The Homework Machine

The Homework Machine

Starting with a stern statement from the Grand Canyon, Arizona Police Chief Rebecca Fish, meet four fifth graders in big trouble. There's long-haired, rebellious, cool guy Sam Dawkins; fun-loving, unacademic, pink-haired Kelsey Donnelly, African American grind Judy Douglas, and friendless genius Brenton Damagatchi. The whole thing starts because Sam is anti-homework, especially the daily fill in-the-blank worksheets his first-year teacher Miss Rasmussen hands out. Sam is skeptical when Brenton claims he has programmed his computer to search the web and do all his homework each day, but it’s true. Soon the four seatmates are spending every afternoon in Brenton’s bedroom, printing out their daily assignments on the computer they nickname Belch. It can’t do any harm, right? The chronology and confession of their ill-fated escapade is related entirely through a series of transcripts, narrated by the four contrite kids, their parents, classmates, and Miss Rasmussen.

There are many interesting threads explored in this nimble story: keeping secrets, making friends, being popular, the morality of taking the easy way out, first crushes, the meaning of war, and even the loss of a parent. The setting of the Grand Canyon and sub-themes about playing chess, starting fads, and using a catapult will get kids looking up supporting information in books and on the Internet. Questions readers can think about as they read include: Which of the four main characters is most like or unlike you and why? Which one would or would not be your friend and why?

"Seen a lot of strange stuff go down in 10 years working here, probably has something to do with being so close to the canyon. Having a mile deep hole in your backyard brings out the weirdness in folks. I remember that time the gambler from LA lost a bet in Las Vegas, and his friends drove him up here; forced him to parachute into the canyon, guy almost died. You get all kinds in this part of the country, the canyon attracts 'em like flies to dog doo... But this recent situation involving the children, was one of the stranger cases I ever ran into..." — Police Chief Rebecca Fish

In an interview room sits a police officer, and a girl named Kelsey; the latter of which is considered guilty of a crime. The child is demanded to give a testimony and is being recorded by cameras and microphones, all eyes and ears on them. The girl parts her lips, and begins to talk.

STOP. EJECT. INSERT NEXT TAPE. PLAY.

Brenton Damagatchi, Judy Douglas, Sam "Snik" Dawkins, and Kelsey Donnelly are all 5th grade students that only share one thing in common: their last names all start with a "D". Apart from that, they're nothing alike, Brenton is the typical smart kid who gets perfect grades, Judy always looks up to the teacher, Sam is a class clown who doesn't play by the rules, and Kelsey doesn't care enough about her grades to do any real work. Despite this (and largely because their teacher assigns seats in alphabetical order), they're all forced to sit together in class, with only their last names keeping them together...

At least that's what you may be led to believe.

All these kids (who cheekily named themselves "the 'D' squad" due to their last names) do share something else: a secret that if revealed, could have massive repercussions within the school district and within the county itself.

A 2007 novel by Dan Gutman, The Homework Machine is about the social repercussions of the eponymous device, and a commentary on the inner workings of the American Education System. The book's narrative is told in a series of testimonies provided by the 4 lead child characters, as well as their parents, the teachers, and the staff of the school they all attended. The testimonies are provided in the order they were taken, but said testimonies do not tell the story in the order that the events took place.

Was followed by a sequel in 2009, Return of the Homework Machine .

