Best for rewards

Squeebles Spelling Test app

Squeebles Spelling Test,  £3.99, Apple  and Android

This app lets you create spelling tests with your choice of words: great for practising weekly spellings. You can record the words in your own voice, and choose how long your child gets to study them before attempting to spell them.

You can set up different profiles so you can test each child on their own words.

Your child earns stars and cute creatures (Squeebles) for getting words right. They can then use these to play Squeeberang!, a boomerang game where they can compete against siblings or friends, or try to beat their own highest score.

You can also download a range of ready-made tests tailored to your child’s age and stage, such as high frequency words and tricky words for confident readers.

Best for progressive learning

Mr Thorne’s Spellbook app

Mr Thorne’s Spellbook, £1.99, Apple

Teacher Mr Thorne has become a YouTube sensation with his educational phonics videos . His Spellbook app has 101 spelling tests based on the order in which children learn phonics sounds , starting with words beginning with s, a, t, i, n, p and leading onto two- and three-letter sounds.

In each spelling test, your child listens to the word and then has to type it in correctly. Some tests also include tricky high frequency words with irregular spellings.

Getting 10/10 on a spelling test unlocks the safe and reveals a hidden treasure. Can your child collect all 101 artefacts and fill the empty shelves of the museum?

Best for competing with school friends

Spelling Shed app

Spelling Shed, £2.99, Apple

A popular app in schools, Spelling Shed is also great for practising spellings at home. Words are divided into three categories: stage one and two; stage three and four; and stage five and six.

The word appears on screen and is spoken, and when your child has studied it, they click OK and then try to write it from memory by clicking on the right letters. Children score points for each correct word, which they can add to their school leaderboard.

Within each category you can choose an easy, medium or hard level. Easy means that only the letters that appear in the word are provided; medium includes a few extra letters as decoys, and hard features a wider choice of letters to pick from.

In addition, medium and hard levels don’t show the spelling word on screen; it’s just spoken aloud.

The app is colourful and clear, featuring over 2000 National Curriculum words and a dyslexia -friendly font. You can also add your own spelling lists.

Best for early learning

First Words Deluxe app

First Words Deluxe, £4.99, Apple

Ideal for children who are just beginning to master letter sounds, First Words Deluxe teaches them to spell over 150 words in four categories: animals, at home, vehicles and other words. Many of these are short CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words of the type they’ll learn in pre-school or Reception , like ‘bee’ and ‘jet.’

Each word, with a corresponding picture, appears on screen and is read aloud. Your child then needs to drag the letters below into the right places. Once they’re all in place, they’re rewarded with a short animation.

You can opt whether the voiceover refers to letters by their name or their phonics sound. You can also specify the minimum and maximum length of words your child can play with, and whether they appear in length order or randomly.

Best for challenging your child

Spelling Hangman app

Spelling Hangman, £1.99, Apple

Make learning weekly spellings fun with this new take on an old favourite game. You can enter your child’s list of spellings, with the option to record them in your voice as well.

The app then gives your child a word to spell; you can choose whether they see it first, or whether it’s just read out. Your child then picks a letter – and if it’s not in the word, a piece of the gallows or hangman appears. As a tricky twist, they have to choose the letters in the correct order, too.

Can they beat the hangman and complete the word?

Best for using primary school methodology

Spelling Whizz app

Spelling Whizz, £1.99, Apple

This app uses the ‘look – say – cover – write – check’ method used in many primary schools. Each word appears on screen and is spoken aloud; when your child has had a chance to study it, they can cover it up and write it from memory before checking their answer.

Words are divided into six sets that increase in difficulty and replicate the sort of tests often set by schools: for example, ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ words (Set 1), suffixes and prefixes (Set 3) and homophones and silent letters (Set 6). You can also create your own lists of your child’s spellings.

The downside is that there are no rewards or incentives for getting spellings right, but if you’re looking for an app that closely follows the National Curriculum, Spelling Whizz does the trick.

Best for themed spellings

Word Wizard for Kids app

Word Wizard for Kids, £4.99, Apple

Word Wizard has three different ways for children to learn spellings: Word Practice, where a word appears on screen for them to copy by dragging and dropping letters; Scrambled Letters, where they have to arrange a jumble of letters into a word; and Spelling Quiz, where they need to spell words that are read aloud.

There’s also a Talking Movable Alphabet function, where kids can experiment with writing their own words and sentences.

