Projects on Coursera offer a hands-on experience where you can use industry tools to solve real-world challenges and create work samples that help you showcase your skills and stand out to potential employers.

Projects can be especially valuable if you’re planning on switching careers or breaking into a new field. Completing Projects and adding them to your Coursera profile can help you stand out to employers and take the next step in your career.

This article will provide guidelines on how to effectively showcase your completed Projects to create an appealing portfolio.

How to showcase your Projects to employers

Clear and concise descriptions, focus on relevant details, edit and proofread your work.

Projects allow you to demonstrate your hands-on experience in a particular field, which helps you stand out to potential employers. To effectively present your Projects, follow these guidelines:

  • Write clear and concise descriptions

Employers may have limited time to review your portfolio, and lengthy or unclear descriptions may cause them to miss important details. Writing clear and concise descriptions helps to demonstrate your ability to effectively communicate complex information.

When you’re writing the summary, solution, and approach for your Project, you should focus on these key details:

  • Context : Describe the problem you were solving, and your goals for the Project.
  • Strategy : Explain your approach to the Project and how you overcame challenges.
  • Results : Highlight your key findings and the positive outcomes of your work.
  • Skills : Identify the relevant skills you’re demonstrating.

When you’re describing your Project, be sure to consider what is most relevant to the field or position you’re targeting. Overloading your descriptions with irrelevant information may distract employers from the qualifications they’re seeking in a candidate.

When you’re deciding on what to include in your descriptions, be sure to ask yourself:

  • How is this information relevant to this field or role?
  • What would an employer care about?
  • How can I distinguish myself from other candidates?

You can review the job description for a position you’re interested in to identify which specific skills employers are looking for.

Carefully proofread and edit your descriptions to make sure you’re demonstrating good communication skills. Typos and grammatical errors can create a negative impression for employers. You should also avoid slang or informal speech (such as ‘lol’), which may come across as unprofessional.

You may find it helpful to read your writing out loud, or have someone else review it to ensure that it is clear and easy to understand.
