Difference Between a BSc & MSc

An MSc is a higher level of qualification and is often used as a stepping stone toward the acquisition of a doctorate.

Bachelor's degrees (sometimes referred to as baccalaureate degrees) are awarded to college students who complete a full 4-year undergraduate curriculum. Most students enter a bachelor's degree program immediately after graduating from high school, although mature students may begin studying for the qualification in later life. To enroll into a BSc program, students must usually possess a high school diploma or GED, SAT or ACT test results, a high school transcript, letters of recommendation and relevant application essays. An Integrated Masters with a PhD (iPhD) is a four-year postgraduate level programme that combines a one-year Masters course with a three-year PhD course. They allow students to familiarise themselves with their chosen topic, research methods and academic writing techniques before embarking on their own independent research project. An Integrated Masters with a PhD is particularly popular with international students and students who initially lack specialised knowledge or research skills.

Introduction

An Integrated Masters with PhD, also commonly referred to as either just an Integrated Masters degree or an Integrated PhD, offers a relatively new way to undertake postgraduate training. They maintain the depth and focus of a conventional PhD but offer a more comprehensive doctoral training experience.

Due to their growing popularity, both the number of universities offering these newer forms of PhD and the number of students applying to them has steadily increased.

This page describes what Integrated Masters with PhDs are, who they are for, their advantages and disadvantages, how they differ from conventional PhDs and how they are structured in terms of programme, eligibility and costs. This page is for you if you are considering applying for an integrated course, or simply want to know more about them.

What is an Integrated PhD?

An Integrated PhD is a four-year postgraduate programme. They involve undertaking a one-year Masters degree (MRes or MSc) in your first year, followed by a three-year PhD programme in your second to fourth year. Although the courses run back-to-back, a student can only progress to the second year if they show satisfactory performance in their first year. The one-year Masters and the three-year PhD are considered separately in terms of qualifications; therefore, a student who completes an Integrated PhD will receive both a Masters degree (MRes or MSc) and a PhD as opposed to a single postgraduate qualification.

The aim of an Integrated PhD is to provide a structured approach to doctoral studies, combining advanced PhD research with formal teaching in relevant subjects, research methods and communication skills.

As Integrated PhDs are relatively new compared to more regular doctoral pathways such as stand-alone or MPhil-upgraded PhDs, some professors informally refer to them as ‘New Route PhDs’.

Difference Between Integrated PhD and Regular PhD

The most significant difference between an Integrated PhD and a regular PhD is the addition of the one-year Masters degree at the beginning of the programme. This results in an Integrated PhD typically lasting four years, as opposed to the three years as with regular PhDs.

Integrated PhDs are structured in such a way that they provide students with a broader range of foundational skills than a regular PhD. The first year introduces you to a combination of taught elements, practical experience and advanced research skills. In a regular PhD this mode of teaching is missing as it is assumed you already have this level of knowledge.

The last significant difference between the two types of doctoral programmes is the ‘group’ aspect associated with the Integrated version. Since the Masters programme also includes other students enrolled in Integrated PhDs, you will have a small cohort with whom you will work closely alongside during your studies.

Who are Integrated PhDs suitable for?

Integrated PhDs can be an effective pathway for any student, but they stand out in two situations:

Scenario 1: International Students

The Higher Education system differs across countries , although not by a large amount, enough to where an unfamiliar student may struggle, especially when working independently. An Integrated PhD allows you to adapt to the UK education system by offering a more guided and hands-on approach to your learning and research process before you embark on your three-year research project.

It also has visa benefits. If an international student seeking a Masters degree in the UK already knows they want to follow it up with a PhD, enrolling in an Integrated PhD will save them from having to leave the country and re-apply for a visa after completing their initial postgraduate degree.

