The 3 Best YouTube Channels for Funny Movie Commentary

Cinematic trailers often look incredible, with heart-pounding action shots and fast-paced cuts, but more often than not, the actual movie is a letdown (looking at you, “Suicide Squad”). One solution to this all-too-common situation is to hear from someone who has already watched the film and can tell you honestly if it is worth your time and money. Look no further than YouTube, where several successful channels create hugely entertaining videos that offer their own take on various feature films. There are many such channels on the streaming platform, but the following three in particular feature wildly entertaining content that projects a quick-witted attitude and an analytical sense of humor.

1. ScreenJunkies

ScreenJunkies is an online movie magazine as well as a YouTube channel owned by Fandom, a global entertainment brand. It currently has 6.74 million subscribers and one of its most popular series is “Honest Trailers,” with its most recent episode receiving over 1 million views. The series, which makes satirical trailers for both TV shows and movies, was nominated for the 2017 Emmy for outstanding short form variety series.

This channel’s first-ever “Honest Trailer” was presented by Ptolemy Slocum, but it was thought that while his voice was funny, it was not quite right for the channel’s content. He appeared alongside other narrators later on, but the first trailer, “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace 3D,” was his only video as the sole commentator. Gannon Nickell was the series’s second narrator and worked on 12 videos before being called into military service and getting replaced by the current narrator, Jon Bailey.

The web series, which first went online in 2012, has been going on for a while now. What started as an original idea has gone a bit stale as other content creators have mimicked its premise. The more frequent uploading has also precipitated a decline in quality. Don’t get me wrong, though: “Honest Trailers” is still funny and one of the best sources for entertaining content; it’s just lost the edge that it used to have when it just started.

2. CinemaWins

Narrated by Lee Boucher, CinemaWins is excessively positive about the things it reviews. It doesn’t create parody trailers like ScreenJunkies; rather, it tallies the “wins,” or positive aspects, of the movie or TV series under review.

The About section of CinemaWins’ YouTube page reads: “Because liking things is more fun than not liking things,” which seems like pretty good reasoning. The page adds that the channel is meant to be an inversion of the more cynical CinemaSins, which is discussed below.

The videos generally advance through the film or TV series while displaying the number of “wins” on a counter on the screen, occasionally accompanied by a funny comment. This takes up most of the video time, but this segment is usually followed by a broader review of the movie or show.  The channel currently has 1.67 million subscribers, with the most recent video, “Everything GREAT about the Invisible Man! (2020),” receiving 196,000 views.

3. CinemaSins

If you prefer to balance out the favorable reviews of CinemaWins, then go to CinemaSins. Despite the names, the two aren’t managed by the same people. Just don’t take the criticisms of your favorite movie to heart, because it’s all in good fun. The “sins” are generally awarded for lousy writing, factual flaws, lousy acting or clichés, all while the movie or TV show is gleefully ripped to pieces.

Jeremy Scott and Chris Atkinson manage the channel and currently have 9.02 million subscribers. One of their more recent uploads, “Everything Wrong With Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 18 Minutes Or Less,” received more than 312,000 views. The channel’s catchphrase is “No Movie Is Without Sin,” accurately demonstrating that even the best movies aren’t perfect.

Unsurprisingly, CinemaSins has received a lot of backlash . A channel so relentlessly critical of films and TV shows, which are usually a source of pride for filmmakers, will obviously rub some people the wrong way. Critics have claimed that the channel fails as genuine criticism because it goes over the top in nitpicking faults and generally lacks understanding about the industry. It has also been called mean-spirited, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts , a director, tweeting: “Things like Cinema Sins simply suck the lifeblood of other people and are often just wrong about intent or how cinema works. It’s terrible.”

Some “sins” awarded are trivial, but on the other hand, the hyperbolic criticism is entertaining and can be balanced out by the upbeat positivity of CinemaWins. Still, some of the points that CinemaSins make are entirely valid and are helpful when deciding whether a movie ticket is worth the price.

50 of the funniest, most searing movie reviews ever written

• Movie reviewers have had some pretty scathing takes on films throughout the years. 
• One reviewer referred to a film as like "Grease: The Next Generation" acted out by the food-court staff at SeaWorld.
• Another riffed "Some movies leave a bad taste in the mouth. This one causes full-on halitosis."

For many viewers, a movie can simply exist as something to fill a void of upwards of 90 minutes. Film critics, who spend their lives scribbling notes in dark theaters, ask for a little more.

" I have a colleague who describes his job as 'covering the national dream beat,' because if you pay attention to the movies they will tell you what people desire and fear in their deepest secrets," the late Roger Ebert wrote in 1992 . "At least, the good ones will. That's why we go, hoping to be touched in those secret places. Movies are hardly ever about what they seem to be about. Look at a movie that a lot of people love, and you will find something profound, no matter how silly the film may seem."

Sometimes the best thing to come out of a movie is a blistering review. INSIDER rounded up 50 of the funniest, most searing movie reviews ever written.

Critics said that heartbreak was preferable to watching "Valentine's Day."

