Let’s Being with the Essay on Wildlife Conservation for Students in English

Like forests, wildlife consisting of animals, birds, insects, etc. living in the forest is a national resource, which not only helps in maintaining the ecological balance but is also beneficial for various economic activities that generate revenue from tourism. The rich flora and fauna also play a major role in maintaining the ecological balance of a region. There was a time when human needs were minimal and there was bare interference in the wildlife. There is no denying the fact that due to urbanization, pollution, and human interventions wildlife is rapidly disappearing from the planet.

Today the biodiversity of the world is threatened due to the extinction of species. There are thirty-five hotspots around the world, which supports 43% of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians as endemic. The IUCN has compiled a list of species and has classified the different species under extinct, critically endangered, less endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, and least concerned. This list is called the Red Data Book. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the number of birds, animals, marine and freshwater creatures has dropped by almost one-third of its earlier population.

Causes for Decline or Threat to Wildlife

One of the major reasons for the constant decline of wildlife is human’s ever-increasing demands and greed that have led to deforestation and habitat destruction. For development and urbanization, man has chopped down trees to build dams, highways, and towns and this has forced the animals to retreat further and further into the receding forests.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization due to the fast growth in population in recent decades have taken a heavy toll on wildlife. Global warming and extensive environmental pollution have largely threatened wildlife as they lead to habitat destruction and rising temperature.

There is a huge demand for animal fur, skin, meat, bone, etc. across the globe that has led to a decrease in the wildlife population. Poachers kill the animals for the illegal trading of their body parts. For example, elephants are massively poached for ivory, rhinoceros are poached in Assam for their horns. The desire to keep animals in captivity or their desire to consume certain animals as exotic food has resulted in the disappearance of many animal species such as tigers and deer.

Forest fires, food shortage, increase in the number of predators, extreme weather conditions and other extraneous reasons have led to the extinction and endangerment of many species. For instance, the recent forest fires in the Amazon (Brazil), Uttarakhand (India), Australia, etc. lead to the death of many animals every year.

Many types of animals, birds, and fauna are needed to retain the ecological balance. They are considered necessary for scientific research and experiments that will benefit mankind.

Steps to Conserve Wildlife

The protection and conservation of wildlife is the need of the hour. Some conservation efforts which are widely implemented are given below:

Afforestation:

First and most importantly, humans need to have control over their needs. We need to prevent man from felling trees unnecessarily. Trees should be replanted if they are felled.

Pollution is one of the major causes that have led to the destruction of the habitat of animal species. Pollution of the environment like air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution hurts the entire ecosystem. It has become of utmost importance to control environmental pollution.

More campaigns must be launched to raise awareness in humans on the need to keep our environment clean. A man should be responsible to maintain a healthy and balanced ecosystem so they should be cordial with the environment. More organizations like PETA should be set up to create awareness among people for the protection of wildlife.

Population:

The man should consciously put a check on the rapid growth of the population. The slow growth of population will decrease the rate of urbanization and that will have a major impact on the preservation of wildlife.

Wildlife Sanctuaries:

Wildlife sanctuaries should be made to ensure the protection of the areas of ecological significance. Under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 various provisions for protecting habitats of wildlife are made by constructing national parks and sanctuaries. These parks and sanctuaries ensure the protection and maintenance of endangered species.

Ban of Illegal Activities:

Illegal activities like hunting, poaching, and killing animals, birds, etc. for collections and illegal trade of hides, skins, nails, teeth, horns, feathers, etc. should be strictly prohibited and severe punishments and fines should be imposed on people who do these kinds of activities.

Community initiatives

Communities come together to take various conservation initiatives such as the establishment of community forests, raising their voice against illegal activities, creating awareness among the masses, raising voice for the rights of the animals, conserving animals of cultural significance, and many more. For example, members of the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan are very vocal against poaching activities in the region.

Many countries have taken the initiative to help animals by proclaiming various birds and animals either as national animals or as protected species. In India, the government has launched a program of Joint Forest Management to protect the wildlife and their habitat. Under this program, responsibilities have been assigned to the village communities to protect and manage nearby forests and the wildlife in them.  Animal species have the right to live just like humans. Therefore, we should take every step to conserve them and ensure their survival and betterment.

Wildlife is an integral part of our planet. Wildlife plays a significant role in the ecology and the food chain. Disturbing their numbers or in extreme cases, extinction can have wide-ranging effects on ecology and humankind. Valuing and conserving forests and wildlife enhance the relation between man and nature. We want our future generation to be able to hear the lions roar and peacocks dancing with their extravagant feathers and not just see them in picture books. We must take steps today or else it will be too late and we should always remember

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.”

