Long Speech on Leadership Qualities

A warm welcome to everyone present here today. I feel honored to be given this opportunity to give a speech on leadership. I hope this speech makes you think about what a leader is. What is the role of a great leader and what are the true leadership qualities?

Let us go back to the history of the world. Many events happened around the world. Events such as injustice towards people, slavery, racism, and dictatorship. During all these events the universe provided us with a few people who rose to the occasion and helped humanity to fight injustice. They taught us how to fight, they led us towards a better future, and those my friends were leaders. Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin king Luther Jr and so on were present to lead and guide people towards a better future. One quality that was common in all of these leaders was that they had this amazing ability to persuade people to respect and follow them.

Firstly let’s just not confuse leadership with dictatorship. A good leader will never dominate or subjugate people because of their sex or position in society, that is done by a dictator and the best example of a dictator was Adolf Hitler. Surely he had thousands of followers but he dominated them and made them forcefully adapt his mentality, a good leader will never do that. The world is full of people who have a great desire to take charge and forcefully rule over other people’s lives and call themselves a leader which rests assured, is not a sign of a leader.

So who is a true leader? Well, a true leader is someone who is known for his work ethic, A true leader is someone who earns respect through his rightful actions and mass following without any dictatorship. A true leader inspires others in his or her group to be better persons. A great leader will inspire other people to follow in his/her footsteps to become a guiding light for humanity. A good leader will always lead the people towards the path of growth and progress by carrying the torch of wisdom. As the phrase goes ‘Action speaks louder than words, a true leader will never tell people to follow them but the benchmark he or she has set and his or her actions will allow people to trust in him or her. A good leader will always set the goal and will start working towards the goals to achieve it without compromising morals and ethics and this is a sign of a true leader.

Let us take the example of Mahatma Gandhi, you could ask anyone about him and the only general answer the crowd will give is that Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader. A journey of a great leader starts with an incident and this could be applied to Gandhi as well. Mahatma Gandhi had settled down in South Africa with his family practicing law but one night during his train journey he was exposed to the cruelty of people in the society towards those with different skin color. He saw that he was a judge because he was an Indian and was considered to be inferior because of his skin. This incident is considered to be the turning point in Mahatma Gandhi’s life. After the incident, he decided to change the perspective of people and also to free India from British rule, and as they say, the rest is history.

Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi possess a great quality of effectively channelizing their energy and also devote themselves to a cause or the growth and progress of humanity. Nelson Mandela, Martin King Luther Junior, and many more have this ability and are considered to be a pattern found in great leaders. The restrictions or the obligations they faced only enabled them to rise against all odds and never bow down to any circumstances.

Leadership is not an easy task and I can assure you that it cannot be cultivated within a day. It is not for people with weak hearts who cannot tolerate hatred, betrayal, and jealousy. A true leader will always have a goal and vision and he or she with his or her team will work every day to accomplish that dream. We often see that in a few working places many bosses call themselves leaders but are never present to help or appreciate the work the employee has done. This is not a sign of a leader. A true leader will always work with the team and listen to the concerns of everyone and also note down the ideas that would be helpful to complete the given task. A true leader never boosts himself or herself for the work and will always try to understand the team.

My dear friends, I want to conclude this speech by saying that it is not easy to become a great leader in a day, week, or year. It is a process of facing your fears, discomfort, and failure. A true leader will always learn from his past mistakes and will always try his or her best to correct those mistakes. A true leader will also respect his team members and will always help them, guide them when they are in need. So if you want to be a good leader, start practicing gratitude and always respecting people irrespective of their profession. Thank you.

A true leader is someone who is known for his or her work ethic. A true leader is known for his/her actions which allow people to trust him or her. A true leader will always guide everyone and help them to find themselves on the darkest path.

The world has had many great leaders in the past such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama, and so on. The one quality of truth that is common in many leaders in the past is that they could influence and guide people for the betterment of society. For example, When Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States of America, the country was in a recession phase where the citizens were suffering as many of them did not have proper medical facilities, food to eat, etc but Barack Obama was able to guide everyone. He was able to understand everyone and the difficulties the common people were facing and finally in 2014 he was able to make America recession-free.

The qualities of great leaders cannot be cultivated in a day, month or year as it requires years of patience and to have the ability to understand the situation and lead from the front. Great leaders are always committed to their goals and they have great respect for every person in a team.

To conclude this speech I want to say that it is not easy to become a  good leader within a day or years as it requires years of hard work. Leadership is also not for the weaker hearts as many leaders deal with hardships and sacrifices for the betterment of society. Anyone can be a good leader if the qualities required to become one are practiced from an early age. Thank you.

How to Write a Student Council Speech

Being a member of the student council can help you help your school. However, it takes hard work to get into the student council . You need to craft a good speech that gives your classmates incentives to vote for you.

Sample Speeches

Writing the Introduction

• Do not merely start by saying, "My name is ___ and I'm running for student council." Your classmates will already know as much and this is not really a unique statement. There will be time to state the basic information after you've got the class's attention. [1] X Research source
• You can open with a question. Something like, "If there was one thing you could change about this school, what would it be?" Or a question that adds some humor , like, "I know what you're thinking. Why should I listen to this person?" and then proceed to lay out your credentials. Quotes on leadership, power, and guidance would also make good openings. However, make sure to double-check your sources and especially if you're finding quotes online. Many online quote databases, like Quote Garden or Brainy Quote, sometimes attribute quotes to the wrong sources. [2] X Research source
• If you're stuck, look up and read famous speeches. You can find many speeches from presidents, world leaders, civil rights activists, and others online. Pay attention to how they opened their speeches and ask yourself, "Was this interesting? Do I want to keep reading/listening? Why?" [3] X Research source

• State your name and grade in school. This may feel somewhat unnecessary if you go to a small school, but it's considered a formality. If you're missing this part of the speech, you may end up looking sloppy in comparison to other students. [5] X Research source
• State what you want. That is, what you're running for. Do you want to be the president , vice president , treasurer, secretary? Even if you think most students are aware of what position you're running for, make sure you state it here to remind them. [6] X Research source
• Try to keep this section brief as it's not as important as your qualifications and plans to improve the school . Even one sentence would suffice. For example, "My name is Ramona Hart, I'm in the 11th grade, and I'm running for treasurer of the student council."

• Any accomplishments relevant to the position warrant mentioning here. If you're running for secretary, for example, talk about your summer job filing papers in your uncle's law firm. If you're running for student council president, talk about your leadership experience being captain of the swim team. [7] X Research source
• While this section is important, try to keep it minimal. A couple of sentences laying out your qualifications is enough as the body of your speech is where you should spend the most time. For example, let's go back to the above example. From there, we could say, "I am currently enrolled in advanced placement algebra and I have been an honor roll student for three years. This knowledge of numbers and diligence qualifies me to have responsibility for finances for our student council." [8] X Research source

Writing the Body of the Speech

• You should list your ideas and then expand on them later in the body. It might take a bit of research to figure out what you want to change. Ask around the school, talking to students and teachers, and see where there's room for improvement. What are the concerns of the students? What are people happy with regarding the school? What would they like to see change? Asking these questions can help you get a sense of your audience and community.
• Remember, you should not make promises you cannot keep. Do not say anything just to get elected. While many students might want gum-chewing policies eliminated or for the lunch period to run twice as long, this is probably not necessary or possible. Try to focus on areas that seem important to keep your school running safely and efficiently. Concerns about things like bullying , academic standards, and extracurricular activities should be your concern over fun and games. [10] X Research source
• A good opening statement for your body would state the causes important to you and what you plan to do about them. For example, if you were running for president, you could say something like, "I understand we need to improve how we handle bullying, increase interest in extracurricular activities, and expand access to AP courses throughout the school. As your president, I would work to bring in speakers to talk about sensitivity in the classroom, increase advertising for basketball games and quiz bowl tournaments, and start a tutoring program to help students struggling with certain subjects." • Using the school library or computers, figure out the best means to tackle certain problems many schools face. How have other schools dealt with bullying? Poor test scores? Low interest in extracurricular activities? What can you reasonably do as a student council member to address these problems? [12] X Research source
• You do not have to have a point-by-point plan laid out, but a few sentences on some preliminary ideas can help you stand out from your peers. People are more inclined to vote for someone who's thought about how to solve problems in addition to identifying problems. [13] X Research source

Ending with a Strong Conclusion

• Do summarize, briefly, your qualifications but do not put the main focus on them. This is where you should sincerely state your passion. Students should not just vote for you because you'd do a good job but because you genuinely care about the school. State your passion for your community and how much you want to see other students succeed. Lots of students have high qualifications. You can set yourself apart by being a candidate who really cares. Promoting Student Leadership on Campus- Creating a Culture of Engagement

Student leadership is the ability of the student body to influence major decisions about its quality of education and learning environment. Influencing major decisions requires a “listening” and a “valuing” and the incorporation of the ideas that students propose.