Scenario 2: Lack of undergraduate research experience or a relevant Masters degree

An Integrated PhD is useful for students who have academic abilities but lack the necessary background to be considered for a standard-route PhD. This usually occurs under one of three scenarios:

• The applicant is currently an undergraduate student or only holds a Bachelor’s degree,
• The student has a Masters degree, but in a subject only loosely related to the discipline they wish to pursue at doctoral level,
• The student has a relevant Masters degree, but the programme lacked a research focus, leaving the student with underdeveloped research skills.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Integrated PhD

The advantages of an Integrated PhD are strongly linked to the international and inexperienced students they cater for. They offer students an effective means of gaining more confidence, knowledge and research skills in their field before starting a doctorate, and also provide visa benefits to international students who will be undertaking prior postgraduate study.

Integrated PhDs also enable students the possibility of receiving funding for the Masters phase of their programme, as will be explained in more detail in the ‘Funding Opportunities’ section.

Integrated doctorates have no obvious disadvantages, but are generally not suitable for those who already have a Masters degree or well-developed research skills in their chosen field. For these students, the additional costs and duration of an Integrated PhD can be avoided by opting for a traditional PhD for which they will already be suited for.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

The programme of study is naturally divided into two parts, the first for your Masters studies and the second for your PhD studies.

Your Masters studies will usually be divided into 180 module credits, half of which will focus on taught components and the other half on research components.

The modules will be tailored to your course, but they will include a variation of:

Taught modules:

• Subject-specific module – You choose one or two modules from a predefined list of topics within your subject area. Your selection should reflect the research area you want your PhD to focus on.
• English and Communication – Academic language and communication skills will be taught to prepare you for the ‘writing-up’ phase of your doctorate. A common misconception is that this module is similar to the English language requirement tests required to apply to a iPhD. In reality, the module will focus on learning how to critically evaluate research sources, write abstracts, literature reviews and conclusions, communicate in lab-based environments and present to audiences.
• Research Techniques  – You’ll receive in-depth training to familiarise you with the different research methods and analytical techniques available to modern researchers.
• Research Proposal Development  – You’ll work with your intended PhD supervisor to prepare a research proposal for your three-year PhD research project.

Research Modules:

You will carry out one or two small laboratory research projects under supervision for practical experience.

If you complete these modules with satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Masters degree and will be considered for the following three-year PhD programme.

Each university has its own process for making this consideration, but most invite you to an interview with the supervisor you wish to conduct research with. The interview is used to confirm that you have acquired the specialised knowledge and research skills expected at masters level, and beyond that of someone capable of completing doctoral study.

If your interview goes well, you will be enrolled in your PhD programme. From this point on, your path will be the same as a regular PhD student. During your doctoral phase, you will conduct independent research and laboratory work for two years, followed by a final year of writing up and formally submitting your findings as a thesis. Your thesis, expertise and research competence will be assessed in an oral examination known as a viva. Upon successful completion of your viva, you will be officially awarded a PhD, and your studies will come to an end.

It should be noted that aside from the above, your university may offer optional modules which can equip you with a wide range of transferable skills.

Eligibility

Entry requirements for an integrated masters degree in the UK will vary from university to university, but the typical requirement is an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted.

If you are an international student and English is your second language, most universities will require proof of your English language proficiency through an exam certificate. It’s best to check directly with the universities which certificate types they accept, but the most common English language qualification requirement is an IELTS certificate, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each category.

The typical annual tuition fee for an Integrated PhD in the UK is £4,712 per academic year for home/EU students (or £2,356 for part-time study) and £19,596 per academic year for international students (or £9,798 for part-time study).

As with all doctoral programmes, there are likely to be additional costs associated with your studies, such as bench fees for lab work, travel costs for collaborating and potential write-up fees for students who need more time to submit their thesis. Funding Opportunities

You can obtain funding for Integrated PhDs in the same way as for regular PhDs. Funding is usually provided by one of the seven UK Research Councils  and research charity organisations such as the  Wellcome Trust ; grants, scholarships and funded opportunities can be found directly in our searchable database .

Funding can either be partial (tuition fees only) or full (tuition fees and living costs). Most funding providers also cover the tuition fee for the Masters degree programme due to being integrated with the PhD, however, you should confirm this on a case-by-case basis.