There’s a range of built-in lists, covering everything from common words to food, sports and nature, and you can add your own lists to test your child on their spellings.

This is an American app, but you can change to British English in the settings.

Best for games-mad kids

Spelling Monster app

Spelling Monster, 99p, Apple and Android

If your child is mad about computer games, this will help them master their spellings without even realising.

You input lists of words for your child to spell, then they can choose from seven different games, each with its own friendly monster, to practise their spellings.

These include Letter Pop, where they need to pop the letter bubbles in the correct order; Letter Catch, where they have to catch letters on leaves falling from a tree; Missing Letter, where they’re given the word with a blank and have to fill in the correct letter; Lighthouse Letters, where they guide boats with letters on into the harbour in the right order; and Word Traffic, where they have to run over letters in the correct order using a car.

Best for SATs preparation

Your Spelling

Your Spelling, Ages 5-11, £2.99, Apple

Designed by teachers, this app focuses on the words children need to know for KS1 SATs and KS2 SATs . There are three separate apps: KS1, KS2 Age 7-9, and KS2 Age 9-11. They can be bought individually or as a bundle.

Your Spelling reads each word aloud to your child; they then need to spell it correctly. If they need help, they can ask to see the word and it pops up on screen.

Overall, it’s a fairly dry app, although children can unlock characters for each list they complete correctly, but it’s good for drilling down the words they’re expected to learn under the National Curriculum.

Best use of memory aids

Sir Linkalot spelling app

Sir Linkalot, £1.99 per bundle, Apple and Android

Sir Linkalot is an app that uses mnemonics , or memory aids, to help children learn, memorise and recall the spelling of 150 high frequency words that they’re expected to know under the National Curriculum.

The words are grouped into bundles, each named after a historical literary figure (such as Spaghetti Shakespeare). Your child clicks on the word they want to learn to watch a short animation that introduces and explains the mnemonic. For example, the mnemonic for ‘accommodation’ has two cats (the cc) followed by two mice (mm) chasing them into their accommodation. The videos are accompanied by music to tap into the benefits of multi-sensory learning.

Once your child has worked through a bundle, they can take a test to see if they can recall their spellings. The first bundle is free to download, with subsequent bundles costing £1.99 each.

Ratings and Reviews

I downloaded the app and started testing it out. I can’t get the audio to work, so I will not be purchasing. Otherwise I liked the app and would’ve bought it to help my kids study.

Times tables crash

It's a cute simple app that works great for practicing spelling lists but has a couple problems. Once login names have been entered, there's no way to delete or change them. Also, the times tables crash the app as soon as you tap to open. I have the paid version. Please fix.

Why did you take away hangman?

I purchased this app based on its contents during the trial version. Within two weeks you removed one of the most helpful spelling practice games. Bring back hangman. Or I’d like a refund.

8 Apps That Will Help Your Child to Spell

Published by

It’s inevitable that our children want to spend a lot of time on their iPads so it’s great to find apps and programs that entertain them and are also educational.

I went looking for good apps that will help children to spell and it was actually a lot harder than I thought it would be. There are so many apps available but a lot of them concentrate on phonics and sight words and very few focus solely on spelling.

I couldn’t believe how difficult it was to find spelling apps that used Australian English (clearly a gap in the market – any teachers and app developers out there?) Spelling apps use a combination of spoken and written words, and of course, here in Australia, we prefer our children to learn Australian pronunciation and spelling. I have noticed that from time to time my sons will say words in an American accent from watching programs and using apps from the States!

Here are the best apps I found, free and paid, that would be great to use with our Aussie kids. If you have any others that you use, we’d love to know about them!

Squeebles Spelling Test

Squeebles Spelling

Parents & Teachers - our spelling app lets you set up completely customised spelling tests for your children with the words they need to learn, or download pre-recorded tests (UK Eng.) created by KeyStageFun. Full in-app reporting so that you can keep in touch with your children's learning. Share tests between your devices.  Children - help Gumbo rescue the Squeebles from the Spelling Snake by answering your spellings correctly and earn rewards to use in a fun mini-game called Squeeberang!

We've created a page on our website with instructions and FAQ for Squeebles Spelling Test. If you can't find the answers you're looking for there, please e-mail us on [email protected]

Pre-Recorded Spelling Lists

You can download over 200 pre-recorded spelling lists into the app, completely free of charge. These are based on the UK national curriculum and consultation with UK teachers. To see what these lists cover and which words are included, either look within the Parent / Teacher Zone within the app, or browse the lists online here .

