Life in metropolitan cities can be exciting and very happening, but life in villages has an entirely different vibe with its countryside atmosphere. The simplicity, peace and purity of a village is wonderful and unbeatable. I come from a small Himalayan village, Lamahatta, popularly known for its beauty. The name of my village is Lamahatta. It is a small village present in the outskirts of North Bengal. I was born and brought up in Lamahatta. Lamahatta is well known for its lush pine forests, vast stretches of Darjeeling tea garden and the views of the snow-capped mountains. It is also a tourist destination. My village remains cool all through the year. The number of people residing in Lamahatta is not more than 1000. The villagers are very helpful. The majority of the women are tea-plantation workers whereas men work in construction. A pucca road runs through the entire village with small decorated houses on each side of the road. I love my village and its people.

I come from a village named Lamahatta. The village is located at a very high altitude nearly about 5000 feet above sea level. Lamahatta is a very small village of only 1000 residents. My village has become one of the tourist destinations because of its pleasant climate and natural beauty. Lamahatta has vast stretches of tea plantations and beautiful pine forests. These forests smell refreshing and sweet due to the presence of terpenes on them. My father used to take me to the village every year during my school holidays. I used to spend the entire holidays amidst the silence of the pine forests in a little concrete house with my mother, father and my brother.

The chirping of birds all throughout the day, and the light cool breeze used to amaze me and freshen up our minds. Here in my village, the houses are beautifully decorated with orchids and other flowers. Life in a village is very different from that in urban cities. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Lamahatta has always been peaceful. The people of my village are very helpful and lovable. In the evening, after the completion of work, every woman in the village meets in a small community hall where they have a small get-together. We celebrate each and every festival with great enthusiasm.

Everyone loves their native birthplace and so do I. I was born in a village named Lamahatta located at an altitude of 5000 feet near Darjeeling, the Queen of Hills in North Bengal. 'Lama' in Lamahatta stands for a Buddhist monk and 'Hatta’ means a hut. So basically Lamahatta means a monk's hermitage. Lamahatta is an offbeat location known for its lush green pine trees and large stretches of tea gardens with a beautiful view of the mountains. Due to this, my village has become a famous tourist destination mainly during the summers and the springs.

Life In A Village | Life in my village is quite different from that in urban cities. Here, it is slower and more peaceful. People live together and lead very simple lives. We mostly stay away from the continuous hustle and bustle of urban life. My village is greener and one can feel the freshness of the air.

About My Village

The people of my village are generally tribals belonging to the Sherpas, Tamangs, Bhutias and Dukpas . They work hard every day in order to make Lamahatta a clean, simple place and attractive place to live in. I belong to the Bhutia tribe. In my house, I have my parents and my small brother. My mother works as a tea plantation worker whereas my father works at a construction site. The occupations of the people in my village are plantation workers, homestay caretakers, dhaba managers and construction workers.

Places Of Attraction | My village people, along with the support of the government, have made this an eco-tourism place. Lamahatta contributes a good amount to North Bengal tourism. People from other countries often visit my village during the summer. Besides the natural beauty, the pleasant weather makes Lamahatt a dream place and an ideal place to live in. There are many exciting places for sightseeing here. We have the Lamahatta Eco Park , a roadside garden, monasteries among the woods, trekking facilities to Sacred Pond, the Gari Danda Fort and most importantly the huge tea plantations. My village serves as the connecting route between Darjeeling and Kalimpong . We also have ‘machan’, a wooden watchtower from where we can view the entire Lamahatta. The Eco park consists of about hundreds of colorful flags. My father says that the wind blowing through these flags is considered to purify the souls and minds of the people.

Christmas Celebration in Lamahatta

We celebrate all the festivals in my village but Christmas is specially celebrated with huge pomp and gaiety. Each house is decorated with lanterns and lights. All the kids have Christmas tree decoration competitions among themselves where the best tree decorator is awarded fancy gifts by the other villagers. On Christmas eve , all the villagers meet at a common place near Eco Park where we dance and dine together. I love my village because it is peaceful and serene. Lamahatta holds a number of my childhood memories. Living here makes me relive all those magical moments. It feels good to stay here. The natural beauty of my village always amazes me.