"'Valentine's Day' is being marketed as a Date Movie. I think it's more of a First-Date Movie. If your date likes it, do not date that person again. And if you like it, there may not be a second date." —   Roger Ebert , Chicago Sun-Times.

Critics eviscerated "Twilight," but the movie still made more than $390 million at the box office.

"I've had mosquito bites that were more passionate than this undead, unrequited, and altogether unfun pseudo-romantic riff on 'Romeo and Juliet.'" — Marc Salov , The Austin Chronicle.  

"The Other Woman" wasn't a hit with critics.

"I know what you're thinking ... 'Enough beating around the bush. Just tell us whether you liked it.' Consider this, which I will say in terms this movie would understand, if you were on an airplane, 'The Other Woman'   might not be preferable to simply staring into your empty airsick bag, but it has enough nicely executed physical comedy that in the event you become ill, it is definitely preferable to staring into your occupied airsick bag." — Linda Holmes , NPR.

"The Emoji Movie" has an 8% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

"This is a movie about how words aren't cool, but you can still expect a girl to fall at your feet in response to mild wordplay. Please keep up. Or throw whatever device you’re reading this on into the ocean. Send me a postcard ... tell me what it’s like to be free." — Kaitlyn Tiffany and Lizzie Plaugic , The Verge.

Netflix is making a sequel to "Bright" despite the fact it was totally panned by critics.

"While I had the misfortune to see 'Bright' in a theater, most people will simply press 'play' out of curiosity on their Roku remote. I am willing to concede that this might elevate the experience a little ... the ability to take a quick trip to the kitchen or restroom after shouting 'no, don't pause it' to your partner on the couch will be liberating." — Jordan Hoffman , Vanity Fair.

"Battlefield Earth" was a box-office bust and a critical failure.

"'Battlefield Earth' saves its scariest moment for the end: a virtual guarantee that there will be a sequel." — Desson Howe , The Washington Post.

The basic plot of "Milk Money" perplexed critics.

Roger Ebert imagined what the conversation between studio executives would have looked like when they greenlit the movie:

"Studio Executive A: Kind of like 'Working Girl Turns a Trick?'

"Studio Executive B: Cuter than that. We start with three 12-year-old boys. They're going crazy because they've never seen a naked woman.

"Studio Executive A: Whatsamatter? They poor? Don't they have cable?"

Even fans of the HBO series prefer to pretend "Sex and the City 2" doesn't exist, according to critics.

"When viewed as a rom-com, 'Sex and the City 2' is terrible and crappy and a horrific inversion of everything the show once was. But when viewed as a science fiction film, 'SATC2' is subversive, stylish and chilling. Like The Island from 'Lost,' we may never know The City's true identity — Is it a VR computer program? A malevolent interdimensional god? Satan?" — Cyriaque Lamar , i09.

Making fun of "Gigli" became a national past-time.

"Even making a little game of it, and trying to pinpoint the exact moment when Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez fell in love, stops being fun after a while. Perhaps it's when he says, in an attempt to seduce her, 'I'm the bull, you're the cow.' Or when she beckons him into foreplay by lying back in bed and purring, 'Gobble, gobble' — which could forever change the way you view your Thanksgiving turkey." — Christy Lemire , The Associated Press.

"The Adventures of Pluto Nash" wasn't a hit with critics.

"It's good to know that, if we have to leave Earth someday, we won't have to go without our kitsch. Forensics experts will be digging through the rubble of this fiasco for a long time, trying to reconstruct the accident. How did so many lines fall flat? Why were the action scenes so corny and unconvincing? Who put the stink on this?" — Jack Mathews , New York Daily News.

"Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2" has a 2% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

" At its best/worst, 'Superbabies' hallucinatory idiocy inspires open-mouthed horror at what happens when an ill-conceived premise leads to even more jaw-droppingly misguided execution." — Nathan Rabin , AV Club.

Critics thought "Gotti" was so bad it was almost criminal.

"I'd rather wake up next to a severed horse head than ever watch 'Gotti' again. The worst movie of the year so far, the long-awaited biopic about the Gambino crime boss' rise from made man to top dog took four directors, 44 producers and eight years to make. It shows. The finished product belongs in a cement bucket at the bottom of the river." — Johnny Oleksinski , New York Post.

Critics got personal with their contempt for "Jaws: The Revenge."

"In the just-released 'Jaws: The Revenge' the shark's main course is intended to be Roy Scheider's widow, Ellen Brody, a frumpy middle-aged woman played by boring actress Lorraine Gary, who happens to be married to the president of MCA Universal, which finances the 'Jaws' films and which explains her lead role. Let's put it this way: When you see and hear the nasal Lorraine Gary on screen you want the shark to eat her." — Gene Siskel , Chicago Tribune.

"One Missed Call" didn't warrant anyone's attention, according to critics.

"The kid in front of me spent most of the movie playing Tetris on his phone. I didn't care enough about the movie to ask him to stop, or to find a cooler game." — Wesley Morris , The Boston Globe.

The critical response to "Jack Frost" was icy.

