Sandiaga Uno: From loser to winner

biography sandiaga uno in english

Indonesia just recently held the world’s largest democratic election. While official results are still weeks away, the “quick count” places incumbent president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at a comfortable position against his rival, former army general Prabowo Subianto.

If Jokowi does end up becoming the victor, it will be his second term serving as the country’s president. Indonesia’s 2008 Presidential Election Law dictates that any presidential candidate must have never previously served as president for two terms, meaning that even if Jokowi does win, it will be the last time he will be president.

By now, anyone even remotely following Indonesia’s politics would be aware of the fact that Jokowi had chosen a 75-year-old conservative cleric - Ma’ruf Amin - as his running mate. This was largely seen as a means to appease the conservatives who had largely supported Prabowo back when he and Jokowi challenged each other for the first time in 2014.

Whether Ma’ruf served that purpose or not will likely be up for debate in the coming months. But another (and in some ways even more) interesting character in Indonesian politics is Prabowo’s own running mate, Sandiaga Uno.

Out of the four candidates, Sandiaga, who was born on 28 June 1969, is the youngest at 50 years old this year. Some suspect that while Jokowi had chosen Ma’ruf to appease the conservatives, Prabowo – who is widely seen as a more conservative and sterner politician than Jokowi – chose Sandiaga to appease the more progressive moderates who had given Jokowi their vote in the previous election.

Therefore, not only is Sandiaga a relatively young politician, he is also moderate and progressive. But much more than this, Sandiaga is wealthy. Some reports  say that he had spent close to US$100 million of his private equity fortune to help Prabowo defeat Jokowi. In spite of the fact that he was listed as the 47th richest man in Indonesia by Forbes in 2013, US$100 million is still a hefty amount and, being the businessman he is, it is likely he will not want to see that money going to waste if Prabowo is defeated.

It was Sandiaga himself who revealed that he had used somewhere around US$100 million on Prabowo’s campaign.

"I’ve lost maybe a third of my net worth," he told the media.

asd

This fact is important because many observers believe that Sandiaga had used this election to get his feet wet before taking a more serious shot at the presidency in the next presidential election, slated for 2024.

"Sandiaga Uno clearly has ambitions to run for the highest office and he has used his vice-presidential campaign to build an impressive national profile that will support any later run for the presidency," Ben Bland, director of the Southeast Asia project with the Lowy Institute in Australia, told the media.

"After a successful business career, he has that other all-important political commodity in Indonesia: the money to fund a campaign, as he is doing for Prabowo."

While Sandiaga had claimed that all of his focus was on the recent 17 April election, it would not be too hard to see Sandiaga running for the presidency in 2024 as he has all the factors working for him: he’s young, he’s progressive, and he has the money. He is also popular among the ladies as according to a report last month, during a weekend campaign rally, one supporter asked him if she could be his "second wife".

In a country where the youth make up the largest portion of the people with many reaching the voting age in 2024, there is little reason to doubt Sandiaga’s ability to capture the hearts of this potential vote-bank. What’s more, he will no longer have to contend with potential two-time winner Jokowi.

Unless someone pops up before 2024 who has as many things going for him as Sandiaga does – which now also includes experience – there is a very real likelihood that while Sandiaga may have possibly joined the losing team this time around, he will also be Indonesia’s next president – if he really wants it.

Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy

Growing up in Riau and Jakarta, Sandi, the nickname of Sandiaga Uno, spent his higher-education years at George Washington University and Wichita University. After working in the US for a while, Sandi went back to Indonesia and co-founded several investment companies, like Recapital Advisors and Saratoga Investama. His political career started when he became active in the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) and eventually became its chief from 2005 to 2008. Rising higher, he was elected vice-governor of Jakarta in 2017. Before finishing his tenure, he joined Prabowo Soebianto for the 2019 presidential race, with Sandi as the vice-president candidate. After losing the election, Sandi formed the cross-sector volunteer group Indonesian Volunteers United to focus on pandemic countermeasures. In late 2020, he officially replaced the incumbent Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Whisnutama. As Indonesia bounces back from the aftereffects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sandi is revitalising the tourism sector, with programmes such as Desa Wisata destinations around Indonesia, and empowering the SMEs sector.

Sandiaga uno: indonesia's inspirational entrepreneur.

biography sandiaga uno in english

  • Sandiaga Uno is one of Indonesia's wealthiest businessmen
  • His company Saratoga Capital employs over 20,000 people
  • Uno believes Indonesia has huge potential for growth
  • Poverty gap and corruption threaten the country's development, Uno says

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- Sandiaga Uno is without doubt one of Indonesia's richest men.

