Buying Computers: Computer Buying Guide

Lesson 1: computer buying guide, computer buying guide.

Whether you're looking for your very first computer or are just upgrading to a newer machine, buying a computer can feel overwhelming. With so many options to choose from, it's tough to know if you're getting the right computer at the best price.

That's why we've created this page: to guide you through the process of buying a new computer with as little stress as possible.

What kind of computer should I get?

different types of computers

There are many different types of computers you may have heard of, such as desktops , laptops , and tablets . But before you start shopping, you'll need to think carefully about the kinds of things you want to do with your computer .

For example, if you only need something for email and light web browsing, you'll probably buy a very different computer from someone who does a lot of video editing or PC gaming. You should also think about where you want to use your computer because it will have a big impact on the type you buy.

How much should I spend?

buying a computer

Once you've decided on the type of computer you want, you'll need to start thinking about how much money you want to spend. This is probably one of the more confusing things about buying a computer, and that's because you'll find options across a wide range of prices—from as low as $250 to well over $1,000.

These prices are based mostly on the internal components of the computer, such as the amount of hard-drive space, memory, processing power, and so on, which are called the specifications (or specs for short). These internal components are also a big part of the reason computers can become outdated or obsolete after only a few years. As manufacturers continue to create faster processors and larger hard drives, a computer that costs $1,000 today might only cost $500 in a few years.

So, very generally, we recommend spending between $300-$800 on a new computer , depending on your needs and budget. And if you really don't have much to spend, we'd still suggest buying a machine with even slightly higher specs than the absolute cheapest model. A computer with more hard drive space, more memory, and faster processors will be a much better deal in the long run.

Common PC brands

We recommend only purchasing computers from a well-known manufacturer, such as Dell , HP , Lenovo , Acer , Asus , Toshiba , or Samsung . While store brands will be less expensive, they're also much less reliable and will likely become obsolete much sooner than a name-brand computer.

What about Apple/Mac computers?

apple computers

So far, we've been mostly talking about computers that run the Windows operating system, which is the most common OS for PCs. But in addition to tablets and smartphones like the iPad and iPhone, Apple sells desktop and laptop computers, which use the OS X operating system.

They're well-made machines, but they're also very expensive , especially compared to some of the computers above. Because they don't use Windows, you probably won't be able to install any existing Windows software you already own. And because even the cheapest Apple laptop will cost at least $1,000, we'd only recommend purchasing an Apple computer if it's well within your budget.

Where should I buy my computer?

Once you've chosen a computer, you'll have to decide where to purchase it . As with most things these days, you can choose to buy a computer at a larger retail store—like Best Buy , Target , or Walmart —or online. If you're buying online, you'll be able to choose from big online retailers like Amazon or NewEgg , or through a computer manufacturer's website, such as Dell , HP , or ASUS .

Can I buy a used computer instead of a new one?

comparing used and new computers

If you're trying to save money, you might consider buying a used or refurbished computer instead of a new one. Refurbished computers are machines that originally had some kind of defect but that have been restored to working condition; they're often available with the same internal components as new machines, but for much less money. Just make sure the seller offers some kind of warranty so you can return the computer if it doesn't work.

Here are some of the places we'd recommend looking for refurbished products:

You can also buy previously used computers, but you'll want to be cautious when doing so . Whether you're buying it from a friend or a site like eBay or Craigslist, it's much more difficult to guarantee everything will be in good working condition. And it's even less likely you'll get your money back if it stops working.

One other thing to note: If you're buying a computer that's already a few years old, just remember that it will probably go out of date much sooner than a new machine. If you decide to buy used, we'd only recommend buying a used machine that's less than two years old and still in good working condition.

Buying a Computer

Assignment 3.

Imagine you’re about to celebrate a significant event where gift-giving is traditional, such as a milestone birthday. To commemorate the occasion, a relative of some means, but who doesn’t know you all that well, wants to give you a personal computer. The thing is, said relative claims to know next-to-nothing about computers, especially which one(s) would be suitable for you, but does know there are lots of options, over a wide price range. The relative makes it very clear that, although cost is not the main concern, it does matter, and that “wasting” money on “toys” is not going to happen. Family has warned you that this relation is no fool. For instance, do not expect to be believed if you say that to write papers for college you need 3-way stereo speakers and a state-of-the art 3D graphics card. You can ask for such things, but you had better give a good, convincing reason for getting them.

So, you get the computer system, but only after you identify what you want, and justify why you need it, to the relative’s satisfaction. (Don’t you just love gifts with strings attached?)

