Free Articulation Worksheets

60+ articulation worksheets ready for parents, therapists, and children. For first timers, please follow the getting started guide below.

Getting started guide

Each worksheet comes with 16 words. You can either print the sheet out and write on it directly, or  laminate it for reuse. The cards can easily be cut into flashcards as well.

Have the child practice lip and tongue placement.

Practice the sound in isolation multiple times. Give the child a star for each attempt.

Work on syllables by combining the middle letter with each of the outer vowels. Switch the order of the letter with the vowels to practice initial, medial, and final syllables (ra, ar, ara, etc).

Every time the child says the target word make a star in 1 of the 5 circles at the bottom of the card.

Use the chart to see the average age a child produces certain english sounds. This is based off of research published in 2018. Click on the letter to jump to the worksheets or scroll down to see the worksheets in alphabetical order.

Free Speech Therapy Tools: Worksheets and Printables

Worksheets and Printables Are Excellent Additions To Your Speech Therapy Regimen.

Our in-depth look at tools for speech therapy continues with a look at free speech therapy tools that you can use at home. Worksheets and Printable Handouts. We have searched the Internet for worksheets that you can use with your child to use as support material in your speech therapy efforts.  There are many different worksheets and handouts to choose from, so we have narrowed it down for you and organized these activities into two categories: activities to help build speech and language skills and activities to help build literacy. And, as we continue to emphasize, these are not a substitute for proper evaluation and treatment from an SLP. These handouts are purely to provide your child with hands-on resources for improving articulation, language building and increased literacy at home and to help build a foundation for correct speech patterns and comprehension.

Many sites contain cute printables that seem better suited for a child’s entertainment, rather than actual speech therapy. Our goal with the list below is to provide valuable links and resources for both families and speech therapists looking for engaging and effective material to use as a supplement to current speech therapy treatments. The benefit to using printable handouts as a speech therapy tool, (other than the price), is that you can find worksheets that treat a specific issue of speech therapy or articulation disorder. For example, you can work specifically on the sound of /r/, if that is the only area where your child needs help. Or, help your child recognize the sounds that vowels make.

We continue to learn from you, so we encourage you to share your best sites and printable sources, so that we can all have access to this helpful information.

Melissa Berg

Tuesday 26th of July 2022

Hi Hailey, Thanks so much for reaching out! I tried printing the BW and it is very slightly fuzzy on my end. I'm wondering if you try taking the color version and simply printing that one in BW instead. All my best, Melissa

Homework Tracker reviews

A brilliant, helpful & free extension which helps in not forgetting to do homework Get this if you easily forget in doing homework often.

It works amazingly! I just wish it would say when assignments are due by the time, not the date. For example weekly math is due my 3 pm today, not due sep 11 or sep 10.

This app need 2 additional things to make it great . First you need a synchronization tool . I Use My desktop at home and Laptop at work. It would be excellent if i could create a calendar schedule that would be synchronized to both. Second you need notification

Speech Homework: Helpful Tool or Waste of Paper?

speech homework tracker

During my student teaching I saw my mentor pass out a worksheet to each student at the end of each session. When I visited with my grad school friends they told me theirs did the same. So, naturally we all passed out those skill specific worksheets at the end of each session.  My first year working in my school I was so excited! I had binders of worksheets labeled, sorted, and ready to go. I was couldn’t wait to pass them out and see my students’ progress soar! Then reality set in.  I soon realized that only a small handful of students ever turned in the homework, that is of course if they didn’t lose it.

Slide1

So, I pose the question: Is speech homework helpful or a just a waste of paper?  Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

– Helps students practice and reinforce skills from therapy.

– Encourage family involvement in speech therapy.

– Helps students make faster, more steady progress of targeted skills.

– If homework doesn’t get done or is lost then no practice or reinforcement of skills is had.

– Paper ($) and time are needed in preparing materials for homework.