This article provides a set of principles and ideas on how to incorporate the voices of students in the planning and decision-making processes of educational institutions.

Student Leadership Helps Students Succeed

Educators, families, and communities often focus on new efforts at mutual collaboration, engagement, and accountability but fail to include student perspectives in this dialogue. It is not surprising that students interpret the landscape within schools and colleges as void of opportunities for engaging them as key members of the planning process.

What is needed to complete our picture of engagement is recognition and commitment to support emerging student leadership in the process of improving school holding power and broadening access and success from K-12 through higher education.

Long-term research from the Harvard Assessment Project is revealing that building connections between school and community life contributes to more fulfilled college graduates (Light, 2001). This is a powerful message to people who run schools and colleges (deans, presidents, chancellors, academic vice presidents, principals and faculty) that students who find ways of connecting their curricular and extracurricular activities are the most satisfied.

Another important message is the need to create opportunities that encourage students to engage internally in dialogues about improving institutions and externally in activities within their communities. This can begin in elementary school and continue through high school and into higher education.

Youth and educational institutions must each do their part to ensure effective leadership development. Youth can be more effective in the planning and decision-making processes when they are informed and base their pro-activity on a clear vision of their role and their commitment to a more inclusive and humane world. Youth must exhibit a genuine desire to make a difference in this world. Youth must insist on a strong educational background that prepares them for a demanding and difficult world. Youth must acquire the skills to lead and be effective team players in a more interdependent world.

Educational institutions that are genuine in their desire for student input must make an investment to nurture and enhance the wisdom of their youth. They must provide opportunities for students to become leaders with the skills to advocate inclusiveness and equality that leads to a strong and united country.

Student Leadership Helps Schools Succeed

Emerging student leadership is an invaluable resource to our educational institutions and communities. We should ask ourselves whether we are opting to keep students invisible and quiet on campus or are we advocating their involvement in decision-making and supporting meaningful student leadership.

Students can help us keep the focus clear in our planning by asking the key question regarding any educational environment – is this relevant preparation for my future life?

Yet students are seldom asked to join in the discussion about improving schools and colleges. Students interviewed in some of the current research reported that they are seldom, if ever, consulted about issues, and that time with advisers is too short or non-existent.

Guiding Principles

While there are no cookie-cutter practices that ensure student leadership for all settings, there are some guiding principles that underlie a commitment on the part of educational institutions to support emerging youth leadership and youth engagement with community.

What can schools and campuses do? Below are seven guiding principles and some practices that can create educational environments that foster emerging student leadership and strengthen ties with families and communities.

Schools Must Acknowledge the Role of Family and the Extended Community

For many minority students, especially those who are the first in their families to attend formal schooling or college, the role of family and extended community is vital to student success and leadership development. It is an important source of motivation and achievement because many of these students recognize that their achievement reflects the extended family (Fries-Britt, 2002).

Many Hispanic students and Black students are vitally aware that they are underrepresented in many fields. This can naturally inspire them to do better and to be conscious of the need to be engaged with their communities.

Research shows that family and community involvement are critical for all students. To the extent that parents and families are encouraged to become familiar with and engaged in the activities of campus, they are able to be more effective in their support of leadership development from elementary school through college. Campuses can support and encourage student contacts with their families and extended communities. Likewise, they should encourage participation of family members and community in the activities on campus.

Schools Must Recognize and Value Students for their Contributions

Below are ways schools and colleges can recognize students.

• Begin by establishing relationships with students, student-led campus groups, and youth organizations to invite and listen to student voices.
• Involve students in identifying needs and assessing opportunities for leadership development.
• Offer a diverse menu of opportunities to receive input from youth on a variety of educational issues.
• Formalize the importance of student input through student representation on committees.
• Encourage student participation during the school day as well as after school and on weekends.
• Host meetings during flexible hours to allow for student schedules.
• Publicize the work of students and their ideas as a regular part of school and college newsletters and bulletin boards.
• Offer space to student organizations for performances, art shows, youth leadership symposia and other activities, create local funds to advocate student leadership activities, and invite multi-generational opportunities to talk about leadership from many perspectives that honor and incorporate local leadership, values, culture and diversity.

Schools Must Support Extracurricular Youth Activities in Communities

Young people working in their community, volunteering, or lobbying for support for their organizations learn political skills and valuable lessons about how to move through and with the “system.”

With their peers and with others, they learn to assess their products and their activities, youth come to understand that quality evolves, and they can learn leadership skills about the importance of revision, attention to detail, and pride of individual and group effort (McLaughlin, 2002).

Emerging student leaders learn about the joy of giving back and civic responsibility. Their unique perspectives can energize efforts and bring greater clarity and new dimensions of accountability to planning efforts. Campuses can increase opportunities for students to work with faculty and with other students in problem solving, policy review and planning.

Schools Must Collaborate with Effective Community-Based Organizations Supporting Youth

It is important to consider which community-based organizations or clubs are the most effective partners for schools and colleges in fostering youth leadership. In making your selection, consider that high quality youth organizations are youth-centered and respond to diverse skills, talents and interests of students. They build on strengths and choose appropriate materials and activities that reinforce a positive approach. They reach out to all youth and provide personal attention through focused activities.

Embedded within the organization’s programs are activities that build a range of life skills. The adults within effective youth organizations recognize the many kinds of knowledge and skills youth need to succeed in school and life, and they deliberately try to provide them. Effective community-based organizations focus on building relationships among youth, adults, and the broader community. They are sensitive in honoring the diversity of race, language and culture within the broader community.

Schools and Campuses Must Make Youth a Line Item in the Budget

In order to seek out and underwrite committed individuals and enable their work supporting student leadership, sufficient funds must be in place. Students quickly learn about the support and constraints of their schools and colleges. If this is a priority for a campus, financial support for leadership fostering activities and student groups must be evident in the budget.

Given the current climate of limited funding, students have ineffective voice and claim upon educational resources, and therefore organizations need to make this commitment evident.

Implicit is the erroneous assumption that youth leadership is the responsibility of families and communities rather than educational institutions. Effective campuses recognize that student leadership development is school and community development.

Schools Must Support Student-Led Campus Groups

Many student-led clubs, organizations, and campus groups provide a platform to support emerging student leadership as well as focus on engagement with community. An example is Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan (MEChA).

Recent research by Anthony Antonio (2001) and Daryl Smith et. al (1997) find in reviews of the literature that organizing and supporting student groups with attention to race and ethnicity can have educational benefits.

For example, student organizations that are specifically designed to support students of color appear to contribute to those students’ retention, adjustment, and attachment to their institutions. Schools and colleges can encourage students to use their social support groups as academic support groups and provide counseling and advisors to help foster and fund these activities.

Schools Must Create a Shared Vision of Student Engagement

In order to create an “intentional” environment that supports youth leadership, a shared vision and commitment to do so must first be in place. Leadership and passion often go hand in hand, therefore, the commitment and enthusiasm of everyone, especially key administrators involved, brings essential elements of stability and momentum necessary to sustain campus efforts.

Supporting student leadership needs to be seen as a shared mission to achieve and be held accountable for. To accomplish this, policies and practices need to be in place to support youth leadership. Ongoing assessment of progress toward that mission needs to occur, with adjustments toward that goal made regularly and progress reports to that end shared among all stakeholders, including students.

Thinking and Doing

In his book On Organizational Learning , Chris Argyris speaks to the dichotomy of thinking and doing as theories of beliefs versus action (1999). Basically, students would say that educational institutions need to “walk their talk” – they cannot purport to be about student success and not involve students in the dialogue.