What to Turn In

• A Word document file containing a letter to your relative explaining what computer system you want, and why you want it. See the discussion below for details to include.

• In a separate Word document, provide

a list of references to the material you used to help make your decision as to what computer system to request, and

starting on a separate page, a list of the search engines you used (including their names and URLs) and a couple of paragraphs or so on how helpful each of the engines was in finding information useful in completing this assignment.

How to Proceed

First, think about the activities for which you plan to use the computer, both now and in the next few years. Many folks buying computers fail to take this extremely important, basic first step, and end up with a system that doesn’t meet their needs. Then think about the software and hardware you need to meets these needs. Then go looking at the options; as you do, you may find your opinions of your needs or wants influenced by what’s available, its cost, and whether you can “sell it” to your relative. Decide on a system; write the letter.

If you already have a computer system, consider the trade-offs between a new system and an upgrade in hardware or software (or both) of your existing one; you can assume your relative will go for either approach (as long as you make a good case). Your relative will not agree to fund ongoing costs, so s/he might cover the cost of that DSL modem, but not the monthly costs of DSL service.

Issues to Consider

You are required to address the following issues; you can look at additional ones for potential extra credit. Note that looking at a piece of hardware or software does not mean you must obtain it; for instance, you can decide you don’t need a printer or that memory upgrade. But you do need to address the issue in your letter (e.g., tell the relative that you current printer prints in color, is fast and that the ink it uses is cheap, so it’s fine for printing out those photos you need for your digital art class).

• Mac vs. “PC clone” which model; which operating system to use on it

• Desktop vs. laptop vs. hand-held

• “Main box characteristics”: speed of CPU, amount of memory, size of hard disk drive, DVD vs. CD that is read only vs. one that is read/write, and its speed; modem type

• Whether to have external speakers (and if, so, which ones to get); size and type of display

• What kind of printer, if any, and its characteristics

• What software packages and tools

You may decide to go for a “package deal,” or to buy things separately (for instance, you can buy a computer and display as one package and buy the printer separately). We’ll assume for this exercise you’re not interested in building your own computer from lower-level components. When you go for the package, you may have no choice about some components; for an additional fee, vendors will sometimes let you “trade up” Some software may come with the hardware; some may need to be purchased separately.

Information Sources

Obvious places to look for information include the following sources; there are others, of course. You are required to use the sources marked with a bullet (•). For each source you use (marked or not), list it in your references document. We don’t require any specific format for your references, but they should be clear and complete enough that you&151;or we&151;can find them again quickly and easily. For instance, don’t just say “the class textbook”: give authors, title, year of publication, publisher, and pages referenced; don’t just say “my friend Kaitlin”: give her full name and contact information; give specific Web and news group addresses. Several standard reference formats (such as those used by professional journals or associations) exist, many described on the Web; of course, feel free to use one of them. (Don’t mix reference formats; doing so can easily confuse the reader.)

• Class lectures on this material

• Information in Abernethy and Allen

• Web sites

You must visit at least three Web sites of vendors of hardware and/or software. You must visit three non-vendor web sites or newsgroups that discuss or evaluate hardware and/or software.

You might be wondering how to find such sites. One way is just guessing an address and hope it connects to the place you want (yes, www.apple.com goes to Apple computer’s site). But you’ll usually have better luck using a search engine or two.

• Print sources

Surprisingly, perhaps, but several local major computer stores do not have a Web presence and you’d might be missing out on some great deals if you didn’t check them out. So, you are required to use advertisements from at least one print source that is no more than two weeks old. (Prices and availability change quickly in this realm!) A great place to look is in a newspaper. If you don’t have easy access to one, copies of local ones are available in the UCI library.

Radio and television

These media have shows on computing and lots of advertising about computing. Tape such things for reference, and use the information they provide.

• Yourself

You have personal experience with computing and computers; you are a particularly important point of reference; after all, this computer system is for you! Be careful, though: no one has experience with everything, and the technology can change quickly. Let past experience be a guide, but not blind you to new options that may better meet your needs.

Sales representatives

Go to a store that sells computer hardware and/or software. Look around; read the posted information; ask questions of sales staff. Take notes so you don’t forget what you learned!

• Other people

You must spend at least 15 minutes talking with another person with some knowledge of these issues. You can have this conversation one-on-one, or as part of a group. An easy way to meet this requirement is ask your TA to talk about these issues in discussion. You can talk with the instructor. You can obviously talk with friends and family. Try to make sure the folks you talk with are giving you informed opinions and not just repeating sales hype.

Optional Work

For potential additional credit, you can

• Use more than the required types or numbers of sources.

