twice to get a laugh, but don't overdo it, especially if there are parents in the audience.

• Find a broad message that your whole audience can connect to their own life, but still deals with a specific idea. For instance: "Become an even better version of the hero who inspired you." (But don't steal your "original" idea from this website!)
• Your stories can be specific incidents in your life or from history, but you should connect them to a more general idea. For instance, you could tell a story about your sibling's hospital visit, then go on to talk about overcoming fear and hardship in general.
• If you like what you're writing but it doesn't fit the theme you had planned, it's fine to adjust your topic or switch it entirely. Switch back and forth between writing stories and brainstorming a theme if you keep getting stuck.

• Surprise your audience by diving right into a tough story. "When I was ten years old, I lost my father."
• Make your audience laugh by telling a joke, especially one that everyone in the room will get. "Hello everyone. Let's have a round of applause for the guy who installed air conditioning."
• Start with a grand, thought-provoking statement. "Our galaxy contains billions of earth-like planets, and we're only just beginning to discover them."
• Most likely, someone else will introduce you, and many of your classmates know you already. Unless you're asked specifically to introduce yourself, you can get right to the good stuff.

• To use an example from earlier, if your theme is "Become an even better version of the hero who inspired you," you could begin your speech with two or three sentence about your hero, then say "You all have heroes who inspire you, but you don't have to just follow them. You can become even greater than the people you look up to."

• Include phrases such as "Now I'd like to talk about..." and "But we should also remember..." when moving on to your next idea.

• Build up to a big ending, then crack a joke to wrap up a funny speech. "And I know when you walk to the ballot box tomorrow, you'll be ready to do the right thing. Protect the interests of yourself and your school by washing your hands afterward. Do you know how many people touch that thing?"
• If you're giving a commencement speech, leave people feeling excited or awed about the future. This is a big moment and you have the power to help them realize it. "Years from now, you will be the father or mother your kid looks up to. The writer who changes the way we think. The inventor who creates new ways to live. Come up to the stage and start becoming heroes!"

• Have a teacher, family member, or trusted friend check it over for grammar mistakes and offer feedback. Spelling isn't as important, since you'll be speaking out loud.

• If your topic involves a lot of numbers, plan to write them on the board so your audience can remember them

• Your notes are there to remind you what to say next and of important facts. "Move on to bear wrestling story (guy's name is Paul Bunyan)" is the level of detail you need.

Practicing and Delivering the Speech

• Practice giving your speech in as situation as similar to your actual speech as possible.
• In general, you should stay fairly still while giving a speech. Small hand gestures and occasionally moving to a new spot are fine, especially if they help you feel and appear confident

• If you speech is too long, you absolutely need to cut some material out of it or shorten the longer stories or ideas. If you're giving a commencement speech, aim for a 10 or 15 minute maximum. An election speech should be no more than a few minutes, and your teacher should be able to tell you the time limit for a class assignment speech.

• If you can't stop rushing, work out how long you should spend on each section and write the number of minutes at the top of each index card or paragraph. Practice near a clock so you can check whether you're on pace.

• Use slightly different words each time once you have the main ideas down. Try not to get caught up on exact memorization; using a new phrase to communicate the written idea makes your speech sound more natural.

• Practice varying your facial expression if your face looks fixed and mechanical.
• Try to vary the tone of your voice as well. Don't make it sound like you're reciting every word from memory; pretend you're speaking in ordinary conversation.

• Try to make eye contact with different members of your audience throughout the speech. Don't stare at any one person for too long.
• Resist the temptation to hide by standing near a corner or large object.
• Don't fidget, tap your foot, or make other nervous gestures. Try slowly walking back and forth across the stage to get rid of your nervous energy.

• Dressing nicely will increase your confidence and gain respect and attention from your audience.

What to Do and What Not to Do

• Memories your class shares and personal memories that many people will connect to, such as your first day at the school.
• Overcoming obstacles. Talk about how your classmates overcame problems related to academics, finances, and health, and how proud everyone is that they're standing here.
• The diversity of your classmates and celebrating the rich variety of experiences, personalities, and interests at your school. Describe some of the many ways people will go on to do good in the world.

• Address your audience directly. Ask them questions to get them thinking, although you shouldn't expect an answer.
• Use groups of three. The human brain loves repetition, and especially trios. Start three sentences with the same phrase, speaking louder each sentence.
• Use emotive language. Try to provoke a strong emotional response in your audience, not present a list of facts to them.

• Don't tell stories that only a few friends will understand. Even references that your whole class will get should be used sparingly if there are parents in the room as well.

• Go change the world!
• Today is not the last day of your education, but the first.
• The future belongs to you.
• If elected, I will be the voice of the students.
• It's time for change!

• If you're giving a high school commencement speech, remember that not everyone in your class will be attending college. Don't joke about your education letting you avoid a "bad" profession; chances are good there's a parent who has that job out in the audience.=

We all went to school, and we have cared for and loved each and every moment in school, as those are the building blocks of our lives. The school is the first place where people can get education and knowledge. It is a platform that enhances one's personality. In Hinduism, school is called the "temple of knowledge".

A school is a place or institution where we first start our education.

Teachers carry out the teaching tasks at schools, and students are made to learn through guidance.

There is a strong rapport between the teacher and the student. Teachers motivate students to learn.

Apart from education, students also learn discipline and etiquette.

All the students are treated equally at the school.

The modern-day schools are different from the ancient schools.

It helps with mental and social development.

It also helps students learn new skills.

There are some schools that not only provide education on subjects but also traditional education like the vedas.

There are three types of schooling—primary and secondary and senior secondary.

Schools are known as temples of knowledge. Schools provide a balanced education that strengthens students both physically and mentally. Not only academics, but schools also concentrate on different activities that include sports, cultural activities, communication skills, and time management.

School days are one of everyone's favorite memories. It is known to be the best phase of one's life. My school days were a learning experience for me. where I started learning the alphabets and can now solve real-world problems. What I learned in school will always be with me. It was an unforgettable journey that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

I studied at a school that taught me etiquette, time management, and discipline. It has the capacity to produce toppers. The best quality of my school is that, apart from academics, it also focuses on sports.

My school holds a variety of science quizzes and sports competitions to help students improve their grades. My school is a home where my teachers are like parents and my friends are like family who care for each other. My school has taught me self-discipline. Schools have a great culture and environment.

We do know that the first and last days of our school were memorable days. We arrive at school with an empty bag, and we leave with a bag full of memories, learnings, and emotions.

School teaches us what is right and wrong, good and bad, the importance of discipline, and the importance of time. Teachers encourage students to grow intellectually. Teachers play an extraordinary role in transmitting their knowledge to students.

School is a place where we socialize, grow, learn, and establish ourselves . Teachers guide us when we are in need. Teachers are known as the foundation of any educational institution.

Before entering the real world, students learn how to think at school. Students are exposed to new ideas, and they are encouraged to develop their critical thinking. Consuming knowledge in new subjects can improve children's skills and help them grow exponentially.

We also learn about teamwork through different activities. They offer a variety of activities to help teams function better. They aid in the preparation, guidance, and training of the bright mind for the future. The best schools always produce the best students.

There is a famous saying that "one book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the whole world."

My School Experience

My high school helped me grow as a person inside and outside of the classroom by making me more confident and independent. My school has taught me the importance of independence. My high school days are fully filled with fun and excitement .

In high school, one becomes mature enough to understand the values. In that phase, I learned to direct myself. I learned about hard work and dedication toward my goal. My friends used to guide me when I was in need. I have some good pictures of them. The pictures from my school days are the best memories. I remember the days when we used to participate in extracurricular activities.

I have good memories of middle school. It was not just into academics and sports but also included music, dance, and some indoor games. My school had a library where different types of books were placed. It also used to have a robotics lab and a computer lab where highly trained staff helped us learn new skills. Our teachers not only taught the lessons but also helped us attend various competitions. I even represented my school in a quiz competition and won a prize for the school.

The biggest reason behind the success of my school is our principal. He is very active and disciplined, and his knowledge is commendable. The experiences we get in school life help us grow as humans. Everyone should remember that not everyone is fortunate enough to receive an education, so if the opportunity arises, one should seize it.