In order to do this, the theories of beliefs can be helpful in closing the gaps between our talk and our action. If we can think out loud in a safe environment, we can begin to understand the scope of how things really work in our educational environments through the eyes and ears of students, and we can take appropriate and effective actions to move toward our desired results.

Through honest dialogue with students, we can know where we are and plan together with them where we want to go in supporting leadership. A positive approach usually follows this pattern:

• Be open and honest to promote healthy exploration of the topic at hand.
• Allow everyone to contribute their best thinking and respect their ideas.
• Continuously check-in to see what is working.
• Create a reward system that values student leadership and shared decision-making.
• Follow through with actions – only make promises you can keep.

As educators, community members and families, we must ask ourselves what support systems our students need to develop leadership for the future. The answer will require many perspectives coming together to move beyond our traditional approaches. Involving students now will help foster the kind of leadership for transformation that is needed, not only for our educational systems, but for our communities and for the world.

Leadership is a virtue that is developed & polished with time. Leaders will always a vision & aim. No one is a born leader, but through struggle, determination & will power a person develops as a leader. Leadership has never been easy. A leader needs to initiate & take a step ahead in work.

The person must have the capacity to motivate people to work in the direction & path under his guidance. A leader is someone who discusses the whole plan in detail with the team & always ready to take the risk for them. Proper guidance from a leader is always the key to success. A leader is always confident about the targets & objectives. We always give respect to the leaders due to their right actions, not for their dictatorship.

A person who is always ordering without knowing the facts can never be a true leader. Proper coordination is always required with the team members. A leader can always be a boss, but all boss are not leaders. A leader is not someone who assigns you work but stands with you in all ups & downs. He/She channelizes the energy in the right direction & thinks in the direction of growth & development of not only the organization but also humanity.

A true leader always works for the betterment of the society & community without expecting anything in return. A leader inspires many lives. They are the ones who are always passionate about the work they do; they are dedicated & focused on achieving the aim. They are filled with positivity & good vibes. One of the essential qualities of a leader is the courage to do things.

We all must have come across some of the leaders in our lives. Let it be in school or the workplace. Some of the finest leaders of Indian history are Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi , APJ Abdul Kalam & many more, who has inspired each & every one of us. A role of a strong leader is essential for the growth of the organization, society, community & for the nation.

A leader who is self-confident, compassionate, good decision maker and intelligent always shows the path for development to his followers. Our country needs more & more strong leaders who can build a strong nation & empower all our thoughts for development.

Good morning to everyone present here. I ……… of class …. Is overwhelmed that I am given this chance to deliver a speech on Leadership. We all must have heard about the great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru & many more, from whom we get to learn a plethora of things. Leadership is a quality which is not god gifted; it is the development of a person with a big heart—a person who is always ready for everything for his followers & stand on frontline to protect them.

Leaders are that person who is always focused & dedicated to their aim. They always have a very defined vision & aim with a strategic plan to achieve. They are ones who always listens to the problems of the team members; they do not keep on ordering things. They motivate people to channelise their energy in the right direction so that the work can be completed with full efficiency.

A leader first thinks about the team before thinking about oneself. They are ever ready to take all types of risk & to provide support to the team. They are selfless & are self-confident. They have very strong moral & principles. Leaders always set new targets for them to check the milestones they have already crossed. What separates a leader from ordinary people is the vision & action plan for the future.

They are the ones who inspire people & lead them in the path of development. A true leader is never biased & always appreciates the efforts of team members. They not only become the part for team in success stories, they even stand with them in the moments of failure, giving them the new hopes for future. I will sum it up here, this all I can say about Leadership in this time slot allotted to me, but the leadership quality is go far beyond this.

Leadership is a crucial aspect of our lives, whether it is in our personal relationships, community, or in the workplace. As students, we have the opportunity to develop and refine our leadership skills, which will serve us well in the future.

Leadership can be defined as the ability to inspire, motivate and guide others towards a common goal. A great leader not only has vision, but also the ability to bring others along on the journey towards that vision. Examples of Great Leader

In today's world, there are countless examples of great leaders who have changed the course of history and inspired millions with their vision, commitment, and unwavering spirit. Two such leaders who stand out are Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

Mahatma Gandhi was a man who embodied the very essence of leadership. He was a man who inspired millions with his unwavering commitment to non-violent resistance and his vision of a free and equal India. Despite facing immense opposition and making personal sacrifices, Gandhi never lost sight of his goal. He rallied his followers around his cause and through his leadership, he brought about a change in the world that will be remembered for generations to come.

Nelson Mandela is another example of a great leader who has made a lasting impact on the world. He spent 27 years in prison in his fight against apartheid in South Africa and was subjected to the worst forms of oppression. Yet, he never lost his faith in the power of leadership to bring about change. His unwavering spirit and refusal to compromise on his principles inspired millions around the world and eventually led to the fall of apartheid and his election as the first black president of South Africa.

Both Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela serve as a reminder that true leadership is not about power, fame or wealth, but about the ability to inspire others, to stand up for what is right, and to never lose sight of your goals, no matter the cost. Investment Banker

An Investment Banking career involves the invention and generation of capital for other organizations, governments, and other entities. Good Morning Gentleman and Ladies – I hope you get in the best spirits today!

I warmly welcome all of you to today’s lecture on the topic of leadership. I, Vaishali Rawat, your host today, will address this issue. Leadership is a term, and I can relate to it because I hold the position of a senior manager in my current company. If given a chance, everyone wants to lead it and follow it. But does anyone realize how difficult this task is and what roles and responsibilities come with it?

First of all, please appreciate that there is no dominance or subordinate leadership of weak sex. The world is already full of people who have a strong desire to rule and are responsible for the lives of others. But that is not the characteristic of a good leader.

A true leader is one who earns respect through his proper actions and collective gathering without his rules. He encourages others to adhere to in his footsteps and be a guide to humanity. The great leader is carrying the torch of knowledge and enlightening the society and leading the people on the path of progress and development.

Further, leadership is the true meaning, and people should be able to see you chasing them without force. Leaders set specific benchmarks and try to achieve the milestones that people set according to their actions and efforts. Goals are set to achieve those goals, but without compromising morality and morality – this is the true mark of a great leader.

Leaders who possess exceptional leadership qualities effectively channel their energy and devote themselves to the development and advancement of humanity. He allows himself/herself to impose sanctions or liabilities against all the odds and never succumb to the circumstances. Always remember that the love of the Supreme Excellence lies in the great leader. In this way, a true leader can establish a relationship with the Almighty, and he/she is the only instrument in his hand and inspiration and guide to the higher senses to dedicate whole life like people’s ambitions.

In the real essence of the word, the leader must pay heed to his predecessors and moral limitations. He selflessly does well for the community, that is, without expecting anything in return. It also enhances or cleanses his / her soul and monitors his desires, which allows him to become an extraordinary person.

Another aspect of leadership involves compelling and inspiring leadership qualities. There are also different references to leadership, e.g., leading person, another person, leading group, leading organization.

Some of the conditions that are often associated with being an effective leader include intelligence, high power, confidence, superiority, and practice. A practical, charismatic leader should lead by example. The leader must know what is going on, what task or tasks are being accomplished, and the group should be able to take the lead in successfully carrying out that task.

There are many different theories of leadership. The leader’s contingency theory is the leadership situation theory and the house’s path-goal theory. These principles are used to make a person or manager a more effective leader. They can be used as guidance for individuals and help them achieve the goals set by their organization or group.

There is an old saying, “To be in the first place, to be first in the merits.” In this way, a person becomes a leader when they can lead humanity on the path of progress — any selfish reason.

It is a common practice to give the students a little idea about giving speeches as early as primary school. Part of the reason is that these are the foundational years and form as a stepping stone for the students to get a little more used to public speaking as they move to higher classes .

A couple of ways students in primary schools may be asked to give speeches would be to introduce themselves or at competitions like fancy dress competitions.

Speeches could be framed around a popular or controversial issue that the student wishes to provide their insight into. This would encourage them to come up with solutions. Classroom/section speeches

Classroom or section speeches are the ones you give in front of your classmates or people from your age group. Generally, the presentation of assignments and competitions comes under this category.

Graduation Speech

Students may also be expected to present a graduation speech . However, the big difference here is that not everyone gets the opportunity to present a graduation speech or commencement address as it is known.

