Alcohol is widely abused across the world and the effects of excessive alcohol intake can be devastating. When not taken in moderation, alcohol can be harmful to the health and social life of the individual, as well as harmful to the individual’s family. These devastating effects can result in alcohol related disease, outcast from social circles and loss of friends and a breakdown in the family.

Excessive alcohol consumption is extremely harmful to the health of a person. Alcohol abuse can lead to heart disease, liver failure and rapid aging. Many deaths are caused by alcoholism. Excessive drinking also increases the decision to take risky actions, including drinking and driving. Drinking and driving causes many deaths every year and is a major problem among those of all ages. Excessive alcohol consumption can also cause memory loss and other psychological issues.

Consuming alcohol at a high rate can also cause social problems. This can include loss of friends and being outcast from your community. This happens because of the bad choices that come with alcoholism and most people do not want to associate with those who drink excessively. It is not just harmful to the drinker, but harmful to their friends and family.

In relation to loss of friends, it is likely that excessive drinking can cause a breakdown in family. Alcoholism is devastating for families. Many times an excessive drinker will not keep up with their responsibilities within the family. This means that they are likely to not finish school or college, lose their jobs and not participate in taking care of their children. This can lead to financial problems and the inability to take care of the themselves of the family.

There are many reasons why excessively consuming alcohol is dangerous and harmful. Drinking in moderation or abstaining from alcohol altogether is important to live a happy and healthy life. Among the effects of drinking alcohol, the most obvious are major health problems, loss of friends and social status and a breakdown in the family unit.

Alcohol's Effects on Health

Research-based information on drinking and its impact.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

Alcohol's effects on the body.

Drinking too much – on a single occasion or over time – can take a serious toll on your health.  Here’s how alcohol can affect your body:

Brain: Alcohol interferes with the brain’s communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination .

Heart: Drinking a lot over a long time or too much on a single occasion can damage the heart, causing problems including:

  • Cardiomyopathy – Stretching and drooping of heart muscle
  • Arrhythmias – Irregular heart beat
  • High blood pressure

Liver: Heavy drinking takes a toll on the liver, and can lead to a variety of problems and liver inflammations including:

  • Steatosis, or fatty liver
  • Alcoholic hepatitis

Pancreas: Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can eventually lead to pancreatitis , a dangerous inflammation in the pancreas that causes its swelling and pain (which may spread) and impairs its ability to make enzymes and hormones for proper digestion .

Cancer: According to the National Cancer Institute: "There is a strong scientific consensus that alcohol drinking can cause several types of cancer. In its Report on Carcinogens, the National Toxicology Program of the US Department of Health and Human Services lists consumption of alcoholic beverages as a known human carcinogen.

"The evidence indicates that the more alcohol a person drinks–particularly the more alcohol a person drinks regularly over time–the higher his or her risk of developing an alcohol-associated cancer. Even those who have no more than one drink per day and people who binge drink (those who consume 4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men in one sitting) have a modestly increased risk of some cancers. Based on data from 2009, an estimated 3.5% of cancer deaths in the United States (about 19,500 deaths were alcohol related."

Clear patterns have emerged between alcohol consumption and increased risks of certain types of cancer:

  • Head and neck cancer, including oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx cancers.
  • Esophageal cancer, particularly esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, people who inherit a deficiency in an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol have been found to have substantially increased risks of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma if they consume alcohol.
  • Liver cancer.
  • Breast cancer: Studies have consistently found an increased risk of breast cancer in women with increasing alcohol intake. Women who consume about 1 drink per day have a 5 to 9 percent higher chance of developing breast cancer than women who do not drink at all.
  • Colorectal cancer.

For more information about alcohol and cancer, please visit the National Cancer Institute's webpage " Alcohol and Cancer Risk " (last accessed October 21, 2021).

Immune System: Drinking too much can weaken your immune system, making your body a much easier target for disease.  Chronic drinkers are more liable to contract diseases like pneumonia and tuberculosis than people who do not drink too much.  Drinking a lot on a single occasion slows your body’s ability to ward off infections – even up to 24 hours after getting drunk.

Alcoholism Causes and Curing Problem Solution Essay

Introduction, dangers associated with alcohol consumption, curing alcoholism, reference list.

Many people seem to have different perceptions about alcohol with many looking at it as a fashion especially in today’s changing world. However people may look at it, alcohol is and remains an addictive drug that is being abused every day by many people. Alcohol may be consumed for various reasons amongst them; relieving stress or evading a certain problem or for social reasons.