Importance of Education

Many people don't know the importance of education, and being educated plays an important role in society. Education shapes the modern world.

An educated person can understand moral values better than an uneducated person. So, education creates a better society.

People can overcome all problems by finding optimal solutions with the help of education. Education is known as the backbone of society.

Education leads to innovation and creativity. They occur when an educated or skilled person understands how to advance technology.

Education helps every individual develop their personality. It helps them to develop their ethical values, sympathy, empathy toward society, etc.

The government should take some steps to create awareness among the citizens and make society better.

‘A very good morning to all the guests, teachers and my fellow schoolmates. It gives me immense pleasure to stand here today and share my thoughts on delivering my thoughts on a speech on learning. 

The famous philosopher Plato once said, ¨Do not train children to learn by force and harshness, but direct them to it by amusing their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.¨ With this quote we can highlight the fact that learning should not be like a task instead it should be an adventure that keeps our spirits high for our imaginations and as well as of creativity.

For example, once I was observing ants who were busy with their daily chores of work. I was amazed to see their team spirit, discipline, and perseverance. In real we should also follow the same and to cultivate the skills should read biographies of great personalities, whose life journeys will inspire us to dream big with discipline. 

While academics are undoubtedly important, it is equally important to gain skills in life such as critical thinking, communication, empathy and adaptability. For example, working together on a school project helps us to understand the value of teamwork. Moreover, participating in the competition not only helps in developing learning but also prepares us for the highly competitive world. A mindset where we students believe our talents can be nurtured through dedication and endless possibilities.

As we step into the future as educated citizens of tomorrow, let us promise ourselves that we will keep learning and upgrading our skills as well as knowledge. And yet the truth remains that many, many people across the world do not have the right or ability to receive an education. Many of these people might be able to do great things if only they had the means to do so.

In such a scenario, it becomes important to spread awareness about education. Delivering speeches is one of the best ways to do so, as through speeches one can make a more personal connection with the people attending & make it more likely that they will actually do something about it.

However, it’s also true that education is a topic that many, many people have spoken about. In such a scenario, you might find yourself wondering what you can do to make your speech stand apart from all the ones that came before.

So, find a unique angle for the speech. Draw on your personal experiences and ask yourself: is there anything about this topic that I can see but others can’t?

2. Include Concrete Elements 

Concrete details or elements include things like facts, statistics, etc. 

If you don’t include concrete elements in your speech, then chances are that your speech will become abstract and hard to believe really fast.

3. Use Language & Concepts Familiar To The Audience

Often, speakers have this misconception that the bigger or more difficult words they use, the better or smarter they’re going to sound. This cannot be further from the truth.

While using complicated words or concepts might make you sound smarter, they also increase the chances that you won’t be able to formulate a connection with the audience. 

After all, if they can’t understand what they’re saying, how will they connect with it?

4. Incorporate Storytelling & Props 

Stories are a GREAT way to make your speech more personal and engaging. And props, if used alongside your story, can take it to the next level. 

So, make sure to incorporate appropriate personal stories and props in your speech. Make sure that your prop is relevant to the speech, and not merely an accessory. 

5. Make Them Feel, Not Just Hear 

If you truly want your audience to be impacted by your speech, then you need to make them feel more deeply about it. You need to make them go beyond hearing and actually feel for you and the topic. 

This can be done by sprinkling throughout your speech elements like humor, stories, props, videos, real-life testimonials, interacting with them…

The list goes on. 

What matters is going above and beyond. You want to make your words mean more than their meaning. 

6. Use Humor

Humor is a great way to take any speech to the next level. Like stories, jokes are a great way to form a connection with the audience and make your speech more memorable.

However, one thing to keep in mind here is to make sure that your humor is relevant to the topic at hand. Don’t just add jokes for the sake of adding them: make sure that they relate to your speech in some way.

7. Don’t Have Too Many Points

While it’s important to make sure that your speech covers all aspects that it needs to cover, you don’t have to include too many points in your speech. This will make it difficult for the audience to figure out what, exactly, is the central theme or main message that you want them to take away.

You can have one or two key takeaways and divide those main points into multiple individual points. This will allow for better structure of your speech, whilst also making it easier to view it from multiple angles.

1. Open With A Story 

This is a tried and tested way to open your speech. As mentioned before, it’s imperative you incorporate stories into your speech if you wish to make a personal connection with the audience and make them feel for your speech.

Another awesome way to open your speech is by surprising your audience. This will awaken them, and snap their attention to where it needs to be: on you. 

This adds doubly to your credit if your speech is on a seemingly monotonous topic like education where the audience enters with certain expectations about the speech already in place. 

There are many ways to do this. Stories with a twist are one. Another would be incorporating a joke. Yet another way would be to pull out a prop. Or you could even say a surprising statement that seems to go against the topic when you first hear it.

3. Common-Ground Open 

A common ground opening is imperative if there is a gap between you and your audience. If, for example, you’re an aged professor from a reputed university and the audience is teenagers from a local high school, then there are going to be gaps in how you and the audience perceive the world. 

You can bridge this gap in a couple of ways. One would be making a personal connection or making them see that you are similar in certain aspects. This can be done by using humor, incorporating stories, or even making a pop culture reference. You can also open with a shared goal or interest. 

For example:  When I was in high school, all I wanted to do was get out of it.

4. Open With A Show Of Hands 

Another great way to open your speech is by asking questions–particularly show of hands questions. 

This works in two ways: asking the question piques your audience’s attention and gets their thoughts rolling. On the other hand, show-of-hands provides them with a chance to move their body, which aids in making them more aware of their surroundings i.e you. 

For example:  How many of you wish you could get out of this classroom right now?

5. Open With An Image Or Prop 

Images tell stories. And stories, as mentioned above, are one of the best ways to open your speech. 

You can open your speech by showing the audience an image of something and then asking them a question about it or presenting a startling fact about it. Alternatively, you could also open your speech by employing a relevant prop.

Title: The Missing Ramp

On a school field trip in grade 3, I met my long lost twin. Or so I thought, anyway. The boy I met wasn’t actually my twin by blood. But he was my exact replica in every other aspect: from the color of our hair and eyes to the kind of jokes we liked to make and the cartoons we loved to watch and the fact that we both felt a little out of place in the big strange world. We were similar in more aspects than we could count, more than I can remember now. However, we were significantly different in one important aspect: While I was a ten year old, happy-go-lucky kid that hated going to school, he was a ten year old, happy go-lucky kid for whom school was a distant dream. You see, Andrew–the boy I thought was my twin–had a locomotor disability. He had to use a weelchair to be able to move around. However, there was only one school in our little town, and the school had no ramps or elevators, making it impossible for him to navigate by himself the five floors that it comprised. Not only this, but there were no washrooms available for him, either. His mother could not afford to lose her job in town, not with the already soaring cost of his treatement. Her meagre salary meant that a private tutor was out of question. Besides, she thought, what was the point of uprooting her entire life to move to another town or city when–according to her–there was no point in educating her child when he could not do anything with it? And so, despite the fact that he was perfectly capable of learning at par with the rest of us, Andrew never got an education. Imagine that. Imagine being unable to go to school when all the other kids around you are doing so because the school does not have a ramp. It sounds absurd, right? However strange or unreal it may sound, it’s the reality of the lives of many, many children with disabilities. It’s not that they’re unwilling to learn or their parents are unwilling to send them to school. It’s the lack of facilities–many of which the rest of us take for granted–which make it impossible for them to attend school. And even when the facilities are available. Even then, many, many children with disabilites are unable to achieve the education that is their basic right. An estimated one in three out-of-school children have a disability. There are between 93 million and 150 million children with disabilities worldwide. And yet, WHO estimates that in many, many countries across the world, having a disability more than doubles the chances of a child never attending school. While accessibility remains the key factor that inhibits children with disabilities from attending school, there are many, many other factors that come into play. Inflexible teacher training & support is another factor that comes into play. As does inflexible curriculum and poor structure and plan. However, another key factor that prevents children with disabilites from attending school has less to do with the physical elements of education, and more with the mindset and mentality of other people. That is, it has to do with the attitude of children and teachers in school towards children with disabilites. Often, children with disabilites are scorned and made fun of by their peers. And this is not limited to students alone. The teachers, too, might share a callous attitiude and be inflexible in their approach. I had a teacher in my school who refused to change her ‘ alphabetical seating plan’ to allow a deaf girl sit in the first bench so that she could lip-read her instructions. What this means is that many times, the children themseleves might not be willing to go to school from the fear of how their peers and teachers might react to or treat them. While delivering speeches about making education accessible to all or how it is the fundamental right of every person, we tend to make grand statements and all the big steps that we need to–or should–take in order to actually make education more accessible to people. And yet, while making all those grandoise proclamations, we often overlook the little steps that each and every single one of us needs to take. In seeing the ‘big picture’, we ignore the all the little snapshots that go into making it. And yet, it is this little things that make the most difference. A missing ramp–that’s all it took to make a child miss out on his dream of going to school. I don’t think any words sum up my words better than something Annie Campbell said: “We can teach our children to flap their wings, but conditions have to be just right for them to fly.” Our children are ready to take the leap and fly. Now it is upon us to determine what the sky will be like: full or rain or brimming with sunshine.