When I came across this tip, I was surprised too. Because is indeed true that we write very differently when we have to show the speech to someone in written form but if asked honestly, do we speak in such a highly polished, extra professional vocabulary?

The idea is not to write the speech or speech opening riddled with slang but rather in a way that you’d feel comfortable listening to and understanding easily had you been the listener.

So in short, prepare the speech with the listener in mind, not the reader .

Most opening lines for speech in school begin with a good morning.  We usually follow it with greetings or addressing the audience and the guests.

This happens to be a personal favorite of mine when it comes to speech openings for students. A very simple yet beautiful way to engage your audience right at the beginning of your speech while at the same time allowing them to relate to what you’ll be saying next is what the image” scenarios are all about.

Before we begin, I’d like you to take a moment and imagine walking through a trail. You see the lush greens and pretty sky above you, the most dynamic clouds following everyone you go. Try sniffing the smell of wet soil and a hint of flowery fragrance as you walk towards the edge of the hill expecting to take a glimpse of the utter beauty that these hours of walking would lead you to, but you find something else. You see something that sends chills down your spine. There are some strange men performing rituals right in the very heart of these dense greens. You wonder what it is all about until it hits you; you have just uncovered a cult.

For the next example, I’d like you to take a look at the video below and check for yourself how wonderfully the speaker (although not a student) has made use of the “imagine” scenario to share his tragic experience with his audience.

Imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. Imagine a plane full of smoke. Imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack. It sounds scary. Well I had a unique seat that day. I was sitting in 1D.

3. “What If” Scenario

What if I told you that the best speech openings for students are actually the ones wherein they come up with an opening that best represents their style and comfort at delivering speeches, be it with a joke or a story?

Do you see what I did there?

That is an example of a “what if” scenario. It is similar to the imagination scenario we discussed above but the only difference here is that “what if” speech openings for students focus on providing an alternative idea to the audience while the imagined scenarios provide the audience an opportunity to relate to the speaker.

4. Rhetorical question

Rhetorical questions are questions the speaker includes in his/her/their speech that doesn’t necessarily require the audience to come up with an answer but are posed to get the audience thinking on the same.

Using rhetorical questions as speech openings for students can work wonders especially when you are looking for either a very quick speech opening or have very little time to deliver the speech.

6. Statistics and figures

Show the numbers, the figures, and any statistics that serve your purpose for giving the speech.

It is very common to overlook the seriousness of any situation when you aren’t aware of the real extent of its seriousness. But when we have numbers in front of us, there is no more room for being in denial.

How to start a speech for the student council.

Speeches for student council are usually persuasive. They are your pitch to convince your fellow students to vote for you and help you get the position you are looking for.

So ideally, you should start by addressing everyone in the room . Then make a point to introduce yourself. Once you have introduced yourself, remind the audience why you are speaking which means let them know the position you are campaigning for. In the words of John C Maxwell, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

Leaders are the people that make the difference between success and failure. A leader is someone who has a futuristic vision and can turn his ideas into success stories. But who is a leader? What are the qualities that a good leader possess?

Once Dwight.D.Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, said: “The supreme quality of leadership is unquestionably integrity.” He believed that no real success is not possible, anywhere without this quality. A good leader will always be honest and will have integrity. That makes their followers honest as well. When leaders stick to their values and core beliefs, they succeed and that is not possible without ethics.

Others won’t follow your command if you are not confident. If you are unsure about your choices and decisions, if you are not confident enough by them, your followers will doubt you. A good leader is assertive but not overconfident.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” John Quincy Adams said that. This is the most difficult quality to be found in leaders. A good leader must always set a good example. Your positive approach must be seen in your actions.

If you want your team to give their all and look up to you, you have to do that too. They will do as you do. When they slack off, fill them with passion and energy. If the leader is committed to the cause, so will be the team. And communication plays a vital role in this. So, it is safe to say that a good leader must be able to communicate clearly and efficiently. If you can’t convey your dreams, visions, and hopes to your team, they will never feel the purpose behind your words. Words are powerful. They can motivate people as nothing else can.

A good leader must be able to make the right decisions even in the most confusing and difficult time. And you must stand by the decisions you have made. A wise person once said that a leader has to take the blame more than his fair share and receive less credit than he is liable for. A leader is accountable for the entire team but it’s also the job of the leader to make sure that everyone in the team is accountable for each of their jobs. If they do a good job, appreciate them. If they make a mistake, help them realize it and work with the team to improve their performance.

A leader is not the one who does all the work himself. Leaders should be able to concentrate on their main responsibilities. For the rest of the work, he should be able to delegate. Micromanaging everything your team does will create a lack of trust. Empower them a little to help them perform the tasks and you will have a strong team behind you.

A clear difference between a leader and a follower is innovation. A good leader is creative and innovative and empathizes with those who follow. Empathy closely connects the leader to the team. A good leader must have all these qualities to set a good example to others and leave a mark on the world of leadership.

Good Morning Ladies and Gentleman – I hope this day finds you in the best of spirits!

I warmly welcome you all here in today’s speech ceremony on the subject called Leadership. I, Vaishali Rawat, your host for today, will address this topic. Leadership is quite a word in itself and I can very much relate with it because I am myself holding a position of senior manager in my present company. If given a chance, everyone would want to lead and be followed. But has anyone ever realized how difficult this task is and what roles and responsibilities come with it?

First of all, please understand that leadership doesn’t involve domination or subjugation of the weaker sex. The world is already full with such people who have an ardent desire to rule and take charge of other peoples’ lives. But this is not the trait of a good leader.

The true leader is someone who earns respect through his rightful actions and mass following without any dictatorship. He inspires others to follow his footsteps and become the guiding light for the humanity. The great leader is someone who carries the torch of wisdom and enlightens the society thereby leading people to the path of progress and growth. Besides, the true meaning of leadership is having the requisite ability to enable people want to follow you while being under no compulsion as such to do so. Leaders are those people who set certain benchmarks and try to achieve those benchmarks by allowing people to judge them according to their actions and endeavors. The goals are set and all might is put towards achieving those goals, but without compromising with the ethics and morals – this is the true mark of a great leader.

Leaders who possess great leadership qualities effectively channelize their energy and devote themselves for the growth and progress of humanity. The restrictions or obligations that he/she imposes on himself/herself enable him/her to rise against all odds and never bow down to the circumstances. Always remember that the love of supreme excellence is found in a great leader. Thus, a true leader is someone who is able to establish a connection with the almighty and realizes by faith that he/she is a mere instrument in the hands of Him and dedicates his entire life to become an inspirer and guide of the higher sentiments and ambitions of the people.

He/she who is a leader in the true sense of the term has to pay the price for his forbearance and moral restraints. He/she does good to the society selflessly, i.e. without expecting anything in return. This leads to further enhancement or cleansing of his/her soul and keeping a check on his/her personal desires, which in turn allows him/her to become an extraordinary being.

There is an old-saying which is, “To be first in place, one must be first in merit as well.” Thus, an individual actually becomes a leader when he/she has the ability to lead mankind on the path of progress without any selfish reason.

Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Students – Warm Greetings to all of you!

I heartily welcome everyone to our school auditorium. Before we begin with our annual celebration, I – Sakshi Juneja from Class-XII (A), would like to deliver a short speech on Leadership. You all must be wondering why I have chosen this topic and not any other topic related to patriotism or present scenario. As everyone knows that it is due to the sacrifice of our great freedom fighters that India won back its independence. But does anyone of us realize that besides being incredible freedom fighters they were also great leaders who had the power to lead the world through the power of their words.

Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Shaheed Bhagat Singh and many others led the nation through their influential words and soul stirring speeches. This leadership quality was much needed without which they wouldn’t have gathered mass support and won back India’s freedom. So what qualities are needed to become a great leader? What leadership actually entails? These are the questions that you must be wrestling with in order to know the answers.

So let me tell you that leaders are those who are great orators having the aptitude to share their vision with the people around and having the convincing ability. Leaders should be driven by a cause and dedicate their lives for the good of their motherland as well as their countrymen. They should be passionate about what they do and dedicated to accomplishing their aim in life, i.e. to lead the world for a good cause. A great leader is also a great teacher, who works towards empowering others, can take risks and is able to develop the requisite set of skills.