However, many teenagers engage in drinking due to peer pressure while other people drink, not for the above reasons, but because they are addicted to alcohol. Despite the dangers associated with alcohol consumption, many people just go ahead and use with many people being aware of these dangers.

One of the major effects of alcohol consumption is physical violence. Heavy intoxications due to alcohol consumption induce acts of violence such as abuse to family members, physical assault to anyone encountered or even killing. However, not all people get violent after consuming alcohol. Another very significant danger of alcohol consumption is the risks it poses to one’s health.

Long term consumption of alcohol increases the possibility of one getting heart related diseases especially heart failure. Failure of the liver is also a common health problem to heavy drinkers. Other health risks include improper functioning of body systems such as the circulatory system. Development of cancer and peptic ulcers is another risk to one’s health.

The brain may as well be permanently damaged. Besides health problems, alcoholics suffer personal problems including inability to control one self’s stability, poor mental alertness, lack of consciousness, inability to coordinate words into a proper speech and slurred vision. Sexual assault is also very common in alcohol abusers. Many people tend to behave in a sexual manner under the influence of alcohol because such people cannot control themselves and even think straight (Zegata, 1999, p. 1).

The initiation of curing alcoholism begins with the alcoholic himself by making that strong resolution of stopping drinking. Making this resolution is very important in helping one initiate the process of healing. One of the major ways of curing alcoholism is from the nutritional perspective.

This involves building nutritional values that leads to zero cravings for any of the stimulating drinks. First of all, fruity juices should be used in the initial stages of the process to get rid of the intoxications already in the system. Use of warm water alongside the fresh juice is also advisable. The juice is essentially useful when the patient craves for alcohol during time which he should be given the juice as a substitute.

With time the patients gets used to taking juice whenever he is craving for a stimulating drink. Certain foods should e avoided as well. For instance, sugary and meaty foods should be avoided since they are good compliments to alcohol. In addition, it is very important to strictly avoid smoking because it increases the desire to take alcohol. High consumption of apples is also highly advised due to its ability to reduce cravings for intoxications including wine as well as cleansing the system.

Besides nutritional interventions, physical exercise is equally important in this process. All this constitutes the natural cure for alcoholism which is a very important step in the whole process of healing from alcoholism. They are importantly required to get the body’s metabolism to normal since most of the cravings to intoxicated drinks are a result of malnutrition (Philips, 2010, p. 1).

Besides the natural method of healing alcoholism using nutrition intervention, counseling is also very essential in the process. One requires a lot of counseling and support from family members and friends as well to keep persuading the patient to continue undertaking medications because not everyone succeeds in the process as many people give up on the medication process and go back to alcoholism before getting cured.

In addition, professional counseling is equally important as the specialist can be able to access the level of alcoholism in the patient, how dependant that person is on alcohol and such information which would help the specialist decide on the most effective ways of curing the patient from alcoholism.

Most of the effective intervention methods involving a specialist should deal with both behavioral and preventive measures especially those that will lead to prevention of stress because, as discussed earlier, stress is one of the major causes for alcoholism.

Basically, psychological counseling is important in preventing the drinking exercise. Therefore, counselors should focus on helping alcoholics deal with life situation in other healthy ways rather than drinking. Such assistance should deal with better ways of handling stress, how to cope with social occasions especially those involving a lot of drinking or how to deal with peers for the youths.

Another very effective way of healing from alcoholism is participating in treatment programs especially those involving group therapy. For instance, one should attend to occasional programs such as educational lectures on alcoholism. One of the most effective programs in curing alcoholism is the alcoholics anonymous which involves gathering of alcoholics in a meeting from where they can talk one on one about their experiences and give their stories on how alcohol has affected their lives.

Through these meetings, patients get to hear how their colleagues managed to quit and this gives them the morale to keep trying the healing process. They also get the opportunity to get advice from their fellow members on how to deal with life situations that drive them to drinking. In addition, support is given in such programs in case one gets the cravings for alcohol. For instance, alcoholics are given specific specialists to talk to whenever they are craving for alcohol.

These programs also may have other recreational activities that are aimed at focusing the alcoholic’s attention away from situational problems which would lead them to heavy drinking. Such activities may include sports or other activities for helping the society such as cleanup activities. Finally, there is the use of residential alcoholism cure programs where alcoholics attend a residential centre for a certain period of time during which various interventions are given (Philips, 2010, p. 1).