Public speaking tips for students aim to reduce anxiety that can interfere with giving presentations or speeches in class. These tips can also be helpful for those with social anxiety disorder (SAD)   who have difficulty speaking in front of a group or telling a story among friends.

Public Speaking Tips

If you have SAD and need to give a speech  in elementary school, high school, college, or university, it helps to be as prepared as possible . Beyond preparation, however, there are strategies that you can use to reduce anxiety and fight the urge to stay home with a fake illness.

Even great speakers practice their speeches beforehand. Practice out loud with a recording device or video camera and then watch yourself to see how you can improve. If you are feeling brave, practice in front of a friend or family member and ask for feedback.

• Talk about what you know : If possible, choose a topic for your speech or presentation that you know a lot about and love. Your passion for the topic will be felt by the audience, and you will feel less anxious knowing that you have a lot of experience to draw from when other students ask you questions.
• Concentrate on your message : When you focus on the task at hand, anxiety is less likely to get out of control. Concentrate on the main message of your speech or presentation and make it your goal to deliver that message to the other students in your class.
• Grab the audience's attention : Most of your fellow classmates will pay attention for at least the first 20 seconds; grab their attention during those early moments. Start with an interesting fact or a story that relates to your topic.
• Have one main message : Focus on one central theme and your classmates will learn more. Tie different parts of your talk to the main theme to support your overall message. Trying to cover too much ground can leave other students feeling overwhelmed.

Tell Stories

Stories catch the attention of other students and deliver a message in a more meaningful way than facts and figures. Whenever possible, use a story to illustrate a point in your talk.

Being prepared to speak in public can also be important if you have social anxiety disorder. Feeling confident and prepared to give your speech may help lessen your feelings of anxiety. Some of the things that you can do to prepare include:

• Visit the room : If you have access to the classroom where you will be speaking outside of class hours, take the time to visit in advance and get used to standing at the front of the room. Make arrangements for any audio-visual equipment and practice standing in the exact spot where you will deliver your speech.
• Rack up experience : Volunteer to speak in front of your class as often as possible. Be the first one to raise your hand when a question is asked. Your confidence will grow with every public speaking experience.
• Observe other speakers : Take the time to watch other speakers who are good at what they do. Practice imitating their style and confidence.
• Organize your talk : Every speech should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Structure your talk so that the other students know what to expect.

Manage Your Anxiety

Taking steps to deal with your feelings of anxiety can also make public speaking easier. Some of the things that you can do:

• Tell someone about your anxiety : If you are speaking in front of a high school or college class, meet with your teacher or professor and describe your public speaking fears . If you're in elementary or high school, share your fears with your parents, a teacher, or a guidance counselor. Sometimes sharing how you feel can make it easier to overcome stage fright.
• Visualize confidence : Visualize yourself confidently delivering your speech. Imagine feeling free of anxiety and engaging the students in your class. Although this may seem like a stretch for you now, visualization is a powerful tool for changing the way that you feel. Elite athletes use this strategy to improve performance in competitions.
• Find a friendly face : If you are feeling anxious, find one of your friends in class (or someone who seems friendly) and imagine that you are speaking only to that person.

Maintain Perspective

Remember that other students are on your side. Think about a time when you have been an audience member and the student delivering the speech or presentation was noticeably nervous. Did you think less of that student? More likely, you felt sympathetic and wanted to make that person more comfortable by smiling or nodding.

Remember—other students generally want you to succeed and feel comfortable. If for some reason the audience is not on your side or you experience bullying or social exclusion, be sure to discuss this with a parent, teacher, or guidance counselor.

Be Confident

Sometimes just knowing what makes a good speech can help you feel more confident. Focus on some of the following elements and practice them before you have to speak in public.

• Develop your own style : In addition to imitating good speakers, work on developing your own personal style as a public speaker. Integrate your own personality into your speaking style and you will feel more comfortable in front of the class. Telling personal stories that tie into your theme are a great way to let other students get to know you better.
• Avoid filler words : Words such as "basically", "well", and "um" don't add anything to your speech. Practice being silent when you feel the urge to use one of these words.
• Vary your tone, volume, and speed : Interesting speakers vary the pitch (high versus low), volume (loud versus soft), and speed (fast versus slow) of their words. Doing so keeps your classmates interested and engaged in what you say.
• Make the audience laugh : Laughter is a great way to relax both you and the other students in your class, and telling jokes can be a great icebreaker at the beginning of a speech. Practice the timing and delivery of your jokes beforehand and ask a friend for feedback. Be sure that they are appropriate for your class before you begin.
• Smile : If all else fails, smile. Your fellow classmates will perceive you like a warm speaker and be more receptive to what you have to say.

Don't Apologize

If you make a mistake, don't offer apologies. Chances are that your classmates didn't notice anyway. Unless you need to correct a fact or figure, there is no point dwelling on errors that probably only you noticed.

If you make a mistake because your hands or shaking, or something similar, try to make light of the situation by saying something like, "I wasn't this nervous when I woke up this morning!" This can help to break the tension of the moment.

It's natural to feel frightened the first time you have to speak in front of your class. However, if you fear continues, interferes with your daily life and keeps you awake at night, it may be helpful to see someone about your anxiety.

It’s a very special day today as our very own Dear School has completed 12 years successfully. It fills me with immense pride to be a student of this school and it goes without saying that I have been imbibed a lot for a simple reason that my teachers have been so fabulous. My school has not only helped me excel in studies, but also in honing my skills for other co-curricular activities to an extent where we can confidently compete with other schools and bring accolades home.

It’s not even like our second home, but our first home where we spent more than half of our day, study, eat, enjoy, discuss, debate and do every possible thing which should be done for grooming ourselves and for intellectual growth.

You all will agree to the fact that school plays an extremely important role in our lives as it lays the foundation of education in our early years and over a period of 12 years we become confident and mature to face the world out there and give wings to our dreams. If a child is not properly schooled in his or her early years then it severely impacts his/her intellectual growth. And I can proudly say that I have been really very fortunate that I could be a part of this school which has taught me a lot over a period of given years.

I couldn’t have asked for more. Since this opportunity is not going to come back, I would want to extend special thanks to our honorable Principal ma’am for steadily working towards the betterment of our School and leaving no stone unturned in the welfare of the students. I have no grievances because I sincerely believe that we have been given great exposure here and we are not only imparted knowledge through the medium of books, but are also given practical learning sessions so that we gain a better understanding of things and relate it with the real life incidents.

Then from time to time inter-school, zonal and state level competitions are organized so that it not only gives us a great sense of confidence to face the world, but also to learn from both our success and failures. Our school has instilled in us enough confidence to be able to bring glory to our school on the basis of knowledge learning exercise that takes place in our classrooms.