As with regular PhD funding, the fully-funded opportunities are generally limited to home and EU students.

It’s also worth noting that PhD programmes which include an integrated Masters degree are eligible for a Doctoral Loan , even if you already have a postgraduate Masters degree from a previous university. Applications for Doctoral Loans must be made directly to Student Finance England and you must first be registered for a full doctoral degree. Due to application restrictions, you won’t be able to apply for a separate Postgraduate Masters Loan for the integrated Masters phase of your degree.

Taught courses

Master of arts (MA) or Master of science (MSc)

• Taught courses most commonly come in the form of a masters degree
• One to two years full time
• Two to three years part time

Research degrees

Doctorates (PhDs)

PhDs can be started immediately after your first degree or a masters course. It’s more common for students of sciences than arts to start a PhD straight after an undergraduate degree. They involve research into a chosen topic under the supervision of an experienced academic.

• Three to four years full time
• Four to six years part time
• Considered very intellectually challenging
• Includes a thesis of around 100,000 words and usually an oral presentation.

An EngD (engineering doctorate) is an alternative to a PhD for students looking for a career in engineering. Like those studying for a PhD, EngD students will conduct in-depth research. However, they will also spend up to 75% of their time gaining direct experience in the industry by working for a company.

Masters programmes by research (including MSc, MPhil, MRes)

These are known as MRes (master of research), MPhil (master of philosophy), MSc by research or MA by research. Put simply, these are masters programmes that rely heavily on your own private research, supervised by an experienced academic.

• Two to four years part time
• Usually involves training in research methods, but less teaching than a taught masters
• Similar in structure to a doctorate, only shorter
• Includes the production of a thesis and usually an oral presentation
• Good preparation for a PhD
• Fees usually lower than for taught masters.

You should think carefully about what kind of research degree you want. If you want only a taste of research or are doing it only to improve your chances at a specialist registrar interview, go for the MSc. This is usually a one year taught course with an experimental project and is a good way of learning the basics of science. If you wish to do more detailed science and are considering a career in academic medicine, then think about a PhD. This will mean more time commitment (at least three years) and more intellectual commitment. The compromise degrees are the MD or MS. These usually require two years of work and therefore permit more in-depth research than the MSc. The MD or its equivalent is popular among medics. When deciding which degree to go for you should check all the various regulations and also the fees that may be entailed.

At the end of the day the choice is up to you. The key questions are: why are you doing research and how much time and energy do you want to commit to it?

Elizabeth Hartney, BSc, MSc, MA, PhD is a former writer for Verywell Mind covering addictions. BA、BSc、MA、MSc的区别，你了解吗？

英、美高等教育体系和国内相比，有着很大的差别，因此同学在选校和申请时一定要对于学历、学位，以及各种花里胡哨的学位名称和概念都有很清晰的认识，以避免造成选择上的失误。

壹 英国高等教育学位体系

Foundation——Foundation Degrees

预科：入学成绩不够，需要先上1或2年预科，本科和研究生都有预科。

Pre-Sessional English

语言课：入学成绩够，语言不够，需要通过学校内部的语言课。

Undergraduate ——Bachelor’s Degrees

本科：毕业后获得学士学位。

Postgraduate——Postgraduate Degrees

研究生：毕业后获得硕士学位。

PhD——Doctor Degrees

博士：毕业后获得博士学位。

英国大学学位证书和我国的学位证，毕业证政策是不一样的，一般而言，英国的毕业证书有以下两种：

Diploma——结业证书

Diploma意思就是你完成了英国本科或者硕士的学习课程，有资格参加毕业典礼了，但是因为没有通过考试或论文不达标，不满足Degree认证要求，所以只有一个结业的证明。在国内，Diploma无法获得认证。

