So different people adopt different aims according to their inclinations, tastes or perceptions about life. My teachers are really helpful and are always guiding and helping me with my future plans.

They have always inspired me to do better and work harder. I was once explaining some doubts to my classmates and I realized that I really like explaining and teaching. Later, I experienced teaching while doing an internship with an NGO. I went to a slum and taught kids there. I felt a different kind of satisfaction after teaching them. At that time I realized that I had never felt happier than this and decided to become a professor. I am one who enjoys exploring new places and getting to know new cultures, languages, and cuisines, and working as a professor offers many chances for me to develop those interests. After my English Honours degree, I will prepare for the Master’s degree. But fixing the mistake and taking the right decision at that moment will show you light in the right direction. Therefore, do not give up hope and keep trying. And, be ambitious.

How to Achieve That?

The first and foremost task is you have to be very careful while making the decision. An aim leads towards the right career. So, here are a few steps that you must remember in every phase of your life.

Always be Proactive

Every person decides at some point what he wants to become. And, in this era of modernization, I am aiming to become a doctor. Not just because my mom is a doctor but also it is a noble profession.

Many people aspire to become an engineer, architects, dancers, interior designers etc. Amid all the other professions, there are some particular reasons behind my preference for becoming a doctor.

A doctor is a person who saves others’ lives by treating them well. He helps people in curing all the diseases by giving them the required medicine or through surgery or various other procedures. Not only curing people by treatment but also a doctor must offer hope and joy to the patient and his family in times of difficulty.

No One would be able to survive in this world if there was no doctor. Nothing could be greater than saving someone’s life and spreading joy in the world.

However, it is not easy to become a doctor. I have to overcome a lot of hurdles to gain success. First I have to study hard and then I have to clear the medical entrance examination to secure a seat in a medical college first and then complete the programme to reach my goal.

I want to be a doctor because I want to help those who cannot afford the cost of treatment of many difficult diseases. I have a goal of opening a hospital of my own that will be equipped with all the modern medical instruments. And those who require treatment but can’t afford the cost of it will be able to get treated in my hospital. I idolize Dr Devi Shetty, the well known cardiac surgeon. Hence I have decided to embark on this journey.

It is a long journey. But I am quite ambitious and I will put in a lot of hard work to fulfill my goal.

Characteristics of a Good Essay

It must be concise: Essays must always be concise. It does not mean that the essay is supposed to be the short one, but it must be of the length required to convey the idea, no more no less. In this instance, the idea of Aim in the life of the student.

It must be clear: Essays are supposed to be clear; it means the main argument or the central idea of the essay must be clear and not vague, and the same goes for each of the sentences of the essay.

For example, in the topic, My Aim in Life, if the student is writing, My aim in life is to become a doctor, then the next sentence must be something that adds meaning to it, such as because I like to help the people, and not something irrelevant, such as, I like singing.

It is very important to be successful in your life. Hence, fixing a goal and staying focused is crucial in your life. So, making a proper plan from a young age and timely execution along with the right attitude are the ultimate keys to success.

I think I am a quite fit person for this profession.

My progress at school all along is very satisfactory. I have a great liking for the science subjects. My teachers also encourage me. My country is still heading for progress. It needs the services from the rank and file of the country. I think I have some service to do for my motherland.

There is another reason, too. I am the only child of my parents. My parents would be happy if I become a doctor. They want me to be a good doctor and serve the poor free of cost. They inspire me a lot. I have firm faith in my ability to honor their hope. After obtaining my medical degree, I will go back to the village to treat the poor village men free of any fees.

The medical profession is certainly rewarding. But I have in fact no greed for any reward. A doctor’s life is a dedicated life. A smile of a life is my reward and is my impetus. I find great satisfaction in the service of the sick and suffering people. This is really a noble job. I will spare no pains to achieve this noble ideal. Thus I am mentally prepared. My highest ambition is to serve my nation by serving poor humanity. I say My highest ambition is to be a good doctor.

My Aim In Life Essay 150 Words

As a child, I always wanted to be a doctor. It has been my dream since I was a child. A person must know where they want to go in life, and what he hopes to become when he grows up. Once one knows what someone aspires to be, he can work hard to achieve it.

My parents are very happy with my decision and wish me all the success and hope that I will achieve my ambition. I am always concerned when my friends and family members are sick, and I feel like caring for them. My intention is to establish a clinic in my village once I receive my medical degree. There are no good doctors in the village. Due to the lack of medical facilities, a large number of people die there, and I would like to provide them with medical assistance.

It is not my intention to become a doctor just to make money. I will ensure that the poor should not be deprived of treatment because of a lack of money. I will treat my patients gently and considerately. With dedication, determination, and devotion, I am sure that I will succeed in fulfilling my ambition. I shall encourage people to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.

My Aim In Life Essay

My Aim In Life Essay 250 Words

Throughout my life, I have a dream of serving my motherland in a uniform. As a pilot, I wish to join the Indian Air Force or Navy, protecting my country from its enemies. The sound of an aircraft moving across the air makes my heart race. The sheer power of the aircraft can also be felt through the rumble over the ground. Flying in a fighter plane is my ultimate goal. The Balakot airstrike inspired me to become a naval pilot through Operational Trident during the war with Pakistan. A real hero is someone you earn, not the one you see in the movies or TV shows. To be a real hero, you have to earn a uniform that gives you real powers and not imaginary ones. In the end, I want to see myself in the uniform as soon as possible.