"With emotions as sincere as the soap flake snow on its sets, 'Jack Frost' goes on to show how much fun it is to have a snowman as a loving, though dead, father … As one more Hollywood effort to look on the sunny side of fatality, 'Jack Frost' is so sugarcoated that it makes other recent efforts in this genre look blisteringly honest." — Janet Maslin , The New York Times.

"The Snowman" left critics cold.

"'The Snowman' is like if aliens studied humanity and tried to make their own movie in an attempt to communicate with us. This simulacrum contains all the requisite pieces of a movie, but humanity got lost in translation." — Barbara VanDenburgh , The Arizona Republic.

Critics saw "Batman & Robin" as more of a cash-grab than a movie.

" The people who made this movie — which, as always, is set up for a sequel — will be laughing all the way to the bank. But isn't there someone in that bank who can lock them all inside a safety-deposit vault and throw away the key?" — Peter Rainer , The Phoenix New Times.

"Cool World" was almost universally hated by critics.

"The plot of Michael Grais' and Mark Victor's screenplay is even more nonsensical than it needs to be, revolving around frequent unmotivated trips between parallel cartoon and live-action universes, and around the question of whether cartoon women will have sex with human men." — Janet Maslin , The New York Times.

"Titanic" won 11 Academy Awards, but critics thought it took its sweet time getting to the point.

"'Titanic' is a good, often stunning movie caught in a three-and-a-half hour drift. As we marvel at the physical spectacle of the Titanic's last few hours, we're left staggeringly untouched by the people facing their last moments. This movie should have blown us out of the water. Instead, we catch ourselves occasionally thinking the unpardonable thought: 'OK, sink already.'" — Desson Howe , The Washington Post.

"Howard The Duck" was a one-note movie that prompted critics to question for whom exactly the movie was made.

"The story has no center; the duck is not likable, and the costly, overwrought, laser-filled special effects that conclude the movie are less impressive than a sparkler on a birthday cake. George 'Star Wars' Lucas supervised the production of this film, and maybe it's time he went back to making low-budget films like his best picture, 'American Graffiti.'" — Gene Siskel , The Chicago Tribune.

"Catwoman" is considered by critics to be one of the worst superhero movies ever made.

"The film could have turned out worse, but only via the addition of a Tom Green cameo, or an accident in which the actors caught on fire." — Keith Phipps , The AV Club

Critics thought "Mac and Me" was a discount version of "ET: The Extraterrestrial."

"'Mac and Me,' which opened yesterday at the Guild and other theaters, has a final police shootout and a fiery explosion in which Eric is the victim. When a doctor announced that Eric was gone, a small boy behind me said, 'He ain't dead,' with all the calm assurance of an experienced moviegoer who knows perfectly well that if E.T. came back, so would Eric. Cloning is a dangerous thing." — Caryn James , The New York Times.

Only a sucker would bother watching "Sucker Punch" after reading reviews.

"In the end, though the metaphor of mental institution as battleground is an interesting one to explore, that is not the analysis at the heart of this movie. Nope, 'Sucker Punch' is a two-hour $82 million fetish film examining how hot sad schoolgirls look when holding weapons. Snyder should have just made a porn movie — it might have been better, and it definitely would have been cheaper and more honest." — Dodai Stewart , Jezebel.

"Movie 43" prompted devastating reviews.

"It's as if 'Movie 43' was itself a feature-length f--- you to Hollywood, a movie made simply to show how bad a movie a studio could be induced to make and actors could be persuaded to act in." — Richard Brody , The New Yorker.

The best thing critics could say about "Fifty Shades Freed" was that the trilogy was finally over.

"Universal has had some fun with its marketing campaign, using the tag-line, 'Don't miss the climax.' It's a shame, though, that the posters exhibit considerably more ingenuity than the film itself." — Brian Lowery , CNN.

"A Christmas Prince" falls squarely in the category of "so bad it's good."

"It's a Netflix original movie, but it feels like a violation of nature that it somehow isn't from Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel. Nathan Atkins is credited with the screenplay, but this film is such a perfect amalgam of established tropes that I am not entirely convinced that isn't a pseudonym to keep us from discovering that Netflix has created the artificial-intelligence technology to generate a script using auto-complete." — Dana Schwartz , Entertainment Weekly.

"A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding" seemed to revel in shoddiness.

"It plays like a piece of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan fan fiction, written by a child who actually doesn't know who they are but has watched the 'Princess Diaries' films." — Carly Mallenbaum , USA Today.

Critics thought "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" was far too depressing for a superhero movie.

"An even less charitable way to put it is that a clearly excited 7- or 8-year-old kid sitting in front of me busted out crying and had to be whisked out of the theater by his father within the first five minutes. Perhaps he was unnerved by the harsh, operatic violence of Bruce Wayne's parents getting murdered — the mom's pearls get tangled around the gun, somehow, which allows for some very tight and poignant slow motion — or maybe he was offended by the notion that a 2016 Batman movie felt it necessary to depict Bruce Wayne's parents getting murdered. Either way, this kid bounced." — Rob Harvilla , Deadspin.

Critics thought "Transformers: The Last Knight" was simply too incoherent to describe.

Many thought "The Brown Bunny" was tedious and only remembered for its inclusion of one explicit scene.