Degree——学位证书

英国正式学位证明，Degree表示学术上通过了英国考试以及认证，获得了Degree证书。在国内，Degree可以获得认证。

PG Dip/PG Cert

另外，英国的教育系统中，Postgraduate Diploma和Postgraduate Certificate也和Master属于一个学术等级。但前两者比Master少30-60个学分，全日制学习时间比Msc全日制学习时间短，一般为9个月或6个月。所以，在回国认证的时候是不能被认证成硕士学位的。

选择PG Dip和PG Cert的学生可以通过此类课程申请心仪的Master学科，本科成绩不太理想或者专业不对口的学生通常会通过这样的过程去申请到自己理想的硕士课程及大学。

Bachelor of Arts (BA) 文学学士

Bachelor of Education (BEd) 教育学学士

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) 工程学学士

Bachelor of Laws (LLB) 法律学学士

Bachelor of Music (BMus) 音乐学士

Bachelor of Science (BSc) 理科学士

英国学位等级划分有：1等学位，2:1学位，2:2学位和3等学位。它的等级划分要求如下：

70分以上：First honours Degree

60-69分：2:1或者Upper-second Class Degree

50-69分：2:2 或Lower-second Class Degree

45-50分：Third Class Degree

40-44分：Ordinary Degree(Pass)

不到39分：无学位 Fail

授课型的硕士——Taught Master Courses

以MA为主，一般需要12个月的时间，在这一年内都是修读课程不做研究，属于Professional Degree或Vocational Degree。授课类型的硕士包括MSc，MA，MBA，LLM，MEng等。

研究型硕士——Research Programs

一般是在导师的指导下针对某项课题进行专门的研究，学习方式更为独立。课程分为教学和研究两部分，以项目研究为主，但同时也会有授课部分。研究和授课的比例大概是3:1，学制一般为两到三年。

Distinction-优等生： 全年平均分，包括毕业论文的成绩70% 以上。

Merit-优秀学生： 全年平均分，包括毕业论文的成绩60%-70%。

Pass-通过： 全年平均分，包括毕业论文的成绩50%-60%。

美国颁发的学位有四类：副学士、学士、硕士和博士；按学位性质，美国有学术(研究)学位和专业(专科)学位两种；美国大学对于社会有杰出贡献者还颁授荣誉学位，此种学位并不反映学术成就，只是一种荣誉。美国各级别院校提供的学位如下：

Doctorate granting Universities-综合性研究大学

这类学校在美国高等教育系统中占有主要地位。有私立和公立之分，代表了美国大学的顶级研究水平，获得来自美国联邦政府研究机构和私人提供的的大量研究经费。它提供学士Bachelor、硕士Master、博士Doctor等学位；专业齐全，多达几十个系，上百个专业，几百个专业研究项目。

Master Granting Universities-地区级大学

这类学校也称regional university，提供副学士、学士、硕士学位，硕士多侧重职业教育，小班授课，教学上研究任务不是特别重，比较注重实用，毕业后好找工作。

Liberal Arts Colleges-文理学院

文理学院主要提供学士学位，少数文书学院提供硕士学位，教学以文理学科为主，注重全面综合教育，培养贵族精英。因此学费也相对较高，教学质量得到认证，注重培养行业领袖人才。与综合大学不同的特点是小班授课，校园设施条件好、安全、有利于学习。

Community College-社区大学

社区学院主要提供副学士学位，很少学校提供学士学位。社区学院提供两类课程，一类是通识课程，毕业后转入四年制大学，也成为一些学生进入美国名校的“跳板”；一类是技术类课程，毕业后直接就业。

英、美在硕士学制上有一定区别，美国的MSc项目则通常是2年的纯授课、纯研究，或者授课研究二合一，通常包含基于所学内容的研究和论文答辩。在英国MSc基本等同于授课型硕士，学制通常是1年，少部分为2年，包括授课、考试和占1/3比重的毕业论文或项目。另外，美国的院校也有非常多的跨学科课程，甚至文理结合课程也是存在的，一般情况下，看你选择的方向，来发放学位。

Transition from your bsc to a msc programme.

