The main objective of the research are

  • To identify and analyze the existing Procedure-Oriented (PO) complexity metrics.
  • To propose a set of new complexity factors which have not been considered by both types of complexity metrics (PO and OO) that exist in literature.
  • To conduct an empirical study to propose a standard set of novel cognitive weights for several basic programming elements.
  • To introduce a new OO complexity metric that measures program complexity based on the novel cognitive weights and novel factors that would be proposed via the study and is able to compute the complexity of a software code at any given level (system, class, method, and program statement) based on all its factors.

Main goal of this research proposal is to investigate and develop a robust machine learning based framework for Alzheimer's disease detection and to produce output that will satisfy the demand of human experts

The objective of the research is to develop a software to detect the tumor type within minimum time when a collection of digital MRI data of a single patient is given. To achieve this goal, a deep learning approach is developed. More than 60,000 MRI scans of diagnosed patients and control groups are used to train a deep neural network model.

About Computing Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

“Bridging the future with innovative minds” Computing Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024 (ComURS2024) which is organized by the Faculty of Computing, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka to provide a platform for the university undergraduates to showcase their research findings and to foster a culture of scholarly engagement among the talented undergraduates. This will be marked as the first Computing Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Faculty. The Symposium is scheduled to be held as one day hybrid event on the 21 st of February 2024 under the theme, “Bridging the future with innovative minds”. The Symposium aims to encourage academic excellence, promote networking and collaboration, enhance visibility, and leverage shared resources for the benefit of the undergraduates and the wider academic community.

Research Focus

The NIFS' Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics Research Programs (NIFS - CSMT) focus on addressing the fundamental scientific aspects of data processing, interpretation and modeling problems. The NIFS' Computer Science Research Programs (NIFS - CSMT) focus on addressing the fundamental scientific aspects of data processing, modeling problems and designing and implementing solutions.

The overall aim of the  SDLC framework to adopt paradigm shift of novel software development strategies research project  is to enhance the traditional SDLC for quality software product development. 

Role of Key Performance Indicators in Evaluating the Performance of Institutes Working on Research and Development in the Food and Agriculture Sectors in Sri Lanka project focuses on developing theoretical frame work for scientists to carry out their research activities even via virtual platform.

Why does this matter ?

We are living in a digital era. Therefore, each and every activity is being automated through out the world. Sri Lanka is far behind in using ICT and other technologies to support the development of the country’s economy. Outcomes of these research projects assist stakeholders to perform their operations efficiently with minimum cost.

Looking back at the ComURS 2024!

The 1 st Computing Undergraduate Research Symposium (ComURS 2024), organized by the Faculty of Computing, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka was successfully concluded on 21 st of February 2024. The event was graced by the presence of Professor S. Vasanthapriyan, the Dean of the Faculty of Computing, the Heads of the Departments, distinguished panel of judges,  academic, academic-support, non academic staff, and well wishers. 

Final year undergraduates from the 2017/ 2018 Batch showcased their research findings at this inaugural symposium while it marked a significant milestone for budding researchers.

ComURS 2024 was held  under the theme “Bridging the future with innovative minds” with the aim of encouraging academic excellence, promoting networking and collaboration, enhancing visibility, and leveraging shared resources for the benefit of the undergraduates and the wider academic community.This was a good platform for the undergraduates to promote academic and industrial research while providing opportunities for them to share research findings with an extensive research community.

  • The course has a stronger focus on fundamental concepts underpinning Computer Science and the coverage of recent industry-changing developments in AI, big data analytics, computational theory and statistics for computing and machine learning.
  • The inclusion of a more substantial computation, statistical, and big data element into the course requires students with a stronger mathematical background, which is ensured by differentiated criteria for admission.
  • The course combines the Sri Lankan computing market demand with the wider research and development approaches in computer science to provide the necessary knowledge portfolio for the graduates, both within the Sri Lankan context and the wider international trends.
  • The course is taught by a combination of flying faculty from University of Plymouth and local lecturers, all with recognised research track record within their field, that seeking to embed research-informed teaching throughout the learning experience and helping to ensure state of the art knowledge, skills and practice. Students will have the exciting opportunity to engage with world-leading researchers in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks and further advanced computing paradigms, provided through the continuous alignment of the programme to the current University of Plymouth curriculum.
  • NSBM has strong links with the Sri Lankan industry, having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 25 organizations who have either a IT focus or include a substantive IT element in their infrastructure or. In the preliminary phases, the group was consulted by the programme team to ensure the relevance of the curriculum to the market needs.
  • In line with the University of Plymouth values, NSBM promotes learning through practice and doing, and a prominent feature the two stages of the degree is a practice module that provides a holistic learning experience for students, drawing on the rest of their taught content from that stage (and earlier) and combining it to produce outputs of a professional standard.
  • The focus on fundamental and state of the art Computer Science topics further provides options to engage into postgraduate studies in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence.