Sometimes I wonder where you all get this patience from for handling so many mischievous students like us yet the entire thing seems so effortless on your part. It feels as if our teachers are especially gifted by God with such qualities as endurance, compassion and a great sense of reading the mind of their students. The best part is that our teachers have never thrashed us but have acted wisely by making us reflect on our actions so that we can correct our wrongs.

Our school has a great culture and environment for learning and cohesive development of a child. We have phenomenal teachers who take much pain for us in transmitting knowledge to us and handling our queries. In fact, whenever we face any crisis in our personal lives, we can without any hesitation approach our class teacher and get the required guidance and support. Our teachers are not just our teachers but our guides and mentors who act as torch bearers for us. We are so fortunate to have such teachers who stand by us all the time and put efforts persistently towards making us responsible human beings. Right from learning to read, write and analyze, we are taught everything so much so that we are modeled into hardworking and dedicated students.

For many, school life is a preparatory stage that helps prepare us for the later stages in life, but that learning stays with us for our lifetime. So through the medium of speech I would like to send across a message to all the parents to send their child to a good school and never undermine its importance.

As this concern has been raised by many of our NGO members, we considered it important to bring up this issue in our present meeting and chart out some plans for their education and betterment. And since we are discussing about the important role of school, I would also like to share an experience from my personal life, which is that of my school and in what ways it contributed towards the holistic development of my being.

As a person who has spent more than half of his life remaining a student, I can confidently vouch for the important role that a school plays. I cannot underestimate the importance of school because if it were not the schools then children’s intellectual and mental growth in their early years would have remained stunted.

In schools, we not only gain knowledge from the books but also learn things practically that helps in the overall growth of a student, for instance, we are taught the importance of discipline and time management in our school which is a valuable lesson which we never let slip off from us because we know what repercussions may follow after that. Similarly, we have learnt other important lessons too which we follow in our lives till the end. So we can very well understand the plight of such students who don’t go to school at all and needless to mention our nation is laying waste their precious talent.

But as a responsible citizen of our country, it becomes our civic duty to educate the children of our Nation and send them to school and educate them. Though they can be taught at home, but school environment is something else and nothing can replace it. School plays a number of key roles; out of which the chief aim is that of educating children of course and making them understand the significance of teamwork and team spirit, which is very crucial for them to know because when they grow up and are directed to their workplaces, they have the requisite ability to become a productive part of their society. In schools, students of course are provided with new ideas and are helped in developing their critical thinking through the medium of Science and Literature and are given a great exposure to unravel the geographical, cultural and historical world.

Hello All – Welcome to the 25 th anniversary of our school. It gives me immense pleasure to announce the successful completion of 25 years of our school.

It was a decade before that I joined this school as one of the faculty members and now I feel extremely glad to be its part. Imbibing knowledge from new subjects and developing proficiency in a skill can help in the exponential growth of a student or a child. Whether a student is interested in Arts, Science, or Commerce, the school, with the assistance of its administrators and, most importantly, teachers, provides its students with a favorable environment for studying and personal growth

Schools also give the feeling of a sense of community to its students where children from different strata of society come, meet and interact. In fact, in my early years as a student, I used to detest the idea of attending school but as I grew up I realized the importance of a school and the conducive environment that it provides for multiple activities for the students to take place and which has helped shape and nourish my personality otherwise I wouldn’t have been the person that I am today.

SOCIALIZATION

As human beings are social animals, we cannot survive in isolation. Therefore, even schools are a great place for socialization. In schools, we interact with students from different social as well as cultural backgrounds which further help in broadening our horizon.

In school we not only make friends, but also learn the spirit of teamwork through different activities. The school environment offers students ample opportunities to adapt to team dynamics, a crucial skill necessary for success in the real world..

PREPARATION

In schools children not only learn letters and numbers, facts and figures, but are actually prepared to face the world out there once they leave school. So schools immensely contribute in the overall growth of a student and therefore we should never underestimate its importance, but encourage more and more children for attending the school.

Parents of school shooter sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison. Here's what happened in court today

The  parents of the teenager who killed four students  in the 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, were each sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison Tuesday, weeks after being convicted of manslaughter.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, who each had faced up to 15 years in prison, have already been imprisoned for more than two years since their arrest in a Detroit warehouse days after the shooting. Though they were tried separately, their sentencing took place together in an Oakland County courtroom.

They are the first parents to be held criminally responsible for a mass school shooting committed by their child as the nation continues to grapple with the scourge of gunfire on campus and mass shootings.

Here's what everyone said in court today:

• Several family members of the four students killed in the shooting delivered emotional victim impact statements before the judge handed down the sentencing. The mother of Justin Shilling said "the ripple effects of both James and Jennifer's failures to act" to prevent their son from carrying out the deadly shooting " have devastated us all ." The father of Hana St. Juliana said the Crumbleys continue to deflect blame , adding his daughter's death "destroyed a large portion of my very soul."
• Jennifer Crumbley began her statement to the court on Tuesday by expressing her condolences to the victims and their families. She also said a previous statement that she made on the stand in her own defense  during her trial in Februar y was "completely misunderstood." Jennifer Crumbley previously said, “I’ve asked myself if I would have done anything differently, and I wouldn’t have.” Now, before sentencing, she said if she knew her son was capable of the crimes committed, her answer would have "absolutely been different."
• James Crumbley apologized to the victims , something he said he had not been able to do yet. He said he was not aware his son was planning a school shooting, and he asked the judge, "sentence me in a fair way."
• Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald urged the judge to exceed the sentencing guidelines for the Crumbleys and to consider the "devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable." In separate pre-sentencing memos, the attorneys for the parents asked for them  to be sentenced  to less than five years in prison.
• Judge Cheryl Matthews said the decision should be a deterrent to try to stop school shootings in the future. She pointed to James and Jennifer Crumbley's lack of action, saying, “These convictions confirm repeated acts or lack of acts that could have halted an oncoming runaway train."

Crumbley case sets a precedent on who can be held accountable for a mass shooting

The historic trials, and stunning verdicts, of James and Jennifer Crumbley  tested the limits of who can be held responsible for a mass shooting.

The prosecution of both parents, and an uptick in other criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits tied to mass shootings, indicates attorneys are increasingly seeking to hold responsible people — and companies — who didn’t pull the trigger .

Prosecutors over the past few years have been slowly, but steadily, expanding the notion of who can be held accountable for a mass shooting, CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig, a former federal and state prosecutor, said last month.

While he cautioned each case rests on its own merits, "we’ve seen groundbreaking prosecutions of parents and security personnel," he said, "and I’d expect that trend to continue."

The question remains whether prosecution of non-shooters will be effective in reducing the number of mass shootings in the United States. But undoubtedly, it has expanded prosecutors’ tool boxes, according to Ekow Yankah, law professor at the University of Michigan.

“It gives different prosecutors something to aim at – it gives them a new theory, it gives them something to try,” he told CNN. “It gives prosecutors who are frustrated, are facing a devastating crime, a mass shooting that’s hurt their community, some set of actions that they can take.”

Prosecutor says she is disappointed James and Jennifer Crumbley did not express remorse

The lead prosecutor in James and Jennifer Crumbley's criminal trials said it was "disappointing" that the parents didn't express remorse.

"Feeling bad is natural, and we don't dispute that they feel bad ... that's not what's important to victims of crime," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said to reporters after the Crumbleys' sentencing Tuesday. "What they want and need most of all is remorse, which means acknowledgment of the wrongdoing and some sort of reconciliation or apology for that — and that didn't come."

The prosecutor said she didn't think that the case would set a precedent for parents of other school shooters.

"There's a difference between precedent-setting and rare, and this is really a rare set of facts, it really is," McDonald said. 

"Most of us know that you have to exercise reasonable care at least to prevent other people from the dangers that you know are foreseeable," she added.

She said her team did the "absolute best" they could, and the victim's families know that.

"It's really hard ... to remark about how hard we work and how hard it's been when you're looking in the eyes of these parents every day, who get up in unbelievable pain and grief and see this play out every day and they still go on," she said. "And so, my focus is there."

