But with the growing population and industries, the amount of drinking water in our country is reducing. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said 'now is the time to act' to safeguard the world's water resources

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday delivered an urgent call for the world to modify and safeguard water resources to avert conflict and ensure future global prosperity.

Water is "the most precious common good," and "needs to be at the center of the global political agenda," Guterres said at the end of a three-day UN conference that experts said held a measure of promise.

"All of humanity's hopes for the future depend, in some way, on charting a new science-based course to bring the water action agenda to life," Guterres said.

"Now is the time to act."

The world is not on track to meet its 2030 water goals, including access to safe drinking water and sanitation for all.

Guterres earlier in the week described water as humanity's "lifeblood" and said its "vampiric overconsumption" had "broken the water cycle " and led to more natural disasters.

NGOs, governments and the private sector offered nearly 700 commitments before and during the three days of the UN gathering that drew some 10,000 participants. Pledges ranged from the construction of toilets to the restoration of 300,000 kilometers (186,400 miles) of degraded rivers and massive areas of wetlands.

Less than a third of the commitments have funding said Charles Iceland of the World Resources Institute think tank, adding that about a third "are going to have substantial impact."

Despite this, "these voluntary commitments are a good start," he told AFP, referring in particular to a project led by Germany on the management of the Niger River basin which touches nine nations in Africa.

'Pleasantly surprised'

"It's probably the part of the world that is the most fragile, and where we're starting to see actual violent conflict over water between different groups," he said.

But at the global level, the issue of water "is a huge problem and one conference is not going to do it," Iceland added, pleading for annual conferences on water.

"You hear a lot of pledges," Stuart Orr of WWF told AFP. "But this feels somehow quite different."

While it "is not all rosy," Orr added, "a lot of the commitments that have been made this week are very good."

He said he was "pleasantly surprised," in part, at the variety of institutions and organizations now talking about water.

"This issue is not going away. The water issue is only going to get worse. And I think that's why everybody is starting to feel maybe now really is the time to get going," Orr said.

The conference pleaded for Guterres to appoint a UN special envoy for water, which the secretary-general says is under consideration.

Without a dedicated UN agency or global treaty, "water has no home here at the UN," said Henk Ovink, water envoy of the Netherlands, which was a coorganizer of the conference.

In 2020, two billion people were still without safe drinking water and 3.6 billion lacked access to safely managed sanitation services, including 494 million who had to relieve themselves in the open, according to the latest figures compiled by the UN-Water website.

At least two billion people drink water contaminated with feces, and 2.3 billion lack basic sanitation services—conditions conducive to the spread of cholera, dysentery and polio.

While climate change makes droughts more frequent and intense, UN climate experts (IPCC) also estimate that about half of the world's population suffers from "severe" water shortages during at least part of the year.

A young Dutch woman, Aniek Moonen, addressed the conference as if she were speaking from the year 2050.

She suggested that the summit could be a pivotal moment for water management "to become more sustainable, equitable and just than ever before."

"This is the future speaking. Don't forget to listen," she told the delegates.

Water conversation which is a motto today can be seen only on papers, books, and journals. The real-life implementation is yet to start.

But how can you save water? Let me introduce you to some very basic and primary ideas to save water. First, do not let your tap run while brushing, it could save a lot. Domestically, install, and check for leakages on time to time so that not a single drop of water is wasted. We also need to educate our children, community members, and others about safe water-using habits. Installing a water harvesting system can help you to save water and also can increase the ground level of the water. In the commercial sector like agriculture, the use of sprinklers and modern methods of harvesting can save a lot of water as compared to traditional methods. Industries should try to reuse and recycle the water, rather than just discharging the used and dirty water in the lakes and rivers around. Further, planting trees will help us as they bind the soil and bring on the rainfall.

Social media has a global reach. What is posted on social media is seen by millions? So, try reaching the people on social media and use this platform as a strong tool to make people aware of the importance and techniques to save water. Water is undoubtedly the sacred gift of nature and we should all ensure that it is used wisely. No matter you are rich or poor; water is a necessity for you.