Have you wondered if it is possible to continue directly with a master’s programme right after finishing your bachelor’s at WUR? In this blog, we will share some information about transitioning from undergraduate to postgraduate studies at WUR.

You have finished your bachelor’s studies so now you have your options open. You can either try to enter the work-life or you can decide to continue with a master’s programme. If you go for the second option, then there are some aspects to consider. For example, if you want to move to another place or if you should stay at the same university where you did your bachelor’s.

Continuing your master’s at the same university

A benefit to staying in the same university is that you already created your network and you know how the institution works. Also, since you have been living in Wageningen for around three years, you are familiar with the campus and the city. If you are one of those students that are looking to get into research and maybe get a PhD, it can be helpful to have the right connections with a teacher or a pre-existing relationship with the university.

If you decide to continue studying at WUR, you can start your master’s programme immediately after completing your bachelor’s degree. You can enroll on the 1st of the following month (if the BSc programme you studied is relevant to the MSc you have chosen).

But do not wait until the last minute to do this! You should start the procedure in advance since the moment you graduate from your bachelor’s will determine how to enroll for the WUR master’s programme. All the steps that you need to follow to make this switch can be found on the website .

Due to the effects of COVID-19 measures on education, WUR offers leniency in the bachelor-before-master rule to students.

The bachelor-before-master rule states that students have to obtain a full bachelor’s degree before they can start a master’s programme. However, if students experience such a study delay to finish the bachelor’s programme in time because of COVID-19 measures, they can still register for a master’s programme at WUR (under certain conditions). Let’s move now to some of the most common questions that can arise when you start to think about your master’s studies:

What is a master’s degree?

A master’s degree is a graduate-level study that you can do after finishing your undergraduate study i.e. your bachelor’s degree. It is a high level of education in which people that have completed the studies are generally thought to have a thorough understanding of their field of study. At WUR, a master’s degree takes around two years to complete.

Is it better for my professional life to have a master’s degree instead of a bachelor’s degree?

This really depends on what type of job you would like to have and what you want to achieve. A lot of jobs don’t ask for you to have a master’s degree but there are some fields that require higher levels of education for you to advance your career. For example, Food Technology is a field where they encourage you to continue with a master’s programme .

What are the key differences between a BSc degree and an MSc degree?

A bachelor’s degree mainly focuses on giving you the tools to build fundamental skills and provide you with a lot of core knowledge. In a master’s degree, you take a step up which means that your studies will be more independent and self-driven. You will engage in more advanced research methods and can specialise in the topic that interests you. That can also mean that you will require longer hours of self-studying.

Should I start with my master’s degree right after my bachelor’s?

There is no perfect answer to this question. But I can tell you the two sides of it. If you continue right away, you will probably still be used to going to classes and studying for exams. This might make it an easy transition. It can also help you define earlier what your goals are. On the other hand, you might also be tired from your studies and need a change of scene. Getting some work experience gives you an advantage afterwards and you will be more sure of what you are actually looking for in a master’s programme.

Do BSc and MSc programmes have the same number of European credits (ECTS)?

At Wageningen usually, bachelor’s programmes are comprised of 180 ECTS and Master’s programmes of 120 ECTS. You can read more about this system in our blog about earning credits .

Discover your options

Whether you are in the final year of your bachelor’s or if you are already working and thinking about studying a master’s, it is nice to get a general idea of what your options are. If you choose to stay/start at WUR, I suggest you do some research about the programmes and the opportunities you get to develop experience in your field. Talk to master’s students, visit an open day and discuss your ideas with your study adviser. And most importantly before you make a decision, make sure you’ve given it enough thought.

PhD right after B.E./B.Tech/BSc vs MSc/MS

Many people out there have this question in their mind as to whether one can do a PhD in physics right after their engineering degree, is it possible, how to go about it, is it a viable option compared to MSc and lot more. I hope to clear some of those concerns here in this article. I hope you enjoy reading it and find it useful and informative, 1,2.3..initiate!