It is also the world’s biggest secular republic which gives me the chance to interact with people from so many different ethnicities and cultures firsthand.

It is a very big country with varying demographic features too ranging from the mighty Himalayas in the North to the vast Indian Ocean in the south. It is very rich in wildlife too and has a very large amount of flora and fauna. India is also famous for its variety of foods and spices too.

There are twenty-eight states and nine union territories and a number of rivers. India is also the biggest democracy in the world. Being a secular country there are a lot of festivals celebrated throughout the year like Diwali, Eid, Christmas and Guru Parwa to name a few.

The capital of the country is Delhi which is located in the heart of the nation. It is also home to some very famous historical monuments like the Red Fort and the Qutub Minar. Nearby Delhi is Agra which houses the incredible Taj Mahal one of the seven wonders of the world.

India is also the birthplace of some very prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi who is hailed as the flagbearer of non-violence throughout the world.

The country has also been blessed with distinct architecture and historical mathematicians too. Ramanujam and Aryabhatta are recognized throughout for continued fractions and the discovery of zero respectively.

A big canal flows by the northern side of the village. The climate of our village is suitable for health. The southern and the western sides of my village are open. So, we get fresh air. 'My Town My Pride', 'Back to Village' programmes catalyzed development in J-K: Govt

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], December 20 (ANI): The successful conclusion of ‘My Town My Pride (MTMP)’ and ‘Back to Village-4 (B2V4)’ programmes proved as a catalyst in the development of the entire Jammu and Kashmir and has also amplified the saturation of different beneficiary-oriented schemes, said the Union Territory government on Tuesday.

During the B2V4 programme, as per official data, around 54 deliverables of 21 departments were saturated across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per the official data, the programme has also been successful in providing self-employment opportunities to 21,329 individuals. 277 cooperative societies were also registered in various fields like poultry, housing, transport, health etc. In the agriculture sector, 14,567 Soil Health Cards as well as 5,914 Kissan Credit Cards were also issued.

The UT government said labourers and migrant workers also benefitted during B2V4 as 24,179 beneficiaries were enrolled and 4,063 e-Shram cards were generated. In the health sector, 95,959 PMJAY-SEHAT Golden Cards were issued thereby giving health insurance coverage to 49,526 families.

Similarly, Revenue Department has been successful in issuing 6.6 lakh Land Passbooks and during B2V4, 8.46 lakh persons were introduced to Apki Zamin Apki Nigrani portal enabling them to access revenue records from the comfort of their homes.

In line with Back to Village programme, 5,159 Disability Cards (UDID) were digitised and 30,231 Anganwadi beneficiaries were seeded. Moreover, 211 Divyang Camps were also organised by the department.

In addition, over 1.55 lakh e-challans were issued by the Mining Department with a unique QR code integrated with an online payment system for the sale and purchase of minerals through the zero-manual interface.

Similarly, with ‘My Town My Pride’ public outreach programme, the government said it is putting people at the heart of urban transformation and unlocking cities’ full potential to drive growth, empower local governance and ensure seamless delivery of services at the doorsteps.

The recently concluded MTMP 2.0 was a resounding success where a record number of 7.16 lakh people participated in the programme across the UT, from November 28, 2022 to December 6, 2022.

Special awareness camps were arranged by various departments involved in delivering public services like issuance of domicile certificates, widow/ old-age/ disability pensions, Aadhaar, water and power connections, issuance of birth and death certificates, land revenue extracts, sewage and cleanliness services, etc at the venue of the programme itself and through a weeklong “Shahri Jan Abhiyan”.

According to the government, the ‘My Town My Pride’ public outreach programme lays special focus on Self-employment generation and skill development to empower youth. During MTMP Abhiyan, 25 youths from each ward were identified for self-employment assistance and skill training.

During MTMP 2.0, as per official data, around 2,740 street vendor licenses, 1,144 Kisan Credit Cards, 6,251 Soil Health Cards, 38,973 Golden cards, 40,482 e-challans, 3,402 e-Shram Cards, 53,923 passbooks, 4,680 Disability Cards have been issued by the concerned Departments.

