Bachelor’s Essay Student Workflow

Honors College

This workflow is designed to provide you with a workflow process to follow as you plan your senior thesis (the bachelor’s essay). This is a six-credit project completed over two semesters (the six hours of credit assumes that the student completes approximately 10 hours of engagement in the project per week).  It should be a project that reflects the scholarly and/or creative work of the discipline.

We strongly advise you to approach a faculty advisor at least one semester before their project is scheduled to begin.  You should bring a short (one page) project description accompanied by a bibliography/list of materials to the meeting.  Ideally, every one of you will register for the project through the departmental 499A/B (e.g., PSYC 499A/B, BIOL 448A/B, 498A/B, 499A/B). However, in cases where a project is interdisciplinary or where the student would like to complete a project outside of the major, you can register for the BE using the 499A/B number of the faculty leading your project.  In exceptional circumstances students may use the HONS 499A/B number, but his should be a last resort.

Remember, faculty do not get paid for directing senior theses.  Therefore, it is vital to approach someone with whom you have an existing relationship in a timely manner to demonstrate that you are serious about the project.  Most departments also have guidelines about how many students faculty members should supervise, as well as policies about how to manage bachelor essay proposals. In all cases, the Honors College supports these departmental standards.

The directions below are designed to give you a workflow process to help you compartmentalize things.

1. Check with your department to see if there is an official application process for the BE. Some departments (like English and History) require students to write a proposal, while others simply require the approval of the department chair.  Any departmental processes must be completed before you begin the individual enrollment form.

2. This next step is the most important of all; choosing a faculty member to lead your project. Our advice is to (1) approach someone you already know whose (2) research specialty is related to your project.  By approaching an advisor early with a written proposal, you greatly increase the chances that they will say yes.

3. Complete the individual enrollment form for the BE. Your advisor must complete this step for you; only faculty have access to this form on the CofC internal HUB.  It contains instructions for the supporting information that must be submitted with your application.   You must attach a completed syllabus with specific learning outcomes.

4. The deadline for individual enrollment courses is usually about three weeks into the semester. If you were signing up a student to begin the BE in the fall, for example, you would need to have everything done by the end of the first week in September.

5. You and your advisor will need to set up a regular schedule of meetings in order to monitor progress. What this schedule looks like will depend on your discipline and the nature of the project.

6. ADDENDUM: off-campus projects. Many students use research they have done off-campus (at MUSC, for example) as their BE project.  If you are in this situation, the registration process is slightly different.  You may work with a non-CofC faculty member, but you must identify a CofC faculty member in the same field to physically sign you up for the 6 credits of senior thesis.  This requires you to do a bit of triangulation between your two advisors.  The “on-site” advisor is actually leading your project and doing the grading, but the “CofC” advisor has to help you complete the paperwork and enter the grades for you.

8 do’s and don’ts of college admissions essays.

college of charleston essay questions

READ: Check out an updated essay-tips article here.

With deadlines fast approaching – scholarship (Dec. 1) and regular notification (Feb. 1) – College of Charleston admissions counselors have a few tips for your admissions essays:

Don’t: Let the essay overwhelm you

The admissions essay is an important part of your application, but it’s not going to make or break you. Don’t spend so much time and energy on your essay that you miss college application deadlines. Deadlines are pervasive in college and well beyond graduation. Admissions counselors want to see that you can meet them.

Do: Use spellcheck and grammar check

When essays are submitted with obvious errors it shows carelessness – not what you want to portray through your admissions portfolio.

Don’t: Submit an incorrectly formatted essay

Thoughtful experimentation is one thing, but your essay should reflect what you know; you should know how to properly format a formal essay.

EXPLORE: Learn about the admissions process at the College of Charleston

Do: have a teacher proofread it.

Teacher or guidance counselor—it doesn’t really matter as long as they’re not related to you. Family members might infer subtleties outsiders won’t and you need to be sure any reader will understand your message.

