The influence of Pidgin English on educational outcomes among secondary school students in Nigeria
2020, International Journal of English and Literature
This study was carried out in view of the influences of Pidgin English amongst the students in Nigeria using Port Harcourt Local Government Area in Rivers State as a case study. It was conducted on two hundred students and eight teachers from four selected schools, four government workers and eight staff from the media. This research was executed because of the high rate of communication in Pidgin English amongst secondary school students, which has become a threat to their educational career. However, it was discovered in the course of the study, that there are factors that enhance this issue. The negative impact of the socio-linguistic status of Pidgin English in the Nigerian society has necessitated some recommendations which include: The creation of awareness among parents, the media and the government against the dangers of habitual use of Pidgin English, introduction and training of teachers on introduce effective methods during the English language lesson delivery. The government should invest more resources and manpower in education to enable the children from poor homes improve in the English Language, and Pidgin English should be introduced in the curriculum, so students could know the structures and lexical, to avoid code-switching it with that of the English Language.

The use of Pidgin English in the Nigerian context has gone beyond verbal communication to become more of a mode of behaviour as its expression has moved from informal conversation to formal situations. The above scenario necessitated this study which investigates Eha-Amufu secondary school students’ usage of the Standard English in view of the use of the Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE). The study sets to find out what informs the usage and the extent the Nigerian Pidgin English has affected the use of the Standard English of these students using the affective filter hypothesis from Stephen Krashen’s 2003 Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory. Using the questionnaire and essay writing as research instruments, data were collected from a sample of 200 students and willing teachers from four selected secondary schools in Eha-Amufu. Findings reveal that the use of the Nigerian Pidgin English is traceable to homes and peer group influence and has grossly affected the students’ Standard E...
This study was aimed at investigating how the Pidgi n variety of the English language, otherwise known as “Brokin”, has influenced the tea ching and learning of the Standard English variety in Nigeria. Having adopted the English lang ua e as was introduced by the British as Nigeria’s lingua franca for over four decades, one would have expected a thorough mastery of its usage but the reverse is the case. It is quite obvious that the world has turned into a global village with the English language still gaining wid e spread usage having several other peculiar varieties: the Nigerian English, the American varie ty, the British English and the Pidgin English to mention a few; which in themselves have other va rieties. Relatively evident, is the fact that both students and teachers grapple to gain mastery of the Standard English and this has brought about a limitation in their competence and performa nce; the Nigerian graduate still finds himself code-switching from the Standard English ...

The English language is the language of formal education in Nigeria. For some time now, students' performance in the language at public examinations has been very unsatisfactory to the stakeholders in education. A linguistic problem is one crucial contributing factor. The research methodology combines two data gathering instruments: the questionnaire and examination of respondents' written essay. The paper discovers that Nigerian pidgin is a linguistic force to reckon with as its coexistence with the all important English language requires a clinical attention by all: especially; the government, curriculum developers and teachers. Those who formulate policy on education would need to plan for the Nigerian pidgin, not only in order to arrest the ever sliding performance of students in English language, but also to improve it.

Attitudes towards language or language behaviour implicate social meanings relative to social norms in a given speech community. As demonstrated in the literature, language attitude study is not only a way of understanding how language is used, for example, as a symbol of identity or in-group membership, it also helps to illuminate the social importance of a given code or language (see Adegbija, 1994; Ihemere 2006; Salami 1991).

Cameroon, like some African countries, has a complex language situation in the sense that in addition to the two official languages (French and English), many indigenous languages do exist. Because of this linguistic diversity, Cameroonians have devised a means of a common linguistic identity - Cameroon Pidgin English (CPE) - through which they can understand each other.
Pidgin English "then spread round the world, following sailors and trade-routes. A distinctive branch of it is found in Papua New Guinea and its nearby islands" (Gooden, 2015, p. 175 - 176). According to him, pidgin language is not peculiar to English; there is Pidgin French. We also have Pidgin Portuguese, etc.
Language contact is a key issue in the field of sociolinguistics. One notable phenomenon in the field of language contact is Pidgin English. Historically, Pidgin began as a language marked by traditional interference used chiefly by the prosperous and privileged sections of a community, represented by the unskilled and illiterate class of the society (Quirk et al., 1985).
The authors' typologically-framed investigation of the features of the language, from its phonetics, phonology and lexicon to its syntax and discourse structure, allows the reader a clear view of the linguistic character of CPE. Cameroon Pidgin English (CPE) is an English-lexified Atlantic expanded pidgin/creole spoken in some form by an estimated 50% of Cameroon's population, primarily in ...
