Unfortunately, Bose died in a plane crash in 1945, just months before India gained independence from British rule.

Today, Bose is remembered as a hero in India and name will always be synonymous with the struggle for Indian independence, and his sacrifice and dedication will be remembered for generations to come.

Personal Experience

One incident that inspired me about Subhash Chandra Bose was his decision to resign from the Indian National Congress (INC) and form the Forward Bloc. This political group sought to unite all anti-British forces in India.

Bose was a vocal critic of the British government and advocated for more aggressive action to achieve independence. However, his ideas were controversial within the Congress Party, and he disagreed with the party's leadership. Despite the potential consequences and risks, Bose did not let fear hold him back and took the bold step to form his political group. This demonstrated his determination and conviction to fight for India's independence, regardless of the challenges he faced.

Bose's decision to follow his principles and beliefs, even when it meant going against the mainstream, is an inspiration to me and serves as a reminder that one should always stand up for what one believes.

Subhash Chandra Bose- An Unsung Hero

Whenever we hear the name Subhash Chandra Bose, the first thing that comes in our mind is a popular saying by him, “Tum Mujhe Khoon do main tumhe Azadi dunga”.

Subhash Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji, was a great militant, freedom fighter and a patriot. He was born in Cuttack, Orissa on 23rd January 1897 to Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Devi. His father Janakinath Bose was a well-known lawyer of his time. His mother Prabhavati Devi was a religious woman.

Subhash Chandra was a brilliant student who had scored the second position in the matriculation exam. At an early age, he started reading about Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna and was influenced by their teachings. Bose completed his B.A. Hons in Philosophy in 1918 from the University of Calcutta. He later went to England in September 1919 for further studies. He was selected for the Indian Civil Service but he did not want to stay in England and serve the British government. Subhash Chandra resigned from his Civil Service job in 1921 and returned to India after hearing of the national turmoil in India.

From a young age, Subhash Chandra Bose had the nationalist temperament and Britishers’ discrimination towards Indians would fill him with rage. To serve the country, he joined the Indian National Congress (also known as the Congress Party). Bose joined the Noncooperation Movement, started by Gandhi under his influence. Bose was a revolutionary freedom fighter who was known to have founded the Azad Hind Army or Indian National Army. For his revolutionary movements, Bose had been to jail several times. He was suspected of connections with secret revolutionary movements and was sent to Mandalay Jail in Burma (Myanmar) where he contracted Tuberculosis. Bose was elected the president of Congress party and worked along with Jawahar Lal Nehru, another great political leader. Both had a more militant and left-wing approach to Independence, which became a reason for Bose’s differences with Gandhi and other Congress leaders.

Bose’s selfless contribution to India’s Independence Movement and organizing and leading the Indian National Army is indispensable. His struggle of Independence was highlighted during the Civil Disobedience Movement for which he had even been arrested. In fact, he was imprisoned 11 times for his ideologies and the use of force against the British. Bose was elected the president of the Indian National Congress twice but he resigned from the post as he was against the congress internal and foreign policy.

Soon, he left the party and went out of the country seeking an alliance with other countries to fight against British forces. He earned the support of the Japanese and they agreed to help him in forming the Indian national army in Southeast Asia. Later on, he became the commander of the INA. The Indian National Army attacked the North-eastern parts of India. This attack took place under the leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose and he was even successful in acquiring a few portions of the north-eastern parts of India. Unfortunately, the surrender of the Japanese forced him to withdraw and call off the war. It is believed that he died in a plane crash on 18th August 1945. Subash Chandra Bose was an unforgettable national hero who fought for the country’s freedom struggle against the British till his last breath. He is known to be one of the greatest heroes the country has ever seen!

A Little Bit About Subhash Chandra Bose

Subhash Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack, Orissa, in 1897. He grew up deeply identifying with the Indian Freedom Movement and subsequently became a part of it in the 1920s.

He led a radical wing of the Indian National Congress (INC) throughout the 1920s and 1930s and eventually gained enough popularity and support to rise to a position of leadership in the INC. He eventually became the Congress President in 1938, but ended up leaving the party in 1939 because of a difference of opinion with the rest of the Congress leadership.

After his resignation from the Congress, he was placed under house arrest by the ruling British Government, but managed to escape India in 1940. Upon his escape, he made his way to Germany by 1941, where he secured the sympathy and help of the Nazi party in his plan to overthrow the British Occupation. 200 Words Essay On Subhash Chandra Bose

A leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule, Subhash Chandra Bose was a revolutionary freedom fighter. He was born in Cuttack, India, in 1897 into a wealthy, well-educated family. Bose was an exceptional student who succeeded in the classroom and won a scholarship to attend Cambridge University in England.

Following the completion of his study in England, Bose returned to India and joined the Indian National Congress, a political organization fighting for India’s independence from British control. He advanced fast through the party hierarchy and emerged as a pivotal figure in the independence struggle.

Bose called for more aggressive measures to attain independence and was a vociferous critic of the British government. He thought that more aggressive tactics were required in addition to nonviolent opposition in order to gain India’s freedom.

In his struggle against the British during World War II, Bose looked to the Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan. He went to Germany and met with Adolf Hitler to ask for military support and backing for the independence of India. Major contributors to the Indian independence movement and forces that served to energize support for independence among the Indian people were Bose’s leadership and the INA’s efforts. But Bose passed away in a plane accident in 1945, a few months before India became free of British dominion.

Regarded as one of the most revolutionary and esteemed freedom fighters of our country, Subhash Chandra Bose is indeed a quintessential example of Courage and Selflessness. Whenever we hear this legend’s name his famous quote strikes our mind at the drop of a hat, “You Give me Blood,I shall give you freedom” Fondly called, “Netaji” he was born in Odisha on 23rd January 1897 to Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Devi.

Mr  Janakinath Bose was an esteemed and one of the most well-off lawyers of Calcutta and Ms. Prabhavinat Devi was a pious and righteous woman. Subash Chandra Bose was a bright student during his childhood and his intelligence helped him ace the matriculation exam. The teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Swami Vivekananda had a profound impact on him.

He pursued Ba(Hons.) Philosophy from Presidency College, University of Calcutta, and further he enrolled in the University Of Cambridge to prepare for Indian Civil Services and he was selected as well but Jallianwala Bagh Massacre stirred up his patriotism and he was propelled to alleviate India from the turmoil which it was going through at that time and thus, he left the path of civil services as he didn’t want to serve the British Government and he embarked upon his journey as a revolutionary freedom fighter when he came back to India.

He laid the foundation of his political career by first working in the Indian National Congress which was led by Mahatma Gandhi who at that point impacted everyone with his ideology of Non-violence Netaji initially worked in Calcutta for the Indian National Congress along with Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das whom he considered as his mentor for excelling in politics during the time period of 1921-1925. Bose and C.R. Das had been imprisoned on various occasions due to their proactive involvement in revolutionary movements.

Netaji worked as a chief executive along with C.R. Das who was elected as a mayor of Calcutta then. In the year 1925, C.R. Das died and that deeply devastated him. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose strongly supported the complete independence of our country not in a phased manner like the Congress party who had agreed to dominion status for our country. Unlike the ideology of Non-violence and cooperation, Bose was more radical in his approach and believed that aggression would definitely aid in attaining independence.

Slowly and steadily, Bose was also becoming powerful and influential among the masses, and because of that he was elected as the president of the Indian National Congress twice but that was short-lived due to the ideological differences between him and Mahatma Gandhi as Gandhiji was a strong believer of non-violence whereas, on the other hand, Bose was a strong supporter of aggression and violent resistance.

He held the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Swami Vivekananda in high confidence and that was his main source of inspiration. There is a famous quote which says that “An enemy’s enemy is a friend” and he capitalized upon this approach as we know that he was imprisoned 11 times by the British because of his violent resistance and when he was imprisoned around 1940, he cleverly escaped from the prison and went to countries such as Germany, Burma, and Japan and walked the whole nine yards to laid the foundation of Indian National Army(INA) also known as ‘Azad Hind Fauj.’

He was highly successful in attacking and capturing some parts of North East India and now the tide was in his favour but it was short-lived as Japan surrendered because of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing and that marked a major turning point. Netaji was steadfast and resolute in his purpose and decided to go to Tokyo in order to devise a further course of action but unfortunately, his plane crashed midway at Taipei. His death though even today is considered a mystery and numerous people still believe that Netaji is alive

In a nutshell, Subhas Chandra Bose was an exemplary leader who had unmatched and unfathomable Patriotism towards his country and as we have recounted his journey from beginning to end, it can be confidently said that his contribution to the freedom struggle is indispensable and unforgettable.

Subhash Chandra Bose is well-known to every Indian as one of the greatest freedom fighters of India. He is commonly called “Netaji”.

He was born on 23rd January 1897 in Cuttak, Orissa. The name of his father was Janakinath Bose. His mother’s name was Prabhavati. His father was a lawyer. It was, however, his mother who had a lasting influence on his mind. He was also greatly influenced by some spiritual preachers.

As a young man, his greatest desire was to serve India. He passed his intermediate examination in the first division. He did his B.A. from the Presidency College, Kolkata. He went to England, and more to please his father than himself, he appeared in the Indian Civil Services Examination and passed it getting the fourth position in the merit list.

After returning from England, he joined the Swaraj Party and went to jail for his activities which were undesirable in the eyes of the British.

He joined the Congress and rose to become its President. He did not like the soft glove methods of Gandhiji and there was a perennial disagreement between the two stalwarts.

In order to get freedom for India by force, he led the Indian National Army. He went to Germany and met Hitler to seek his help. Later, he went to Japan. As Japan was defeated, Bose’s whereabouts became a mystery. It is often believed that he died in a plane crash.

He will always be remembered for his great sacrifices and for his famous slogans – “Delhi Chalo” and give me you” blood and I will give you freedom.”

Essay on Subhash Chandra Bose in 500 words

Subhash Chandra Bose was born on January 23rd, 1897 at Cuttack. His father was a lawyer, therefore he had a comfortable childhood. His parents spared no efforts for his education. He in turn always lived up to their expectations by remaining in the top five positions in all the examinations that he took.

While at school Subhash never got along with the other British boys of his class. This childhood antipathy for the British remained with Subhash all through his life. It was therefore not surprising that Subhash had taken the vow to turn the British out of the country at a very early age.

He joined the Indian National Congress, and he was an active participant of all its activities. He, however, did not like the peaceful methods of Gandhiji. In 1938 he was made the President of Congress. It was from this position that he asked the people of India to take up arms. against the British. But he soon resigned from this post after he felt that Gandhiji objected to his approach of gaining freedom.

Such was his popularity amongst the common man that the Government soon arrested him and sent him to jail. He fell ill in the prison and had to go to Europe for treatment. Even there he did not sit idle, instead, he made contacts and friends and tried to influence public opinion, so that India could attain freedom.

On coming back to India he was again arrested and put in jail. He went on a hunger strike. Fearing his death he was put under house arrest. However, he escaped to Berlin and then to Singapore. In Singapore, he formed the Indian National Army(INA). At his clarion call of ‘ Give me Blood and I will give you Freedom’, many people including the women joined the INA. The call of Delhi Chalo’ was on everyone’s lips.

Soon his army attacked British India. But they were outnumbered by the sophistication of the British army. Yet people waited for him and the INA to liberate the country.

Unfortunately, instead of the news of the victory of the INA, the news of his death in a plane crash destroyed all the hopes of an armed liberation of the country from the British.

Netaji was a controversial personality while he lived, and he remained so even in his death. Many people even today believe that he is still living. Yet, whatever may have been his ultimate fate he will always be remembered as a leader who stopped at nothing to win freedom for his country. He was indeed a brave son of the motherland, who gave the slogan of Jai Hind to all the Indians.

Essay on Subhas Chandra Bose for Students and Children in 1500 Words

In this article, we have published an Essay on Subhas Chandra Bose for students and children in 1500 words. It includes the early life, education, career, major works and death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Table of Contents

Essay on Subhas Chandra Bose (1500 Words)

Subhas Chandra Bose was a nationalist, revolutionist, and soldier of Indian Independence struggle. He was one rationalist who believed in the war to get rid of British rule.