The Homework Machine contains examples of:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot : Downplayed. Giving the homework machine the ability to access the sum of human knowledge leads to it not turning off when unplugged but that's all it really does. The D-squad freaks out and chucks it into the canyon .
  • All First-Person Narrators Write Like Novelists : Zigzagged. They do spend a fair amount of time discussing not-exactly-homework-machine-related things, but for the most part, the cast of narrators talk like people, not like novelists.
  • Armor-Piercing Question : When Ronnie suspects the D Squad has a secret, he tries to get it out of Brenton by pretending to be friendly, and when that doesn't work, he threatens to reveal what Brenton is up to. Brenton says, "And what exactly am I up to?" Ronnie doesn't have an answer, because he doesn't know.
  • Asian and Nerdy : Brenton is Japanese-American and a genius kid who's programmed a machine to do his homework for him, and he's only in fifth grade.
  • Black and Nerdy : Judy is a gifted, hardworking and rule-abiding student who gets called a goody-goody and a know-it-all by the other kids.
  • Bonding over Missing Parents : Kelsey starts crying when she finds out about Snik's dad, because she lost her own father in a snowmobile accident when she was six.
  • Chekhov's Gun : The catapult, which they used to fling the machine into the canyon.
  • Child Prodigy : Brenton has always been a super-genius, even from a young age. Brenton's mom : He spoke very early. He had no interest in watching television or playing with other children. Instead, he would play chess against himself. He taught himself how to play the piano as soon as he was big enough to climb up on the bench. When he was just six, he wrote a concerto. Really! And that's what he called it, too. "My concerto." I don't know where he got the word concerto. I still don't know what it means. He was very special.
  • Deadpan Snarker : Snik has a sharp tongue. This is what he wrote for an assignment where the class had to make 10 rules about homework. 1. We live in a democracy, where we have freedom, right? We're entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So how can I pursue happiness if I have to spend every night doing home-work? Homework is cruel, totalitarian punishment created by grown-ups to take away the freedoms of poor, defenseless children. 2. Nobody ever saved a life, won a war, stopped a crime, or cured a disease while they were doing homework. Think of all the good things we could be accomplishing if we didn't have to spend so much time doing homework. 3. Doing homework causes eyestrain, fatigue, insomnia, and other physical ailments. 4. Thomas Edison went to school for four months. He never did any homework, and look how he turned out. 5. There's a name for working without getting paid. It's called slavery, and it was banned during the Civil War. If kids are forced to do homework, they should be paid for it. 6. Homework is proof of teacher incompetence. If a teacher is any good, students would learn the stuff in school and wouldn't have to learn it again at home. 7. Doing homework wastes valuable natural resources. We have to use lots of energy to keep all those lightbulbs burning. We have to cut down trees to make paper and pencils. We'd save a lot of energy by banning homework. 8. I keep hearing that American kids are way too fat, and that's because we don't get enough exercise. For every minute kids are doing homework, we are getting fatter. Kids should be outside running around and getting exercise, not inside doing worksheets. 9. Virtually every known murderer, bank robber, and criminal did homework when they were children. How can we be sure the homework didn't cause the criminal behavior? 10. Homework sucks. There should be a constitutional amendment banning it.
  • Deconstruction : Brenton is a Child Prodigy , but he's not one to the absurd levels many books and television shows depict them. He was only able to build the Homework Machine in the first place because he got ahold of an advanced supercomputer by a fluke, and despite his nerdiness he's not capable of doing things that are outside the realms of plausibility. At the end of the day, he is still a kid.
  • Do Well, But Not Perfect : After a while, Miss Rasmussen starts getting suspicious of the homework the D Squad is turning in because their answers are always perfect with no mistakes. In turn, Brenton starts programming the homework machine to make minor mistakes at random when doing Snik's and Kelsey's homework because they're more Book Dumb than either him or Judy.
  • Early Personality Signs : According to Brenton's mom, he was always different from other kids. He never cried as a baby, and never wanted to play with other children or watch TV. He played chess with himself and taught himself how to play the piano.
  • Everyone Has Standards : Even though he hates the D Squad, Ronnie swears up and down that he wasn't the one who called the cops on them. He's not lying. It was Brenton.
  • Exact Words : When Miss Rasmussen is starting to get suspicious of the D Squad's perfect homework, she takes Snik aside and asks him if he ever copies off anybody. He says he doesn't, which is technically true because he gets the machine to do his homework for him.
  • Only Sane Man: Judy
  • The Smart Guy: Brenton
  • The Pervert: Snik
  • The Butt Monkey: Kelsey
  • The Cynic: Snik, who hates homework with a violent passion and refused to do it for a time at his old school
  • The Optimist: Judy, who really doesn't mind homework and thinks it has educational value
  • The Realist: Kelsey, who does homework even though it sucks
  • The Apathetic: Brenton, who doesn't really mind homework but admits it's time consuming and thus invents the homework machine
  • Choleric: Brenton (the genius)
  • Melancholic: Judy (the perfectionist)
  • Sanguine: Snik (the class clown)
  • Phlegmatic: Kelsey (the slacker)
  • Framing Device : The story is told through testimonials given by the D Squad, their teacher, their parents, and occasionally other people. It's framed as the police putting the story together the following summer.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble : The D-Squad consists of Brenton and Snik (male) and Judy and Kelsey (female).
  • I'll Be Your Best Friend : Sam offers to be Brenton's friend to let him use the Homework Machine, believing that friends are the one thing he'd want that he doesn't have. Ultimately, they end up becoming friends for real.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation : Brenton is a Child Prodigy with a ridiculously advanced mind who can't relate to other kids and seemingly has no interest in making friends. He only ends up befriending the rest of the D Squad in the first place because they came over to his house for a homework assignment.
  • It Won't Turn Off : The machine runs unplugged, and only turns off when thrown over the Grand Canyon.
  • Military Brat : Snik, who's new at the beginning of the story because his father is assigned to Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix.
  • Nobody Likes a Tattletale : When the D Squad first hears about the homework machine that Brenton built, Judy thinks about raising her hand and telling the teacher, but decides not to because everyone already calls her a goody two-shoes and she doesn't want them calling her a tattletale too.
  • Noodle Incident : We never find out why Snik got suspended at his previous school, though it's implied it had something to do with him not wanting to do his homework.
  • Open-Minded Parent : Kelsey's mom lets her elementary-school-age daughter dye her hair pink and pierce her belly button.
  • Revealing Cover Up : The homework machine is only discovered when the D-squad builds a catapult to chuck it into the Grand Canyon and its parts are later found by some hikers, therefore getting them caught for littering.
  • Sdrawkcab Name : Snik's real name is Sam, but his nickname is "Snikwad" or "Snik" because that's his last name, Dawkins, spelled backwards.
  • Switching P.O.V. : The story is narrated by 4 characters: Brenton Damagatchi, Kelsey Donnelly, Sam "Snick" Dawkins, and Judy Douglas.