If I talk from the standpoint of a student, I would say that our role model and leader are our teachers who unfailingly impart good thoughts to us and motivate us to become a responsible individual. They patiently deal with all the students and foster positive attitude in us so that we grow up as conscientious and compassionate being.

There is an age-old myth that leadership quality is associated with militancy or dictatorship. But a leader is that individual who can lead the way and become a torch bearer for the masses to follow the direction shown by him or her. Leaders have an inherent charisma which is magnetic for other people to behold; this is the reason why people come under their sway. Great leadership qualities are very much required in the present times by various multi-national organizations. The position of leaders varies from middle managers to senior-level executives.

There are different facets to a great leader for he/she not only leads himself/herself, but people around, chief groups and chief organizations. Following are the qualities associated with a great leader, i.e. he/should be a great leader, quick witted, intelligent, self-confident and compassionate. Our country thus needs more and more such leaders who can build a stronger nation and empower it with the ennobling thoughts.

Leadership Speech – 3

Good Morning to one and all! Warm Welcome to the commemoration ceremony of our great Indian Leader, i.e. Mahatma Gandhi who took the world by storm through his morals and principles. As he held a high regard among the people of his country, he therefore earned the sobriquet of Bapu and is called so even today. His non-violent principles brought a great revolutionary change in our country and he with the support of his countrymen and other freedom fighters won back his country’s freedom.

Therefore considering his great leadership qualities, I want to deliver a speech on the subject called leadership and wish that many more such people continue to take birth in our country so that it can grow by leaps and bounds not only in terms of wealth, but morally and spiritually as well. What sets great leaders apart from the common men is the quality that they are born with a vision and can foresee the future. They are clear in their mind as towards which direction they have to head and what they want from life. They are expert at preparing strategies and changing those strategies from time to time according to what the time requires.

Having a vision for future is what separates the leaders from a common man and categorizes them as special type of people. Such people thus become transformational leaders. Well, managers also come into the category of leaders who not only manage their desk work, but lead their teams as well. However, still there is a difference between a manager and a leader, which is, managers are just concerned about getting their work done whereas leaders take into account the emotions of their people and act accordingly.

Following are the qualities required to become a great leader:

One of the really significant qualities of a good leader is of course courage. Being courageous means he/she has the guts to take risks in life without having assurance of positive outcome. Because life itself is precarious, every action that we perform or every commitment we make definitely cannot be without a risk factor. Therefore, courage is the most identifiable trait in a leader because not everyone has the courage to follow his/her dreams.

Those who are true leaders always have their penetrating gaze on the possible outcome and are able to anticipate the situation. It is, therefore, the much needed attribute in a great leader because if he/she isn’t focused, any foundation governed by him/her can come crashing down in no time. Thus, they have to focus on their goals as well as the organizational goals, if they work in that kind of a space.

• Strategic Planning

Great leaders are also great masterminds. They can do strategic planning and look ahead to fathom the upcoming trends beforehand and make an adjustment of his organization according to the changing industry tastes and preferences. They are born with the ability to foresee future events much earlier than their competitors.

This is all I can say in this brief time period, but the qualities of a leader go far beyond that, which make him/her standout from the crowd and become a source of inspiration for the people.

Good Morning Friends – Hope you are doing well!

Welcome to this yet another session of the grooming classes. As you all know that the reason why your company is putting you through these grooming classes is to help you enhance your skills set and develop leadership qualities which will help you in the long run.

But you must be pondering over the fact that why you need to develop leadership qualities. Well, its answer is very simple! You do not work in isolation, do you? If not, then you would gradually go up in the ladder of this industrial sector. So as you will go higher, you will be responsible not only for your work, but also for the people working under you. Being responsible for your work is one thing, but being responsible for the work of a group of people is something else and trust me it’s not an easy job.

A great leader is someone who can inspire and lead others. He/she doesn’t have to necessarily force anyone, but his/her influence on people should be so profound that they start following him/her willingly. For this to happen, he/she should have great oratory skills and should be able to move people through the power of his/her words. He/she doesn’t have to rule over anyone but his/her personality should be so strong that people easily get swayed by his/her aura. It is true that these qualities are god gifted to a certain extent in a select few people, but after a point one has to constantly work over it.

Let’s know, what are those leadership qualities which help a person stand out from rest of the crowd and make a mark in this world:

Great leaders are not only strong-headed and decisive, but also modest. Being modest doesn’t mean that he/she is uncertain of himself or herself or has a weak character, but it means that he/she has enough self-confidence that he/she can easily realize the value of others and give them the importance they deserve. This is one of the rare characteristics in a person or a great leader because it certainly requires suppression of one’s ego.

The crux of integrity is honesty. Integrity expects you to remain truthful towards your people under every circumstance. It is the founding quality which is required in any leader and for any working sphere.

• Cooperation

It’s a great leadership quality to make everyone work in harmony under one roof. If you are able to pull people together for a cause or project, then success is bound to touch your feet. This quality is of paramount importance in a leader because being a leader itself entails making people to follow you readily and for a substantial cause.

You should have penetrating eyes to actually understand who all are the people worth taking along and can effectively contribute towards the cause or smooth functioning of your organization.

Therefore, you all are made a part of these grooming classes so that you can also make the most of this opportunity and hone your skills for a higher level. This is all I have to say.

A leader can make or break all of your future dreams. So, it is very vital to choose a leader very wisely. But then a question arises in the mind; how to identify a good leader who can actually help us to lead ahead in life?

Well, there are some common personality traits of a good leader which can help in finding a good leader. First , good observation skill is one of the features of great leaders, they observe well before making a decision.

Second , they are action-takers, they do not waste their time on unnecessary activities. Third , they are good communicators. They have a great deal of sense of how to present views in a positive way. This quality enables them to influence and persuade each kind of person.

Fourth , Flexibility is another great quality of great leaders. They change strategies whenever they feel the need. So, pay close attention to who is leading you. Thank you!

An elevator speech is a short and simple pitch for an idea.  The goal with an elevator speech is to grab a listener’s attention and convert that attention into action—all in a very short period of time.  In this post, we’ll talk about how preparing your elevator speech can be a useful exercise for your organization, too: the faster and more succinct you and your teammates are at explaining, say, your organization’s mission, or the goals of a particular campaign, the more consistent your group’s understanding of itself will be.  Therefore, an elevator speech can serve two purposes.  It’s good to have ready when you need it, so you can draw others in whenever the moment is right.  But an elevator speech is also useful for defining who you are as an organization and sharing that with others quickly.

Hint: It’s Not Just for Elevators.

Let’s be honest.  The chances of using an elevator speech in an actual elevator aren’t very high.  So where would an elevator speech come in handy on your campus?  If you’re trying to spread the word about your organization or a new project, then you can use an elevator speech at involvement fairs and promotional tables to attract new members.  If you’re trying to secure support for a campaign, then you could use an elevator speech with your friends, roommates, classmates, and others whose support is important.  And then there are always those unplanned run-ins with influential people, like when you bump into your university’s president at the gym (it happens!).

Crafting the Elevator Speech

Making an elevator speech is an activity you should collaborate on with your team members.  As we’ve said before, the more feedback you can get from one another, the better.  It’s also important that you are all saying something similar, since nothing is worse for a campaign or club than conflicting messages.  Use some brainstorming activities to get the conversation started.  Settle on a specific set of priorities for the speech.  As you go along, test your speech out on each other.  Make sure that, by the end, every member of your group can pull the speech off.

Let’s also be honest about something else.  There doesn’t exist any single formula for an elevator speech.  A generic elevator speech will quickly fail as you struggle to adapt it to all kinds of situations.

Instead, there are three things to consider that are universal to any elevator speech you put together: your audience, your project, and your outline.

1. Your audience

Who is your audience and what do they care about?  As an example, how will you grab the attention of these two different people?

• A stranger rushing through the student center to lunch
• Somebody you’ve identified as a potential power-broker

Different audiences will respond to different openings.  Put yourself in the audience’s shoes, and consider what they care to hear about.  It may be difficult, but you need to decide how to directly target each person you share your elevator speech with.

2. Your project

Start with what is unique about your organization or project.  What specific issues does it address?  What sets it apart from similar endeavors on your campus?  Use language that makes your distinctions clear.