What made me choose to join the military as my life’s goal?

A sense of systematicity, organization, and discipline inspired me to join the forces. Rather than the mundane civilian life, it is the action involved in the military that draws me there. Having radio contacts in the services is beyond cool to me. The way they communicate is fascinating in its own way. It is always appealing to me to see the colors of the uniform, whether it be green, white, or blue. The authorization to kill an enemy is the cherry on top. Armed personnel are provided with advanced gear and machinery. Guns and weapons are included in this machinery.

My opinion is that life in the forces is far more satisfying and adventurous than civilian life. I also enjoy adventure sports like skydiving, river rafting, scuba diving, mountaineering, etc. In every step of the services, I have the opportunity to engage in action. I don’t want to take advantage of these privileges for the privileges that armed personnel enjoy, but I cannot ignore these benefits. For me, the vehicles are an important aspect. My first step would be to get one for myself.

My Aim In Life Essay 500 Words

It is important to have an aim in life, because an aimless person is like a rudderless ship in the sea that has no idea where they are headed. As well, if we do not know where we should be in life, we will not know where to go. I have always wanted to be a professor, but my family is inspiring me to do the same. I have overcome many obstacles and setbacks from time to time. My parents are really supportive and respect my decision.

A lot of my friends wish to become professors, and some wish to become MBAs. There are so many aims and goals students can choose from in their life. Doctors, educators, programmers, designers, architects, marketers, supervisors, managers, engineers, and other top trending professions are the ones in the world right now. Maybe you have something unique in you and you are interested in pursuing it. Consequently, different people adopt different goals according to their inclination or taste or perception of life. I am grateful to my teachers for their guidance and assistance.

Once, I explained some doubts to my classmates and realized I enjoyed explaining and teaching. They have always inspired me to work harder and do better. Later, I had the opportunity to teach while doing an internship with an NGO. I taught kids in a slum. My experience gave me a different kind of satisfaction. As a result, I decided to become a professor because I had never felt happier than that.

Working as a professor gives me many opportunities to develop my interests in discovering new places and learning about new cultures, languages, and cuisines. Therefore, I am the one who enjoys exploring new places and getting to know new cultures, languages, and cuisines. Aside from my English Honours degree, I intend to pursue a Master’s degree. Following that, I intend to take the UGC NET exam. Academia has a number of advantages, including flexible working hours that are generally different from other professions.

Being a professor has the biggest advantage of finding jobs across the globe. The road to my goal is surely long, but I will try my best to accomplish it, and I recommend that everyone do the same. My greatest advantage is that I am honest and passionate about what I want out of life. By visualizing the change and achieving milestones along the way, I believe I can stay motivated to succeed. Executing an action plan in a timely manner with a proactive attitude is key to success.

Conclusion:

It is my personal goal that I would like to achieve in life. I am honest and passionate over the goal I have set for myself and I urge everyone to strive as hard as they can to achieve it.

My Aim in Life Essay in English

An aimless person is like a living dead body. Every single person in this world must have their aim in life. Having an aim is the purpose of life. The aim is a desire of any person to become in the future when they become an adult or capable of achieving it. Aim helps us to achieve our existence, our purpose of life that we have decided. Setting an appropriate aim is also a very important part of life. Whatever we think and want to be in our future, we have to be aware of the consequences, benefits, and ways to achieve it. It is like a goal that we set in our life to become in the future. To achieve the goals, we have decided to achieve them in life and become successful, for making this happen real, we must have to go through numerous challenges, and a lot of obstacles can come in our path to break the confidence level and forces us to quit the targeted aim, dream in between and go back or change the aim like quitters.

An aimless person is like a random path without any particular destination. The purpose in life of a person gives him a reason to live with joy and happiness and make an example for others to live life in the best way like a goal achiever. We all have set our different aims in life to become after a few years, some of us choose our goals by our own creation of minds, some choose their goal influenced by the family member or person whom we like and want to become like them.

I also set a perfect goal that I have decided to achieve in the future. My aim in life is to become a teacher and inspire students and other people to become good people. Before making this my aim, I asked myself many questions, like why I wanted to become a teacher instead of a doctor, engineer, actor, athlete, wrestler, boxer, scientist, pilot, astronaut, etc. Then I realized all persons become something in their lives only because of a correct mentor, guide, or teacher. A teacher educates people about everything in life, whether for educational purposes or other things. Nobody grows longer in life without a teacher, whether a teacher is from school, parents, or any random person from which we get inspiration. A teacher has the potential to change the desired needs of the world and the ability to improve them.

My aim in life essay – for students

There is no doubt that every student has set his goal, which is to succeed with excellence in study, and to join the university he prefers to study at. Therefore, students choose at the secondary level the section that qualifies them for university study, and this is setting goals.

Some students prefer to study literary subjects, and their goal is to enroll in theoretical faculties, such as studying law, languages, history, and others. While others prefer to study scientific subjects in order to join practical colleges such as medicine, pharmacy and science. Some students prefer to study mathematics in order to enroll in the College of Engineering or the Institutes of Technology and others.

Thus, the student can direct his efforts to achieving the goal, and in My aim in life essay – for students , I will write a paragraph about the definition of the goal and the importance of defining our goals.

