’12 Feet Deep’ (2017) Movie Review

Dani McKinney June 17, 2017 Reviews 2 Comments

Summer is here, and with it, some summer horror flicks that will make you never want to go in the water ever again. I had the opportunity to review Matt Eskandari’s ( Victim , Game of Assassins ) new film 12 Feet Deep . When I saw the trailer for the film, I was drawn in. At first I didn’t believe that someone could get trapped underneath a pool cover but after watching the film and seeing news reports, I can now see that this could happen in real life. 12 Feet Deep takes your fear of water and being trapped to the next level. So dive in with us as I take a look at this underwater horror.

https://youtu.be/HsNp9bx7Wqs

Official Synopsis:

Inspired by true events, two sisters are trapped under the fiberglass cover of an Olympic sized public pool and must brave the cold and each other to survive the harrowing night.

What Works?

The story works, even with it being based on true events. Before seeing the film, I thought, “How stupid could you possibly be to get stuck in a pool?” but the events that transpired to getting the sisters trapped was completely believable. Also, the relationship between the sisters was written beautifully. When in a situation where you are probably going to die, you have an epiphany of your life. Bree (Nora-Jane Noone) and Jonna (Alexandra Park)  have had a hard childhood with an abusive father, but more is explored as Jonna has had some problems with drugs while Bree has had a better life with her fairy-tale fiancé. Now, it could get really boring just in one location throughout the film, but Eskandari keeps the audience entertained when the girl’s salvation night janitor, Clara (Diane Farr), turns out to be their torturer.

What Doesn’t Work?

The only qualm I have about the film is that Tobin Bell as McGradey is barely in the film. I think he is probably in it for a total of 10 minutes. The trailer misled me to think that Bell had had a bigger part, but in reality, he didn’t.

Final Thoughts

If you like underwater, claustrophobic horror thrillers, then this is your film. If you saw the trailer and are expecting Tobin Bell to pull off a Jigsaw spin-off, then you are going to be sadly mistaken. This film, for me, was a thrill ride; it takes a look at what would it be like to have to not only fight for your life but fight to stay alive. 12 Feet Deep will be available to view on Vudu, Amazon and Apple on June 20th.

I thought this film was awful. Painful to watch. Dumb dialogue, a silly premise, BAD acting (porn without the sex), and terrible sound design. Was this a student film? The few bright spots were the female villain who delivered a decent performance and the 30 seconds of Tobin Bell. Skip this hot mess

12 Feet Deep (Movie Review)

Luke's rating: ★ ★ ★ director: matt eskandari | release date: 2017.

2017, not a good year for sisters and their water outings. Not only are these siblings finding their way into trouble, but the movies featuring their problematic scenarios have not been entirely encouraging. 12 Feet Deep is just the newest in as many weeks trapping a pair of damsels in a single location to fight for their survival.

The circumstances here are considerably mellowed when compared to the previous "trapped sisters" flick this year, 47 Meters Down. Estranged siblings Bree (Nora-Jane Noone) and Jonna (Alexandra Park), meet after years apart to mend their broken bonds during an afternoon swimming at a local indoor pool. The manager (Tobin Bell), perhaps frustrated with his stance in life, tries to rush everyone out to enjoy an extended holiday weekend and doesn't see the sisters at the bottom of the pool searching for a lost engagement ring and shuts the fiberglass cover--trapping them underneath.

Seems relatively harmless, right? When compared to other films where protagonists must fight the elements, a cushy chlorinated pool dwells entirely in "first-world problems" water. Billed as "Based on True Events" Matt Eskandari's flick ups the stakes by making one of the two siblings diabetic and the other, a troubled gal with a history of depression and substance abuse. So, if you think it's gonna be all underwater tickle fights you are sadly mistaken. The two sisters bicker constantly and trade hurtful barbs of brutal honesty--even after a common enemy enters the picture.

Pool janitor, Clara (Diane Farr), stumbles on the two and instead of putting the ordeal to an easy end, she sees potential for quick cash. Clara has troubles of her own that are at odds with her humanity--both sides play a tug-of-war that has her pitting the sisters against one another one second and searching for an out that keeps her out of trouble while helping them at the same time. However, her inclusion as a character often feels like a forced decision to inject an antagonist that keeps this from being anything more than a short cathartic journey for the duo.