• “We are the first…”
• “We are the only…”
• “We are the highest-rated…”
•  “We are the longest-lasting…”

Are there any particular accomplishments you can point to?  What challenges have you overcome?  What are your achievements?  Again, specifics matter.  Go back to your SMART goals and incorporate specific details.  For instance, what measurable actions have you completed?

Finally, why are you interested in this audience member?  What are some specific ways they can help your organization or project?

3. Your outline

Remember, this isn’t a script.  Your outline consists of several bullet points that will help guide your speech.

• An introduction of your organization or project
• The issue your organization or project addresses
• Your past accomplishments and your next steps
• How this affects or relates to your listener
• What you expect your listener to do with this information

Perfecting the Elevator Speech

An elevator speech is a form of public speaking, and so all the usual rules apply.  Pay close attention to:

• Your time—try to keep it under 30 seconds!
• Your enunciation, or that you’re speaking clearly and not mumbling or talking too fast
• Your body language

Also pay attention to the reactions, chiefly the body language, of your listener.  If they look bored or in a rush, adjust your elevator speech accordingly.

Student Leadership Council

The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is composed of current high school student members of the National Speech & Debate Association who provide feedback and recommendations throughout the year to ensure we are meeting students’ needs.

Council members have a variety of ways to be involved in the organization’s operations, including:

• Providing feedback on NSDA programs, offerings, and initiatives from the student perspective to drive improvements. 
• Consulting on the organization’s execution of its mission and vision as it relates to students.
• Helping to create NSDA resources for students.
• Writing for Rostrum magazine.
• Creating content for NSDA social media.

It is not necessary for students to have experience or interest in every area; we welcome applicants with a strong interest in a single area. Please consider recommending students who have skills or interest in one or more of the following: 

• Have a passion for shaping the NSDA’s future
• Enjoy leading team practices, peer coaching, or developing resources for your program
• Value collaborating with diverse groups of people
• Have strong writing skills 
• Excel in creative problem solving
• Have familiarity with social networking platforms 

2024-2025 SLC Selection Process

High school students who will graduate in 2025, 2026, or 2027 are eligible for nomination. Coaches may submit nominations by February 15 through a standard online form , which sends a copy to both the national office and the district chair, if applicable. Each district has the opportunity to nominate one member student for consideration. District winners must be reported by the district chair by March 1. Each country or U.S. territory also has the opportunity to nominate one student. An NSDA committee will review international applications to select one nominee from each participating country or territory. International nominations are also due by February 15.

District and international nominees who are finalists for the SLC will be emailed and asked to submit a short video by the end of March explaining why they’d like to be part of the SLC and how they envision contributing in their own words. The final SLC will be selected in April. Students can expect to commit to three to five hours per month for the council. 

This is a unique way to influence the organization’s future and an excellent addition to any student’s resume. If you know a student passionate about improving speech and debate, please tell them about this program!

Sam Chen is a senior at Boston Latin School in Massachusetts. He competes in Public Forum, Congressional Debate, and Worlds Schools Debate, qualifying three times to NSDA Nationals, two times to the Gold TOC, and two times to NCFLs. Notable achievements include going undefeated in prelims at the 2023 National Tournament, advancing to quarterfinals at NCFLs, and obtaining top speaker at the Milo Cup. He also has instructed at seven different debate camps, helped host national and international tournaments, and created Outreach Debate to connect debaters globally. Outside of debate, he volunteers with Encode Justice and Closing the Divide, two organizations that address issues within technology and AI. He loves writing, basketball, and running.

Claire Curran

Claire has been involved in speech and debate since the sixth grade and currently serves as president of her school’s team. In competition, Claire has seen success across numerous events, including three appearances in Indiana state finals in U.S. Extemp (2021 champion, 2022 and 2023 second runner-up) along with being a two-time state finalist in Lincoln-Douglas (2023 champion). Outside of her school team, Claire reached the final round at the 2023 NSDA National Tournament in World Schools Debate with her district team, coming in second overall and placing sixth as an individual speaker. She has had the privilege of being a team member of the 2022-2023 USA Debate Development Team and is now serving as one of 12 students representing her country on the 2023-2024 USA Debate team. Outside of speech and debate. Claire works closely with numerous youth advocacy groups to provide programming for youth wishing to get involved with their state legislature. As the Director of Youth Advocacy for Shelly’s Voice, a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ Hoosiers, Claire has worked closely with partners at Indiana Youth Group, the ACLU, and IndyPride to provide meaningful support to LGBTQ+ youth in Indiana. In her freetime, Claire can be found explaining figure skating controversy to her friends, driving a carpool, or exploring Indiana’s vibrant local restaurant scene. She could not be more grateful for this opportunity to give back to the NSDA and is thrilled to start her year with the inaugural SLC!

Gabby Garner

Gabrielle (Gabby) Garner is a senior at Petal High School in Petal, Mississippi. She started participating in speech and debate during the summer of her fifth grade year, and competed in her first middle school Nationals in 2017 in Birmingham, Alabama. Throughout her years in speech and debate, she has competed in the following events: Original Oratory, Public Forum Debate, Duo, Duet, Storytelling, Prose, Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation, Expository, Original Spoken Word, Big Questions, Declamation, and Congressional Debate. However, her favorites are Duo and Congressional Debate. Outside of speech and debate, she enjoys working with her school’s theater program, doing community work within her church, and spending time with her family and friends. She is incredibly excited to work with the NSDA’s SLC and hopes to serve the speech and debate community as best as she can.

Solomon Goluboff-Schragger

Solomon has been competing in Public Forum Debate for eight years. He and his partner are three-time qualifiers for the Virginia High School League State Championships and the 2022 VHSL state champions. They also won the 2023 Shenandoah Valley Forensics League Championship and have placed in multiple national circuit tournaments. Solomon has been a captain of the Charlottesville High School debate team for three years and is passionate about local and state funding for debate. As the captain of an underfunded program, Solomon has fought hard to gain the resources to have a functioning and inclusive team. He is super excited to be on the inaugural Student Leadership Council and can’t wait to share his love for speech and debate in any way he can. Besides debate, Solomon enjoys making movies, taking photos, carving out linocut prints, and adventuring around Central Virginia with his friends.

Maxwell Harrison is a junior in high school in Oklahoma. He has been doing speech and debate for three years now and loves to compete in Original Oratory. Others in his family are in the speech and debate community, and Max is thrilled to help contribute to this community by being on the Student Leadership Council. In his free time, Max enjoys other arts—digital illustrations and creative writing. Maxwell hopes to contribute these skills (and more) to the SLC this year!

Dariel Herrera

Dariel has been involved in Speech for four years. He primarily competes in Duo Interpretation as well as Original Oratory. Notably, he won a state championship in Duo Interp, and in the same year was a semifinalist at the 2023 National Tournament in Phoenix/Mesa, Arizona. He is now a three-time national qualifier. Back at his own school, Dariel serves as the Class of 2025 president as well as treasurer for his school’s YFA (Young Feminist and Allies) Club. Additionally, he is a member of the National Honor Society and serves on the Executive Council of his school’s speech and debate team. He wishes to share his love of performing and public speaking with others and encourage them to use their voices to create change.

Nora will take any excuse to be on stage. Whether singing, acting, dancing, professing her love of American History, or winning a trophy, she craves to be in front of a crowd. She is so excited to be on the brand new stage of the NSDA’s Student Leadership Council, and even more honored to represent the wonderful state of Colorado. Nora spends most of her time in the world of Congressional Debate, where she is a Colorado state finalist, the captain of her school’s Congress team, and fights the Colorado point leaderboard every weekend. She has had amazing experiences and opportunities around Colorado and even at the Harvard Debate Summer Workshop in Cambridge this past summer. This year, she will explore Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, and Drama, but will continue intensely with Congressional Debate on the local circuit and national circuit. Outside of debate, Nora excels in music and theater. A total music theory nerd, she has played the piano for three years, viola for four, and the violin for more than 12 years. Nora is a proud member of her school’s top chambers singers and accomplished theater ensemble, with a two-time state championship in improvisational theater. She’s also an officer in the Thespian Honors Society (Troupe 5996) and starts her school’s first ever English Honors Society as president this year. Nora is also a member of the Colorado Youth Congress where she extends her love for advocacy and community service to work on state-wide projects with leaders across Colorado. She is an active volunteer in her community, and particularly loves volunteering and learning about dinosaur fossils at the notorious Denver Museum of Nature and Science. In her free time, Nora enjoys music theory, politics, instagramming, singing tags with friends, and most importantly, having new adventures every day with her family and friends.