Aim definition

The aim is the end that you want to reach in the end. For example, if a person wants to be a doctor in the future, he must strive to achieve this goal by studying scientific subjects and excelling in his studies, achieving success in exams, joining medical school, and studying seriously. Thus, he can eventually achieve his goal and become a successful doctor in his work.

I like the saying: “ The ultimate goal of life is action, not knowledge. Science without action is nothing. We learn in order to act .” Thomas Huxley

It is noticeable that this person was able to define his goal and study the scientific materials that qualify him to join the Faculty of Medicine. Thus, it saves time and effort.

But when we do not define our goals, there is confusion and great effort in sub-things that are far from the goal. We may reach our aim in the end after tiring and passing a long time, or we may not reach our aim, and this is considered a major failure.

The importance of aim setting

Determining the goal is one of the most important success factors, because it helps us determine the right path that we must take. I like this saying: “ The straight path only leads to the goal .” Andre Geed. Therefore, I set my aim precisely, and in fact I have several goals that I want to achieve in the future.

These goals are related to the job that I want to work in in the future, my place of residence, my marriage and the formation of a family, my economic status, owning a house and a car.

There is no doubt that the goals are many and I cannot achieve them at the same time, so I care about priorities. For example, now my most important goal is to achieve great success in my studies, and therefore I am working to achieve this goal by studying seriously, seeking the help of my teachers, attending school regularly, relying on myself to obtain knowledge and learn more information through the Internet.

All of this will help me achieve my goal at this stage, which is to excel in my studies. In My aim in life essay – for students , I will explain that every stage of my life has a specific goal. But this goal leads to another bigger goal, until I reach my greatest aim in life.

The information we search for ourselves cannot be forgotten by the passage of time. Learning is a continuous process that does not stop at a certain stage, because science develops with the increase in scientific research and the advancement of technological means that are used in scientific research.

Therefore, we must follow what science has reached in terms of new inventions and recent discoveries in the field in which we want to work in the future.

After completing my high school studies, I will study at the Faculty of Medicine, in order to achieve my career goal, which is to be a doctor. In My aim in life essay – for students , I will explain my economic goal in the future. I like the saying : “ Glory lies in a person’s attempt to reach a goal, not in reaching it. ” Mahatma Gandhi.

“ The goal that we pursue without appreciating the obstacles, without fearing the dangers, is a goal that can never be reached .” Alvaro Motis.

Life is a set of experiences, and every path we take is a mixture of sadness and joy, optimism and despair, ease and difficulty. The road to success is difficult and full of obstacles, so I am able to endure and face obstacles, through strong will and determination to achieve my goals.

“ Clarity of purpose  causes reassurance and leads to happiness” . Goethe, a playwright and poet. I promised myself to walk forward on the path of success, and I will not back down, no matter what difficulties I face, I will overcome them, and turn failure into success. I never like despair, I believe that great goals are not impossible, but they require determination, will and good planning.

At the end of My aim in life essay – for students , I presented the definition of the goal, and that it is the end that we want to reach in the end. The importance of setting a goal to reduce effort and time. Setting a goal makes us focus on achieving it without branching out in ways that do not lead us to achieving the goal.

There is a main goal in my life, but in order to achieve this goal there must be interim goals, which ultimately lead to achieving the main goal in my life.

“ Failure is not achieving our goals, but failure is that we do not try to reach the goal. ” Che Guevara. I believe that the path to success is difficult, and therefore I must give up despair completely, and plan well to achieve my goal with minimal effort, and I must seek the help of experienced people, and find a solution to any problem I encounter, continuing to work seriously that leads to achieving the goal.

At the end of My aim in life essay – for students , I hope you have benefited, and I appreciate your comments.

My goal in life is to become a person of value to society, a person whose abilities can be relied upon, and to become one of the effective personalities that help its society in building and progressing, and to have great energy and ability to develop, so that I can progress and excel continuously.

Undoubtedly, there are many people who do not have a goal or a destination that they seek to reach, and these I liken them to a ship that has no destination, which does not reach anywhere.

Unlike people with will and goals, they can achieve many things in their lives, and these achievements are very suitable for them. I will explain this in my aim in life essay.

For a long time, I had many ideas, such as what is the purpose of life, and other similar thoughts, but I was able to identify the problem that I do not have a specific goal until I have ambition to achieve it, so I should have known well what my goal is, and what is an effective personality of value in the society I want to be like.

Until I was able to reach that the doctor is one of the influential personalities, especially if he works in an important and sensitive specialty that helps others to live their lives normally, without suffering or pain.

In order for me to reach this goal, I must stick to my dream no matter what obstacles I face, and I must prepare myself well to excel in study until I reach this goal.

I know very well that this goal is different from other goals that do not require effort and dedication since childhood, and that I will face many obstacles in improving and developing myself in study.

The wonderful thing about this job is that it brings you a good reputation and great fame whenever you apply for it, and you have many people who trust you and know your experience, which makes them leave you the judgment in diagnosis and treatment with confidence. It was explained in my aim in life essay.

There is the social aspect, that the character of the doctor is loved by everyone, children or adults, as he represents one of the respected personalities in society who imposes himself on everyone, and obtains everyone’s love, which gives the person a good aura, and great approval for his role in society.

