Subtraction Word Problems

Subtraction helps us to find the difference. Subtraction can tell us how many are left.

Subtraction is easy to do! Subtraction is the opposite of addition. We can use subtraction in word, or story, problems. Subtraction skills can help us solve correctly!

For example:

Let’s take a look at the example above. We are subtracting because some of the dolphins swim away. There are 10 dolphins to start with and 5 swim away. We need to figure out how many are left. We can do this by subtracting 10 – 5 to get our answer.

We write it like this:

10 – 5 = 5

There are 5 dolphins left!

Let’s look at another problem!

Let’s take a look at the example above. We are subtracting because some of the butterflies fly away. There are 11 butterflies to start with and 4 fly away. We need to figure out how many are left. We can do this by subtracting 11 – 4 to get our answer.

11 – 4 = 7

There are 7 butterflies left!

Amazing work! Let’s look at another problem together.

This time we will subtract strawberries. We are SUBTRACTING to find out how many are left because some have been eaten. We can see that there were nine strawberries to start with. Six of them have been eaten When we SUBTRACT 9 minus 6 , we have 3 left. We say: NINE minus SIX equals THREE. We write it like this:

9 – 6 = 3

Let’s try one more together!

This time we will subtract donuts. We are SUBTRACTING to find out how many are left because some have been eaten. We can see that there were ten donuts to start with. Six of them have been eaten When we SUBTRACT 10 minus 6 , we have 4 left. We say: TEN minus SIX equals FOUR. We write it like this:

10 – 6 = 4

There are many different words that are used to describe subtraction. For example, we can find out HOW MANY MORE there are or how many ARE LEFT. Here are several other examples:

Knowing these keywords will help you understand that in order to solve some problems, you must subtract. You might see these keywords in math story problems.

There are many strategies you can use to help you subtract correctly. We will learn about these in other lessons.

Now, let’s practice!

Math Mammoth Subtraction 1 is a worktext that covers the concept of subtraction, the relationship between addition and subtraction, and the various meanings of subtraction .

In the first lesson, Subtraction Is Taking Away , the child learns the basic meaning of subtraction as taking away objects, and learns to write subtractions from an illustration where some objects are crossed out.

In the next lesson, the child counts down to subtract, which ties in subtraction with the number line. This is a transitional strategy to solve subtraction problems, because later students will learn more efficient ways to subtract, but it is important conceptually.

The following lesson, Subtraction and Addition in the Same Picture , begins the study of the relationship between addition and subtraction . This concept will span several lessons. This first lesson presents two sets of objects, such as blue and white balls, and the student writes both an addition sentence and a subtraction sentence from this illustration.

The lesson When Can You Subtract? concentrates on the idea that some subtractions, such as 4 − 5, are meaningless when you think of taking away. The child also makes subtraction patterns in this lesson.

Then we continue studying the connection between addition and subtraction in the lesson Two Subtractions from One Addition . As an example, the child writes both 8 − 3 = 5 and 8 − 5 = 3 from the addition 3 + 5 = 8. This idea ties in with fact families, a concept that is coming up soon.

In the lesson Two Parts — One Total , we study word problems that do not involve the idea of taking away but have two parts making up a total. For example, if there are 10 flowers of which some are white and some are red, and seven of them are white, how many are red?

Then we study fact families , which means writing two additions and two subtractions using the same three numbers.

In the lesson How Many More? students find how many more or how many fewer objects one person has than the other by drawing the objects. This lesson can easily be done with manipulatives if desired.

In the very next lesson, “How Many More” Problems and Differences , we continue the theme, this time writing a missing addend addition for problems that ask “how many more.” For example, Veronica has 4 marbles and Ann has 6. We write the missing addend sentence 4 + ___ = 6 to find how how many more Ann has. In the next lesson the child then learns to write subtraction sentences for such problems.

The PDF version of this book can be filled in on a computer, phone, or tablet, using the annotation tools found in many PDF apps. See more .

While this book is not tied to any grade level, it is most suitable for first grade.