Critics thought "I Know Who Killed Me" was embarrassing for everyone involved.

"Pretentious and inane, 'I Know Who Killed Me' arouses unexpected sympathy for its embattled star. 'Should we populate the movie with competent, strong performances, or were we looking for stars?' asks the producer, Frank Mancuso Jr., in the film's production notes. Out of the mouths of producers." — Jeannette Catsoulis , The New York Times.

Critics thought there was nothing redeeming about "Sorority Boys."

"I'm curious about who would go to see this movie. Obviously moviegoers with a low opinion of their own taste. It's so obviously what it is that you would require a positive desire to throw away money in order to lose two hours of your life. 'Sorority Boys' will be the worst movie playing in any multiplex in America this weekend, and, yes, I realize 'Crossroads' is still out there." — Roger Ebert , The Chicago Sun-Times.

"Forrest Gump" won multiple Academy Awards, but it still prompted some biting reviews.

"With two decades of perspective on 'Forrest Gump's triumph, you get the sense that '90s audiences were relieved to see a film that said it was OK — even honorable — to ignore all the bad stuff about war. So, too, was the Motion Picture Academy, which 12 months after lauding 'Schindler's List'   decided, 'Screw it, let's give the awards to the movie that sells cookbooks.' — Amy Nicholson , LA Weekly.

Critics absolutely hated "Life Itself."

"'Life Itself' thinks you're stupid. Or, if not stupid, unable to understand how a movie should work. It's a movie made for people who can't be trusted to understand any storytelling unless it's not just spoon-fed but ladled on, piled high, and explained via montage and voiceover" — Kate Erbland , IndieWire.

"Ridiculous 6" felt intentionally offensive.

"There's the broad racism and misogyny of the piece. After the controversial walk-offs, Netflix claimed that this was 'satire.' It's not. There's nothing satirical about Sandler's bad Native American accent, which totally comes and goes, by the way, or Schneider's Hispanic caricature. Saying that this is satire is like the drunk guy at the bar telling you how many black friends he has after telling a racist joke. Don't fall for it." — Brian Tallerico , RogerEbert.com.

"The Village" felt like a waste of time to some.

The extreme level of product placement in "Crossroads" was an issue for critics.

Critics thought "Grown Ups" was a lazy attempt at comedy.

"The movie is symptomatic of a social attitude that might be called the security of incompetence. Critics thought "Grown Ups 2" was so bad that it made them appreciate the first movie.

Some thought "Suburbicon" was too smug for its own good.

"Mother!" may not have been enjoyable, but it certainly was memorable.

"I admired the camerawork, the wide-angle close-ups of flaring nostrils, and the pandemonium of the crowd scenes in the second half of the film when it goes haywire and insanity reign. Some thought "Freddy Got Fingered" was an embarrassment for everyone involved.

Critics thought there just wasn't anything funny about "Joe Dirt."

The majority of us like watching movies. Sure, the genres we love differ, but there's still little better than losing yourself in a different world packed with a story, a setting, and characters for a couple of hours. The problem is there are so many movies to choose from, with new ones being released each and every week. So what to see?!

This is where movie reviews come in to play. Regardless of whether you're debating if it's worth paying your hard-earned cash to see the latest blockbuster in a theater, or deciding between two or more DVDs to curl up and watch from the sofa at home on a Sunday evening. Thankfully there are a host of different reviewers to choose from, many of whom have set up shop on YouTube .

What follows are five YouTube movie review channels that are a must for movie buffs everywhere.

Epic Movie Review

The Epic Movie Review YouTube channel is a fairly new one, with just three reviews posted at the time of writing. However, assuming these guys don't give up through a lack of interest this channel is definitely worth subscribing to.

We get to see three clearly passionate movie fans giving their opinions on the movie they've literally just seen. These guys start recording the instant they leave the movie theater, with a back and forth between the trio as they digest the film while picking out key scenes and talking points.

Watch For: Honest and unbiased reviews delivered in a satisfying scattergun manner.

Blind Film Critic

That isn't a typo, this movie reviewer is actually blind and has been since birth. His name is Tommy Edison and he operates what has to be the most unique movie review channel on YouTube right now. His videos prove beyond doubt that movies are more than just a visual medium.

We get to hear Edison's thoughts on the latest movies, which he has watched without actually seeing. This means he raises points no other reviewer even notices, with insights into actors' performances based on the tone, inflection, and subtlety of their voices.

Watch For: Reviews delivered from a unique perspective most of us will never experience.

Breakin' It Down

Catherine Reitman is funny, attractive, and intelligent. Oh, and she knows her movies inside-out and back-to-front. Her father is famous producer and director Ivan Reitman, so she grew up around the business, and she's also an actress in her own right .

All of the above means she's more than qualified to review movies, which she does on Breakin' It Down . These aren't serious, po-faced analyses of films; instead they're fun, frivolous, and very entertaining opinions on the latest Hollywood fayre.

Watch For: Funny reviews delivered by a hot woman dressed provocatively.

Kermode + Mayo

Simon Mayo is a DJ on British radio, while Mark Kermode is a movie reviewer that makes regular appearances on his show . This YouTube channel features videos of the two discussing movies in the studio. It sounds dull but is actually thoroughly entertaining.