The judge presiding over the sentencing of James and Jennifer Crumbley said the decision should be a deterrent to try to stop school shootings in the future.

"Opportunity knocked over and over again, louder and louder, and was ignored," Judge Cheryl Matthews said. "No one answered and these two people should have and sure didn’t."

She said she is "aware of my job in this situation” and promised not to be “swayed by public opinion” when handing down the sentencing decision.

Talking to the families in the courtroom, Matthews said she could never understand the pain they are experiencing, but reassured them, “I saw what you saw and I heard what you heard” during the trials.

Prosecutor urges judge to consider the "devastating impact" of the Crumbleys' "gross negligence"

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald urged Judge Cheryl Matthews to exceed the sentencing guidelines for James and Jennifer Crumbley, asking the judge to consider the "devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable."

"I want to be clear, remorse does not sound like, 'I feel really bad.' I'm sure they do. I don't dispute they feel bad, I don't dispute they have grief. That's not the kind of remorse and accountability these victims are looking for," McDonald said in court Tuesday.

She continued, addressing the judge:

"When fashioning a sentence, it is absolutely critical that you listen and consider the impact of what that gross negligence caused. So we're asking you to exceed the guidelines because I believe all of the factors pursuant to the case law, with the necessary consideration of the impact of these crimes, justifies you to do. We're asking you, the people are asking you, to consider the devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable."

James Crumbley apologizes to the families of his son's victims

James Crumbley, the father of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley, addressed the courtroom, opening his statement by apologizing to the victims, something he said he had not been able to do yet.

"I want to say I can't imagine the pain and agony ... for the families that have lost their children and what they are experiencing and what they are going through. As a parent, our biggest fear is losing our child or our children, and to lose a child is unimaginable. My heart is really broken for everybody involved," he said.

"I really want the families of Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St Juliana, Tate Myre and Justin Shilling to know how truly sorry I am, and how devastated I was when I heard what happened to them," Crumbley said.

Crumbley added that he was not aware his son was planning a school shooting, and he asked Judge Cheryl Matthews to "sentence me in a fair way."

Jennifer Crumbley says previous statement made in court was misinterpreted

Jennifer Crumbley began her statement to the court by expressing her condolences to the victims and their families.

"I sit here today to express my deepest sorrows for the families of Hana, Tate, Madisyn, Justin and to all those affected on November 30, 2021," she said.

Crumbley said that a previous statement made on the stand was "completely misunderstood."

When she took the stand in her own defense during her trial in Februar y, she had said, “I’ve asked myself if I would have done anything differently, and I wouldn’t have.”

On Tuesday, Crumbley said that she did not foresee the actions of her son and therefore would not have done anything different, and that is how she interpreted the question.

"With the benefit of hindsight and information I have now, my answer would be drastically different," she said.

Crumbley added that if she knew her son was capable of the crimes committed, her answer would have "absolutely been different."

 Father of Hana St. Juliana says Crumbleys "choose to blame everyone but themselves"

James and Jennifer Crumbley continue to deflect blame, the father of a victim of the 2021 Oxford High School shooting said at the Crumbleys' sentencing Tuesday.

"The defendants, through their choices, through their indifference and gross negligence, enabled their son to murder my daughter Hana and three other children," Steve St. Juliana, the father of Hana St. Juliana, said in a victim impact statement Tuesday.

"I will never think back fondly on her high school and college graduations. I will never walk her down the aisle as she begins the journey of starting her own family. I am forever denied the chance to hold her or her future children in my arms," he added.

St. Juliana said his position on the Crumbleys' sentencing evolved throughout the trial as the defendants' "defiance" increased. "Hana, Madisyn, Tate, and Justin are the ones who have lost everything — not the defendants," he said before requesting the parents receive the maximum possible sentence.

Buck Myre, the father of victim Tate Myre, gave his impact statement following Steve St. Juliana. He was the last person to give an impact statement.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) stunned attendees at a high school solar eclipse event Monday by claiming the rock-solid moon is a “planet” that is “made up mostly of gases” — before adding she still wants to be “first in line” to learn how to live there.

The former top Democrat on the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee badly botched elementary lunar facts while speaking during the gathering at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston.

“You’ve heard the word ‘full moon.’ Sometimes you need to take the opportunity just to come out and see a full moon is that complete rounded circle, which is made up mostly of gases,” Jackson Lee, 74, told teenage pupils who gathered on a sports field ahead of the rare celestial event.

“And that’s why the question is why or how could we as humans live on the moon? Are the gases such that we could do that?” the congresswoman said.

“The sun is a mighty powerful heat, but it’s almost impossible to go near the sun. The moon is more manageable.”

Jackson Lee made a series of other questionable statements, including saying the moon, which reflects the sun’s light, gives off “unique light and energy” and misstating the scientific reason for the eclipse.

“You have the energy of the moon at night,” she told the kids.

The solar eclipse was happening because the Earth was unusually close to the moon, she said — though, in fact, the eclipse was the result of the alignment of the sun and moon.

“I don’t think we’ve been on the moon the last 50 years. So we will be landing on the moon. What you’ll see today will be the closest distance that the moon has ever been in the last 20 years. Which means that’s why they will shut the light down because they will be close to the Earth,” she said of the eclipse alignment.

“I don’t know about you, I want to be first in line to know how to live and to be able to survive on the moon,” Jackson Lee added. “That’s another planet which we’re going to see shortly.”

Jackson Lee is notorious in DC for high staff turnover because of her allegedly unusual and abusive demands of staffers.

In a statement to The Post on Tuesday, she admitted she was wrong to describe the moon, which has virtually no atmosphere, as being composed mostly of gas to the schoolkids.

“Obviously I misspoke and meant to say the sun, but as usual, Republicans are focused on stupid things instead of stuff that really matters. What can I say, though, foolish thinkers lust for stupidity!” she said of GOPers who swiftly criticized her glaring gaffes.

“They should be focusing on issues like prenatal care, building more affordable housing, and more reduction of student loan debt as President Joe Biden is,” Jackson Lee said. “Also, I care more about these children who would not have experienced the eclipse in this enthusiastic manner. And, I care more about protecting the rights of women and children than engaging in this kind of senseless dialogue!”

Jackson Lee has not deleted from her X page the footage of herself providing the miseducation to local students.

The video went viral after it was clipped and reposted by Houston-area radio host Kenny Webster.

“As a local Houston talk radio personality, she supplies us with a never-ending vault of content. She’s better than satire,” Webster told The Post.

Statement by Miguel Cardona Secretary of Education on the U.S. Department of Education Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Request

Chairman Aderholt and Ranking Member DeLauro and distinguished Members of the Committee.  I am pleased to join you today, and I am proud to testify on President Biden's fiscal year (FY) 2025 Budget Request for the Department of Education.  As an educator and a father, I know that nothing unites America's families more than the hopes we share for our children, and that is why the Biden-Harris Administration continues to push for increased investments to ensure all students have equitable access to schools, colleges, and educators that welcome and support them, inspire their love of learning, and prepare them to succeed in whichever career they choose.

The President's FY 2025 Budget continues the historic progress made since the President took office—with nearly 15 million jobs created and inflation down two-thirds—by lowering costs for working families; protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare; investing in America and the American people; and reducing the deficit by cracking down on fraud, cutting wasteful spending, and making the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share.  This is a budget that unapologetically strives to raise the bar for education in America and position our nation to lead the world for years to come.  Even in an era of relative restraint, where we currently find ourselves operating within the discretionary caps of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA), we're continuing to push for additional, critical resources that will: 1) Achieve Academic Excellence; 2) Boldly Improve Learning Conditions; 3) Create Pathways for Global Engagement; and 4) Expand Access to Higher Education by Reducing Costs for Students and Investing in Student Supports.

Department of Education Topline Request and Baseline

The discretionary request for Department of Education programs is $82.4 billion, an increase of $3.3 billion over the FY 2024 enacted level.  However, since final appropriations were not completed by the time of the budget release, the baseline for our FY 2025 request levels was the FY 2023 enacted level, and the FY 2025 request submitted does not reflect final FY 2024 appropriations action.  We look forward to working with Congress to provide technical assistance during upcoming FY 2025 appropriations action for appropriate review of the Administration's proposal, including how FY 2025 requests compare with final FY 2024 enacted levels.