Deforestation

Deforestation is also a major cause of wildlife loss. Mass murders of wild animals are taking place all over the globe for their meat, bones, fur, teeth, hair, skin, etc. The need for conservation of wildlife has now become a necessity.

Population growth, agricultural and livestock development, urban and road building, and pollution are among the many pressures on wildlife’s natural habitat. In addition to illegal hunting, the decrease of habitat and its degradation has endangered the biodiversity of the widespread areas.

Wildlife preservation does not imply blanket protection for all species of fauna and flora; rather, it means adequate, judicious control over the multiplication of crops and animals that communicate to provide a suitable atmosphere for the man whose very life is at risk today.

In the past, due to the irrational use of the earth’s natural and biotic resources, most wildlife was demolished after recovery. It is our immediate responsibility to safeguard the ecosystem’s natural splendor and to develop a system of coexistence with every living creature on earth.

While the world’s nations must be very specific in terms of wildlife conservation, the amount of wildlife is diminishing day by day. The World Wild Life Fund is a global organization that does a praiseworthy job of encouraging wildlife protection. National agencies are also involved in wildlife conservation.

Wildlife conservation is the practice of protecting plant and animal species and their habitats . Wildlife is integral to the world’s ecosystems , providing balance and stability to nature’s processes. The goal of wildlife conservation is to ensure the survival of these species, and to educate people on living sustainably with other species. The human population has grown exponentially over the past 200 years, to more than eight billion humans as of November 2022, and it continues to rapidly grow. This means natural resources are being consumed faster than ever by the billions of people on the planet. This growth and development also endangers the habitats and existence of various types of wildlife around the world, particularly animals and plants that may be displaced for land development, or used for food or other human purposes. Other threats to wildlife include the introduction of invasive species from other parts of the world, climate change, pollution, hunting, fishing, and poaching. National and international organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the United Nations, and National Geographic, itself, work to support global animal and habitat conservation efforts on many different fronts. They work with the government to establish and protect public lands, like national parks and wildlife refuges . They help write legislation, such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 in the United States, to protect various species. They work with law enforcement to prosecute wildlife crimes, like wildlife trafficking and illegal hunting (poaching). They also promote biodiversity to support the growing human population while preserving existing species and habitats. National Geographic Explorers, like conservation biologists Camille Coudrat and Titus Adhola, are working to slow the extinction of global species and to protect global biodiversity and habitats. Environmental filmmakers and photographers, like Thomas P. Peschak and Joel Sartore, are essential to conservation efforts as well, documenting and bringing attention to endangered wildlife all over the world.

Essay on Preservation of Wildlife For Students & Children

We are Sharing an Essay on Preservation of Wildlife in English for students and children. In this article, we have tried our best to provide a short Preservation of Wildlife Essay for Classes 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12, and Graduation in 200, 250, 300, 500 words.

Wildlife preservation is a matter of urgent concern all over the world. Many animals are in danger of extinction; that is, they are gradually disappearing. Such animals are called endangered species. Saving such animals from extinction is called conservation.

There are two dangers that threaten the wildlife of the world. An animal is said to be endangered when people kill it indiscriminately. Some people go on killing elephants for their ivory. Alligators are killed for their skin. Many kinds of birds are killed for their feathers. Man kills them out of greed. He wants to make a profit at the cost of these animals. If such killings are not checked, these animals may totally disappear from the world.

There is an even more serious threat to the animals. People cut down the trees of the forest for various reasons. When this goes on for a long time, the animals living there lose their home. Trees are cut for fuel or timber. Then the forest area goes on diminishing gradually. Sometimes even the governments do this when they want to construct dams or reservoirs. Thousands of acres of forest land are cleared. The animals living there are thrown out of their habitats.

Is it such a serious matter if a few animals are killed? Can we not lead a safer life without these dangerous animals like snakes, tigers, and lions? But the truth is that if one species of life is removed, it is like removing one link from a chain. The ecosystem is sustained by a delicate balance. Wildlife is an important part of nature. Plantlife and animal life constitute a complex balance. It is like a fabric in which all the threads are neatly woven into a pattern. If species after species of animals are killed, it is like removing thread after thread of the fabric. Finally, no life will be left on this planet.