Do: Make it personal

You’ll hear about subjects you should “never” write about, but we want to learn about you as a person and as a student. If one of those taboo subjects has impacted your development, write about it. If you feel like you can own the topic and justify its relevance then it’s appropriate to write about.

Don’t: Use gimmicks

Unless you’re getting at something that will jump off the page immediately, don’t use text messaging shorthand or send a blank piece of paper to represent the greatest risk you’ve ever taken. Let your story and your writing – not a clever ploy – speak for you.

READ: Explore the College in Spanish

Do: take advantage of the personal statement option (if offered).

Use the primary essay to talk about yourself, but write a secondary personal statement if there’s something you feel warrants further explanation – a poor grade or no higher-level language after junior year, for example.

Don’t: Make excuses

If you earned a bad grade or stopped taking language courses because you were lazy, don’t go out of your way to blame external factors. Conversely, if you discovered you have a learning disability or your school didn’t offer higher-level language courses, explain it in your personal statement.

Bachelor's Essay in Neuroscience

  • Advising FAQ
  • Student Opportunities

Many neuroscience students choose to complete a Bachelor’s Essay in Neuroscience (BIOL/PSYC 448), a two-semester independent research course that counts towards the research requirement of the neuroscience minor.

To enroll in a Bachelor's Essay, you first need to identify a mentor.  In the Neuroscience Program, Bachelor’s Essay research must be conducted with a CofC Neuroscience Program faculty member  or with a faculty member at MUSC, and the research must be related to the field of neuroscience. You should reach out to potential mentors early in the minor--do not wait until the fall of your senior year!

Once you have connected with a mentor, you will need to enroll.  The Bachelor's Essay is an individual enrollment course, which means you cannot simply sign up for it in the manner that you register for regular classes.  To enroll, you must do the following:

  • Develop a strong intellectual foundation in research by reading the primary research literature and acquire knowledge of advanced principles of neuroscience research through these readings.
  • Acquire proficiency in specialized neuroscience techniques and apply knowledge of molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience gained from the core neuroscience courses to their research and/or written thesis.
  • Develop competence in data collection, interpretation, and evaluation of neuroscience research, and engage in activities that foster critical thinking skills about research.
  • Promote the development of professional and technical written communication skills.
  • Obtain the approval of the Neuroscience program director by completing and submitting the Neuroscience Bachelor's Essay approval form. You can obtain this form from any CofC neuroscience faculty member.
  • Complete and submit the departmental Individual Enrollment form. Check with the relevant department (usually PSYC or BIOL) to obtain this form. Note that the department might have separate requirements for the Bachelor's Essay--check with a Neuroscience faculty member in the relevant department. If you are conducting your research at MUSC, you need a CofC faculty member to be the faculty member of record (since MUSC faculty cannot submit grades, etc.) Typically this is the Neuroscience program director.
  • Complete all of these steps by the deadline for individual enrollment (see the Registrar's Office calendar for the specific date).

Note: Grades for both semesters of the Bachelor’s Essay in Neuroscience will be given after submission of the final draft of the written component in the second semester.  A grade of “IP” (in progress) is submitted after the first semester.

Contact the Neuroscience Program Director or talk with a CofC Neuroscience faculty member if you have questions about this process.  If you are working with someone at MUSC, they are unlikely to be familiar with this process.

Common Supplemental Essay Topics

college of charleston essay questions

Most students using the Common App are aware that they’ll have to write a personal statement. But that’s not the only essay you’ll need to write! Many schools on the Common App will require (or strongly encourage) you to write supplemental essays that are specific to their application. It’s crucial that you give the same time and attention to these supplemental essays.

It’s a good idea to look ahead to find the supplemental essay questions asked by the schools on your list. When you add a school to your colleges on the Common App, the supplemental essay questions will be included. But do make a note that they don’t always appear clearly in a separate section called “Writing Supplement.” Sometimes, you’ll find substantive essay prompts in other sections like “Academics.” This is especially true if you are applying to a particular school or major within the college you’re applying to. Going through each school on your list in advance will help you avoid any unpleasant last-minute surprises!