Saving water is not the responsibility of only you or me or for that sake any single individual. But on the contrary, saving water is a national cause and should be a common practice. To conclude, I would just like to add that, when you are thirsty, you do not search for any other beverage or treasure, but water. This itself is enough to explain why we need to save water.

Besides, these polluted water bodies have become home to bacteria and germs. Thus, they cause waterborne diseases and epidemics like diarrhoea, cholera, and more. Similarly, they also contaminate underground water when it seeps through the soil.

Thus, we need to prevent water pollution by adopting proper waste management policies. A single organization, government or individual won’t be able to accomplish this task. We need to do it collectively.

Ways to Prevent Water Pollution

We can all collectively control water pollution to a large extent. We need to realize that pollution’s solution is dilution. There are several methods through which one can control water pollution. To begin with, the sewage pollutants contain a lot of toxic materials. So, they must be chemically treated in order to make them less toxic.

A factor which contributes to this pollution is organic insecticides so we can reduce it by using less stable chemicals in their manufacturing process. Further, there must be regulation of industries, as they shouldn’t be allowed to dump the waste into water bodies.

Similarly, there must be proper sewage treatment plants in every city. This will allow using the same water in factories and also irrigation. Moreover, this water can also serve as a great fertilizer. In addition, we must also adopt measures to reduce the occurrences of oil spills.

As we all know that water is what gives us life and no life would be imaginable on earth without it. This is the reason why it is said that every single drop of water matters. We use water every single day in almost all our household chores and for other commercial purposes as well. We need water for drinking, washing, cooking, fishing, irrigation, etc.

However, we still waste this important resource and do not make a wise use of it. Not only do we use water recklessly and misuse it, but also cause water pollution. Garbage, industrial waste and other remnants of used articles are being dumped in oceans and rivers resulting in the contamination of water. Other toxic chemicals that run out of factories and pesticides used during agricultural practices also get discharged in water; thereby causing further pollution in water.

This doesn’t stop here; the poor system of water supply and contact of the water supply line with sewage further degrade the quality of water and make it unfit for drinking. Contaminated water poses a serious threat to the existence of human life, animals and fish. The poor and underdeveloped countries are in fact facing huge problems of water scarcity and water pollution as there is no suitable waste disposal system and poor water supply and treatment system.

They dump garbage and dispose waste products straight into the lakes and rivers. Nearly one-third population in the world does not have a resort to safe drinking water. It therefore gives rise to such water-borne diseases as diarrhea. This disease is quite rampant in underdeveloped countries or poor countries where the ratio of poor people is significantly high.

Developed countries seldom suffer from the problem of water pollution. Water pollution in such countries is caused mainly due to the unwarranted use of the pesticides in order to protect agricultural harvest. The problem of water pollution in such countries does not arise out of the poor garbage management system like that of in the underdeveloped countries where disposal and water treatment cost is usually unaffordable.

But whether it’s the developed countries or the underdeveloped ones – every nation is grappling with the situation of water crisis more or less. Strict measures should be implemented where dumping of garbage or any other toxic waste is prohibited. In addition to this, the government should adopt water conservation techniques and these techniques should be imparted to people so that misuse of water can be avoided. This is all from my side!

As you all know that our society is facing serious water crisis, it therefore calls for an immediate solution. We all will have to collectively work to be able to combat the situation in this hot climate. My other intention behind calling everyone here, especially children is to make them realize how much important water is for our survival and we should strictly avoid its misuse.

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that water is undoubtedly the “Elixir of Life”. Isn’t it? The word ‘elixir’ means a magic liquid, which is believed to cure illness or give people immortal youth. Life originated and grew in water and life is simply unimaginable without it. Water has a neutral pH value and is considered a perfect triological solvent. Water is colorless, tasteless and odorless in its pure form.

Water pollution is caused due to the contamination, i.e. discharge of such pollutants as domestic, industrial, chemical, biological, physical and so on. Water pollution involves physical or chemical change in its property that has adverse effect on the health of the human beings, including other organisms. Water pollution in the present times has become a cause of global concern. The level of pollution differs from one country to the other and also one region to the other. In developing countries, a number of epidemics are connected with contaminated water.