Catharsis is achieved to a certain degree when the desperate swimmers reach their breaking points. Physically and emotionally exhausted Bree and Jonna plot ways to get back at their outside foe while conquering the confines of the pool and the tools at Clara's disposal to make that space more daunting and dangerous. There's an invisible clock ticking down to when Bree can no longer go without her diabetes meds as the sister's tragic backstory comes to a head with some effective moments of sisterly devotion that makes some of the meandering near the middle worth doggy paddling for.

Eskandari's film belly flops with the introduction of a poorly conceived "villain" but in the end fights back up for air with the strong performances from Noone and Park. 12 Feet Deep might spend a little too much time dipping its toe in the water waiting for the right temp before diving in, but once it does it swims a confident yet lopsided line to the finish.

This claustrophobic film was shot in multiple locations within 14 days. According to an interview with " 1428 Elm ", director Matt Eskandari expressed that the film came from his own fear of swimming pools and oceans. In his own words, he expressed: " Pools and oceans all create a bona fide sense of fear for me. Just the whole idea of being stuck in a pool makes me sweat quite a bit. I decided to put this fear to rest." use, and the concept blossomed from there .” The character Jonna is mentioned as a tribute to Jonah from the Old Testament. Better known as a character trapped in the belly of a whale. The character McGradey is played by Tobin Bell, and was named after the character Charles Grady from The Shining . This is director Eskandari's favorite horror film. The public pool in the film is called the " Ketea Aquatic Center ." This was named after the monsters of the sea in Greek mythology.

In general, I am a big fan of claustrophobic films, and this thriller also has its moments. However, the plot contains some holes, which did not make it a credible film for me. On the other hand, it is nice that the film is largely carried by two characters for 85 minutes. If you are a fan of a thriller with a lot of action, then this is not for you. Otherwise it's quite entertaining.

When Tobin Bell (almost invariably typecast as a villain and best known as Jigsaw in the Saw series) closes the pool in a small role as an unsympathetic lifeguard, two sisters are accidentally left behind in the water under the cover. In the remainder of the film they will do everything they can to get out of the pool.

Director and writer Matt Eskandari creates a modest plot for a film that is not very long at 85 minutes, but which still needs an end after the sisters have maneuvered themselves into this dire situation. Curious to see what elements Eskandari brings in to keep the tension high until the end.

It won't be the two sisters' fault. They play their role convincingly and still have some old pain to deal with among themselves that does not improve the mood. A sophisticated score and the cool blue color scheme further enhance the oppressive feeling. The kick-off is not bad at all.

Yet the film fails to captivate throughout its entire length. Despite the inclusion of some expected and unexpected elements, the film starts to feel a bit drawn out. The elements themselves are interesting, but the hassle surrounding the inserted elements simply takes too long. Curiosity, fascination and tension slowly fade away.

Matt Eskandri got the idea for the film based on his own fear of being trapped in a swimming pool. People with the same fear will undoubtedly experience this film with trepidation. People who don't suffer from this fear will simply see a mediocre film.

12 feet deep movie ending explained: do bree & jonna survive.

12 Feet Deep tells the story of sisters Jonna and Bree trapped under the cover of a public pool. Here's what happens in the film's ending.

Warning! Major spoilers for 12 Feet Deep below

12 Feet Deep is an indie horror film that largely flew under the radar when it was released in 2017, being overshadowed by movies such as Wonder Woman . The film tells the harrowing story of two sisters who manage to get trapped under the cover of a public pool, and are seemingly stuck for the long weekend. The girls fight to survive the elements and each other, leaving audiences on edge until the film's end.

Sisters Jonna and Bree appear to have a bit of a taut relationship above the surface, and tensions come out once they are trapped in the pool. They thought they had a rescuer in the building's janitor who discovered their dilemma, but she decides to torment them instead. To make matters worse, Bree reveals she was diagnosed with diabetes while Jonna was at rehab. If Bree doesn't get her insulin shot in a timely manner, she risks slipping into a diabetic coma.

Related: 2017 Is Officially The Biggest Year For Horror Movies Ever

12 Feet Deep 's ending reveals the fate of both girls and what the experience means for their lives going forward. Here's a breakdown of what happens in the final act of this indie horror film .

Do Bree And Jonna Survive In 12 Feet Deep?

When inspecting the fiberglass cover for weak spots, Bree and Jonna find a small hole. After Bree's engagement ring gets stuck in the pool grate, she realizes it is loose enough to pick up and ram through the hole, hopefully widening it so they can escape. When Bree's health begins to rapidly decline, Jonna musters up the courage to dive down to the bottom of the pool and retrieve the grate. She's able to ram it through the cover's existing hole so that she can widen it and pull Bree and herself to safety.

