  • Joint & Dual Degrees

Your interests and goals may span multiple academic disciplines or areas of expertise. That is why the Stanford MBA Program empowers you to combine studies. This flexibility offers a rich and valuable academic experience.

Generally, about 20 percent of Stanford MBA students take advantage of a joint or dual degree to complement their MBA. As a student, you may also take courses in any department or graduate school at Stanford University.

Joint Degrees

Your Stanford joint degrees must be conferred simultaneously upon completion of degree requirements for both programs. While in the Stanford MBA Program, you may not pursue concurrently more than one additional degree. Learn more about joint degree programs below.

Hilary Bartlett

“It is not at all an overstatement to say that my four years in the joint JD/MBA program at Stanford have been life-changing. Committed professors and inspiring peers have challenged me to expand my vision of what is possible for myself and for the world. I am graduating with greater confidence, a clearer sense of self, and an excitement for what the future holds. Not only do I dream bigger as a result of my time at Stanford, but my dreams feel more attainable. I am leaving Stanford with so much more than the foundational skill set I was seeking.”

Owen Wurzbacher

“The GSB’s joint degree program allowed me to explore the intersection of two passions: investing and education. It provided the flexibility to study both fields and illustrated the opportunities for applying business skills to education in an informed way. Using tools developed and relationships built, I look forward to influencing the education field and inspiring a love of learning in young people during my career.”

Dual Degrees

Interested in an additional discipline that is not represented in our joint degree programs? You can pursue a master’s degree from another Stanford program along with your MBA. While in the Stanford MBA program, you may not pursue concurrently more than one additional degree.

You may pursue a dual degree with any graduate program at Stanford University. Candidates must apply to and be accepted by the other program separately, and then notify Stanford GSB. You may apply concurrently to both programs or apply to the dual degree program during your first year as an MBA student; some graduate programs also permit you to apply in your second year. As with joint degrees, you may only pursue one additional degree while in the MBA program.

Justin Norden

“After starting medical school at Stanford, I decided to pursue an MBA at the GSB to develop the skills to become a leader at the intersection of health care, technology, and medicine. Business school has not only taught me many valuable leadership skills, but also opened my eyes to think about problems in completely new ways. The best part about the GSB, however, has been getting to know and learn from so many wonderful classmates.”

Study Opportunities Outside Stanford

Stanford MBA students may also pursue degrees with certain professional schools at other universities. Check with each school regarding its policy and timeline.

Eligible Degree Programs & Requirements

  • Harvard Kennedy School: MPA, MPA-ID, or MPP
  • Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS): MA
  • Princeton School of Public and International Affairs: MPA
  • Yale Law School: JD
  • Yale Medical School: MD

You may enroll in either a joint or dual degree with another graduate program at Stanford or a degree from an external university, but not both.

Degree Requirements

Paths to completion by school, harvard kennedy school, johns hopkins sais, and princeton school of public and international affairs.

You must spend five quarters of full-time study at Stanford GSB. The combined degree programs must be completed in one of the following timelines. Note that some programs may require a particular academic path in order to successfully complete both degrees.

Yale Medical School and Yale Law School

You must spend five quarters of full-time study at Stanford GSB and complete at least one year at YMS or YLS first. Consult with YMS or YLS for timeline requirements.

Things to Consider

Benefits of these experiences.

  • Completing two degrees in a shorter amount of time while also saving on tuition
  • Expanding one’s network outside of Stanford GSB
  • Enhancing marketability for certain career opportunities
  • Personalizing and individualizing your academic experience to meet your specific learning goals
  • Limited capacity for electives that don’t count toward either degree program
  • Higher quarterly enrollment load compared to peers pursuing the MBA only
  • Possibly not graduating with your MBA cohort (depending upon your program)
  • Additional moving expenses and logistical challenges if pursuing a program in a different location
  • Not being able to participate in specific activities or courses that occur during a quarter that you are away from Stanford GSB (e.g., Arbuckle Leadership Fellows, View From The Top Leaders, Peer Advisors, TALK coach, Leadership Perspectives course assistants)

What is an MBA Dual Degree?

An MBA dual degree program, also known as a double degree program, is an educational program that allows students to pursue two separate degrees simultaneously. In a dual degree program, students typically study two different academic disciplines and earn two distinct degrees, often a master’s degree or Ph.D. This way, students can gain expertise in multiple areas and apply certain credits to both degrees.

Our MBA dual degree option allows students to combine an M.S. or Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Tech Colleges of Engineering, Computing, Design, and Liberal Arts.

Pairing a Georgia Tech graduate degree with an MBA gives students a competitive advantage and a unique blend of skills to accelerate their career growth. By bringing together advanced curriculum across multiple disciplines, the MBA dual degree programs cultivate a new generation of business leader.

MBA dual degree programs allow students to count 15 credit hours from their M.S./Ph.D. courses toward their MBA elective requirements, reducing the time required to complete both degrees. Students can complete an MBA with 39 credit hours instead of 54 credit hours.

Program Structure

Students interested in pursuing an MBA in addition to another graduate degree within the Georgia Tech Colleges of Computing, Design, Engineering, and Liberal Arts have two program format options. Both options allow students to reduce the time and cost to complete their MBA.

Full-time MBA Dual Degree Option Students who plan to pursue an MBA concurrently with another graduate degree should apply to the Full-time MBA program . This is the only way to pursue an MBA through the dual degree option if a student will be pursuing an MBA while also completing another graduate degree.

Evening MBA Dual Degree Option Students who plan to complete an MBA after completing another graduate degree are eligible for the Evening MBA program . This structure is designed for those who will be working while completing an MBA. To be eligible for the reduced time and cost of the MBA dual-degree option, students must apply to the Evening MBA program before graduating from their other degree program and start the MBA program after completing their other degree program.

Students who have already graduated from another graduate program are eligible to apply to the Full-time and Evening MBA programs but are not eligible for the dual degree option.

M.D./MBA Option

The Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) also have a partnership to offer an M.D./MBA program as a dual degree option.

The M.D./MBA with Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) program allows students to count 15 credit hours from their MSM M.D. degree courses toward their MBA elective requirements, reducing the cost and time required to complete the MBA degree.

Students interested in this option should read more on the M.D./MBA page .

Dual Degree Eligibility

Students who have been admitted to an M.S. or Ph.D. program in the Georgia Tech Colleges of Computing, Design, Engineering, and Liberal Arts are eligible to pursue the dual degree option. This includes students in interdisciplinary programs between colleges, such as the M.S. Analytics and Quantitative & Computational Finance (QCF) programs.