Aaimah has competed in speech for four years. This is Aaimah’s second year being a captain on the speech team, competing in Impromptu and United States Extemporaneous Speaking. Aaimah has gotten the privilege to attend NSDA Nationals twice, and in 2023 made the national final stage in Impromptu. Aaimah hopes to make speech a more accessible activity for all so that more and more students can amplify their voices. Aaimah’s favorite part about speech as an activity is the friendships they have made and the leadership skills they have gained.

As the child of a debate coach, Taite likes to say they began their debate career at the age of six, being raised at local tournaments by the Washington State debate community. As a freshman, competing for Mount Vernon High School, they won top speaker in Policy Debate at the WA State Debate Championships. Last season, as a sophomore, they placed second in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, second in Impromptu, and first in Extemp at the state championships. Their Worlds career began as a freshman when they attended NSDA Nationals with Team Puget Sound. Additionally, last season, they were a proud member of the Team USA Developmental Team and happily joined Team USA this season. When not with their extended debate family, Taite also participates in the National Honor Society, Key Club, Skagit Teen Court, and even tried softball last year, resulting in just one black eye. In their free time, Taite loves creating playlists of his favorite 80s music, reading Ray Bradbury short stories, and eating Denny’s with the debate team. Taite believes that everyone deserves access to the benefits of speech and debate. They are very excited to be a member of the SLC!

Meherika Majumdar

Hi, my name is Meherika Majumdar I’m a senior and this my fourth year in debate. I primarily compete in public forum, but I have also done other non-NSDA public speaking events like mock trial and MUN. I have won domestic PF tournaments in Vietnam 3 times so far with an equivalent number of runner’s up. I have also represented Vietnam at Nationals in the 2020-21 season, as wells represented Vietnam at the Digital Speech and Debate e-Championship last year. At my school, I am one of the vice-presidents of our debate program. In my role, I have worked with my peers to expand the PF community around Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and also to other countries in South East Asia, like Singapore. I am super excited to represent the international community in this council and I can’t wait to see what we get done this school year!

Numa Mujeeb

Numa has been involved in speech and debate all four years of high school, competing in Declamation and possibly double entering this year. She has qualified for state and national tournaments, breaking into quarterfinals her sophomore year at states. She is captain of her speech and debate team, focusing on coaching novices, middle schoolers, and anyone who seeks help. She also runs her school’s speech and debate Instagram, allowing people to see just how fun this activity is—taking viewers through a typical Saturday at a tournament, recognizing her teammates who perform exceptionally at tournaments, and promoting upcoming team events are just a few of the things that are posted to the team’s account. In addition, Numa helps plan events for her team. They have “Speech and Sweets” at the end of every season where they send off their seniors, recognize other teammates, and enjoy yummy desserts with a few performances. Apart from speech and debate, she is on the varsity tennis team, plays the flute, and aids in community food banks. Numa enjoys traveling to India every year to visit her family, baking, and eating out with her friends and family, trying new restaurants. She is so grateful to be a part of the SLC, facilitating change in the speech and debate community.

Nicholas Ostheimer

Nicholas Ostheimer Bio

Nicholas has served as president of his debate team for five years and been involved in speech and debate since sixth grade. He founded his school’s high school speech and debate team his freshman year and has helped lead it to achieving NSDA charter chapter status. Nicholas competes in Congressional Debate and World Schools Debate. He was a finalist in the 2023 UK TOC and a 2023 NSDA national finalist in Congressional Debate – House. He is currently ranked #1 in the country in Congressional Debate by NSDA points. His accomplishments in World Schools include winning first speaker at the 2022 Malaysia ISDC, championing the 2023 Malaysia ISDC, and making semifinals at the 2023 Zimbabwe ISDC. Nicholas is also the founder and director of Equality in Forensics, a nationwide student-run nonprofit organization dedicated to making speech and debate more accessible through free resources and events.

Springfield Catholic High School, MO

John Otto Bio

John is a senior at Springfield Catholic High School with a passion for debate. Over the last five years, he has competed in Lincoln- Douglas, Congress, and Public Forum. His dedication has earned him a national ranking in the top 15 in Extemporaneous Debate and a spot as a national congressional semifinalist. Currently, John serves as a student representative for the Ozark District, developing social media strategies and spearheading outreach initiatives for one of the largest districts in the nation. In addition to leading his school’s debate team, John is president of Springfield Catholic DECA, a business and entrepreneurship club. His passion for business strategy is highlighted by his multiple state championships and a third place finish at the international level for his start-up business plan. Outside of competition, John is the founder of Legislate, an app designed to streamline Congressional Debate. Whether traveling, building websites for nonprofits, or binging the latest season of “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,”  his dedication and determination are limitless. John looks forward to an incredible year with the SLC.

Esther Oyetunji

Esther is in her fourth year in speech and debate, competing in several categories including Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, and Program Oral Interpretation. As a member of the American Heritage speech team, she has championed various tournaments ranging from Florida Varsity State, The Barkley Forum at Emory University, and Harvard University’s International Tournament. Most notably, she is a two-time, back-to-back NSDA national champion in Original Oratory. Outside of speech, you’ll find Esther being a leader in the Black Student Union, First Priority, and National Honor Society. Esther is so excited to give back to a community that has given her so much and can’t wait to see what the Student Leadership Council will do!

Isabella Palacio

Isabella Palacio Bio

Isabella Palacio has been involved in speech and debate for six years. She has primarily competed in Impromptu Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Congressional Debate and has experience in Extemporaneous Speaking as well as World Schools Debate. She currently serves as the outreach director and speech captain of her high school’s team and is a five-time national qualifier. Some of her largest accomplishments include ranking 14th at the National Tournament for Congressional Debate in sixth grade and competing at Harvard and Bradley Invitational as a middle schooler. Outside of speech and debate, Isabella is a huge advocate for DEI and social justice initiatives within her community. She was one of six students from her school selected to attend the National Student Diversity Leadership Conference, where she applied the knowledge she gained to her school through various presentations as co-chair of the multicultural education leadership group. Additionally, she serves on the leadership board of GEMfest, which is an organization at her school that plans events for middle school girls to network, learn from female leaders across the U.S., and feel more empowered in their goals. She is vice president of her school’s Girl Up Chapter and is a Youth Congressional Leader in her district. In her free time, she loves hanging out with her friends and family, going to dance, and practicing her Spanish.

Ladue Horton Watkins High School, MO

Bohan Pan Bio

Bohan Pan has been a member of the Ladue Horton Watkins High School team debate since her freshman year. Though she mainly participates in Public Forum, she’s competed in a litany of additional events, from Informative Speaking to Congressional Debate. In the 2022-2023 debate season, she won the Missouri State championship in Public Forum and was an octafinalist and top seed at the NCFL Grand Nationals, her first time competing nationally. At school, she’s a co-captain of the Public Forum team and is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and Model United Nations. Moreover, she works with middle schoolers all across the city to further the area’s middle school speech and debate program, which has been on hiatus for several years. In the St. Louis region, Bohan is the founder of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers classes and educational events as a means to provide learning resources for underfunded schools in St. Louis and beyond. In her free time, Bohan enjoys performing with her Duet partner, sparkling water, and Hozier.

Anish has been involved in speech and debate since the seventh grade, competing in numerous events including Public Forum, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Congressional Debate until settling upon the event he wanted to do for the rest of his high school career: Lincoln-Douglas Debate. In LD, he has qualified to Nationals every year he has competed, advanced to quarterfinals at JV Yale and Laird Lewis, advanced to semifinals at the TFL NC state tournament, and co-championed the 2023 NC West district tournament. Anish is the captain of his school’s LD program and takes part in the recruitment of new LD debaters. Outside of debate, Anish is a star rank Boy Scout, president of his school’s class of 2025, and an avid player of Super Smash Brothers. Additionally, he writes for a news outlet that he has created called The Politalk. This news outlet has a website, podcast, and YouTube channel. In his free time, you can find Anish playing video games with his brother, volunteering at his local food bank, producing content for his news outlet, and running long distance for his school’s track and cross country team.