Kermode is one hell of a movie reviewer. You won't particularly like the guy and you may even disagree with everything he says. But you'll be hanging on his every word as he delivers cutting reviews of the latest flicks. Suffice to say he isn't easily impressed.

What The Flick?!

I've saved what I consider the best until last. What The Flick?! is part of The Young Turks network, but politics rarely plays a part in the movie reviews posted to this YouTube channel. Thankfully. Which is, incidentally, the first place I turn to when weighing up a new release.

What The Flick?! draws together reviewers from across the Web and gets them talking about the movies they've all recently seen. They each have an opinion and hold on to it tightly in order to retain their reputations. It means disagreements are in plentiful supply.

Watch For: A panel of professionals offering expert opinions on movies.

Conclusions

Some of these YouTube movie review channels are populated by reviews from amateurs, while some are from professionals. But one of the great things the Internet has done is blurred the lines between these two approaches. What you often find is that passionate people who do this for fun rather than as a career are more entertaining to watch. And with reviewers of all forms of media it's about finding the ones you trust and which share your personal likes and dislikes.

The Best Free Comedy Movies You Can Watch On YouTube Right Now

We live in overwhelming times. Millions of hours of movies and television branch out across dozens of streaming services, spinning off into infinite fractals of entertainment possibilities. If that sounds exhausting, it's only because it really, really is. Sometimes you don't want to turn your smart TV into a basic cable news chyron of endlessly scrolling movie previews. Sometimes, you just want to watch an actor who makes more money in a day than you do in a year getting hit in the crotch by, say, an animatronic raccoon.

With this struggle in mind, we've tossed together a list of comedy flicks currently available to stream on YouTube, all for the entirely reasonable price of no dollars and free cents. They're by no means the only gut busters offered for free on the service — YouTube has over a thousand titles for you to peruse at your leisure — but they're a solid place to start if you're looking for a candidate for your next movie night.

Galaxy Quest

Nerds are a tough group to impress, so it's no small feat to create what's considered one of the best Star Trek movies ever made. Even more striking: pulling it off without making an actual Star Trek movie.

Director Dean Parisot really stuck the landing with Galaxy Quest , 1999's warmhearted homage to television sci-fi, and the actors whose lives become defined by it. When it first came out, the film was a moderate success, receiving generally positive reviews. More than 20 years later, it's widely considered one of the greatest comedies of all time. David Mamet took it one step further, calling it one of four perfect movies in existence.

He might not have been wrong, either. Galaxy Quest features spot-on performances from Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell, actors that would spend the next few years cementing themselves as performers who could do no wrong. Tim Allen turns in some of his career-best work as Jason Nesmith, the William Shatner to the movie's fictional '80s sci-fi show, taken in by aliens who don't understand that the series they've been watching is pretend. Sigourney Weaver is basically perfect as the Nichelle Nichols analogue, accidentally winding up as the only member of the crew who's actually capable of doing their job. Also, you can spot Rainn Wilson if you keep your eyes peeled, more or less playing what you'd imagine Dwight Schrute would be like if he got his anxiety under control.

Mars Attacks!

"I want the people to know that they still have two out of three branches of the government working for them, and that ain't bad." With these words, President James Dale (Jack Nicholson) assuaged the fears of a nation that had just watched Congress get disintegrated, and carved out a spot as one of the greatest orators in the history of fictional POTUSes .

Mars Attacks! came during that sweet spot in Tim Burton's career: after he'd picked up steam as a visionary director, but before his creative process became "throw darts with character names written on them at photos of Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp." The inspiration for Mars Attacks! came in equal parts from his work on Ed Wood and his fascination with a collection of old trading cards featuring skull-faced martians slaughtering Earth's residents with a full spectrum of over-the-top sci-fi weaponry.

Thanks to a singular vision, an all-star cast, and some of the best hyper-violent slapstick in cinematic history, Mars Attacks! stands out as a definitive weirdness highlight in the career of a director who, for context, had already made Beetlejuice. The martians themselves may have put it best when they said, and this is a quote, "ack, ack ack ack, ack."

Thank You For Smoking

If you like your comedies to punch you right in the solar plexus, while grinning and maintaining eye contact with you, you could do a lot worse than Thank You For Smoking, the 2005 feature film debut of writer-director and controversial  Ghostbuster s -commenter Jason Reitman .

Based on the novel of the same name, Thank You For Smoking follows the life and times of Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), a spokesman for the tobacco industry who is so good at his job, that it's borderline uncomfortable to watch him work. With nothing but charisma and, when the occasion calls for it, a briefcase full of cash, Naylor can seemingly argue his way out of anything. He convinces a guilt-ridden, dying ex-Marlboro Man (Sam Elliott) to keep his opinions to himself. He successfully argues, on national television, that Big Tobacco has more to lose than anti-smoking lobbyists when smokers get sick — he'd be losing a customer, while the bleeding hearts would get another sad story to point at and ask for more funding. 

It's bleak. It's also amazing.