Students should apply to the MBA program before graduating from their other graduate degree program. Students who have already graduated from another graduate program are eligible to apply to the Full-time and Evening MBA programs but are not eligible for the dual degree option.

It is recommended students complete most M.S./Ph.D. courses before starting the MBA program. However, students can complete the MBA requirements in other ways that best fit their schedules. Ph.D. / dual degree students will work with their MBA academic advisor to decide how to best complete the MBA with their other degree requirements.

If you are not a current Georgia Tech student, you will need to complete a separate application for each program. Only one application can be open at a time, so you will need to submit one before starting the other. In some cases, it may be beneficial to start the non-MBA degree program before applying to the MBA program.

Application and Admissions

Students who have been admitted to another Georgia Tech graduate degree program can reuse letters of recommendation from their application. The MBA program accepts either the GMAT or GRE. If Georgia Tech has already received a student's valid GRE score, they do not need to resubmit a test score.

Contact us to learn more about applying to the MBA program under the dual degree option, the GMAT and GRE test-optional policy, and an application fee waiver.

Full-time MBA Application Requirements

Applicants for the Full-time MBA program can apply by any of the application deadlines . However, applying by Round 1 guarantees a decision by the end of the calendar year. If admitted, students may begin taking select MBA electives  on a space available basis during the spring semester prior to officially beginning in the fall.

See Application Requirements

Evening MBA Application Requirements

Applicants for the Evening MBA program can apply by any of the application deadlines . Applicants are only eligible for the dual degree option if they apply to the Evening MBA program before completing their other graduate degree. However, they must start the Evening MBA program after completing their other graduate degree. Applicants who plan to complete the MBA concurrently with another graduate degree are only eligible for the Full-time MBA program.

MBA tuition is higher than the standard graduate tuition rate at Georgia Tech. The tuition amount above the standard graduate tuition rate is the "MBA differential.’" The total tuition for any semester that a dual degree student (without a graduate assistantship) is enrolled in the Full-time MBA program will be the standard graduate tuition rate plus the MBA differential.  The MBA differential will apply for a maximum of three semesters, even if the student requires more than three semesters to complete the MBA requirements. Dual degree students who are granted graduate assistantships from departments outside the Scheller College of Business will receive their tuition waivers from those departments and will be responsible for paying an adjusted MBA differential for semesters enrolled in the MBA program, for a maximum of four semesters. Students who have been granted these non-Scheller graduate assistantships should use these steps to view the tuition rate they will be charged during MBA program enrollment:

  • Visit the  Bursar and Treasury Services website .
  • Select the term of enrollment in the MBA program.
  • Select the “Graduate Assistantship Rates” link.
  • Your per semester tuition rate (the differential) is listed next to "Master in Business Administration (Dual Degree)."

Tuition rates can change each academic year, so you should check the website noted above to confirm tuition for each term of MBA program enrollment. Please check with your graduate assistantship supervisor to ensure you will be allowed to retain your graduate assistantship while enrolled as a dual degree student with the MBA program.

If you're completing an MBA after graduating from your other graduate degree, standard Full-time MBA or Evening MBA tuition will apply. You must apply to the MBA program prior to completing your other graduate degree in order to be eligible for the reduced credit hours through the dual degree option.

MBA/M.S. and MBA/Ph.D. Dual Degree FAQs

Program information, if you are unable to find the answer to a specific question or wish to speak with someone directly, feel free to contact us online or call 404.894.8722., who can pursue a dual degree.

The MBA dual degree option is offered to selected students enrolled in M.S. and Ph.D. programs in the Colleges of Computing, Design, Engineering, and Liberal Arts. More specifically, the dual degree may be attractive to M.S. and Ph.D. students who wish to pursue a technology management career outside of academia and help them progress eventually into senior management roles.

Is this a new degree?

No. The M.S., Ph.D., and MBA programs are all currently offered at Georgia Tech, and their degree requirements remain unchanged. The M.S./MBA and Ph.D./MBA dual degree simply allows students to count courses taken in other Colleges to their MBA degree.

Why does Georgia Tech have an M.S./MBA and Ph.D./MBA offering?

The world of business is being transformed by technology at an increasing rate. Innovations in the technology sector are transforming the global economy and technology companies have become the employers of choice for many of our graduates. Simultaneously, companies in traditional sectors such as consumer goods, finance, retail, and transportation are using technology in innovative ways to reach new customers and improve operational efficiency.

This new environment needs a new type of leader with deep technology knowledge, business acumen, and leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills. We believe Georgia Tech is uniquely positioned to develop such leaders, and the dual degree offering provides us the opportunity to do that.

If I drop out of my other graduate program, am I still eligible for a dual degree?

If you have been admitted to the MBA program and then drop out of your other graduate program, you will need to complete the 54 MBA credit hours for the MBA degree. You have to complete your other graduate degree to also receive an MBA at the reduced 39 credit hours. If you are not pursuing another graduate degree, you are not eligible for the reduced 39 MBA credit hours.

MBA Curriculum and Schedule

Which of my m.s./ph.d. courses are eligible to also count toward the mba dual degree.

For students who have been admitted to the MBA program for a dual degree, 15 credit hours from the student’s other degree will automatically be applied toward the MBA.

I’ve already taken some MBA elective courses. Can I count these toward the MBA dual degree?

If you are NOT applying these MBA courses to your other graduate degree, yes, you can count up to nine credit hours toward your 18 credit hours of MBA electives. If you ARE applying these MBA courses to your other graduate degree, you can count them as the 15 credit hours that double count; you will still need to take 18 credit hours of additional MBA electives. Only 15 credit hours can count toward both degrees.

What MBA courses can I take if I have not yet been admitted to the MBA program?

View a list of MBA electives   that can be taken without core prerequisites. If you are not currently an MBA student, you will need to wait for any major restrictions to be removed toward the end of phase I registration or during the first week of classes.

Can I take MBA courses during the summer?

If you have been admitted and paid your deposit to the Full-time MBA program as a dual degree student, you can request to take MBA electives during the summer. However, current Evening MBA students have priority for summer courses. You will need to contact the MBA program office to request permits to take these courses. Full-time MBA students must take all core classes during the day with the Full-time MBA cohort.

If you are an Evening MBA dual degree student, you will NOT be able to take summer courses.

Can I take core MBA courses in the spring or summer?

Almost all Full-time MBA core courses are only taught in the fall; this is the only time they can be taken. Additionally, a select few MBA core courses are only taught in the spring. All of these core courses must be taken as part of the Full-time MBA cohort.