Based on the type or source of contaminant, water pollution can be of several types, such as:

Bacterial Pollution
Nutrient Pollution
Pesticide Pollution
Metallic Pollution
Thermal Pollution

The water gets polluted either through man-made activities or natural causes.

I am sure children, you must have studied all this in your course work and here I’m iterating the same facts. Now let’s understand some of the man-made or natural causes of water pollution:

Domestic Waste and Sewage Run Off

Domestic waste usually contains organic wastes like food leftovers, domestic garbage, cloth, paper, toiletries and run off of human excreta because of bathing, house-hold cleaning, food processing and laundering. Did you know that nearly 75 percent of water pollution is caused due to domestic and sewage wastes? Since domestic sewage usually contains organic wastes, when these are discharged in water bodies, they absorb a lot of oxygen and the amount of oxygen that go into it is defined as B.O.D., i.e. Biological Oxygen Demand.

Pesticides are synthetic compounds required for pest control. The excess of the agricultural fields when discharged in water leads to pesticide pollution of various water bodies, such as streams, rivers and lakes. There are a few industrial pesticides that also enter inland waters. These pesticides have an adverse effect on a wide range of aquatic organisms, which include fishes and insects.

Many such chemical compounds are however very much stable. A few of them disintegrate partially in order to form several toxic compounds. Pesticides that are used to kill harmful insects are either organic phosphorus compounds (Malathion) or chlorinated hydrocarbons (Endrin, DDT and aldrin). These are stable and lead to a buildup in the tissues of aquatic chemicals. Further accumulation takes place in animals when the higher we go in trophic levels.

Industrial Effluents and Discharge

Industries are also responsible for producing several organic and inorganic wastes, which eventually penetrate into the water bodies and pollute it. When the aquatic environment becomes toxic, it not only affects the population of the fish, but also forms a buildup at the bottom of these water bodies and enters into the bodies of the water animals. Resistant objects, such as metals, cans, tires, plastic wares and polythene further accumulate in water bodies and pollute them.

Hence, there are several causes of water pollution which when are recognized and put under constant checks can help us overcome the problem of water pollution.

I would like to end my speech here and continue with it in our next meeting. Meanwhile, let’s discuss what measures we can take to cope with the present situation.

I – Sukant Sharma – warmly welcome all the members of our ABC Society. As you all know this is the Day 2 of our speech giving ceremony and our Save Water Campaign is successfully making its mark. People are becoming more and more aware and are trying to cut down on the usage of water so that this precious resource could be saved as much as possible. To my surprise, in fact a greater level of maturity is being observed in our children who are not wasting water and are using it very wisely.

However, we not only will have to combat the situation of water crisis, but also need to control pollution of water. As I was discussing in my last speech the causes of water pollution, I would like to continue with the same and here is some of the remaining water polluting agents:

Fertilizers and Detergent

The chemical fertilizers are usually compounds of nitrogen, phosphates and potash. These are non-biodegradable in nature and when come in contact with water bodies due to surface sun off pose a great threat to the aquatic life.

The washing articles are usually known as detergents. They are made up of complex phosphates, which disintegrate into phosphates and other chemicals. The phosphates when absorbed by aquatic plants naturally increase the concentration of phosphorus in sewage effluents. Fishes and invertebrates become greatly affected by the detergents.

Water is utilized during various industrial processes for cooling and this resultant warmed water is often being discharged into lakes and streams. Oil or coal based generators and atomic energy plants release humongous amount of waste heat which is carried away in the form of hot water and lead to thermal pollution.

Toxic Metals

Metallurgical laboratories and mining operations are responsible for the discharge of several heavy metals like copper, zinc, mercury, lead, chromium, arsenic, etc. Mercuric compounds present in water are transformed into dimethyl and monomethyl mercury with the help of methane which is released from anaerotric breakdown of organic wastes.

Both are non-degradable and highly toxic that can cause chromosomal damage and harmful effect on kidney, liver and gills of the fishes. Toxic metals that cause air pollution, like Nickel, Cadmium and Lead may also penetrate deep down in water bodies and affect the lives of aquatic animals.

