Comfortable, well constructed chairs, with a hinge instead of a "stop" where the back leg connects to the back rest. That's where a lot of chairs fail, and may be partly why the chairs are rated to 300# (more than many). The plastic back rest is screwed onto the frame, and wraps around the frame, with the back rest pad overlying the frame, so these shouldn't come apart like some that are just tack welded together. The chairs also fold completely flat, which would make storing them easier. The seats are comfortable (for folding chairs), the backrest is set a little lower than some, providing a little lumbar support. The frame is an inch narrower than some other folding chairs we have, which may be an issue for a heavyset person with wide hips. The seat fabric is attractive and the padding thin but comfortable. The table came with the cross-braces connecting pairs of legs about 2" down, unlike the one in the picture. I suspect that is a design upgrade. Each pair of legs is offset to the right, so they can all fold straight ahead, flat into the table. The set arrived in good condition, with the only noticeable defects of a couple small burrs on the metal seat tubing (like a fleck of metal dust stuck to the paint), that I can feel if I run my fingers over the right spots, but none are in annoying places so far. Overall, a very acceptable folding table set, and way less expensive than some.

My child absolutely loves this! We had a water table for about 3 years, a little more basic than this one. We decided to upgrade. We chose this one based on the accessories (the people, slides, see- saw diving board, etc) my child also loves that this one holds sand. It’s a large play area and would be perfect for a multiple Child home. I read some reviews from a few different stores. One of the main complaints is that there are not pre-drilled holes. This is true. I have arthritis in my hands and had no problems screwing the legs on. So don’t be intimidated about that, if that is a concern for you. The other complaint I saw was the big slide not attaching and the characters not sliding down as they should. Both true. Personally I like that it doesn’t attach because we use it in our sand box as well. It seems to hold in place well, even without being secured to the ship. The fact the characters don’t slide down very well is more irritating to me than my child. She pours water over them and that helps them move down the slide with ease. I am extremely happy with what we got. I would choose this one over and over again if I had to make the decision.

This set was great for our setting. The table's height can be adjusted which is nice for the one year olds all the way up to 5 year olds. The chairs cannot be adjusted, but are sturdy and light none the less. A one year old can move the chairs around, but an adult can sit on them. In my experience a 1 1/2 year old can get into the chair independently by scooting back into it, but their feet still come off the floor about an inch or two. When we ordered it the actual table top did not arrive because the carrier lost it. Wayfair was nice enough to send me a replacement. When a replacement top wasn't available, they sent a whole new set. This was very nice of them for the inconvenience of opening up my business without a kids table ready. One of the corners of the table top we actually received was cracked a little bit. But the table is sturdy and will withstand many years. The chairs stack nicely too. Lots of room on each side for two chairs, three could fit on one side, but we are going to stick to two.

This table worked out great when we needed additional seating for a large family gathering. I searched a long time for a folding table and this one checked all the boxes. First, it is a truly portable table. It folds and opens very easily and it isn't too heavy to move around. Second, it is a very sturdy table. It never felt wobbly or flimsy when I had my good china and lots of serving ware on it. but it's not too heavy to move to storage when it's not in use. Third, the 30" width made it easy to have people sitting on both sides of the table and not feel crowded. Finally, the legs of the table do not bar someone from sitting on both ends of the table like so many folding tables do. I'm glad I found this table! Worth every penny.

Almost perfect. This is a good solid wood sandbox. I really, really like that the seats fold in and the canopy comes down to completely cover and protect the sand from the elements. The design was well thought out. That being said, the instructions were terrible. You are better off just looking at the end result and putting it together yourself. Think logically, think steps ahead when assembling and you’ll have no problems. The only negative is the plastic tarp that goes inside the box. It doesn’t attach. The don’t provide a way to attach it to the box for some reason. Yea, the sand weighs it down but the sides still stick out where sand can and does get knocked between it and the box.