Alcoholism is a very serious problem, not only individually, but also from the societal point of view. Quitting alcohol is a problem as well especially if one is trying to do it alone. Therefore, it is important for one to get moral and specialist support in curing alcoholism.

However, for the process to be effective enough, the process should begin with oneself by making that important decision of stopping drinking. This decision does not only involve the mind, but also requires psychological preparedness. A combination of the above mentioned interventions could work miraculously since diet, group support and specialist help are all equally important.

Alcohol has also become a part of any type of celebrations among the adults. In some of the societies, people drink alcohol so that they are able to gel with others and become popular among them.

In India different states have different legal age for drinking. Some have 18 while some have 21. But still the underage youth go to various places and drink alcohol even though it is illegal for them. In Karnataka, some bars and restaurants have legal age as 18 while some have 21.

Self-written story on alcohol

Once there was an old man in a village. He had five children. Out these five, four of them were boys and one girl. The old man lost his life after the birth of the fourth and fifth child who were twins. From then he had to take care of them. They belonged to a very poor family.

There were two eldest sons, then the daughter and after that the two twins. The youngest ones were very small. Despite of their poor economic condition, they would manage to survive by working and taking loan from other villagers. But the old man was always spending the money in drinking.

He used to drink so much that he had become too weak to work. Whatever money he would get from work he spent all of them in drinking. He never contributed in the family earnings. He could not stay without drinking. It was like drinking was more important to him than eating food.

He would often drink and play his drums.  Sometimes he would drink so much remembering his wife that he drank till he fell asleep. Due to this behaviour of the father, the daughter and the two eldest sons had to work very hard. They failed to stop their father from drinking.

The condition became worse when slowly their family started drifting apart. The daughter and two eldest sons started to be involved in wrong doings. This made the old man very upset. He did not expect this from their children. The sons never came back. But the daughter came back to the old man.

He was not ready to accept and forgive her for wrong doings. But as he had no one as his support he had to forgive her. One day the two twins were playing near the river. All of a sudden one of the twins drowned in the river. By the time people came to save him, he died.

This made the old man weaker. He felt he had lost his life. He looked as if he had no life left in himself. The old man had not come out of the loss that his daughter was again involved in wrong things. This time he was more heart-broken than before. He had only one child left with him.

Ways to Do an Essay on Alcoholism

Alcoholism can be treated with counselling, medical treatment, or both. Treatment programs may include detoxification (detox) followed by rehabilitation therapy. Detoxification involves withdrawal from alcohol and should be done under medical supervision to prevent complications from severe alcohol withdrawal syndrome or delirium tremens (DTs).

Rehabilitation therapy helps those who want to stop drinking by teaching coping skills and providing support during recovery efforts. The most common form of rehabilitation therapy is group therapy, in which participants share their experiences with others who have had similar problems with alcohol abuse or addiction.

INTRODUCTION

Since the repeal of the 18 th Amendment in 1933, alcohol consumption has become prevalent among many Americans. Alcohol intoxication is an increasing contributor to emergency room visits wherein individuals present to the emergency department (ED) in an inebriated state,  often with secondary injuries or severe medical co-morbidities related to alcohol poisoning. The ED is a stressful environment with providers working under taxing conditions while triaging difficult cases. Alcohol related visits contribute to this added stress for staff given that intoxicated individuals increase wait times for the ED, use up valuable resources, and have the capacity to act violently towards providers. As one nurse puts it, some intoxicated individuals  present with “an aggressive state, perhaps have been in a fight, blood everywhere, careening  around the place – it can make things very difficult.” [1] To combat these circumstances, thirty-four States including the District of Columbia have implemented a countermeasure recognized as Alcohol Exclusion Laws (AELs).

AELs reduce or cut insurance coverage of certain visits to the ED if the cause of the visit is due to alcohol intoxication. [2] The vast implementation of this law is derived from the idea of individual decision making, that it is an individual’s choice to consume alcohol, and therefore they hold a personal responsibility for their intoxication. By using insurance coverage as a leverage, the law aims at reducing the number of ED visits relating to alcohol intoxication, saving resources, and deterring irresponsible drinking. While the intention behind AELs aims for positive change, it is unethical to use AELs, a form of financial leverage, to address certain problems within emergency medicine.