For me, the pros out weigh the cons. But, that doesn’t erase the frustrations that occur when speech homework consistently isn’t completed.  After years of this I come to a conclusion: The best I can do is give them the opportunity.    It took me some time to get there though, this light bulb did not turn on over night! I had to understand and accept that there will be reasons why speech homework isn’t completed: after school activities, too much homework already, family events, they lost it, etc.  So, I decided the best thing I could do for my students was to give them the opportunity to practice their skills and if it didn’t get done, it didn’t get done.

I have gone through lots and lots and lots of different homework sheets and systems. Here are some of my favorites that have worked well for me and hopefully for you…if you want.

1. Speech and Language Homework for a Year

original-389210-1

This has been my favorite tool to use! This homework bundle is so comprehensive it’s crazy. Each week, for 10 months ( a school  year )  there is a homework sheet. Each sheet has 3 different levels so I am able to find something for all kids. I hand had out these sheets to my students at their first or only session of the week.  They have until the following week to turn get the activities done ( which take about 3 minutes ).  Even if they don’t target my kid’s goals exactly, it is still addressing their language growth.  She also has a Social Language Homework for a Year.

2. Summer Homework Packet

original-701951-1

This is a great packet from Natalie Snyders with summer activities to keep those language skills strong!  She also has packs for all the months of the school year and articulation too!

3. Speech and Language Therapy Summer Homework Program

original-237938-1

This is another great packet from Sublime Speech to help prevent regression during the summer. It is set up like a calendar so it is super easy for families to follow and doesn’t take up much their day.

These are just some things I have found. I quick search on TpT will turn up lots more, so take a look and see if there is something out there that may fit your needs.

Now after all this talk about speech homework I am curious. Where do you stand on it?

I give homework, but only once/week. I give them a duotang folder (the kind with 3 brads in it) that is provided by the school, and I put a note in it that that is the only folder I’ll give them. They get the folder at the end of the week and then should bring it back with a parent’s signature the next time I see them. I’ve never had much of a problem with getting the majority of them back…bribery always helps!

I too have used the folder idea, but this year I came up with a ring. The teacher practices with the student at the end of reading group. I place target words on a card at various levels and teachers take their time at the end of group and run through about 10 words. If anyone else has a ring system, please post.

I also give homework, but as a monthly calendar to my elementary kiddos. I encourage completion of the calendar, but the students are not penalized if they don’t bring it back. For those that do, I pass out a small reward. Even if it is only one activity attempted, I am happy. I guess the saying, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” applies here!

Thanks for the love! I also keep track of when I assign it and if they return it. I can use it to tell parents that they need the home practice too!

I give homework once a month, along with a word list containing their speech sounds. I use Speech Activities by Miss Chelsea’s free homework calenders on TPT (SO CUTE!!): https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/January-2015-Articulation-Homework-1615457

I send a note home explaining the importance of homework to the parents and tell them to initial on the days they did the various activities with their child and send it back in to school. When a student brings me their calenders with parent signatures for the week they get an extra sticker on their behavior chart toward prize box. Even though it’s not behavior related it gets them really motivated because they want the prize box 24/7!! Works for me! 🙂

I agree with you, Maureen! I think it is important to provide that opportunity.

I still give homework for students in kindergarten through grade 5. The decision to give homework to 6-8 is done on a more individualized basis. Some of my middle school students feel terribly overwhelmed by their homework already and I don’t want to add to that burden. Others love it and have no problem completing it. I agree, homework is important and I remember this quote from one of my professors in 1982, “Homework is good.” I think that just about sums it up 🙂

Hi Maureen, Love this post, and it is something I am always questioning in my practice. I like to give my kids a weekly “mission” which is not paper-based, but embedded into their week. It might be just a single word to use every time they ask for something, or five repetitions every time they brush their teeth. I find these are achievable, easy and ‘real-life.’ I only tend to give paper-based or structured homework if I have a really eager family, otherwise I know I am just wasting paper. Another great tool that I use is an Australian website called elr.com.au – you can try a demo – you can register and then give kids guest access to play speech games at home – I find these actually get done, unlike other homework. Thanks for the food for thought! Alex.