Disclaimer: This article also applies to people who recently did their or are doing BSc in physics. Please kindly note, this is my point of view that I formed, after my recent experiences and journey going from B.E Mechanical and minor in physics to PhD in physics.

PhD after B.E./B.Tech:

Yes! One can do a PhD in physics right after your engineering degree. You see most universities in US, Canada and very few in Europe, UK, Australia and Japan have 1-2 years of coursework during their 5-6 year PhD typically. In India, the topics that are usually taught in our class 11 and 12 and introductory physics in the first year of undergraduate degree are mostly equivalent to BSc Physics degrees in the above countries I mentioned. So it won’t be huge leap into a completely new world which you can’t get comfortable with.

But to get admitted and aim for good universities with a great professor working in your field of interest and obtain good funding (which is approximately, 1500$ USD per month after taxes and can save at least 600-700$ USD per month after expenses), one need to either start collaborating and working with on campus physics professors or if it’s a purely engineering college, do take a gap year and obtain a research position, get experience(it’s strongly advicable for the former scenario too), reference letters and then apply to the universities. More on the applications, please refer to my other article , which has a link to a nice video too on a talk that I gave to my alumnus institute, BITS Goa, juniors.

Next, on various eligibility requirements and some potential draw back taking this route, in US universities, you can directly apply as I said in the above paragraph but in most European and few Canadian universities, where professors admit you rather than the physics department as a whole, they strictly require an MSc in physics(on a personal note, I couldn’t get into Perimeter, Max Planck because not having an MSc degree), so if you are fine with joining US universities and fine with letting go few very great potential opportunities, then yeah PhD is the right way to go about.

Compared to MSc/MS:

The other route one can take is, MSc/MS and then PhD, the advantages would be, it would increase your chances in getting admitted to great universities with great programs, you can choose to not to do the some of the basic courses in your first 1-2 years of PhD and use that extra time to do more research and potentially graduating in 4 yrs in US and Canada and may be also publish more research papers and journal articles, which could help in your future hunt on post-doctoral positions (but please take the second point with a pinch a salt as some universities don’t let you skip the basic courses during the first 1-2 yrs of your PhD and it depends on the personal capabilities of doing quick and effective research to be able to do produce quality and quantity of papers). PhD would also be an obvious economically viable option, as you are guaranteed of being paid unlike MSc/MS where very few places pay and in limited amount and numbers.

But an MSc/MS will also help opening a lot of great and decent opportunities in EU, UK, Australia and Japan! Also it’s best you do an MSc/MS when you don’t know your area of interest, as PhD can sometimes be very specific and ask for your specific interests and while admitting, they see if you have any previous research experience in that field.

Disadvantages would be potentially wasting money (especially MS, I agree some EU universities have no fee but they don’t fund your living costs which amounts to be expensive) and time (because mostly you might have to re-do courses during your first 1-2 yrs of PhD) while doing it, where it can be spent doing a 1 year research assistant-ship and then applying for PhD directly.

Conclusion:

Who should go for phd directly:.

If you believe your fundamentals in physics are strong or at least decent, have figured out your area of interest and have enough research experience(if you are doubtful about it, then talk to your seniors who have gone to do PhD in physics or post it on the Facebook groups like MS in US/blogs etc like physics after engineering, by sharing your profile) and also have financial concerns, but remember you might have to take a 1 year gap, where in you would get paid very little to none, but if you work hard, it will pay up later due to great amount of funding in US, EU, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan.

Who should go for MSc/MS:

Very new to physics, not clear about your research interests, don’t want to miss out on potential places like Perimeter, Max Planck and many other great EU places, have the financial back up, want to increase your chances of being admitted to top schools in physics, then go for it!

What is a Clinical Microbiologist?

How to apply

Eligibility requirements .

You must have a PhD in microbiology or a related field prior to the start of your training which commences July 1 of each year.

You must also have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

You may apply during the final year of your PhD, but any offer of acceptance will depend you successfully completing and defending your thesis prior to the start of the program.

Interviews : typically held during the last two weeks of October.