Alan Partridge

Alan Partridge never broke out stateside the way that he did in the U.K.. Even if you've never seen his BAFTA-winning television series or internet video shorts, you've definitely felt echoes of his work any time that you watched a British comedy that had you straddling the fence between laughing uncontrollably and curling into a cringing ball of vicarious humiliation.

Partridge, played by Steve Coogan, is the brainchild of Coogan and Veep creator Armando Iannucci. He's the quintessential British media personality, minus the self awareness that reminds a person to stop talking until it's already ten seconds too late. In 2013, 22 years after the character's debut on BBC Radio 4, Partridge got his first feature film, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. Released simply as Alan Partridge in the U.S., the movie comes out of the gate with immediately quotable lines and a range of human behaviors that will make you sympathetically nauseous.

Here in the year 2021, we're all pretty much aware that Andy Samberg is a precious jewel who must be protected at all costs. In 2007, he was still just two-seasons deep into his tenure at SNL , and vocally optimistic about his new movie, Hot Rod, getting terrible reviews. In an Entertainment Weekly article entitled "Andy Samberg gets stupid in Hot Rod," he reveled in the idea that critics would hate the picture, pointing to other classics that took years to find a permanent audience.

Directed by The Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer, Hot Rod definitely fit the bill. Reviewers were not kind to the picture, which tells the story of a too-earnest-by-miles aspiring moped stuntman, and his never-ending quest to beat up his stepdad, Frank (Ian McShane).

Today, Hot Rod is one of those comedies with no middle ground in terms of viewership. People either hate it, or keep a copy of it loaded into their DVD player at all times. The bad news is that this habit has probably melted the disc by now. The good news is that Hot Rod is now available to stream for free on YouTube.

Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) found her name trending on social media on Thursday night, but perhaps not for reasons she may have wanted.

Britt delivered the Republican rebuttal to President Joe Biden ’s State of the Union address from her kitchen with theatrical flourishes, such as taking a deep, dramatic breath after using the word “breathtaking.”

Britt Tells Misleading Border Story in State of the Union Response

The Alabama senator used a story about sex trafficking to criticize the Biden administration’s border policies. But the events occurred in Mexico years ago.

The opposition party’s response to the State of the Union address is a golden opportunity for up-and-coming and lesser-known politicians to introduce themselves to the nation and boost their political profile.

Such was the case for Katie Britt, a first-term Republican senator from Alabama who, despite being a newcomer to the national stage, has been mentioned as a possible choice to be Donald J. Trump’s running mate. But her big debut on Thursday night has been marred by intense scrutiny of an anecdote at the center of her speech, which was delivered from her kitchen in Montgomery, Ala.

The story, about a Mexican who was a victim of sex trafficking at the age of 12, came in the context of an attack on President Biden’s border policies. In impassioned tones, Ms. Britt described a girl being raped multiple times a day in dire conditions at the hands of cartels before she was able to escape.

“This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it,” Ms. Britt said. “President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”

As a rhetorical device, it would be hard conjure up a more powerful and resonant example. But the story was highly misleading and improperly contextualized.

The woman referenced by Ms. Britt was, in fact, never trafficked across the border, nor has she sought asylum in this country. And her harrowing experience took place between 2004 and 2008, while a Republican, George W. Bush, was in the White House and President Biden was still a senator.

In other words, it had nothing at all to do with the current administration’s border policy. But that didn’t stop Ms. Britt from inflaming public fears about immigration and placing blame at Mr. Biden’s feet.

“We know that President Biden didn’t just create this border crisis,” she said. “He invited it.”

Although Ms. Britt did not name the victim in her speech, she has previously shared the story of a woman who appears to be the same individual based on congressional testimony, news releases and news reports.

That woman, Karla Jacinto Romero, is a Mexican citizen who does not live in the United States and who has spoken frequently about her experiences of being forced into sexual slavery for four years. In 2023, Ms. Jacinto participated in an event in Texas near the border with Mexico that was also attended by three senators , including Ms. Britt. In a video released shortly after that trip, Ms. Britt discussed Ms. Jacinto’s experiences.

Ms. Jacinto, who spoke with the Times Saturday from Mexico, said she had not been informed ahead of time that Ms. Britt would be discussing her in the speech and only learned about it after a video pointing out the deceptive framing of the senator’s speech was posted by the independent journalist Jonathan Katz on TikTok on Friday.

“I only found out via social media,” said Ms. Jacinto, who continues to speak frequently about human trafficking and who is supported by a U.S.-based nonprofit, Reintegra , that provides educational grants to victims of sex trafficking in Latin America. “I thought it was very strange.”

She said she preferred to keep politics out of the question of human trafficking. “I am involved in the fight to stop trafficking and I don’t think it should be political,” she said. “The work I do is not a game.”

A spokesman for Ms. Britt, Sean Ross, stood behind her speech.

“The story Senator Britt told was 100 percent correct,” he said in a statement. “And there are more innocent victims of that kind of disgusting, brutal trafficking by the cartels than ever before right now. The Biden administration’s policies — the policies in this country that the president falsely claims are humane — have empowered the cartels and acted as a magnet to a historic level of migrants making the dangerous journey to our border.”

