Most people would agree that public speaking isn't easy, and this is especially true when you're feeling the added pressure that comes along with giving a speech at a loved one's wedding. Not only do you have the attention of dozens (if not hundreds!) of guests you probably don't know, but you're also trying to appeal to a group of people in a wide range of ages from all different phases of the couple's lives. What's more, you want your speech to delight the couple of the hour and be as appealing to your group of friends as it to the newlyweds' grandparents. All in all, it's a tough task.

Before you panic, know that we're here to help. Ahead, we're sharing a comprehensive guide on what you should include in your speech , how to nail your delivery, and questions to consider to get the brainstorming process started—all from noteworthy speakers, well-established speechwriters, and wedding planners (who have seen it all).

Every great wedding speech has one thing in common: the right flow. Factor in these guidelines to help you find your own organic rhythm.

Open With a Statement or Question

Don't lead with a joke or a reference to how nervous you are. "The goal is to engage your audience, not make it a boring one-way message," says award-winning motivational speaker Jaime Pfeffer . "You'll lose them if you do this."

Introduce Yourself

After your opener, introduce yourself, says Fallon Carter , a wedding planner, even designer, and professional speaker. "A lot of times, people don't know who is speaking, and they don't know their relationship to the bride or the groom," she says. "It's really important to identify yourself, so make sure you've prepared something."

Address Your Audience

As speaker and life strategy coach Mark Black, CSP , points out, focusing on yourself only enhances nerves. "Instead, concentrate on your audience and how you want them to feel. This will help you to speak from the heart, allowing your speech to do what it's supposed to do: Make the couple feel special while also engaging the audience."

Focus on a Few Points

Seasoned speaker Susan Bender Phelps, CEO of Odyssey Mentoring & Leadership , says her top guideline is to select one to three aspects of the newlyweds that you love and appreciate, along with no more than three short stories to illustrate each of these points (or that one point). "The simple, succinct story or stories where the bride and groom are the hero will work best." This is an excellent way to structure your speech and keep your message focused.

How Long Wedding Speeches Should Be

The ideal length for a speech is three to five minutes, with five minutes being the absolute maximum you should speak for. That's it. "I’ve never been to a wedding where anyone said, 'That was a great wedding, but the best man speech was just too short and that  ruined  it,'" says David Litt , the speechwriter for former President Barack Obama and author of Thanks, Obama .

Carter agrees: "I always say anywhere between two and five minutes—and no more than five minutes," she says. "You want to keep things short and sweet." It's just as important to keep in mind when the speech will take place when determining length, since toasts are often timed with meal courses: "Be mindful of how long a course generally takes or how long it takes people to eat," Carter adds, noting that most courses last between 15 and 20 minutes and that several speeches have to fit inside each window. "If there are other people speaking, you want to be mindful and give them space."

Wedding Speech Tips

Now that you've established the right framework for your words, take note of these essential tips for acing the delivery from a few speaking pros.

Rehearse Regularly

The better prepared you are, the more confident you'll be and the better your speech will be, says author and professional speaker Barry Maher . A good rule of thumb is to practice the speech enough that you can remember the points you want to make and the order in which you want to make them. That way, you can look out to the crowd and make eye contact every so often.

Record Yourself Practicing

Use your phone to take a video of yourself practicing, suggests Kate Kenfield , speaker and sex educator. "It can be a little uncomfortable to watch yourself, but you'll be able to identify distracting mannerisms, such as the verbal pauses 'um,' 'uh,' and 'like'." It's also a good idea to practice your speech in front of someone else. "A second opinion can help you craft your piece and make it that much stronger," she says.

Don't forget body language! Rehearse the speech in front of a mirror and notice things like your facial expression, eye contact, and hand position.

Avoid Alcohol

Although it may be tempting to look for some liquid courage, alcohol definitely won't do you any favors, warns keynote speaker Amy Morin , author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do . "It may cause you to slur your speech and forget your lines, so wait until after your toast to celebrate," she advises. If you need a drink to loosen up the nerves or can't refrain from participating in a toast without being rude, stick to one glass of Champagne before you address the crowd.

Use Nerves to Your Advantage

A little nervousness can actually liven up your speech. "I get worried if I'm not a little nervous," says Maher. "I'll actually try to make myself a little tense to get my energy level up." The key is to harness that energy and communicate it in a positive, genuine way; tensing up to the point that you forget your words or panic won't make for a great presentation.