  • Habitat Loss – The unwanted clearing of forests and agricultural land to make several building projects, roads, dams is leading to major habit loss of different wildlife animals and plants. These activities deprive animals of their home. As a result either they have to move to some other habitat or becomes extinct.
  • Overexploitation of Resources – The resources are meant to use up in a wise manner but if used in an unnatural way leads to overexploitation of the same. The overuse will foster the extinction of the species.
  • Hunting and Poaching – The act of hunting and poaching is really a miserable one as it involves the trapping and killing up of animals for the enjoyment of obtaining some product. Some of the animal’s products are valuable ones, for example, ivory, skin, horn, etc. They are obtained by making the animals captive or hunting and further killing them after obtaining the product. This is leading to increasing mass extinctions, an example is musk dear.
  • Using Animals for Research Purpose – There are many of the animals, chosen for testing results in the laboratory of research institutes. Taking them in such a large number of results in the mass extinction of the species.
  • Pollution – The unwanted changes in the state of the environment leads to a result in a polluted one. And so is the air, water, soil pollution. But the alteration in the quality of the air, water, the soil is directly responsible for the reduction in the number of animal and plant species.
  • The marine biodiversity is greatly affected by the contaminated water; the chemicals present in the water ruptures the functional activities of marine biota. The coral reef is greatly affected by the temperature changes and contamination.

There should be a positive approach to the conservation of wildlife. There are many policies and plans and initiatives by the government already working for protection purposes. The wild animals and plants which are easy to protect or conserve within their own habitat should be protected following the in-situ conservation measures. The animals and plants which are unable to remain safe in their own habitat or are facing the extinction terrors should be conserved within laboratories or some reserves following ex-situ measures.

Essay on Wildlife Conservation

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – Wildlife Conservation: Factors, Types, Importance and Projects

Wildlife conservation is the phenomenon of protection and management of wildlife facing the danger of extinction. Wildlife is an important feature of our ecology. They are the animals or plants which are the supporting systems of our ecosystem. They are living in wilderness in some forests or jungles. They are helping in maintaining our ecological balance. The inhuman practices are leading wildlife creatures to become endangered or extinct. India is rich in biodiversity, but there are many factors leading to the loss of the same.

Factors Leading to Wildlife Destruction

  • Overexploitation of resources
  • Habitat loss
  • Habitat fragmentation
  • Hunting and poaching
  • Climatic changes

Types of Wildlife Conservation

  • In-situ Conservation – In this type of conservation, species of plants and animals, and their genetic material are protected or conserved within their habitat. The areas are termed as protected areas. They are national parks, sanctuaries, biosphere reserves.
  • Ex-situ Conservation – This conservation technique involves conservation or protection of the species of plants and animals and also the genetic material outside their habitat. This is done in form of gene banks, cryopreservation, tissue culture, captive breeding, and botanical gardens.

Importance of Wildlife Conservation

  • Ecological balance
  • Aesthetic and recreational value
  • Promotes to maintain biodiversity

Wildlife Conservation Efforts in India

  • Project Tiger: This project was launched by the Government of India in 1973, with an initiative for protection and management of the reducing population of the tiger. The Bengal tigers were reducing drastically in their numbers and their habitats too as a result of increasing human activities and advancements. Therefore in order to protect their habitat and their numbers, project initiative was taken. The project was administered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

The main objective of the project was to maintain the habitat of the tigers from destruction. Secondly, ensuring a rise in the number of tigers.

The project had a positive approach in saving our Royal Bengal Tigers, as their number increased from 1000-5000 approx. At an initial level, there were 9 protected areas which came up to become 50 till 2015. This was really a successful attempt towards the conservation of the Tiger our national animal.

  • Project Elephant: The increased developmental activities like construction of roads, railways, resorts, buildings are leading to the clearing up many forests and grazing spaces which results in the destruction of the habitat of different wild animals. The same was observed with elephants too. Project elephant was launched by the Indian government in 1992 to conserve the number of elephants, maintenance of their habitat, reduce human-animal conflicts, as well as reduce hunting and poaching.

This project was launched at the central level, but the initiative was taken up by the states, funds were also provided to different states according to the requirements. 16 states were mainly implementing the act.

  • Crocodile Conservation Project: This project was launched in 1975, at different state levels. The objective of the project was to prevent the habitat destruction of the crocodiles and thus helping to increase their numbers. The hunting and killing of the crocodiles should be monitored. As a result of this initiative, the numbers have been increased from 100 to 1000 till 2012.
  • UNDP Sea Turtle Conservation Project: This project launched by UNDP, aims at properly managing and conserving the reducing numbers of the turtle population.