Mr. Ross did not respond to a follow-up question about what direct responsibility the Biden administration had for what Ms. Jacinto experienced or what an anecdote about sex trafficking entirely within another country had to do with U.S. border policies.

Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman, said in a statement that Ms. Britt’s remarks were “debunked lies.”

This is not the first time that Ms. Jacinto’s experience has been used as a political bludgeon.

The January 2023 event, held in Eagle Pass, Texas, was organized by Marsha Blackburn, the Republican senator from Tennessee, who framed it as a mission to “examine the disastrous effects of Biden’s border crisis firsthand.”

At the event, Ms. Jacinto was accompanied by a former Mexican congresswoman, Rosi Orozco, who is active in human trafficking matters and lives in the U.S. The two women sat on a round table panel focused on human and sex trafficking and were featured in a short video with the three senators.

Soon thereafter, Ms. Blackburn published an op-ed headlined “Biden’s open border is not compassionate or humane.” After describing Ms. Jacinto’s travails, she wrote: “It is clear that we are experiencing a humanitarian and national security crisis, courtesy of President Biden.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for Ms. Blackburn said that “for years, Senator Blackburn has fought to prevent sex trafficking and has met with victims, such as Karla, to hear about the horrific abuses that occur.” The statement added that “countless women and children are sexually trafficked into the U.S.A. due to Biden’s open border agenda. Under President Biden, human trafficking has skyrocketed from a $500 million business in 2018 to around $13 billion a year in 2022.”

Andy McCullough, the executive director of Reintegra, which first helped Ms. Jacinto in 2017, providing funding so she could finish high school, said he was stunned to learn how Ms. Jacinto was portrayed at the Texas event and, again this week, in Ms. Britt’s speech.

“They presented Karla as someone who was trafficked across the border, and that’s not her story,” he said. “This issue is so horrific, and yet the narrative is being manipulated to make it a political thing. This is re-exploiting the very victims of exploitation that we are trying to help.”

Ms. Jacinto, 31, has been speaking against human trafficking for years. In 2015, she met Pope Francis at the Vatican and also spoke at a House foreign affairs subcommittee on global sex trafficking organized by Republican Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey. The hearing focused on strategies for combating the problem in other countries, rather than describing them as a product of U.S. border policies.

Concerned about how her story was being portrayed by politicians, Mr. McCullough brought Ms. Jacinto on as staffer at Reintegra last March, hoping that the organization could protect her and her message, paying her a small stipend and arranging for speaking opportunities.

“This issue is horrendous,” Mr. McCullough said. “If we make it a political thing or a religious thing, we take away the reality of how awful it is. All of humanity should be fighting this issue.”

Loosely based on the experiences of real-life porn sensation Rocco Siffredi , known as the “Italian Stallion,” Netflix ’s “ Supersex ” isn’t actually very sexy at all. Instead, the seven-part series, created by Francesca Manieri, is a tale about family, masculinity and toxic bonds. While the show, which stars Alessandro Borghi in the lead role, has some interesting chapters, the surrealist elements — including some hallucinatory moments and the bizarre way some of the sex scenes are filmed — make it more than a biographical account. Instead, it’s an overly complex examination of relationships and the vices people indulge in to escape their emotional turmoil.

Series opener “Superpower” acts mainly as a coming-of-age story. Following Rocco’s retirement news, the show zips back to 1974. Ten-year-old Rocco Tano feels trapped in the impoverished rural town of Ortona and lost in the chaos of his family life. His mother is devoted to his mentally disabled brother Claudio, and Rocco lives in the shadow of his charismatic older half-brother, Tommaso (Adriano Giannini). Tommaso is Rocco’s North Star. He represents a type of freedom and hypermasculinity that appears out of reach for the men of Ortona. Tommaso also has the love of the town’s most stunning woman, Lucia (Jasmine Trinca), which only endears Rocco to him further.

In addition to examining Rocco’s family dynamic, “Supersex” zooms in on his fixation on sex, which begins at a very young age. The series unpacks his crush on Lucia and later his discovery of “Supersex,” a pornography magazine starring Gabriel Pontello. The euphoria from observing and later engaging in sex is a feeling Rocco chases across the next three decades. But his sex work comes at the expense of his mental health. It also destroys the romances and familial bonds he tries to form and maintain.

Despite a lifelong admiration of Tommaso’s machismo, his brother’s treatment of Lucia, who funds their lifestyle through her sex work on the streets of Paris, slowly shifts Rocco’s point of view. An invitation to a sex club awakens previously unknown desires. Becoming a porn star gives him financial security, but his inner turmoil stems from trying to live up to the expectations his family places on him.

“Supersex” dwells far too long on Rocco’s dysfunctional brotherhood with Tommaso, giving the toxic and exhausting connection unneeded exposition. Fewer episodes and less time spent on the self-destructive café manager would have kept the storyline squarely on Rocco’s psyche. Moreover, Manieri positions Lucia’s life as a counternarrative to Rocco’s. As with Rocco’s female co-stars, she isn’t allowed the same agency and status he obtains. Women are sexualized and then vilified for being sexual in the same breath. While Lucia eventually finds herself on a new path, it’s not without suffering and sacrifice, difficulties Rocco never contends with. The pair are an intriguing juxtaposition, but this mirroring gets muddled under their dark pull toward Tommaso. Similarly, Rocco’s enthusiasm for rough sex acts is never fully explored.