Some types of supplemental essay questions show up frequently, and you can often talk about the same idea or experience while tailoring it to slightly different prompts. The prompts will vary in the way they’re phrased and in word length. Once you know what the supplemental essay prompts are for your chosen colleges, you can begin to think about how to respond most effectively to each one.

Here are the three most common supplemental essay topics and some advice about how to approach them:

Why this college?

There are several different ways colleges can ask students a version of the “Why this college?” question. So, the first thing you’ll need to do is read the prompt! Some versions are very open-ended, while others ask you to focus on one area like academics. You need to make sure you’re answering the specific question being asked; if they want to know why you chose your major, don’t tell them how excited you are to cheer for the football team. Take a look at some of these different ways of asking “Why this college?”

  • Why Bard? (250 words)
  • Many students apply to the College of Charleston based on our location, size, reputation, and the beauty of our campus (temperate year-round weather also comes up frequently). While these are all important considerations in choosing a college, why is the College of Charleston a particularly good match for you? (750 words)
  • Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (Required for all applicants; minimum 100 words/maximum 550 words)
  • Why do you want to study your chosen major specifically at Georgia Tech? (300 words)

In terms of helpful advice for addressing the “why this college?” prompt, look back at the second on the list, from the College of Charleston. Notice that they have already told you the kind of information that’s less likely to be helpful in your response—the size of the school, weather, geography, etc. That’s because none of those factors really distinguish the College of Charleston from schools of similar size and location. When you approach a “why this college” question, you should really be asking yourself, “why this college and not another ?”

This is where your own research into the school becomes essential. You need specific information about each school’s resources (beyond what’s found on the landing page of the website). Once you know what the school has to offer, connect their resources to your interests and make it personal. The colleges already know what resources they have, so it’s not enough to list them; you need to tell them why they matter to you .

Extracurricular Activity

Another common supplemental essay prompt asks you to reflect on an extracurricular activity you’re involved in. While many schools will ask a similar question, the level of detail and reflection they call for can vary dramatically. Take a look at these prompts from Tulane and Vanderbilt:

  • Tulane: Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (Minimum 20/Maximum 250)
  • Vanderbilt offers a community where students find balance between their academic and social experiences. Please briefly elaborate on how one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences has influenced you. (200-400 words)

These prompts are remarkably similar in asking about extracurricular or work experiences, but Vanderbilt’s maximum word limit is nearly twice as long as Tulane’s. This might signal that Vanderbilt wants a bit more depth and detail in your response.

When you’re composing your response, think beyond the activity itself. What did you do when you were involved with this activity? What problems did you solve, what impact did you have on the community participating in this activity with you? What skills did you learn, and how have you applied those skills in other areas of your life? Use the response as a space to give the admissions committee more information about what’s important to you. No matter the length of the response, avoid merely describing the activity (most likely, you will have already done this in either your Activities section, your resumé, or both). Make the best use of the space and give your reader some new insight into who you are.

The last type of supplemental essay prompt we want to highlight is about community. Like the others, this topic can be given a few different spins. In its most general form, the community essay looks like this:

  • Yale: Reflect on your membership in a community. Why is your involvement important to you? How has it shaped you? You may define community however you like. (400 words or fewer)
  • At MIT, we bring people together to better the lives of others. MIT students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the world’s biggest challenges to being a good friend. Describe one way in which you have contributed to your community, whether in your family, the classroom, your neighborhood, etc. (200-250 words)

When thinking about how to answer this question, it helps to start by simply making a list of communities you’re a part of. There are many ways to define “community,” and you may find you can give a deeper and more thoughtful response by not going for the most obvious choices. Your school or home communities might come immediately to mind, but remember that communities can also be forged around a common place, activity, shared experience, or interest.

As with the other questions, keep the focus on yourself when you respond to this prompt. How has your community influenced you (think values, interests, goals, personality)? How have you contributed to your community (think helping a friend, having a difficult but important conversation, stepping up as a leader, bringing a new perspective)? It’s important that the reader come away with a sense of who you are in the context of this community and not just a description of the community.