The results of population explosion and urbanization have to lead to an increase in the activities of cutting down forests and turning them into buildings, hotels, or places of human settlements. This results in a reduction of the habitat of different forest-dwelling species. They have to leave those places and search for new habitat which is not very easy. The search for new habitat, a lot of competition for food, carries many of the species towards the verge of extinction.

Wildlife animals and plants are important aspects of nature. A loss at any level may lead to unnatural consequences. They are responsible for the ecological balance and for the sustenance of mankind, the balance must be maintained. Therefore along with the conservation efforts by the government, it’s our social responsibility, to individually put our efforts in conservation of the wildlife.

Conservation of Forest Essay

Forests are integral to the environment—they provide us with air, water and food; they help protect against floods and other natural disasters. But forests are also under threat—from illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and deforestation. We must take steps to conserve our forests if we hope to avoid the consequences of their destruction. Here are a few sample essays on ‘conservation of forest’.

100 Words Essay On Forest Conservation

200 words essay on forest conservation, 500 words essay on forest conservation, factors responsible deforestation.

Conservation of Forest Essay

Forests are one of the most important natural resources on the planet. They provide us with food, fuel, and shelter, as well as many other products that we use in our everyday lives. Forests also play a vital role in regulating the Earth’s climate and maintaining biodiversity. Despite all of these benefits, forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. According to the World Wildlife Fund, forest cover has decreased from 30% of the world’s land surface in 1950 to just 6% today. The main cause of this loss is deforestation, which is often done to clear land for agriculture or other development projects.

The loss of forests has serious consequences for both people and the environment. For example, forests help regulate global temperatures by absorbing carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere. As more forests are lost, there is less vegetation to absorb this gas, leading to an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels and a corresponding rise in global temperatures. This climate change can have devastating effects on ecosystems and human societies around the world.

Many species find their natural home in the forest. This habitat must be protected because it provides animals with a safe haven where they can find food, water, and shelter while avoiding danger. Additionally, woods support a stable temperature and give food to animals that dwell in them or rely on them for survival.

There are many different species on the planet, and it is our duty to protect them. While some animals are endangered and in risk of extinction, others require conservation. The planet will be better off the more we can do to help these animals. It is essential to conserve our species and the environment because the Earth's resources are running out. Many individuals are ignorant of the several advantages of wildlife conservation for society. It also aids the environment by lowering pollution and safeguarding endangered species.

Forests are essential for the sustenance of life on this planet. They provide us with air and water, remove carbon dioxide, shield us from natural calamities, and shelter a large number of our wild creatures. Unfortunately, forests are disappearing from the planet. We will lose them forever if we do nothing now.

Climate change is both a cause and a result of the ongoing degradation of our forests. This damages the habitat of many plant and animal species that are unable to adapt to changing environmental conditions. The ecosystem must be protected for future generations, and we must all do our share to protect it.

There are various factors responsible for the destruction of forests. Some of the important factors are as follows:

Population Pressure | Population growth is one of the important factors responsible for the destruction of forests. With the increase in population, there is an increasing demand for forest resources like timber, fuelwood, etc. This has led to the large-scale cutting of trees and the destruction of forests.

Agricultural expansion | Agricultural expansion is another major factor responsible for the destruction of forests. In order to expand agricultural land, people clear forests and convert them into fields. This leads to large-scale deforestation and loss of forests.

Grazing | Grazing is one of the important reasons for the degradation of forests. When livestock graze in a forested area, they damage vegetation and soil structure, leading to soil erosion and loss of fertility. This eventually leads to the loss of forest cover.

Mining | Mining is another major factor responsible for forest destruction. Mining activities lead to deforestation as well as soil and water pollution, which damages the environment and destroys forests.

Industrialization | Industrialization is another significant factor that contributes to Forest destruction. The establishment of industries requires a large amount of land, which results in deforestation. Additionally, industries release harmful pollutants into the air and water, which pollute the environment and destroy forests

How We Can Help

It is essential that we take steps to protect our remaining forests and prevent further deforestation. Here is how we can protect our forests—

One way to do this is through forest conservation, which is the practice of protecting forested areas and managing them in a sustainable way. Conservation efforts can include creating protected areas, such as national parks, or working with local communities to promote sustainable forestry practices.

One of the most important ways we can conserve forests is by using less paper. We can do this by recycling the paper we use, using both sides of the paper when we print or copy, and avoiding excessive printing.