Be Yourself

Keep in mind that you're not putting on a show, only sharing your personal perspective. Trying too hard to force the funny can yield the opposite of the desired effect, cautions Matt Dalley, co-founder of Simply Eloped . "I've noticed that keeping it short and sweet, heartfelt and warm, and coming across as authentic and focused on the couple is something we are all capable of and generates some very wonderful moments," he says.

Never Embarrass the Newlyweds

It's a wedding toast, not a roast. While this should go without saying, keep the bachelor or bachelorette party jokes out of it, and remember that grandma and possibly a few colleagues are in the audience, notes Laurie Battaglia , a keynote speaker and workplace strategist. "It's okay to look back at childhood and refer to something funny, but ask yourself if you'd like 200-plus of your closest friends knowing that story about you."

Use Your Notes

Reading your speech straight from a piece of paper is a big no-no. However, having a couple of note cards handy is encouraged. "You're likely to be nervous, excited, and exhausted, which can make you forget your lines," explains Morin. "The audience won't care if you glance at your notes. In fact, there's a good chance they won't even notice."

Wedding Speech Brainstorm Ideas

Need some inspiration? Ask yourself these questions to get the brainstorming process going.

• Who will speak before you? After you? How will this affect the content of your toast? (Perhaps you want to include a reference to their speech, thank them for an introduction, or introduce the next speaker).
• Is there someone you should thank for making the event possible and inviting you to speak?
• What would you want to hear in this speech if you were in the audience?
• Is there a favorite story or memory that the couple would want you to share with their friends and family?

Maid of Honor Wedding Speech Example

"Hi, I’m Maya, the bride’s older sister . With Lucy being three years younger, we fell right into our respective roles as sister-rivals growing up. We constantly fought over stolen clothes, monopolizing the phone back when landlines were a thing, and what boy band to blare from the car speakers. I’m still Team Backstreet Boys while Lucy is forever indebted to NSYNC.

Looking back on those memories, I should have stepped up and granted Lucy permission to wear my favorite sweater for picture day, to hand her the phone once in a while, and to let her play, 'Bye Bye Bye.' Even I can admit that’s a good one. But despite Lucy being the younger sister, she has always been more patient, more accommodating, and more thoughtful than me. And that’s because when it comes to the people she loves, she’s all in.

She’s the one to prioritize their desires. She’s the one to compromise first. And, she’s the one to support their dreams as if they were her own.

Father of the Bride Wedding Speech Example

"Good evening, family, and friends. I’m Daniel Lee, the father of the bride. I’d like to welcome you to this special occasion where we get to celebrate the love between my daughter Allison and her new wife, Kristin. 

Standing up here today, I’m reminded of all the moments that led to this significant one. The dance recitals that ended with standing ovations and the soccer games that concluded with winning scoreboards.

What Not to Say in a Wedding Speech

Your job when delivering a wedding speech is to keep things light—tell an anecdote, make an emotional connection, then wish the couple well before you close out. Anything that doesn't feel definitively positive should be avoided. "I would advocate against bringing up negative details, specifically past relationships or past spouses," says Carter. "Skip anything that you wouldn't want to be physically recorded and played over and over again—this is a rule of thumb."

Keep it light, delicate, and present- and future-focused, Carter adds. "If you're going to go into the past, make those stories really intentional," she says. "Bring those stories back to who they are now. Your mission is to create a great environment and vibe and to potentially give some information about one of the newlyweds, so that it's enlightening for all guests."

Someone you love is getting married, and you’ve just been asked to give a speech at the wedding. What an honor! But also, if you’re not used to giving speeches, what a nightmare! Public speaking can be scary , which is why many people prefer to avoid it. But when your bestie asks you to make a speech at his or her wedding, it’s time to rally. But now you’re wondering if you even know how to write a wedding speech! What makes some wedding speeches fun and memorable, and what makes others cringy and fall flat? We’ve got you. We’ve put together the ultimate guide for how to write a wedding speech, focusing on things you definitely should do, things you definitely should NOT do, and then how to deliver your killer wedding speech like a pro.

If you’re wondering how to write a wedding speech, here are a few “Do’s” to keep in mind.

1. Start planning early

If you don’t know how to write a wedding speech but the bride just asked you to give one, this is not a time to procrastinate. Public speaking is one of the number one fears many people have, so it’s likely you’ve avoided giving too many public speeches before this. And unless you’re a performer or a veteran improv comedian, you might not do too well winging this one. If you get nervous in front of an audience (as most of us do), the best defense against freezing up when you take the mic is being prepared. 