It also contains many skills that the doctor learns from his graduation until his last working day in this profession, so it is very interesting for me, because it does not have a specific or known ceiling in learning, treatment and creativity.

Therefore, it represents a great challenge for me, and this is one of the qualities that I love in myself, the challenge and not being afraid of the unknown, in addition to my love for development and progress, especially the improvement of the tools, inventions, or treatment methods available to me, It was explained in my aim in life essay.

It is also one of the jobs that a person can gain many ideas through his work environment, get to know many different nationalities, meet people with a high level of intellectual progress, and can gain many useful points from them.

It is also a wonderful environment to work, where there are many superior people, who are always striving to progress and reach the best possible result, which creates a competitive atmosphere always, and there is always an incentive to research, progress, learn and use the latest and best methods.

Although it is a wonderful job and has a lot of achievements to be proud of, but it includes a lot of risks and a lot of failure that a person will face, It was explained in my aim in life essay.

I realize how difficult it is, but I see a wonderful side to it, which is facing reality and accepting it. The doctor gives his best, and he seeks to treat the patient or provide the best possible result, and until he can do this, he will face some failures and obstacles that he will learn from and make him strong so that he can continue and work without getting bored.

My Aim in Life Essay 1 (200 Words)

Everyone has an aim in life, which he or she wants to achieve at any cost. Sometimes they are so desperate to achieve the goal that they work/study 24/7 putting efforts much beyond their actual capacities.

Speaking of my aim in life – since childhood I have nurtured a desire to become a civil servant or a government officer to be more specific. When someone expresses a desire to become an officer, it is not money that he/she has in mind. Had it been money, I would have opted for other lucrative and rewarding career options.

I want to become an officer, because I had been always fascinated by the way an officer conducts himself/herself in public. There is something orderly yet humble; commanding yet considerate in the behavior of an officer. You will never ever see a responsible government officer behaving or talking like common everyday way farers. He/She is always composed, calm and someone you can rely on for help and advice.

It is these personality traits of an officer that fascinates me the most and I also wanted to be recognized and respected as an officer. I know that it is easier to dream than to transform the same into reality. Nevertheless, I am trying hard and up to best of my capacity to achieve it.

Just in case, if you also tried hard but failed to become an officer for some reason, I have a very generous piece of advice for you. “Never let the Officer in You Die”! Even if you don’t hold a gazetted post, no one on planet can snatch your right of “Behaving like an officer”. Even if you can’t become one, you can always behave like one and do justice to your dream and passion.

Twelve Sheep by John Connell: the magic of life over 12 beautiful chapters

Twelve Sheep: Life Lessons from a Lambing Season

After John Connell wrote his last book, The Stream of Everything – a reflective memoir published two years ago, sprung from Covid lockdown – the farmer/writer/film-makers from Co Longford fell into a melancholy. In Twelve Sheep: Life Lessons from a Lambing Season, Connell describes this slump as a “soul weariness”.

Sleep did not bring him rest. While he differentiates the sad, tired chasm that he found himself in from the sustained depression he discussed so honestly in his previous books, he writes at the start of Twelve Sheep that in a way the sadness was harder; for it created an alienated loneliness and, most distressing for a writer, dried up his previously overflowing well of creativity.

In Twelve Sheep Connell brings us on the journey that leads him back to vitality and purpose, with the characteristic depth of a writer making his mark in the genre of spiritual nature writing. Connell carries forward the lamp of the late great Irish poet-philosopher, John O’Donoghue, and keeps alive the flame of the bardic tradition in Irish literature.

Salvation comes to Connell through the 12 sheep he buys from the family farm, which he described in his best-selling The Cow Book. In 2018, aged 29, after 10 years adventuring across several continents, he returned to put down roots in the Longford ground he grew up on. While Connell had helped tend to his parents’ commercial sheep flock since his return to the home farm, the 12 ewes he buys from his family present a different prospect. The lives of their lambs rest in his hands alone.

“There’ll be 12 stories to be told before the season is done,” observes Connell’s father. What follows is an unfolding of those stories across 12 brief, beautifully written chapters, each one alchemising a universal life lesson.

Within this solid structure, Connell artfully weaves a tapestry that traversestime and space. He combines threads of personal essay, accidental philosophy and observation of nature and the seasons, with thoughts on literature and art, uplifting comments from Connell’s favourite authors, his own contemporary social and cultural analyses and, of course, his care of the 12 ewes and the birthing and rearing of their lambs.

Through it all, Connell finds meaning.

As with much great spiritual literature, there is a resonance in Twelve Sheep between content and form. The sound, rhythm and pacing of the language has a deeply relaxing and meditative effect, experientially creating within the reader that present moment awareness – the appreciation of what is, right now – which the subject matter of the text is simultaneously invoking. It’s a joy to read a writer who swims against our materialist dogma to confidently express the magic of life.

[  The Cow Book: A farmer’s son uneasy return to Longford  ]

Connell’s veneration of nature takes practical shape in the chapter We Must Love our Home, about him and his father planting trees on the farm, converted in recent years to organic. The tree-planting is Connell’s attempt to offset the hundreds of thousands of air miles he clocked up during his 10 years as a traveller.