I looked at some data on this a few years back as part of my personal goal. For my students, for those that consistently completed homework, 100% met their benchmark goals. For those who didn’t consistently complete homework, only 60% met their benchmark goals. I include this data in my beginning of the year letter.

That is really interesting! Thank you for sharing.

Oil Market Report - March 2024

03 March

About this report

The IEA Oil Market Report (OMR) is one of the world's most authoritative and timely sources of data, forecasts and analysis on the global oil market – including detailed statistics and commentary on oil supply, demand, inventories, prices and refining activity, as well as oil trade for IEA and selected non-IEA countries.

  • Global oil demand is forecast to rise by a higher-than-expected 1.7 mb/d in 1Q24 on an improved outlook for the United States and increased bunkering. While 2024 growth has been revised up by 110 kb/d from last month’s Report, the pace of expansion is on track to slow from 2.3 mb/d in 2023 to 1.3 mb/d, as demand growth returns to its historical trend while efficiency gains and EVs reduce use.
  • World oil production is projected to fall by 870 kb/d in 1Q24 vs 4Q23 due to heavy weather-related shut-ins and new curbs from the OPEC+ bloc. From the second quarter, non-OPEC+ is set to dominate gains after some OPEC+ members announced they would extend extra voluntary cuts to support market stability. Global supply for 2024 is forecast to increase 800 kb/d to 102.9 mb/d, including a downward adjustment to OPEC+ output.
  • Refinery crude runs are forecast to rise from a February-low of 81.4 mb/d to a summer peak of 85.6 mb/d in August. For the year as a whole, throughputs are projected to increase by 1.2 mb/d to average 83.5 mb/d, driven by the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Refining margins improved through mid-February before receding, with the US Midcontinent and Gulf Coast as well as Europe leading the gains.
  • Global observed oil inventories surged by 47.1 mb in February. Offshore stocks dominated gains as seaborne exports reached an all-time high and shipping disruptions through the Red Sea tied up significant volumes of oil on water while onshore inventories declined. Global stocks plunged by 48.1 mb in January, with OECD industry stocks at a 16-month low.
  • ICE Brent futures rose by $2/bbl during February as ongoing Houthi shipping attacks in the Red Sea kept a firm bid under crude prices. With oil tankers taking the longer route around Africa more oil was kept on water, further tightening the Atlantic Basin market and sending crude’s forward price structure deeper into backwardation. At the time of writing, Brent was trading at $83/bbl.

Oil on water

Benchmark crude oil prices were range bound in early March, as the market had already priced in the announced extension of OPEC+ voluntary production cuts through 2Q24. North Sea Dated rose by $2.13/bbl to $84.66/bbl during February as continued tanker attacks in the Red Sea lengthened supply routes and global on-land oil inventories fell for a seventh consecutive month to reach their lowest level since at least 2016.

Global onshore oil stocks fell a further 38 mb last month, taking the draw down since July to 180 mb, according to preliminary data. Over the same period, oil on water surged. Trade dislocations from the rerouting of Russian barrels and more recently due to unrest in the Middle East, have boosted oil on water by 115 mb. In February alone, oil on water surged by 85 mb as repeated tanker attacks in the Red Sea diverted more cargoes around the Cape of Good Hope. At nearly 1.9 billion barrels as of end-February, oil on water hit its second highest level since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trade flow disruptions also boosted bunker fuel use. Longer shipping routes and faster vessel speeds saw Singapore bunkering reach all-time highs. That, along with surging US ethane demand for its petrochemical sector underpins a slight upward revision to our global oil demand expectations for this year by 110 kb/d compared with last month’s Report. World oil demand growth is now forecast at 1.3 mb/d in 2024, down sharply from last year’s 2.3 mb/d expansion.