With an estimated personal wealth of $400 million dollars and assets valued in the billions, the 41-year-old's climb to the top is an inspiration to many budding entrepreneurs.

Yet this father of two, from humble beginnings is not interested in promoting his own story but rather that of his country and its enormous potential.

Dressed in a green batik shirt, a patriotic gesture to the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia, the businessman knows how lucky he is. From his high-rise office building in downtown Jakarta, Uno speaks of the sacrifices his parents made to send him to university in the United States. It was there he discovered an interest in business that led him to a job in Canada.

But his dream of working overseas came to an abrupt end when the company he was working for collapsed, putting Uno out of a job. He was forced to return home, but the timing couldn't have been worse with Asia in economic meltdown from the 1997 financial crisis.

Struggling to provide for his family, Uno decided against the odds to set up his own business and with four staff in a tiny office, Saratoga Capital was born.

Twelve years later it is one of Indonesia's largest investment firms employing more than 20,000 people.

Uno believes failure is just as important as success and while he admits there were plenty of hard knocks he was confident his gamble would pay off in the long term.

"I knew when Asia came out of the crisis energy would be in high demand. So we started getting serious looking at those opportunities," he said.

And now it is energy that is his primary focus; investing in coal, oil, gas, toll roads, plantations and shipping ports.

Indonesia is going through an enormous economic boom thanks partly to its valuable natural resources. Indonesia's stock market is outperforming its neighbors and the region. Growth is expected to reach 6 percent this year and an emerging middle class is fueling domestic demand.

Despite all this success, Uno believes the country's wealth is not being evenly distributed. Around 40 million of the country's 242 million people still live below the poverty line and Uno describes this as a recipe for disaster.

"Basically if we are not careful the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer and the gap will be the next embryo of the next unrest. So we as businessmen need to make sure the wealth is spread more equally," he said.

Uno is extremely passionate about the future of Indonesia and while he will talk up the country as the next place to invest along side China and India, he's acutely aware and critical of its pitfalls.

He says corruption is the number one problem holding his country back, a view shared by many in the international community. He says to have sustainable growth Indonesia must be attractive to foreign investors.

"I think the government is on the right track in stamping out corruption; it's moving in the right direction. But the speed and pace is not satisfactory, I think people want to see more," he said.

Another major problem is infrastructure and for Uno this has become his "personal crusade". He says anyone who visits the nation's capital Jakarta is greeted by a dilapidated international airport followed by gridlocked roads. His companies have $20 billion to invest in infrastructure projects.

"The money is there, we just need the government to sort out the land acquisition problem among other things which will require changes in the law and then we can start building the infrastructure Indonesia so desperately needs," he said.

Earlier this year, Uno was invited by U.S. President Barak Obama to attend an Entrepreneur's Summit in Washington DC. He describes how impressed he was with the U.S. President who spoke to him in Bahasa and believes the leader of the free world knows just how important Indonesia has become.

Uno says his wealth brings power -- he regularly has the ear of his president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono -- but insists it's not about money or the people you brush shoulders with. His motivation to succeed is much greater than that.

"I see all these paradoxical situations. Indonesia has the 18th largest economy but we're ranked 122 in the world for ease of doing business. It doesn't gel and it really ticks me off. We should do better," he said.

"We are so rich in resources but we can't even produce. For example we produce coca but don't have chocolate factories. We produce crude palm oil but we don't have perfume or soap industries. So we're just exporting our raw materials without being able to process it. I think in the next four to five years Indonesia must be able to generate that expertise."

Biography of Sandiaga Uno – Young Wealthy Entrepreneur in Indonesia

Biografi sandiaga uno

Sandiaga Uno, whose full name is Sandiaga Salahudin Uno, was born in Rumbai, Pekanbaru, Riau, on June 28, 1969. He is the son of Razif Halik Uno and Mein R. Uno, with his father originating from Gorontalo.

This can be observed from Sandiaga’s surname “Uno,” as his father initially worked as an employee at Caltex in Riau. After leaving that job, his father moved the family to Jakarta in the 1970s.

Sandiaga began his education at SD PKSD, then attended SMP 12 Wijaya Jakarta Selatan, and continued to a Catholic high school. Sandiaga Uno proved to be a bright individual, as evidenced by his Summa Cum Laude graduation from Wichita State University in Kansas, USA.