In addition to using less paper, we can also help conserve forests by using products made from recycled paper or from sustainably grown trees. When we buy products made from recycled paper, we are helping to create a market for this type of paper, which encourages manufacturers to use more recycled content. Similarly, when we choose products made from sustainably grown trees, we are supporting forestry practices that help protect our forests.

Finally, we can also help conserve forests simply by enjoying them. Getting out into nature and appreciating the beauty of the forest helps us to value these ecosystems and motivates us to work towards their protection.

Essay on Conservation of Wildlife 400 + Words

Introduction

Conservation of wildlife is one topic that is often overlooked, but it is one that needs to be addressed. The disappearance of animals from the earth has caused a lot of concern, and there are many ways that we can help conserve wildlife. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the ways in which you can help conserve wildlife and why it’s so important. We will also give you some tips on how to get involved in conservation efforts and make a difference.

The Purpose of Conservation

The purpose of conservation is to protect wildlife and their habitats so that they may continue to exist and thrive in the future. There are many ways to achieve this goal, but one of the most important is by conserving animals’ genetic diversity. This allows populations to adapt to changing conditions and ensure that the unique genetic traits that make each species irreplaceable are preserved.

What is Wildlife Conservation?

Wildlife conservation is the practice of managing natural populations of animals in a way that enhances their ability to survive and reproduce. The goal of wildlife conservation is to sustain the populations of wild animals in healthy numbers and habitats while protecting their natural environment. One way to conserve wildlife is to prohibit hunting and poaching. Hunting and poaching can decimate animal populations, as these activities often involve taking an animal from its natural habitat for the purpose of sustaining human food supplies or sport. Additionally, these practices can cause great harm to the environment by damaging or destroying vital habitat. Another method of conservation is reducing the negative impact humans have on the environment by adopting responsible habits such as conserving energy, using transportation alternatives, and reducing our consumption. By making small changes in our everyday lives, we can make a big impact on preserving wildlife and their habitats.

Types of Conservation Efforts

There are a variety of conservation efforts that can be undertaken to protect wildlife from extinction. These include habitat restoration, population regulation, captive breeding, and education. Habitat restoration is the process of repairing or replacing damaged or lost habitats to support thespecies’ needs. Population regulation is the use of measures to control the number of individuals in a population for the purpose of preserving biodiversity. Captive breeding is the artificial propagation of species in captivity so that they can be sustained in numbers and preserved. Education is the dissemination of information aboutwildlife and their habitats so that people can make informed decisions about how to protect them.

What are the Benefits of Wildlife Conservation?

Wildlife conservation has many benefits to society, both present and future. Positive impacts include providing economic value to local communities; conserving natural resources; maintaining biodiversity; achieving environmental justice; supporting tourism and recreation; and enhancing human well-being. Negative impacts of wildlife conservation can be reduced by balancing the needs of humans with those of wildlife. Some of the most important reasons why wildlife conservation is important include that it provides economic value to local communities. For example, in Zimbabwe, elephant poaching generates an estimated $1 million per year for criminal networks (Foley et al., 2010). Conversely, community-based ecotourism in Uganda supports approximately 165 jobs and brings in $2 million annually (Hamilton et al., 2007). Thus, although wildlife conservation may have negative consequences for some individuals or groups who interact with wildlife illegally, it can provide substantial benefits for local populations through employment generation or tax revenue collection. Conservation also preserves natural resources for future generations. In nature, animals are limited in their ability to regenerate lost body parts or reproduce after death due to predation or disease. By protecting habitats and species from extinction, wildlife conservation helps ensure that these processes continue. Biodiversity is a key attribute of healthy ecosystems and is essential for the survival of numerous species (O’Neill et al., 2009). With more than 7 million known plant species alone and over 1 million animal species on Earth, our planet is home to an extraordinarily diverse array of life forms

Wildlife conservation is a critical issue that demands our attention. We need to work together to protect the animals that we share our planet with, and educate ourselves about their needs so that we can take action in support of their conservation. I hope this essay has helped you understand why wildlife conservation is important, and given you some tips on how you can help support the preservation of nature. Thank you for reading!

Animals are killed to fulfill those blind beliefs. So, for the conservation of wildlife in India, these superstitions need to be removed from society.

On 9th September 1972, the parliament of India enacted this act and after that, the destruction of wildlife has reduced to an extent.

But due to some factors like excessive poaching, illegal trading, loss of habitat, pollution, etc, several animals and birds are standing on the border of destruction.