Woodworking Machine Covers

Table of Contents

Introduction

Woodworking machines are integral pieces of equipment in any woodworking shop. From the table saw to the jointer, each one is responsible for precision cuts that make sure every piece of wood fits together perfectly. Unfortunately, these machines are also prone to dust and other particles that can cause damage to the machinery down the line. To protect your investment, it’s best to invest in a woodworking machine cover.

Woodworking machine covers are made from tough materials like canvas or nylon and come with zippered or drawstring openings so you can easily remove them when needed. They typically come pre-made for standard machines but can likely be custom fitted for machines that have a non-standard size. Many covers are even water resistant, helping prevent rust and corrosion from hindering the performance of your machinery over time.

Perhaps most importantly, covers can help keep your shop clean by shielding your machines from pesky sawdust and other debris as well as from splashing liquids and droplets from wet processes like staining or finishing. This also reduces cleanup time afterward since you won’t have to wipe down your tools before spraying them down with lubricant or checking for any possible defects. With regular use, a cover can even minimize static electricity buildup which could potentially decrease static shocks when working on projects around sensitive electronic components nearby.

Exploring the Different Materials Used in Woodworking Machine Covers

Woodworking machine covers are an important part of any wood shop. They protect expensive tools and equipment from dirt, dust, and other environmental hazards that could ruin delicate parts. Without protection, the value of machines can decrease due to rusting, corrosion, and other damage caused by the elements.

When it comes to choosing a cover for your wooden machinery, there are several different materials you can use. Common materials include plastic sheets, cloth covers, metal mesh covers, rubberized covers and waterproof windows. Each type of cover has its own benefits depending on the machine and how long you intend to keep it covered for. Plastic sheets provide a low-cost way of covering most machines in a short amount of time. Cloth covers are great for protecting against dirt particles but won’t always last as long as other materials. Metal mesh covers provide good air circulation while helping to keep out dirt and dust particles. Rubberized covers offer good protection from moisture as well as resisting staining from chemicals and oils used in woodworking projects. Lastly, waterproof windows allow natural light into the workspace while limiting dirt or debris from entering the area.