The slowdown in growth, already apparent in recent data, means that oil consumption reverts towards its historical trend after several years of volatility from the post-pandemic rebound. A weaker economic outlook further tempers oil use, as do efficiency improvements and surging electric vehicle sales. Growth will continue to be heavily skewed towards non-OECD countries, even as China’s dominance gradually fades. The latter’s oil demand growth slows from 1.7 mb/d in 2023 to 620 kb/d in 2024, or from roughly three-quarters to half of the global total, under the gathering weight of a challenging economic environment and slower expansion in its petrochemical sector.

As in 2023, non-OPEC+ oil supply growth will eclipse the oil demand expansion by some margin. Led by the United States, non-OPEC+ production is forecast to rise by 1.6 mb/d in 2024 compared to 2.4 mb/d last year when global oil output climbed by 2 mb/d to 102 mb/d. Substantial gains will also come from Guyana, Brazil and Canada, all forecast to pump at record-highs this year. Together, the non-OPEC+ Americas quartet is set to add 1.3 mb/d of new oil production in 2024.

Iran, which last year ranked as the world’s second largest source of supply growth after the United States, is expected to increase production by a further 280 kb/d this year. Output policy for the remainder of the OPEC+ bloc will be revisited when ministers meet in Vienna on 1 June to review market conditions. In this Report, we are now holding OPEC+ voluntary cuts in place through 2024 – unwinding them only when such a move is confirmed by the producer alliance (see OPEC+ cuts extended). On that basis, our balance for the year shifts from a surplus to a slight deficit, but oil tanks may get some relief as the massive volumes of oil on water reach their final destination.

1. Includes extra voluntary curbs where announced. 2. Capacity levels can be reached within 90 days and sustained for an extended period. 3. Excludes shut in Iranian, Russian crude. 4. Angola left OPEC effective 1 Jan 2024. 5. Iran, Libya, Venezuela exempt from cuts. 6. Mexico excluded from OPEC+ compliance. 7. Bahrain, Brunei, Malaysia, Sudan and South Sudan.

Schumer Urges New Leadership in Israel, Calling Netanyahu an Obstacle to Peace

The top Senate Democrat, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the United States, spoke from the Senate floor to condemn Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and call for elections to replace him.

Senator Chuck Schumer among a group of people.

By Annie Karni

Reporting from Washington

  • March 14, 2024

Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, on Thursday delivered a pointed speech on the Senate floor excoriating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel as a major obstacle to peace in the Middle East and calling for new leadership in Israel, five months into the war.

Many Democratic lawmakers have condemned Mr. Netanyahu’s leadership and his right-wing governing coalition, and President Biden has even criticized the Israeli military’s offensive in Gaza as “over the top.” But Mr. Schumer’s speech amounted to the sharpest critique yet from a senior American elected official — effectively urging Israelis to replace Mr. Netanyahu.

“I believe in his heart, his highest priority is the security of Israel,” said Mr. Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the United States. “However, I also believe Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take precedence over the best interests of Israel.”

Mr. Schumer added: “He has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza, which is pushing support for Israel worldwide to historic lows. Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu Has ‘Lost His Way,’ Schumer says

Senator chuck schumer, the majority leader, called the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, a major obstacle to peace in the middle east..

I rise to speak today about about what I believe can and should be the path forward to secure mutual peace and lasting prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians. The fourth major obstacle to peace is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. I have known Prime Minister Netanyahu for a very long time. While we have vehemently disagreed on many occasions, I will always respect his extraordinary bravery for Israel on the battlefield as a younger man. I believe in his heart he has his highest priority is, as is the security of Israel. However, I also believe Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take the precedence over the best interests of Israel. He has put himself in coalition with far right, far-right extremists like Minister Smotrich and Ben-Gvir. And as a result, he has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza, which is pushing support for Israel worldwide to historic lows. Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah. As a lifelong supporter of Israel, it has become clear to me. The Netanyahu coalition no longer fits the needs of Israel after Oct. 7. The world has changed radically since then, and the Israeli people are being stifled right now by a governing vision that is stuck in the past.