When I put together a playroom for my (then) toddler in 2021, I built the space around his desk. Before we got a desk for him, Augie used our tiny coffee table for arts and crafts. After a while, his scribbles, stamping, and Play-Doh got everywhere — it was clear he needed his own, larger desk. He loved using it for drawing or playing with one of his many train-track systems. And whether you’re looking to upgrade your child’s homework space or fully deck out their arts-and-crafts corner , picking a desk that fits their size and needs is essential. But one piece of advice: Don’t discount your child’s preferences. “They should have a say and perhaps even design or create the desk or work area,” says Laurie Block Spigel, a writing teacher and homeschooling parent who runs the website Homeschool NYC . “A personalized desk that has room for the things they need, and is also inspiring , is best.”

To help you find the best desk for your kid, I spoke to 12 experts — including teachers and parents — about their favorite desks for kids at every price point. Read on for their picks, which I’ve organized by age group from preschoolers through high-schoolers.

What we’re looking for

Age appropriateness : Julia Niego, a certified educational therapist and a consultant at Organizational Tutors , says that anyone looking to buy a desk for their child should start by considering “the age and development of the child, and the work they’re going to be doing in this space.” Dr. Sanam Hafeez , a neuropsychologist and a member of the faculty at Columbia University’s Teachers College, agrees. “A younger student will likely be focused on places to store crayons, markers, and some toys ,” she says, “while an older child will need a surface area for laptops, other electronics, and a place to plug in.” Because the needs of a preschooler are so different from those of a high-schooler, I’m not naming a best overall pick for all ages and instead I’m picking a best overall for each age group: preschoolers and kindergarteners, elementary-school students, and junior-high and high-school students.

Dimensions : Size matters. “The desk that my 16-year-old likes to work at is a different size than what my 9-year-old is using,” says Andrea Thorpe, a 12-year homeschooler of three and the founder of website African-American Homeschool Moms . The dimensions are important for you, the parent, to understand too, so you can make sure there’s enough space in your home.

26.6”L x 16”H x 20”W

Even the youngest of learners need a place to do their work. Tze Chun, the mother of a 3-year-old and founder/CEO of online gallery Uprise Art , chose this bentwood table-and-chair set from ECR4Kids for her daughter. As it happens, Chun says she actually found it on the Strategist, where contributor Laura Perciasepe wrote about how it looks like a much more expensive piece from Herman Miller. “We were looking for a desk-and-chair set for our living room that could live alongside our other furniture without sticking out like a sore thumb,” says Chun. Because the middle of her living room was the best spot for her daughter’s workspace, Chun says the desk’s super-discreet look, coupled with the fact that it can transform into a coffee table and two ottomans (or small side tables) at night when her kid isn’t using it, made this a no-brainer. Importantly, she adds, it’s a more-than-serviceable substitute for her daughter’s at-school desk. “It’s a great height for her to put puzzles together, either sitting or standing, and the past six months she’s been using it as her ‘work station’ while her Montessori school has been closed.”

Best (less-expensive) desk for preschoolers and kindergarteners

24.8”L x 18.9”W x 17.8”H

Rose Aka-James , a homeschooler and member of mater mea , an online community for Black moms, chose this set from Ikea for her 3-year-old son who loves to do arts and crafts and different types of hands-on activities. “I needed a desk that was durable, easy to set up, and, most importantly, easy to clean,” she told us, adding that the Lätt checks all her boxes. “I knew I’d be homeschooling and we would be spending a lot of time at this desk, and this is cost-effective and simple for our needs.”

Best mid-range desk for preschoolers and kindergarteners

16”H x 23.5”Dia

For something in the middle of those two prices, this Crate and Barrel set is a stylish option. Chun has this table-and-chair set in her daughter’s room as a workstation specifically for arts and crafts. “We put her caddy of supplies in the middle; this way she can walk around the table or sit to make her drawings and collages,” she says, adding that the desk works so well, she even bought a second one for when her daughter goes to Grandma’s house. The chairs are light but sturdy, she promises, adding that the set “takes up a very compact footprint and the table has no sharp corners to worry about.” Plus: “Glue-stick residue and crayons wipe off very easily.” While it’s not a huge discount from the best overall set above, it’s a good price for such a nice-looking set.