Connell clearly has an ecological perspective. However, I do sense an elephant – or large sheep – in the room. While the author describes in detail the catastrophic environmental destruction wrought by sheep in Australia and Patagonia, I feel he only glances at the ruination of grasslands and woodlands – and the devastating loss of uplands topsoil – that sheep (once 8.9 million, now 3.5 million) continue to cause in our own country.

[  John Connell: ‘I did an accidental trilogy on Longford’  ]

“Is farming part of the problem?” Connell asks. He provides no satisfactory answer. The underlying unease that this conflict creates is mitigated by Connell’s astute observations on the problem of excessive antibiotic use in animal herds, and our urgent need to enable rural families and communities to find sustainable livelihoods on the land of Ireland. It is hope-inducing to read his reports of the return of young people to the Irish countryside, and of the thriving new businesses that migrants to Ireland are bringing to towns.

The final chapter and lesson in Twelve Sheep – Love is All You Need – is the book’s epiphany. Here Connell quotes German-Swiss author Herman Hesse: “The more we are capable of love and dedication, the more our lives will be rich with meaning.” Connell writes to transmute his own and his readers’ suffering. In his paean to the power of love, he achieves that for himself, and for this reader.

Is there life out there? Scientists and philosophers aim to find out

CU Boulder is one of five ‘spokes’ of the Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe, charged with exploring the nature and extent of life in the universe

For most of human history on Earth, we have looked up and out, gazing into the fathomless cosmos and asking one of our biggest questions: Is there life out there?

It’s a question that scientists, philosophers, theologians and artists have pondered for millennia, and one that guides the work of the Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe (LCLU) at the University of Cambridge and its “spokes”—five affiliated institutions of which the University of Colorado Boulder, led by Carol Cleland , a CU Boulder professor of philosophy , is one.

The LCLU and its five spokes—which also are University College London, ETH Zurich, Harvard University and the Center of Theological Inquiry at Princeton University—collaborate on cross-disciplinary research studying the origin, nature and distribution of life in the universe.

Carol Cleland

Carol Cleland, a CU Boulder professor of philosophy, leads the CU Boulder "spoke" of the Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe.

LCLU founder Didier Queloz , an astronomer and 2019 Nobel Prize winner for physics, knew of Cleland’s philosophical work on why life can’t be defined, which challenged the definition-based search strategies favored by NASA, and her alternative proposal for searching for potentially biological anomalies (vs. life per se).

He invited her to help make an application to the Leverhulme Trust (UK) to fund a new center for the study of life in the universe housed at Cambridge University.  When the application succeeded, Cleland and CU Boulder and four other researchers and their affiliated universities became “spokes” of a new Center for Life in the Universe at Cambridge University.

“I was invited by Didier because of my work on logical and philosophical problems with defining life and the role of anomalies in facilitating scientific discovery,” Cleland explains. “I wrote a book in 2019 where I argued that rather than coming up with the definition of life, which is impossible, one should be looking for potentially biological anomalies using tentative [vs. defining] criteria. My book explains the thorny logical and philosophical challenges involved in defining life.  [With regard to searching for extraterrestrial life] these problems include the infamous N=1 problem, namely, that known Earth life represents a single example of life, and that current biological theorizing about the nature of life tends to be based on what is now known to be an unrepresentative example of familiar Earth life. Logically speaking, cannot safely generalize to all life from a single unrepresentative example of life.”

Cleland guesses that “Didier is interested in my work on the role of anomalies in scientific discovery and its application to scientific investigations into the nature, origin, and extent of life in the universe.”

Defining life

In 1995, Queloz and his research colleagues discovered the gas giant planet  51 Pegasi b , the first exoplanet discovered orbiting a Sun-like star. Though scientists had long theorized the existence of exoplanets, the discovery not only earned Queloz the 2019 Nobel Prize for physics, but also helped charge the scientific and philosophical search for life in the universe.

The LCLU was established with a $12.5 million grant from the Leverhulme Trust and charged with exploring the nature and extent of life in the universe. That includes not only working to understand whether the universe is full of life, Cleland says, but how life emerged on Earth and its potential for emergence elsewhere in the universe.

“Characteristics that scientists currently take as fundamental to life reflect our experience with a single example of life, familiar Earth life,” Cleland noted when LCLU was founded. “These characteristics may represent little more than chemical and physical contingencies unique to the conditions under which life arose on Earth. If this is the case, our concepts for theorizing about life will be misleading.”

“Philosophers of science are especially well trained to help scientists 'think outside the box' by identifying and exploring the conceptual foundations of contemporary scientific theorizing about life, with an emphasis on developing strategies for searching for truly novel forms of life on other worlds,” she adds.

Cleland, who began her career, with a degree in mathematics, as a computer scientist interested in artificial intelligence, transitioned into philosophy by considering one of the biggest questions of human existence: What is consciousness?

In pondering life and consciousness, she eventually concluded that we currently lack a scientifically fruitful, conceptual framework for understanding the nature of consciousness and switched to the difficult but, she believed, scientifically more tractable question “what is life?”

In her 2002 paper “Defining ‘Life,’ ” co-authored with astronomer Christopher Chyba, Carl Sagan’s last student, she developed an analogy for thinking about whether life can be defined:

“Before the invention of molecular theory, people may (or may not) have believed that ‘water’ could be precisely defined, but the best they could do in ‘defining’ it would be to discuss its sensible properties. In the absence of a compelling molecular theory, attempts at definition were doomed to interminable bickering over which of its sensible properties were essential to water’s nature.