The speech was the latest reflection of the growing dissatisfaction among Democrats, particularly progressives, with Israel’s conduct of the war and its toll on Palestinian civilians, which has created a strategic and political dilemma for Mr. Biden. Republicans have tried to capitalize on that dynamic for electoral advantage, hugging Mr. Netanyahu closer as Democrats repudiate him. And on Thursday, they lashed out at Mr. Schumer for his remarks.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader, said on the Senate floor that it was “grotesque and hypocritical” for Americans “who hyperventilate about foreign interference in our own democracy to call for the removal of the democratically elected leader of Israel.” He called Mr. Schumer’s move “unprecedented.”

“The Democratic Party doesn’t have an anti-Bibi problem,” Mr. McConnell said, referring to Mr. Netanyahu by his nickname. “It has an anti-Israel problem.”

Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, called Mr. Schumer’s remarks “earth-shatteringly bad” and accused him of “calling on the people of Israel to overthrow their government.” And House Republicans, gathered in West Virginia for a party retreat, hastily called a news conference to attack Mr. Schumer for his comments and position themselves as the true friends of Israel in Congress.

Mr. Schumer’s remarks came a day after Senate Republicans invited Mr. Netanyahu to speak as their special guest at a party retreat in Washington. Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, the No. 3 Republican, asked Mr. Netanyahu to address Republicans virtually, but he could not appear because of a last-minute scheduling conflict. Ambassador Michael Herzog, Israel’s envoy to the United States, spoke in his place and also addressed the House G.O.P. gathering on Thursday.

In his speech at the Capitol, Mr. Schumer, who represents a state with more than 20 percent of the country’s Jewish population, was careful to assert that he was not trying to dictate any electoral outcome in Israel. He prefaced his harsh criticism of Mr. Netanyahu with a long defense of the country, which he said American Jews “love in our bones.”

Mr. Schumer said there had been an “inaccurate perception” of the war that lays too much blame on Israel for civilian deaths in Gaza without focusing enough on how Hamas uses Palestinian civilians as human shields. And he acknowledged how difficult it was for traumatized Israelis to contemplate the possibility of a two-state solution at this time.

But he was unsparing in his criticism of Mr. Netanyahu, calling the prime minister one of the top obstacles to achieving peace in the Middle East, along with Hamas, “radical right-wing Israelis” and Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, who he also said should be replaced.

“The Netanyahu coalition no longer fits the needs of Israel after Oct. 7,” Mr. Schumer said, referring to the day of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. “The world has changed — radically — since then, and the Israeli people are being stifled right now by a governing vision that is stuck in the past.”

Mr. Schumer said the only solution to the decades-old conflict was a two-state solution: “a demilitarized Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in equal measures of peace, security, prosperity and dignity.” He said Mr. Netanyahu, who has rejected the idea of Palestinian statehood, was jeopardizing Israel’s future.

“At this critical juncture, I believe a new election is the only way to allow for a healthy and open decision-making process about the future of Israel, at a time when so many Israelis have lost their confidence in the vision and direction of their government,” Mr. Schumer said, adding that he believed a majority of the Israeli public “will recognize the need for change.”

“As a democracy, Israel has the right to choose its own leaders, and we should let the chips fall where they may,” he said. “But the important thing is that Israelis are given a choice. There needs to be a fresh debate about the future of Israel after Oct. 7.”

Mr. Schumer gave White House officials advance notice that he would be making the speech.

“We fully respect his right to make those remarks and to decide for himself what he’s going to say on the Senate floor,” said John F. Kirby, a White House spokesman. “He obviously feels strongly about this. We understand and respect that. This wasn’t about approval or disapproval or anything in any way, but he did give us a heads-up that he was going to do it.”

Mr. Schumer’s speech was the second time since Oct. 7 that he has taken to the Senate floor to address the Israeli-Hamas war. The conflict has prompted him to think more deeply and speak more openly about his Jewish faith and heritage, as well as the moral and political dilemmas the war has presented for Jews in Israel and the United States.