Best splurge-worthy desk for preschoolers and kindergarteners

54”L x 24”W x 18.5”H

Architecture and design critic Alexandra Lange says that she used her Elfa desk for years before her daughter started using it as her school-from-home desk. (While Lange’s daughter is using it at 9 years old, Lange says it’s probably best for kids up to 7 years old because the desktop is long, but not very wide, so it becomes harder to fit more supplies that may be needed as kids age.) It has a melamine desktop and comes with six mesh drawers that Lange promises can hold a lot. You can even add a roll of craft paper to the desktop, so that your child will always have a surface to draw on. The rounded-corner version Lange bought is no longer available, but this straight-edged version is the exact same otherwise.

Best desks for elementary-school students

According to Hafeez, choosing a desk that grows with your elementary-school-age child would be a wise investment. “Buying an adjustable desk with various height settings means you won’t have to replace the desk as your child’s needs change.” The Einstein Kids desk Hafeez recommends is no longer available, but it’s similar to this souped-up version that Melissa Young, an engineering manager at Vox Media, has for her 5-year-old twins. (Technically, she has two — one for each child.) Although they are currently in kindergarten, Young says she plans for the twins to use these well into their elementary years, noting that the desk can go high enough for her to use it, too (she’s five-foot-three). “My hope is that the desks will grow with the kids,” she says. This is larger than Hafeez’s pick, and it has both a tilting section and a flat area on the desktop. The desk, she adds, is “really sturdy and big enough for their materials and a laptop.”

Best (less-expensive) desk for elementary-school students

37.8”L x 22.9”W x 28.4”H

This Ikea desk that Niego recommends is a more affordable option if you want something adjustable. “It’s just a simple desk, but it can be adjusted to three heights as your kid gets taller,” she says. By simply turning the knobs on the legs, you can have three different heights — 23 inches, 26 inches, and 28 inches. For an extra $25, you can get a made-for-this-desk storage unit that stands right on top of it.

Best mid-range desk for elementary-school students

52”L x 22.9”W x 29.9”H

Stony Pak, a professor of education and mom to fifth- and second-grade boys, also stresses the importance of every kid having a designated workspace if possible. “A desk with some materials like pencils and paper in a quiet area makes it much more conducive to doing schoolwork,” she says. Pak’s fifth-grader uses the Alex desk from Ikea, which she likes for its small footprint and its two slim drawers that provide plenty of storage. Another nifty feature she told us about is the desk’s built-in cable-management system, which allows her son to easily store and access his chargers for all the devices he needs.

Best splurge-worthy desk for elementary-school students

24”L x 42”W x 30”H

Lora Appleton, the founder of children’s design gallery kinder MODERN and Female Design Council , says that one of her favorite proper desks for children grades two and up is the wooden Stash Desk from Bludot, which her son uses at home. “He’s in sixth grade and it is meeting all of his needs,” she says. “There’s room for his Chromebook and desktop-attached camera, with plenty of space to still write with pens and pencils.” Its single drawer offers just the right amount of storage, she adds.

As many of our experts have noted, if you buy a desk that can grow with your child, they can have it from elementary school all the way through their teen years. But for those who may be shopping for their teen’s first home desk, we heard about a few that experts say are great for older kids. Homeschooler Emily Nicholson says that she uses this minimal desk for her ninth- and seventh-grade sons. In her experience, avoiding too many drawers or shelves actually helps with organization at this age. “All kids do is stash their papers and junk without cleaning or organizing,” she says, which is why she likes that this one has small drawers that offer just enough storage without becoming bottomless pits of clutter. It also has a fairly large workspace for spreading out.