Stigma is prominent in almost all substance abuse cases including those seen with alcohol intoxication. Many patients feel embarrassment or shame when seeking medical attention for a condition that was brought on by alcohol misuse. A personal account by Jonathan Hunt Glassman, a former alcoholic and NBC contributor, emphasizes on this negative bias. He knows firsthand how unsettling an ED visit can be. He felt demoralized from a superficial prognosis  made by a nurse on his complex alcohol abuse condition, in which the nurse said, “You need to  stop drinking.” [3]

Whether it be from shame or insecurities about an individual’s condition, the stigma behind substance abuse cases in the emergency department and the daunting task of asking for help can turn a lot of patients away from seeking and receiving medical treatment. The implementation of Alcohol Exclusion Laws can amplify this already present stigma. A study conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH) analyzed States that implemented and continued to enforce Alcohol Exclusion Laws and the stigma in those states surrounding alcohol-related ED visits. The result from the study showed that AELs correlated with an increase in stigmatization regarding medical attention for alcohol-related incidents, and that AELs “negatively impact people’s willingness to seek medical care after alcohol-related injuries or  illnesses.” [4] Both the NIH study and the personal account by Hunt-Glassman go on to show that  AELs have the adverse effect of reinforcing the stigma surrounding alcohol cases in the ED.  While the idea behind AELs is in good faith, it contributes to the stigma. This contribution ethically challenges the idea that the emergency room is a space where the treatment of injuries is carried out without biases infringing on such medical care. The mission of EDs is to provide medical care to anyone in need. AELs have the effect of discouraging these patients from seeking help with the unintended consequence of doing them harm.

A point of argument for the implementation of AELs is that it is the individual’s choice to be intoxicated and therefore justifiable that an individual receives less insurance coverage for medical expenses from a preventable intoxication. The idea of it being an individual choice to become intoxicated is one of the strongest supports for these exclusion laws. However, it is unjust to assume that all alcohol intoxications come by choice. Instances that disprove this assumption include both the college party scene and bar scene. Spiked drinks significantly increase alcohol concentration and can cause any responsible drinker to become intoxicated without intention or against their will. Additionally, alcoholic beverages served in various social gatherings like those in or around college campuses may not have a clear percentage of alcohol determination. Liquor containing high percentages of alcohol, such as Everclear which contains up to 190 proofs, are often masked by sweeteners and flavorings. Cocktails like these can cause a person to become dangerously intoxicated without their realization or intention. Some may argue that consuming an alcoholic beverage still holds accountability, that the person should be aware of the potential for a tampered drink, and therefore AELs should remain in use to deter this. However, like any law, AELs needs to have defined restrictions and/or exemptions. If the individual choice argument is used in favor for AELs, then how far reaching can the laws be applied? An attorney who specializes in these exclusion laws believes that AELs often offer more ambiguity than clarification when it comes to insurance policy, which leads to further ways insurance claims can be denied. [5]

In summary, the idea behind the use of Alcohol Exclusion Laws aims to reduce intoxication cases in the ED, however, there are drawbacks and aspects of this law that challenge the ethics of seeking medical care from the emergency department. The present stigma surrounding going to the ED for alcohol-related emergencies is already prevalent in hospitals across the country. When applying AELs, the present stigma may be magnified and further push the idea that seeking help for alcohol-related emergencies is shameful and embarrassing for patients, and therefore should be punished via financial means. Secondly, one of the main justifications for AELs is the idea that it is a deliberate intention to become intoxicated. It isn’t always the intention of individuals to get drunk when they choose to consume alcohol. There are additional factors that may play a part to exonerate a person’s accountability. It is difficult for people to recall the specifics of a situation when they become intoxicated; in some cases, accountability cannot be determined and the used of AELs can become unjustified. Overall, Alcohol Exclusion  Laws try to solve the issue of alcohol incidents in a way that produces more detriment than progress. A method to combat the issue of irresponsible drinking and intoxication in the emergency room within the US should not use AELs and financial leverage as one of its forefronts. In fact, a study that based its findings obtained from the Behavioral Risk Factor  Surveillance System nationwide survey that spanned twenty-four years from 1993-2017,  showed no real impact on binge drinking or increased alcohol consumption. [6] Given the downsides to AELs and its proven non-significant effects, several States have already repealed their AELs. For all these reasons, it would be beneficial to find an alternate method to address alcohol related issues within healthcare.

A glass bottle containing hydrogen water in a darkly lit room.

Does Hydrogen Water Live Up to the Hype?

It’s been said to improve hydration, reduce inflammation, boost mood and more. We asked some experts if the claims were true.