In addition, 2.843 awareness camps were held for saturation of various schemes like PMAY(U), DAY-NULM (Deen Dayal Antodaya Yozana), Self Employment Programme (SEP), PM SVANIDHI (Atam Nirbhar Bharat) AMRUT 2.0 and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBH-U), 1,33,524 Households covered under door-to-door awareness drive under the ban on single-use plastic besides 1,362 beneficiaries were covered under GrahPravesh (PMAY-Urban).

Sports activities were also carried out in 80 towns during Jan Abhiyan and 1,40,763 sports persons participated, 5,002 individuals covered under the self-employment drive in the ULBs. 248 CSC camps organized in corporations and urban local bodies (ULB), 2,649 inheritance mutation done, 1,743 Ladli Beti and 36,556 Anganwadi beneficiaries seeded with Adhaar during Jan Abhiyan, 96 Divyang Camps held during Jan Abhiyan, 560 Senior Citizens clubs were got formed in various ULBs.

As part of this programme, more than 170 senior officers of the government reached out to Urban Local Bodies in J&K, where they interacted and obtained feedback from the grassroots, so as to tailor the government efforts in improving the delivery of services specific to that area. (ANI)

Scars can be covered up or airbrushed away, our critic writes. But what is lost when we erase our experiences from our bodies?

I am healthy and active, but my legs have lots of scars, including a seven-inch incision from a recent surgery. I am attending an event that asks people to wear cocktail attire. My nice dresses are all just below the knee or knee length. Do I wear pantyhose or show off all my scars, blemishes and other things that come related with life and age? — Susan, Del Mar, Calif.

In a world of Instagram filters, Photoshop, fillers, Botox, lasers and every other body treatment under the sun, it can be shocking to look at your actual untouched self. Marks that once signaled a life well lived — or adventurously lived, or dangerously lived, or joyfully lived; of pain experienced and conquered — can now seem a somewhat embarrassing sign of wear and tear, or human frailty. And no one wants to be giving worn-down vibes.

Yet there is also power in a refusal to hide. Jane Goodall, the primatologist, just turned 90, and I loved seeing the celebrations of her life and how she got to here, a journey writ on her skin. Recently, Phoebe Philo featured a photo in the ad campaign for her new line that showed a close-up image of a stomach complete with stretch marks. And I’ve always admired Padma Lakshmi’s willingness to show her scars, including the seven-inch one on her upper arm from a car accident when she was a teenager.

That scar was front and center last year during her Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoot . Afterward, she got a lot of questions about why she hadn’t covered it up with makeup or airbrushed it away. “It’s what sets me apart and makes me me, and even if someone could wave a magic wand I really don’t think I would choose to eliminate my scar,” she said .

Which pretty much says it all.

It also suggests to me that the pendulum may be swinging away from plastic-y perfection. After all, when we erase our experiences from our bodies, we lose more than just a mark.

And the more we see of such “flawed” images presented not, in fact, as flawed but as unremarkable, the more our understanding of beauty will adjust and expand. I always think of the sculptor Marc Quinn’s series of heroic marble sculptures of the thalidomide generation , the British children born with malformed or missing limbs as a result of an anti-nausea drug taken during pregnancy in the late 1950s and early ’60s.

By treating their adult selves with the same appreciation Michelangelo reserved for his David, Mr. Quinn effectively changed the definition of who gets to be put on a pedestal.

I know it can be uncomfortable to be on the bleeding edge of this sort of movement, to be the only person in a room with lines on your forehead, or stretch marks at the beach, or a scar on your shin. And when it comes to visible scars, you have to be willing to endure the questions you’ll probably get.

But the more people confront others with their reality, the more we normalize what is actually normal life, the better for everyone. Also, you don’t have to worry about nylons or leg makeup or having to find a new, longer skirt (or trousers). And at the very least, the scar can be a talking point.

My husband has a big scar on his knee from childhood, and whenever anyone asks how he got it, he says “bear attack.” That is not actually true, but it’s a good icebreaker.

All of which to say: Yes, you should wear your scars with the same pride you may wear a bag from the Row or Alaïa platforms. You’ve earned them.