After graduating, he worked at William Soeryadjaya’s Bank Summa. Due to his excellent performance, he received a scholarship to pursue further studies at George Washington University, USA, where he graduated with a perfect GPA of 4.00, a proud achievement.

Working in Singapore

In 1993, Sandiaga worked in Singapore, joining Seapower Asia Investment Limited, an investment company, as an Investment Manager. Two years later, in 1995, he moved to Canada and worked at NTI Resources Ltd as the Executive Vice President.

Becoming Unemployed

Despite earning a monthly salary of $8,000, the 1997 financial crisis hit his company, leading to bankruptcy and layoffs, including Sandiaga. He decided to return to Indonesia and embark on a new venture. Despite facing rejection from 25 companies, this experience became a turning point, leading Sandiaga to shift his mindset from an employee to an entrepreneur .

“…I became an entrepreneur by ‘accident.’ As an entrepreneur born from an accident, I didn’t design to be an entrepreneur.” – Sandiaga Uno.

Becoming an Entrepreneur Due to ‘Accident’

Drawing on his experience, Sandiaga founded PT Recapital Advisors in 1997, a financial consulting company, with his high school friend Rosan Perkasa Roeslani. Although faced with skepticism, the company gained a client six months later.

Establishing an Investment Company

In 1998, Sandiaga and Edwin Soeryadjaya founded the investment company PT Saratoga Investama Sedaya. Leveraging a strong network, the company focused on telecommunications, mining, and forestry. They raised capital, acquired financially troubled companies, improved their performance, and sold them at a higher price. One notable acquisition was Bank BTPN.

Currently, Sandiaga Uno serves as the CEO of various large companies, including Saratoga Capital, PT Tower Bersama Infrastruktur Group Tbk, PT Adaro Energy Tbk, and PT Recapital Advisor.

Entering the List of Richest People

Forbes listed Sandiaga Uno among the top 40 richest people in Indonesia in 2013, with a wealth of $400 million, ranking 29th. His investment firm, Saratoga Capital, is known as Indonesia’s largest investment firm with 20,000 employees. In 2015, he resigned as CEO of PT Saratoga Investama Sedaya Tbk.

Currently, Sandiaga Uno serves as the National Economic Committee and treasurer of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association. He is an active speaker at various entrepreneurship seminars, emphasizing courage and optimism as keys to future success.

According to Sandiaga, entrepreneurship is about 30% networking and the rest comes from hard work and maintaining trust in building a business.

Wealth of Sandiaga Uno

As of September 2016, Sandiaga Uno’s total wealth was around IDR 3.8 trillion according to the State Officials’ Wealth Report (LKHPN). In 2017, Globe Asia estimated his wealth at IDR 7.2 trillion. However, by 2018, his wealth had decreased to around IDR 4.3 trillion or approximately $300 million.

Sandiaga Uno is listed among the top 100 richest people in Indonesia according to Globe Asia.

Family of Sandiaga Uno

Sandiaga Uno is married to Nur Asia. They met in junior high school, continued their relationship through college, and eventually got married. They have three children named Sulaiman Saladdin Uno, Anneesha Atheera Uno, and Amyra Atheefa Uno.

Political Career

While known as a successful entrepreneur and one of Indonesia’s richest individuals, Sandiaga Uno entered the political arena.

Vice Governor of Jakarta

His name gained prominence in Jakarta’s public discourse when he entered politics and ran as the vice-gubernatorial candidate of Jakarta, supported by the Gerindra party, alongside Anies Baswedan as the gubernatorial candidate. In the Jakarta gubernatorial election, Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno emerged victorious over their opponents, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Syaiful Hidayat.

2019 Vice Presidential Candidate

In August 2018, Sandiaga Uno was chosen as the vice-presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential election by Prabowo Subianto, who ran for president. This required him to step down from his position as Vice Governor of DKI Jakarta.

Even if Prabowo loses, Sandiaga Uno will win in Indonesia’s election

Not somebody with humble beginnings, the rapid rise of Prabowo Subianto’s running mate also shows his future ambition.

  • Indonesian Elections

As Indonesians go to the polls on Wednesday, questions have arisen around the business interests of the man who could be their next vice president.

The youngest among the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, charismatic political newcomer Sandiaga “Sandi” Uno has undoubtedly injected energy into a campaign that has otherwise been dull by Indonesian standards.