No matter which material you choose for your woodworking machine cover, it is important to make sure that it fits properly and securely over all areas of the machine so that it can provide the best protection possible

Important Factors to Consider Before Buying a Machine Cover

1. Quality: When shopping for a machine cover, it is important to look for a high-quality product. Look for one that is made from strong material such as nylon or polyester with reinforced stitching along all seams. Also, make sure the cover is waterproof, so it can protect your valuable tools and machines from moisture and dust.

2. Size: Make sure to measure the size of your machines carefully before purchasing a cover. If the cover is too tight or small, it will be more difficult to remove and put on whenever you’re using your machine. On the other hand, if it’s too loose or large, the fabric may bunch up when placed over your machine and reduce the efficiency of protection it offers.

3. Easy on/off: It should be easy to get a cover on and off your machines without having to fumble around with zippers and buttons that could potentially get jammed up or broken. Also look for products with built-in grommets that allow for secure fastening around your machines for optimum security against outdoor elements.

4. Portability: Consider how much portability you need from a machine cover before making a purchase decision. Some covers are designed specifically for indoor storage so they can easily be folded or rolled up when not in use while others are designed to withstand all weather conditions and require additional construction materials (such as securing straps) to keep them secure during windy periods outdoors.

5. Price: Since there are countless types of machine covers available on the market today, do not let price be the sole factor when selecting one as this could compromise its quality and longevity down the line. Compare products among various retailers before making any purchasing decision so you can find an item that strikes the balance between being cost effective while still being extremely durable at the same time

Exploring the Pros and Cons of Each Material

Woodworking machine covers are an essential tool to protect your expensive and delicate power equipment against dust, spills, and other debris. It is important to choose the right type of cover material for your needs. Depending upon your safety requirements and budget, different materials can provide advantages in different areas.

Some of the most commonly used materials for machine covers include cloth, canvas, leather, plastic sheeting, clear vinyl and rubberized fabric. Cloth and canvas are both lightweight but also provide a tight fit because they are more flexible than leather. Cloth covers are also often less expensive than leather ones. If you want something more durable than cloth or canvas covers, then leather is an option because it offers better protection from scrapes or other damages caused by wood pieces. Plastic sheeting provides a barrier between the machine and any loose particles that may get inside the cover due to air movement around it; however, it can be less flexible which may make it difficult to put on and remove. Clear vinyl is great if you need a clear window that allows viewing what going on underneath your covers while providing some protection against dust particles; however they do not offer much protection against scratches or wear over time without adding additional reinforcement layers underneath them. Rubberized fabrics can provide strength while still being breathable; though they tend to be heavier in weight which makes them tough to move around from location to location.

When researching woodworking machine covers, it’s important to consider all of these pros and cons before making a decision about which type of cover will work best for you so that you get the most cost-effective solution for your shop needs.

Common Uses for Woodworking Machine Covers

Woodworking machine covers provide a layer of protection over equipment and tools. In woodworking, the highest priority is protecting the integrity of the piece being created. Covers can help ensure that delicate pieces, such as fine-grained woods, are not damaged by dust and debris from other tools.

Covers can also help to prevent accidental burns on machines. Some models even come with fire retardant features. These types of covers are especially useful for professional workshops with multiple machines in use at once. This helps guarantee that machines remain pristine and free from damage or fire-related accidents.

Woodworking machine covers can be used to protect larger power saws, belt sander and planer machines; they are most commonly used when storing such powerful machinery away during idle periods to help reduce rusting or wear due to environmental exposure or lack of use. Additionally, the covers can help decrease levels of noise caused by certain machinery, allowing for quieter and more pleasant working hours. Woodworking machine covers are usually made from a durable canvas material with adjustable straps for easy installation and removal depending on need or task required associated with each particular project involving these machines.

How to Care for and Clean Machine Covers to Extend Its Lifespan

When caring for and cleaning machine covers in order to extend its lifespan it is important to recognize that different materials require different care instructions. Different materials can include cotton, felt, vinyl, or leather. Cotton is a breathable material and therefore may require more frequent cleaning than the other types of materials. It is best to read the manufacturer’s instructions before using any products to clean the cover.