Though the Government of India is taking steps to protect Wildlife, the integral heritage of India, every citizen of India must think it to be his duty to protect wildlife. Some of the steps taken by the Government of India toward Wildlife conservation in India are –

Creating wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks.

Launching of Project Tiger

The hunting and trading of animals need to be controlled by the government by imposing strict laws in order to succeed in Wildlife Conservation. India is becoming a good example to the world for its taken for wildlife conservation. The wildlife protection act, of 1972 is working like a milestone in the conservation of wildlife.

Conservation of Forest Essay

500+ words conservation of forest essay.

Forest conservation is the practice of planting and maintaining forested areas for the future. Forests play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance and bringing the monsoon. They are essential for the survival of life on Earth as they provide oxygen, which is essential for all living organisms to survive. Apart from these, they provide a wide range of resources we use in our everyday lives. But, human activities are destroying forests to fulfil their greed. Thus, there is a need for forest conservation. Efforts should be made to stop this destruction from causing serious environmental problems. With the help of the conservation of forest essay, students will know various methods of forest conservation to reduce environmental damage. Students must practise CBSE Essays on different topics to gain command over the writing section. This will also help them to score high marks on English papers.

A forest is a complex ecosystem mainly composed of trees, shrubs and herbs. They are home to different plants, birds, insects, mammals, reptiles etc. A large variety of life forms exists in the forests. Even microorganisms and fungi are found in forests, which are important for decomposing dead organic matter and thus enriching the soil. Nearly 30 per cent of the total land area is covered with forest, which accounts for 4 billion hectares of forest on the earth’s surface.

Importance of Conserving the Forests

Forests provide various natural services and products. Many forest products are used in our day-to-today lives. Forests store carbon and act as carbon sinks. They produce oxygen, which is important for the existence of life on earth. That’s why forests are also called the earth’s lungs. They help in regulating the hydrological cycle, purify water, absorb toxic gases and noise, provide wildlife habitat, maintain planetary climate, reduce global warming, conserve soil, reduce pollution, and mitigate natural hazards such as landslides, floods and so on. Thus, forests play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and also contribute to the economy.

Forest Conservation Initiatives

The loss of our forest can be stopped by putting efforts from the citizens, forest conservation organisations, and governments. Various laws, like the Forest Conservation Act, have been prepared and are being implemented by the government of India. The Forest Conservation Act of 1980 was enacted to control deforestation. In 1988, this act was amended to facilitate stricter conservation measures. The government also implements many schemes for the conservation of forests and their sustainable management. The Joint Forest Management (JFM) programme is a good example of involving local communities in managing and restoring degraded forests.

People’s participation in the conservation of the forest is of vital importance. The perfect example of people’s contribution towards forest conservation is the Chipko movement in the Himalayas. The movement was successful due to the efforts of the local residents to save the forest of Tehri Garhwal. The women cling or hug the trees tightly and dare men to cut them. Thus, the movement gained a lot of popularity and became famous around the world. The cutting down of trees in forest areas must be stopped at all costs. At all functions, festivals and celebrations, we must build a habit of planting trees.

Wildlife Conservation Success Stories in North America

Posted: March 6, 2024 | Last updated: March 6, 2024

a short essay on conservation of wildlife

The 21st century has seen its fair share of challenges and triumphs regarding wildlife conservation efforts in North America . While anyone can quickly feel overwhelmed by the decline of many species or the threat of extinction, North American governments and organizations have worked tirelessly to reverse the decline of endangered creatures on the continent.

With dedicated efforts, cooperation, decisive investments, and innovative conservation practices, North America has successfully brought multiple creatures back from near extinction and restored the balance of ecosystems.

This article is all about wildlife success stories in North America.

In the mid-20th century, the bald eagle range drastically plummeted, with only 500 creatures soaring across North America in the 1960s. The widespread use of dangerous pesticides, chemicals, and DDT contaminated the food chain, thinning the shells of bald eagles’ eggs and killing their young.

The North American government soon recognized the situation’s gravity and took prompt action to protect the bald eagles. In 1967, the government listed the bald eagle as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Legal protection helped rebound the number of bald eagles to over 14,000 today.

<p>This article discusses 20 different endangered species in America. Each species has an important role in the ecosystem and their conservation is of utmost importance to maintain ecological balance. </p> <p>The magnificent California condor has the largest wingspan of any North American Bird, reaching up to 9.8 feet. Unfortunately, this species is critically endangered, and conservation efforts are working hard to bring them back from the brink of extinction. However, they can still be found in parts of California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja California in Mexico. </p>

California Condor

The giant land bird in North America, the California condor, was about to become extinct by the late 20th century because of lead poisoning, poaching, and habitat destruction.