Best (less-expensive) desk for middle-school and high-school students

28.8”L x 19.6”W x 29.5”H

If you’re looking for something more compact or just want a more affordable option, this desk is about the same as the Besta Burs above, but just smaller (and $170 cheaper). Nicholson also owns and uses this one for her middle- and high-schoolers, and as with the desk above, appreciates its small drawers.

Best mid-range desk for middle-school and high-school students

Retired teacher Gabe Lewis (the mom of former Strategist senior editor Casey Lewis) says that having ample surface area is so important, especially for older students who rely even more on laptops and iPads (in addition to their other supplies) while schooling from home or doing homework. She originally recommended this HOHO Computer Desk for teenage students, noting that it’s “wide enough to spread out, but not so deep to take up much room.” Her pick is no longer available, but this wood desk from IOTXY has nearly identical measurements. It’s just a bit wider, which is even better for older students in need of more workspace. It doesn’t have a shelf below to hold books, which Lewis liked, but it does have two drawers, and it’s made entirely of wood, which Lewis says is a bonus: “It’s been studied that the more nature you can bring to a workspace, the better it is for your mental space,” she says.

Best splurge-worthy desk for middle-school and high-school students

57”L x 18”W x 30”H

Older students will probably have the most opinions on their desk, which is why Hafeez suggests this model as a fancy option “for teens developing a sense of personal style.” She says the desk’s sleek silhouette and gold hardware make it look clean and modern, while its ample surface and seven drawers make it multifunctional and offer plenty of storage. Adding to its functionality is a very teen-friendly built-in power strip with four outlets, which should be plenty for all their school gadgets.

What is homework in the first place? In a nutshell, it is one of the forms of educational activities performed by students outside the classroom or in extracurricular time. This form of activity can pursue a number of goals:

• To help students assimilate and retain the material presented in the class better;
• To let students self-study certain topics or concepts that don’t require clarification from the teacher;

For decades, homework of all shapes and kinds has been an integral part of the educational process. This type of activity is used by pretty much all education facilities, regardless of the level, and all across the world. However, the essence and types of homework can vary from country to country.

Namely, due to a significant difference in the overall education system in Russia, the types of homework assigned to students in this country can be somewhat different. For example, it will be different from homework types assigned, say, in the US. As we know, here, the largest academic challenge facing students is writing, which can be delegated to make my essay service professionals. But, the situation in Russian education facilities is different.

In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the homework in Russia and discover what types of this extracurricular activity are there.

Basic Requirements for the Content and Volume of Homework

In Russia, both the volume and content of homework are regulated by law. The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation sets very specific sanitary and epidemiological norms for the conditions and organization of training in educational institutions and closely monitors their compliance.

According to these regulations, the organization of home schoolwork has to be an integral part of the general problem of improving the educational process at school. The content, nature, and functions of homework cannot be considered in isolation from the content, nature, and methods of teaching applied in the classroom. It is during the lessons that teachers must create the right conditions for the successful completion of homework.

Many components and stages of the lesson are directly related to the subsequent completion of homework: checking homework, assigning homework lessons, students’ independent work in the lesson, etc. The combination of these components should be such that in the lesson, the student would get fully prepared for the homework and so that the lesson and subsequent independent work are a uniform process.

Currently, there are the following basic requirements for homework in Russia:

• The overall volume of the homework should not exceed 30% of the total amount of work performed in the classroom.
• The total time spent by students on homework should not exceed: 1.5 hours for 2 through 3 grade; 2 hours for 4 through 5 grade; 2.5 hours for 6 through 8 grade; and 3.5 for 9 through 11 grade.

According to stats, Russia is among the countries where students spend the most time on homework – on average, they are dealing with 9.7 hours of homework per week.

Types and Forms of Homework in Russia

Schools and higher education facilities in Russia use different types of homework assignments to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the learning process. Namely, we can distinguish the following types of assignments:

• Individual;
• Differentiated;
• One for the whole class;
• Compiling homework for a deskmate.