About this app.

Below are the main features of the Squeebles Spelling Test app:

  • Customised Spelling Tests: parents and teachers can set up unlimited spelling tests for each player, with words suitable for that child. Tests can contain any number of words.
  • Pre-recorded Spelling Tests: launched in July 2015, in response to customer requests and updated in March 2019, we now have over 200 pre-recorded spelling lists that you can download, free of charge, into the app. These tests cover ages from 4 to 11 years old and are in UK English. Squeebles Phonics tests follow the structure most helpful for phonics-based learning, while we also offer a series of tests that adhere to National Curriculum teaching requirements around spelling words. Find them all here .
  • Share Tests Between Devices:  share tests between up to 10 of your family's devices, allowing tests created on your device to be taken by your children on theirs. See  our FAQ page  for more details. Teachers can request a larger device limit for their classes so they can share between school devices more easily.
  • Dyslexia-friendly Settings: we give you the option to use the OpenDyslexic font on a per-child basis to allow for easier reading for children with dyslexia.
  • Suitable for All Levels: because a parent or teacher enters the words, the app can be used just as effectively for younger children just starting out with their spellings, as for older children.
  • Great Reward System and Mini-Game: by doing well in their spellings, children earn goes on a fun mini-game within the app called 'Squeeberang' as well as stars to trade for Squeeberangs (boomerang type things that are used in the Squeeberang game). The balance between the spelling tests and this game means they have to keep doing well in their spellings if they want to progress on Squeeberang. There are 100 Squeeberangs to collect which can be used in the game, each with a different theme and 'costing' a different number of stars.
  • Adaptable: when adding a word to a test, the parent or teacher records an audio version of it via the app's easy-to-use recording feature as well as entering the text version of the word. Each child can then be either allowed to see the word or not, as well as hear it, before being asked to spell it. So, as children become more confident with a particular test their crutch of seeing the word first can be removed, challenging them further.
  • Several Game Modes: as well as standard tests, each child can also be tested on a random selection of words from all tests or on just their tricky words (words they answered incorrectly previously).
  • Cursive Font Option: for children learning to write cursively, we include the option to allow for a cursive font to be used when spelling words.
  • Stats and Reporting: stats are recorded for each child on a per-test basis. The app also stores the words they've spelled incorrectly (including how they spelled them incorrectly) and general stats on their progress to date.
  • Individual Settings: each child using the app can have a completely personalised experience, with settings for keyboard type, UK or US English, how long (or if at all) they see the word for before being asked to spell it, whether they are asked to re-type incorrectly spelled words immediately as well as several other individual options.
  • No In-App Purchases: the app costs a one-off, up front fee and that's it - we will never charge you more for extra features or to unlock progress.
  • No Ads: we never display ads in our children's apps.

download best spelling app on App Store

Arguably the best spelling app for Australia on the app stores. School Spelling Homework App. I first decided to write this app to try to fix the constant struggle I had been having with my then 9 year old son. It was so difficult to get him to complete his weekly spelling words.

His homework and probably that of 90% of the primary school kids in Australia mainly consists of 10-15 spelling words of which he has to   Look, Say, Cover and Write .

He also has to learn a particular times table by writing it out. As I am not especially organised I did not have the time to do this with him. Unfortunately I was not able to even ensure he was doing his homework. Sadly we were often trying to do it on the way to school Friday morning.

I work full time and have 5 children. It is not just the lack of time. I also found his delaying tactics excruciating. He searched for his homework book, pencil, pencil sharpener, got a drink, went to the toilet.  Often he  just seemed to go missing for ages.

By then I generally give up .

Improve Child’s Spelling with School Spelling Homework App

So I wrote the app and then he could do his spelling homework and  times tables on a phone or Ipad. Happily he can complete homework on the way to football training or shopping. I have recently updated this app to include printing completed spelling homework  results.  Also there is an option to email to the teacher. I have recently added over 1000 grade appropriate spelling words.  This will help your child get up to speed for spelling at their year level. Homework help is  a v ailable on iPad, iPod and iPhone.

Enter Weekly Spelling Words.

Each week as the spelling homework spelling list  comes home with your child from school, enter the new list into the app.

New Feature added

In the latest release of Spelling Bee & Times Tables you can now enter weekly homework word lists by taking a photo of words to learn and converting to spelling test within seconds. This feature saves time dramatically in entering words each week. Add sentences for the words which require a context. This makes completing homework tasks for you and your child much easier and faster.