It is also important to regularly vacuum machine covers in order to remove dust and other small particles that can accumulate over time if left unattended. Vacuuming is especially important on felt covers as it can help prevent small particles from becoming lodged within the fibers of the material and ultimately damaging it. Regular inspections of the cover should be conducted while vacuuming, as this will allow you to quickly identify any tears or deterioration that may need attention right away.

Do not attempt to use a washing machine with any type of machine cover as it can cause damage and potentially ruin the item completely. If necessary, lightly spot clean only with mild detergent and warm water on a soft cloth. If necessary for tougher stains, weaken the detergent with enough water so all suds are gone, then apply carefully next vigorously scrubbing all areas affected until stain is removed. Be sure not to use too much force when scrubbing as this can damage sensitive materials such as lace or leather. Finally, allow full drying before reapplying by laying flat or hanging from a covered line outdoors if possible and out of direct sunlight try to keep fabric away from rain or snow if at all possible for ultimate protection against wear and tear due to weather conditions over time.

Selecting the Right Cover for Your Woodworking Machine

When selecting a machine cover for your woodworking machine, it is important to consider the size of the machines, what type of protection you need and how often the covers will be used. Machine covers come in various sizes and types to accommodate all sorts of machines, from large industrial saws to small precision cutters. The type and thickness of material used also varies depending on the application. If you are looking for heavy-duty protection, there are thick canvas covers that offer superior durability and weatherproofing. They can even have plastic liners to protect against water damage or abrasion. For lighter protection or occasional use, thinner fabric covers may be adequate. You may also want to consider fire-resistant fabric if your workshop is exposed to sparks or heat sources. Another factor to consider is ease of installation; many models feature adjustable straps for custom fitment, so ensure that the cover has these features before making a purchase. Finally, make sure that any cover you buy is approved for use with your specific machine model; this way you can be assured of proper coverage and protection when it comes time to use it.

Woodworking machine covers are an essential investment for any woodworker, whether they’re a professional or hobbyist. When you invest in a quality machine cover, you are protecting your valuable machines from dust, dirt and other debris that have the potential to cause damage. In addition to keeping your machines clean and running smoothly, machine covers also provide additional shelter from the elements such as sun, wind and rain which can damage the finish and parts of your machine over time. Furthermore, quality machine covers will often feature things like ventilation panels and waterproof materials for extra protection against moisture. Investing in a high-quality cover could extend the life and functionality of your valuable woodworking machines for years to come, potentially saving you money on repairs and replacements down the line.

How One University Rector Forever Changed Russian Education

Kuzminov allowed maximal academic freedom, but it was this that tore apart his power and he was forced into compromises and obedience..

homework machine cover

The extent to which all significant projects in Russia — from theaters to newspapers and universities — are tied to specific personalities has become clear following the retirement of Yaroslav Kuzminov, founder and rector of the Higher School of Economics (HSE).

Responses to this retirement and speculation about its consequences, which bear a striking resemblance to a funeral oration for forward-thinking Russian education, reveal the true scope of the model ‘new’ Russian university, HSE, and one of its founding fathers.

The departure of HSE’s rector is difficult to compare to that of any particular minister, including those with related profiles — education, science, public outreach.

Kuzminov’s retirement is an important event, and his influence during certain periods of post-Soviet development was significantly greater than that of various agency heads. Although there was a time when Kuzminov was considered a candidate for Minister of Science or Education, such an appointment would have been pointless: his influence as rector and author of various reforms was much greater.

Kuzminov has been succeeded by Nikita Anisimov, the former director of Far Eastern Federal University, who made his career in the administration of MGU.

His marked neutrality to Kuzminov’s legacy — in the sense that we know nothing about Anisimov’s views — can be read as either negative or relatively positive, so far as the latter is even possible.

The Idea of a University

The Unified State Exam (EГЭ or USE), conceived both as a means of fighting corruption and a way to identify talented students from the provinces, was Kuzminov’s brainchild. Even before the USE’s introduction, HSE had operated on comparable principles. It was the first institute of higher education with an anti-plagiarism scheme.