Gabriel Torres

Gabriel can be best described as considerate, concentrated, and off-puttingly caustic. He currently serves as team president for the Clear Brook High School debate team and competes in World Schools Debate. Having started debate his freshman year, Gabriel considers his role on the Student Leadership Council an important opportunity to give back to the speech and debate community through meaningful advocacy. Other speech activities include being a speaker in the 2023 TEDxClearBrookHighSchool program, during which he delivered a talk about the appropriation of Mexican cultures in the U.S. and the ongoing commodification of Frida Kahlo’s art. Beyond debate, Gabriel serves as editor-in-chief for his school’s Literary Magazine (which he founded in 2022), as well as being president of the Model UN team, Rho Kappa (which he also founded), Eco Club, and the STEM-based volunteer organization CORES. After school, Gabriel can usually be found at the bowling alley, an activity which he does recreationally through his school’s varsity bowling team as well as semi-professionally, serving on the Board of Directors for both the Greater Houston Area, and Texas State USBC Associations. A lifelong creative, Gabriel recently had the opportunity to direct his first short film, a project which was selected for the largest student film festival in the country. Lastly, Gabriel finds that the best way to destress is simply to kick back and listen to really good music, especially Charly García, Isabella Lovestory, and/or Elliott Smith.

Hayden Watkins

Hayden has competed in speech and debate for seven years, competing in everything from Congressional Debate to Prose. Locally, Hayden competes on the reigning Kentucky state champion team and is the first person in his team’s history to be state champion in Program Oral Interpretation. Nationally, he has qualified for the NSDA National Tournament each year and advanced to quarterfinals in Extemporaneous Speaking at NCFLs. Besides being a captain on his speech team, he is also a president of his school’s Student Government Association and a legislative coordinator/board member of the Kentucky Student Voice Team, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting student voice in Kentucky. He loves to talk about politics, cats, and anything Kentucky. Hayden is honored to be serving as a member of the NSDA Student Leadership Council.

Midlothian High School, TX

Jade Young Bio

Jade’s debate career began her freshman year of high school. She actively competes in Public Forum, Congress, and Extemp. In Public Forum Debate, Jade has achieved significant success, securing victories at tournaments such as the Westlake Thunderdome Invitational and the Princeton UIL Fall Classic. In the NSDA district tournament for national qualifiers, she has gone undefeated for two consecutive years, solidifying her spot at the national level. In Congress, Jade has earned regional champion and advanced to the state level, where she placed fourth. In Extemp, she has earned district champion for two consecutive years. Jade, empowered by her role as president for the past two years, mentors her fellow teammates, trains new members, and leads practices. Aspiring to a career in law, she is also an active member of her school’s mock trial team, where she led her team to finals for the first time in Midlothian High School history. Outside of debate, Jade actively engages with her community. She serves on the Student Advisory Council, providing insights into the student body experience to the superintendent. Additionally, Jade served as president of the Black Student Union for two years. In this role, she aimed to facilitate insightful discussions about Black historical and contemporary experiences. Jade has participated in several summer enrichment activities such as Girls State, Envision Intensive Law & Trial, and the Aspiring Young Lawyers Camp. In her leisure time, Jade enjoys spending time with friends and family, especially during her Sunday game nights. She loves reading, dancing, and has recently taken an interest in learning new card tricks. Jade is thrilled to be a part of the NSDA Student Leadership Council.

Three Brown School Students Named Finalists for Presidential Management Fellowship 

Three students from the Brown School have been selected as finalists for the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) Program , the federal government’s premier leadership development program. 

The 2024 Brown School PMF finalists are Dominique A. Horton, a doctoral candidate in social work, Alfredo R. Davila, a master’s of social work (MSW) candidate, and Joeleen C. Heman, a dual degree master’s candidate in social work and social policy. 

“While it is difficult to know exactly how the fellowship will impact my overall career, I can say with confidence that I have grown here at the Brown School,” Heman said. “I feel that these learning opportunities have better prepared me to work in complex systems while continuing to center communities. I am immensely grateful to my supervisors, professors, and peers who have shared their expertise, wisdom, and encouragement.”

The trio joins a total of 825 finalists who were selected from a pool of over 7,000 applicants worldwide. Kiran Ahuja, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) , emphasized the vital role PMF Fellows play in shaping the future of government leadership. 

“The PMF Program gives Fellows the leadership skills and exposure they need to make a difference in government and an impact within their community. Congratulations to all the 2024 PMF finalists. We cannot wait to see what you will accomplish in public service.”

PMF Fellows are appointed to a two-year, full-time federal position with salary and benefits, where they apply their skills while engaging in leadership development training that includes experiential learning, cohort-based interactive training, and optional rotational experiences. Notably, the program boasts a remarkable track record, with an average of 87% of Fellows transitioning to permanent or term positions upon program completion.

President Joe Biden highlighted his administration’s student loan forgiveness achievements in his landmark State of the Union speech on Thursday.

The speech also effectively served as the President’s opening campaign speech. Biden and former President Trump shored up the support of their respective parties following the Super Tuesday primary contests earlier in the week.

Biden laid out his economic agenda in the often-fiery address to Congress. And while he was praising student loan relief for millions of borrowers, administration officials are actively working on new plans for debt relief.

Biden Highlights Student Loan Forgiveness In Address To Congress

Biden noted that under his administration, four million borrowers have received student loan forgiveness. Despite last summer’s Supreme Court ruling blocking Biden’s mass debt cancellation initiative, officials have managed to improve, tweak, or streamline existing loan forgiveness programs through regulatory and executive actions, expanding relief for many Americans.

“When I was told I couldn’t universally just change the way in which we dealt with student loans, I fixed two student loan programs that already existed to reduce the burden of student debt for nearly four million Americans, including nurses, firefighters and others in public service,” said Biden. He was primarily referring to significant fixes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program . Before Biden took office, the program had only several thousand approvals. Bur as of last month, nearly 800,000 borrowers have now received student loan forgiveness under the program.

Biden touted the broader economic benefits of loan forgiveness, seemingly to counter arguments made by critics that student debt relief is a burden on taxpayers. “Such relief is good for the economy because folks are now able to buy a home, start a business, start a family,” he said.

Biden Student Loan Forgiveness Initiatives Lead To Nearly $140 Billion In Debt Relief

The Biden administration’s targeted efforts to provide relief to borrowers by improving existing programs has yielded results, with nearly four million borrowers collectively receiving at least $138 billion in student loan forgiveness.

Major initiatives include fixes to Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Income-Driven Repayment , as well a new IDR plan called SAVE, which itself provides for faster loan forgiveness for some borrowers. The administration has also approved group discharges for borrowers defrauded by their schools, and removed barriers for borrowers seeking loan forgiveness on the basis of medical disabilities.

“The Biden Administration has now cancelled the most student loan debt in American history,” said Student Borrower Protection Center Executive Director Mike Pierce in a statement following President Biden’s speech. “Behind these numbers are real-life Americans whose lives have been changed for the better due to the Biden Administration's efforts to tackle the student loan debt crisis.”

But Republican leaders in Congress continued to call out Biden’s student loan relief efforts as unfair and illegal.

“Americans are tired of the fallout brought about through this administration pushing an illegal student loan bailout scheme, failing to address antisemitism across college campuses, decimating Main Street America, threatening innovation in the health care marketplace, and peddling radical policies that incite ideological warfare in America’s classrooms,” said Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) in a statement prior to Biden’s speech.

Biden Pushes For More Student Loan Forgiveness And Economic Relief

The Biden administration is still implementing loan forgiveness initiatives (and some borrowers are still waiting to receive relief that’s already been approved). At the same time, the Education Department is moving forward to create a new pathway to loan forgiveness, including for those experiencing financial hardship . Final regulations for this new debt relief program are expected to be released this spring.

“The Biden Administration must move quickly to finalize and deliver his new relief plan to build on this progress,” said Pierce. “President Biden must make clear that he is not bowing out of the fight to deliver debt relief to as many borrowers as possible.”

In his State of the Union address, Biden touted his administration’s other economic achievements, including low unemployment and allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices. He also called for higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations, and a mortgage tax credit of $400 a month for two years to help first-time homebuyers.