• Investigate additional system components, such as scanners, multimedia or gaming gear, or computer-based peripherals (e.g., digital cameras, Web cams, smart phones, MP3 players).

• Compare and contrast using a 56K telephone modem with DSL, cable modem, and/or wireless services for providing data communications and internet access; choose one (or more!) for your new system. In your letter to your relative, include your choice and the reasons for it, at an appropriate level of detail. In a written report to your TA (included in your submission folder), compare the benefits and downsides of at least two of these options, and your reasoning (beyond that already given in the letter) for choosing the one you did.

• Experiment more with the search engines; provide a report on the strengths and weaknesses of these engines when looking for computer hardware and software.

• Investigate other areas related to this assignment’s scenario, with your TA’s prior approval. (For instance, suppose you decide to obtain a new system, yet already have one. You could investigate the options for selling your used equipment, or for scrapping it responsibly; for instance, displays contain toxic materials.)

Computer Purchasing Analysis Assignment

' src=

One could argue that purchasing a computer is akin to searching for a spouse; it needs to be both reliable and dependable while also offering compatibility and helping an individual achieve their goals. The variety of laptops currently on the market is astounding. There is essentially a laptop for everybody depending on their budget and criteria and many websites available to assist consumers make informed, technologically savvy decisions. CNet. om is among the leading websites in terms of reviewing various technological devises, laptops included. In their mission statement they assert that their company’s goal is to provide consumers with the “information, tools, and advice that help you decide what to buy and how to get the most out of your tech. ” (CNet. com) Another reputable site is PC World, a magazine both online and in print which objectively reviews the most current computer and IT technology. Both of these sources were key in assisting my purchasing decision.

When in the process of choosing a laptop to purchase, I had to itemize the list of basic tasks that I needed it to perform as well as any other special features that I could ultimately employ. I am a student, wife and mother and so the main uses of my laptop are for writing papers, doing research, paying bills, online banking, listening to and downloading music, shopping, loading pictures and watching DVD’s. I had narrowed down the search to two laptops with the help of CNet. com and the online PC World Magazine. CNet. om highlights a feature called the “Best 5 Laptops,” in which it details its editors top five choices along with information describing why those particular computers were chosen. Among them one had no price listing and two were out of the price range of this assignment. From the two eligible computers, one met my purchasing criteria and standards. This laptop, The Gateway NV7915u is described by CNet’s editors as having an “impressive mix of features” for its cost. Some of those features include Intel’s Core i3 processor, excellent multitasking features and a large screen with great sound output, all for $599.

Don’t waste your time! Order your assignment!

I was almost immediately sold, however, after doing further research, I found what I felt was an even better option through the reviews on PCWorld. com. The computer that I chose is the Toshiba NB205-310 priced at approximately $400. 00. This laptop received both top reviews among the editors from PC World, as well as from those who had purchased and then reviewed it. One of its most enticing features is its extremely long battery life as well as an easy to type on enlarged keypad.

In addition, it is lightweight and has a large enough memory which would very comfortably suit my requirements. Although the laptop that I chose comes with certain standard software such as Microsoft: Works 9, I felt that it would be necessary for me to purchase a better program to assist me and my distinct needs, such as writing papers. I therefore chose to equip my laptop with Microsoft Office 2007, in particular the Office Home and Student, which is geared towards my exact specifications. This package is priced at $149. 95 and is comprised of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

I also felt it necessary, that in making a large investment in hardware to additionally purchase an anti-virus protection program in order to assure the security of my laptop. Being that I use my computer for online shopping and banking the Norton AntiVirus is known to have an excellent performance record. As there was enough money still left in my budget, I chose to purchase a two year download of the All-In-One security package for $134. 99. This program offers improved parental controls, improved vulnerability protection, protection from phishing scams and automated Backup and Restore, among other superior protection features.

Currently, the Toshiba NB205-310 is equipped with 1 GB of RAM, which although is not that much, is sufficient for the purposes that I need. However, if in the future I am to require more, there are further RAM purchasing options. As most of my budget has been depleted, when I am able to save more money, I would in ultimately like to buy a four-in-one printer, which includes a printer, scanner, fax and copier. As a student, I am constantly writing papers and these features would greatly assist me in that task.

I haven’t yet chosen the make or model for this hardware as there are constantly new models being created and perfected. As for now, I believe that I have made the best choice in hardware for both myself and my family. BIBLIOGRAPHY Ackerman, Dan and Stein, Scott. “Best 5 Laptops. ” CNet. com, April 16, 2010. Web.