Sometimes you’ll see a more pointed version of the community essay that asks you to describe how you handle conflict. Examples of this kind of question include:

  • Brown’s culture fosters a community in which students challenge the ideas of others and have their ideas challenged in return, promoting a deeper and clearer understanding of the complex issues confronting society. This active engagement in dialogue is as present outside the classroom as it is in academic spaces. Tell us about a time you were challenged by a perspective that differed from your own. How did you respond? (200-250 words)
  • At Princeton, we value diverse perspectives and the ability to have respectful dialogue about difficult issues. Share a time when you had a conversation with a person or a group of people about a difficult topic. What insight did you gain, and how would you incorporate that knowledge into your thinking in the future? (250 words)

These types of questions present yet another opportunity to demonstrate to the school the kind of person you are. When generating ideas for this kind of prompt, think of instances of conflict or difference you’ve encountered, and be honest about how you dealt with them. There’s no need to fabricate a happy outcome (although it’s fine if your conflict ended well!). The important thing is that you articulate how the conflict changed you: what you learned from the experience, and how it will shape your thinking going forward.

As you work through your supplemental essays, remember that there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. You most likely already have all of the information, reflection, and insight needed to write effective supplements—it’s just a matter of writing them down. If you can craft a few clear, compelling essays, you can adjust those essays to fit specific prompts and move through this section of your application process with confidence.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

College of Charleston hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to College of Charleston will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

College of Charleston SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1214

The average SAT score composite at College of Charleston is a 1214 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes College of Charleston Competitive for SAT test scores.

image description

College of Charleston SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1140, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1290. In other words, a 1140 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1290 will move you up to above average .

Here's the breakdown of SAT scores by section:

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

College of Charleston has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Section."

This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit .

Click below to learn more about how superscoring critically affects your test strategy.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, College of Charleston will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and College of Charleston forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1140, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

College of Charleston ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, College of Charleston likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 25

The average ACT score at College of Charleston is 25. This score makes College of Charleston Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

image description

The 25th percentile ACT score is 24, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 30.

Even though College of Charleston likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 24 or below, you'll have a harder time getting in, unless you have something else impressive in your application.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 24 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to College of Charleston, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 24.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

College of Charleston considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is lightly selective, you have a great shot at getting in, as long as you don't fall well below average . Aim for a 1140 SAT or a 24 ACT or higher, and you'll almost certainly get an offer of admission. As long as you meet the rest of the application requirements below, you'll be a shoo-in.

But if you score below our recommended target score, you may be one of the very few unlucky people to get rejected.

Admissions Calculator

Here's our custom admissions calculator. Plug in your numbers to see what your chances of getting in are. Pick your test: SAT ACT

  • 80-100%: Safety school: Strong chance of getting in
  • 50-80%: More likely than not getting in
  • 20-50%: Lower but still good chance of getting in
  • 5-20%: Reach school: Unlikely to get in, but still have a shot
  • 0-5%: Hard reach school: Very difficult to get in

Body of missing Charleston man found, authorities confirm

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that the body of a man reported missing by family members on Sunday has been found.

The body of Zachary Elder Lewis, 31, was found on Shutes Folly Island at approximately 2:35 p.m. on Monday, Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said.

The Charleston Police Department’s Harbor Patrol Unit responded to a report of the discovery Monday afternoon, Sgt. Anthony Gibson said.

O’Neal said the coroner’s office completed a forensic autopsy and the cause of death was currently pending additional tests and further investigation.

Police said there are currently no indications of foul play.

Police said on Monday that Lewis left a home on Ashley Avenue around 2 a.m. Sunday and has not been seen since.

yann fercot commercial nautisme marine west

» On reste figés.

On adhère.

Quant à Musso, la comparaison citée me suffit.