‘Envision’ the ideas taught:

First Grade Subtraction Worksheets are designed to make a child understand the concept of subtraction by providing them with visual representations of subtraction equations, allowing them to see the tangible remainder. Just as watching an instructional video helps us understand difficult procedures, Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets work with visual stimuli to train students in the process of subtraction.

Increases pace of calculation:

Once students have understood the concept of subtraction, they can increase the pace of their work, and their confidence. That is precisely why First Grade Subtraction Worksheets contain plenty of problems in the forms of fun images, such as oranges, cherries, or dolls. Solving questions in the worksheets correctly makes the students excited to keep going, and their timing eventually gets better as they practice more.

Helps streamline focus:

It can be hard to keep a student's attention when introducing unfamiliar and complex concepts. Engaging young students with familiar images and situations is a great way to keep their attention and get them to focus on numbers and questions. First Grade Math Worksheets feature visual accompaniments to basic concepts so children can recognize and participate in their studies and apply what they learned to the real world.

Honing their logical skills:

Building up their logical thinking skills will be instrumental to the future success of students in higher level math classes. Without the ability to think in a well-organized and rational manner, students will be unable to master the complex equations and formulas they will have to learn as they get older. Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets are designed to methodically work through basic concepts to enhance a student's precision and diligence.

Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets Explained

Subtraction is one of the most basic mathematical concepts needed to build a strong foundation. When solving subtraction problems, single-digit numbers can be easily subtracted, but larger numbers need to be handled in a more complicated manner. Using the 1st Grade Math Worksheets can help a student build up their understanding of subtraction and help them to handle complex equations with ease.

Subtraction is something we use every day without even realizing. Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets use real world examples to help students understand and become comfortable with the concept. Here are some examples of the type of problems you might find on a 1st Grade Subtraction Worksheet:

  • There are eight green balls on the worksheet. The teacher or parent explains that four of those balls will be crossed out. The child is asked to determine how many green balls remain. They can physically cross out the balls and discover the remainder.
  • There are nine red apples drawn on the worksheet, followed by the subtraction symbol (the minus (-) sign) and five apples beside it on the opposite side. The student is told that five apples were stolen from a farmer who had nine. The child can cross out five apples from the original nine when asked how many the poor, unfortunate farmer is left with to come up with the proper answer of four.
  • These problems with imagery are then formulated into equations such as 8-4=4 and 9-5=4. Gradually, these colorful pictures transition into numbers and mathematical symbols.

Printable Subtraction Worksheets for Grade 1

As students progress, the Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets become more complicated, and require a deeper understanding of number-hopping and subtraction. Here is an example of a higher level subtraction problem found on the worksheets:

  • 10 flowers are drawn on the Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheet. The problem states that one flower is taken away from the bouquet. On top of that, four more flowers wilt, not having received any water. How many of those blossoms continue to bloom in the bunch? Additionally, the student is asked to represent this problem on a number line and display the answer.
  • The child is required to employ their knowledge of 'number-hopping' and use it on not one reduction, but two.
  • To get the answer, the student jumps from 0 to 10 and leaps back by one interim. The arc ends at 9. From 9, the child hops further backward by four digits, finally landing at the number 5. Therefore, the following equation is written 10-1-4=5.

Subtraction is one of the most important techniques in mathematics. Without an understanding of addition and subtraction, math is impossible. Use our printable Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets to help your child conquer math!

How are first grade subtraction worksheets beneficial for students?

Subtraction problem – solving worksheets are useful because they encourage students to think critically about the applications of subtraction in real – world situations. Daily tasks like counting change and determining how many pupils in a class want to go to the playground include the use of subtraction.

How can we introduce subtraction for first grade students?

It can be difficult to introduce new math ideas to first – graders, but if the material is given in an interesting way, they can do well. In the first grade, students learn how to subtract single – digit integers from 0 to 10, after which they go on to increasingly difficult subtraction problems. Grade 1 Subtraction Worksheets employ a step – by – step methodology to guarantee that your youngster is comprehending and following along with the curriculum.

Why is learning subtraction necessary for students?

Because it is a part of daily life, subtraction is a crucial subject to grasp in childhood. To interact with society efficiently, we need to be able to subtract since, among a variety of other daily activities, we employ subtraction when managing money, food, travel, and time.

How is subtraction useful?