“We suggest that current attempts to define ‘life’ face exactly the same quandary. It is possible that in the future, we will elaborate a theory of biology that allows us to attain a deep understanding of the nature of life and formulate a precise theoretical identity for life comparable to the statement ‘water is H20.’ In the absence of that theory, however, we are in a position analogous to that faced by someone hoping to understand water before the advent of molecular theory by ‘defining’ it in terms of the observable features used to recognize it.”

Generalizing to all life in the universe from a single example

In her book, Cleland emphasizes that understanding—rather than defining—life must necessarily focus on discovering forms of life descended from alternative origins of life and that the best way to do this is to hunt for potentially biological anomalies.

View of southern North America from space

“Why go looking for life like our form of life? Our form of life emerged on a particular planet, Earth, under a set of distinctive physical and chemical conditions that may not generalize to other life bearing planet," Carol Cleland, CU Boulder professor of philosophy, says.

“Why go looking for life like our form of life? Our form of life emerged on a particular planet, Earth, under a set of distinctive physical and chemical conditions that may not generalize to other life bearing planet," Cleland says.

She argues that recent laboratory work “that claims that we are on the verge of creating life in a test tube has limited application for telling us much about either how life originated on Earth or the intrinsic nature of life.”

As an analogy, she gives the example of quartz, which can form in hydrothermal pools by precipitation or in cooling magma by crystallization or be made in yet another way via industrial processes.

“Just as there are a variety of different ways of producing quartz there may be a variety of different ways for producing life, under natural and artificial conditions,” she says, adding that it is important to distinguish questions about the origin of life from questions about the nature of life.

“Long before the discovery of the molecular composition of quartz (SiO 2 ), which depended upon the development of the periodic table in the 19th century, people knew that quartz is produced in hydrothermal vents. Analogously, discovering a way of making life artificially in a lab may not tell us very much about the general nature of life, especially if our theorizing is based on a defective conceptual framework for understanding life.”

Based on these considerations, Cleland recommends searching for potentially biological anomalies. “We just don’t know how different life could be from familiar Earth life or the variety of different chemical and physical conditions under which life might emerge. The best way to search for life as-we-don’t-know-it is thus to look for phenomena that ‘shouldn’t be there’, that is, phenomena resembling familiar Earth life while also differing from it in ways that we wouldn’t expect a nonliving system to exhibit. Such phenomena are anomalous in a special sense, namely, a potentially biological sense, and hence are worthy of further investigation for the possibility of an unfamiliar form of life, as opposed to being dismissed as nonliving because they fail to conform to a favored, earthcentric, definition of life.”

These ideas, Cleland says, dovetail with the four themes that LCLU scientists and philosophers pursue: identifying the chemical pathways to the origins of life; characterizing the environments on Earth and other planets that could act as the cradle of prebiotic chemistry and life; discovering and characterizing habitable exoplanets and signatures of geological and biological evolution; and refining our understanding of life through philosophical and mathematical concepts.

Cleland says she hopes to expand CU Boulder’s role as a LCLU spoke by establishing partnerships across campus, which could lead to enhanced collaboration with researchers around the world.

“We are one planet that we know is actually occupied by life,” she says. “We don’t know if we’re unique in our solar system, and since almost all stars have planets around them, there are likely to be other forms of life. And unless life is a scientific miracle—and scientific miracles almost always turn out to be anomalies thar are later explained by novel approaches—then there is other life in the universe.”

Amy Ettinger, who inspired readers with her life-affirming essays on dying, succumbs to cancer at 49

essay aim of life

( JTA ) — Amy Ettinger,  an author and creative writing instructor who chronicled the last months of her life in articles for the Washington Post , died March 20 from cancer at her home in Santa Cruz, California. She was 49.

Ettinger’s essays focused on the things she was able to do and cherish despite her diagnosis with a rare, incurable cancer called leiomyosarcoma : seeing a live performance of “Mamma Mia!” with her 14-year-old daughter, Julianna; eating her favorite pastry from a San Francisco bakery.

“ I’ve learned that life is all about a series of moments, and I plan to spend as much remaining time as I can savoring each one, surrounded by the beauty of nature and my family and friends,”she wrote.

Ettinger was an occasional contributor to Kveller, the Jewish family website that is a Jewish Telegraphic Agency partner. There she wrote about her mother’s kugel recipe (“light brown on its crispy top, and the color of milky coffee in the middle”) , and how she, as a “non-observant Jew,” marked Yom Kippur — which in 2013 happened to fall on her 10th wedding anniversary .

“Like Yom Kippur, a wedding anniversary is a time to take a step back from your daily life — to weigh the good and bad, to contemplate your triumphs and missteps, to make a vow to do better individually and as a couple,” she wrote.

Ettinger was born in Rochester, New York, and grew up in Cupertino, California. She discovered her calling as a journalist in high school. She majored in American literature at UC Santa Cruz and earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1999.

Her writing appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, New York Magazine, Salon, CNN and Newsweek. In a 2021 article for AARP, she wrote how her mother’s death inspired her to learn Sheila Ettinger’s favorite game: mahjong. She taught writing classes at Stanford Continuing Studies.