In November, Mr. Schumer made a deeply personal speech condemning the rise of antisemitism in America that has flared since Israel began retaliating against Hamas for its attack. Those remarks appeared to be mostly directed at members of his own party; he warned that some liberals and young people were “unknowingly aiding and abetting” antisemitism in the name of social justice. Mr. Schumer has since spoken to publishers about writing a book on antisemitism.

On Thursday, his speech was aimed squarely at Mr. Netanyahu and far-right members of his governing coalition, who Mr. Schumer said were falling short of Jewish values.

Mr. Herzog had a stern response. “Israel is a sovereign democracy,” he wrote on social media. “It is unhelpful, all the more so as Israel is at war against the genocidal terror organization Hamas, to comment on the domestic political scene of a democratic ally.”

In his remarks, Mr. Schumer said that Mr. Netanyahu refused to “disavow Ministers Smotrich and Ben-Gvir and their calls for Israelis to drive Palestinians out of Gaza and the West Bank.”

“He won’t commit to a military operation in Rafah that prioritizes protecting civilian life,” Mr. Schumer said. “He won’t engage responsibly in discussions about a ‘day after’ plan for Gaza, and a longer-term pathway to peace.”

Mr. Schumer said that if Mr. Netanyahu and his current coalition remained in power, “then the United States will have no choice but to play a more active role in shaping Israeli policy by using our leverage to change the present course.”

Underscoring how contentious the issue of Israel is in American politics, Mr. Schumer’s speech was criticized by both the right and the left.

Layla Elabed, the campaign manager for Listen to Michigan, an antiwar group of activists who voted “uncommitted” in the state’s Democratic presidential primary, said that “Senator Schumer is beginning to shift but far too slowly and with little substance for what actions Biden can take now to stop the outrageous civilian death toll in Gaza.”

Nicholas Fandos and Peter Baker contributed reporting.

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

Russia and China vetoed  a U.S. resolution at the U.N.Security Council that called for “an immediate and sustained cease-fire”  as part of a deal in Gaza. The United States had vetoed three previous resolutions  demanding a stop to fighting.

Since the start of the war, President Biden has tried to influence Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel behind the scenes. As tension rises over what is next in the conflict, some say it is time for a different approach .

The Israeli military said that it had killed several people it described as terrorists  during a raid at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, one of Israel’s longest and deadliest such operations since the start of the war.

A Power Vacuum: Since the start of the war, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has done little to address the power vacuum that would appear after Israeli forces leave Gaza. The risks of inaction are already apparent in Gaza City .

Chuck Schumer’s Speech:  Speaking to the U.S. Senate, the majority leader and highest-ranking Jewish official in the United States branded Netanyahu a major impediment to peace. In an interview, he explained why he felt obligated  to call for new leadership in Israel.

A Tough Balancing Act: Israel has been noticeably out of step with Western nations when it comes to relations with Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. That approach reflects unique security needs that have gained new relevance  since the start of the war in Gaza.

A Struggle for Life’s Basics: Most of Gaza’s population fled to the southern territory of Rafah , hoping to escape the war. As they hunt for food and shelter, a potential Israeli invasion has added to their fears.

Tasmanian election results show an uncertain future ahead for the state but the Liberals are crowing that they've won

Analysis Tasmanian election results show an uncertain future ahead for the state but the Liberals are crowing that they've won

Jeremy Rockliff gestures on stage.

Political parties that suffer a big drop in their vote and are on track to fall at least three seats short of a majority don't often claim victory.

But on Saturday night, that's exactly what Premier Jeremy Rockliff did.

With experts pencilling in just 12 seats for the Liberals when he took to the stage at the tally room on Saturday night, Mr Rockliff said his party had secured a fourth consecutive election win.

His delivery lacked conviction, but his words were decisive. The Liberals had won, and Labor had lost.

And he'd be seeking to form a government that gave "Tasmanians the certainty and the stability that they deserve, and to deliver our 2030 strong plan for Tasmania's future."

Journalists furiously sent and received text messages wondering if he'd read the 2021 election results by mistake.