How Does Bree's Diabetes Affect Her?

After a little badgering from her sister, Bree reveals she was diagnosed with diabetes a few years back. Her blood sugar is rapidly declining. Without regularly taking her insulin shot, she'll fall into a diabetic coma. In 12 Feet Deep 's final act, Bree periodically begins to lose consciousness, but Jonna manages to shake her out of it. When it seems Bree has fallen into a coma, Jonna retrieves the pool grate in the knick of time. Bree receives medical attention when they're free.

What Happens To The Janitor In 12 Feet Deep?

At the beginning of 12 Feet Deep , Clara the janitor is fired for attempting to steal from one of the swimmer's purses. She sticks around after hours and discovers Bree and Jonna trapped under the pool's cover. Instead of immediately freeing them, she decides to mess with them. She turns the sisters against each other, then steals money and an engagement ring from Bree. Although it's not shown on screen, it's heavily implied that once the sisters are free, Jonna kills Clara in self-defense and retrieves Bree's engagement ring.

Related: Horror Movies Aren't Dead In 2020 Just Yet

The Real Meaning Of 12 Feet Deep's Ending

12 Feet Deep is an unorthodox take on the monster movie , as it is all about overcoming personal demons. The girls had an abusive father, which deeply affected their lives and relationship moving forward. The conversations they have while trapped help them to understand how much that truly impacted them. One of those conversations revealed that Bree indirectly caused their father's death by saying "she killed the monster." In the final minutes of the film, a shocked Bree asks Jonna how she got her engagement ring back. She replied, "I killed the monster." This adds weight to the theory that she killed the janitor as well. By killing the metaphorical monsters in their lives, the sisters are able to begin their healing process. It's a very definitive ending, so audiences likely won't be expecting a sequel from 12 Feet Deep anytime soon.

12 Feet Deep (2017)

Published 30 August 2019 · Updated 30 August 2019

Are you dense? Everyone’s left. The pool’s closed for the holiday weekend. We’re stuck in here. We’re gonna die in here.

I hope this isn’t going to be a new trend, otherwise more movies of this type will appear in the future. Like, “ For a Few Degrees More. ” with a blonde vamp trapped in a sauna complex with a malfunctioning thermostat and the possibility that her silicone implants might implode. Or “ Once upon a time … a Hand in a Hole .” with a male couple at a mini-golf course where one of them gets stuck with his hand in a hole, while trying to recover his golf ball, right before closing. Let’s hope that’s not going to happen. “ 12 Feet deep ” is about two sisters who, how on earth is it possible, get stuck under the fiberglass cover of a public swimming pool. And the culprit is a ring that got stuck in a metal grate. Who comes up with this? And I’m still wondering how they could see that little piece of jewelry from so far !!! ??

12 Feet Deep

Women and water.

Women and water. Apparently not a good combination. Just look at the films “ The Shallows ” and “ 47 Meters down “. In the first movie, Nancy ends up on a piece of rock together with a seagull while surfing. And of course, an immense shark is looking at her exposed skin with googly eyes. In “ 47 Meters down ” the sisters Kate and Lisa are trapped in a shark cage while a lot of sharks already see them as a juicy lunch. In “ 12 Feet Deep ” there are no sharks this time, but once again two sisters, Bree ( Nora-Jane Noone ) and Jonna ( Alexandra Park ). And now it doesn’t take place in an exotic ocean but in a standard public swimming pool. And that ‘s also the only location that you are going to see the entire film. Plus a lot of water.

12 Feet Deep

Is “12 Feet Deep” kind of a bore?

I myself am not exactly a fan of swimming pools. I, therefore, assumed that the makers of this film came up with something surprising so it would keep my attention. To be honest, I was already thinking it was going to be boring. On the one hand, it is. Certainly when you see one of the sisters floating around the pool for the umpteenth time looking for a way out. On the other hand, aspects were added that made it interesting anyway. First of all, there is a dispute between the two sisters because of a dark incident in their past that left scars. Both literally and figuratively. And then there’s a cleaning lady whose intentions aren’t exactly to help the two unlucky souls. These two factors ensure that the film, although minimal, became more intense.

12 Feet Deep

Does Jigsaw have anything to do with it?