We are happy to announce the establishment of the Department of Computer Science as the sixth department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences to contribute to the B.Sc degree programme by offering Computer Science as the seventh discipline. Our department is located on the third floor of the Science and Technology building of the Colombo Regional Center.

We have 20 years of experience in offering Computer Science discipline under the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. This discipline is open for any student who satisfies the qualification to enter the B.Sc. Degree Programme, regardless of whether they have offered courses from the Bio Science or the Physical Science streams of the Advanced/Foundation level. The aim of the courses offered in the B.Sc degree programme is to develop competent personnel who are capable of assuming positions in the fields of Computer Science and Information Technology. In addition, we offer certificate programmes, tailor-made training programmes and short courses in computer application and networking, mainly to cater to user requirements.

To enhance the practical knowledge in Computer Science the department has a modern well-equipped computer science laboratory and a digital computer laboratory in the Colombo Regional Center. A computer science laboratory is also located at the Kandy Regional Center.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 3 “S” passes in Physical Science Stream (Covering Combined Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry or ICT) in G.C.E. A/L (Sri Lanka) in one and the same sitting or Minimum of 3 “C” passes (Covering Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry or Computer Science/IT) in G.C.E A/L Cambridge or Edexcel in one and the same sitting, AND a pass in the special Aptitude Test & Interview conducted by SLIIT Faculty of Computing.

The fee is presently rs 350,000 per semester fees for any subsequent semester should be paid prior to the commencement of each semester. this all inclusive fee is charged to cover lectures, tutorials and examinations and access to computer laboratory facilities and library. the fees should be credited to, account no 1630552 of the bank of ceylon in favour of sri lanka institute of information technology, at the bank of ceylon kollupitiya branch located at the first floor of the boc merchant tower building or at any branch of the bank of ceylon; or to account no 00 399 0000033 of the sampath bank at any branch of sampath bank. normally, fees paid will not be refunded. however, requests for refund of fees may be considered if made before expiry of one week from the date of commencement of lectures for each semester. the date of commencement of lectures for the new applicants will be the date of commencement of lectures of the orientation programme. the refund, if made will be subject to a deduction of ten percent of the fee paid..

Department of Computer Science

The first student-focused national workshop on Computer Science referred to as “Sri Lanka Student Workshop on Computer Science (SL-SWCS)” is a proud initiative by the DCS. SL-SWCS provides a stimulating opportunity for young research students across the country to get involved in discussions with researchers from local and foreign universities. Students get an opportunity to present the results of their research activities via poster presentations in a friendly and constructive environment that would possibly lead to future collaborations with their scientific peers. The first national workshop SL-SWCS’11 was held on 8th of December 2011 in Jaffna. Since then SL-SWCS is conducted as a biennial workshop that is well attended by around 150 participants.

The Fourth Sri Lanka Student Workshop on Computer Science (SL-SWCS’17) was successfully conducted on Saturday, 9th of December 2017 in the Auditorium of the Hatton National Bank, Metro Building, Jaffna. The workshop was inaugurated at 9.00am as planned with the presence of the Chief Guest Professor Ratnam Vigneswaran (Vice-Chancellor of University of Jaffna), Special Guest Professor Prince Jeyadevan (Dean, Faculty of Science), Keynote Speakers Dr. Chandana Gamage and Mr. Suren Saverimuthu, Heads of Department of Faculty of Science, academic staff members and students of Department of Computer Science. Dr. K. Thabotharan (General Chair/SL-SWCS’17) presided the workshop and delivered the welcome speech. He then invited the Vice-Chancellor to deliver the Chief Guest’s address. The Vice-Chancellor highly appreciated the work done by the staff of the Department of Computer Science in conducting the workshop for the fourth time and said that it is a timely needed one for the students to showcase their talents. Then the General Chair invited the Dean/Science, to deliver the special address. The Dean indicated that such workshops encourage students to share their research findings with peers and congratulated all the participants and presenters of the workshop.