Achieving Academic Excellence

Title I funding is absolutely essential to our efforts to ensure every student achieves academic excellence.  To date, and in partnership with Congress, the Biden-Harris Administration has grown Title I funding for schools supporting students from low-income backgrounds by $1.9 billion—expanding the base of this crucial funding to close opportunity and achievement gaps in our nation's schools and sustain our academic recovery from the impacts of the pandemic.  Our request, operating within the constraints of the FRA, calls for a $200 million increase in FY 2025 over FY 2023 and $180 million more than the FY 2024 level, for a total request of $18.6 billion. The Request also includes critical updates to ensure States have the resources they need to effectively administer the Title I program and ensure every student receives an excellent education.

The President and I remain committed to ensuring that children and youth with disabilities receive the services and support they need to thrive in school and graduate ready for college and career.  The Budget Request reflects that commitment through a significant boost in support for children with disabilities.  We are requesting $15.7 billion for special education programs, a more than $200 million increase above the FY 2023 enacted level and $190 million more than FY 2024 enacted.  This includes $14.4 billion for IDEA Part B Grants to States, $200 million more than FY 2023 enacted ($180 million more than FY 2024 enacted), and $425 million for Preschool Grants, $5 million more than FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted.  Our request also includes $545 million for the IDEA Part C Infants and Families program, $5 million more than FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted.  However, despite these requested increases there remains a nearly $31 billion annual gap between current funding levels and what is widely considered to be full funding of IDEA, and that is why the Administration continues to support legislation that achieves full funding over the next 10 years such as the IDEA Full Funding Act.

With the obligation deadline for the last of COVID-19 supplemental education funding in September 2024, we are proposing a new Academic Acceleration and Achievement Grants program, which would help bridge the gap between the crucial recovery work that American Rescue Plan dollars provided to sustained academic acceleration and achievement efforts in the long run.  This mandatory proposal would provide $8 billion over  years to help Title I and Title I-eligible schools—including those in an improvement status and especially hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic—to improve opportunities and outcomes for underserved students through a variety of proven, evidence-based strategies, including: increasing student attendance and engagement; providing high-quality, high-dosage tutoring; and expanding summer, extended, or afterschool learning time.

The Budget proposes a new $25 million demonstration program to incentivize school districts to expand high-quality public preschool in schools and community-based settings, including by leveraging existing federal investments like Head Start and Title I.  This new investment complements the mandatory funding proposal also included in the President's Budget (at the Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Department of Education), which would provide assistance to every State to establish and expand high-quality free preschool, through a federal-state partnership.

Boldly Improving Learning Conditions

Every student should have access to outstanding, well-prepared, well-supported educators who reflect the rich diversity of our nation.  Our budget makes significant investments in educator recruitment, preparation, retention, and professional learning, improving resources and support for America's teachers and school leaders to expand their impact within and beyond their classrooms.  This includes $2.9 billion in educator preparation, development, and leadership—an increase of nearly $100 million over FY 2023 levels and $200 million over FY 2024 levels—including $30 million in Hawkins and $95 million in Teacher Quality Partnerships to build a diverse and well-prepared teacher pipeline, and $125 million to address shortages of special education teachers and providers.  The Budget also supports an expansion of $17 million in the National Professional Development program to help shore up the pipeline of bilingual educators, as well as $5 million in graduate fellowships for faculty in high-need areas.

Improving learning conditions also means acknowledging that communities with high rates of poverty need comprehensive services to support and sustain student well-being and improved academic outcomes.  Schools are ideally situated to provide such supports, which is why I am requesting $200 million to expand Full-Service Community Schools, an increase of $50 million over FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted levels, to meet increasing demand for the program.  I am requesting a total of $216 million for School Safety National Activities, which will provide $40 million in new funding to meet the mental health needs of our students, school staff, and teachers and build on the Administration's historic progress in increasing the number of school counselors, school psychologists, social workers, and other health professionals serving our students within schools.  Already, the Department has obligated $571 million in mental health programs for K-12 schools, enabled through partnership with Congress on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—helping accelerate our nation towards the President's ambitious goal of doubling the number of mental health professionals in our nation's schools.  Our budget also includes a new $25 million investment in the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) to help colleges and universities develop campus-wide strategies and improve institutional and systemwide capacity to address student mental health needs and other non-academic barriers to student success, including hiring additional providers on their campuses.

Creating Pathways for Global Engagement

I strongly believe that being bilingual is a superpower.  It is why we are requesting $940 million for English Language Acquisition grants, an increase of $50 million over FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted.  This increase would not only strengthen capacity for schools to meet the needs of English Learners and their teachers, it would also provide $75 million to build multilingual teacher pipelines and provide professional development in multilingual education and $5 million for postsecondary education fellowships to include the quality of multilingual teacher preparation and preparation in other critical educator shortage areas.

To further prepare our students for global success, our high schools should evolve to meet the career and college demands of today and tomorrow. Reimagining traditional educational pathways is a critical piece of the President's vision to increase successful outcomes for all students and help them compete internationally.  Accordingly, our budget request includes $1.5 billion for Career and Technical Education (CTE) state grants, an increase of $40 million above FY 2023 enacted and $30 million above FY 2024 enacted, to invest in workforce development and build the capacity of existing CTE programs.  We are also requesting $64.4 million for CTE National Programs (an increase of $32 million over FY 2023 enacted and $52 million over FY 2024 enacted), which includes a $57 million investment in the Career Connected High Schools program to redesign our high schools to build career and college pathways and align with our postsecondary education system.  This program will provide competitive grants to partnerships among school districts, institutions of higher education (including community colleges), and employers.  Key activities would include dual enrollment, work-based learning, career-related credentials, career-navigation support, and educator development to support effective integration of academic and career-connected instruction across grades 11–14.  Further, our request includes $12 billion in mandatory funding over 10 years for the new Reducing the Costs of College Fund—and this proposal includes over $7 billion in the Classroom to Career program, which reduces costs for students by providing funds to States to expand student access to free, career-connected dual enrollment programs.

Making Postsecondary Education Inclusive and Affordable

Most well-paying jobs today require some education beyond high school. But as college costs continue to rise, too many students and families are finding it harder to afford that path.  And despite all the progress we have made, we still face serious gaps in college completion and attainment based on race and income.  Our budget request invests in postsecondary success for all students, improving college affordability, retention, and completion.

To expand equitable and affordable access to an education beyond high school, the Budget proposes to increase the maximum Pell Grant by $100 for the 2025-2026 award year building on successful efforts to raise the discretionary maximum award by $900 since the beginning of the Biden-Harris Administration.  The Budget also increases the mandatory Pell add-on by $650 for a total maximum award of $8,145 for students attending public and non-profit institutions.  This increase keeps the Administration on its path to double the maximum Pell Grant at such institutions by 2029.  The Administration continues to support expanding all federal student aid to students who are Dreamers—and we are committed to working with Congress to advance this goal.

The Budget also proposes to create partnerships between the federal government and States to make two years of community college free for first-time students and workers wanting to reskill.  The Budget proposes mandatory funding for two years of subsidized tuition up to $4,500 per year for students from families earning less than $125,000 enrolled in an eligible four-year Historically Black College or University (HBCU), Tribally Controlled College or University (TCCU), or Minority Serving Institution (MSI).

In addition to the aforementioned Classroom to Career program, the Reducing the Costs of College Fund proposal includes $5 billion for awards to colleges and universities that: 1) provide an excellent education at an affordable price to expand the number of students served and to share best practices, and 2) scale evidence-based strategies that increase college completion rates, reduce cost burdens for students, and lower costs per graduate.

The Budget also builds on President Biden's historic actions to reduce student debt and college costs by eliminating origination fees charged to borrowers on every new federal student loan.