The Bologna Process, which brought Russian education into sync with European systems and opened a window to the world for Russian youth — that was also Kuzminov. Plans for strategic reform aimed at authoritarian modernization (none, however, ultimately realized), were created with the involvement of his team. He also consulted for the government with the hope of implementing some small schemes. But none of that was as important as what he achieved in changing the content of education. Russian education was completely transformed, thanks largely to HSE.

Kuzminov began with “teaching the teachers”.

Taking a leaf from Peter the Great, the future professors of HSE — distinguished, middle-aged Soviet economists with years of experience — were sent abroad to further their education in Paris and the Hague. In Moscow, they listened to lectures on economic theory by Revold Entov. Grigory Kantorovich (not to be confused with the Nobel laureate of the same last name) taught them mathematics and econometrics. The young Kuzminov introduced these new pedagogical methods to the economics faculty at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology; subsequently, many physicists requalified as economists.

Money was raised; sources ranged from the European Commission’s development assistance program for the post-Soviet sphere, TACIS, to George Soros (who stood behind almost every meaningful initiative in culture or education and, speaking bluntly, saved Russian science). Connections were cultivated, too.

The first classrooms at HSE were located in the machine hall of the former Gosplan Main Computing Center; the first offices of the rector and vice-rectors were located at the Gaidar Institute. Gaidar, as Prime Minister, signed documents creating a ‘factory’ of free-market economists. As one of the first HSE professors put it, “We owe our existence to the European Union and the government.”

From compromises to suppression

All large enterprises (or, in the case of the media, all enterprises with large audiences) sooner or later began to fall under strict government control. The masses were not to be indoctrinated with unnecessarily diverse knowledge or exposed to a broad range of perspectives.

The idea of the free university and free media, at this stage of development of Russian authoritarianism, demanded serious correction.

Universities like HSE were to some degree protected by the authority of their rectors, but, as the Marxist maxim goes, “to live in a society and be free from that society is impossible.” In today’s circumstances, instead of ‘society’ we ought to say ‘government’. HSE and its rector fell into a trap. Kuzminov had built the university with a new culture and maximal academic and student freedoms, yet was himself obliged to curtail those freedoms in order to save HSE from the barrage of criticism from above.

It began with a compromise in the form of embedding himself in power — personal membership in the All-Russia People’s Front (ONF) and candidacy for the Moscow City Duma with the ruling party’s support. And it ended with the direct suppression of student freedoms (for example, the shuttering of the student journal DOXA and other discussion forums), dissolution of uncooperative laboratories, dismissal of teachers, many of whom now form the backbone of the Free University, bringing with them the academic culture of the early HSE or even “proto-HSE” of the early nineties.

When graduate student Grigory Yudin was arrested during the first wave of protests in 2011, HSE defended him. When undergraduate Egor Zhukov was targeted by political repression, HSE did almost nothing. Vice-rector Valeria Kasamara’s candidacy for Moscow City Duma in 2019 was stigmatized by the university administration (most unfairly, not least to Valeria) as unenlightened and retrogressive.

“Kuzminov’s trap” is strangely reminiscent of the phenomenon known in the 1980s as “Gorbachev’s Dilemma”: Mikhail Sergeevich permitted glasnost, which tore apart his power.

Kuzminov allowed maximal academic freedom, and it was this that tore apart his power as high-ranking members of the administration demanded more and more compromises and obedience. This was not merely calls from the Kremlin with demands to do away with this or that teacher. It was systematic attempts to destroy the house that Yasin and Kuzminov built.

HSE’s motto was the Latin “Non scholae, sed vitae discimus” — “We study not for school, but for life.” There are already a great many graduates of HSE in Russia, including at the highest levels of government. But to change the life of the country — the task these graduates prepared for — their numbers and intellectual mass are insufficient. Success would require not one HSE, but many.

However, the task now at hand is much smaller — to save even just the one HSE, to keep her as she was in the days of her founding fathers. The HSE that gave us a model for high-quality, globally competitive education for the entire country.