To achieve this, he shook hands with Hitler’s and Japan Imperial, which brought criticism and also created a troubling legacy. Even after all this criticism, his contribution to making free India was undeniable.

Early life and Education

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born on 23rd January in 1897 at Cuttack, Bengal Province (Now Orissa). His father’s name was Janakinath Bose, and his mother’s name was Prabhvati Devi. He belonged to a well-doing Kayastha family.

He started his education in Protestant European School (presently Stewart High School) in Cuttack. In the year of 1909, he was shifted to Ravenshaw Collegiate School. Subhas Chandra Bose secured the second position in the matriculation examination and was admitted to Presidency College.

He was moved by Swami Vivekananda . Because of his influence, the spark against the British was kindled in his mind. His nationalist temperament was exposed when he assaulted professor Orton in the protest of insults to Indians by the British in the open forum. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Scottish Church College.

After graduation, Subhas Chandra Bose went to Europe and arrived in London. He planned to prepare for the Indian Civil Service examination. He was eager to join the University of Cambridge. But the deadline for admission was passed.

With the help of some local contacts and the Indian students, he got admission in the university. Subhash Chandra Bose prepared for ICS. He stood forth in the examination.

But he refused to work under the British government. He realized that the national edifice can be raised only by sacrifice and being on the soil of the motherland. He left the civil service job and came back to India.

Career of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. He was an integral part of the Indian National Congress until their views differed and they drifted apart.

Indian National Congress- He started the newspaper named Swaraj and took the responsibility to campaign on behalf of the Indian National Congress in Bengal province.

His mentor was Chittaranjan Das, who was the face of aggressive nationalism in Bengal. In 1923, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was elected the President of the All India Youth Congress.

He was also the Secretary of Bengal State Congress. Later he became the CEO of Calcutta Municipal Corporation. Subhas Chandra Bose was the editor of the newspaper named ‘Forward’. He became general secretary of the Congress party and started working with Jawaharlal Nehru for independence.

Illness, Austria – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose traveled to Europe. In there, he saw the raw picture of communism and fascism. He wrote his first book named ‘The Indian struggle’. Although the book was published in London, the British banned the book to publish in India with the fear that it might cause unrest.

1937-1940: Indian National Congress

By this time, Bose managed to emerge as a leader with national stature. He believed in the view that Independence can be achieved only by nationalist acts, through war. Subhash Chandra Bose suggested forming the Indian National Army to achieve political freedom and social stabilization.

But his belief directly countered Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent approach. Gandhi asked him to split apart and form a new cabinet. But in the assembly of India National Congress, he was elected as president over the candidate preferred by Gandhi.

Subhash Chandra Bose got massive votes from the southern provinces of India. But as a result of maneuvering from Gandhi led a bloc of the party, he was forced to resign from the post of president.

On 22 June 1939, Bose formed the All India Forward Bloc, a faction of the Indian National Congress, aiming to merge the political left, but its main strength lies in his home state of Bengal. Yu Muthuramalingam, who has been a staunch supporter of Bose from the beginning, joined Thevar Forward Block. When Bose visited Madurai on September 6, Thevar held a huge rally as his reception.

Although his correspondence was a clear dislike of British oppression, he was very impressed with their method and their disciplined attitude towards order and life. In England, he exchanged ideas with the British on the future of India.

Subhas Chandra Bose believed that an independent India needed socialist authoritarianism. Failing to convince Gandhi of its necessity, Bose organized a mass protest in Calcutta and called for the removal of the ‘Howell Monument’ in memory of Calcutta’s black hole.

He was jailed by the British but released after a seven-day hunger strike. Bose’s house in Calcutta was placed under CID surveillance.

1941-1943: The  Wehrmacht (Na-zi Army Germany)

Germany, where Subhas Chandra Bose was attached to the Special Bureau for India under the direction of Adam von Trott zu Solz, was responsible for broadcasting on the German-sponsored Azad Hind Radio.

Subhas Chandra Bose founded the Free India Center in Berlin and created the Indian Legion (with about 4500 soldiers) in the Indian war prisoners who fought for the British in North Africa before the Axis forces took over.

The Indian Legion was merged with the Wehrmacht and later transferred to the Waffen SS. Its members swore allegiance to Hitler and Bose: “I swear to God that I will obey the German race and state leader Adolf Hitler as commander of the German Armed Forces in the fight for India.

However, The Wehrmacht forces led by the Azad Hind Legion are also ready to invade India through the USSR; Many have questioned his judgment here, as it seems likely that the Germans could easily leave after such an invasion, which could also be the reason for the axis victory in the war.

In all, over 3,000 Indian prisoners of war have signed up for the Free India Legion. But instead of being happy, Bose was concerned. A left-wing admirer of Russia, he was exterminated when Hitler tanks floated across the Soviet border. Things have worsened since the now dwindling German army was not in a position to help the British escape from India.

When he met Hitler in May 1942, his doubts were re-inforced and he believed that the The Wehrmacht leader was more looking for in using his army to achieve propaganda than military success.

So, in February 1943, Bose boarded a German U-boat and set off for Japan. This made the men he did not appoint a leader frustrating in Germany.

1943-1945: Japanese occupied Asia

In 1943, after disillusioning that Germany could do anything to help India gain independence, he set out for Japan. Subhas Chandra Bose traveled around the Cape of Good Hope in the southeast of Madagascar with a German Submarine U-180.

There he was transferred to I-29 for the rest of the journey to Imperial Japan. It was the only civilian transfer between two submarines of two different navies in World War II.

Indian National Army (INA) Japanese Major (and Post-War Lieutenant General) Iwichi Fujiwara, head of the Japanese Intelligence Unit, Fujiwara Kikan, and its origins, first at the meetings between Fujiwara and Bangkok Chapter President, Indian Independence League .

Through the network, the West Malayan Peninsula in December 1941, Captain Mohan Singh captured the British Indian Army recruiting on Fujiwara.

Death of Subhas Chandra Bose

In Tohoku airport, Subhas Chandra Bose was departing the standard route taken by the aircraft during takeoff. Suddenly, the people heard a huge noise blasting. Mechanics at Tarmac saw something falling off the plane.

The plane crashed to the right, crashed into two, and exploded. Inside, the chief pilot, the copilot, and Vice Chief Lieutenant General of Japan’s Kwantung Army, Lieutenant General Tsunamasa Shidei, had to negotiate with the Soviet army in Manchuria for Bose and were killed instantly.

Bose’s aide, Habibar Rehman, was shocked, briefly exited, and drowned in gasoline, though Bose was unconscious and not fatally injured. When Rehman arrived, he and Bose tried to get through the back door but found it was blocked by luggage. They then ran through the fire and exit.

The ground crew, now approaching the plane, saw two people staggering toward them, one of whom turned into a human fire. According to Joyce Chapman Lebra, “An ambulance truck drove Bose and other passengers to a military hospital south of Tahoe.”

Airport staff called Dr. Taneyoshi Yoshimi, a surgeon in the hospital at 3 p.m. Subhas Chandra Bose was conscious and coherent when they arrived at the hospital, and for a while.

Bose was naked, wrapped in a blanket around him, and Dr. Yoshimi immediately saw evidence of third-degree burns on many parts of the body, especially his chest, and was very skeptical that he was alive.

Dr. Yoshimi immediately began treating Bose and was assisted by Dr. Suruta. According to historian Leonard A. Gordon, who interviewed hospital staff.

Hope this essay on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose helped you to understand more about this freedom fighter.

Jagadish chandra bose: essay on jagadish chandra bose.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Read this essay on Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858 A.D. – 1937 A.D.)

Jagadish Chandra Bose was married to Abla Das in 1887. Abla Das was the daughter of a famous lawyer, Durgamohan Das. She proved a very valuable life-partner and helper in his studies and researches. Jagadish Chandra Bose continued his experiments in transmitting radio waves through atmosphere. He designed and made his own compact apparatus for generating electromagnetic waves of 25 to 5 mm wavelength. He studied their quasioptical properties, such as refraction, polarization and double refraction.

Jagadish Chandra Bose could even achieve rotation of the plane of polarization by transmission of electric rays through a bundle of twisted jute fibres. At that time there were other scientists like Marconi in Italy, Lodge in England and Muirhead in America who were trying to transmit electrical signals through space without wires. But it was Marconi who ultimately got the credit of inventing the wireless telegraphy. London University conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Science in 1896 in recognition of his valuable researches in the field of wireless transmission and telegraphy.

Jagdish Chandra Bose

He highlighted the basic and fundamental unity among animals, plants and nonliving things in the conference. He suggested that the gap between the living and non-living things might not be as much as was generally conceived. Later in 1901 he was invited by the Royal Society of London to deliver his lecture, where he said, “I have shown you these evening autograph records on the history of stress and strain in the non-living, so similar indeed that you cannot tell one from the other.” He found that even vegetable tissues and certain organic systems produced similar electrical responses under different kinds of stimuli. His theories and discoveries were published by the Royal Society in a book-form entitled, “Response in the Living and Nonliving” in 1902.

Jagadish Chandra Bose invented a very sensitive instrument called “crescograph” which helped in magnifying one thousand to ten thousand times the growth of a plant at the cellular level, (l could measure with a great accuracy the extremely slow growth of the plants and trees. He also accurately measured the rate of photosynthesis in plants. He also revealed the mystery of ascent of sap in plants and trees. He invented many other devices and instruments of great precision and delicacy to measure the internal activities of plants and animals. In praise of these instruments Scientific American said, “What is the tale of Alladin and his wonderful lamp compared to the possibilities of crescograph? In less than quarter of an hour the action of fertilizers, food, electric currents and various stimulants can be fully determined.” In a similar Vein Henri Bergson (1859-1941), the great French philosopher, psychologist and the Nobel laureate observed, ” The plants had, by Bose’s marvelous inventions been rendered the most eloquent witness of their hiltheirto unexpressed life-story. Nature has at last been forced to yield her most jealously guarded secrets.”

Fie served as Professor of Physics at the Calcutta University from 1885 to 1915 and then as Emeritus Professor for the next two years. He founded the Bose Research Institute on November 30, 1917 at Calcutta. The Institute received generous grants and funds from the public and the government.

He remained intimately associated with the Institute till his death in November, 1937 as its Founder-Director. He was also the Foundation Fellow, Indian National Science Academy; Fellow, Royal Society, London and corresponding Member, Vienna Academy of Sciences. He was knighted in 1917.

Jagadish Chandra Bose was also nominated a member of the League of Nations’ Committee on Intellectual Co-operation. His admirers included such great renowned personalities as G.B Shaw, Romain Rolland, and professor Hans Molisch etc. He wrote many books and authored many scientific papers of great scientific significance. Many of these were translated into European language. He died on November 23, 1937.

The personal statement might just be the hardest part of your college application. Mostly this is because it has the least guidance and is the most open-ended. One way to understand what colleges are looking for when they ask you to write an essay is to check out the essays of students who already got in—college essays that actually worked. After all, they must be among the most successful of this weird literary genre.

In this article, I'll go through general guidelines for what makes great college essays great. I've also compiled an enormous list of 100+ actual sample college essays from 11 different schools. Finally, I'll break down two of these published college essay examples and explain why and how they work. With links to 177 full essays and essay excerpts , this article is a great resource for learning how to craft your own personal college admissions essay!

What Excellent College Essays Have in Common

Even though in many ways these sample college essays are very different from one other, they do share some traits you should try to emulate as you write your own essay.

Visible Signs of Planning

Building out from a narrow, concrete focus. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. After this sense-heavy imagery, the essay expands out to make a broader point about the author, and connects this very memorable experience to the author's present situation, state of mind, newfound understanding, or maturity level.

Knowing how to tell a story. Some of the experiences in these essays are one-of-a-kind. But most deal with the stuff of everyday life. What sets them apart is the way the author approaches the topic: analyzing it for drama and humor, for its moving qualities, for what it says about the author's world, and for how it connects to the author's emotional life.