When subtracting one number from another, subtraction is a crucial tool we utilize to determine what is left. To calculate how much money Lucy has left, we can apply subtraction, for instance, if she has $23 and spends $12 on a new shirt. We can subtract $23 from $12 and we will get $11.

How is subtraction used in daily life?

When figuring out how much medicine to give a child based on their weight, gauging how much they have grown, counting cash in a piggy bank, or keeping score at baseball games, parents and other caregivers also add or subtract.

Subtraction worksheets for 1st graders with number lines and objects

Hello, and welcome to another fun resource about math education for young learners! Today we'll discuss subtraction, one of the most fundamental skills for 1st graders. Here, we will show you how to use number lines and objects to teach subtraction in a fun and engaging way. We will also share some free printable subtraction worksheets for 1 st graders that you can use for practice and review with your child.

Subtraction is the process of taking away one quantity from another, and it helps children develop their number sense, logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

With this definition in mind, let's kick start with solving subtraction problems using fun tips and tricks that will help your child master subtraction with confidence and ease!

Why subtraction is important for 1st graders

As one of the basic math operations, subtraction is important to 1st graders for many reasons.

First, it is the opposite of addition , which means taking away some amount from another amount. For example, 5 - 2 = 3 means taking away 2 from 5 and getting 3 as the answer.

Secondly, it helps your child develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. It also helps them learn how to compare quantities and measure differences .

Above all, subtraction is helpful for everyday situations, such as counting money, sharing items, or finding out how much is left.

Subtraction worksheets for 1st graders with number lines and objects

How to use number lines to teach subtraction

A number line is a visual representation of numbers on a line. It can help your child see how subtraction works by showing them how to move along the line from one number to another. For example;

To subtract 3 from 7, your child can start at 7 and move 3 steps to the left on the number line, ending at 4.

To use number lines to teach subtraction , you can follow these steps:

  • Draw a number line on a piece of paper or use a printable one. Ensure it has enough numbers for the subtraction problems you want to practice.
  • Write a subtraction problem below the number line, such as 7 - 3 = __.
  • Ask your child to find the first number (the minuend) on the number line and mark it with a dot or a circle.
  • Ask your child to count how many steps they need to move to the left on the number line to find the second number (the subtrahend). For example, if the subtrahend is 3, they must move 3 steps to the left.
  • Ask your child to mark the final number (the difference) on the number line with another dot or circle.
  • Ask your child to write the answer in the blank space of the subtraction problem.

You can repeat this process with different subtraction problems until your child feels confident using number lines.

Fun and engaging subtraction activities with objects

Another way to teach subtraction is by using fun and engaging activities with objects your child can manipulate and count. This can help your child see how subtraction works concretely. For example, you can use toys, blocks, buttons, coins, or anything your child likes.

To use objects to teach subtraction , you can follow these steps:

  • Gather some objects you want to use and place them on a table or a tray.
  • Write a subtraction problem on paper or a card, such as 6 - 4 = __.
  • Ask your child to take the same number of objects as the first number (the minuend) and arrange them in a row or a group. For example, if the minuend is 6, they must take 6 objects.
  • Ask your child to remove the same number of objects as the second number (the subtrahend) from the row or group. For example, if the subtrahend is 4, they must take away 4 objects.
  • Ask your child to count how many objects are left in the row or group (the difference) and write the answer in the blank space of the subtraction problem.

Repeat this process with different subtraction problems until your child feels confident using objects.

Free printable subtraction worksheets for practice and review

If you want more practice and review for your child, you can use our free printable subtraction worksheets for 1st graders that you can download and print for free. These worksheets are designed to help your students practice and review subtraction skills using number lines and objects.

Subtracting with models

One of the easiest ways to teach subtraction is by using models or objects. Models can be anything your students can count and manipulate, such as blocks, cubes, counters, beads, etc. You can also use pictures or drawings of objects to represent them.

Using models helps your students visualize the subtraction process and see how the quantity changes when something is taken away. For example, if you have 5 apples and you take away 2 apples, you can show your students how to use models to solve the problem:

You can use 5 apple models (or pictures) and take away 2 of them. Then you can ask your students to count how many apples are left. The answer is 3.