In addition to improving college affordability, it is critical to help students obtain the resources they need to persist in and complete a postsecondary education.  The Budget supports innovative and promising strategies to improve student success and degree completion, including:

• Enhancing institutional capacity at HBCUs, TCCUs, MSIs, and low-resourced institutions, including at community colleges, by requesting $1.3 billion in institutional support under Titles III and V of the Higher Education Act.  Additionally, the Request includes a $100 million initiative in the FIPSE program to expand research and development infrastructure at four-year HBCUs, TCCUs, and MSIs.
• $100 million for the Postsecondary Student Success Grant Program, which provides competitive grants to States, nonprofits, institutions of higher education (IHEs), and systems of IHEs to implement, expand, and evaluate evidence-based, data driven completion and success strategies to improve student outcomes.
• $80 million to colleges and universities providing affordable childcare for low-income student parents, a $5 million increase over FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted levels to the Child Care Access Means Parents in School Program, or CCAMPIS. 
• Increased funding for Federal TRIO programs and GEAR UP, $20 million and $10 million, respectively, above FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted levels to expand services that promote access and completion in postsecondary education for underserved individuals. 
• $15 million to support a new Statewide Reform Grants program that awards grants to States and state higher education governing, policy, and coordinating entities to implement statewide improvements and reforms to the entire spectrum of postsecondary education—from access to career outcomes and student success.
• $10 million to support a new Postsecondary Advancement and Success Technical Assistance Center to improve access to equitable college inclusion, completion, and retention opportunities.
• $12 million for the Open Textbooks Pilot to create new open textbooks and expand their use, in alignment with the Administration's goal of lowering the cost of college and eliminating unnecessary junk fees.

The Budget will improve the services we provide students and families to help them pay for college through an essential investment in Student Aid Administration.  With limited resources, this Administration has been engaged on multiple fronts to improve the student aid experience, including on actions that are Congressionally directed. Some of these efforts include implementing an entirely new student aid formula, revamping a 40-year-old student aid application system, navigating a successful return to repayment from the pandemic-driven payment pause, and overhauling a broken student loan servicing system.  We are requesting $2.7 billion to administer the Federal student aid programs in FY 2025, an increase of $625 million and $600 million, respectively, over FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted, to support students and student loan borrowers as they navigate these modernized financial aid application and student loan repayment processes.  The increase will allow the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) to effectively operate the student aid programs, and additionally protect against cybersecurity breaches to ensure protection of borrowers' personal information, implement critical improvements to student loan servicing, continue to modernize its digital infrastructure, and ensure successful administration of the financial aid programs through a simplified application process for students and borrowers.

Education Research, Assessment, and Statistics

Education research and data are important because high-quality information about effective practices and trends in student achievement can help improve teaching and learning, student outcomes, and the return on the public investment in education at the Federal, State, and local levels.  Our Budget requests $816 million for the Institute of Education Sciences, an $8 million increase above the FY 2023 enacted level and $22 million above the FY 2024 enacted level, to conduct, provide and share research and scientific evidence in education.

Enforcement of Civil Rights Laws

Finally, we prioritize efforts to enforce the Nation's civil rights laws, as they relate to education, by providing $162 for the Office for Civil Rights, a $22 million increase above FY 2023 and FY 2024 enacted.  The increase would be primarily used to expand staffing capacity to address a complaint workload that has tripled since 2009 and has included alarming reports of rising Antisemitism and anti-Arab discrimination in our Nation's schools and college campuses.

Closing Remarks

I want to thank the Committee for inviting me to discuss the President's FY 2025 Budget for the Department of Education.  I have often said that a budget is a statement of values.  As you review and consider our budget request, I hope you see how committed President Biden and I are to boldly raising the bar in education—to transform our education system to better serve the needs of all students.  Our Budget is dedicated to achieving that goal.  Our children and our country deserve it.  Thank you, and I will do my best to respond to any questions you may have.

But Foundation Day is not just about looking back. It’s about looking forward too. We think about how we can make our school even better. We think about the future. We dream big, just like the founders did.

PONTIAC, Mich. — The first parents to ever be charged , then convicted, in their child’s mass shooting at a U.S. school were both sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison after they faced the victims' families at a sentencing hearing in a Michigan courtroom.

James Crumbley, 47, and his wife, Jennifer, 46, were sentenced one after another by Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Matthews as they appeared together for the first time since they attended joint hearings before their landmark trials were separated last fall. Their son, Ethan, now 17, pleaded guilty as an adult to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School in suburban Detroit and was sentenced to life in prison.

Matthews' sentencing decision was in line with what Oakland County prosecutors had asked for after both parents were found guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the students their son killed.

Matthews told the Crumbleys that the jury convictions were "not about poor parenting" but about how they repeatedly ignored warning signs that a "reasonable person" would have seen.

"These convictions confirm repeated acts that could have halted an oncoming runaway train," she said.

The couple will get credit for time served in an Oakland County jail since their arrests in the wake of the shooting on Nov. 30, 2021. The pair sat apart at the defense table with their lawyers beside them as the families of the four students who were killed asked before sentencing for the maximum terms to be imposed.

"When you texted, 'Ethan don't do it,'  I was texting, 'Madisyn I love you, please call mom,'" Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of shooting victim Madisyn Baldwin, 17, told the Crumbleys. "When you found out about the lives your son took that day, I was still waiting for my daughter in the parking lot.

"The lack of compassion you've shown is outright disgusting," she added through tears.

Jill Soave, the mother of another slain student, Justin Shilling, 17, said the parents' inaction on the day of the shooting "failed their son and failed us all."

Justin's father, Craig Shilling, said he was troubled by Jennifer Crumbley's testimony during her trial in which she said she would not have done anything differently, even today.

"The blood of our children is on your hands, too," Craig Shilling said.

James Crumbley wore an orange jumpsuit and headphones to help with his hearing, and Jennifer Crumbley wore a gray-and-white jumpsuit. He did not look at his wife, while she glanced in his direction.

In Michigan, prosecutors said, felonies that rise out of the same event must run concurrently, so the most Matthews could have imposed is 15 years in total. And while prosecutors wanted the parents to receive sentences that exceeded the advisory guideline range, Matthews had the ultimate discretion, weighing factors such as past criminal behavior and the circumstances of their crimes.

Before she was sentenced, Jennifer Crumbley told the court that she felt "deep remorse, regret and grief" about the shooting, but she also deflected some of the blame onto school officials and took offense to the prosecution's strategy portraying her as a neglectful mother .

"We were good parents," Crumbley said. "We were the average family. We weren't perfect, but we loved our son and each other tremendously."

James Crumbley also addressed the court, explaining to the judge that he did not know beforehand about his son's planned attack on his school and telling the victims' families directly that he would have acted differently on the day of the shooting.

"Please note that I am truly sorry for your loss as a result of what my son did," he said. "I cannot express how much I wish I had known what was going on with him or what was going to happen."

Matthews said during Tuesday's sentencing that the family would not be housed together and that the state Corrections Department has indicated James and Ethan Crumbley specifically will not be in the same facility given their relationship. Ethan is being held in a state prison 17 miles from Oxford High School. Jennifer Crumbley would be sent to the state's only women's prison.

James and Jennifer Crumbley have not been able to communicate as part of a no contact order since their arrests.

In both parents' cases, prosecutors wrote that their "gross negligence changed an entire community forever."

They both could have prevented the shooting with "tragically simple actions," prosecutors wrote, adding that they "failed to take any action when presented with the gravest of dangers."

Legal experts had suggested James Crumbley could have faced a harsher sentence than his wife after prosecutors said he made threats in jail.

During his trial, Matthews restricted his communication to only his lawyer and clergy.

The sentencing memo for James Crumbley referred to allegations that he made threats against the prosecutor and said that "his jail calls show a total lack of remorse" and that "he blames everyone but himself."

The memo details the expletive-ridden threats he is alleged to have directly addressed to the prosecutor on multiple recorded jail calls. In one call before the trial, he said, "Karen McDonald, you're going down," according to prosecutors. In other calls, he threatened retribution, they said.

James Crumbley’s lawyer, Mariell Lehman, wrote in court documents that the calls did not include threats to physically harm the prosecutor but that he expressed his desire to ensure that McDonald is not able to continue practicing law as a result of her actions in the case.