Stellar Execution

A killer first sentence. You've heard it before, and you'll hear it again: you have to suck the reader in, and the best place to do that is the first sentence. Great first sentences are punchy. They are like cliffhangers, setting up an exciting scene or an unusual situation with an unclear conclusion, in order to make the reader want to know more. Don't take my word for it—check out these 22 first sentences from Stanford applicants and tell me you don't want to read the rest of those essays to find out what happens!

A lively, individual voice. Writing is for readers. In this case, your reader is an admissions officer who has read thousands of essays before yours and will read thousands after. Your goal? Don't bore your reader. Use interesting descriptions, stay away from clichés, include your own offbeat observations—anything that makes this essay sounds like you and not like anyone else.

body-frog-cc0

Technical correctness. No spelling mistakes, no grammar weirdness, no syntax issues, no punctuation snafus—each of these sample college essays has been formatted and proofread perfectly. If this kind of exactness is not your strong suit, you're in luck! All colleges advise applicants to have their essays looked over several times by parents, teachers, mentors, and anyone else who can spot a comma splice. Your essay must be your own work, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting help polishing it.

And if you need more guidance, connect with PrepScholar's expert admissions consultants . These expert writers know exactly what college admissions committees look for in an admissions essay and chan help you craft an essay that boosts your chances of getting into your dream school.

Analyzing Great Common App Essays That Worked

I've picked two essays from the examples collected above to examine in more depth so that you can see exactly what makes a successful college essay work. Full credit for these essays goes to the original authors and the schools that published them.

Example 1: "Breaking Into Cars," by Stephen, Johns Hopkins Class of '19 (Common App Essay, 636 words long)

I had never broken into a car before.

We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van.

Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back.

"Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?"

"Why me?" I thought.

More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window's seal like I'd seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I'd been in this type of situation before. In fact, I'd been born into this type of situation.

My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. "The water's on fire! Clear a hole!" he shouted, tossing me in the lake without warning. While I'm still unconvinced about that particular lesson's practicality, my Dad's overarching message is unequivocally true: much of life is unexpected, and you have to deal with the twists and turns.

Living in my family, days rarely unfolded as planned. A bit overlooked, a little pushed around, I learned to roll with reality, negotiate a quick deal, and give the improbable a try. I don't sweat the small stuff, and I definitely don't expect perfect fairness. So what if our dining room table only has six chairs for seven people? Someone learns the importance of punctuality every night.

But more than punctuality and a special affinity for musical chairs, my family life has taught me to thrive in situations over which I have no power. Growing up, I never controlled my older siblings, but I learned how to thwart their attempts to control me. I forged alliances, and realigned them as necessary. Sometimes, I was the poor, defenseless little brother; sometimes I was the omniscient elder. Different things to different people, as the situation demanded. I learned to adapt.

Back then, these techniques were merely reactions undertaken to ensure my survival. But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: "How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?"

The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to me in Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the answer. I knew why the coat hanger had been handed to me.

Growing up as the middle child in my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in the company of people I did not choose. It's family. It's society. And often, it's chaos. You participate by letting go of the small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and preparedness. My family experience taught me to face a serendipitous world with confidence.

What Makes This Essay Tick?

It's very helpful to take writing apart in order to see just how it accomplishes its objectives. Stephen's essay is very effective. Let's find out why!

An Opening Line That Draws You In

In just eight words, we get: scene-setting (he is standing next to a car about to break in), the idea of crossing a boundary (he is maybe about to do an illegal thing for the first time), and a cliffhanger (we are thinking: is he going to get caught? Is he headed for a life of crime? Is he about to be scared straight?).

Great, Detailed Opening Story

More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window's seal like I'd seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame.

It's the details that really make this small experience come alive. Notice how whenever he can, Stephen uses a more specific, descriptive word in place of a more generic one. The volunteers aren't going to get food or dinner; they're going for "Texas BBQ." The coat hanger comes from "a dumpster." Stephen doesn't just move the coat hanger—he "jiggles" it.

Details also help us visualize the emotions of the people in the scene. The person who hands Stephen the coat hanger isn't just uncomfortable or nervous; he "takes a few steps back"—a description of movement that conveys feelings. Finally, the detail of actual speech makes the scene pop. Instead of writing that the other guy asked him to unlock the van, Stephen has the guy actually say his own words in a way that sounds like a teenager talking.

body_coathangers

Turning a Specific Incident Into a Deeper Insight

Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I'd been in this type of situation before. In fact, I'd been born into this type of situation.

Stephen makes the locked car experience a meaningful illustration of how he has learned to be resourceful and ready for anything, and he also makes this turn from the specific to the broad through an elegant play on the two meanings of the word "click."

Using Concrete Examples When Making Abstract Claims

My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally.

"Unpredictability and chaos" are very abstract, not easily visualized concepts. They could also mean any number of things—violence, abandonment, poverty, mental instability. By instantly following up with highly finite and unambiguous illustrations like "family of seven" and "siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing," Stephen grounds the abstraction in something that is easy to picture: a large, noisy family.

Using Small Bits of Humor and Casual Word Choice

My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed.

Obviously, knowing how to clean burning oil is not high on the list of things every 9-year-old needs to know. To emphasize this, Stephen uses sarcasm by bringing up a situation that is clearly over-the-top: "in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed."

The humor also feels relaxed. Part of this is because he introduces it with the colloquial phrase "you know," so it sounds like he is talking to us in person. This approach also diffuses the potential discomfort of the reader with his father's strictness—since he is making jokes about it, clearly he is OK. Notice, though, that this doesn't occur very much in the essay. This helps keep the tone meaningful and serious rather than flippant.

body-oil-spill

An Ending That Stretches the Insight Into the Future

But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: "How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?"

The ending of the essay reveals that Stephen's life has been one long preparation for the future. He has emerged from chaos and his dad's approach to parenting as a person who can thrive in a world that he can't control.

This connection of past experience to current maturity and self-knowledge is a key element in all successful personal essays. Colleges are very much looking for mature, self-aware applicants. These are the qualities of successful college students, who will be able to navigate the independence college classes require and the responsibility and quasi-adulthood of college life.

What Could This Essay Do Even Better?

Even the best essays aren't perfect, and even the world's greatest writers will tell you that writing is never "finished"—just "due." So what would we tweak in this essay if we could?

Replace some of the clichéd language. Stephen uses handy phrases like "twists and turns" and "don't sweat the small stuff" as a kind of shorthand for explaining his relationship to chaos and unpredictability. But using too many of these ready-made expressions runs the risk of clouding out your own voice and replacing it with something expected and boring.

Use another example from recent life. Stephen's first example (breaking into the van in Laredo) is a great illustration of being resourceful in an unexpected situation. But his essay also emphasizes that he "learned to adapt" by being "different things to different people." It would be great to see how this plays out outside his family, either in the situation in Laredo or another context.

Example 2: By Renner Kwittken, Tufts Class of '23 (Common App Essay, 645 words long)

My first dream job was to be a pickle truck driver. I saw it in my favorite book, Richard Scarry's "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go," and for some reason, I was absolutely obsessed with the idea of driving a giant pickle. Much to the discontent of my younger sister, I insisted that my parents read us that book as many nights as possible so we could find goldbug, a small little golden bug, on every page. I would imagine the wonderful life I would have: being a pig driving a giant pickle truck across the country, chasing and finding goldbug. I then moved on to wanting to be a Lego Master. Then an architect. Then a surgeon.

Then I discovered a real goldbug: gold nanoparticles that can reprogram macrophages to assist in killing tumors, produce clear images of them without sacrificing the subject, and heat them to obliteration.

Suddenly the destination of my pickle was clear.

I quickly became enveloped by the world of nanomedicine; I scoured articles about liposomes, polymeric micelles, dendrimers, targeting ligands, and self-assembling nanoparticles, all conquering cancer in some exotic way. Completely absorbed, I set out to find a mentor to dive even deeper into these topics. After several rejections, I was immensely grateful to receive an invitation to work alongside Dr. Sangeeta Ray at Johns Hopkins.

In the lab, Dr. Ray encouraged a great amount of autonomy to design and implement my own procedures. I chose to attack a problem that affects the entire field of nanomedicine: nanoparticles consistently fail to translate from animal studies into clinical trials. Jumping off recent literature, I set out to see if a pre-dose of a common chemotherapeutic could enhance nanoparticle delivery in aggressive prostate cancer, creating three novel constructs based on three different linear polymers, each using fluorescent dye (although no gold, sorry goldbug!). Though using radioactive isotopes like Gallium and Yttrium would have been incredible, as a 17-year-old, I unfortunately wasn't allowed in the same room as these radioactive materials (even though I took a Geiger counter to a pair of shoes and found them to be slightly dangerous).

I hadn't expected my hypothesis to work, as the research project would have ideally been led across two full years. Yet while there are still many optimizations and revisions to be done, I was thrilled to find -- with completely new nanoparticles that may one day mean future trials will use particles with the initials "RK-1" -- thatcyclophosphamide did indeed increase nanoparticle delivery to the tumor in a statistically significant way.

A secondary, unexpected research project was living alone in Baltimore, a new city to me, surrounded by people much older than I. Even with moving frequently between hotels, AirBnB's, and students' apartments, I strangely reveled in the freedom I had to enjoy my surroundings and form new friendships with graduate school students from the lab. We explored The Inner Harbor at night, attended a concert together one weekend, and even got to watch the Orioles lose (to nobody's surprise). Ironically, it's through these new friendships I discovered something unexpected: what I truly love is sharing research. Whether in a presentation or in a casual conversation, making others interested in science is perhaps more exciting to me than the research itself. This solidified a new pursuit to angle my love for writing towards illuminating science in ways people can understand, adding value to a society that can certainly benefit from more scientific literacy.

It seems fitting that my goals are still transforming: in Scarry's book, there is not just one goldbug, there is one on every page. With each new experience, I'm learning that it isn't the goldbug itself, but rather the act of searching for the goldbugs that will encourage, shape, and refine my ever-evolving passions. Regardless of the goldbug I seek -- I know my pickle truck has just begun its journey.

Renner takes a somewhat different approach than Stephen, but their essay is just as detailed and engaging. Let's go through some of the strengths of this essay.

One Clear Governing Metaphor

This essay is ultimately about two things: Renner’s dreams and future career goals, and Renner’s philosophy on goal-setting and achieving one’s dreams.

But instead of listing off all the amazing things they’ve done to pursue their dream of working in nanomedicine, Renner tells a powerful, unique story instead. To set up the narrative, Renner opens the essay by connecting their experiences with goal-setting and dream-chasing all the way back to a memorable childhood experience:

This lighthearted–but relevant!--story about the moment when Renner first developed a passion for a specific career (“finding the goldbug”) provides an anchor point for the rest of the essay. As Renner pivots to describing their current dreams and goals–working in nanomedicine–the metaphor of “finding the goldbug” is reflected in Renner’s experiments, rejections, and new discoveries.

Though Renner tells multiple stories about their quest to “find the goldbug,” or, in other words, pursue their passion, each story is connected by a unifying theme; namely, that as we search and grow over time, our goals will transform…and that’s okay! By the end of the essay, Renner uses the metaphor of “finding the goldbug” to reiterate the relevance of the opening story:

While the earlier parts of the essay convey Renner’s core message by showing, the final, concluding paragraph sums up Renner’s insights by telling. By briefly and clearly stating the relevance of the goldbug metaphor to their own philosophy on goals and dreams, Renner demonstrates their creativity, insight, and eagerness to grow and evolve as the journey continues into college.

body_fixers

An Engaging, Individual Voice

This essay uses many techniques that make Renner sound genuine and make the reader feel like we already know them.

Technique #1: humor. Notice Renner's gentle and relaxed humor that lightly mocks their younger self's grand ambitions (this is different from the more sarcastic kind of humor used by Stephen in the first essay—you could never mistake one writer for the other).

My first dream job was to be a pickle truck driver.

I would imagine the wonderful life I would have: being a pig driving a giant pickle truck across the country, chasing and finding goldbug. I then moved on to wanting to be a Lego Master. Then an architect. Then a surgeon.