You can use this worksheet to practice subtracting with models. It has 10 problems that your students need to solve by using models. They must draw or cross out the models to show the subtraction and write the answer in the box.

Make numbers with subtraction

Another way to teach subtraction is by using the concept of making numbers with subtraction . This means finding two numbers that, when subtracted, give a certain number. For example, if you want to make 4 with subtraction, you can use these pairs of numbers:

5 - 1 = 4  ;  6 - 2 = 4  ;  7 - 3 = 4  ;  8 - 4 = 4  ;  9 - 5 = 4  ;  10 - 6 = 4

You can use this worksheet to practice making numbers with subtraction. It has 10 problems that your students need to solve by finding two numbers that when subtracted, give the given number. They need to write the subtraction sentence in the box.

Subtraction sentences with number line

A number line is a valuable tool for teaching subtraction sentences as well. A number line is a line that shows numbers in order from smallest to largest. You can use a number line to show how to subtract by moving from one number to another.

To subtract on a number line, you start from the first number (the minuend) and move left by the second number (the subtrahend). The number where you stop is the answer (the difference). For example, if you want to subtract 3 from 7 on a number line, you do this:

You start from 7 and move left by 3 units. You stop at 4. The answer is 4.

You can use this worksheet to practice writing subtraction sentences with a number line. It has 10 problems that your students need to solve by using a number line. They must write the subtraction sentence matching the movement on the number line.

Turn words into subtraction sentences

The last skill your students need to learn is how to turn words into subtraction sentences . This means reading a word problem that involves subtraction and writing a subtraction sentence that represents it.

For example, if you read this word problem:

Anna has 8 candies. She gives 3 candies to her friend. How many candies does Anna have left?

You can write this subtraction sentence:

The answer is 5.

You can use this worksheet to practice turning words into subtraction sentences . It has 10 problems that your students need to solve by reading the word problem and writing the subtraction sentence in the box.

Tips and tricks to help your child master subtraction

Here are some tips and tricks that can help your child master subtraction :

  • Make sure your child understands what subtraction means and why it is important. You can explain it in simple terms and give examples from everyday life.
  • Start with simple subtraction facts using pictures or number lines before moving on to more challenging ones using objects or columns.
  • Use different methods and strategies to teach subtraction, such as counting back, counting up, using number bonds, or using fact families.
  • Make subtraction fun and engaging by using games, puzzles, songs, stories, or crafts.
  • Praise your child's efforts and achievements and encourage them to keep practicing.

Three exciting ways to explore subtraction with pictures in grade 1

Here are three exciting ways to explore subtraction with pictures in grade 1 that will make your students love math!

  • Subtraction Bingo: This is a great game to practice subtraction facts up to 10. You will need some bingo cards with subtraction problems on them, and some counters or chips. You can find some free printable bingo cards here: https://www.math-salamanders.com/subtraction-bingo.html . To play, give each student a bingo card and some counters. Then call out a number from 0 to 10. The students have to find a subtraction problem on their card that has that number as the answer and cover it with a counter. The first student to cover five problems in a row, column or diagonal wins!
  • Subtraction Puzzles: This is another fun way to practice subtraction facts up to 20. You will need some puzzles with subtraction problems and pictures on them. You can find some free printable puzzles here: https://www.123homeschool4me.com/subtraction-puzzles_16/ . To play, cut out the puzzles and mix up the pieces. Then give each student a set of pieces and ask them to match the subtraction problem with the picture that shows the answer. For example, if the problem is 15 - 7, they have to find the picture that shows 8 apples.
  • Subtraction Stories: This is a creative way to explore subtraction with pictures and words. You will need some paper and crayons or markers. To play, ask each student to draw a picture of something they like, such as animals, toys, food, etc. Then ask them to write a subtraction story using their picture. For example, if they drew four cats and two dogs, they could write: "I have four cats and two dogs. Two cats ran away. How many cats do I have now? 4 - 2 = 2. I have two cats left." Encourage them to use different numbers and situations for their stories. You can find some engaging example here First, then, now (subtraction) - Maths - Learning with BBC Bitesize - BBC Bitesize .