The Laser 28 is simply one of the best Bruce Farr designed racer/cruisers. She has the performance of a much larger boat and a hull shape that will allow her to plane in the right conditions. Fast and easy to handle, the design has a clean workable deck layout with all halyards leading aft. An excellent light air sailor, the functional open plan interior offers sleeping accommodation for 5, with an enclosed head,  galley, and a large walk-in wet locker located aft that is rarely seen in boats of this size. There is an active fleet of local Laser 28’s, some of whom are dry sailed, that would love to see another racer out on the course. This boat comes with a full sail inventory: 2 mainsails, 3 genoas, 2 jibs and 2 spinnakers. Contact Sonia Telford at 604-315-7157 for an appointment to view.

Broker's Comments

Here we have an honest Laser 28 that is extremely well equipped for racing, with lots of amazing racing, nav and sailing gear.

She's had some expensive work done this year, to ensure and would suit a racing sailor, or group of racing friends or, equally, she may suit a couple or small family who'd like to go sailing in a very well equipped boat.

Her engine, though refurbished this year, needs a job doing, assessed by the attending engineer as "alternator has overcharged causing the loom to overheat and melt the insulation, this has in turn grounded the charging cable to earth and put a large load on the engine causing the engine power loss you experienced."

These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Cost of ownership.

It should be borne in mind that some of the low numbers are a result of a single boat being sailed by an exceptional sailor and it is highly unlikely that an average club sailor could sail to these numbers. A case in point is the 117 that our Rep. O.J.Young in Houston has been given. O.J. is not your average sailor having won SORC, the J24 Mid Winters, and a host of other championships too numerous to mention. In his first outings in the Laser 28 he won the Clear Lake R.A. December Series and tied for first in the Houston Y.C. Turkey Day. I am confident however, that over a season the Laser 28 cannot sail to this number. An educated guess after sailing the prototypes and the production boat for four years is that the boat will eventually settle down with a 1 26. (Note: Just before printing, the Galveston Bay Cruising Association raised the Laser 28 to 120.) News Snippets from Around the Country

Robert Dunkley of Nassau, Bahamas, took delivery of his boat on Saturday morning in Ft. Lauderdale, put the sail up and sailed straight to Nassau with two friends. (That’s putting a lot of pressure on your builder, Robert!) They sailed through 30 knot north winds in the Gulf Stream with 10-15 foot waves. When asked if there were any problems, two surfaced: the Compass gimbal had been broken in transit from Montreal and when they arrived in Nassau “the rigging was slack”! (This would be normal after the first few times of even normal sailing as all toggles, shroud attachment recess, etc., bed in.) Please, don’t anyone else do that!

Judy and Frank Button from Vancouver sailed their Laser 28 to a fourth straight win in the IYC winter series. Judy, the skipper, has only been racing two years having raced their Tanzer 7.5 for the first two years. Boats in the fleet include: Dash 34, C & C 33, C & C 34, Mirage 33, Reliant 37. Frank and Judy are moving back east to Grimsby, Ontario and plan on attending the Quebec Open in June.

Paul Kaplan, well known sailor on San Francisco Bay and our Rep for that area, singlehanding his Laser 28 on only its fourth outing sailed to a first in class and first overall in a 38 boat fleet in San Francisco’s Singlehanded Sailing Society’s “Three Bridge Fiasco Race”. Paul’s only comment "The boat is outstanding!" His wife, Chris, meanwhile, sailed the Laser 28 with an all girl crew to third overall in their Women’s Racing Association winter series.

Nearly 50 percent of the boats sold so far have been sold with trailers. At $2,450 US or $3,000 Can. the trailer pays for itself quickly, especially if the owner picks up his own boat. Add to this the saving of a yard cradle and the ability to store the boat on one’s own property or in some other non-revenue location and it pays for itself in a couple of years.

