NAEA Research Commission

The NAEA Research Commission was launched in 2012 during the NAEA’s national convention. The Research Commission aims at meeting the research needs in visual arts education. The Commission was launched to fulfill NAEA’s Strategic Plan of 2011-2014. According to the Plan, the Research Commission would be created to conduct research and add new knowledge in the field of visual arts education. The Commission would also share the new knowledge and research extensively.

The specific mandate of the Research Commission is to coordinate and communicate research that addresses the needs of practitioners. The research should address the questions of other stakeholders in the field. In addition, the research will raise the quality of art education in institutions and schools to the highest level possible.

Publications Policies and Procedures

NAEA have several publications policies that include the desk copy policy, review copy policy, reprint permission policy, and subscription claim policy. Each policy addresses a specific aspect of publications and writing. The Desk Copy Policy outlines the procedure for adopting any of NAEA’s title as a textbook in colleges and universities. Art educators receive a refund of the cost of their desk copy if they order for more than 7 copies within 45 days of purchasing the desk copy.

Art educators are required to email the details of the purchase including their name, title, and date of purchase to [email protected]. Alternatively, educators can fax their request to 703-860-2960 with Attention: Desk Copy. NAEA will assess the details, processes the order, and refund the initial cost. NAEA members enjoy a discount when they purchase 10 or more copies from the bookstore.

The Review Copy Policy states that authors of professional publications, editors and publishers can request to review copies of NAEA’s titles via email. The request should include the name of the requestor’s publication and the author, title, and ISBN number of the title. The requestors should provide their mailing address and send their request to [email protected]. NAEA sends a complimentary review copy if the requestor sends a copy of the published review.

The Reprint Permission and Policy outlines that the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) and not NAEA assess all requests to reproduce any material from NAEA publications. The requests include permission to re-use, reprint, digitize or photocopy any content drawn from NAEA publications. The publications listed under the policy include Art Education, NAEA Advisory, books, textual materials on NAEA website, Studies in Art Education, and NAEA News. CCC charges a fee for reproducing NAEA publications and receives the fee on behalf of NAEA.

The center processes requests to reprint material in multiple copies or for multiple users. CCC grants permission to reproduce textual materials and not images in NAEA publications. Individuals and agencies should seek permission from the relevant licensor or copyright holder to reprint images. CCC offers online services and addresses any issues with its services via phone and email.

NAEA allows some members to reprint its publications without a fee. The members include:

* Teachers who prepare free multiple handouts for schools functions or professional events

* Libraries that make online reserves of the materials for students and faculty at no cost

* Individuals that reproduce single copies for personal use

* NAEA-published authors that reproduce and distribute their publications free of charge

All authors who reprint NAEA publications must acknowledge that the materials were reprinted with permission from the National Art Education Association. The acknowledgment should include the copyright date of the material.

Under the Subscriptions Claim Policy, members should send their claims to [email protected]/. Claims of missing issues within the U.S should be submitted within three months of the delivery date. International claims should be submitted within six months. NAEA does not honor any claims beyond the set timeframes. However, members can purchase an issue at the single copy rate after the timeframe elapses if the issue is available. Paper editions of NAEA publications are available for a maximum of two years.

NAEA gives a single hard copy replacement when the received item is damaged. Subscribers get digital replacements if NAEA does not receive any message from the United States Postal Service (USPS) confirming that the returned mailing is available. Subscribers must submit written requests to get a refund for overpayments. In addition, subscribers cannot post-date, back-date, or transfer a subscription.

NAEA publishes high quality printed and digital resources. The authors of the resources include visual arts teachers, arts administrators, librarians, arts researchers, and arts education policy makers or advocacy specialists. Others include university faculty in arts education, arts standards developers, curriculum developers, community and museum arts educators, and historians.

NAEA’s strategic plan guides the process of publishing resources. Agencies do not enjoy any discounts from NAEA. NAEA encourages its members to submit articles for its publications that include newspapers, journals, and monographs. The publications reach more than 24,000 art educators and education leaders in different fields.

Art Education Journal

The Art Education Journal is NAEA’s official journal. The Journal covers a wide range of topics that are beneficial to art educators and other individuals interested in visual arts education. NAEA publishes Arts Education bi-monthly. NAEA members benefit from the partnership between NAEA and Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group in the following ways:

*Members have access to digital and print editions of NAEA News and Art Education. Members can access digital editions on their Blackberry, iPhone, tablet, and Android devices or log in to NAEA’s website

*NAEA members have free access to the digital archives of NAEA News and Art Education. Members can easily search, read and share past issues on the user-friendly digital platform

Designing Our Destiny

Throughout 2022, Americans for the Arts went through a Strategic Realignment Process to redefine our role as a service organization to the arts and culture field. The conversations we’ve had during this process have been enlightening and inspiring, and as we enter a new stage of growth, we’re proud to share the Designing Our Destiny platform for strategic planning and a transformative approach to our work in the new year.

2023 Events Update

During 2022’s Strategic Realignment Process, we worked with members and other stakeholders to identify the specific and unique role of Americans for the Arts within the arts and culture community. While we continue to evaluate and evolve our offerings, here’s the latest update on some of our flagship events, including the National Arts Action Summit, Annual Convention, and the National Arts Marketing Project Conference.