Suspended Solids

These are water pollutants in a physical form. For instance, silt is fine sediment that go into the rivers in many ways along with the surface run off. Silt augments the turbidity of water, which harms the yielding efficiency of the aquatic environment and the growth of the aquatic animals.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (B.O.D.)

The organic wastes are a part of water bodies that utilize dissolved oxygen. BOD means the amount of oxygen required for biochemical oxidation by microorganisms in unit volume of water. The oxygen demand is directly connected with the increased input of organic wastes. So BOD is a unit to measure oxygen for the biochemical degradation of organic elements present in water. The aerobic decomposers perform the task. The value of BOD is directly connected with the sum total of oxidized organic matter. BOD therefore is used as a measurement to assess the level of water pollution.

So these five are another factors contributing to water pollution and we should have the requisite knowledge of these factors to be able to keep them under control. With this, I rest my speech.

I – Rajat Kapoor, one of the committee members of Save Water, Save Earth Foundation – welcome you all to the 11 th annual meeting. It is good to see you all after a long time; I have been out of the country for some official reasons and hence couldn’t attend the preceding two meetings.

Now that I am here in my own country and to my dismay I have come across a serious situation of water crisis. On the top of this, I observe people misusing this precious resource. This should be strictly prohibited by our government and people seen wasting water should be heavily fined. In fact, the government should remain agile about such human agencies that cause water pollution and contaminate the quality of water. Water pollution is one of the alarming issues in the present times that the countries in the world are grappling with.

Water Pollution could be termed as the discharge of toxic substances into our water bodies – lakes, estuaries, rivers, streams and oceans to the point where the elements interfere with the favorable usage of water or with the natural working of ecosystems. Besides the discharge of substances, such as microorganisms or chemicals, water pollution also consists of the release of energy in the form of heat, radioactivity into water bodies.

Water bodies gets polluted by a wide range of substances, such as

Plant nutrients;
Radioactive Substances;
Pathogenic Microorganisms;
Petroleum (oil);
Sediments putrescible organic waste;
Toxic chemicals

It’s time when some preventive measures need to be taken through suitable infrastructure as well as management plans. The infrastructure consists of wastewater treatment plans. Industrial wastewater treatment and sewage treatment plants are often required to preserve water channels from untreated wastewater. If we happen to control the process of erosion from construction sites and adopt agricultural wastewater treatment, it can help prevent water pollution.

Nature-based solutions can also help overcome water pollution. It is important to keep a check on the urban runoff, which reduces the quantity and speed of flow. There are excellent management practices adopted for water pollution which consist of such approaches as reducing the water quantity and improving the quality of water.

So if problem is there; solution is also definitely there. It’s just that we need to identify the problem, assess the nature of problem, its source and origin and then work upon it accordingly.

Roads in England and Wales are at "breaking point" with pothole repairs at an eight-year high, according to a new report.

The annual Alarm survey by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) found that local authorities expect to fix two million potholes in the current financial year.

That is up 43% compared with 1.4 million during the previous 12 months.

And it is the highest annual total since 2015-16 when 2.2 million potholes were filled in.

The survey found that average highway maintenance budgets increased by 2.3% in the 2023-24 financial year compared with the previous 12 months.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will address the 1922 Committee tomorrow evening, it has been confirmed.

Sky News has been told this is the "usual end of term meeting with PM before Easter recess".

Reports suggest the meeting will take place at 5pm.

As a reminder, the next parliamentary recess will be between 26 March and 15 April.

A Labour Party selection contest is being investigated by the police over allegations of "computer misuse" after reports of a data breach.

The selection process for a parliamentary candidate in Croydon East was paused by the party in November after complaints that data on local members provided to some candidates was inaccurate.

There were also allegations the membership database had been tampered with.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed last night they were now investigating the matter, following the conclusion of Labour's own inquiry.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We have received allegations of computer misuse in relation to an internal selection process for a political party in Croydon during October and November last year.