In 2017,  Penguin Random House published her memoir-cum-travelogue “Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America.” In it she wrote how she keeps “between fifteen and thirty dollars’ worth of ice cream in my freezer at all times” — not to eat, but as an “emergency backup system” in case one of her favorite shops or stores runs out.

Her follow-up story to her Washington Post article, titled  “I Have Little Time Left. I Hope My Goodbye Inspires You,” appeared on the newspaper’s homepage less than two weeks before she died.

“I am choosing to focus my limited time and energy on doing the things I love with the people I care most about. It’s a formula that works, I think, no matter where you are in your life,” she wrote.

In an article written after she died , her husband, the writer Dan White, wrote that she had dictated her last essay to him from a reading room at UC Santa Cruz with a view of a redwood forest. He said she had gotten hundreds of personal responses: A handful “unwelcome, including missives from ultrareligious people wanting my proudly Jewish wife to get saved to spare herself from hellfire,” but the vast majority saying Ettinger had inspired them to make the most of their lives no matter the cards they’d been dealt.

“Amy had no way of predicting that the lines she composed on the spot would be calls to action for readers from all over the United States, as well as Canada, Poland, France and Greece,” White wrote.

Choosing an aim in life can be a personal decision based on one’s interests, strengths, and dreams. It could be a career goal, such as becoming a doctor or a teacher, or it could be a personal goal, like helping others or making a difference in the world. It’s important to remember that our aim can change as we grow and learn more about ourselves and the world around us.

Working Towards the Aim

Once we have an aim, we need to work towards it. This involves setting smaller goals, making plans, and taking action. It may require hard work, patience, and perseverance, but the satisfaction of achieving our aim makes it all worthwhile.

500 Words Essay on Aim Of Life

Life is like a journey where every person needs a clear path or direction. This direction is what we call the aim of life. It is what gives life a purpose and helps us to guide our energy in a certain direction. Without an aim, a person’s life might feel like a ship without a rudder, directionless and not reaching anywhere.

Importance of Having an Aim

Having an aim in life is very important. It gives us a sense of direction and a target to reach. With an aim, we know what we are working towards and can take steps to reach that goal. It helps us stay focused and motivated. Even when things get tough, knowing our aim can help us keep going.

Choosing an aim in life is not always easy. It’s not something that you can pick up from a list. It should be something that you truly want to achieve, something that you are passionate about. It could be becoming a doctor, an engineer, a teacher, or even a musician. The important thing is that it should be something that makes you happy and gives you a sense of fulfillment.

Working Towards Your Aim

Once you have chosen your aim, the next step is to work towards it. This involves making a plan and then sticking to it. For example, if your aim is to become a doctor, you need to study hard, get good grades, and then get into a good medical school. It’s not going to be easy, and there will be obstacles along the way. But with hard work, dedication, and perseverance, you can achieve your aim.

Changing Your Aim

It’s okay to change your aim if you realize that it’s not what you really want. Sometimes, we choose an aim because it’s what others expect from us, or because it seems like the ‘right’ thing to do. But as we grow and learn more about ourselves, we might realize that our true aim is something else. And that’s okay. It’s never too late to change your aim and start working towards a new goal.

In conclusion, having an aim in life is crucial. It gives our life a direction and a sense of purpose. It helps us stay focused and motivated, and guides us towards achieving our goals. Remember, it’s okay to change your aim if you realize it’s not what you truly want. The important thing is to have an aim that you are passionate about and that gives you a sense of fulfillment. So, take some time to think about what your aim in life is, and then start working towards it. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Today's total solar eclipse: When it will be visible in Arizona and when the next one is

essay aim of life

Everyone is preparing for the total solar eclipse that will be visible across parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada on April 8, 20024. During this phenomenon, the moon will entirely cover the sun, causing darkness. The eclipse's timing varies depending on location.

Arizona is not in the path of totality , but viewers here will be able to see a partial eclipse starting at 10:08 a.m. and peaking at 11:20 a.m.

If you plan to step outside and look at the eclipse, here's  where to get certified eclipse glasses  and the  best places to watch the eclipse in Arizona . If you're wondering what to wear, this is why you should wear red or green .

Here are the top things to know about the 2024 total solar eclipse.

What kind of eclipse is on April 8?

On Monday, April 8, parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada will witness a total solar eclipse, which means the moon will completely cover the sun, making it go dark.

Here's what to know about the three types of solar eclipses .

What time is the solar eclipse on Monday?

That depends on where you are. In Arizona, viewers will be able to see the eclipse beginning at 10:08 a.m. and watch the peak at 11:20 a.m. The eclipse ends at 12:35 p.m.

Here's more about what time the eclipse will happen.

Where to find solar eclipse glasses

Public libraries throughout metro Phoenix have been handing out free eclipse glasses while supplies last. Check with your nearest library to see if it has any left. Warby Parker stores around town had a supply as well.

Eclipse glasses will be provided to people who attend the Arizona Science Center's free eclipse viewing party from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.

You can get free glasses while they last at Sonic Drive-In and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in metro Phoenix.

How dark does it get in a total solar eclipse?

During a total solar eclipse, the sky can darken significantly, resembling twilight or even dusk, depending on factors such as atmospheric conditions, the duration of totality and the observer's location. In the path of totality, where the moon completely obscures the sun, the sky can become quite dark, revealing stars and planets that are normally hidden by the sun's glare.