Once the inauguration of the workshop is over, Dr. S. Mahesan introduced the first Keynote speaker Dr. Chandana Gamage to deliver his speech. Dr. Gamage, nicely guided the participants towards the current research in the AI and Robotics, and it was well received by the participants. The keynote speech was followed by the spotlight session in which each author of poster was given a one-minute time slot to present his/her work. Just after the tea break, Dr. (Mrs.) B. Mayurathan introduced the five selected authors of posters to present their work for about ten minutes. Each presenter was also given a five-minutes time slot for question and answering. With that, the morning session came to an end and the participants were invited for lunch.

After the lunch, Mr. S. Suthakar introduced the second keynote speaker Mr. Gerard S. Saverimuthu to deliver his speech. Mr. Saverimuthu pointed out the recent research activities in AI and its use cases for SA and the importance of Industry academic research collaboration. His keynote speech was well received by the audience. Just after the keynote speech two more selected authors were given ten-minutes time slot each to present their work. At the end of the presentation all the attendees were invited to the hall where the fourteen accepted posters were on display. Attendees have visited all the posters and it was very encouraging to see that the attendees anxiously questioned each and every poster on display. Judges were also seen very busy in evaluating the posters to select one of them as the best poster. The poster session was followed by tea and after the tea break all the attendees gathered together to listen the panel discussion on future trends and directions in Computer Science for research and job placements. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. E.Y.A. Charles (Programme-Chair/SL-SWCS’17) and Dr. Gamage, Mr. Saverimuthu and Mr. Jegajeevan (Manager/IBM Systems and Technology Group, Sri Lanka) have participated as the panelists. Participants were also given a chance to ask questions and many students were very anxious to clear out all their doubts regarding students’ research, entrepreneurship and future trends in job market. As the last agenda item judges have announced the Best Oral Presentation Award and the Best Poster Award. Mrs. M. Shajini was awarded with the Best Poster Presentation Award and Mr. R.A. Miller was awarded with the Best Poster Award. Both awards also included a cash prize as a sponsor from Professor Saman Halgamuge through University of Melbourne, Australia. Then Dr. Thabotharan delivered the vote of thanks, thanking all the persons who have contributed immensely for successfully conducting the workshop including the event sponsors: 99X Technology, WSO2, and the University of Jaffna. The workshop ended at 5.30 pm.

M.Sc. in Computer Science, Master of Computer Science, Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate in Computer Science

Introduction

Computing has become an indispensable skill today both locally and globally. However, it is a rapidly expanding subject area that interacts with numerous other disciplines by exposing it to a range of interesting and raising challenging problems. To solve these problems, one needs to have a firm grasp of the fundamental concepts of Computer Science as well as in-depth knowledge of specific areas of Computer Science such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Robotics, Cloud Computing, High Performance Computing, Computer Security, Software Engineering, Net-centric Computing, Visual Computing, Multimedia Technologies, Mobile and Web Computing, etc. are needed. This program has been designed to address the aforementioned requirements by developing the necessary skills of students to develop innovative solutions to emerging complex problems.

Target Group

  • Those who are planning to start their career or already employed in the field of computing. 
  • Those who need postgraduate qualifications in Computer Science or those who are pursuing qualifications to do higher studies in computing and related disciplines.
  • Those who teach Computing disciplines in universities, other higher educational institutes, or schools.

Minimum Admission Requirement

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information and Communication Technology, Information Systems, Physical Sciences or Engineering from a recognized university, or
  • Any other degree with 30 credits in Computing from a recognized university, or
  • Any other equivalent qualification in Computing that would be acceptable to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and the senate of the university.

Student Intake

Maximum of 50 students per batch. However, the program will be started only if at least 25 candidates are registered.

Selection Procedure 

A written examination and/or an interview will be held to select candidates when the number of applicants exceeds the maximum number that can be accommodated. 

Program Duration 

  • M.Sc. in Computer Science – 2 years (4 semesters)
  • Master of Computer Science – 1 year (2 semesters) 
  • Postgraduate Diploma / Certificate in Computer Science – 1 year (2 semesters)

Program Structure

The program is divided into 4 semesters. Semester l consists of core course units worth 15 credits. Semester 2 consists of core and optional course units. Only those who are leaving with a Master of Computer Science degree at the end of the first year need to complete the independent study in the second semester. In semesters 3 and 4, candidates who are eligible to do the thesis can engage in individual research and submit a thesis. Lectures and practical sessions are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. In addition to that, candidates must be able to spend a considerable amount of time on self-studies, homework, assignments, etc., throughout the program. This program is primarily a two-year M.Sc. program with course work and research (SLQF level 10). All candidates are recruited as M.Sc. candidates, and they are required to follow the course units offered in the first and second semesters. 