As soon as you know you’ve been asked to give a speech at the wedding, begin jotting down notes immediately. Whenever you’re inspired by a thought of the couple or remember an anecdote that might be worth retelling, make note of it. This will help to give you a pool of ideas to draw from when you start writing down the speech.

Begin gathering ideas and writing the speech a couple of weeks to a month before the wedding. You’ll need time to edit, fine-tune it, and make it concise. And as wedding showers, bachelorette parties, and other wedding festivities begin, you might find there are entertaining stories from these events you want to add as well. If you want to write it all at once, you can do that too. However, make sure to sleep on it and come back with fresh eyes. You don’t want just “okay,” you want your speech to be heartfelt and meaningful.

You will also want to begin early to give yourself time to practice and rehearse your speech plenty of times.

2. Introduce yourself and how you know the bride and groom

No matter how large or small the wedding is, it’s likely you will not be familiar with many of the guests on one or both sides. And they won’t be familiar with you either. So don’t leave them guessing! 

Make sure when you start to write a wedding speech to introduce yourself and mention how you know the couple. This will help them understand the context of your speech, which will also help it to be more well-received. 

3. Thank hosts, guests, and wedding party; congratulate the couple

It’s also courteous to take this time to thank the hosts and other members of the wedding party for all the hard work that went into the event, and to thank guests for being there to support the newlyweds, especially those who had to travel far. 

It’s also a good time to officially congratulate the newlyweds and offer them your personal well-wishes for their future. It is imperative that you don’t forget this part, because they are the whole reason you’re there and giving a speech!

4. Make it personal

Whether you are the maid of honor, the best man, father of the bride, or just a friend, you were asked to give a speech because of your close connection and relationship with either the bride or groom (or both). 

And since you know your friend as well as you do, you probably have plenty of stories to share; so the next tip for how to write a wedding speech is don’t hesitate to make it personal and share those stories! This will also help guests get to know the other half of the couple they might not know as well or are just meeting for the first time. And those guests who do know them will love hearing some entertaining stories they might not have heard yet.

5. Think of 3 traits with 3 stories

If you’re finding it difficult to come up with anything, a useful approach for how to write a wedding speech is to think of 3 positive defining traits or qualities of the bride or groom and recount three stories or examples that illuminate a time they exhibited these traits. These stories could be comedic, heartwarming, or both. Just make sure they are relevant and entertaining!

6. Talk about the couple

If you’re the maid of honor and have been chatting up the bride for the whole speech, part of how to write a wedding speech is to make sure at some point it circles around to the groom, too, and to the two of them as a couple.  

Recount the time you met him, or how you remember talking about him with the bride in the beginning stages of their relationship. If you don’t know the groom all that well, talk about how good they are as a couple and about how happy he makes her. 

And If you’re not a fan of the groom, this is not the time to air your grievances. Always keep it positive. 

7. Have a beginning, middle, and end

All good speeches have a good flow and take the audience along with it. 

Don’t let your speech fall flat or jumble together in a haphazard confusion of disconnected anecdotes. Give it the structure of an overarching theme, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. 

We are not talking about a novel here, just make sure there is a direction to where the speech is going, and that the destination, end, or sentiment is achieved. It doesn’t need to be Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator, but a three-act structure does help keep you grounded. Most people also follow a story easier when there is a clear direction for a story or speech. 

8. Consider your audience

The next thing to keep in mind when considering how to write a wedding speech is to make sure you consider who your audience is. 

This is not the bachelor or bachelorette party. There will be a wide range of people present from children to the elderly, and from close friends of the bride and groom to casual acquaintances and coworkers. Make sure your speech is free of any crudeness that might not be fit for such a varied audience. Also, this isn’t the time to take a shot at any of the religious cermonies.

Be considerate and keep it positive and use language everyone can relate to. 

9. Keep it short and sweet

You want your speech to be meaningful and memorable; but the wedding is not about you, and yours is not the only speech. 

No one ever complains about a speech being too short, but they do begin to grumble if it runs on too long. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind when figuring out how to write a wedding speech is to keep your speech between 2-5 minutes long. Any longer than 5 minutes and you’ll lose everyone to thoughts of cake and whether or not to Cupid Shuffle later. 