Can I take more MBA electives than the 18 hours required for a dual degree?

Yes, you can take more MBA electives than what is required for a dual degree.

Do I have to complete a summer internship?

The summer internship is not required, but it is recommended for MBA students because it helps them gain experience in a desired field before interviewing for full-time positions.

I want to register for an MBA elective, but it says there are major restrictions. What do I do?

If you are not currently an MBA student, you will need to wait for major restrictions to be removed toward the end of phase I registration or during the first week of classes. Major restrictions will only be removed for   select MBA electives  that do not have a prerequisite.

Admission Process

When during my other graduate degree should i apply to the mba program.

You should apply to the MBA program during the year before you plan to start MBA core classes the next fall. For most students, this will be during their final year of their other degree courses because the following year, they will focus on MBA courses. View the Full-time MBA application deadlines .

You may begin taking   MBA electives  that can be taken without core prerequisites in the spring after/while you apply, prior to starting MBA core classes in the fall. Tip: If you apply by the Round 1 deadline, you will be guaranteed a decision by the end of the calendar year. Then you will already know whether you have been admitted and want to move forward with taking MBA electives during the spring semester.

Do I need to tell my other program that I am also pursuing an MBA?

If you will be completing the MBA while still completing your other graduate degree, yes, your sponsor/advisor must give permission for you to also pursue an MBA. Students should also check with their funding agency regarding restrictions or conditions for funding.

If I’ve already completed my M.S./Ph.D., can I be considered for the dual degree option?

No, in order to be eligible for a dual degree, you must apply to the MBA program and be admitted BEFORE completing your other graduate degree. You can complete your M.S./Ph.D. before starting the MBA program, as long as you were admitted to the MBA program before you completed that degree.

Can I defer my MBA admission and start the program a little later?

You can defer your admission for one year after being admitted to MBA; this allows M.S./Ph.D. students to gain one additional year of work experience before beginning the MBA program. If you do plan to defer one year, please make this clear during the admission process.

How important is work experience?

For MBA admission, we recommend at least two years of professional post-undergraduate work experience. This is more important for M.S. students than for Ph.D. students for career placement because many companies recognize Ph.D.-level research as applicable work experience.

We realize many graduate students begin their program immediately after completing their undergraduate degree. If you do not have at least two years of professional work experience, you will need to show experience on your resume that can count as professional work experience. For example, co-op experience and graduate-level projects working with real companies may apply. Work experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. You may want to take advantage of the optional essay in the MBA application to give examples of professional work experience.

What is different about the dual degree admission process vs. the regular MBA admission process?

The admission process is generally the same. However, if you are already at Georgia Tech, we will have access to some of your required application materials. For example, if Georgia Tech already has your official GRE score, you do not need to resubmit this. Official transcripts should also already be on file and do not need to be submitted. In addition, you do not need any new letters of recommendation; we can use these letters from your previous application.

That being said, an additional professional reference can help you have a more competitive application, as many dual degree applicants only used academic references for their first application.

Can I apply to the MBA program using my previous Georgia Tech application?

No, you will still need to complete the MBA application because there are different components than your previous application. However, if Georgia Tech already has your valid GRE score, you do not need to resubmit this. In addition, you do not need any new letters of recommendation; we can use these letters from your previous application.

Tuition and Funding

Are dual degree students eligible for mba funding opportunities.

If you do not have funding from another program, you will be eligible for merit-based MBA fellowship funding opportunities. You should apply by the Round 1 or Round 2 deadline for priority funding consideration.

How does MBA tuition work with my other graduate tuition?

MBA tuition is higher than the standard graduate tuition rate at Georgia Tech; we refer to this amount as the MBA differential. The MBA differential is assessed differently for Full-time and Evening MBA students. Full-time MBA differential is charged per semester, and Evening MBA differential is charged per credit hour.

I am not a current Georgia Tech student. Can I apply for the dual degree program?

Yes. You will need to complete a separate application for each program. Only one application can be open at a time, so you will need to submit one before starting the other. In some cases, it may be beneficial to start the non-MBA degree program before applying to the MBA program.

Joint or Dual Degree Programs

Student with laptop on stairs

Combining a full-time MBA program with another full-time graduate program of study.

Are you an undergraduate thinking about graduate education or MBA? Or a nurse considering a formal education in healthcare management to reenter the medical field in a different role? Joint and dual degree options present a great opportunity to combine areas of study and broaden your knowledge base.

Here are a few facts on these programs to help you determine if this may be the right path for you:

  • Time Commitment – Most joint or dual degree programs take between three to four years to complete as a full-time student. In many cases, you can complete a dual or joint degree in less time than if you pursued the degrees separately, since some courses can fulfill requirements for both. Many universities also offer programs that allow you to begin your MBA or graduate coursework while completing your undergraduate studies.
  • Your Peers – With numerous options and programs available, you’ll find undergraduates, graduate students and seasoned professionals in your courses.
  • Learning Opportunities – There are a wide variety of joint and dual degree programs at most schools. Some of the more common degrees to combine with an MBA include, Healthcare Administration, Public Policy/Public Administration, Engineering, Technology and International Studies. But the list doesn’t stop there. A dual MBA and Law degree is also common, but most schools will require separate programs to complete.
  • Your Experience – In most cases, your two selected programs will be taught at the same school, but some do have cooperative relationships with other universities.

Is a Joint or Dual Degree right for you?

Where you are in your career or education, will likely play a big role in your decision to pursue a joint or dual degree. If you’re an undergraduate, you’ll need to start considering these options early in your bachelor’s program. Depending on your areas of interest, some coursework may overlap and help minimize your time and financial commitment. Talk to your advisor to learn more about the programs at your university that match your career and personal goals.

If you’re already in the workforce, you’ll need to decide if you are financially able to be out of the workforce for up to four years to complete the most common programs. Also realize that during your absence, it can be difficult to maintain your current career path and skills.

With a broad knowledge base, combined with a concentration in specific areas of expertise, joint and dual degree programs can open up a world of opportunities today and in the future.

Joint Programs

Students collaborating

A Cross-Yale Education

Yale offers the opportunity to pursue an MBA in combination with a degree from Yale Law School, Yale School of Medicine, Yale School of the Environment, Yale School of Architecture, or another of the University's world-class graduate programs. Yale's joint-degree programs are intended to prepare leaders who will bring a broad understanding and analytical thinking to whatever industry they work in.

In most Yale joint-degree programs, students spend one year enrolled full-time at Yale SOM, during which they complete the integrated MBA core curriculum; one or more years enrolled in the other program; and one year taking courses in both programs.