The Laser 28 is the only true one-design racer/cruiser on the water today. It is the only racing/cruising class with one design sails where the test is not going to be who has the latest cut, but rather who is the best sailor. The sails were developed over five years by Hans Fogh of North Sails, Olympic Medalist and World Champion, working hand in hand with Bruce Farr and myself as we slowly perfected the rig. Not only are they perfectly cut for the Laser 28’s simple, lightly tensioned rig, they use cloth materials selected to last for the longest possible time (one of the final prototype mains is going into its fourth season). Thirty, identical Laser 28’s at CORK with identical sails will be a first in yachting. (The IOD is the only other keel boat to our knowledge that has one-design sails but it does not qualify as a cruising boat.) Good sailing! Ian Bruce

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Pushing back on DEI ‘orthodoxy’

Panelists support diversity efforts but worry that current model is too narrow, denying institutions the benefit of other voices, ideas

Nikki Rojas

Harvard Staff Writer

It’s time to take a harder look at the role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in higher education.

That was the overall theme of a searing panel discussion at Smith Campus Center on Thursday. Titled “Academic Freedom, DEI, & the Future of Higher Education,” the event featured scholars specializing in law, history, politics, and diversity.

“The power of diversity for learning is irreplaceable,” said panelist Amna Khalid, associate professor of history at Carleton College in Minnesota. “It is incredible, and it is a value that I strongly believe in as someone who is the product of various educational systems.”

However, Khalid shared that she often finds herself at odds with the approach DEI practitioners take in higher education — an approach she termed “DEI Inc.”

Khalid wrote an opinion piece with Carlton colleague Jeffrey Aaron Snyder last year for the Chronicle of Higher Education. The essay, titled “ Yes, DEI Can Erode Academic Freedom. Let’s Not Pretend Otherwise ,” argues that under the logic of the prevailing DEI model, “Education is a product, students are consumers, and campus diversity is a customer-service issue that needs to be administered from the top down.”

All too often, Khalid said at the event, practitioners implement a “model underscored by a notion of harm and that students somehow need to be protected from harm.”

Jeannie Suk Gersen, John H. Watson, Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, agreed with that assessment and said that people who object to DEI do not often equate it to the idea of diversity.

“It’s, in fact, a set of ideas that have become very narrowed to one specific orthodoxy about what diversity means, what equity and inclusion mean, so that it shuts out a whole bunch of other ideas about what diversity, equity, and inclusion may be,” Suk Gersen said.

The lone voice to advocate for a professionalized and accountable DEI workforce was Stacy Hawkins, a Rutgers University law professor and scholar of DEI.

“Perhaps it’s simply just the introduction of diversity into our institutions that’s going to create discomfort — that’s going to make it harder to have the same conversations, to do the same things, to say and behave in the same ways that we used to,” said Hawkins, who underscored the challenge of welcoming diverse students without diverse faculty. “But that doesn’t mean that it’s not a worthwhile exercise to try.”

Panelists also fielded questions on academic freedom and free speech, and whether DEI infringes on those rights.

DEI is “almost always wrong in the sense that it subverts classical liberal principles of the academic mission of open inquiry, truth seeking, knowledge creation, research, and debating ideas,” responded panelist Ilya Shapiro, senior fellow and director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute.

He went on to quote Hanna Holborn Gray, former president of the University of Chicago, who once said: “Education should not be intended to make people comfortable; it is meant to make them think.”

Shapiro proved the only panelist to argue for the total elimination of university DEI offices without replacing them with other structures designed to achieve diversity goals. Instead, he said that student affairs, compliance officers, and admissions should assume any responsibilities related to diversity.

Last week’s discussion was sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ Civil Discourse Initiative , the Harvard College Intellectual Vitality Initiative , and the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics .

Also discussed were social media and the distorted views it surfaces on DEI.

Hawkins noted that DEI takes a real beating on the platforms, all while cancel culture is the true driver behind most modern outrage. “There is this heightened sense of awareness,” she said. “There’s this heightened sense of accountability. There is this heightened sense of threat. And this heightened sense of punitive action, all surrounding a larger cultural phenomenon that has nothing to do with diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Should college essays touch on race? Some feel the affirmative action ruling leaves them no choice

CHICAGO — When she started writing her college essay, Hillary Amofa told the story she thought admissions offices wanted to hear. About being the daughter of immigrants from Ghana and growing up in a small apartment in Chicago. About hardship and struggle.