Now, let’s look at each type in detail.

As you can easily guess, individual homework is usually assigned to individual students and is tailored to their specific needs, the current level of knowledge, existing gaps, and other individual factors. This form of homework makes it easy for the teacher to check the level of knowledge of a particular student. Such work can be done on cards or using printed workbooks.

Group homework is also a pretty common activity. It implies that the class is being divided into smaller groups of students, and each of the groups is assigned to work on a specific task that is part of the overall classroom assignment.

Differentiated homework is shaped based on the concept of differentiated instruction, which implies distinguishing students’ differences and using them to boost the effectiveness of learning. For example, this type of homework can be characterized by the following features:

• The assignment is the same for everyone, but the method of its completion varies depending on each student’s differences.
• There can be several options in the assignment, giving students the right to choose any of them independently.

Compiling homework for a deskmate is the most innovative approach to assigning homework. It implies that students will formulate the homework tasks for their peers themselves, based on the tasks that have been performed in the classroom.

Creative assignments include academic writing, personal projects, research, etc. They are typically assigned less frequently, and teachers give students more time to complete them. For example, a typical homework can have a deadline in just a day, whereas students should be given at least a week to complete a creative assignment.

Finally, the last and the most common type of homework in Russia is one assignment for the whole class. This can include different types of activities, including reading, writing, problem-solving, testing, etc. Typically, this is the form of the task students in Russia are dealing with daily.

I turned my kitchen table into a classroom. Then I took the idea schoolwide.

Students need a space where they feel safe enough to focus with confidence..

Each year when June came around, a handful of my students faced a dilemma: Knock out those last assignments, or extend their high school career one more semester.

These young adults had no time to lose. With many already bringing up kids of their own, they scraped together what they could to buy groceries and pay rent. Many claimed gangs. All had abandoned or been abandoned by traditional schools in their South or East Los Angeles neighborhoods and now attended our one-room alternative high school.

As students in an independent studies environment, they built their school schedule around their complicated lives and worked at their own pace to complete assignments for one subject at a time. There were no traditional classes, just me as the sole teacher to guide them through it all. Now, so close to the finish line, it only seemed right to give them what I gave my own kid: a kitchen table where we shared a hot supper before buckling down for some homework each night.

We kept the rules simple: No one under the age of 18 for liability reasons. No cell phones and all focus. Leave by 10 p.m., because my husband and I were already both too old for all-nighters. Keep the language clean, because my child was still in elementary school.

It worked. Fueled by Trader Joe’s snacks and their own grit, each June these “kitchen table students” put the finishing flourishes on their last essays and made peace with math. Once they did, these students proudly walked across the graduation stage.

Two years later, as a middle school principal in a similarly under-resourced community, I faced an interesting dilemma. Despite students’ strong standardized test scores, many courses had fail rates of 50% or more. “They just don’t sit down at the kitchen table and do their homework,” a teacher asserted.

“Let’s talk about why that is,” I said. “Let’s figure out a way to rethink what the kitchen table might be.”

Together as a staff we began brainstorming, imagining the literal kitchen table space as it might look for each student. For some of our students, that meant no table at all, because they lived in a motel or a car. Some had a kitchen table, but there were so many people in the house that there was no room to set up shop there. Some didn’t have electricity. Some didn’t have quiet. Some didn’t have adults at home in the evenings to get them going. Some didn’t have anyone at all to ask for help when they got stuck. Some had to make dinner. Some had to watch after younger siblings and cousins. Some went to church every night of the week. Some worked. Some ran the streets. Some conducted business in the streets.

We knew we couldn’t ensure all of our students had real kitchen tables where learning could happen. So we moved from the literal to the metaphorical. A “kitchen table” is a space where you can breathe easily, and where you are comfortable and safe enough to focus with confidence. There must be time, lots of time, without interruptions from family drama, from the street, from work that brings in money now but isn’t going to get anyone to college all on its own.