Renner gives a great example of how to use humor to your advantage in college essays. You don’t want to come off as too self-deprecating or sarcastic, but telling a lightheartedly humorous story about your younger self that also showcases how you’ve grown and changed over time can set the right tone for your entire essay.

Technique #2: intentional, eye-catching structure. The second technique is the way Renner uses a unique structure to bolster the tone and themes of their essay . The structure of your essay can have a major impact on how your ideas come across…so it’s important to give it just as much thought as the content of your essay!

For instance, Renner does a great job of using one-line paragraphs to create dramatic emphasis and to make clear transitions from one phase of the story to the next:

Suddenly the destination of my pickle car was clear.

Not only does the one-liner above signal that Renner is moving into a new phase of the narrative (their nanoparticle research experiences), it also tells the reader that this is a big moment in Renner’s story. It’s clear that Renner made a major discovery that changed the course of their goal pursuit and dream-chasing. Through structure, Renner conveys excitement and entices the reader to keep pushing forward to the next part of the story.

Technique #3: playing with syntax. The third technique is to use sentences of varying length, syntax, and structure. Most of the essay's written in standard English and uses grammatically correct sentences. However, at key moments, Renner emphasizes that the reader needs to sit up and pay attention by switching to short, colloquial, differently punctuated, and sometimes fragmented sentences.

In the examples above, Renner switches adeptly between long, flowing sentences and quippy, telegraphic ones. At the same time, Renner uses these different sentence lengths intentionally. As they describe their experiences in new places, they use longer sentences to immerse the reader in the sights, smells, and sounds of those experiences. And when it’s time to get a big, key idea across, Renner switches to a short, punchy sentence to stop the reader in their tracks.

The varying syntax and sentence lengths pull the reader into the narrative and set up crucial “aha” moments when it’s most important…which is a surefire way to make any college essay stand out.

body-crying-upset-cc0

Renner's essay is very strong, but there are still a few little things that could be improved.

Connecting the research experiences to the theme of “finding the goldbug.”  The essay begins and ends with Renner’s connection to the idea of “finding the goldbug.” And while this metaphor is deftly tied into the essay’s intro and conclusion, it isn’t entirely clear what Renner’s big findings were during the research experiences that are described in the middle of the essay. It would be great to add a sentence or two stating what Renner’s big takeaways (or “goldbugs”) were from these experiences, which add more cohesion to the essay as a whole.

Give more details about discovering the world of nanomedicine. It makes sense that Renner wants to get into the details of their big research experiences as quickly as possible. After all, these are the details that show Renner’s dedication to nanomedicine! But a smoother transition from the opening pickle car/goldbug story to Renner’s “real goldbug” of nanoparticles would help the reader understand why nanoparticles became Renner’s goldbug. Finding out why Renner is so motivated to study nanomedicine–and perhaps what put them on to this field of study–would help readers fully understand why Renner chose this path in the first place.

4 Essential Tips for Writing Your Own Essay

How can you use this discussion to better your own college essay? Here are some suggestions for ways to use this resource effectively.

#1: Get Help From the Experts

Getting your college applications together takes a lot of work and can be pretty intimidatin g. Essays are even more important than ever now that admissions processes are changing and schools are going test-optional and removing diversity standards thanks to new Supreme Court rulings .  If you want certified expert help that really makes a difference, get started with  PrepScholar’s Essay Editing and Coaching program. Our program can help you put together an incredible essay from idea to completion so that your application stands out from the crowd. We've helped students get into the best colleges in the United States, including Harvard, Stanford, and Yale.  If you're ready to take the next step and boost your odds of getting into your dream school, connect with our experts today .

#2: Read Other Essays to Get Ideas for Your Own

As you go through the essays we've compiled for you above, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Can you explain to yourself (or someone else!) why the opening sentence works well?
  • Look for the essay's detailed personal anecdote. What senses is the author describing? Can you easily picture the scene in your mind's eye?
  • Find the place where this anecdote bridges into a larger insight about the author. How does the essay connect the two? How does the anecdote work as an example of the author's characteristic, trait, or skill?
  • Check out the essay's tone. If it's funny, can you find the places where the humor comes from? If it's sad and moving, can you find the imagery and description of feelings that make you moved? If it's serious, can you see how word choice adds to this tone?

Make a note whenever you find an essay or part of an essay that you think was particularly well-written, and think about what you like about it . Is it funny? Does it help you really get to know the writer? Does it show what makes the writer unique? Once you have your list, keep it next to you while writing your essay to remind yourself to try and use those same techniques in your own essay.

body-gears-cogs-puzzle-cc0

#3: Find Your "A-Ha!" Moment

All of these essays rely on connecting with the reader through a heartfelt, highly descriptive scene from the author's life. It can either be very dramatic (did you survive a plane crash?) or it can be completely mundane (did you finally beat your dad at Scrabble?). Either way, it should be personal and revealing about you, your personality, and the way you are now that you are entering the adult world.

Check out essays by authors like John Jeremiah Sullivan , Leslie Jamison , Hanif Abdurraqib , and Esmé Weijun Wang to get more examples of how to craft a compelling personal narrative.

#4: Start Early, Revise Often

Let me level with you: the best writing isn't writing at all. It's rewriting. And in order to have time to rewrite, you have to start way before the application deadline. My advice is to write your first draft at least two months before your applications are due.

Let it sit for a few days untouched. Then come back to it with fresh eyes and think critically about what you've written. What's extra? What's missing? What is in the wrong place? What doesn't make sense? Don't be afraid to take it apart and rearrange sections. Do this several times over, and your essay will be much better for it!

Durga Chew-Bose

Durga Chew-Bose: 'I don't really believe in writing as catharsis'

Too Much and Not the Mood is a lyrical collection of essays considering the human heart from many angles. She explains why she writes without a plan

“T he best ideas outrun me. That’s why I write,” Durga Chew-Bose muses in the opening essay of her first book, Too Much and Not the Mood. The relatively slim volume is packed with 14 evocative pieces that evidence that chase – from her childhood growing up in Montreal to her 20s in Brooklyn.

Just as Joan Didion homes in on small physical details, Chew-Bose loves painstakingly specific descriptions. In the sprawling, 90-page essay Heart Museum – named after an emoji – colours are “shell-pink” and a “lathery shade of peach”; a glass window doesn’t shatter, it is “veined”.

Also like Didion, Chew-Bose mines the content of her life for her writing. While the events recorded – Chew-Bose’s father has heart surgery, she takes a rickshaw ride in Mumbai, a friend gives her a Build-A-Bear heart – are wildly tangential, they are drawn together by a central motif of hearts. The gauzy, atmospheric mood that permeates her writing invites a reading experience more akin to listening to rainfall on a tile roof than hearing a song with a catchy chorus. Since there is often no decipherable beginning, middle, or end in these essays, it’s best to steep in a passage, rather than attempt to swim through to the other side.

We meet for breakfast at an old-timey diner in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where she is living for a semester while teaching at Sarah Lawrence, her alma mater. The syllabus for the class – a writing workshop called On Not Writing – is stacked with writers like Lydia Davis, Anaïs Nin, Sarah Manguso, who share Chew-Bose’s self-referential, probing writing style. “I don’t want [my students to write] traditional first-person narrative essays,” she says. “I want them to run before they can walk.” The class celebrates the kinds of writing – list-making, letter-writing, etc – that sustain and inform an enduring creative life.

The title comes from a line in Virginia Woolf’s A Writer’s Diary that Chew-Bose once underlined and Instagrammed; Woolf was frustrated with the pressure she felt to adjust her writing for her readers. Before Chew-Bose signed her book deal, an editor friend remarked that it should be the name of her first book. “I just liked the sequence of words,” Chew-Bose says. “Doesn’t it sound like a jazz album?”

In consolidating these essays – five of which were previously published – into book form, “there was no map or blueprint,” she says. “There was no big box in my room full of papers and journals and quotes and napkins with scribbles on them. There was no list that I was checking off.” If she is taken by someone or some object while walking or at the movies, she usually writes a note in her phone and emails it to herself. “I don’t really believe in writing as catharsis, but so much of it for me is trying to make sense of why I’m drawn to things. I love overthinking what turns me on.”

After living away from her parents for the past 13 years, she moved back to Montreal – where they both live – while writing this book. “There’s a certain type of adult who really romanticises proximity to parents, and I’m one of those people,” she says, adding that she views her collection as a gift to her mother. “I hope that it makes [my family] feel closer to me,” she says. “No matter how close you are to your family, you still don’t know how your daughter interprets the world.”

While some of the book touches on growing up as a first-generation kid in a predominately white neighbourhood, in others she expresses her feeling of displacement living in the US as a Canadian. “I felt strained living in the US for so long,” she says. “I felt temporary [in New York], and the temporariness of it was bubbling over for me.” She came to appreciate privileges she had previously taken for granted, like universal healthcare: “It changes who you are as a person, to grow up in a country where you don’t have to prove to the world you’re human to deserve those things.”

As Chew-Bose explains, the practice of writing requires “leaving the world behind, so you can hold fast to what’s strange inside, what’s unlit.” It follows then that the writer, perhaps like the reader, enjoys a certain degree of solitude and introspection. “Most of the women in my life are half-present because part of us is elsewhere. Whether it’s for self-preservation, or to get through the day, or [the nature of] being an introvert with a social life, we’re never 100% there.” In writing this book, she wanted to capture “that life that you’re living alongside your life”.

Too Much and Not the Mood

“When you’re on a deadline or reviewing a book or something, depending on the publication, there’s a voice you have to write, and for a specific readership. But with a book, it was really about becoming myself, or at least writing without the noise of expectation and audience,” she explains. “I write to four or five people my life and that’s it.”

Some readers will find that Chew-Bose relies on the descriptive power of her prose to the detriment of a narrative thrust, but this is only a problem if you’re a reader that finds plot-averse writing to be befuddling, or her lyrical style overwrought. But for some other readers, including myself, it is a delight to slip into someone else’s busy mind, take a look around, and find profound resonances.

“My writing often starts somewhere and goes to seven other places and then comes back,” Chew-Bose explains. “I like non-endings that feel final.”

These Precious Days

1. These Precious Days by Ann Patchett (Harper)

21 Rave • 3 Positive • 1 Mixed Read Ann Patchett on creating the work space you need, here

“… excellent … Patchett has a talent for friendship and celebrates many of those friends here. She writes with pure love for her mother, and with humor and some good-natured exasperation at Karl, who is such a great character he warrants a book of his own. Patchett’s account of his feigned offer to buy a woman’s newly adopted baby when she expresses unwarranted doubts is priceless … The days that Patchett refers to are precious indeed, but her writing is anything but. She describes deftly, with a line or a look, and I considered the absence of paragraphs freighted with adjectives to be a mercy. I don’t care about the hue of the sky or the shade of the couch. That’s not writing; it’s decorating. Or hiding. Patchett’s heart, smarts and 40 years of craft create an economy that delivers her perfectly understated stories emotionally whole. Her writing style is most gloriously her own.”

–Alex Witchel ( The New York Times Book Review )

2. Let Me Tell You What I Mean by Joan Didion (Knopf)

14 Rave • 12 Positive • 6 Mixed Read an excerpt from Let Me Tell You What I Mean here

“In five decades’ worth of essays, reportage and criticism, Didion has documented the charade implicit in how things are, in a first-person, observational style that is not sacrosanct but common-sensical. Seeing as a way of extrapolating hypocrisy, disingenuousness and doubt, she’ll notice the hydrangeas are plastic and mention it once, in passing, sorting the scene. Her gaze, like a sentry on the page, permanently trained on what is being disguised … The essays in Let Me Tell You What I Mean are at once funny and touching, roving and no-nonsense. They are about humiliation and about notions of rightness … Didion’s pen is like a periscope onto the creative mind—and, as this collection demonstrates, it always has been. These essays offer a direct line to what’s in the offing.”

