PhD programmes
When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, you’re actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. 👀.
“Do a master’s here – I’d say it’s a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my master’s at Malmö University and now I’m doing a PhD at Lund University” – Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne
So that means – no tuition fees, no scholarships. But you’ll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And that’s why available PhD positions are listed on a university’s job board.
How to apply for a PhD position? You’ll apply directly to the university.
Just so you know, there’s no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that you’ll need to have a master’s degree – in the same field of study – and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But that’ll depend on the subject.

Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry
Become a researcher.
Stockholm University is a leading research university that conducts basic independent research and applied research in the human and natural sciences. Our research produces internationally recognized scientific breakthroughs.
Doctoral studies take four years and result in a PhD, the highest academic degree in Sweden. There is also a two-year research study program which ends in a degree of licentiate.
PhD Programme
The doctoral programme at MMK corresponds to 4 full-time years of study. There are two parts: course work totaling 60 ECTS and a research project ending in a PhD theses. The thesis is almost always a summary of research presented in a number of scientific journal articles written from your doctoral work.
How doctoral programmes are different in Sweden
Doctoral students are admitted to specific research projects and groups. The link below shows PhD positions that are currently available and allows you to subscribe to the listings so you can see when positions are announced (2-4 times/year).
PhD Student Positions
Additionally, doctoral students in Sweden are not treated as students, but are actually full university employees, with employee benefits and a salary. This gives you stability and support, allowing you to concentrate on your research.
PhD Council - where doctoral students influence decisions at MMK
The PhD Council is a forum for all issues on the situation of the PhD students, whether it deals with research, teaching, courses or social activities. Members can bring up questions, express opinions or make recommendations which are then taken to the Department Board by two PhD representatives. All PhD students are automatically a member of the PhD Council.
Active participation in the PhD Council is a way to affect your working conditions, both at the department and at the university as a whole. The PhD council is also a social nexus and a good source of information on what´s happening in the department and elsewhere. Elections are held for once a year for the active positions.

What it is like to be a researcher in Sweden?
“being a researcher in sweden has been a dream job”.
“Being a researcher in Sweden has been a dream job since a very early age. When I first came to Sweden for ERASMUS studies, I was inspired by the organization in the educational system and the respect everyone was showing in the academic institutions. As the academia constitutes the cradle of knowledge, I am proud of being part of this community which actively contributes in the generation of innovative ideas which target to solve everyday problems. I also enjoy the close connection to the industry in Sweden”, Varvara Apostolopoulou Kalkavoura, reseacher at MMK.

Division of Biotechnology
Department of chemistry, phd program.
The Division of Biotechnology offers a PhD program of four years, designed to prepare students for productive careers in biotechnology. Its emphasis is training in research, and each student works closely with members of the staff. In addition to the requirement for a PhD dissertation based on original research, students are required to complete advanced courses in biotechnology and related areas, of a total of 60 points. Selection of these courses is tailored to fit the background and interests of each student.
All PhD students are expected to participate actively in the seminar program of the division and students are encouraged to attend and to present papers at regional and national meetings in biotechnology. Teaching experience is an integral part of the PhD curriculum and the PhD students are expected to work as lab-assistants at the various courses given by the department. There is no enrolment form for application of a PhD position. The number of available PhD positions depends on the amount of funding received in the various research fields at the department. If you are interested in a specific field contact the people responsible for the field directly (see the different research areas ) or contact the Head of the division Eva Nordberg Karlsson .
Information about PhD positions can be found on the faculty website.