10. Add humor

Don’t be afraid to be funny! Another tip for how to write a wedding speech is that if you’ve got a lighthearted, creative, joking side, use it and add humor to your speech! Everyone likes to be entertained. 

This doesn’t mean you should scour the internet for generic wedding-themed jokes, but if you’ve got some good original material to use that helps relate a story about the bride or groom in a comedic way, do it. As long as you’re not making fun of the couple but having fun with them, jokes are great. Or you can even poke fun at yourself to illuminate a higher quality in your bestie. It’s all about making the newlyweds shine. 

If you’re creative and have other talents, use them! If you are musical, bust out your instrument and/or vocal cords and make the speech in the form of a song! Use props, and get the other guests involved! The newlyweds will feel special because you created something for them, and the guests will love joining in the fun.

11. It’s okay to be simple and meaningful

If entertaining isn’t your thing, that’s okay! Don’t force it – just be yourself. It’s okay to be simple and meaningful with your speech. Always keep in mind when you go to write a wedding speech that what’s important is that you are genuine and speak from the heart.

Well, let’s start with the obvious. The mother-son relationship. Whatever the age of the son it’s still incredibly important that they approve of the marriage and give it his blessing.

If you’re an adult son, it’s a chance for you to pay tribute to your mum as she starts this new adventure. Of course, it’s also an opportunity to tease her affectionately! You know her better than most people, so you can talk man-to-man and give the groom (or bride) advice on how to successfully co-habit with your mum (hide the chocolate and don’t try to steal the gin when she’s on a weekend away – she’ll notice!).

If you’re a mum wanting to involve younger children, you’ll inevitably be adding something special to the day. Whether your teenage son is reading out a wedding poem or your six-year-old is giving his best love advice – it will no doubt add an ‘awww’ moment and an extra special memory for everyone involved.

The Adult Son

As a proper grown-up (well, ish?), the pressure’s on.  You’re essentially doing the role of father of the bride, which you can read more about on our Father Advice Page.

The major difference is instead of talking about your mum as a child, you’ll be talking about how she copes with children – i.e. you!

The trick to this speech is to get the balance right between honouring the great relationship you and your mum have while recognising the speech is about wishing her well with her new marriage. Yes, you need to pay tribute to your wonderful mum but you also have to sincerely welcome her new partner to the family.

If you’re first on the speaker line-up then it’s your job to welcome all the guests to the occasion, but you don’t need to thank individual people for coming or namecheck half the guestlist. Don’t steal any of the newlywed’s thunder.

Your aim is simple – a few belly-laughs and possibly a few sentimental tears.

The Young Son

If your child is very young, no one is expecting a long, personalised speech. Something short to get a few ‘awws’ and chuckles is ideal.

Something simple like a funny poem is perfect and of course, you don’t have to write this yourself. There are plenty of funny wedding poems available to exploit!

Alternatively, they could read segments from a children’s book. Plenty of adults do ! Check out these wedding readings from children’s books for inspo.

If you’d prefer something original – and why not? – ask your child to write a few simple lines about what they think love means or what getting married involves. We love it when kids say fantastically daft ideas but sometimes they can be surprisingly insightful. The joy of it is, that anything works if a cute child delivers it!

Another option is to get them involved in the groom’s speech (or yours?), for example, they could hold up funny prompt cards to ‘heckle’ the groom e.g. a series of cards saying ‘Not true’ , ‘He’s fibbing’ , ‘Does anyone believe this nonsense?’ etc.

However you want to play it, it’ll add a little good-natured humour to the speeches.

The Teenage Son

For slightly older children, similar rules apply, but – of course – aged up to the appropriate level.

Many teens will be uncomfortable reading anything too soppy so find something that veers into ‘funny’ territory more than ‘emotional’. Here are some funny wedding poems we like.

The older the teenager, the more they may be able to prepare the speech themselves or work with a writing team like us to create something really special. We generally find a teenager has a ‘unique’ perspective when it comes to matters of love. We once worked with a 15-year-old son of the bride, using quotes from Star Wars to define what love really means!

Obviously, the style and length of the speech are down to the child’s discretion (though stress – no more than five minutes). Of course, it may be wise to get ‘an appropriate adult’ to check out the speech before it’s delivered on the day!

Be prepared that, on the day, whatever the age of the child, they may freeze when they’re about to stand up in front of a room full of adults. Try not to put pressure on them. They may decide to do it later.