The 49-year-old only joined Prabowo Subianto’s Gerinda Party as an advisor in 2015. But a lack of political experience has been no hindrance, with Sandi becoming vice governor of Jakarta in 2017. This came after a controversial campaign that exploited nasty sectarianism to oust the previously popular ethnically Chinese and Christian governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

Less than a year into his term as vice governor, Sandi was declared Prabowo’s pick for vice presidential candidate in the bid to unseat president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

biography sandiaga uno in english

It is widely believed Sandi edged out other candidates based on his ability to fund the Prabowo camp’s campaign. Forbes named Sandi as Indonesia’s 47th richest man in 2013, with an estimated net worth of US$460 million.

When selected as running mate, Sandi was accused of paying political “ dowries ” of around US$35 million each to the National Mandate Party (PAN) and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Gerindra’s coalition partners, in exchange for their endorsement. It has also been reported that Sandi claimed to have spent almost a whopping US$100 million of his personal wealth to fund the Prabowo-Sandi campaign, which Bloomberg speculated could be a “down payment on his own presidential ambitions”.

Sandi could hardly be described as somebody with humble beginnings. His petroleum engineer father Razif “Henk” Uno came from a noble family in Gorontalo, Sulawesi, while his mother is prominent Jakarta socialite Mien R. Uno .

Sandi was personally mentored by William Soeryadjaya, the owner of Indonesia’s largest conglomerate Astra International and a friend of his mother’s. Known as the “printer of rich people in Indonesia”, by some accounts Soeryadjaya paid for Sandi’s MBA at George Washington University in the early 1990s.

Sandi then worked in Singapore before returning to establish an investment firm known as Saratoga Capital in Indonesia in the late 1990s. “I built my business from zero and Indonesia has been so kind to me. Indonesia has provided me with unimaginable fortune and, for that, I need to pay back to my country,” he told the Straits Times last year.

biography sandiaga uno in english

Back in 2016, Sandi was named in the explosive Panama Papers as a client of Mossack Fonseca, the now-defunct shady Panamanian law firm shown to have created thousands of shell corporations for wealthy businesspeople around the world for the purpose of tax evasion and other illegal activities.

Sandi has denied evading taxes or breaking the law by establishing offshore companies with Mossack Fonseca.

But questions around his business dealings continue to swirl. The London-based NGO Global Witness recently linked Sandi to payments of at least US$43 million from a major Indonesian coal company to an obscure offshore firm and called on Sandi to provide a credible account of his actions. Meanwhile, a new Indonesian documentary entitled Sexy Killers documents the devastating impact of coalmines and coal-fired power plants on the health, homes and livelihoods of local communities across the archipelago. Several companies linked to Sandi feature prominently.

The documentary also makes clear Sandi’s willingness to do business with both sides of politics. In late 2018, Sandi sold assets from his company PT Saratoga Investama Sedaya worth more than Rp130 billion (US$9.2 million) to PT Toba Bara, owned by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Panjaitan, a key figure in the Jokowi administration.

Luhut’s PT Toba Bara is a conglomerate with interests in natural resource extraction, electricity generation and agriculture. Initially serving as Jokowi’s chief of staff, a former four-star military general Luhut has long served as an important mentor for the president.

Sandi has been tipped by many as the Gerindra presidential candidate for 2024, likely to inherit a party which was originally created as Prabowo’s personal political vehicle.

Sandi also has business ties to Jokowi’s re-election campaign manager Erick Thohir, a media mogul and former owner of Italian football giants Inter Milan. The two cofounded the Angel-eQ Network, which was established to provide investment and support for local start-ups. Sandi was quoted by Indonesia’s news agency Antara last year as saying: “Erick and I have been best friends since we were kids”.

For some, such ties serve as another point of frustration with the history of oligarchic domination in Indonesian politics and the potential distorting influence on national priorities. The emergence of the so-called Golput movement is an example of an attempt to counter the grip of wealthy individuals on Indonesian democracy. Some of this is born of frustration – for instance, that despite international debate about the viability of coal in the era of climate change, Indonesia’s government continues to provide millions in subsidies to coal-fired powerplants.

Sandi has been tipped by many as the Gerindra presidential candidate for 2024, likely to inherit a party which was originally created as Prabowo’s personal political vehicle. It seems a fair assumption he will continue to do business with either side of politics.

“Want clean government? Want the price of electricity down? Choose Prabowo-Sandi,” declared Sandi in his concluding remarks of the final presidential debate on Saturday night.

Whether or not Indonesians do so, he looks to be this election’s big winner.