Course Structure 

The course units offered for the M.Sc. program in Computer Science are given in Table 1. However, the course units given in the list could be replaced by other suitable course units without prior notice with the intention of improving the program and/or depending on the availability of the lecturers.

The Grade point system for course units and thesis is given in Table 2

Assessment Process    

  • Methods of continuous assessments:  

Students will be assessed during the program through written examinations, quizzes, assignments, viva voce examination, practical and tutorials as appropriate.

  • Eligibility requirement for an examination of a course unit: 

A student will be eligible to sit the end of semester examination of a course unit if she has maintained a minimum of 60% attendance at lectures/practical of the course unit. Any student who fails to fulfil the eligibility requirement for any course unit will be allowed to sit the examination of the course unit but the maximum grade he/she can earn for that course unit shall be restricted to ‘C+’.

  • Valid reasons for absence from an examination of a course unit: 

The excuse may be granted only for seriously ill health or death of an immediate family member or any other cause acceptable to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) subsequently approved by the university senate. A candidate who is absent due to medical reasons shall submit a medical certificate from a registered medical officer within two weeks from the date of the examination. He/She may sit the examination with the next batch, and he/she is considered as a first-time candidate. However, if the course unit is not available in the current M.Sc. program, the candidate must sit the examination of an alternative course unit offered in the respective semester of the current academic year.

  • Carrying forward continuous assessment marks: 

In case of a repeated candidate or an absentee of a course unit, marks obtained for the continuous evaluation of that course unit shall be carried forward for the next examination if the lecturer-in-charge of the course unit is agreed.

  • Duration of a written/practical examination: 

Duration of an end of semester written/practical examination can vary depending on the requirements of each course unit.

  • Calculating the GPA of course units:

Where GPi and C i are grade point and the credit value of the i th course unit respectively. The GPA shall be rounded to the second decimal place. If a student has taken more than the required number of credits for a certain completion point, only the highest graded course units will be taken to calculate the GPA.

  • Completion of a course unit: 

A candidate needs a minimum of ‘C’ grade to pass the examination of a course unit. Those who do not meet the above criterion may repeat the final examination of the course unit and maximum grade in such an attempt shall be limited to the grade ‘B’.

  • Independent Study: 

At the end of the second semester, those candidates who obtain a GPA not less than 2.70 are eligible to do the independent study and submit a thesis only if they wish to exit with a Master of Computer Science degree. If a student doesn’t have the required minimum GPA to do the independent study, the Department may allow him/her to continue the independent study under the condition of fulfilling the required qualifications ( GPA excluding the independent study ) before the graduation. However, it is the student’s responsibility to provide a suitable independent study topic before the beginning of the second semester. Students should discuss with academics in any university or qualified personnel in the industry to choose a research topic. The independent study will be evaluated on the basis of a written thesis and an oral presentation (viva-voce examination). The examination panel consists of supervisor(s) of the independent study and two other examiners as recommended by the Board of Study in Physical Sciences and approved by the Senate of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Those who are taking independent study are required to take course units worth 10 credits from the second semester.

  • M.Sc.. thesis: 

At the end of the second semester, those candidates who obtain a GPA not less than 2.70 are eligible to do a research project and submit an M.Sc. thesis based on the research project. If a student doesn’t have the required minimum GPA to do the research project, the Department may allow him/her to continue the research under the condition of fulfilling the required qualifications ( GPA excluding the research project ) before the graduation. However, it is the student’s responsibility to provide a suitable research topic before the beginning of the third semester. Students should discuss with academics in any university or qualified personnel in the industry to choose a research topic. The research project will be evaluated on the basis of a written M.Sc. thesis and an oral presentation (viva-voce examination). The examination panel consists of supervisor(s) of the research project and two other examiners as recommended by the Board of Study in Physical Sciences and approved by the Senate of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Those who are taking M.Sc. thesis are required to take course units worth 10 credits from the third semester.

  • Completion of the M.Sc. in Computer Science Degree:

To award the M.Sc. in Computer Science Degree, a candidate should obtain:

      (a) A GPA of not less than 2.70 for 40 credits (that should include 30 credits from the first two semesters and 10 credits from the third semester) at the end of the third semester of the program

      (b)A ‘C’ or higher grade for the M.Sc. thesis

        and

      (c)`C’ or higher grades for all the foundation course units.