As with anything involving children, it may not quite go to plan, but go with the flow and enjoy whatever happens!

Dad torn between son and wife after 'insulting' wedding speech, wife betrayed. AITA?

My son got married a month ago and ever since then tensions have been high with my wife and her parents. My wife and I married after the death of my first wife. Our son was 6 when she died.

But our relationship had been over for a couple of years before she passed. We had stayed legally married for a while and tried to keep up pretenses for the sake of our son. But we both met people we wanted to be with and then my first wife died.

I continued to see my wife (the woman I had met and wanted to be with) but I did not introduce her to my son for another year and I saw her far less for several months while I focused on my son and helping him through the loss of his mom.

My son was 7 when he met my wife and I admit, my wife and I married quickly. He was a few weeks shy of 8 years old. And he struggled with my wife being part of our lives. He was still in therapy but we also did some group therapy together with a different therapist.

He was respectful to her but emotionally distant. He was not affectionate and did not love her. Over time, she did take on more parental responsibility, but we didn't jump straight into that. I didn't marry her to pawn my son off on someone else like some men do. I was always engaged in my son's life and I always parented.

He always turned to his grandmother, his mom's mom. He would call her regularly and would turn to her if I wasn't around and he was upset about something. He would see her as often as he could.

And eventually, per the advice of the therapist and after talking to my wife about how she was struggling doing all the parental things but him being emotionally distant with her, I decided she should try to fill more of a friend/aunt kind of role and not that of a parent.

She wasn't okay with it at first but then admitted it would wear on her if he never returned her love or see her as a mom to him and he was clear in therapy that he didn't want her as his second mom. He wanted nobody as that.

Fast forward to the wedding and, during the toasts, my son thanked me and my wife and his grandmother. And he mentioned his mom and how she was always his number one but how after she died, his grandmother was the most important woman in his life until he met his wife. And how they both loved her.

My wife became very upset upon hearing this. She told me she wanted to leave once the speeches were done. I told her I didn't want to leave my son's wedding. She asked how I could stay when he showed how much he doesn't really value her or love her. She left. I stayed. And she ended up at her parents house.

When I got home she told me she felt abandoned and her parents told me I was a bad husband and I should have put my son in his place and told him only one living woman deserved to be declared the most important woman in his life (besides his wife) and that was my wife. They feel I should have left with her because the ceremony was over and it was just the reception. AITA?

NTA Sounds like you did things right with your son and his grief. Until the end this was a beautiful story and you should be proud. I'm sure you know that your son turning to his grandma was "normal". I think on some level you know your wife's reaction (and her parents) was not.

I do sympathize with your wife that her dreams of being his mom didn't work out, but that was naive of her. I can understand her being hurt, but her behavior isn't ok. She took on the role of an aunt/friend, which is appropriate, and she was treated as such at his wedding. I also applaud you for raising a son who spoke from the heart.

Yes, the therapist said that some kids will seek out another mom/dad after the loss of their mom or dad. But other kids, like my son, will seek a comforting presence from the family members of the lost parent. And that some kids will never possess the wish or ability to see a stepparent or a parents long time partner as another parent.

This has confirmed to me that my wife always hoped my son would change his mind or would realize he felt differently than he was saying and showing. Or maybe not hoped but believed he would.

They knew her. They cared for her. They have stories about her. They remind him of her. His grandmother makes him feel like his mother is still around for him. I don't fault your wife. But your Your wife and your in-laws are complete ah0les.

You don’t fault the wife? She’s a huge AH here. She had 20 years to come to terms with the reality of the relationship and she refused. The son didn’t ignore her at the wedding, and then she tried to pull his only parent away from his wedding. She is selfish and couldn’t be more wrong.

NTA. Your wife was thanked in his speech. He recognized her. She’s had a couple of decades to understand and accept your son being closer to his grandmother. It’s not how she hoped her stepparent relationship would work out and I understand her disappointment but there was no need to be dramatic about it and be especially hurt and make a statement by leaving, even a quiet one.

Any advice you receive from people telling you to put your son in his place at his wedding because they feel he wrongfully ranked the top two living female relatives in his life in his speech should be summarily ignored for the incredibly poor, subjective judgments they are making.

This was your son’s wedding. Your wife was being very self-centered. The number one job of all wedding guests is to not create drama. Your wife failed.