–Durga Chew-Bose ( The New York Times Book Review )

3. Orwell’s Roses by Rebecca Solnit (Viking)

12 Rave • 13 Positive • 1 Mixed Read an excerpt from Orwell’s Roses here

“… on its simplest level, a tribute by one fine essayist of the political left to another of an earlier generation. But as with any of Solnit’s books, such a description would be reductive: the great pleasure of reading her is spending time with her mind, its digressions and juxtapositions, its unexpected connections. Only a few contemporary writers have the ability to start almost anywhere and lead the reader on paths that, while apparently meandering, compel unfailingly and feel, by the end, cosmically connected … Somehow, Solnit’s references to Ross Gay, Michael Pollan, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Peter Coyote (to name but a few) feel perfectly at home in the narrative; just as later chapters about an eighteenth-century portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds and a visit to the heart of the Colombian rose-growing industry seem inevitable and indispensable … The book provides a captivating account of Orwell as gardener, lover, parent, and endlessly curious thinker … And, movingly, she takes the time to find the traces of Orwell the gardener and lover of beauty in his political novels, and in his insistence on the value and pleasure of things .”

–Claire Messud ( Harper’s )

4. Girlhood by Melissa Febos (Bloomsbury)

16 Rave • 5 Positive • 1 Mixed Read an excerpt from Girlhood here

“Every once in a while, a book comes along that feels so definitive, so necessary, that not only do you want to tell everyone to read it now, but you also find yourself wanting to go back in time and tell your younger self that you will one day get to read something that will make your life make sense. Melissa Febos’s fierce nonfiction collection, Girlhood , might just be that book. Febos is one of our most passionate and profound essayists … Girlhood …offers us exquisite, ferocious language for embracing self-pleasure and self-love. It’s a book that women will wish they had when they were younger, and that they’ll rejoice in having now … Febos is a balletic memoirist whose capacious gaze can take in so many seemingly disparate things and unfurl them in a graceful, cohesive way … Intellectual and erotic, engaging and empowering[.]”

–Michelle Hart ( Oprah Daily )

Why Didn't You Just Do What You Were Told?

5. Why Didn’t You Just Do What You Were Told by Jenny Diski (Bloomsbury)

14 Rave • 7 Positive

“[Diski’s] reputation as an original, witty and cant-free thinker on the way we live now should be given a significant boost. Her prose is elegant and amused, as if to counter her native melancholia and includes frequent dips into memorable images … Like the ideal artist Henry James conjured up, on whom nothing is lost, Diski notices everything that comes her way … She is discerning about serious topics (madness and death) as well as less fraught material, such as fashion … in truth Diski’s first-person voice is like no other, selectively intimate but not overbearingly egotistic, like, say, Norman Mailer’s. It bears some resemblance to Joan Didion’s, if Didion were less skittish and insistently stylish and generated more warmth. What they have in common is their innate skepticism and the way they ask questions that wouldn’t occur to anyone else … Suffice it to say that our culture, enmeshed as it is in carefully arranged snapshots of real life, needs Jenny Diski, who, by her own admission, ‘never owned a camera, never taken one on holiday.’” It is all but impossible not to warm up to a writer who observes herself so keenly … I, in turn, wish there were more people around who thought like Diski. The world would be a more generous, less shallow and infinitely more intriguing place.”

–Daphne Merkin ( The New York Times Book Review )

6. The Hard Crowd: Essays 2000-2020 by Rachel Kushner (Scribner)

12 Rave • 7 Positive Listen to an interview with Rachel Kushner here

“Whether she’s writing about Jeff Koons, prison abolition or a Palestinian refugee camp in Jerusalem, [Kushner’s] interested in appearances, and in the deeper currents a surface detail might betray … Her writing is magnetised by outlaw sensibility, hard lives lived at a slant, art made in conditions of ferment and unrest, though she rarely serves a platter that isn’t style-mag ready … She makes a pretty convincing case for a political dimension to Jeff Koons’s vacuities and mirrored surfaces, engages repeatedly with the Italian avant garde and writes best of all about an artist friend whose death undoes a spell of nihilism … It’s not just that Kushner is looking back on the distant city of youth; more that she’s the sole survivor of a wild crowd done down by prison, drugs, untimely death … What she remembers is a whole world, but does the act of immortalising it in language also drain it of its power,’neon, in pink, red, and warm white, bleeding into the fog’? She’s mining a rich seam of specificity, her writing charged by the dangers she ran up against. And then there’s the frank pleasure of her sentences, often shorn of definite articles or odd words, so they rev and bucket along … That New Journalism style, live hard and keep your eyes open, has long since given way to the millennial cult of the personal essay, with its performance of pain, its earnest display of wounds received and lessons learned. But Kushner brings it all flooding back. Even if I’m skeptical of its dazzle, I’m glad to taste something this sharp, this smart.”

–Olivia Laing ( The Guardian )

7. The Right to Sex: Feminism in the Twenty-First Century by Amia Srinivasan (FSG)

12 Rave • 7 Positive • 5 Mixed • 1 Pan

“[A] quietly dazzling new essay collection … This is, needless to say, fraught terrain, and Srinivasan treads it with determination and skill … These essays are works of both criticism and imagination. Srinivasan refuses to resort to straw men; she will lay out even the most specious argument clearly and carefully, demonstrating its emotional power, even if her ultimate intention is to dismantle it … This, then, is a book that explicitly addresses intersectionality, even if Srinivasan is dissatisfied with the common—and reductive—understanding of the term … Srinivasan has written a compassionate book. She has also written a challenging one … Srinivasan proposes the kind of education enacted in this brilliant, rigorous book. She coaxes our imaginations out of the well-worn grooves of the existing order.”

–Jennifer Szalai ( The New York Times )

8. A Little Devil in America by Hanif Abdurraqib (Random House)

13 Rave • 4 Positive Listen to an interview with Hanif Abdurraqib here

“[A] wide, deep, and discerning inquest into the Beauty of Blackness as enacted on stages and screens, in unanimity and discord, on public airwaves and in intimate spaces … has brought to pop criticism and cultural history not just a poet’s lyricism and imagery but also a scholar’s rigor, a novelist’s sense of character and place, and a punk-rocker’s impulse to dislodge conventional wisdom from its moorings until something shakes loose and is exposed to audiences too lethargic to think or even react differently … Abdurraqib cherishes this power to enlarge oneself within or beyond real or imagined restrictions … Abdurraqib reminds readers of the massive viewing audience’s shock and awe over seeing one of the world’s biggest pop icons appearing midfield at this least radical of American rituals … Something about the seemingly insatiable hunger Abdurraqib shows for cultural transaction, paradoxical mischief, and Beauty in Blackness tells me he’ll get to such matters soon enough.”

–Gene Seymour ( Bookforum )

9. On Animals by Susan Orlean (Avid Reader Press)

11 Rave • 6 Positive • 1 Mixed Listen to an interview with Susan Orlean here

“I very much enjoyed Orlean’s perspective in these original, perceptive, and clever essays showcasing the sometimes strange, sometimes sick, sometimes tender relationships between people and animals … whether Orlean is writing about one couple’s quest to find their lost dog, the lives of working donkeys of the Fez medina in Morocco, or a man who rescues lions (and happily allows even full grown males to gently chew his head), her pages are crammed with quirky characters, telling details, and flabbergasting facts … Readers will find these pages full of astonishments … Orlean excels as a reporter…Such thorough reporting made me long for updates on some of these stories … But even this criticism only testifies to the delight of each of the urbane and vivid stories in this collection. Even though Orlean claims the animals she writes about remain enigmas, she makes us care about their fates. Readers will continue to think about these dogs and donkeys, tigers and lions, chickens and pigeons long after we close the book’s covers. I hope most of them are still well.”

–Sy Montgomery ( The Boston Globe )

10. Graceland, at Last: Notes on Hope and Heartache from the American South  by Margaret Renkl (Milkweed Editions)

9 Rave • 5 Positive Read Margaret Renkl on finding ideas everywhere, here

“Renkl’s sense of joyful belonging to the South, a region too often dismissed on both coasts in crude stereotypes and bad jokes, co-exists with her intense desire for Southerners who face prejudice or poverty finally to be embraced and supported … Renkl at her most tender and most fierce … Renkl’s gift, just as it was in her first book Late Migrations , is to make fascinating for others what is closest to her heart … Any initial sense of emotional whiplash faded as as I proceeded across the six sections and realized that the book is largely organized around one concept, that of fair and loving treatment for all—regardless of race, class, sex, gender or species … What rises in me after reading her essays is Lewis’ famous urging to get in good trouble to make the world fairer and better. Many people in the South are doing just that—and through her beautiful writing, Renkl is among them.”

–Barbara J. King ( NPR )

You can get information about sooooo many topics, sometimes in one single book! To prove that there are a zillion amazing essay collections out there, I compiled 50 great contemporary essay collections, just from the last 18 months alone.  Ranging in topics from food, nature, politics, sex, celebrity, and more, there is something here for everyone!

Must-Read Contemporary Essay Collections

They can’t kill us until they kill us  by hanif abdurraqib.

“In an age of confusion, fear, and loss, Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib’s is a voice that matters. Whether he’s attending a Bruce Springsteen concert the day after visiting Michael Brown’s grave, or discussing public displays of affection at a Carly Rae Jepsen show, he writes with a poignancy and magnetism that resonates profoundly.”

Would Everybody Please Stop?: Reflections on Life and Other Bad Ideas  by Jenny Allen

“Jenny Allen’s musings range fluidly from the personal to the philosophical. She writes with the familiarity of someone telling a dinner party anecdote, forgoing decorum for candor and comedy. To read  Would Everybody Please Stop?  is to experience life with imaginative and incisive humor.”

Longthroat Memoirs: Soups, Sex and Nigerian Taste Buds  by Yemisi Aribisala

“A sumptuous menu of essays about Nigerian cuisine, lovingly presented by the nation’s top epicurean writer. As well as a mouth-watering appraisal of Nigerian food,  Longthroat Memoirs  is a series of love letters to the Nigerian palate. From the cultural history of soup, to fish as aphrodisiac and the sensual allure of snails,  Longthroat Memoirs  explores the complexities, the meticulousness, and the tactile joy of Nigerian gastronomy.”

Beyond Measure: Essays  by Rachel Z. Arndt

“ Beyond Measure  is a fascinating exploration of the rituals, routines, metrics and expectations through which we attempt to quantify and ascribe value to our lives. With mordant humor and penetrating intellect, Arndt casts her gaze beyond event-driven narratives to the machinery underlying them: judo competitions measured in weigh-ins and wait times; the significance of the elliptical’s stationary churn; the rote scripts of dating apps; the stupefying sameness of the daily commute.”

Magic Hours  by Tom Bissell

“Award-winning essayist Tom Bissell explores the highs and lows of the creative process. He takes us from the set of  The Big Bang Theory  to the first novel of Ernest Hemingway to the final work of David Foster Wallace; from the films of Werner Herzog to the film of Tommy Wiseau to the editorial meeting in which Paula Fox’s work was relaunched into the world. Originally published in magazines such as  The Believer ,  The New Yorker , and  Harper’s , these essays represent ten years of Bissell’s best writing on every aspect of creation—be it Iraq War documentaries or video-game character voices—and will provoke as much thought as they do laughter.”

Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession  by Alice Bolin

“In this poignant collection, Alice Bolin examines iconic American works from the essays of Joan Didion and James Baldwin to  Twin Peaks , Britney Spears, and  Serial , illuminating the widespread obsession with women who are abused, killed, and disenfranchised, and whose bodies (dead and alive) are used as props to bolster men’s stories. Smart and accessible, thoughtful and heartfelt, Bolin investigates the implications of our cultural fixations, and her own role as a consumer and creator.”

Betwixt-and-Between: Essays on the Writing Life  by Jenny Boully

“Jenny Boully’s essays are ripe with romance and sensual pleasures, drawing connections between the digression, reflection, imagination, and experience that characterizes falling in love as well as the life of a writer. Literary theory, philosophy, and linguistics rub up against memory, dreamscapes, and fancy, making the practice of writing a metaphor for the illusory nature of experience.  Betwixt and Between  is, in many ways, simply a book about how to live.”

Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give by Ada Calhoun

“In  Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give , Ada Calhoun presents an unflinching but also loving portrait of her own marriage, opening a long-overdue conversation about the institution as it truly is: not the happy ending of a love story or a relic doomed by high divorce rates, but the beginning of a challenging new chapter of which ‘the first twenty years are the hardest.'”

How to Write an Autobiographical Novel: Essays  by Alexander Chee

“ How to Write an Autobiographical Novel  is the author’s manifesto on the entangling of life, literature, and politics, and how the lessons learned from a life spent reading and writing fiction have changed him. In these essays, he grows from student to teacher, reader to writer, and reckons with his identities as a son, a gay man, a Korean American, an artist, an activist, a lover, and a friend. He examines some of the most formative experiences of his life and the nation’s history, including his father’s death, the AIDS crisis, 9/11, the jobs that supported his writing—Tarot-reading, bookselling, cater-waiting for William F. Buckley—the writing of his first novel,  Edinburgh , and the election of Donald Trump.”

Too Much and Not the Mood: Essays  by Durga Chew-Bose

“ Too Much and Not the Mood is a beautiful and surprising exploration of what it means to be a first-generation, creative young woman working today. On April 11, 1931, Virginia Woolf ended her entry in A Writer’s Diary with the words ‘too much and not the mood’ to describe her frustration with placating her readers, what she described as the ‘cramming in and the cutting out.’ She wondered if she had anything at all that was truly worth saying. The attitude of that sentiment inspired Durga Chew-Bose to gather own writing in this lyrical collection of poetic essays that examine personhood and artistic growth. Drawing inspiration from a diverse group of incisive and inquiring female authors, Chew-Bose captures the inner restlessness that keeps her always on the brink of creative expression.”

We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy  by Ta-Nehisi Coates

“‘We were eight years in power’ was the lament of Reconstruction-era black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. In this sweeping collection of new and selected essays, Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America’s ‘first white president.'”

Look Alive Out There: Essays by Sloane Crosley

“In  Look Alive Out There,  whether it’s scaling active volcanoes, crashing shivas, playing herself on  Gossip Girl,  befriending swingers, or squinting down the barrel of the fertility gun, Crosley continues to rise to the occasion with unmatchable nerve and electric one-liners. And as her subjects become more serious, her essays deliver not just laughs but lasting emotional heft and insight. Crosley has taken up the gauntlets thrown by her predecessors—Dorothy Parker, Nora Ephron, David Sedaris—and crafted something rare, affecting, and true.”

Fl â neuse: Women Walk the City in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice, and London  by Lauren Elkin

“Part cultural meander, part memoir,  Flâneuse  takes us on a distinctly cosmopolitan jaunt that begins in New York, where Elkin grew up, and transports us to Paris via Venice, Tokyo, and London, all cities in which she’s lived. We are shown the paths beaten by such  flâneuses  as the cross-dressing nineteenth-century novelist George Sand, the Parisian artist Sophie Calle, the wartime correspondent Martha Gellhorn, and the writer Jean Rhys. With tenacity and insight, Elkin creates a mosaic of what urban settings have meant to women, charting through literature, art, history, and film the sometimes exhilarating, sometimes fraught relationship that women have with the metropolis.”

Idiophone  by Amy Fusselman

“Leaping from ballet to quiltmaking, from the The Nutcracker to an Annie-B Parson interview,  Idiophone  is a strikingly original meditation on risk-taking and provocation in art and a unabashedly honest, funny, and intimate consideration of art-making in the context of motherhood, and motherhood in the context of addiction. Amy Fusselman’s compact, beautifully digressive essay feels both surprising and effortless, fueled by broad-ranging curiosity, and, fundamentally, joy.”

Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture  by Roxane Gay

“In this valuable and revealing anthology, cultural critic and bestselling author Roxane Gay collects original and previously published pieces that address what it means to live in a world where women have to measure the harassment, violence, and aggression they face, and where they are ‘routinely second-guessed, blown off, discredited, denigrated, besmirched, belittled, patronized, mocked, shamed, gaslit, insulted, bullied’ for speaking out.”

Sunshine State: Essays  by Sarah Gerard

“With the personal insight of  The Empathy Exams , the societal exposal of  Nickel and Dimed , and the stylistic innovation and intensity of her own break-out debut novel  Binary Star , Sarah Gerard’s  Sunshine State  uses the intimately personal to unearth the deep reservoirs of humanity buried in the corners of our world often hardest to face.”

The Art of the Wasted Day  by Patricia Hampl

“ The Art of the Wasted Day  is a picaresque travelogue of leisure written from a lifelong enchantment with solitude. Patricia Hampl visits the homes of historic exemplars of ease who made repose a goal, even an art form. She begins with two celebrated eighteenth-century Irish ladies who ran off to live a life of ‘retirement’ in rural Wales. Her search then leads to Moravia to consider the monk-geneticist, Gregor Mendel, and finally to Bordeaux for Michel Montaigne—the hero of this book—who retreated from court life to sit in his chateau tower and write about whatever passed through his mind, thus inventing the personal essay.”

A Really Big Lunch: The Roving Gourmand on Food and Life  by Jim Harrison

“Jim Harrison’s legendary gourmandise is on full display in  A Really Big Lunch . From the titular  New Yorker  piece about a French lunch that went to thirty-seven courses, to pieces from  Brick ,  Playboy , Kermit Lynch Newsletter, and more on the relationship between hunter and prey, or the obscure language of wine reviews,  A Really Big Lunch  is shot through with Harrison’s pointed aperçus and keen delight in the pleasures of the senses. And between the lines the pieces give glimpses of Harrison’s life over the last three decades.  A Really Big Lunch  is a literary delight that will satisfy every appetite.”

Insomniac City: New York, Oliver, and Me  by Bill Hayes

“Bill Hayes came to New York City in 2009 with a one-way ticket and only the vaguest idea of how he would get by. But, at forty-eight years old, having spent decades in San Francisco, he craved change. Grieving over the death of his partner, he quickly discovered the profound consolations of the city’s incessant rhythms, the sight of the Empire State Building against the night sky, and New Yorkers themselves, kindred souls that Hayes, a lifelong insomniac, encountered on late-night strolls with his camera.”

Would You Rather?: A Memoir of Growing Up and Coming Out  by Katie Heaney

“Here, for the first time, Katie opens up about realizing at the age of twenty-eight that she is gay. In these poignant, funny essays, she wrestles with her shifting sexuality and identity, and describes what it was like coming out to everyone she knows (and everyone she doesn’t). As she revisits her past, looking for any ‘clues’ that might have predicted this outcome, Katie reveals that life doesn’t always move directly from point A to point B—no matter how much we would like it to.”

Tonight I’m Someone Else: Essays  by Chelsea Hodson

“From graffiti gangs and  Grand Theft Auto  to sugar daddies, Schopenhauer, and a deadly game of Russian roulette, in these essays, Chelsea Hodson probes her own desires to examine where the physical and the proprietary collide. She asks what our privacy, our intimacy, and our own bodies are worth in the increasingly digital world of liking, linking, and sharing.”

We Are Never Meeting in Real Life.: Essays  by Samantha Irby

“With  We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. , ‘bitches gotta eat’ blogger and comedian Samantha Irby turns the serio-comic essay into an art form. Whether talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making ‘adult’ budgets, explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette—she’s ’35-ish, but could easily pass for 60-something’—detailing a disastrous pilgrimage-slash-romantic-vacation to Nashville to scatter her estranged father’s ashes, sharing awkward sexual encounters, or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now suburban moms—hang in there for the Costco loot—she’s as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths.”

This Will Be My Undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female, and Feminist in (White) America  by Morgan Jerkins

“Doubly disenfranchised by race and gender, often deprived of a place within the mostly white mainstream feminist movement, black women are objectified, silenced, and marginalized with devastating consequences, in ways both obvious and subtle, that are rarely acknowledged in our country’s larger discussion about inequality. In  This Will Be My Undoing , Jerkins becomes both narrator and subject to expose the social, cultural, and historical story of black female oppression that influences the black community as well as the white, male-dominated world at large.”

Everywhere Home: A Life in Essays  by Fenton Johnson

“Part retrospective, part memoir, Fenton Johnson’s collection  Everywhere Home: A Life in Essays  explores sexuality, religion, geography, the AIDS crisis, and more. Johnson’s wanderings take him from the hills of Kentucky to those of San Francisco, from the streets of Paris to the sidewalks of Calcutta. Along the way, he investigates questions large and small: What’s the relationship between artists and museums, illuminated in a New Guinean display of shrunken heads? What’s the difference between empiricism and intuition?”

One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter: Essays  by Scaachi Koul

“In  One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter , Scaachi Koul deploys her razor-sharp humor to share all the fears, outrages, and mortifying moments of her life. She learned from an early age what made her miserable, and for Scaachi anything can be cause for despair. Whether it’s a shopping trip gone awry; enduring awkward conversations with her bikini waxer; overcoming her fear of flying while vacationing halfway around the world; dealing with Internet trolls, or navigating the fears and anxieties of her parents. Alongside these personal stories are pointed observations about life as a woman of color: where every aspect of her appearance is open for critique, derision, or outright scorn; where strict gender rules bind in both Western and Indian cultures, leaving little room for a woman not solely focused on marriage and children to have a career (and a life) for herself.”

Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in 40 Questions  by Valeria Luiselli and jon lee anderson (translator)

“A damning confrontation between the American dream and the reality of undocumented children seeking a new life in the U.S. Structured around the 40 questions Luiselli translates and asks undocumented Latin American children facing deportation,  Tell Me How It Ends  (an expansion of her 2016 Freeman’s essay of the same name) humanizes these young migrants and highlights the contradiction between the idea of America as a fiction for immigrants and the reality of racism and fear—both here and back home.”

All the Lives I Want: Essays About My Best Friends Who Happen to Be Famous Strangers  by Alana Massey

“Mixing Didion’s affected cool with moments of giddy celebrity worship, Massey examines the lives of the women who reflect our greatest aspirations and darkest fears back onto us. These essays are personal without being confessional and clever in a way that invites readers into the joke. A cultural critique and a finely wrought fan letter, interwoven with stories that are achingly personal, All the Lives I Want is also an exploration of mental illness, the sex industry, and the dangers of loving too hard.”

Typewriters, Bombs, Jellyfish: Essays  by Tom McCarthy

“Certain points of reference recur with dreamlike insistence—among them the artist Ed Ruscha’s  Royal Road Test , a photographic documentation of the roadside debris of a Royal typewriter hurled from the window of a traveling car; the great blooms of jellyfish that are filling the oceans and gumming up the machinery of commerce and military domination—and the question throughout is: How can art explode the restraining conventions of so-called realism, whether aesthetic or political, to engage in the active reinvention of the world?”

Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance, and Revolution in Trump’s America  by Samhita Mukhopadhyay and Kate Harding

“When 53 percent of white women voted for Donald Trump and 94 percent of black women voted for Hillary Clinton, how can women unite in Trump’s America? Nasty Women includes inspiring essays from a diverse group of talented women writers who seek to provide a broad look at how we got here and what we need to do to move forward.”

Don’t Call Me Princess: Essays on Girls, Women, Sex, and Life  by Peggy Orenstein

“Named one of the ’40 women who changed the media business in the last 40 years’ by  Columbia Journalism Review , Peggy Orenstein is one of the most prominent, unflinching feminist voices of our time. Her writing has broken ground and broken silences on topics as wide-ranging as miscarriage, motherhood, breast cancer, princess culture and the importance of girls’ sexual pleasure. Her unique blend of investigative reporting, personal revelation and unexpected humor has made her books bestselling classics.”

When You Find Out the World Is Against You: And Other Funny Memories About Awful Moments  by Kelly Oxford

“Kelly Oxford likes to blow up the internet. Whether it is with the kind of Tweets that lead  Rolling Stone  to name her one of the Funniest People on Twitter or with pictures of her hilariously adorable family (human and animal) or with something much more serious, like creating the hashtag #NotOkay, where millions of women came together to share their stories of sexual assault, Kelly has a unique, razor-sharp perspective on modern life. As a screen writer, professional sh*t disturber, wife and mother of three, Kelly is about everything but the status quo.”

Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman  by Anne Helen Petersen

“You know the type: the woman who won’t shut up, who’s too brazen, too opinionated—too much. She’s the unruly woman, and she embodies one of the most provocative and powerful forms of womanhood today. In  Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud , Anne Helen Petersen uses the lens of ‘unruliness’ to explore the ascension of pop culture powerhouses like Lena Dunham, Nicki Minaj, and Kim Kardashian, exploring why the public loves to love (and hate) these controversial figures. With its brisk, incisive analysis,  Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud  will be a conversation-starting book on what makes and breaks celebrity today.”

Well, That Escalated Quickly: Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist  by Franchesca Ramsey

“In her first book, Ramsey uses her own experiences as an accidental activist to explore the many ways we communicate with each other—from the highs of bridging gaps and making connections to the many pitfalls that accompany talking about race, power, sexuality, and gender in an unpredictable public space…the internet.”

Shrewed: A Wry and Closely Observed Look at the Lives of Women and Girls  by Elizabeth Renzetti

“Drawing upon Renzetti’s decades of reporting on feminist issues,  Shrewed  is a book about feminism’s crossroads. From Hillary Clinton’s failed campaign to the quest for equal pay, from the lessons we can learn from old ladies to the future of feminism in a turbulent world, Renzetti takes a pointed, witty look at how far we’ve come—and how far we have to go.”

What Are We Doing Here?: Essays  by Marilynne Robinson

“In this new essay collection she trains her incisive mind on our modern political climate and the mysteries of faith. Whether she is investigating how the work of great thinkers about America like Emerson and Tocqueville inform our political consciousness or discussing the way that beauty informs and disciplines daily life, Robinson’s peerless prose and boundless humanity are on full display.”

Double Bind: Women on Ambition  by Robin Romm

“‘A work of courage and ferocious honesty’ (Diana Abu-Jaber),  Double Bind  could not come at a more urgent time. Even as major figures from Gloria Steinem to Beyoncé embrace the word ‘feminism,’ the word ‘ambition’ remains loaded with ambivalence. Many women see it as synonymous with strident or aggressive, yet most feel compelled to strive and achieve—the seeming contradiction leaving them in a perpetual double bind. Ayana Mathis, Molly Ringwald, Roxane Gay, and a constellation of ‘nimble thinkers . . . dismantle this maddening paradox’ ( O, The Oprah Magazine ) with candor, wit, and rage. Women who have made landmark achievements in fields as diverse as law, dog sledding, and butchery weigh in, breaking the last feminist taboo once and for all.”

The Destiny Thief: Essays on Writing, Writers and Life  by Richard Russo

“In these nine essays, Richard Russo provides insight into his life as a writer, teacher, friend, and reader. From a commencement speech he gave at Colby College, to the story of how an oddly placed toilet made him reevaluate the purpose of humor in art and life, to a comprehensive analysis of Mark Twain’s value, to his harrowing journey accompanying a dear friend as she pursued gender-reassignment surgery,  The Destiny Thief  reflects the broad interests and experiences of one of America’s most beloved authors. Warm, funny, wise, and poignant, the essays included here traverse Russo’s writing life, expanding our understanding of who he is and how his singular, incredibly generous mind works. An utter joy to read, they give deep insight into the creative process from the prospective of one of our greatest writers.”

Curry: Eating, Reading, and Race by Naben Ruthnum

“Curry is a dish that doesn’t quite exist, but, as this wildly funny and sharp essay points out, a dish that doesn’t properly exist can have infinite, equally authentic variations. By grappling with novels, recipes, travelogues, pop culture, and his own upbringing, Naben Ruthnum depicts how the distinctive taste of curry has often become maladroit shorthand for brown identity. With the sardonic wit of Gita Mehta’s  Karma Cola  and the refined, obsessive palette of Bill Buford’s  Heat , Ruthnum sinks his teeth into the story of how the beloved flavor calcified into an aesthetic genre that limits the imaginations of writers, readers, and eaters.”

The River of Consciousness  by Oliver Sacks

“Sacks, an Oxford-educated polymath, had a deep familiarity not only with literature and medicine but with botany, animal anatomy, chemistry, the history of science, philosophy, and psychology.  The River of Consciousness  is one of two books Sacks was working on up to his death, and it reveals his ability to make unexpected connections, his sheer joy in knowledge, and his unceasing, timeless project to understand what makes us human.”

All the Women in My Family Sing: Women Write the World: Essays on Equality, Justice, and Freedom (Nothing But the Truth So Help Me God)  by Deborah Santana and America Ferrera

“ All the Women in My Family Sing  is an anthology documenting the experiences of women of color at the dawn of the twenty-first century. It is a vital collection of prose and poetry whose topics range from the pressures of being the vice-president of a Fortune 500 Company, to escaping the killing fields of Cambodia, to the struggles inside immigration, identity, romance, and self-worth. These brief, trenchant essays capture the aspirations and wisdom of women of color as they exercise autonomy, creativity, and dignity and build bridges to heal the brokenness in today’s turbulent world.”

We Wear the Mask: 15 True Stories of Passing in America  by Brando Skyhorse and Lisa Page

“For some, ‘passing’ means opportunity, access, or safety. Others don’t willingly pass but are ‘passed’ in specific situations by someone else.  We Wear the Mask , edited by  Brando Skyhorse  and  Lisa Page , is an illuminating and timely anthology that examines the complex reality of passing in America. Skyhorse, a Mexican American, writes about how his mother passed him as an American Indian before he learned who he really is. Page shares how her white mother didn’t tell friends about her black ex-husband or that her children were, in fact, biracial.”

Feel Free: Essays by Zadie Smith

“Since she burst spectacularly into view with her debut novel almost two decades ago, Zadie Smith has established herself not just as one of the world’s preeminent fiction writers, but also a brilliant and singular essayist. She contributes regularly to  The New Yorker  and the  New York Review of Books  on a range of subjects, and each piece of hers is a literary event in its own right.”

The Mother of All Questions: Further Reports from the Feminist Revolutions  by Rebecca Solnit

“In a timely follow-up to her national bestseller  Men Explain Things to Me , Rebecca Solnit offers indispensable commentary on women who refuse to be silenced, misogynistic violence, the fragile masculinity of the literary canon, the gender binary, the recent history of rape jokes, and much more. In characteristic style, Solnit mixes humor, keen analysis, and powerful insight in these essays.”

The Wrong Way to Save Your Life: Essays  by Megan Stielstra

“Whether she’s imagining the implications of open-carry laws on college campuses, recounting the story of going underwater on the mortgage of her first home, or revealing the unexpected pains and joys of marriage and motherhood, Stielstra’s work informs, impels, enlightens, and embraces us all. The result is something beautiful—this story, her courage, and, potentially, our own.”

Against Memoir: Complaints, Confessions & Criticisms  by Michelle Tea

“Delivered with her signature honesty and dark humor, this is Tea’s first-ever collection of journalistic writing. As she blurs the line between telling other people’s stories and her own, she turns an investigative eye to the genre that’s nurtured her entire career—memoir—and considers the price that art demands be paid from life.”

A Twenty Minute Silence Followed by Applause  by Shawn Wen

“In precise, jewel-like scenes and vignettes,  A Twenty Minute Silence Followed by Applause  pays homage to the singular genius of a mostly-forgotten art form. Drawing on interviews, archival research, and meticulously observed performances, Wen translates the gestural language of mime into a lyric written portrait by turns whimsical, melancholic, and haunting.”

Acid West: Essays  by Joshua Wheeler

“The radical evolution of American identity, from cowboys to drone warriors to space explorers, is a story rooted in southern New Mexico.  Acid West  illuminates this history, clawing at the bounds of genre to reveal a place that is, for better or worse, home. By turns intimate, absurd, and frightening,  Acid West  is an enlightening deep-dive into a prophetic desert at the bottom of America.”

Sexographies  by Gabriela Wiener and Lucy Greaves And jennifer adcock (Translators)

“In fierce and sumptuous first-person accounts, renowned Peruvian journalist Gabriela Wiener records infiltrating the most dangerous Peruvian prison, participating in sexual exchanges in swingers clubs, traveling the dark paths of the Bois de Boulogne in Paris in the company of transvestites and prostitutes, undergoing a complicated process of egg donation, and participating in a ritual of ayahuasca ingestion in the Amazon jungle—all while taking us on inward journeys that explore immigration, maternity, fear of death, ugliness, and threesomes. Fortunately, our eagle-eyed voyeur emerges from her narrative forays unscathed and ready to take on the kinks, obsessions, and messiness of our lives.  Sexographies  is an eye-opening, kamikaze journey across the contours of the human body and mind.”

As our modern lives shift dramatically indoors, these ideas—and the answers they yield—are more urgent than ever.”

“ Can You Tolerate This?  presents a vivid self-portrait of an introspective yet widely curious young woman, the colorful, isolated community in which she comes of age, and the uneasy tensions—between safety and risk, love and solitude, the catharsis of grief and the ecstasy of creation—that define our lives.”

Our favorite noise-canceling headphones are $50 off during Amazon's Big Spring sale

If you're in the market for a pair of headphones with great sound, superb noise-canceling, and all-day comfort, ZDNET recommends the Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones . The QuietComfort Ultra are our top pick for over-ear headphones , and they're on sale right now through Amazon's Big Spring Sale.

Usually, these headphones retail for $429, but you can snag them for $379. The QuietComfort Ultra are newer than Sony's WH-1000XM5 and Apple's AirPods Max , making their $379 discounted price a steal. I wear the QuietComfort Ultra headphones most days of the week when I'm working at my desk, watching movies, and listening to music.

If you frequently travel, commute, work at a desk, study in public areas, or just need quiet time away from the bustling world around you, Bose's best-in-class active noise canceling (ANC) technology won't disappoint. I've tried many noise-canceling headphones , and none can hold to candle to the QuietComfort Ultra's ANC tech, including those from Sony and Apple.

Not to mention, Bose puts the comfort in QuietComfort, as the QuietComfort Ultra sport thick, breathable vegan leather padded ear cups for optimal comfort.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra for $379 (save $50)

If you like spatial audio, Bose debuted its Immersive Audio technology in the QuietComfort Ultra headphones. This tech allows you to make any song multidimensional, regardless of your streaming service or listening device. The QuietComfort Ultra boast improved call clarity, advanced Bluetooth codecs, seamless Bluetooth multipoint connectivity, and an intuitive companion app.

Their stylish and durable aluminum build means they'll blend with any outfit you put together and survive some short drops when you're out and about. The QuietComfort Ultra have a 24-hour battery life, which isn't the longest you'll find. However, to me, the way these headphones excel in every other category makes up for needing to plug in a few times a week.

If you've heard bad things about Bose's sound quality, the QuietComfort Ultra will change your mind. These headphones are the best from Bose, offering deep, immersive bass and clear highs that aren't too piercing. I enjoy listening to all music genres with these headphones, and regularly watch movies and listen to podcasts, too.

The Bose Music app houses many personalization features that can tweak your audio depending on what you're listening too. Additionally, the companion app offers noise-canceling personalization and settings to alter microphone quality and wind reduction.

If you're looking for headphones with a list of future-proof features, enjoyable sound, superior noise-canceling, a stylish design, and an insane amount of comfort, you won't regret investing in the Bose QuietComfort Ultra .

A black-and-white illustration from the original 1924 version of the book shows three of the four children (Jessie, Violet and Benny) sitting outside under a tree gazing lovingly at the “treasures” they’ve gathered from a nearby dump, as their adopted dog looks on. Jessie holds a dish, Violet holds iron spoons that match a big iron kettle and Benny holds a cup.

It Was Enough to Make You Wish You Lived in a Boxcar

Gertrude Chandler Warner’s “The Boxcar Children,” celebrating its 100th year, depicts the delights of concocting scrumptious meals.

It was the food. It was always about the food.

At first, bread, butter, wild blueberries. Later, dried beef and “precious little vegetables” like onions, carrots, potatoes and parsnips. Later still, ginger cookies with scalloped edges, doughnuts and something called cherry slump. This was a meal, Gertrude Chandler Warner writes, “that nobody ever forgot.”