The two degrees are usually completed in one year less than if they were taken sequentially. Both degrees are awarded at the end of the entire course of study.

During the full year that joint-degree students spend at Yale SOM, they participate fully in the Career Development Office's workshops, recruiting events, and training sessions, and the CDO's resources are available to them thereafter.

Joint-degree applicants must apply to and be admitted to both programs independently. In general, we recommend applying to both programs simultaneously in order to have a more integrated learning experience throughout both programs. In some cases, applicants may also apply to another graduate program during their first year at Yale SOM, or apply to Yale SOM during their first year in another graduate program (or during the second year of a four-year program). Please review the requirements for the specific program you are interested in, as they vary.

Joint Degrees Within Dartmouth College

The Geisel School of Medicine and the Tuck School of Business offer students an opportunity to pursue combined MD/MBA degrees that can be completed in either five or six years. In a time of tremendous change in health care, there is a growing need for leaders with expertise in both medicine and management. This joint-degree program is designed to open pathways for leadership roles in diverse areas and industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech, health care related entrepreneurial ventures, governmental health programs, health related nonprofits, hospital management, HMO management, large practice management, health care policy formation, and medical school administration, to name a few. Candidates for the joint degree must complete the separate admission and financial aid application processes at both the Geisel School and Tuck. There is no formula for admission to the combined program. Decisions are based on a combination of the following factors: academic excellence, leadership ability, accomplishments, interpersonal skills, and diversity. Although almost all Tuck students have work experience before they enroll, this is not a prerequisite for admission to this joint-degree program. It is recommended that applicants apply to Tuck during their second year at Geisel.

The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) is dedicated to improving health care through education, research, policy reform, leadership improvement, and communication with patients and the public. TDI's Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum is designed to provide every student with the fundamental skills, knowledge base, and philosophical foundation in health policy and clinical practice, with specific attention paid to public health, clinical/health services research, or health care leadership. The MPH/MBA joint degree offered with the Tuck School prepares graduates to take on leadership positions in both the public and private sectors of the health care industry.

The PhD/MBA joint degree program offers the unique opportunity for PhD students at Dartmouth College to finish off their training with management education. The joint degree aims to produce individuals who are not only thoroughly trained in a scientific discipline but also possess fundamental business and entrepreneurial skills. The program is currently only available to PhD students at Dartmouth. Students must apply to and be admitted to the MBA program. The PhD experience will be counted as post-bachelors degree work experience. Matriculating students must enter with the regular Tuck class in the fall and complete the required first-year Tuck core curriculum. Students are expected to participate in an internship during the summer between their first and second Tuck years, to reinforce the MBA experience. Courses taken during the PhD program will be counted as the equivalent of one term's worth of electives. While application and admission to the MBA program can occur at any point while enrolled in the PhD program, it's recommended that students apply in the third or fourth year of their program. Students are encouraged to meet with advisors for the PhD/MBA Program, including deans Joe Hall at Tuck, Ian Baker of Thayer, or Kerry Landers of the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. It is important that PhD students show strong academic ability as well as demonstrated potential for leadership, and they should be able to articulate well why the MBA degree will help them achieve their goals.

Students interested in tailoring their experience to gain both the management skills taught at the Tuck School of Business and the technical skills taught at the Thayer School of Engineering will benefit from this joint degree. This program is intended to develop leaders for careers that combine engineering/technology and business management. It is appropriate for students with an undergraduate degree in, or pre-Tuck experience in, engineering or science. Students can complete both degrees in a total of eight terms (including one summer). Candidates must complete the separate admission and financial aid application processes at each school. It is recommended that applicants apply to Thayer during their first year at Tuck.

Dual Degrees with Other Institutions

The three-year MBA/MA in International Relations dual degree program between the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and the Tuck School of Business has been designed to prepare students for careers that combine international relations and business management.  The program is particularly appropriate for students who are seeking management positions within international corporations, financial institutions, economic and development institutions and government agencies.  The need is clear for individuals in these positions to have a sophisticated understanding of both international affairs and management issues.

The three-year MBA/MALD dual degree program between the Fletcher School at Tufts University and the Tuck School of Business is also designed to prepare students for careers that combine international relations and business management. The program is particularly appropriate for students who are seeking management positions within international corporations, financial institutions, economic and development institutions and government agencies.  The need is clear for individuals in these positions to have a sophisticated understanding of both international affairs and management issues.  Note: Tuck also has an exchange program with the Fletcher School (see Exchange Programs ).

The MBA/MCEP dual degree with nearby Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS) enables students to earn the two degrees concurrently. Climate change, wildlife protection, and alternative energy are just a few of the critical issues facing the world today. Vermont Law and Graduate School and its Master of Climate and Environmental Policy program are leading the movement to address these issues. The MCEP program gives students a comprehensive knowledge of the policies shaping the solutions to these problems and prepares graduates for leadership positions in the public and private sectors. Experiential learning opportunities with state and federal agencies, advocacy groups, and international organizations ensure that MCEP graduates are prepared for real-world situations the first day on the job. VLGS courses are delivered either on campus or online.

MBA/MPA AND MBA/MPA/ID

The MBA/MPA and MBA/MPA/ID (Master in Public Administration in International Development) dual degrees between the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Tuck School of Business are designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of established professionals seeking further leadership responsibilities in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors, and to prepare the next generation of leaders in international development. Dual degree candidates must complete the entire Tuck core curriculum as well as three semesters at the Kennedy School.

The MBA/MPP dual degree between the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Tuck School of Business prepares students to understand complex policy problems and to craft concrete solutions. In addition to completing the full-year core curriculum plus two terms at Tuck, MBA/MPP candidates are also required to complete the full-year core curriculum at the Kennedy School, plus one semester (including the Policy Analysis Exercise).  Candidates in this dual degree program can apply their core training, policy interests, and functional skills to roles and organizations across the public and nonprofit sectors.

PhD/MBA Program

The Wake Forest University PhD/MBA program is dedicated to training and research at the interface between science andbusiness to unleash the power and potential of technology for the benefit of society.

A large proportion of Ph.D. graduates work in the private sector in positions that use the skills acquired during their graduate training. But in addition to the scholarship and rigor that makes the Ph.D. a world model, there is a need for a broader range of skills for success in a changing employment climate. The Wake Forest University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the  Schools of Business , has initiated an innovative course of study leading to the PhD/MBA. The Wake Forest PhD/MBA program is the first program of its kind in the nation, and the first to produce students with the joint degree (see testimonials from some of our graduates, below).