Tobin Bell appearing in this film was a funny item. Here he was assigned the task of managing the swimming pool. A less sinister role as Jigsaw in the “ Saw ” franchise of course. But for a moment it seemed like he had this demonic expression on his face as he looked over the surface of the water. I wondered if the phrase “ Hello, I want to play a game ” crossed his mind before he hurried home. However, his contribution is limited. So there’s not only the limitation of the number of locations but also that of the number of protagonists who carry the entire film.

12 Feet Deep

Less horror, more drama.

Still, the makers managed to capture the whole in a brilliant way and to create a claustrophobic feeling. A camera that floats constantly between the water surface and the fiberglass cover. A limited breathing space where you see the two sisters staring helplessly at each other, realizing they have ended up in a very awkward, life-threatening situation. When it turns out that one of the two sisters is also a diabetic who urgently needs an injection of insulin, it becomes a fight for life and death. “ 12 Feet Deep ” was given the label horror and thriller. But I don’t think it’s a horror per se. Or you’re terrified of water or confined spaces. And the movie didn’t really fascinate me either. Maybe swimming instructors or professional divers find this fascinating. If they had come up with an ending like in “ Let the right one in “, it might have been an adrenaline-raising movie. I’m sure that for those who have actually experienced this (because apparently the film is based on true facts), it was intense and horrifying.

When I was about 10 my little sister dropped her goggles in our holiday villa pool. It was 10 feet deep so she couldn't reach them so she asked me to get them. The pool had been covered by that time. It was this huge piece of blue plastic stuff that was tied down at all sides of the pool, just loose enough for my sister to be able to pull one of the edges up for me to dive down.

I reached the bottom and felt pretty proud, like heck yeah I'm the cool big sister. The problem arose when I made my way up and noticed it was darker than my way down. Worse was realising my sister…

12 Feet Deep

12 Feet Deep

  • Two sisters are trapped under the fiberglass cover of an Olympic sized public pool and must brave the cold and each other to survive the harrowing night.
  • Bree (Nora-Jane Noone) decides to go for a swim at the Ketea Aquatic Center. The pool manager, McGradey (played by Tobin Bell), later hangs signs around the pool mentioning that the pool is closing up for the holiday. Bree is later joined by her sister, Jonna (Alexandra Park) in the pool and connect over a competition in college. Meanwhile, the janitor of the aquatic center, Clara (Diane Farr) is caught by McGradey attempting to steal from the lost and found. She is later laid off and is told to clean up before leaving. McGradey then eagerly tells all swimmers to leave as they prepare to close. Bree and Jonna reluctantly do so. While packing up, Bree realizes that her engagement ring is missing, after attempting to show Jonna. Jonna sees the ring stuck in the metal grate at the bottom of the pool and both dive in to retrieve it. The manager thinks everyone has left the pool and decides to close up, failing to notice the women in the deep end of the pool. He engages the pool cover and leaves for the day with the two women trapped inside the pool. The women are terrified and unsuccessfully attempt to escape. Shortly afterward, Jonna reveals that she is secretly jealous of Bree's successful lifestyle and recent engagement and that she pulled the ring from Bree's bag and threw it in the pool. Bree is initially angry with her sister but her anger is short-lived. Bree also talks about her past with her abusive alcoholic and drug addicted father. She also opens up about the fire which led to his death. Bree reveals that she is diabetic and requires a shot, or there is a possibility that she might slip into a diabetic coma. The janitor, preparing to leave, is surprised to see the two women trapped underneath the pool cover. Leading the women to believe she is going to help them, she picks up Bree's bag, taking her cash, smartphone and credit card. The janitor then proceeds to blackmail her for the password to her phone and her credit card pin number. She later turns the water heater off. The girls have no choice but to wait out the night. Jonna talks about the deep mental damage from her abusive father with Bree saying, "Just keep reminding yourself that he's dead." The janitor comes back in the morning teasing the sisters again. Jonna, angry at her, leads the janitor to place her ear onto the small hole in the pool cover, subsequently stabbing her in the ear with a sharp shard of tile. The janitor then turns on the automatic pool cleaning system, causing the girls to begin suffocating in chlorine. After a few minutes, she turns this off, realizing the danger in her action. When the janitor leaves again, Jonna apologizes to Bree for her jealousy and keeps blaming herself for the situation they're in. Bree comforts her and forgives her for her wrongdoings. Bree reveals that during the accident which killed their father, she actually prevented her dad from escaping, saying "I killed that monster". The janitor comes back, realizing the error of her ways. She decides to open up the pool cover to let Bree and Jonna out but the pass code she was given by the manager no longer works, leaving the women to remain trapped. She tells the sisters they're on their own and leaves. Bree soon grows very weak and cold, passing in and out of consciousness. After initially refusing Bree's offer to try, Jonna spends her last bits of energy trying to rip off the metal grill on the bottom of the pool, something her sister failed to do. After succeeding, Jonna smashes the fiberglass of the pool cover, allowing them to escape. She then pulled Bree, unconscious, out of the pool and gives her the insulin shot, unsure whether she will survive. The janitor appears in front of them with a gun. She threatens to kill Bree and Jonna after thinking about what might happen if they didn't die in the pool, not wanting to go to prison again. The janitor instead feels sympathetic for the sisters and puts the gun down and gives them their belongings back. Jonna, after calling the police, tells her to leave. Paramedics arrive at the aquatic center and tend to Bree. Jonna gives her engagement ring back, which the janitor blackmailed Bree for with the intention of pawning it. Bree asked how she got it back to which Jonna replies, "I killed the monster", referring back to what Bree said about killing their father.