It was enough to make you wish you lived in a boxcar.

Of course, in order to live in that boxcar you would have to have lost your parents (including a father who drank himself to death) and been on the run from “authorities” (in this case, concerned adults) who might want to separate you from your siblings or hand you over to your paternal grandfather — a man you heard was cruel.

All these things would have to have happened, which is part of the appeal of Warner’s “The Boxcar Children,” celebrating its 100th year (a milestone Penguin Random House will honor with a special anniversary edition in the fall).

A black-and-white silhouette from the 1942 version of the book shows all four children sitting on the ground as they divide up two small loaves of bread between them.

Warner, a grade school teacher who as a little girl loved watching the trains go by from her home in Putnam, Conn., wrote 19 installments of the series, and ghostwriters wrote over a hundred more.

The original book tells the story of the orphaned Alden siblings (Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny), who strike out on their own and find refuge in an abandoned boxcar, which they gussy up with treasures (cups, hay beds, a pitcher with a small chip in its “nose”) from a nearby dump. I first read it in 1981 or 1982, when I was 8 or 9. I found a copy, with a worn cloth cover encased in plastic, at my local library; devoured it in two, maybe three sittings; and never forgot it. (The version the publisher sent me before I wrote this essay is the “simpler” one abridged by Warner in 1942 to make it more accessible to young children.)

It’s an unassuming yet captivating book, depicting a sort of fantasy world with no (or very few) adults, a secret hideaway and the delights of junior domesticity — playing “house” and concocting scrumptious meals. It’s like reading about a group of kids who’ve gone camping without counselors.

The Alden children aren’t presented as confronting acute or sustained food insecurity. Warner only briefly mentions her fictional charges suffering from pangs of hunger, and that’s just in the beginning. (The baby of the bunch, 5-year-old Benny, is the most anxious in terms of having enough to eat.) But food — along with cleaning (dishes, clothes, the interior of the boxcar, themselves) — is a constant theme: the procuring of it, the preparation of it, the eating of it, the squirreling away of it, the anticipation of it. And, in some cases (blueberries and cherries), the literal harvesting of it. (None of the Aldens’ food is stolen from others, unless you count a few eggs from the nest of a runaway chicken that they find while traipsing through the woods.) Henry even gets their adopted dog, Watch, his own bone.

Food figures prominently in other children’s books, of course — most notably the “Little House” books, but also “Harriet the Spy” and “All-of-a-Kind Family,” whose female protagonists, from very different milieus, generations and cultural backgrounds, encounter any number of goodies while on their adventures. Harriet, who likes tomato sandwiches, milk and cake, lives near an Italian grocery, a frequent stop on her spy route; the five girls of “All-of-a-Kind Family” spend the pennies and nickels they save on treats like candies, pickles and crackers.

But the food in “The Boxcar Children” is so central, so memorable. For the Alden children the days and hours are marked not by school lessons or play dates but by meals and the position of the sun.

Bread is “fragrant,” with “crusty ends.” Cheese in wax paper is “golden.” Early in the book, Jessie, a “little housekeeper” in line with the gender roles of the time, devises a makeshift refrigerator: a small pool of water in which she stores milk (“cold as ice”) and butter (“cool and sweet”).

A couple of weeks ago, a friend who has written extensively about children’s literature, Lizzie Skurnick, 51, was visiting my home in Los Angeles and spotted a copy of “The Boxcar Children” on my coffee table. “I loved that book — the food!” she exclaimed. When I spoke to her later, she elaborated on what she meant, saying she sees food in “The Boxcar Children,” and other children’s books in which it plays a starring role, as a signifier for building social relationships and bonds and asserting autonomy.

“Each time these kids are successful with food, it’s like they’ve recreated a little bit of the adult world in their outside world,” she explained.

“In the real world, most children have food handed to them. But in children’s books, harvesting and maintaining and fixing, or scavenging or buying, one’s own food is an act of independence. So figuring out that the butter needs to go in the stream is like solving a puzzle; it’s an act of adult invention. Whereas little kids would let their butter spoil, big kids can figure out how to make a house out of an old boxcar.”

A woman of an older generation, the retired English professor Barbara Traister, 80, read “The Boxcar Children” growing up. She, too, remembers the food. “It’s such an essential thing for kids,” she told me from her home in Philadelphia. “‘What are we going to eat today?’ ‘Mom, can I have a snack?’ Children’s writers — good ones — pick up on that. Think of Winnie the Pooh. He’s always worried about his honey, and Piglet is always looking for his acorns.”

By the end of “The Boxcar Children” — the first book, that is — Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny have been reunited (or, perhaps more accurately, united) with their grandfather, who turns out to be kind rather than cruel. They’ve made a new home in the wealthy man’s mansion, where each child has a room of his or her own in which to sleep and Jessie has a big kitchen in which to cook.

Yet the children miss their old boxcar.

Soon enough, to their pleasant surprise, their beloved former home has been secretly trucked in to live out its days on their grandfather’s sprawling property.

“Everything was in place,” Warner writes. “Here was Benny’s pink cup, and here was his bed. Here was the old knife which had cut butter and bread, and vegetables, and firewood, and string, and here were the letters for Benny’s primer. Here was the big kettle and the tablecloth. And hanging on a nearby tree was the old dinner bell. Benny rang the bell over and over again, and Watch rolled on the floor and barked himself hoarse.”

This database includes hundreds of thousands of college essays, research papers, and other academic materials.

Nonetheless, using a reputable essay writing service can effectively address this concern. A professional writer draws upon their own knowledge and creative insights to craft a plagiarism-free paper. They ensure that any use of external thoughts or ideas is properly cited, avoiding plagiarism.

Furthermore, Turnitin has a feature that compares your assignment to your previous works, potentially identifying differences in style and tone. However, this should not be a problem either. If you choose to buy essay papers online, be sure to provide your academic writer with with samples of your past writings. This enables them to mimic your writing style closely.

Is it safe to buy essays online?

Buying an essay on web platforms is absolutely safe as long as you stick to some important rules. First of all, you should always use anonymous profiles to protect your privacy. To ensure confidentiality, don’t provide any details about your educational institution, instructors, etc. In general, keep all your personal information secret.

It’s also important to stay away from public internet services because every time you use them, you leave digital footprints. As a result, you can be tracked down by hackers. So if you don’t want anybody to reveal your identity, you should hide your IP address.

It’s easy to do with the help of a VPN, which can be downloaded as an extension or software. This tool will mask your internet activities and prevent others from getting access to your data.

Before you decide to purchase a paper from a particular company, do proper research of the essay service you are going to use. Don’t turn to the first companies that pop up on your Google search until you check them. Obviously, it’s better to order an essay from a reputable site. Note that reliable agencies always have a lot of positive reviews on the web, so read as many comments as possible.

If you follow the recommendations given above, you shouldn’t worry about safety issues.

How much does it cost to buy an essay?

The prices for essay writing services vary significantly from one company to another. On average, a professional writer with an advanced degree and extensive experience charges between $10 and $30 per page. However, the rates depend on multiple factors. It’s possible to buy essay online for a lower price, but it’s better not to take the risk. The chances are that a cheap essay will be plagiarized or poorly written.

First of all, essay cost depends on task complexity. If you need to get a high school essay written, you will have to pay less than for a college or university essay. So the higher the academic level you have, the more you will pay for your order.

Also, your expenses depend on the type of platform you are turning to. Reputable companies usually set higher prices for their services since they provide guarantees for the quality of their work. Best writers and native speakers also charge more for their services than ESL specialists or those without a degree. Another important factor affecting the price is your deadline date. If it’s too close, you’ll have to pay extra.

Who will write my essay?

Some websites give you detailed information about their writers, allowing you to check the list of professionals at a particular company and pick one that meets your requirements. Pay special attention to the qualifications of your writer and their amount of experience.

However, remember that having a decent education and incredible experience doesn’t always guarantee top quality. Sometimes, less experienced writers are extremely dedicated to their work and can deliver excellent papers. Unfortunately, you never really know who will write your essay better.

Credible companies typically hire skilled specialists with Master’s or Ph.D. degrees, who might be teachers, researchers, or even professors. It’s quite common because many academics enjoy writing and take it up as a part-time job. Imagine, your essay could be written by a world-renowned scientist without you even knowing it!

Papers may be completed by both native English speakers and non-natives. Some students think that native speakers never make mistakes and their work is flawless. However, this isn’t always the case since they’re just human and can struggle with a loss of concentration or poor focus.

On the other hand, non-native writers at essay services often have an excellent command of English. Before being hired, they must provide certificates proving their language skills, so you can be confident in their knowledge.”

How soon can I have my essay written?

Any student faces a situation when a paper must be done urgently. It’s really stressful when only a few hours are left to submit your essay. In such circumstances, it may be risky to completely rely on somebody and ask for help. But what if there is nothing else to do? The good news is that custom writing companies can deal with your assignment within 3 hours. Of course, it won’t be cheap since you need to pay extra for urgency. Also, it works this way only if you need to have a short essay done. In case its length exceeds one page, you’ll have to wait from four to six hours at least.

The optimal deadline for most services is 14 days. If you set such time limits, you can count on good work and moderate prices. The more time you give to writers, the less you’ll have to pay. If it’s possible to wait for three weeks, you can save a considerable amount of money.

Is it illegal to buy essays online?

Many students are worried about legal issues when buying essays online. Since all schools strictly prohibit purchasing papers for money, learners think they’re breaking the law by doing this. But is this really true? In fact, there’s no law against custom writing companies. Their activity is absolutely legal as long as it meets government policies that regulate business functioning. If you turn to an officially registered business, you don’t risk anything.

It’s also important to note that your essay must be plagiarism-free. Of course, submitting a plagiarized paper obtained from an unreliable company can lead to serious consequences. In some countries, you can even get expelled for such actions.

Make sure to read as many customer reviews as possible about the website you’re considering, especially if you’re buying a cheap paper. This is to find out if anyone has faced plagiarism issues with them. Then, you can make your informed choice.

Is it cheating to purchase essays online?

It depends on what you are going to do with the paper that you bought online. If you want to pass it off as your own, then yes, it’s cheating. Representing someone else’s work as your own is an act of academic dishonesty.

Most companies that students use to buy college essays online put disclaimers on their websites that discourage customers from submitting these papers as their own work. According to these disclaimers, any essay paper produced by the website should be used as a model paper for your own essay.

That is to say, if you purchase essay from one of these sites, you have to read it, learn from it, and then write your own essay in your own words.

Where can I buy an essay online?

Today, there are a lot of ways to buy an essay online. Some students go to special forums where they can find peers or experts who complete homework assignments for money. However, it does not always work because you can’t check the qualifications and knowledge of a particular person. Moreover, there are no guarantees that your work will be completed in the right way and on time. Hence, this strategy is quite risky.

The most popular way to buy essay online is by turning to a custom writing company. So-called essay writing services, like PaperHelp.org, provide professional help for students. They usually have a big staff of specialists with extensive experience in academic writing, so you can find an expert that completely meets your requirements and expectations. In addition, credible companies offer a money-back guarantee and unlimited revisions upon your request.

Advantages of Purchasing an Essay From a Reputable Company

It’s important to buy essays only from credible companies with a good reputation among students. First of all, they have a refund policy, which means that you can get your money back if the requirements you’ve set weren’t met by writers. Secondly, reputable companies allow customers to request a revision. If you find errors or think that your paper is generally weak, you can ask a writer to revise it for free.

No matter what questions about your assignment arise, you can always get answers to them via a phone call or chat. And most importantly, top-rated writing agencies always stick to your deadlines. Even if you need your essay to be written in three hours, academic experts will do it for you because there is nothing impossible for them.

Managing all homework independently can be daunting, given the typically packed schedules of students. The substantial workload at school compels many young individuals to seek assistance from essay writing services. Finding the best place to buy essays online is challenging, as the current market is replete with reputable academic writing companies fighting for your attention.

Each of these services has its advantages and disadvantages, which must be carefully considered before making a decision. Hopefully, this article helped you understand the strong points of the most popular writing platforms.