In 1987, the Fish and Wildlife Service in the U.S. made a bold but risky decision to reverse the decline of California condors. All 27 remaining species were captured in the wild, and efforts were focused on breeding the birds at the Los Angeles Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Breeding efforts turned out to be successful, and thus, in 1991, the condor recovery program started releasing the creatures back into their natural habitats. Since then, the population of these birds has grown, with the number increasing to 1,000 in 2019.

<p>Grizzly bears are a brown bear subspecies and are among North America’s most iconic wildlife species, particularly in Alaska. They can be found in various habitats across Alaska, from the coastal areas where they fish for salmon to the alpine meadows and Arctic tundra. They require large territories for foraging and mating. Grizzly bears are not listed as endangered; however, they are protected under the Endangered Species Act. They are threatened by habitat fragmentation and loss. Although grizzly bears are solitary <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/animals/animals-list/" title="animals">animals</a>, they communicate with one another through vocalizations, body language, and scent marking. </p>

Grizzly Bear

Within the lower 48 states, the population of grizzly bears reduced to only 2% of their former range because of habitat conversion, excessive hunting, and fragmented habitat. In 1975, these creatures were listed under the Endangered Species Act and, thus, brought under federal management. That year, fewer than 250 bears inhabited the Yellowstone area.

Since then, the combined efforts of conservation organizations, state and federal agencies, and citizens increased the number of animals to over 700. Approximately 1,400 to 1,800 grizzly bears inhabit the lower 48 states.

<p>A 1964 survey reported that peregrine falcons didn’t inhabit even a single cliff in the east of America. Thanks to these practices, the number of peregrines increased to about 3,000 in North America.</p>

Students in an introductory seminar on conservation photography learn that a camera can be a powerful tool for change.

a short essay on conservation of wildlife

Conservation Photography students show off their burgeoning camera skills. (Image credit: Susan McConnell)

A group of Stanford first-year students gathered around a dock on a sunny February day in Moss Landing Harbor, weighed down by cameras, lenses, and extra snacks. The group was listening to a short talk from their professor, Susan McConnell, who was giving them pointers on photographing wildlife from a moving boat.

“The shorter your focal length, the less you have to worry about blur,” said McConnell, the Susan B. Ford Professor, Emerita, and professor of biology in the  School of Humanities and Sciences . “And so I think I’m going to use ‘shutter priority’ with my own camera.”

The students clambered onto a pontoon boat run by Elkhorn Slough Safaris and soon had their first wildlife sighting of the day: a California sea lion with a large fish in its mouth. A chorus of shutter sounds erupted from the group as the students rushed to photograph the sea lion before it slid back under the water.

These first-year students are enrolled in “Conservation Photography,” an  Introductory Seminar  course that covers the history, practice, and applications of photography focused on conservation and the environment. McConnell, a developmental neurobiologist by training, began teaching the course in 2010.

“I’ve always had a passion for wildlife and photography,” said McConnell. “And some of my own mentors were passionate and ardent conservationists.”

Students come to the course with varying levels of photography experience, but the syllabus covers more than how to use a camera. Over the quarter, the students learned about how photography has been used to influence social movements and causes throughout history, including during the Civil War, in the establishment of the National Park system, and during the movement to outlaw child labor in the early 1900s.

The course is structured around what McConnell calls the “Four A’s”: Appreciation, Analysis, Advocacy, and Activism, and students examine photography case studies related to those themes throughout the quarter. For instance, the class examined photographs related to the climate crisis when learning about activism photography.

“We need to fix this, and how are we going to use images to actually alter people’s behaviors?” said McConnell. “What kinds of images are going to personalize the fact that climate change is everywhere and it’s affecting people’s lives now?”

Putting new skills to work

This guided tour of Elkhorn Slough was a chance for students to test their photography skills in the field, and see coastal wildlife up close.

“I haven’t done a lot of photography,” said first-year student Megan Chiang, before the tour began. “Honestly, anything I can see would be awesome.”

Elkhorn Slough and Moss Landing provided a unique backdrop for McConnell’s course. In addition to the abundant wildlife, she encouraged the students to photograph the human activity surrounding the slough, where wildlife is thriving despite humanity’s influence on the area.

“There’s this incredible juxtaposition of nature and the harbor itself,” said McConnell. “As you go into the slough, there’s farmland, and issues of runoff, and then the power plant itself, which is a big player in the area.”