12 Feet Deep: Discover the Top 10 Shocking Moments of 2024

Life has a peculiar way of plunging us into unexpected territories. In the spirit of plunging into uncharted perimeters, let’s delve into the nail-biting experience that is ’12 Feet Deep’. A thrilling venture that tickles our fears and forces us to confront the chilling thought – what if we were trapped in perilous depths with no immediate help in sight? The movie paints a suspenseful picture that’s bound to keep you constantly on your toes.

Plunging “12 Feet Deep” into the Top 10 Shocking Moments of 2024

The creepy setup: setting the scene for 12 feet deep.

Picture this: You’re basking in a deserted pool setting, swimming to your heart’s content. You’d think it’s a dream, right? Wrong! For when the seemingly innocent scenario shifts towards the sinister, you find yourself entwined in a chilling atmosphere that’s as hair-raising as Sunday night football . That’s ’12 Feet Deep’ for you! An adroit concoction of horror, survival, and dark psychology, promising to keep your heart pounding like a Ghd flat iron smacking against a sheet of metal.

The secluded pool setting might seem like a jab from the left field, but it’s the key moving wheel of the movie. It drums up an element of surprise jumbled with fear, projecting an acute sense of danger that is painstakingly persuasive. The film manages to etch out that disconcerting feeling of being trapped, alone, and helpless in a setting that should otherwise be associated with leisure and relaxation.

Diving “12 Feet Deep”: A Retrospective Account of Inspiration

The punch about ’12 Feet Deep’ is its bold claim of being ‘inspired by true events’. Makes you flinch, doesn’t it? However, the actual artery of truth appears to be a maverick path. You see, there isn’t a straightforward template off which ’12 Feet Deep’ has been crafted. When questioned about the legitimacy, the director clarifies that the narrative idea was one cooked from his own imagination, rather than from a real-life incident. It’s like realizing that the seemingly radio-controlled car you were thrilled about is, in fact, nothing but a Radio Shack miniature.

This fact actuates a unique undercurrent in the film while ratcheting up the tension. It’s the raw unpredictability of the storyline, stripped away from standard trope cages and predetermined plots – disconnected and raw, like the loose ends of a blanket Hoodie . It’s here then, that the film gains its distinctive narrative footing, successfully distancing itself from mainstream storytelling.

The Success-Failure Spectrum — Comparing ’12 Feet Deep’ to Templates

’12 Feet Deep’ attempts to transcend its boundaries, much like ‘Locke’ and ‘Buried’ while trying to sidestep the pitfalls of ‘Tape’, ‘All is Lost’, and ‘Carnage’. In this competitive cinematic track and field, ’12 Feet Deep’ engages in a relay race. Does it take the baton of success or does it pass on the cipher of failure?

The answer dips and sways from a needle-thin margin. Clearly, the film borrows inspiration from these titles, often teetering on the edge of suspense and shock, gleaming with captivating moments. The film lays its cards on the table, aiming a straight shot at capturing the audience’s attention and maintaining a suspenseful tension till the very end.

However, unlike the three aces, ‘Locke’, ‘Buried’ and even ‘Tape’ to an extent, ’12 Feet Deep’ falls short of hitting the bulls-eye. It nibbles into the realm of suspense, it promises terror but, alas, the actual delivery falters as it crumbles under the weight of its own promise. It steps onto the line, but fails to leave footprints on the other side, much similar to the movie On The Line .