The World Can Change at the Intersection of Disciplines

Uniting science and management, the PhD/MBA program is preparing a new generation of leaders for the emerging fields of technology. Our mission is focused, providing education and research training leading to beneficial uses for the rapidly emerging discoveries in the sciences, and preparing students for industry or academic leadership. Multidisciplinary knowledge is indispensable in the development of new products and processes and in the translation of biomedical advances to patients and the global market. As the first graduate program in the nation offering management training with the Ph.D., we are dedicated to capturing the brightest minds and providing them with the scientific and management expertise needed to foster the technology infrastructure of the nation.

An Innovative and Efficient Curriculum

The PhD/MBA program is a synthesis of curricula from the Graduate School and the Evening MBA Program of the Schools of Business, with specialized course work and opportunities for industrial and business internships. The joint program is open to new and current students in all PhD-granting programs across all Wake Forest campuses. Students take from 4-6 years to complete the joint program, depending on the nature of the graduate research undertaken in the home program. The first year of the curriculum will provide students with a core base of knowledge in the core competencies of the home graduate program. At the end of the second year, and before beginning MBA course work, the student must take and pass examinations that will admit him/her to candidacy for the PhD. A student enrolling in the PhD/MBA program would have 5-6 semesters of evening MBA courses added to the graduate degree requirements. Opportunities for industrial projects and internships are possible after ascent to PhD candidacy and during the MBA coursework phase. The PhD and MBA degrees will be awarded simultaneously at the completion of all requirements for both degrees.

Apply Online

Students wishing to enroll in the combined program apply to and meet the respective admissions requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business. Admission to the MBA portion of the program occurs separately after gaining admission to the home graduate program, and after securing appropriate approval from the home program for participation in the joint program. In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the  Schools of Business  requires completion of the GMAT (General Management Aptitude Test). The Schools of Business will also accept the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) as a replacement for the GMAT for admissions.

In this article, we’ll talk mostly about blended or dual degree programs. These types of programs allow students to work toward simultaneously earning a masters and doctoral degree in two different but complementary majors, such as business and medicine or business and law.

Here are some advantages of combined masters and PhD programs:

  • Combine complementary courses from two distinct graduate degree majors
  • Allow you to earn two degrees within a reasonable time frame
  • Help prepare you for a specific professional niche

The following are some disadvantages of combined masters and PhD programs:

  • Can take longer to complete than a masters degree program alone
  • Can include very different specialty courses designed for distinct majors
  • Might involve coordinating a study plan with two independent departments

Most dual masters and doctorate degree programs online are designed to help you earn the two degrees in a reasonable time frame.

Common Masters and Doctorate Combined Programs

Masters and Doctorate Combined Programs

Many combined degree programs culminate in a professional doctorate and are designed to equip students to work in complex professional settings. A professional doctorate tends to emphasize more practical skills for the workplace.

MBA / Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

In this dual program, you’ll learn business administration fundamentals while you gain expertise in a range of concepts, practices, and regulatory standards related to nursing.

This combination can help position you for senior management roles or for positions on HR teams with large hospitals or managed care networks.

MBA / Doctor of Medicine (MD)

This graduate degree combination can qualify you to practice medicine while also providing you with lots of business administration skills.

Professionals with these qualifications might work in governance roles at a hospital, help design and manage innovative managed healthcare business models, or work in the development and sale of medical technologies.

MBA / Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Dual masters and PsyD programs combining a specialization in industrial and organizational psychology with a masters degree in business administration can open doors to a range of senior management opportunities in large organizations.

Alternately, professionals might specialize in psychotherapy and use their clinical qualifications and business savvy to manage or develop psychotherapy service networks. They may also fill executive leadership roles with mental health service providers.

MBA / Juris Doctor (JD)

MBA / Juris Doctor

Students in this dual degree program often specialize in business law, accessing and blending course offerings from both MBA and JD graduate programs.

This combined program can create an advanced business law degree pathway for future jobs in the business sector or in private law firms.

Master of Public Policy (MPP) / Juris Doctor (JD)

Legal hurdles and legislative complexities can make or break public policy initiatives. A dual MPP and JD program can be a strategic way to develop expertise doing legal analysis work with regard to developing or improving public policy.

With this double-edged expertise, you might pursue any number of roles in public interest law, legislative work, or public policy analysis and advocacy.

Master of Science (MS) / Medical Doctor (MD)

With preparation in an MS and MD combined degree program, you can equip yourself to practice medicine while also learning specialized science research skills.

Depending on your areas of specialization, you might be positioned to work in medical research and development or with organizations engaged in testing, evaluating, monitoring, or regulating new medical practices or products.

Master of Public Health (MPH) / Medical Doctor (MD)

Master’s and PhD Admissions Requirements

Master’s and PhD Admissions

Admissions requirements will vary by school and program, but most dual masters and PhD programs online require criteria similar to these:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Satisfactory college GPA
  • GRE or GMAT scores (if required)
  • LSAT or MCAT scores (for JD and MD programs, when required)
  • Letters of recommendation

Depending on the major, graduate degree programs may also require the completion of specified prerequisites in math or science as well as other academic or professional requirements.

Accreditation

Masters PhD Combined Programs Accreditation

It can be beneficial to stick with fully accredited schools and programs. If you anticipate pursuing careers in fields that involve professional licensing, accreditation may be a precondition for licensing. Fields that typically require licensing include law, medicine, psychology, nursing, education, and public health.

Accreditation can also be a precondition for some forms of financial aid. Organizations such as the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) have more information about accreditation and finding accredited schools.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Masters PhD Combined Programs Financial Aid

Many graduate students rely on financial aid for help with tuition and other upfront costs. If you plan to apply for need-based aid, you can start by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .

Common forms of aid include state and federal education grants. If you’re eligible, you can also  apply for any number of need-based or merit-based scholarships. Some employers also offer tuition assistance programs.

Many financial aid offers also include student loans. Terms of loan offers and other awards can vary, so it’s helpful to review all financial aid offers carefully.

Can You Get Your Masters and PhD at the Same Time?

masters and doctorate programs

Yes, in most programs you’ll pursue your masters and doctorate together, taking courses that are part of an already blended curriculum or enrolling in courses that straddle two departments.

If you’re in the type of program where you’re pursuing just one major, you’ll typically fulfill your masters requirements first as a qualifying step for proceeding with the PhD requirements.

When you’re pursuing two complementary majors in a dual degree program, you’ll generally be working toward both degrees at the same time.