We resolved that we would list out the students who wouldn’t/couldn’t/didn’t do their homework. Every adult at the school would take on a cohort of these students to nudge and nag, to cheer for and cheer up. We couldn’t all be everything to our students. Some of us were great at answering algebra questions. Some of us knew the days each local food bank was open. The essential task was simply to keep tabs on our kitchen table students and connect them to the adults at the school or the agencies in the community who had what they needed.

Four years ago, COVID pandemic restrictions elevated the kitchen table to schoolhouse status. As a society, we did what we had to do to keep people alive. But we know now what we suspected even then: Many young people were locked down at home without a kitchen table — literally, metaphorically, or both. They paid a huge price. They lost out on learning. Their mental health suffered. Their hopes and dreams seemed and still seem further from reach. How, now, will we make up for lost time when so many students never really had a kitchen table to begin with?

I’m not suggesting educators take their work with them each night, but I do believe healthy school communities can make the metaphor real. At its heart, the kitchen table is hope held out for young people who might struggle to find it on their own. It is having somebody who asks “How are you?” each day and pays attention to the answer. It is adults knowing whether each student has a home today and who might not have one tomorrow. It is having someone to ask for help — with math or with life, or both. Both old-fashioned and radical, the kitchen table metaphor means every student has at least one space in the day to call their own, to feel safe, and to be seen.

At some point, who hasn’t daydreamed about attending one of the world’s many beautiful boarding schools in some faraway, majestic land? Thanks to films like Dead Poet’s Society, the Harry Potter series, or even the recently released The Holdovers, there’s certain allure around sleepaway prep schools: You’ll live with your best friends, discover secrets in storied halls, and spend free time immersed in beautiful nature. Of course, films make the classes, which often take place in state-of-the-art facilities, appear as mesmerizing as they are rigorous. But what about the nonfictional boarding schools? While we can’t say just how much art imitates life in the films, these real-life beautiful boarding schools make us believe that the set designers got it right. Below, AD visits nine striking boarding schools around the world.

TASIS (Montagnola, Switzerland)

The American School in Switzerland, or TASIS, is a a coed boarding and day school founded in 1956. Located on Collina d’Oro (the Hill of Gold), the prep school overlooks Lake Lugano.

Institut auf dem Rosenberg (St. Gallen, Switzerland)

Old and new blend at Switzerland’s Institut auf dem Rosenberg, where one can find Art Nouveau villas, the Rosenberg Space Habitat (a 3D-printed structure designed to house two people in space), and even a learning pavilion with a Vitra furniture concept . “At Rosenberg, we honor our architectural heritage by combining it with modern design, crafting a distinctive educational setting that stimulates the creativity and imagination of young individuals,” Bernhard Gademann, president of the board, tells AD . “This fusion creates a unique learning and living experience that fosters a sense of history and appreciation for human innovation, showcasing cutting-edge technology.”

Eton College (Eton, Berkshire)

Founded in 1440 by Henry VI, Eton College is known for its alumni, known as Old Etonians , which includes 19 prime ministers, actors, and even Prince William and Harry. The school has over 500 buildings spread over less than a square mile, which span architecture styles including neoclassical and Tudor.

Subiaco Academy (Subiaco, Arkansas)

Another boys boarding school, Subiaco Academy was founded in 1928 and teaches grades 7–12. The school is part of Subiaco Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, featuring striking cloisters.

Emma Willard School (Troy, New York)

Located in Troy, New York, the Emma Willard School is a private day and boarding school for girls in grades 9–12 founded by Emma Willard, a female education activist. Three of the buildings on campus are designed in the collegiate Gothic style, which circle a balmy central quad.

Schule Schloss Salem International College (Baden-Württemberg, Germany)

Schule Schloss Salem is spread across three campuses, but its most notable facilities are those in Salem, Germany. Housed inside a former Cistercian monastery known as Salem Abbey, the lower and middle schoolers take classes inside what is now Salem Castle.