The Undercurrents of “12 Feet Deep”: Exploring the Lamina of Writing

In a cinematic soiree like ’12 Feet Deep’, the screenplay acts as the life raft – a pivotal medium to float or sink the show. It’s saddening that in spite of boasting a promising premise, ’12 Feet Deep’ takes a nose-dive when it comes to the screenplay.

The story fails to feature innovative strands that could thread together a compelling narrative to keep the audience gripped. Consequently, the charm of the storyline weakens, which ironically, strengthens the probability of the audience sinking into boredom, much like the ‘BTK Killer’ that camouflages his unsatiated bloodlust behind his mundane exterior. A similar camouflage, touched upon much more deftly, can be found in our review of the Btk Killer .

Where Can You Stream “12 Feet Deep”?

Been bit by the curiosity bug and desperate to uncover the twists and turns of ’12 Feet Deep’? Well, you’re in luck! Grab your bowl of popcorn and nestle into your comfort zone because you can stream ’12 Feet Deep’ on Amazon Prime Video.

Emerging Airborne from “12 Feet Deep”

As the curtain falls on our riveting discussion, one can’t help but revisit the essence of ’12 Feet Deep’. For all its flaws and shortcomings, the film does manage to induce a few chills. It manages to strike a rapport with its audience, to draw them in and get them invested. Yet, it falls short on delivering that compelling element of thrill one would expect from a film of its genre.

Image 7743

Then again, every plunge isn’t the same, right? Diving into the movie ’12 Feet Deep’ remains an experience in itself, swaying between the waves of suspense and the currents of disappointment. It’s a journey that may not always offer smooth sailing, but it certainly gives you glimpses of the monsters lurking beneath the surface.

In essence, ’12 Feet Deep’ attempts to emulate the narrative success of its predecessors but falls short of achieving the metaphorical airborne flight, getting trapped, ironically, in the depths.

12 Feet Deep: Is the 2017 Movie Based on Real People?

Aahana Swrup of 12 Feet Deep: Is the 2017 Movie Based on Real People?

Directed by Matt Eskandari, ’12 Feet Deep’ is a thriller film that follows a pair of sisters, Jonna and Bree, while they’re stuck inside a public Olympic-sized pool underneath a fiberglass cover. As the sisters try to escape from their ill-fated demise, Clara, a pool worker, shows up and makes matters worse for Jonna and Bree. The film, horror in nature, employs claustrophobia as its basic premise for horror. By doing so, the narrative compels Jonna and Bree’s characters to confront their past and work on their relationship.

Starring Nora-Jane Noone, Alexandra Park, and Diane Farr, the 2017 film primarily focuses on childhood trauma but also touches on themes of siblinghood and suicide . Due to the film’s ability to create suspense and terror in a highly probable and mundane setting, viewers might wonder about the story’s connection to real life. If you’re curious about the same, here is everything you need to know about the true origin of ’12 Feet Deep.’

12 Feet Deep is Entirely Fictional

No, ’12 Feet Deep’ is not based on a true story. The film is penned by director Matt Eskandari and co-writer Michael Hultquist. It revolves around two sisters’ tale of survival as they’re stuck inside an indoor swimming pool overnight with no tangible means of escape. Their predicament is then worsened when the pool Janitor, Clara, arrives and decides to use this opportunity to blackmail money out of Bree in exchange for their freedom .

12 feet deep movie reviews

There aren’t any identical real-life events that mirror the premise of ’12 Feet Deep.’ However, it bears some resemblance to the 2015 teenage drowning incident in Victoria, Australia. During Christmas early hours at the Orbost Outdoor Pool, some teenagers found their 19-year-old friend drowned under the pool covers of the establishment. Although the paramedics arrived shortly after, the girl didn’t survive and died at the scene. The similarities between the Orbost Outdoor Pool incident and the events that unfold within the film’s storyline are evident.

As such, it is possible that Eskandari took inspiration from this real-life story to build the foundation of his film. While talking about the inspiration behind ’12 Feet Deep,’ Eskandari told Daily Dead, “It was a bit of tapping into that instinctual fear and an amalgamation of a couple of different events Michael and I came across while researching the film. Suffice it to say, yes, people have gotten stuck in pools before and under a cover. Usually drunk or very unexpected tragic accidents, but it has happened.”