NTA. Question - do people know what your son's relationship with your wife is like? Because I see only one reason for her anger - she was embarrassed because she played the role of a loving and loved mother to the outside world, so your son's speech destroyed this image.

Yes, people know. My son's friends all know, his wife and her family know. Friends of ours know and so do both our families. This is not something that would have come as a big revelation to anyone there. Except maybe some plus ones but even then I can't be sure that's true.

NTA, But your wife sure is. She isn't his mom, she isn't, and wasn't, the most important woman in his life. Her primary relationship is with you, not your son. And the selfishness of her expecting you to walk on on your son on his wedding day because she can't accept that her relationship with you does not entitled her to a close relationship with him is ridiculous.

Your son doesn't need 'putting in his place' he is doing just fine. It sounds as though he was polite and generous enough to thank your wife, as well as you. Your wife needs to get over herself and realise that not everything is about her.

I think she owes your son and his spouse an apology, especially if she was obvious about leaving or if she or her family have been bitching publicly about this. She also owes you an apology.

Texas Pastor Josh Howerton is facing pushback for telling women that on their wedding night, brides should comply with their husbands’ sexual wishes without question. A clip of Howerton’s comments has gone viral with over 1 million views at the time of this writing.

“Stand where he tells you to stand, wear what he tells you to wear, and do what he tells you to do, and you’re gonna make him the happiest man in the world,” Howerton said before he preached a sermon that was posted to YouTube Feb. 26 . His comments drew applause and cheers from the congregation of Lakepointe Church, where Howerton serves as senior pastor.

Josh Howerton Offers ‘Gold Nugget of Advice’

During the two minutes before he started his sermon, Pastor Josh Howerton referred to “marriage night,” a recent church event that he said about 5,000 to 6,000 people attended. He mentioned his church’s commitment to building strong families and said he wanted to “drop a little gift” for people who missed marriage night by sharing “a gold nugget of advice I was given by a mentor.”

“When it comes to her wedding day, she has been planning this day her entire life,” Howerton said, addressing the men in the room and explaining his view that women have grown up looking at wedding magazines and pretending to be brides when playing dress up as girls.

“When it comes to that day, just stand where she tells you to stand, wear what she tells you to wear, and do what she tells you to do,” he said. “You’ll make her the happiest woman in the world.” Some people in the congregation clapped in response, and someone said, “Amen.”

“I got an ‘amen’,” said Howerton. “Let’s see if you ‘amen’ this.”

“Now ladies,” he continued, “when it comes to his wedding night, he has been planning this day his whole life.” The congregation laughed.

“So just stand where he tells you to stand, wear what he tells you to wear, and do what he tells you to do, and you’re gonna make him the happiest man in the world,” Howerton said as people cheered and clapped. 

“That was free! That was free,” he concluded before changing topics and beginning his sermon.

9 AI hacks that Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, Jensen Huang, and other business leaders use

• Business leaders are using AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT as the sector booms. 
• Some have tried  AI on the job , while others have played with it to write raps and translate poetry.
• Here's how nine executives from companies like Meta, Google, and Microsoft deploy the technology.

Ever since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2023, everyone's been talking about — and trying out — the hot new tech in their personal and professional lives.

That includes some of the world's most influential business leaders.

Many companies aside from OpenAI have released generative AI products with human-like capabilities to cash in on the hype. Users have been turning to the technology to save time and reach their goals.

Some workers have used ChatGPT to generate lesson plans , produce marketing materials, and write legal briefs. Others have turned to chatbots to help them lose weight , do homework, and plan vacations. Some even claimed they made money with AI.

And interest has also permeated the C-suite, with leaders just as keen to make the technology work for them. From translating poetry to creating rap songs, here's how executives from Meta, Google, Microsoft, and other major companies have personally used AI.

Nvidia's Jensen Huang said he uses Perplexity AI "almost every day."

The CEO of the chip company that makes highly coveted GPUs to power AI models uses the AI-powered question-and-answer search engine for research, he told Wired in February this year.

In the interview, he gave an example of how Perplexity can be used to learn about recent advancements in computer-aided drug discovery.

"You want to frame the overall topic so that you could have a framework," Huang told Wired. "From that framework, you could ask more and more specific questions."

"I really love that about these large language models," he said.

The CEO said he uses OpenAI's ChatGPT as well.

AMD CEO Lisa Su said she uses Microsoft's Copilot to "summarize meetings" and "track actions."

