Parsons Communication Design Publications 2021-2022

Using html/css as publication design framework, alternative to indesign project as 908a.

A book is the product of an intricate patchwork of systems: from a font, with its embedded metrics and variable font axes; to a function, which calculates the arrangement of words in each line of a paragraph; to a template, which defines the repeated placement of text and images. Each of these systems is a product of design. Each was created with specific intentions in a particular historical moment and carries with it inherent cultural associations and biases.

This book — 1, 10, 100 Years of Form Typography, and Interaction at Parsons — commemorating the history of design education at Parsons, is built on a carefully selected set of lightweight, interconnected technologies; proposing an alternative to the current market-dominent monolithic software tools for designing books.

Content is managed through a flat-file CMS, Kirby, where Jarret Fuller wrote and edited the text directly using the human-readable markup language, Markdown. Caspar Lam organized data about the program in tables that are stored in a structured text format, TSV. Andrew and E Roon designed browser-based layouts using HTML and CSS that gave form to the content as it was written. The entire book exists as a constantly updated preview on a website, which can be used to generate a PDF on-demand using a renderer, Prince.

The final book is a collection of 239 Markdown files, 10 templates, 1,011 lines of CSS, and was generated from the command line in 123.25 seconds on October 19, 2021 at 10:27am.

Winner of the AIGA 50 books/50 covers competition.

In 2021, the Parsons Communication Design program relaunched its annual thesis publication, Framework 101 . The publication is built on the same technological foundation as its predecessor, inheriting its software architecture.

The new workflow enabled a book with 214 co-authors — graduating students — to write content directly to the book simultaneously. The cover of the book celebrates each of these authors by featuring their last names.

Additional Description

Scope and content of collection.

The Design and Technology theses in this collection are available solely in the form of electronic records. Each thesis is accompanied by an abstract, or "designer's description," written by the student. Most theses have a written component in which students describe their projects in detail. Some also include photographs, diagrams, and video recordings. The collection inventory should not be considered a definitive list of all program graduates for a particular year. Some students choose not to place their thesis with The New School Archives. Additionally, for pre-2018 theses, The New School Archives may not have received all theses submitted by students in a particular year. For confirmation of graduation from the MFA Design & Technology program, it is necessary to verify with the university's Office of the Registrar.

Language of Materials

All materials in English.

Access Restrictions

Theses are available in electronic form only. Most of the collection is open for research use. For newly accessioned theses, some authors have requested that their theses not be made available online for one year from the date of submission, but have indicated that their theses may be viewed onsite in the New School Archives. In other instances, authors have opted to make their theses completely unavailable for viewing until one year from the date of submission. Please contact [email protected] for appointment.

Use Restrictions

In accordance with The New School's Intellectual Property Rights Policy, copyright is held by each thesis's respective author. The responsibility to secure copyright permission rests with the user.

Historical Note

[The MFA DT thesis] is a systematic investigation of a research question based in the domains of art, design or technology. It requires students to identify an area of study, research its major assumptions and precedents, explain the significance and originality of their undertaking, set forth the process and method for proposing solutions, create prototypes, and offer a conclusion through the production of a body of work. The finished project must evidence originality and experimentation, critical and independent thinking, appropriate organization and format, and thorough documentation. The Thesis Project can take many forms, from fine art works, to soft/hardware tools, interactive installations, online experiences, or social experiments. It should demonstrate the application of ideas within an applied context, whether it be in the areas of design, art, commerce, or theory." [2]

Organization and Arrangement

Arranged chronologically by year of submission and within each year in alphabetical order.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The theses from 2001-2017 were submitted to the archives by program administrators from the Parsons MFA Design and Technology Department. As of 2018, electronic theses are submitted to the archives by students in the Parsons MFA Design and Technology program, with support from program administrators.

Caspar Lam, Director E Roon Kang, Associate Director

Design is intensely solitary in execution but extraordinarily public in its dissemination and dialogue. Designers learn to work between these antipodal modes through a cyclical practice of making, critique, and reflection. For two years now, these activities have been reorganized by conditions brought forth by a global pestilence. The Class of 2023, and indeed all designers, have rediscovered how vital community is for the discipline to flourish.

This past year marks the beginning of a slow transition back to physical community and making. In this period of anticipation, questions about identity, memory, representation, and future are foremost in our students’ minds. But looking more closely, these questions are related to perennial questions about the qualities and concerns of the human person. Rather than being a set of projects meant solely for consumption in the “next thing,” these projects stand as an archive of thousands of conversations about what matters to these specific students in 2023 connected to each other through their decision to study at Parsons.

The thesis begins with a question, problem, or dilemma, and responds with design. Over the course of a year, students practice research, ideation, prototyping, iteration and presentation in the service of something that matters to them. A successful project does not only show a capable designer, but also someone who has the curiosity to learn independently about a subject outside of design, as well as the tenacity to learn whatever it takes to convey a message or solve a problem.

For those who continue to see making as a way to learn rather than just a means to an end, design is a lifelong framework to see the world and their place in it. Our strongest hope is that students will take with them a habit of wonder, tenacity, and learning. Their thesis projects are the first proof that they can.

Parsons School of Design Debuts 2021 Graduate Festival

Every May, graduates from throughout Parsons showcase their unique and cutting-edge thesis presentations and capstone projects at the Parsons Festival , which celebrates creativity, innovation, and sustainability. While this year’s festival, like last year’s, is completely virtual due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the exceptional student work on display highlights students’ resiliency, flexibility, and creativity, with projects that are focused on sustainability, inclusivity, social justice, and more.

“Our amazing 2021 graduates are completing their studies at Parsons remotely, and for the second year in a row, we will showcase their thesis collections in a bold virtual exhibition,” says Rachel Schreiber, Executive Dean of Parsons School of Design. “The added bonus of the extraordinary work that they’ve created for this virtual festival is that it can be shared with an even larger and more geographically-diverse audience in the art and design community than ever before, and for a longer period of time. Despite the adversity presented by COVID-19, this festival embodies our students’ best qualities as designers, artists, strategists, and scholars who are committed to creative problem solving, critical thinking, and social justice.”

The virtual exhibition was designed and developed by communication students in a semester-long class taught by Lucille Tenazas, Henry Wolf Professor of Communication Design. In addition to the online exhibition, the windows on the ground floor of the Parsons building at 2 W. 13th street have been transformed into a video installation featuring work from students, which will play on a loop. The projection design was also created by the Communication Design students who designed the festival portal.

This year, Parsons is also participating in NYCxDesign, where student work will be featured in a digital yearbook, as well as on LinkNYC campaigns throughout the city. Students have also been selected to present their work as part of a residency program with Hudson Yards and ARTSThread.

Additionally, the MFA Textiles program is hosting their graduate show, Emerging Fibers , at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen until Monday, May 18th. Guests will be able to experience the work of the Textiles students in an interactive atmosphere that adheres to all COVID-19 guidelines.

Parsons Festival is live now, and will continue to be updated with more student work from programs throughout the summer.

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M.