Can You Leave a PhD Program with a Masters?

PhD Program with Masters

You can leave a PhD program with a masters if you fulfill the required academic and administrative steps for doing so. These requirements can vary by school and program.

Some single-track PhD programs make earning a masters degree programmatic for their PhD candidates, usually awarding the masters after comprehensive qualifying exams. In dual programs, your masters and PhD courses can belong to complementary but distinct academic disciplines, which may complicate matters.

In these cases, you may want to talk to an academic advisor about options that would allow you to exit the doctoral track while still earning a masters in the other major.

Do You Need a Masters to Get a PhD?

PhD programs without masters degrees

There are many PhD programs that do not require any prior master’s degree for admissions.

If you’ve already earned a bachelor’s degree, you may find options to enroll in online master degree, PhD, or dual degree programs . Admissions requirements can vary by school and by major in some cases. Some PhD programs offer you the opportunity to earn a masters along the way.

Does Your PhD Have to Be the Same as Your Masters?

PhD program after earning a masters

If you are applying to a PhD program after earning a masters, your masters does not typically have to be in the same academic discipline. Requirements can vary, though, by school and program.

What will matter are the more general admissions requirements or prerequisites. You may have more admissions hurdles to overcome if you don’t have the right prerequisite training before you apply, regardless of what kind of masters degree you have.

Holding a masters degree, even if it’s in another discipline, may still help you demonstrate that you’re a motivated and capable PhD candidate. There are also many joint masters and PhD programs that combine separate but complementary disciplines.

What Can You Do with a Joint Master and PhD Degree?

Joint Master and PhD Degree

Receiving training from dual graduate programs can give you a strong foundation for senior research, management, or leadership positions. There is a vast range of career paths you can take, depending on your specializations and degree combinations.

For example, graduates who pair a masters in public health or science with an MD may pursue positions as epidemiologists or medical scientists respectively. Those interested in business law may want to combine their JD with a Master of Business Administration, making them more marketable for prospective future clients or firms.

Getting a PhD can also qualify you for jobs in postsecondary teaching and research. You may join a PhD in your desired field with a masters in education or teaching to boost your credentials.

Professional doctorates are often designed for professionals who want to enhance their practical skills and advance in their field. They may even pursue top executive roles.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Combined Masters-PhD Degree Online?

Masters-PhD Degree Online

It’s common for a dual program to take 4 to 6 years to complete. Time to completion can vary significantly by program, especially when it comes to dissertations, other capstone projects, or supervised field work requirements.

All that said, many of today’s combined masters and doctoral programs online have highly targeted course programs to help you finish more quickly. Some dual masters and doctorate online programs are designed to help you complete most or all of your requirements in as little as 3 to 4 years if you study full-time, year-round.

Is a Masters and PhD Dual Degree Worth It?

Masters and PhD Dual Degree

Yes, a masters and PhD dual degree is worth it for many students. A dual degree program can help equip you with credentials for jobs that require complex management, consulting, or leadership roles.

When considering a dual program option, you may want to plan backwards. In other words, you might ask yourself if the careers that most interest you require specialized knowledge across two different domains.

Some examples include business law or healthcare management. Business law straddles business and law, and a career in healthcare management benefits from knowledge of both business administration and healthcare practices and services.

Dual degree programs can be especially beneficial if your sights are set on careers requiring combined skills.

Earn Dual Degrees

Being able to earn two degrees at once is another way to reframe your future and nurture your intellectual curiosity. There are few better places to do that than University of California, Berkeley, where Haas students can take advantage of other top-ranked degree programs to combine an MBA with law, engineering, public health, or international area studies.

To empower the next generation of sustainability and climate leaders, the Haas School of Business and the Rausser College of Natural Resources partner to offer a concurrent degree program leading to an MBA and a Master of Climate Solutions (MCS).

The MBA/MCS degree is designed for early-career professionals who plan to take their careers to a higher level of business leadership, grounded in understanding of sustainability and climate change challenges and opportunities. The program aims to develop critical skills and knowledge in climate data science, carbon accounting, and lifecycle analysis, as well as technological and nature-based solutions.

Students in the MBA/MCS cohort will spend the first year completing MBA core coursework at Haas before moving to classes at Rausser. All MBA/MCS students will participate in a semester-long capstone program that gives students the opportunity to partner with real organizations across business, government, and non-profit sectors.

This innovative program prepares students to be change agents and leaders in businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.

Curriculum Overview

Program Requirements

During the first year, students will enroll in the MBA core courses alongside their fellow full-time MBA classmates. While enrolled in the core, they'll also participate in the Master of Climate Solutions Colloquium, which is a year-long series of speakers, outings, and events. The colloquium, which will feature guest speakers including leaders in sustainable business, as well as site visits to businesses and public agencies, is designed to create connections between the MBA core materials and climate topics during the first year.

In their second year, MBA/MCS students will fully immerse themselves in the Master of Climate Solutions program, together with MCS standalone students, creating a strong cohort. They will take both business and climate/sustainability courses and a project-based capstone course.

The capstone and the colloquium, which are required for both standalone MCS and MBA/MCS students, are explicitly designed to tie together content, themes, and skills that cut across business and climate/sustainability, to ensure practical application of core ideas, and to facilitate contact between students and practitioners. The capstone projects will address a practical climate-related challenge or opportunity faced by a real organization, including private businesses. This experience will leverage the core climate skills and knowledge taught in the MCS, as well as the leadership and business skills emphasized in the MBA. Students will apply their learned skills to generate a solution to a real climate challenge.

During their final semester, students will focus on completing 12 additional units of MBA electives. MBA/MCS students will be positioned to take advantage of the opportunities in both Rausser College and Haas School of Business for a full five semesters. Unlike the MBA only peers, the MBA/MCS students get to have two summers of internships and other experiences.

Dual and Joint Programs

Main navigation.

Students interested in completing more than one graduate degree may be interested in our MD/PhD, dual MBA/MS or joint JD/PHD/MS programs. Please contact [email protected] for questions regarding any of the below programs.

Students interested in a career-oriented toward bioengineering and medicine can pursue the combined MD/PhD program. Stanford provides two ways to earn an MD/PhD:

  • US citizens and permanent residents can apply to the  Medical Scientist Training Program  and can be accepted with funding from both the MD and PhD programs with stipend/tuition. They can then select a bioengineering laboratory for their PhD.
  • Students not admitted to the Medical Scientist Training Program must apply and be admitted separately to the MD program and the PhD program of their choice.