Q: I keep seeing ads for hydrogen-infused water. Can these products do anything for my health?

One woman on TikTok said that it had cured her sore throat and fever. Another wrote that it can help you lose weight, increase energy and strengthen your immune system.

Drink hydrogen water, some product advertisements go on to say, and you’ll enjoy reduced pain and inflammation, improved gut health, superior hydration, increased endurance, a better mood and even slowed signs of aging.

Hydrogen water is made by simply adding more H’s into your H2O. But when it comes to its purported health advantages, researchers are skeptical.

“For almost every study that’s shown a benefit, there’s another study that questions the benefit,” said Dr. Mitchell Rosner, a kidney doctor who specializes in fluid and electrolyte disorders at UVA Health in Charlottesville, Va. Here’s what we know.

What is hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water is often packaged in sleek drink pouches or aluminum cans. Some brands sell dissolvable hydrogen tablets that you can plop into your water, or high-tech bottles that you fill with regular water and then infuse with hydrogen by pressing a button.

Some of these drinks, also called hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-infused water, have added flavors or electrolytes, but the basic product involves regular water plus hydrogen gas molecules, or H2, mixed in.

Because hydrogen molecules are extremely small, they easily dissolve in water, said Dr. Gagandeep Dhillon, an assistant medical director at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. They also don’t create the same fizzy sensation as seltzer or soda. Those contain carbon dioxide, a larger molecule.

Hydrogen is so small and light that it also easily escapes water, Dr. Dhillon said. To ensure the molecules stay put, some brands package their product in special aluminum containers or recommend drinking their product within 30 minutes of opening it.

Doesn’t water already contain hydrogen?

All water molecules have two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, as shown in its chemical name, H2O. But once those atoms combine into one water molecule, Dr. Dhillon said, our bodies can’t make use of the hydrogen and oxygen separately.

The idea behind hydrogen water is that the accessible hydrogen molecules — the ones that aren’t bound to oxygen — can enter our body’s cells and generate an antioxidant effect, Dr. Rosner said.

Most of the touted health benefits, which also include enhanced exercise performance, speedier injury recovery, clearer skin and fewer allergy symptoms, come from the idea that hydrogen has antioxidant effects.

What does the science suggest?

The science backing the health claims of hydrogen-infused water is shaky at best, said Henry Jay Forman, an emeritus professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California. Scientists already disagree about whether supplementing your diet with extra antioxidants can improve your health, he said. And even if hydrogen gas lowers inflammation in lab studies, the same won’t necessarily be the case inside our bodies.

Few studies supporting the drink’s benefits have been performed in humans. And they are small and often contradictory. In one 2020 study of 16 male athletes , researchers found that hydrogen-infused water improved the race times and fatigue levels of the four slowest runners — but not of the four fastest runners — in the group. But a 2021 study of 37 trained and untrained cyclists had different results: Only the trained cyclists benefited from hydrogen-rich water in terms of endurance, speed and fitness when compared with the untrained cyclists.

In a review of 30 hydrogen water studies published in January, Dr. Dhillon and his colleagues set out to see whether the drink had any health benefits. While some of the studies were encouraging, he said, they couldn’t draw any clear conclusions.

“More studies are needed to see if drinking hydrogen-infused water can reduce inflammation, aging or disease,” said Tamara Hew-Butler, a sports medicine researcher at Wayne State University. Dr. Hew-Butler said some companies also sold oxygen-infused water, which your body doesn’t need.

Still, some people say they feel real benefits from hydrogen-infused water. Dr. Forman said this might be because of the placebo effect , in which people feel better because they believe it works.

Is hydrogen water safe?

Although the benefits are murky and drinking too much water in general can be dangerous, Dr. Rosner said that hydrogen-infused water wasn’t linked to any serious health risks.

“Everything I’ve read seems to say there’s no downside,” he said. The Food and Drug Administration considers hydrogen-infused water to be “generally recognized as safe,” as long as the hydrogen molecules make up no more than 2.14 percent of the drink. Determining this percentage can be tricky since companies aren’t required to disclose it on product labels.

Hydrogen-infused water can come with a high price tag — some of the fancy make-it-yourself bottles can cost around $100 — which is why both Dr. Rosner and Dr. Forman said it might not be worth it without more proven benefits.

“If you have $100 and want to improve your health, you’re probably better off buying $100 of fresh fruits and vegetables than two cases of hydrogen water,” Dr. Rosner said.