Still, “Supersex” makes some smart choices. Intercourse and other types of sex are showcased, of course, but these scenes aren’t gratuitous. Instead, they illustrate Rocco’s emotional state as he deals with loss and yearning or even demonstrate his self-worth.

The penultimate episode, “Resurrection of the Bodies,” is the standout and centers on Rocco’s return to Ortona amid his mother’s illness and one of the biggest highlights of his career, winning best European actor at the Hot d’Or Awards. In 53 minutes, Rocco confronts the effects of shame and how so-called family members react to him when he’s no longer playing by their rules.

Though Rocco’s story is solidly depicted, audiences hoping for a bio-series-type narrative won’t find it here. It’s also worth noting that Netflix offers a dubbed English version, but the show is best viewed in Italian with subtitles. Overall, “Supersex” isn’t just an examination of one man’s life and career but a look at the lives people create, however unconventional, when they dare to move through the world as their most authentic selves.

“Supersex” premieres March 6 on Netflix .

SNL turns Katie Britt’s State of the Union rebuttal into ‘Scary Mom’ audition

“Saturday Night Live’s” cold open delivered a stinging parody of Republican Sen. Katie Boyd Britt’s rebuttal to President Biden ’s State of the Union address Thursday night.

The skit roasted Britt’s choice of a kitchen as a backdrop and her misleading linkage of a sex-trafficking case in Mexico to the Biden administration’s border policies.

Played by Scarlett Johansson, SNL’s Britt declared she was “auditioning for the part of Scary Mom” with a scene that, in line with Thursday’s address by the senator from Alabama, included family photos, a faucet and a fruit bowl on the countertop.

“I’m worried about the future of our children. And this is why I’ve invited you into this strange, empty kitchen. Because Republicans wanted me to appeal to women voters. And women love kitchen,” Johansson’s Britt said.

The kitchen backdrop drew criticism from Democrats and even some Republicans who said the domestic setting undermined Britt’s stature as a senator, The Washington Post reported .

But it was the way Britt set up an anecdote about a Mexican victim of sex trafficking that came under the most intense scrutiny after her Thursday address. She appeared to imply that it happened under the Biden administration on U.S. soil, when in fact the woman she referred to was forced to work in brothels in Mexico two decades ago, was never trafficked across the border and has never sought asylum in the United States.

Johansson’s Britt segues into the anecdote by insisting she’s a regular mom: “I’m not performing.” (Actual Britt, 42, is the youngest woman ever elected to the Senate, with school-age kids at home.)

“Like any mom,” Johansson’s Britt says, “I’m going to do a pivot out of nowhere into a shockingly violent story about sex trafficking.”

“Rest assured, every detail about it is real except the year, where it took place and who was president when it happened,” Johansson says. The woman Britt referenced testified before Congress about being forced to work in Mexican brothels from 2004 to 2008, when George W. Bush was in the White House and Biden was still a senator.

A viral TikTok by journalist Jonathan Katz first revealed that Britt was speaking about Karla Jacinto Romero. Britt’s communications director, Sean Ross, in a phone conversation with The Washington Post’s Fact Checker, Glenn Kessler , disputed that Britt’s language was misleading, saying Romero’s story was indicative of trafficking that is now happening at the border.

The SNL skit also played on comparisons between Britt’s rebuttal and the archetypal mom-themed infomercial. At one point, Johansson’s Britt offers viewers a chance to buy “these gorgeous bejeweled cross necklaces.”

She finishes with the lines: “To the American people who are struggling right now, know this: We hear you. We see you. We smell you. We’re inside your kitchen right now looking through your fridge. And what’s that on the top shelf? Migrants.”

And a message from “Scary Mom” to President Biden: “I’ll just say this, Mr. Biden, this isn’t the last you’ll see of Katie Britt. Maybe not in politics, but when you close your eyes, I’ll be right there,” delivered with Johansson’s trademark husky voice.

Kung Fu Panda 4 Streaming Release Date

Kung Fu Panda 4 will eventually be released on Peacock , followed by Netflix. As per Universal's streaming arrangements for animated movies, Kung Fu Panda 4 will be available on Peacock for four months before moving to Netflix for the next 10 months. It will then return to Peacock for four additional months before being made available on Prime Video.

Universal has yet to announce a streaming release date for Kung Fu Panda 4. Two of Universal's biggest animated releases of late — Trolls Band Together and The Super Mario Bros. Movie — came to Peacock 120 days after their theatrical debuts. Should the distributor follow suit here, Kung Fu Panda 4 would come to Peacock around July 6.

What Is Kung Fu Panda 4 About?

Kung Fu Panda 4 is the latest movie in Universal Pictures' animated action-comedy franchise starring Jack Black. Here's the official synopsis:

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior, is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

Even worse, there’s been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon, a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

So, Po’s going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen, a corsac fox who really gets under Po’s fur but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon’s reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.