Then she deleted it all.

“I would just find myself kind of trauma-dumping,” said the 18-year-old senior at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago. “And I’m just like, this doesn’t really say anything about me as a person.”

When the Supreme Court ended affirmative action in higher education, it left the college essay as one of few places where race can play a role in admissions decisions. For many students of color, instantly more was riding on the already high-stakes writing assignment. Some say they felt pressure to exploit their hardships as they competed for a spot on campus.

Amofa was just starting to think about her essay when the court issued its decision, and it left her with a wave of questions. Could she still write about her race? Could she be penalized for it? She wanted to tell colleges about her heritage but she didn’t want to be defined by it.

In English class, Amofa and her classmates read sample essays that all seemed to focus on some trauma or hardship. It left her with the impression she had to write about her life’s hardest moments to show how far she’d come. But she and some of her classmates wondered if their lives had been hard enough to catch the attention of admissions offices.

“For a lot of students, there’s a feeling of, like, having to go through something so horrible to feel worthy of going to school, which is kind of sad,” said Amofa, the daughter of a hospital technician and an Uber driver.

This year’s senior class is the first in decades to navigate college admissions without affirmative action . The Supreme Court upheld the practice in decisions going back to the 1970s, but this court’s conservative supermajority found it is unconstitutional for colleges to give students extra weight because of their race alone.

Still, the decision left room for race to play an indirect role: Chief Justice John Roberts wrote universities can still consider how an applicant’s life was shaped by their race, “so long as that discussion is concretely tied to a quality of character or unique ability.”

“A benefit to a student who overcame racial discrimination, for example, must be tied to that student’s courage and determination,” he wrote.

Scores of colleges responded with new essay prompts asking about students’ backgrounds. Brown University asked applicants how “an aspect of your growing up has inspired or challenged you.” Rice University asked students how their perspectives were shaped by their “background, experiences, upbringing, and/or racial identity.”

WONDERING IF SCHOOLS 'EXPECT A SOB STORY'

When Darrian Merritt started writing his essay, he knew the stakes were higher than ever because of the court’s decision. His first instinct was to write about events that led to him going to live with his grandmother as a child.

Those were painful memories, but he thought they might play well at schools like Yale, Stanford and Vanderbilt.

“I feel like the admissions committee might expect a sob story or a tragic story,” said Merritt, a senior in Cleveland. “And if you don’t provide that, then maybe they’re not going to feel like you went through enough to deserve having a spot at the university. I wrestled with that a lot.”

He wrote drafts focusing on his childhood, but it never amounted to more than a collection of memories. Eventually he abandoned the idea and aimed for an essay that would stand out for its positivity.

Merritt wrote about a summer camp where he started to feel more comfortable in his own skin. He described embracing his personality and defying his tendency to please others. The essay had humor — it centered on a water gun fight where he had victory in sight but, in a comedic twist, slipped and fell. But the essay also reflects on his feelings of not being “Black enough” and getting made fun of for listening to “white people music.”

“I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to write this for me, and we’re just going to see how it goes,’” he said. “It just felt real, and it felt like an honest story.”

The essay describes a breakthrough as he learned “to take ownership of myself and my future by sharing my true personality with the people I encounter. ... I realized that the first chapter of my own story had just been written.”

A RULING PROMPTS PIVOTS ON ESSAY TOPICS

Like many students, Max Decker of Portland, Oregon, had drafted a college essay on one topic, only to change direction after the Supreme Court ruling in June.

Decker initially wrote about his love for video games. In a childhood surrounded by constant change, navigating his parents’ divorce, the games he took from place to place on his Nintendo DS were a source of comfort.

But the essay he submitted to colleges focused on the community he found through Word is Bond, a leadership group for young Black men in Portland.