The PhD degree is administered by the Department of Bioengineering. To be formally admitted as a PhD degree candidate in this combined degree program, the student must apply through normal departmental channels and must have earned or have plans to earn an MS in bioengineering or another engineering discipline at Stanford or another university. The MS requires 45 units of coursework, which consists of core bioengineering courses, technical electives, seminars and 6 unrestricted units. In addition, students will be expected to pass the Department of Bioengineering PhD qualifying examination. For students fulfilling the full MD requirements who earned their master’s-level engineering degree at Stanford, the Department of Bioengineering will waive its normal departmental requirement that the 15 units applied toward the PhD degree (beyond the master’s degree level) be formal course work. Consistent with the university’s PhD requirements, the department will instead accept 15 units comprised of courses, research or seminars that are approved by the student’s academic advisor and the department chair. Students not completing their MS engineering degree at Stanford will be required to take 15 units of formal course work in engineering-related areas, as determined by their academic advisor.

Dual MBA/MS

Stanford offers the opportunity to pursue a dual MS/MBA, which combines its world-leading programs in engineering and business. Admitted students fulfill the degree requirements for each degree with advising from BioE and GSB. Students may choose to pursue the dual MS/MBA concurrently or consecutively.

Candidates interested in pursuing the dual MS/MBA must apply to and be accepted by the other program separately, then notify the BioE program or GSB. Candidates may apply concurrently to both programs or apply to the dual degree program during the first year as an MBA or MS student.

For more information about applying to the MBA and BioE MS program, please consult the  MBA admissions website  and  BioE graduate admissions website.

Joint JD/MS/PhD

The School of Law and the Department of Bioengineering offer joint programs leading to either a JD degree combined with an MS degree in Bioengineering or to a JD combined with a PhD in Bioengineering.

The JD/MS and JD/PhD degree programs are designed for students who wish to prepare themselves intensively for careers in areas relating to both law and bioengineering. Students interested in either joint degree program must apply and gain entrance separately to the School of Law and the Department of Bioengineering and, as an additional step, must secure permission from both academic units to pursue degrees in those units as part of a joint degree program. Interest in either joint degree program should be noted on the student’s admission applications and may be considered by the admission committee of each program. Alternatively, an enrolled student in either the Law School or the Bioengineering Department may apply for admission to the other program and for joint degree status in both academic units after commencing study in either program.

Joint degree students may elect to begin their course of study in either the School of Law or the Department of Bioengineering. Faculty advisers from each academic unit will participate in the planning and supervising of the student’s joint program. Students must be enrolled full time in the Law School for the first year of law school, and, at some point during the joint program, may be required to devote one or more quarters largely or exclusively to studies in the Bioengineering program regardless of whether enrollment at that time is in the Law School or the Department of Bioengineering. At all other times, enrollment may be in the graduate school or the Law School, and students may choose courses from either program regardless of where enrolled. Students must satisfy the requirements for both the JD and the MS or PhD degrees as specified in the Stanford Bulletin or elsewhere.

The Law School shall approve courses from the Bioengineering Department that may count toward the JD degree, and the Bioengineering Department shall approve courses from the Law School that may count toward the MS or PhD degree in Bioengineering. In either case, approval may consist of a list applicable to all joint degree students or may be tailored to each student’s program. The lists may differ depending on whether the student is pursuing an MS or a PhD in Bioengineering.

In the case of a JD/MS program, no more than 45 units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. In the case of a JD/PhD program, no more than 54 units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. In either case, no more than 36 units of courses that originate outside the Law School may count toward the law degree. To the extent that courses under this joint degree program originate outside of the Law School but count toward the law degree, the Law School credits permitted under Section 17(1) of the Law School Regulations shall be reduced on a unit-per-unit basis, but not below zero.

The maximum number of Law School credits that may be counted toward the MS or PhD in Bioengineering is the greater of: (i) 15 units; or (ii) the maximum number of units from courses outside of the department that MS or PhD candidates in Bioengineering are permitted to count toward the applicable degree under general departmental guidelines or in the case of a particular student’s individual program. Tuition and financial aid arrangements will normally be through the school in which the student is then enrolled.

  • Combined PhD Programs

Formal Combined PhD Programs

Ad hoc combined phd programs.

Many academic departments and programs in the Graduate School partner to offer formal combined PhDs. You can apply for a formal combined degree program in your original admission application to the Graduate School; or, if you are in your first year of study, by requesting to transfer from your current program to a combined program. Students may not transfer programs after they have advanced to candidacy.

To explore the possibility of transferring to a combined degree program, you should consult with the directors of graduate studies in your current and prospective programs. You will need to identify an appropriate academic adviser in the new program; fill out the Departmental Transfer Form ; and prepare a one-to-two-page statement detailing your academic reasons for requesting the transfer and a timeline for completing the PhD. Requests to transfer to a combined program should be submitted to your current and prospective programs for review and approval, which is entirely at the discretion of the two departments/programs.  Programs then submit signed forms and materials to the Dean’s Office for final approval. These should be sent to [email protected] .

You also have the option to propose an ad hoc combined PhD for approval by both programs and the Graduate School. If you are in your first year of study and wish to explore the possibility of transferring to an ad hoc combined PhD, you should discuss your plans and proposal with the directors of graduate studies in your current and prospective programs. You will need to identify an appropriate academic adviser in the new program and complete the Departmental Transfer Form . (Example: a student in Political Science applying to transfer to an ad hoc combined PhD with Religious Studies would fill out the form requesting a transfer from "Political Science" to "Political Science and Religious Studies.") In addition to the form, you should prepare a one-to-two-page statement explaining the academic reasons for the ad hoc proposal. Applications to transfer to an ad hoc combined PhD must also include a detailed outline and timeline for completing all requirements of the degree.

Please note that a combined degree should represent some combination of the requirements of each program, as agreed to by both DGSs. It does not represent the total sum of requirements in both programs. The combined degree is not two PhDs, but rather a combination of two doctoral programs that can be completed within the student's normal time to degree. Requests to transfer to a combined program should be submitted to your current and prospective programs for review and approval. Approval is entirely at the discretion of each program. Programs then submit signed forms and materials to the Dean’s Office for final approval. These should be sent to [email protected] .

Students in the Department of Linguistics in the Division of the Humanities who wish to work toward a joint PhD in Psychology's Cognition Program and in Linguistics must be admitted to the Department of Psychology .

Joint PhD in Financial Economics

Established in 2006, the Joint PhD Program in Financial Economics is offered jointly by the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics and the Finance dissertation area at  Chicago Booth . The aim of this program is to leverage the strengths of both sponsors in training PhD students interested in financial economics. Students must satisfy program requirements for the PhD in both departments.