"It is clear Mr. Crumbley is venting to loved ones about his frustrations related to the lack of investigation done by the prosecution prior to authorizing charges," Lehman wrote, saying her client is understandably angry at his situation.

The prosecution's memo also says James Crumbley asserted his innocence in a pre-sentence report, indicating a lack of remorse.

"I feel horrible for what happened and would do anything to be able to go back in time and change it! But I can't. And I had nothing to do with what happened," he wrote, according to the prosecution memo. "I don't know why my son did what he did. HE is the only one who knows."

Lehman has not said whether she plans to appeal James Crumbley's verdict, while a lawyer for Jennifer Crumbley, Shannon Smith, has written that she will.

Two separate trials

James Crumbley did not take the stand during his trial. His wife testified that she placed the responsibility of securing the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun used in the shooting on her husband.

Asked whether she would have done anything differently, Jennifer Crumbley told jurors, "I don't think I'm a failure as a parent."

Prosecutors argued that she knew of her son's deteriorating mental health and social isolation and that he had access to a gun but that she cared more about her hobbies and carrying on an extramarital affair than about being present at home.

Her defense lawyer attempted to portray her as a caring mother, albeit one who did not know her son was capable of such violence — suggesting instead that his school failed to fully inform her of his troubles and that her husband was responsible for the weapon.

Smith continued to defend her client in her sentencing memo.

"Criticizing Mrs. Crumbley for being 'rarely home' is a sexist and misogynistic attack on a mother," Smith wrote.

In a pre-sentence report, Jennifer Crumbley said she has the hindsight now to know she would have handled things differently.

"With the information I have now, of course my answer would be hugely different," she said. "There are so many things that I would change if I could go back in time."

Both her and her husband's trials centered on the day of the shooting.

A day after Thanksgiving, prosecutors said, James Crumbley bought their son the handgun, while Jennifer Crumbley took him to a gun range that weekend.

On Tuesday, a teacher said she had found a note on Ethan's desk with a drawing of a gun and a person who had been shot, along with messages including: "The thoughts won't stop. Help me."

That discovery prompted the school to summon the parents for a meeting, but school officials testified that they declined to bring him home because they had to go back to work.

The officials also said that if the parents had informed them that their son had access to a gun, they would have been more authoritative to ensure immediate safety.

Ethan would go on to commit the school shooting later that afternoon, killing Baldwin; Shilling; Tate Myre, 16; and Hana St. Juliana, 14.

Victims' families want accountability

In the aftermath of the trials, the victims' families have demanded further accountability. They are seeking changes to governmental immunity laws that protect schools from being sued and want to see a requirement for independent reviews after any mass shooting.

Oakland County prosecutors have said they do not plan to charge anyone else in connection with the massacre.

Buck Myre, the father of Tate Myre, said during Tuesday's sentencing that families still want a government-led investigation.

"It's time to drive real change from this tragedy," he told the judge.

Later, James Crumbley stood and addressed Buck Myre directly when he was given the chance to speak.

"It is time that we all know the truth," he said. "I, too, want the truth, because you have not had it."

My son was censored for speech calling out American hypocrisy. Rude school board muted me.

Reynoldsburg resident Millard Dealow Morgan is the father of two Licking Heights High School students, 12th grader Millard Dealow Morgan II and Johnny Duyan Morgan, an 11th grader. They have attended school in Pataskala since kindergarten.

Licking Heights High School sits on the border of Franklin and Licking counties and is a unique school being that it is in a predominately white and conservative county but has a 50% non-white student population.

Although, the school is truly a melting pot, issues my sons and other students of color have experienced is a result of the lack of diversity among the school’s administrators, educators, and non-teaching staff. 

A staff enriched with ethnicity and culture, can serve as an intercessory voice for students who are made to feel marginalized and voiceless.

Despite the administration lacking resemblance to their diverse student population, I will acknowledge Licking Heights HS for creating Diaspora , a cultural program, for West African, East African, Indian, Asian, and West Indian students from rich cultures and backgrounds to share and display their love for their homeland. 

My son was silenced

As part of the March 1 Diaspora program, Millard filmed a documentary where he talked about the program and the logistics to ensure it was a success. 

In the documentary, students wrote and read original speeches and poems, performed traditional dances from their countries and modeled in a fashion show displaying to the audience, beauty in their custom clothing.

Millard wrote an original speech which was initially reviewed and approved approximately 30 days prior to the program by a member of the teaching staff.

The night before the program, an administrator asked Millard to edit his speech because the administrator believed the content was too strong and might be viewed as offensive by others.

Of course, he was reluctant to make changes on a previously approved speech.  He felt if it was good enough a month ago, then it should have been good enough on the day of the program. I agreed with my son and scheduled a meeting to speak with the school’s administration.

Once Millard’s fellow students discovered he was being silenced by not being able to read his previously approved speech, they expressed their discourse and were ready to help in any way they could. My son and I encouraged them to complete their performances.

During a telephone meeting with Licking Heights administration, I explained that young adults should be encouraged to remain active and vocal and never silenced or restricted from sharing how they truly feel about issues affecting their school, communities, and the world. 

My son and I were dissatisfied with the outcome of the meeting and decided to try a different route. 

March 11, Millard, Malcom Cash, an Ohio State professor and my son's mentor, and I attended a school board meeting.

The school board was rude and dismissive

Although it was a special meeting, it was opened to the public. The board allowed my son to speak but muted his mentor and I. 

We were told we could not speak and would need to attend a future meeting. 

I explained that if allowed to speak, we would adhere to the three-minute time limit outlined on their website.

I further explained that neither Millard or I would be able to attend the next meeting because it fell on Election Day.

 I informed the board that my place of employment would be used as a polling place and that I would not be able to leave until polls were closed and that Millard would perform his community service hours at the polls also on that date.   

The board displayed very little concern or care and denied us the ability to speak.   

This was and remains highly disturbing as the website states, “all meetings are open to the public” and there is a three-minute time limit to speak. The website did not state that citizens can’t speak during special work session meetings.  Their denial would not allow us another chance to speak until the latter part of April. 

We all felt the board’s behavior was extremely rude and dismissive.  As a board in the Columbus area, their displayed behavior can be best described as repulsive. 

Our view: Actually, no, the Chinese Communist Party hasn’t invaded Pataskala. But xenophobia has.

My son and his classmates initiated communication with administrators in hopes of having some light shed on the school’s wrongdoings as it pertains to non-white students who feel they are voiceless and are placed in a box.  

Never let our youth be silenced!

Millard Dealow Morgan II's Diaspora Speech

In America we like to say we wouldn’t sit back. We wouldn’t watch the crimes of the past.

We’d protest, rally behind those who are hurt and speak for those who can’t speak for themselves.

But yet we see such little of that today. The empathy, the emotions, the feeling of walking in someone else’s shoes.

Where did that go?

I’m not mad, or sad or even annoyed but confused. I question you for the apathy you have for genocides and mass murder when the internet makes it so easy to see. How can you be so blind in a time of such need?

The hypocrisy that comes out of your mouth as you speak out against issues in Palestine and Israel.

Then turn your backs to support brands who continue to kill men, women and children. Yet the excuses continue to go on a rampage.

“It doesn’t involve me.”

“I would help them if they weren’t so hostile and it’s too complicated.”

I’m left dazed at the mental gymnastics on display, used to justify your lack of inaction and inability to give up some pleasures.

Turning your head to human suffering for cheap products and a quick fix. But instead of criticizing yourself, you look to people who stand up for those who are suffering. “Why must you always make it political?” or “I have fatigue from boycotting,” as if this makes your lack of support better.

In this I found the valid reason for your inability to spread awareness and your criticism of those spreading it. You are lazy, only showing surface-level support, but you hate when others ask for more than that.

Enough has been said, and I leave you with this. By being a bystander during moments of need, by caring only when it’s convenient to you, and by not supporting under the pretense of nonsensical excuses. Are you not as bad as the perpetrators at hand?

As you continue to look at their suffering and do absolutely nothing.