Best Spelling App Australia

Alternatively you can still enter words manually – Record the word and sentence to give the word context. Have your child complete the spelling list   until 100% is achieved. A random test can also be selected from all the spelling lists entered so far.

School Spelling Homework Help with Timed Addition, Subtraction and

Multiplication tests.

The Spelling Bee and Times Tables app also provides timed test for multiplication, addition and subtraction . Recorded best times is a great incentive for your child. Try to get your child to beat their best times as fast mental arithmetic is crucial to furthering the child’s maths ability. New feature includes math games to help children learn their times tables in a fun way, number searches, fill in the blanks, pop the balloons, multiple choice and crosswords.

Check out this link for other ways to help your child be better at maths How to help your child do better at Maths

Best Spelling App Australia

More than 1000 grade appropriate

Spelling words provided with this school spelling homework app.

For the times when your child has completed the weekly spelling homework  and maths homework,  over 1000 grade appropriate spelling words have been provided.  Spelling Words   app makes it easy to keep track of your child’s progress. New feature added – Daily spelling challenges. Compete with children from around the world.

Best Spelling App

Easier and less stressful for both busy parent and child.

Recently I have added addition and subtraction timed tables to the timed multiplication tests.

Why learning the times tables is really important

If you think about it, you use multiplication in your day to day life. When you go shopping, you often need to compare out the cost of similar items or how much it will cost to get multiple items. If you are cooking and need to make a double recipe you are going to need to know how to multiply and if you are at a shop and want to determine what type of discount you are getting you need to learn multiplication. Multiplication and maths is used whether you realise it or not almost on a daily basis.

You can now try this Spelling Bee and Times Tables app out for free in your browser by clicking the icon below. This will give you a taste of the full app available on apple App Store and google play store. Spelling Bee and Time Tables will also soon be available on windows and Mac.

We memorise daily, but do you realise that your brain is like a computer. Whatever you put into it, will most probably remain there for a long period of time. You can choose to fill it with unimportant things, or you can fill it with skills that can be a benefit to you your entire life. Like multiplication. You will use this skill for as long as you live. Using and teaching your brain to memorize is probably the most important skill of all.

How you can help your child learn weekly spelling words

We as parents can only fit so many things into our busy lives each day but just a few minutes each day in the car on the way to football training or shopping could really help with your child’s education. The app also includes spelling lists to be inputted each week from their weekly spelling list. Also has an option to email direct to teacher.

Spelling Bee Games & Tests is now also in Swedish

spelling homework help app

Google's Circle to Search can help students with their homework, here is how to use the feature

I n January this year, Google announced the Circle To Search feature for Android devices, which allowed users to search for anything on their phones without having to switch applications. Users can simply outline items on their screen with their fingers to prompt a Google search. The feature debuted on Samsung's Galaxy S24 series and was then introduced on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and the recently-launched Pixel 8a. Last night, during Google's annual developer conference, Google I/O, the company introduced new updates for the Circle to Search feature.

Google is boosting the capabilities of Android's Circle to Search and it can now prove to be useful for students. The feature now includes a new tool designed to guide students through solving math and physics problems from their homework. Google says that while the feature aids in understanding the problem, it doesn't complete the homework for students and is there to help them learn how to tackle the problems themselves.

By using an Android smartphone or tablet, students can activate Circle to Search to receive AI-driven assistance with mathematical word problems. The function breaks down the problem and outlines steps necessary to find the correct solution.

This enhancement comes at a time when the use of AI tools in education, like ChatGPT, has sparked debate. There are widespread concerns about how students might use these tools to expedite their homework. Google is keen to position this new capability as a supportive educational tool, addressing some of these concerns by focusing on helping students learn rather than doing their work for them.

Circle to Search is set to expand further. The company announced that later this year, Circle To Search will be equipped to handle more complex math equations involving formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. To power these advanced features, Google is leveraging LearnLM, its latest AI model specifically fine-tuned for educational purposes.

"Starting today, Circle to Search can now help students with homework, giving them a deeper understanding, not just an answer — directly from their phones and tablets. When students circle a prompt they're stuck on, they'll get step-by-step instructions to solve a range of physics and math1 word problems without leaving their digital info sheet or syllabus. Later this year, Circle to Search will be able to help solve even more complex problems involving symbolic formulas, diagrams, graphs and more. This is all possible due to our LearnLM effort to enhance our models and products for learning," the company noted in its blog post announcing the feature.