However, an ill-timed pool entrapment isn’t the only horror that plagues Jonna and Bree throughout the film. A few hours into the sisters’ unfortunate situation, a pool worker, Clara, enters the narrative and brings new troubles for the women. Through Clara’s characters and her crooked actions, the storyline explores innate desperation and its effects on human morality.

By employing Clara as a central antagonist, ’12 Feet Deep’ presents the viewers with a tangible and believable antagonist to direct their resentment towards. “She [Clara] isn’t evil or out for revenge. The idea is that she takes advantage of an opportunity offered to her, and things spiral out of her control.” Eskandari told Pop Horror News while discussing Clara’s character. He also went on to add, “In many ways, she is a sort of dark future foil of Jonna, so it was interesting writing their interactions.”

Character arcs and storylines aside, the overall thematic horror present in ’12 Feet Deep’ may also resonate with many people’s real fears and anxieties. The film drops its characters inside a vast empty pool with only a sliver of breathing space between the water and the cover. As such, it efficiently depicts claustrophobia. Claustrophobia is the fear of confined spaces, and according to NHS, UK, it can stem from childhood trauma.

Jonna and Bree both grew up with an abusive father who mistreated them as kids after drunkenly returning home. Therefore, although neither character outright displays any symptoms of claustrophobia, their narratives as a whole are built around this fear. Ultimately, ’12 Feet Deep’ is not based on any singular real-life event. It simply features a believable everyday tragedy and builds upon it by doubling down on its claustrophobic implications. Nevertheless, the storylines and character arcs are simply works of imagination from screenwriters Matt Eskandari and Michael Hultquist.

12 Feet Deep

MAR VISTA ENTERTAINMENT (2017)

Director: Matt Eskandari

Starring: Alexandra Park, Nora-Jane Noone, Tobin Bell, Diane Farr

Apparently loosely based on true events, 12 Feet Deep is the story of two sisters trapped under the fibreglass cover of a swimming pool, alone and seemingly stuck there for a long holiday weekend.

The story revolves around two sisters, Bree (Noone) and Johnna (Park). Bree is leading a happy life with a good job and a clean living fiancé, whereas Johnna is struggling with her life and has just returned from rehab with no clear direction. Unfortunately, they end up getting trapped underwater while attempting to retrieve Bree's engagement ring from the pool drain. The manager, McGradey (Bell), closes up for the night and unknowingly leaves them stranded.

As the two sisters bicker and pick at each other, it is revealed that Bree is diabetic and without her medication will slip into a coma. On top of this, Johnna has had suicidal thoughts. Salvation appears in the form of cleaner Clara (Farr) but this is short-lived – Clara is an ex-con, struggling to survive life and now sees an opportunity to extort the sisters and build a rod for her own back.

The premise for 12 Feet Deep is certainly an interesting one and works for the first few minutes of the sisters being trapped, the panic and bickering naturally flowing as the situation sinks in. However, this soon wore thin as the revelations began to build up with the intention of adding layers to the characters and intensity. The movie really makes an effort to play up the redemption angle and have the situation be a metaphor for the girl’s relationship, it just isn't particularly successful in doing so.

Clara does not pose the most menacing villain, making odd decisions at seemingly every turn. An antagonist with a conscience is nothing new, but at times she seemed brainless – not calling the cops to save the girls but accepting being an accessory to murder? After being physically wounded by the girls, she soon walks this flesh wound off and seemingly doesn’t want further retribution aside from a quick chlorine assault. The re-appearance at the finale just reeked of bad writing. Tobin Bell is in this! Well, actually, he isn’t. Bell is possibly in the movie for four minutes, mumbling and grumbling his way through his lines before disappearing for the holiday weekend. With only four main characters, it was perhaps necessary to add his name to proceedings to pad out the cast list, but his name is clearly used for audience attraction as anyone could’ve played the role. He still looks as creepy and calculating as ever though.

The underwater shots all look solid and the hushed blue tone of the pool area provides a quiet tension to the proceedings. The girls' hands silhouetting through the cover throughout the movie looked great illuminated against the venue's underwater lighting - though does an indoor pool really need a cover? Outdoor pools yes…

12 Feet Deep looks nice but it didn’t grip me as much as I was led to believe that it would. The actresses try hard with what they were given, Noone coming off better, but the story and beats lacked the emotional thud they were after. Good premise, but the movie failed to stay afloat.