  • Completion of the Master of Computer Science Degree: 

To award the Master of Computer Science degree, a candidate should obtain:

      (a) A GPA of not less than 2.70 for 25 credits (excluding the independent study) at the end of the second semester of the program

      (b) A ‘C’ or higher grade for the independent study thesis and

      (c) `C’ or higher grades for all the foundation course units.

  • Completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science: 

To award the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science, a candidate should obtain:

     (a) A GPA of not less than 2.50 for 25 credits (that should include 15 credits from the first semester and 10 credits from the second semester excluding the independent study) at the end of the second semester of the program

    (b) `C’ or higher grades for all the foundation course units.

  • Completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Computer Science:

To award the Postgraduate Certificate in Computer Science, a candidate should obtain:

     (a)  A GPA of not less than 2.00 for 20 credits (that should include 15 credits from the first semester and 05 credits from the second semester excluding the independent study) at the end of the second semester of the program

     (b) `C’ or higher grades for all the foundation course units.

  • Exit points: 

The following exit points are offered to a candidate of the program:

    (a) A candidate who fulfils the requirement given in Assessment process – 13 has the option of exiting at the postgraduate certificate level and obtaining the Postgraduate Certificate in Computer Science   [SLQF 7].

    (b) A candidate who fulfils the requirement given in Assessment process – 12 has the option of exiting at the postgraduate diploma level and obtaining the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science [SLQF 8].

    (c) A candidate who fulfils the requirement given in Assessment process – 11 has the option of exiting at the master’s by course work level and obtaining the Master of Computer Science [SLQF 9].

    (d) A candidate who fulfils the requirement given in Assessment process – 10 has the option of exiting at the M.Sc. by course work and research level and obtaining the M.Sc. in Computer Science [SLQF 10].

    Note : However, no candidate is allowed to obtain more than one certificate from the above exit points of the M.Sc. in Computer Science program from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

  • Merit pass: 

    (a) Merit Pass in M.Sc. in Computer Science:

Those who obtain a GPA of not less than 3.60 for 40 credits (that should include 30 credits from the first two semesters and 10 credits from the third semester excluding the research project) at the end of the third semester of the program and obtain an ‘A-‘ or higher grade for the thesis will be awarded a merit pass.

    (b) Merit Pass in Master of Computer Science:

Those who obtain a GPA of not less than 3.60 for 25 credits (excluding the independent study) at the end of the second semester of the program and obtain an ‘A-‘ or higher grade for the independent study will be awarded a merit pass.

  • Repeating a course unit: 

A candidate is allowed to repeat a course unit only two times. A separate repeat examination will not be held under any circumstance. The maximum grade that could be obtained for a repeated course unit is restricted to ‘B’. If a student obtains a lower grade at a repeat attempt than the grade received in an earlier attempt, the better will be used to compute the GPA . However, if the course unit is not available in the current M.Sc. program, the candidate must sit the examination of an alternative course unit offered in the respective semester of the current M.Sc. program and the maximum grade that could be obtained for this alternative course unit is also restricted to ‘B’. However, the candidates need to pay a repeat examination fee decided by the Board of Study in Physical Sciences of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).

  • Effective dates of certificates: 

    (1) M.Sc. in Computer Science:

The latest date of either the submission of the M.Sc. thesis or the completion of examinations shall be considered as the effective date. In the case of a thesis with major corrections, the effective date shall be the date of submission of the revised thesis subject to the acceptance of the panel of examiners. In the case of completion of examinations, the day following the last examination of the respective semester (the last examination the candidate has sat including the repeat examinations) shall be considered as the effective date.

    (2) Master of Computer Science:

The latest date of either the submission of the independent study thesis or the completion of examinations shall be considered as the effective date. In the case of an independent study thesis with major corrections, the effective date shall be the date of submission of the revised thesis subject to the acceptance of the panel of examiners. In the case of completion of examinations, the day following the last examination of the respective semester (the last examination the candidate has sat including the repeat examinations) shall be considered as the effective date.

    (3) Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate in Computer Science:

The day following the last examination of the respective semester the candidate has sat (including the repeat examinations) shall be considered as the effective date.

A candidate who takes a repeat examination (subsequent to submitting of thesis), the effective date shall be the day following the last examination of the respective semester.

    (2) Course fee for foreign candidates

Note: Students are not allowed to attend lectures or sit examinations if the payments were not made on time. Those who haven’t paid will not be considered as postgraduate students of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
