What is the difference between a resume and a CV? When should you use a resume, and when is it better to use a curriculum vitae?

The primary differences between a  resume  and a  curriculum vitae (CV)  are length, what is included, and what each is used for. While both are used in job applications, a resume and a CV are not always interchangeable.

CV vs. Resume: What's the Difference?

Most resumes in the United States are competency-based : they are personal marketing documents intended to showcase the candidate’s skills, notable achievements, and work experience to the greatest advantage.

U.S. curriculum vitae , submitted for jobs in academia, scientific research, and medical fields, are credential-based , providing a comprehensive (and often lengthy) listing of one’s education, certifications, research experience, and professional affiliations and memberships.

A  curriculum vitae  (CV) provides a summary of your experience and skills. Typically, CVs for entry-level candidates are longer than resumes—at least two or three pages. CVs for mid-level candidates who have amassed numerous publications tend to run much longer.

CVs include extensive information on your academic background, including teaching experience, degrees, research, awards, publications, presentations, and other achievements.

CVs are lengthier than resumes and include more information, particularly details related to one’s academic and research background.  

A  curriculum vitae summary  is a one-to-two-page, condensed version of a full curriculum vitae. A CV summary is a way to quickly and concisely convey one’s skills and qualifications. Sometimes large organizations will initially ask for a one-page CV summary when they expect a large pool of applicants.

What to Include in Your Curriculum Vitae

Your curriculum vitae should include your name, contact information, education, skills, and experience.

In addition to the basics, a CV includes research and teaching experience, publications, grants and fellowships, professional associations and licenses, awards, and other information relevant to the position you are applying for.

Start by making a list of all your background information, and then organize it into categories.

A  resume  provides a summary of your education , work history, credentials, and other accomplishments and skills. There are also optional sections, including a  resume objective  and a  career summary statement .

Resumes are the most common document requested of applicants in job applications.

A resume should be as concise as possible. Typically, a resume is  one page long , although sometimes it can be as long as two or three pages.

Resumes often include bulleted lists to keep information concise.

Resumes come in a few types, including  chronological ,  functional , and  combination formats . Select a format that best fits the type of job you are applying for.

Whether you are writing a CV or a resume, there are a few helpful rules you should follow. It's important to show the hiring manager how you are qualified for the job, what you have to offer the organization, and why you'd be a terrific candidate to interview.

Match your resume or CV to the position.  This is most important when writing a resume, but it applies to a CV too. Make sure that you highlight your education, work experience, and skills as they relate to the particular industry or job.

In a CV, for example, if you are applying for a job in education, you might want to put your teaching experience at the top of your CV. In a resume, you might include only the work experience that relates directly to the job you’re applying for. You can also include  keywords  from the job description in your resume or CV. This will show the employer that you are an ideal fit for the position.  Here's how to match your qualifications to a job .

Use a template.  You may want to use a template to structure your  resume  or  CV . This will give your document a clear organization, which will help the employer quickly see your qualifications and experience.

Proofread and edit.  No matter whether you use a CV or resume, you need to thoroughly  edit your document . Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. If you can, ask someone to proofread it for you. It can be hard to catch your own mistakes.

Make sure your format is uniform—for example, if you use bullet points in one job description, use bullet points in all your job descriptions.

• Choose the right format for your needs. Your industry, experience, and desired role will inform your choice of resume format—e.g., chronological, functional, or combination. See sample resumes, organized by occupation and industry,  here . 
• Write for both robots and humans. Your resume needs to get past the  applicant tracking system  and grab the attention of the human being on the other end. These  resume writing tips  will help you craft a document that appeals to both software and the company's Human Resources department.
• Know what to include and how to format the information. These  sample CVs  provide a helpful guide;  this piece  offers tips for writing your very first CV.
• Choose an appropriate format. Make sure you choose a  curriculum vitae format that is appropriate for the position you are applying for. If you are applying for a fellowship, for example, you won't need to include the personal information that may be included in an international CV.

While CVs in the U.S. are used primarily when applying for  academic , education, scientific, medical, or research positions or when applying for fellowships or grants, candidates for international jobs may be required to submit “CVs” for almost any type of job they apply for.

International CVs

In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, employers may expect to receive a “curriculum vitae” (often with an attached photograph) rather than a resume. However, international “CVs” are structured and formatted more like a resume than they are an academic U.S. curriculum vitae.

The Difference Between U.S. and International CVs

The primary difference between a U.S. resume and an international CV is that employers in other countries, unfettered by U.S. employment discrimination laws, require more personal information than one would provide on a resume in the United States

You’ve probably heard of the Curriculum Vitae (CV) more than once. In some cases, it’s used as a synonym for the resume. In others, it seems like it’s something completely different.

So, which is it? What’s a CV , anyway? Is it any different than a resume? If so, how?

What is a CV? [+ Real-Life Example]

The term CV is an abbreviation of the Latin word Curriculum Vitae , which is literally translated to “the course of your life”. 

A CV is a very in-depth document that describes your career journey step-by-step, including all sorts of personal information. You can look at the CV as a comprehensive description of everything you have ever done, all the achievements you are proud of, and all the publications that bear your name.

You need to update your CV every time you accomplish something new academically or professionally. Meaning, whenever you get a new job, publish something new, obtain a new certificate, and so on.

There is no rule of thumb on how long a CV should be - depending on the amount of experience, it can range from 2 to 8 pages.