"The Met's Cyber Crime team are investigating and enquiries are ongoing."

The Conservative Party has been fined £10,750 after "failing to accurately report donations", the Electoral Commission has confirmed.

The commission found the party had failed to "accurately report the amounts of 19 donations in the form of a seconded employee, and a further late reported donation".

It comes in the wake of racist remarks made by Frank Hester, a high-profile Conservative donor who has handed £10m to the party.

It has been alleged that another £5m donation has been made, and not yet made public - as details of donations are not due to be published until June.

The Electoral Commission said: "The party under-reported non-cash donations, in the form of an employee seconded to the party by a donor between April 2020 to December 2023.

"The non-cash donations were under reported by more than £200,000, when the seconded employee went from part time to full time work at the party.

"The party also reported late a single non-cash donation relating to the same seconded employee, in December 2023."

Louise Edwards, director of regulation and digital transformation, added: "Where we find offences, we carefully consider the circumstances before deciding whether to impose a sanction.

"We take into account a range of factors before making our final decision, including proportionality."

More now from Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, who has rejected suggestions of a "double standard" in the government accepting the ownership of Manchester City by an Emirati royal.

Separately, ministers plan to oppose the Gulf state-backed takeover of the Telegraph group.

Ms Frazer said it is important to "draw a distinction" between investment in sport and a government-linked acquisition of a newspaper, saying the latter is "inappropriate".

She was asked whether there is a "double standard" in the UK government giving a "tick" to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, an Emirati royal, owning Manchester City, but attempting to block the UAE-backed Telegraph sale.

The minister told ITV: "I don't think there is... we believe in this country in the free press.

"The media's job is to hold power to account and it's therefore inappropriate for the UK government to own a newspaper, and it's therefore also inappropriate for a foreign state to own a newspaper.

"But we are very much open for business in terms of foreign investment in other spheres, like football."

She added: "They're totally different."

Yesterday, five episodes of GB News programmes that were presented by Tory MPs were found by Ofcom to have breached impartiality rules.

The watchdog's probe examined two shows presented by former House of Commons leader Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, and three jointly hosted by former pensions secretary Esther McVey and her husband - backbencher Philip Davies.

Reacting to this today, Sir Jacob said the ruling is "eccentric" and "barmy".

He told Times Radio: "It is a barmy decision from Ofcom.

"I was talking about a stabbing - how can there be due impartiality? We know stabbing is bad. Would they get the stabber on there to argue why it wasn't bad? It is an eccentric decision."

Sir Jacob said Channel 4 News is "left-wing" and suggested that Ofcom applies its rules on due impartiality to some broadcasters, but not to others.

Lucy Frazer has today insisted that Rishi Sunak is "the right man" to lead the Conservatives despite "lots of excellent talent on our benches".

Her comments come in the wake of speculation about a Tory plot to oust him before the general election, and replace him with Commons leader Penny Mordaunt.

A source close to Ms Mordaunt has dismissed this as "nonsense".

The culture secretary sought to defend the prime minister's record on the economy, saying he had done an "outstanding job."

Asked whether Ms Mordaunt would be a good leader, Ms Frazer told the BBC: "We've got lots of excellent talent on our benches but the prime minister, who I worked with when he was chancellor and obviously I'm in cabinet with now, I think does an outstanding job.

"He is full of integrity. He has a plan which will deliver, which is already delivering, and has huge knowledge about the economy...

"So I think he's absolutely the right man to lead the country and he has shown he can deliver across the board, but importantly on that key issue which is the economy."

One year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023, leaving four pledges outstanding.

However, he is faring less well with his other pledges.

It has been confirmed the UK is now in recession, which means the PM's pledge to grow the economy is not being met.

Asked about last night's debate on the Lords' Rwanda bill amendments, Darren Jones described it as hours of walking around in circles.

"The Rwanda policy has always been a gimmick," the Labour frontbencher says.

"If the government pass the policy and get a plane off the ground, it will affect we think around 1% of asylum seekers who have not had asylum granted and need to go home to their country of origin."

He adds that the policy will "not fix the root problem".