What is the path of totality?

The 2024 total solar eclipse will traverse a path northeast across parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

In Mexico, the path of totality includes Sinaloa, Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nayarit.

In the United States, states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Maine will experience totality.

In Canada, the eclipse path includes Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton.

For the full list check out where will the solar eclipse be visible and how to watch in Arizona.

When is the next solar eclipse?

The United States won’t see another total solar eclipse until 20 years from now. But if you are willing to travel, you can see a total solar eclipse in 2026. Find out where the next solar eclipse can be seen and what year the United States will see the next one.

When was the last solar eclipse?

The last total solar eclipse the United States experienced was in 2017. It was dubbed "The Great American Eclipse" because the last time the United States experienced a path of totality before that was in 1918.

If A.I. Takes All Our Jobs, Will It Also Take Our Purpose?

An illustration depicting a blue brain with an orange electric plug sticking out of the brain stem.

By Peter Coy

Opinion Writer

What would life be like if artificial intelligence solved all your problems? You wouldn’t have to work anymore. You could get any luxury you wanted by raising an eyebrow. Feelings of pleasure would wash over you constantly. Death would become almost optional because you could take on digital form and keep going for a billion years.

It sounds awful to me.

We human beings dislike our problems, naturally, but if we had no problems to solve, what meaning would life have? How long would we be happy sitting on top of our big rock candy mountains? For me, one long weekend would about do it. A billion years of perfect happiness would be perfect misery.

Nick Bostrom, a philosophy professor at Oxford, wrestles with this question in a fascinating book that was published on March 27, “Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World.” Solved here means solved the way the game of tic-tac-toe has been solved: If you move first, there is no reason you should ever lose.

A lot has changed in A.I. in the 10 years since Bostrom’s last book on the topic, “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies.” A.I. is folding proteins, generating art and blowing minds. The idea that it will change the world has gone from a nerdy obsession to conventional wisdom.

What we still don’t know is how A.I. will change the world. It could enslave or kill us all. But for “Deep Utopia,” Bostrom smartly chose to imagine the opposite: That A.I. does exactly what we ask it to do.

It’s not a pretty picture. “Basically,” he writes, “we’re unfit to inhabit a perfect world.”

People could still “work” at “jobs” in “offices” even if A.I. becomes able to do everything better than people can — a scenario examined by the economist Pascual Restrepo of Boston University in one of my newsletters last month. But the jobs will really be more like harmless hobbies, Bostrom writes.

Fine, you might say, people can fulfill themselves in other ways, such as shopping or gardening or child care. Bostrom punctures that balloon as well. One reason people find satisfaction in such activities is that they pride themselves on being good at them — knowing how to find the right throw pillow or grow gardenias or dry a child’s tears.

But A.I. will be able to do all of those things better than you can, Bostrom says. “It is quite conceivable that, at technological maturity, you would in fact be slightly harming your child whenever you indulged in some D.I.Y. parenting,” he writes.

I predict that prediction will infuriate a lot of people. I’m appalled by it myself. Bostrom, though, is not aiming to please. He clearly prides himself on following trends in A.I. to their logical conclusions, even when that’s discomfiting. He’s a jokey, quirky polymath who has a doctorate in philosophy but has also studied computational neuroscience, mathematical logic, astrophysics and general relativity.

Although he says we’re not cut out for perfection, Bostrom does explore ways that life in utopia could be made bearable after all. For instance, we could ask the computers to give us absorbing challenges. He cites a science fiction novel, “Permutation City” by Greg Egan, about a man who has achieved immortality. To avoid boredom, he programs himself to be seized, at random intervals, by fresh passions. At the moment of the novel it’s making table legs, of which he has manufactured 162,329.

That feels more like hell than heaven. Another vision of the future, even more repulsing, is that we become aimless blobs, perhaps hooked up to electrodes for jolts of pleasure.

Bostrom asks us to suspend judgment, though. Maybe we’d like it. “The question before us here is a very different one: not how interesting a future is to look at , but how good it is to live in .”

Bostrom told me on Friday that he sees the book as an exploration of the A.I. future, not a conclusion about it. “It’s going to be ultimately a very deep question what we choose,” he said. There is, he said, “a hunger for people to think about these questions.”

He likened the book to a particle accelerator that smashes atoms together to study their parts, such as quarks. In “Deep Utopia,” he said, he smashed values into one another to study their composition.

Toward the end of the book, a professor named Bostrom who very much resembles the author promises to reveal the secret of life. Just as he gets to that point in the lecture, the dean tells him to wrap up because the venue has been booked only until 6.

“Well,” the Bostrom character says, “I guess that’s that.”

The Readers Write

On China’s domination of green technology exports : I’m of the opinion that the planet does not care who is making what. What matters to the planet is total emissions and use of resources. If someone can make them most efficiently on the South Pole, that’s what’s better for our planet.

Mato Egredzija Zagreb, Croatia

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s trip to China comes across as typical U.S. arrogance of telling people what they should be doing. How would she feel if the Chinese finance minister visited Washington, D.C., and told her that Americans should be saving more money for retirement and children’s education?

Patrick Yuen Riverside, Conn.

Quote of the Day

“There ain’t any answer, there ain’t going to be any answer, there never has been any answer, that’s the answer.”