The boat was still in the harbor, but the students had already seen hordes of sea lions, flocks of marine birds, and a sea otter. Young male sea lions crashed into the water and playfully fought along the harbor’s docks as the tour guide taught the students about the history of Moss Landing and the creation of Elkhorn Slough, which is home to one of the nation’s largest marsh restorations.

a short essay on conservation of wildlife

First-year student Sam Warren didn’t have much photography experience before this quarter, but thought that the course might relate to his interest in environmental justice.

“I think photography has historically been a great way to further a lot of environmental justice causes,” said Warren. “And to bring communities that might be viewed as smaller by society to the front of those conversations.”

As the boat made its way out of the harbor, the students were greeted by more wildlife: pelicans and gulls perched on a made-made rock pile, and sea otters swam and hunted around the boat.

While most of the students were excited to see otters and seals, first-year student Emily Chu was happy to see so many birds on this trip.

“I’ve always loved birding specifically,” said Chu. “And I was never able to learn how to properly take photos of birds. I love spreading information about birds and bird conservation, so I wanted to learn to use photos to tell a story.”

Into the slough

As the boat continued into Elkhorn Slough, the students learned more about the area’s history of industry and conservation, as well as some fun facts (sea otters have favorite rocks that they use to smash open mollusks, and the animals may carry around the same rock for months or even years). The slough provides an excellent habitat for otters – in fact, sea otter populations may be reaching their carrying capacity in the area, showcasing the endangered species’ excellent local recovery, even amid the industrial backdrop.

At the end of the course, students generated a photo essay related to a local conservation or environmental issue. While many students chose to focus on wildlife on or near campus, others wrote about sustainability issues facing the Stanford community. Some students hope to apply their new photography skills to their other passions.

First-year student Antonio Vega said he’d never touched a camera before this class.

“I’m from the Sonoran Desert, which is one of the most biodiverse deserts in the world,” said Vega. “Nature is something that has always captivated me, especially pertaining to my culture. So I want to use a new skill that I can learn in this class to tell a story from the perspective of my people in a different way, capture nature in a different way, and be able to immerse myself in a different environment.”

The group continued to spot an abundance of wildlife throughout the tour, including harbor seals lounging on the muddy shores, sea lions with pups, and flocks of wading birds. At the end of the trip, the tour guide called out some statistics: the group had seen 52 sea otters, 67 harbor seals, 88 sea lions, and 29 species of birds.

Although they were thrilled to see so much wildlife, McConnell and her course assistant, Marina Luccioni, hope that students take away a larger message from the trip.

“Everyone in this class is so passionate and motivated, and it’s so hopeful to me to see such an awesome group of students who care about conservation from a lot of different angles,” said Luccioni, a graduate student in the Laboratory of Organismal Biology at Stanford. “We’ll see what students do to make their photos not just cute photos of otters eating, but something a little more meaningful.”

The Land We Share: A Love Affair Told in Hunting Stories

This program was previously recorded in the Byrd Auditorium at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV on April 3rd with authors Christine Cunningham and Steve Meyer who presented their new book  The Land We Share: A Love Affair Told in Hunting Stories.

Book cover - The Land We Share, (left side) close up of Steve Meyer with arm around dog; (middle photo) hunting dog standing on mountain with rocks; (right side) closeup of Christine sitting on mountain side with hunting dog

Welcome to The Land We Share , where relationships and connections are forged through experiencing the migration of caribou, the winged movement of waterfowl, and misty mornings in the field. Here the too-short lives of good dogs intersect those of the people with whom they hunt for elusive birds and inspiration in the wild public lands of Alaska and the Dakotas. These essays are written by Steve Meyer, a lifelong hunter, and Christine Cunningham, a lifelong Alaskan who embraced hunting later in life. Accompanied by a family of bird dogs, the two authors delve into how hunting on public lands nurtures the human spirit, sustains physical health, and deepens appreciation for the natural world. Although most stories are set in Alaska and the Dakotas, their messages and themes resonate across the nation, appealing to both hunting advocates and those with a profound connection to the outdoors. The 61 short stories about a large family of bird dogs take place in beautiful settings with a resonant core of day-to-day appreciation for the natural world that nurtures the spirit, sustains health, and connects us to the land we share.

These talks are a part of the NCTC Conservation Lecture Series , which is co-sponsored by The Friends of the NCTC .  and the WV Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers . No tickets or reservations are required.

All are welcome!