But what the 2024 election results show is the Liberals have 36.7 per cent of the statewide vote, a swing of 12 per cent against them compared to last election.

ABC chief election analyst Antony Green predicts they'll win at least 12 seats, maybe 15 in a best-case scenario.

Whichever way you slice it, it's not the clear win Mr Rockliff's speech would have had Tasmanians believe.

To quote one follower on Mr Rockliff's Facebook page: "Called it for yourself with only 12 seats gained and 11 still in the air. You're a farmer, you should know not to count your chickens before your eggs hatch."

The second speech, from Labor leader Rebecca White, was equally as confusing.

Despite her party only winning 29.1 per cent of the vote, and on track to claim just 10 or 11 seats, she didn't concede defeat.

In fact, she said voters had "rejected the past and want change".

Her speech seemed like a pitch to the minor party and independent MPs who will make up the next parliament about why they should help Labor to form a government, instead of the Liberals.

Pointing out the premier had called the election because he could no longer work with Liberal-turned-independents John Tucker and Lara Alexander, Ms White publicly questioned how Mr Rockliff would manage minority a second time around.

"Dealing with a crossbench the size the Tasmanian community looks to have returned in this election will be a very difficult task for them to manage with respect," she said.

"Because respect requires an honest appreciation that the voters cannot be sent back to do it again and that each member of the crossbench represents a constituency that has to be listened to.

"Humble people don't speak of a coalition of chaos whenever they don't get their own way. Or claim a victory when the results aren't clear."

Could Ms White actually form government? She definitely left the door open in her speech.

"We will wait to see how the dust settles and for the final results to be determined and Labor will be ready to work with the parliament to implement our agenda and our plan for a better future for Tasmania if that is the will of the people," she said.

It was a much more positive, and pointed, speech than you'd expect from a party, which pitted against a decade-old government wracked by instability, only won 29.2 per cent of the primary vote, just a 1 per cent increase on the 2021 election.

Here's what we know

In summary, neither major party conceded, and both claimed the other one lost, despite winning an unsatisfactory number of seats themselves.

It'll take weeks to declare the exact make-up of the parliament, and maybe even longer to work out who forms the next government.

But on a night of chaos and uncertainty, here are some things we know for sure.

There'll be a big crossbench, but John Tucker and Lara Alexander won't be part of it, having failed to win back their seats.

Former Liberal senator Eric Abetz and media personality Rob Fairs will enter state parliament as Liberal MPs. Former Liberal minister Jacquie Petrusma's political return has been successful, as has upper house MP Jane Howlett's move downstairs.

We also know that soul searching in the Liberal Party will begin almost immediately, with Mr Abetz telling the ABC's election panel that multiple party policies should be reviewed, including plans to allow pets in rentals, and apply a visitor levy on short-stay accommodation.

And on a night where both major parties fell short of expectations, the Greens look to be the big winners.

Rosalie Woodruff's team will grow from two MPs to at least four.

And she made clear in her speech that she's happy to work with whoever wants to form government.

Tasmanians will be hoping a chaotic election night isn't an omen for the next four years.

And that they won't have to wait too long to find out what happens next.

The Fed is meeting today. Here's what experts are saying about the odds of a rate cut.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter, Alex Sundby

Updated on: March 20, 2024 / 3:22 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: The Fed left its benchmark interest rate unchanged .

Americans are bearing the financial burden of higher costs for every type of loan , from mortgages to credit cards, after two years of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. With the central bank meeting today, economists and consumers alike have one question on their minds: When will the central bank start cutting rates?

The answer: Almost certainly not this month, and probably not at its next meeting, according to Wall Street forecasters.

Most economists polled by financial data company FactSet think the Fed will keep its benchmark rate steady on Wednesday, as well as at its following meeting on May 1. Consumers holding out for lower borrowing costs may have to wait until the following month for relief, with about half of economists now penciling in the Fed's June 12 meeting for the first cut in four years, FactSet data shows.