Researchers in Canada got most of what they were hoping for in the country’s 2024 federal budget, with a big boost in postgraduate pay and more funding for research and scientific infrastructure.
“We are investing over $5 billion in Canadian brainpower,” said finance minister Chrystia Freeland in her budget speech on 16 April. “More funding for research and scholarships will help Canada attract the next generation of game-changing thinkers.”
Canadian PhD students and postgrads plan mass walkout over low pay
Postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers have been advocating for higher pay for the past two years through a campaign called Support Our Science. They requested an increase in the value, and number, of federal government scholarships, and got more than they asked for. Stipends for master’s students will rise from Can$17,500 (US$12,700) to $27,000 per year, PhDs stipends that ranged from $20,000 to $35,000 will be set to a uniform annual $40,000 and most postdoctoral-fellowship salaries will increase from $45,000 to $70,000 per annum. The number of scholarships and fellowships provided will also rise over time, building to around 1,720 more per year after five years.
“We’re very thrilled with this significant new investment, the largest investment in graduate students and postdocs in over 21 years,” says Kaitlin Kharas, a PhD student at the University of Toronto, Canada, and executive director of Support Our Science . “It will directly support the next generation of researchers.”
Although only a small proportion of students and postdoctoral fellows receive these federal scholarships, other funders tend to use them as a guide for their own stipends.
Many postgraduates said that low pay was forcing them to consider leaving Canada to pursue their scientific career, says Kharas, so this funding should help to retain talent in the country.
“This is going to move us from a searing brain drain to a brain gain, and position us to compete on the world stage,” says Chad Gaffield, chief executive of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities, based in Ontario, which supported the campaign.
‘Determined to thrive’
The budget also includes marked boosts for basic research. There is an extra $1.8 billion over five years in core funding for the three federal grant-awarding research councils, as well as $400 million for upgrades to the TRIUMF particle accelerator in Vancouver, and more cash for several other large facilities and institutes across the country. There will also be more than $2 billion for the artificial-intelligence sector in Canada.
“[This budget] really emphasizes that Canada is determined to thrive in the twenty-first century based on science and research,” says Gaffield.
Canada announces new innovation agency — and it’s not modelled on DARPA
Others have pointed out that the vast majority of the money in the budget for the research councils is backloaded, with just $228 million coming in the next two years. This means that the gains will be slow, and could be vulnerable to changes in the political climate, says Alex Usher, president of Higher Education Strategy Associates, a consultancy in Toronto. “Do not count on this money being there after an election,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). Canada’s next federal election is due in October 2025, and the opposition Conservative Party is campaigning on reigning in spending.
The budget also makes some changes to how science funding is organized. Instead of ten different programmes for scholarships and fellowships, with differing levels of support, there will now be a single programme with just three levels — master’s degrees, PhDs and postdoctoral fellowships. Kharas says that this should simplify the system.
The government will also create a new “capstone” research-funding organization to better coordinate the work of the three granting councils and “help to advance internationally collaborative, multi-disciplinary and mission-driven research”, the budget says. It will also create an advisory Council on Science and Innovation, comprised of leaders from academia, industry and the non-profit sector, which will develop a national science-and-innovation strategy to guide priority setting and increase the impact of federal investments. “This should help move us towards a more efficient, well-coordinated and nimble way of supporting research in Canada,” says Gaffield. “I look forward to working with the government to optimize it.”

Chemistry Graduate Student Awarded James L. Carmon Scholarship
UGA Department of Chemistry graduate student Erica Mitchell has been named the 2024 recipient of the James L. Carmon Scholarship, given by the UGA Office of Research. Named for the late James L. Carmon, a UGA faculty member for 36 years who helped make the university a leader in computing research and development, the academic year scholarship was established by the Control Data Corporation and is awarded to a graduate student whose dissertation/thesis research reflects state-of-the-art utilization of computer and/or networking technology in the sciences or creative arts.
Erica Mitchell, a Ph.D. candidate in the Schaefer research group in the Department of Chemistry, investigates the properties of molecules using a combination of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The prediction of reliable molecular properties requires a trade-off between accuracy and computational cost. During her time at UGA, Mitchell has worked to implement explicitly correlated methods, which increase the accuracy of electronic structure theory, and apply density functional methods, which decrease the computational burden. Using automatic differentiation or AD, she is striving to get first- and second-order derivatives of explicitly correlated methods to obtain optimal molecular structures and vibrations at a low computational cost. This research will offer a new approach to achieve molecular properties by utilizing AD for a method with no known derivatives. By generating exact derivative properties of explicitly correlated methods, chemists will have access to highly reliable and accurate results to predict chemical properties, thereby aiding experimental observations.
Congratulations to Ms. Mitchell on this outstanding achievement!