Joint PhD in Psychology and Business

Established in 2009, the Joint Program in Psychology and Business is overseen jointly by the  Department of Psychology  and the  Behavioral Science dissertation area  at Chicago Booth. The aim of this program is to connect the large number of social, cognitive, and organizational psychologists at Chicago Booth and within the Department of Psychology. To qualify for the joint program, a student must be admitted into either the Psychology or the Business graduate program.

JD/PhD Programs

Doctoral students in Social Sciences who are also admitted to the University of Chicago Law School may pursue a concurrent PhD/JD program , where there is an explicit and authorized close association between legal education and doctoral training. Students in the concurrent degree program alternate registration sites between the two units. Students complete all requirements for both degrees. Applicants must apply to both programs separately. The University of Chicago Law School has established a fellowship program to support students pursuing a concurrent JD/PhD at the University of Chicago, which may grant fellowship aid during the Law School years.

MD/PhD in Medicine, the Social Sciences, and Humanities

The program in  Medicine, the Social Sciences and Humanities (MeSH)  at the University of Chicago trains medical students to become innovative physician-scholars at the critical interface of medicine and society. The MeSH program is an opportunity for students interested in obtaining an MD and a PhD in a field outside of the traditional biological and physical sciences. Students interested in MeSH may pursue a doctoral degree among any of the graduate programs relevant to the social sciences and humanities at the University of Chicago.

Joint PhD in Social Thought & Classics

The  Joint Ph.D. Program in Social Thought and Classics  is intended for students whose study of a particular issue or text from the ancient Greek and Roman world requires a broadly inter-disciplinary approach alongside a professional mastery of philological skills. Those interested in pursuing this joint degree program must first be admitted in EITHER the  Committee on Social Thought  OR the  Department of Classics  and complete at minimum the two quarter language survey (Greek or Latin), offered by the Department of Classics, with an average grade of B or higher. Application shall then be made to the second department and, provided that the standards of admission to that department are met, students will be admitted to joint degree status.

Joint PhD Social Thought & Philosophy

The  Joint Ph.D. Program in Social Thought and Philosophy  is designed to provide students with equal in-depth training, simultaneously provided by the Committee on Social Thought and the Department of Philosophy . Those interested in pursuing this joint degree program must first be admitted in EITHER the Committee on Social Thought OR the Department of Philosophy. After commencing the program of study, application shall then be made to the second department and, provided that the standards of admission to that department are met, students will be admitted to joint degree status.

Other Joint and Ad Hoc Degree Possibilities

Students admitted to any doctoral program in Social Sciences may subsequently petition the University to create a joint program with another department. Such individually-created joint degree programs begin in the second year of graduate studies or later. In all cases, students complete the separate program requirements for each degree, with no additional residence requirement, and write one Ph.D. dissertation that separately meets the dissertation requirements of each department.

Combined MBA/PhD

student and staff member outside

One of the many distinguishing characteristics of the Materials Science, Engineering, and Commercialization (MSEC) Ph. D. program is the focus on commercialization. The McCoy College of Business participates in this program to provide business skills and knowledge to better prepare the MSEC students for a successful career in technical business. Two of the MSEC commercialization focused courses, MSEC 7301 and MSEC 7302, taught by faculty from the McCoy College of Business. The students receive additional business knowledge and experience through other courses as well as two required intensive 40-hour commercialization boot camps.

Towards this end, current MSEC students may also apply for admission to the MBA program offered by the McCoy College of Business. Students who are concurrently enrolled in both of these programs are allowed to fulfill 6-hours of MBA electives with core MSEC courses: MSEC 7301 (Practical Skills in Commercialization and Entrepreneurship) and MSEC 7302 (Leadership Skills in Commercialization and Entrepreneurship). This plan allows completion of both programs in 85 credit hours versus a total of 91 hours if the two programs are completed independently (55 hours for the MSEC Ph. D. and 36 hours for the MBA).

Students should obtain approval from dissertation committee chair prior to applying to the MBA program. Please make note:

  • Admission to the MBA program is separate from admission to the MSEC Ph. D. program and is not guaranteed.
  • Funding for their graduate assistant position is not guaranteed past the seventh long semester.
  • Although the curricula are integrated, the MSEC Ph. D. and MBA are separate programs with separate degree requirements. Completion of one degree program does not infer completion of the other.

Upon acceptance into the MBA program, it will be the responsibility of McCoy College to notify the Graduate College of the students request to participate in the dual degree MSEC PhD-MBA program.

Get to know Michael Ferrer, MSIM student

After spending some time in the defense IT industry, Michael Ferrer decided to return to school for his MSIM degree to gain skills in areas such as data visualization and advance his career. Outside of his studies, Ferrer is a competitive ballroom dancer and member of the Illinois Army National Guard.

Why did you decide to pursue an IM degree?

Before entering the MSIM program, I worked for six years at a network operations center. I enjoyed my time there, but I felt a bit stagnant in my professional growth. I needed a significant change in my life to break that cycle, so when the opportunity to pursue an MSIM degree presented itself, I took the leap and applied.

Why did you choose the iSchool at Illinois?

I earned my bachelor's degree in computer science from Illinois State University in Bloomington, which is about an hour from Urbana-Champaign. Since I'm well acquainted with central Illinois, I welcomed the chance to pursue my graduate education in a familiar environment. I also chose the University of Illinois because of its amazing academic reputation nationally and abroad. I have found the faculty and staff at the iSchool to be very helpful, and while there are a lot of students on campus, my learning environment feels just right with classes that are not too empty or full.

What particular IM topics interest you the most?

I really like classes that leverage tools for data visualization. We get to use tools like Microsoft PowerBI and Salesforce Tableau, which are used in industry to interpret and visualize data into something that clients/customers will understand. I also enjoy classes that cover interdisciplinary concepts, touching on data analytics but also delving into business-related principles and lessons learned from case studies.

What do you do outside of class?

Outside of class, I am primarily a part of Illini DanceSport, which is the university's competitive ballroom dance student organization. I attend many social dance events too, such as salsa, bachata, swing dance, etc. I also serve part time in the military through the Illinois Army National Guard. The organization lets me fulfill my dream of being a soldier, while letting me pursue my civilian education.

What career plans or goals do you have?

As of right now, my plan is to return to St. Louis, Missouri, after completing the MSIM program to pursue a higher-level position at my old workplace. However, I am also open to other opportunities as they present themselves.