The Fed kicked off its flurry of rate hikes in March 2022 as inflation soared during the pandemic, reaching a 40-year high in June of that year. Although inflation has rapidly cooled since then, it remains higher than the Fed would like, which is why economists believe the central bank will keep rates steady this week.

That doesn't mean that the Fed won't say anything noteworthy. Experts said the Fed's latest economic outlook could provide hints about when rate relief might be in the cards.

"The Fed is going to be taking a lot of the oxygen out of the room this week as they conclude their March meeting on Wednesday afternoon," said Sam Millete, director of fixed income at Commonwealth Financial Network, in an email. "We've seen some mixed economic data to start the year. It's going to be interesting to see how the Fed reacts to that, especially in Fed Chair Jerome Powell's post-meeting press conference."

Here's what to know about Wednesday's Fed meeting and what it means for your money.

When is the Fed meeting this week?

The Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee meets on March 19-20. The rate-setting panel will announce its rate decision at 2 p.m. Eastern time on March 20.

Chairman Jerome Powell will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss the FOMC's rate decision and provide information on the central bank's outlook.

When and by how much will the Fed cut interest rates?

The Fed on Wednesday is expected to maintain the federal funds rate in a range of 5.25% to 5.5%.

The question is whether the central bank might provide guidance about the expected timing of what would mark the first rate cut since March 2020, when the economy was in free fall due to the pandemic, prompting the Fed to slash borrowing costs to buoy the economy.

On Wednesday, analysts expect Powell to reiterate that the Fed wants to see continued improvement in its battle against inflation before cutting rates.

"The Fed will keep their forward guidance unchanged while stressing that they need further evidence that inflation is on a sustainable path toward their 2% target before cutting interest rates," Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist with Oxford Economics, told investors on Monday in a report.

Economists still think the Fed could cut rates several times in 2024, although some economists are now projecting fewer reductions than they had forecast earlier. For instance, Goldman Sachs on Monday said it is penciling in three cuts in 2024, down from its earlier forecast for four cuts this year.

That change is "mainly because inflation has been a bit firmer than we expected," Goldman Sachs economists said in a research note.

What is the inflation rate in 2024?

In February, consumer prices rose  3.2% on an annual basis , faster than January's 3.1% pace and well above the 2% target sought by the Fed.

To be sure, inflation has cooled considerably after touching a four-decade peak of 9.1% in June 2022, but it remains higher than its pre-pandemic levels of about 2% and represents one reason why economists believe the Fed will push back rate cuts until at least June.

If inflation is down, why isn't the Fed cutting rates?

Powell has repeatedly noted that cutting rates too soon could spark a resurgence of inflation, causing more financial pain for consumers and businesses.

"The Fed does not want to repeat the same mistake made in the 1970s by declaring that they have conquered inflation too soon, only to have it reemerge," said Villanova University economics professor Victor Li, a former senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, in an email.

He added, "But the Fed knows they can sabotage the soft landing that they created by holding rates too high for too long and causing a recession."

The good news, said LendingTree economist Jacob Channel, is that the Fed also isn't likely to raise rates even with  inflation cooling less quickly than investors had hoped and amid signs that economic growth remains robust.

"Fortunately, while cuts might still be a few months (or more) off, it doesn't look like the Fed is going to raise rates again anytime soon," Channel said in an email. "We'd need to see inflation growth pick up far more steam that it currently has before the Fed starts seriously considering more hikes."

How will the Fed's rate decision affect your money?

If the Fed keeps its benchmark rate steady on Wednesday, borrowing costs will remain high, impacting everything from credit card rates to loans for auto purchases or homes , experts say. Credit card APRs, for instance, are at their highest levels since the Fed started tracking them in 1994, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

There is a one upside to elevated interest rates: Savers can get robust returns by parking their money in high-yield savings accounts or CDs .

"Some of the highest CD rates are found in shorter-terms right now, so they remain accessible if you need access to the cash in 6 months or one year's time," noted Elizabeth Renter, data analyst at NerdWallet, in an email.