As the only biracial, Jewish kid with divorced parents in a predominantly white, Christian community, Decker wrote he constantly felt like the odd one out. On a trip with Word is Bond to Capitol Hill, he and friends who looked just like him shook hands with lawmakers. The experience, he wrote, changed how he saw himself.

“It’s because I’m different that I provide something precious to the world, not the other way around,” he wrote.

As a first-generation college student, Decker thought about the subtle ways his peers seemed to know more about navigating the admissions process . They made sure to get into advanced classes at the start of high school, and they knew how to secure glowing letters of recommendation.

If writing about race would give him a slight edge and show admissions officers a fuller picture of his achievements, he wanted to take that small advantage.

His first memory about race, Decker said, was when he went to get a haircut in elementary school and the barber made rude comments about his curly hair. Until recently, the insecurity that moment created led him to keep his hair buzzed short.

Through Word is Bond, Decker said he found a space to explore his identity as a Black man. It was one of the first times he was surrounded by Black peers and saw Black role models. It filled him with a sense of pride in his identity. No more buzzcut.

The pressure to write about race involved a tradeoff with other important things in his life, Decker said. That included his passion for journalism, like the piece he wrote on efforts to revive a once-thriving Black neighborhood in Portland. In the end, he squeezed in 100 characters about his journalism under the application’s activities section.

“My final essay, it felt true to myself. But the difference between that and my other essay was the fact that it wasn’t the truth that I necessarily wanted to share,” said Decker, whose top college choice is Tulane, in New Orleans, because of the region’s diversity. “It felt like I just had to limit the truth I was sharing to what I feel like the world is expecting of me.”

SPELLING OUT THE IMPACT OF RACE

Before the Supreme Court ruling, it seemed a given to Imani Laird that colleges would consider the ways that race had touched her life. But now, she felt like she had to spell it out.

As she started her essay, she reflected on how she had faced bias or felt overlooked as a Black student in predominantly white spaces.

There was the year in math class when the teacher kept calling her by the name of another Black student. There were the comments that she’d have an easier time getting into college because she was Black .

“I didn’t have it easier because of my race,” said Laird, a senior at Newton South High School in the Boston suburbs who was accepted at Wellesley and Howard University, and is waiting to hear from several Ivy League colleges. “I had stuff I had to overcome.”

In her final essays, she wrote about her grandfather, who served in the military but was denied access to GI Bill benefits because of his race.

She described how discrimination fueled her ambition to excel and pursue a career in public policy.

“So, I never settled for mediocrity,” she wrote. “Regardless of the subject, my goal in class was not just to participate but to excel. Beyond academics, I wanted to excel while remembering what started this motivation in the first place.”

WILL SCHOOLS LOSE RACIAL DIVERSITY?

Amofa used to think affirmative action was only a factor at schools like Harvard and Yale. After the court’s ruling, she was surprised to find that race was taken into account even at some public universities she was applying to.

Now, without affirmative action, she wondered if mostly white schools will become even whiter.

It’s been on her mind as she chooses between Indiana University and the University of Dayton, both of which have relatively few Black students. When she was one of the only Black students in her grade school, she could fall back on her family and Ghanaian friends at church. At college, she worries about loneliness.

“That’s what I’m nervous about,” she said. “Going and just feeling so isolated, even though I’m constantly around people.”

The first drafts of her essay focused on growing up in a low-income family, sharing a bedroom with her brother and grandmother. But it didn’t tell colleges about who she is now, she said.

Her final essay tells how she came to embrace her natural hair . She wrote about going to a mostly white grade school where classmates made jokes about her afro. When her grandmother sent her back with braids or cornrows, they made fun of those too.

Over time, she ignored their insults and found beauty in the styles worn by women in her life. She now runs a business doing braids and other hairstyles in her neighborhood.

“I stopped seeing myself through the lens of the European traditional beauty standards and started seeing myself through the lens that I created,” Amofa wrote.

“Criticism will persist, but it loses its power when you know there’s a crown on your head!”