St. Andrew’s School (Middletown, Delaware)

There are only three coed schools in the United States where all students board, and perhaps the most recognizable is St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware. The idyllic campus—which spans 2,200 acres—stood in for the fictional Welton Academy in Dead Poet’s Society.

St. Stephen’s School Rome (Rome, Italy)

Within walking distance to the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, and the Roman Forum, St. Stephen’s School is located in the heart of Rome. An American school, the founders’ chose to start the school in Eternal City because it is “the symbol and repository of the enduring ethical, cultural, and religious values of the West” and “one of the most cosmopolitan international crossroads of the modern world.” The school is perched on Aventine Hill, one of the Seven Hills on which ancient Rome was built.

Woodstock School (Mussoorie, India)

Perched along the foothills of the Himalayas sits Asia’s oldest international boarding school, Woodstock School. Once visited by Pearl Buck, a Nobel- and Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist, she wrote a foreword in the school’s 1963 yearbook , “It may be a good thing to live on the top of mountains and on the edge of precipices—you learn early not to fear the heights and depths.”

The Biden administration today announced a new environmental regulation that forces manufacturers of heavy trucks to quickly transition their new vehicles to electric power or other low-pollution technologies.

Together with a similar regulation on passenger cars issued last week , the new rules represent the administration’s most significant effort to transform the transportation industry, which is the nation’s largest source of fossil fuel emissions.

The new rule does not mandate the use of electric motors, but rather sets increasingly strict emissions limits across manufacturers’ production lines. Officials project that it will increase the percentage of new nonpolluting long-haul trucks sold in the U.S. from 2 percent to as much as 25 percent by 2032.

But that won’t be cheap or easy. The shift to electric trucks lags far behind the adoption of electric personal vehicles, in part because electric eighteen-wheelers can cost two or three times as much as a diesel truck and require large, heavy batteries that reduce the truck’s capacity. Also, there are currently only 5,000 charging stations in the U.S. capable of serving heavy trucks, far fewer than what truckers say would be required to make the transition.

Germany, a loyal Israel ally, shifts its tone

For German leaders, support for Israel has long been considered a “Staatsräson,” or national reason for existence, as a way of atoning for the Holocaust. But some officials there have begun to question whether their backing of Israel’s campaign in Gaza has gone too far.

The change in tone is partly a response to fears that Israel will go ahead with its planned invasion of the Gazan city of Rafah — a concern that U.S. officials share.

A U.S. reporter has spent a year in a Russian prison

One year ago today, Russian authorities detained Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, and accused him of spying for the U.S. government. He is the first American reporter to be held on espionage charges in Russia since the end of the Cold War. The U.S. and The Journal vehemently deny the accusations, but this week his detention was extended for another three months.

Vladimir Putin recently said that he would consider trading Gershkovich in a prisoner swap, but my colleague Valerie Hopkins, who covers Russia and knows Gershkovich, said his future is still uncertain. “It’s incredibly difficult to make any kind of agreement at this time,” she told us. “Not a day has gone by when I’m not thinking about what he might be doing.”

School absences have spiked since the pandemic

Across the country, an estimated 26 percent of public school students were considered chronically absent during the last school year, up from 15 percent before the pandemic . That spike, educators said, suggests that something fundamental has shifted in American childhood and the culture surrounding school. “Our relationship with school became optional,” one expert said.

Absenteeism has increased in districts big and small, and across income levels and races. But poor communities are facing an even bigger crisis: Around 32 percent of students in the poorest districts of the U.S. were chronically absent during the 2022-23 school year.

ONE LAST THING

How the bunny became cute.

If you look around this weekend, you’ll notice that cute bunnies are everywhere: in chocolate, in children’s toys and even at the White House. But it wasn’t always this way. Early versions of the Easter Bunny were enigmatic and omniscient figures, as likely to punish a naughty child as reward a good one.

It wasn’t until the late 1930s, following a series of hit children’s books, that the bunny became the cuddly character we know today .