Still, Su doesn't think Microsoft's AI assistant is perfect.

"It doesn't write my emails so well," the CEO of Nvidia competitor AMD said during her SXSW keynote in March 2024. "I don't use it for that."

Microsoft has integrated Copilot into its suite of office products, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said his favorite way to use ChatGPT is to explain German philosophy and Persian poetry.

Nadella said ChatGPT helps him comprehend complicated texts from philosophers like Martin Heidegger.

"I remember my father trying to read Heidegger in his forties and struggling with it, and I have attempted it a thousand times and failed," the CEO said on a June 2023 episode of Freakonomics Radio . "But I must say going and asking ChatGPT or Bing chat to summarize Heidegger is the best way to read Heidegger."

He was also impressed by the AI chatbot's ability to translate poetry. He said his favorite prompt is asking ChatGPT to translate Rumi from Urdu into English.

"The most interesting thing about it is that it captures the depth of poetry," Nadella said on the podcast. "It somehow finds, in that latent space, meaning that's beyond just the words and the translation. That I find is just phenomenal."

Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla said he used ChatGPT to write a rap for his daughter's wedding.

"I wrote what I wanted to say to her as a speech, entered it into ChatGPT, said, 'Do rap lyrics for it,' it did, and then entered it into a music AI," the OpenAI investor posted on X, formerly Twitter, in October 2023.

"So I was able to blare it over the speakers, a personal rap song from me," Khosla added. "It extended my capability. It meant a lot to me."

He's the founder of Khosla Ventures, a VC investing in startups in AI, clean technology, and biomedicine, among other sectors.

CEO and cofounder of OpenAI Sam Altman said he uses his company's chatbot for translation and writing.

In August 2023, Altman told Bloomberg that ChatGPT was a "life saver" for translation purposes during his world tour, where he discussed the future of AI. Over three months, he visited countries like Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, India, and South Korea.

The face behind ChatGPT said his creation helps him "write faster" and "think more."

"I see the path towards, like, this being my super assistant for all of my cognitive work," he told Bloomberg.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said he used a language model to talk to the planet Pluto with his son.

In an episode of the New York Times' tech podcast " Hard Fork," Pichai said he asked LaMDA, one of the search giant's early conversational AI models, to pretend it was the planet Pluto to test its capabilities.

During one conversation, LaMDA told Pichai and his son that Pluto is "really lonely" because it's so far out in space.

"I felt sad at that point talking to it," the CEO said on the March 2023 episode of the podcast.

He also asked LaMDA what he should do for his father's 80th birthday. In response, the model suggested that he make a scrapbook.

"It's not that it's profound, but it says things and kind of sparks the imagination," he told the NYT when describing the prompt.

Google unveiled Gemini, its latest language model that could generate text and photos using prompts, in December 2023.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said he used ChatGPT to translate the Frank Sinatra song 'My Way' into Spanish.

The chairperson of Berkshire Hathaway seemed to be satisfied with the output.

"Two seconds later, you know, it comes out" and "rhymes and does all these wonderful things," Buffett told CNBC on April 2023 regarding the song.

While the billionaire said he sees the potential for ChatGPT to save time, he was skeptical about whether it could positively impact society.

"I think this is extraordinary, but I don't know if it's beneficial," he told CNBC.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said he uses ChatGPT in his personal life.

Cook didn't specify how he uses the AI chatbot. He did, however, say that he sees its potential after trying it out.

"I'm excited about it," he told CNBC in a June 2023 interview. "I think there's some unique applications for it and you can bet that it's something that we're looking at closely."

Apple appears to be lagging behind some other Big Tech players on the AI front. The iPhone maker is expected to discuss its AI projects during its June developer conference.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg built a personal AI assistant called "Jarvis" to manage different parts of his home.

Back in 2016, Jarvis controlled Zuckerberg's house's lights, appliances, temperature, music, and security systems, Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post. The CEO also said the AI assistant interacted with his phone and computer and could learn new words and concepts.

Meta rolled out Llama-2 , its large language model equivalent to OpenAI's GPT, in July 2023 to select users. Since then, the company has released AI-powered Ray-Ban Smart Glasses and AI chatbots with celebrity personas. Llama-3, its most advanced model, is still in the works.

On February 28, Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, joined 31 other media groups and filed a $2.3 billion suit against Google in Dutch court, alleging losses suffered due to the company's advertising practices.