What is a Resume? [+ Real-Life Example]

A resume is a short, straight-to-the-point, document created for the purpose of applying to a specific job. 

Unlike the CV, you should try to keep a resume as short as possible . In 99% of the cases, you’d want to keep your resume to 1-page max . If you have 15+ years of experience, or really believe that the extra information you can mention can add value to your application, you can make it 2 pages tops.

In a resume, you only mention the aspects of your work experience and skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. A good resume highlights specific contributions you have made in your previous work and showcases how your different skills can be useful for the position you are applying to. 

The resume is usually accompanied by the submission of a cover letter which states your intent for applying to the job. The cover letter builds upon the skills and experience you have touched upon in your resume, explaining how they’re going to help you excel at the job you’re applying for. 

• Your job title , or the name of the position you’re applying for
• Resume summary or objective
• Relevant skills
• Languages and proficiency
• Relevant certifications and interests (if any)

Real-Life Resume Example

To get a better idea of what a resume looks like, check out the example below. 

In this case, Elizabeth Smith is applying for a job as a marketing specialist, not a professor.

Unlike Elizabeth’s CV, her resume is significantly shorter and more to-the-point. She only mentions relevant work experiences, skills, certifications, and education. After all, the hiring manager cares about her skills as a marketer, not her academic achievements.

The ordering of information is also a bit different. In Jane’s CV, she mentions her academic experiences first and then moves on to work. Here, it’s the other way around, with minimal emphasis on Jane’s academic successes.

CV vs. Resume - What’s the Difference

Now that you have a clear idea about what’s a CV and what’s a resume, here’s a complete list of the differences between the curriculum vitae (CV) and resume:

• Length - The first and most notable difference between a CV and a Resume is how long each one of them is. A resume is kept short and brief (usually 1 page), whereas the CV is more comprehensive (it can go up to 2-3 pages depending on your experience).
• Function - The CV is mainly used for academical purposes, such as applying for a research program, a Ph.D., or joining the staff of a university. The resume, on the other hand, is written for a regular job in a company.
• Type of information you include - The CV is an academic diary where you include all your academic qualifications, achievements, and certifications. It is universal in nature as it can be updated as you go. Whereas, a resume has to be created (or at least customized) for each job you’re applying for, and has a bigger focus on your professional achievements, rather than academic.

By now you should have a clear idea about the differences between the CV and the Resume. Here’s where it gets a tiny bit trickier: these differences generally only apply in the United States . 

In all of Europe, the word CV is essentially just a synonym for the resume. So, if you’re applying for a position in the EU, and the job asks for a CV, you should know that it actually means a resume.

Now, let’s sum up everything we learned in this post:

• A resume is a one page summary of your work experience and background relevant to the job you are applying to.
• A CV is a longer academic diary that includes all your experience, certificates, and publications.
• The differences are: (1) A resume is one page (max. two) whereas the CV can be longer, (2) A resume is used for job hunting in all industries, the CV is used for jobs and admissions in Academia, (3) The resume is tailored to the specific job you are applying to, whereas the CV is a comprehensive overview.
• In the EU, both terms mean the same thing.

Modernizing your resume for executive IT leadership

CIO resume makeover: Recent trends in structure, presentation, and emphasis can ensure your resume is streamlined to emphasize your professional brand.

For IT leaders seeking a new position, condensing an extensive and storied employment history into a short, readable resume can be daunting. But by embracing modernized approaches to resume presentation, and eliminating outdated and redundant content from your CV, a streamlined resume that stands out can be readily achieved.

To give an example of this in practice, we paired a CIO with an eye on continuing their executive leadership career at a new company with Stephen Van Vreede, president, executive resume writer, and coach for ITtechExec.com, to help improve their resume and modernize the overall look and feel.

It may seem like window dressing, but familiarizing yourself with current resume style and format trends is crucial for a career move at the leadership level. And if it’s been a few years since you’ve evaluated your resume, it’s likely those standards have changed. In this resume makeover, Van Vreede modernizes the resume of a seasoned IT leader, who wishes to remain anonymous, updating the aesthetic while delivering a clear, strategic message to draw in recruiters and hiring managers.

A modern look to catch a hiring manager’s eye

When updating your resume, content shouldn’t be your only focus. In the past decade, it has become easier than ever to create aesthetically pleasing documents without having a graphic design degree, and it’s important to use these accessible design tools to your advantage.

In this resume makeover, Van Vreede noted that the candidate’s resume “came across as antiquated because a very old format was being used.” The candidate’s original resume was visually basic with black text on a white background, bulleted lists, and no visual elements to draw the eye across the page. This outdated style creates a dense document that is hard to read, making it more difficult for recruiters to quickly scan for relevant skills.

Formatting your resume doesn’t have to be intimidating — utilizing options available in Word is all it takes. VanVreede decided on a blue theme for the candidate’s resume, highlighting each section with complementary light and dark blue tones, while utilizing larger fonts for the candidate’s name and the various section headers.

Using color and fonts help break up the document, making it easier for the reader to take in each section and better focus on the information presented. Creating visual stop points also helps hiring managers and recruiters more readily find the information they are looking for without having to labor through the entire document. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for the first person reading your resume to quickly identify why they should consider you for the role.

Van Vreede also suggests making strategic use of simple font enhancements, such as bolded text and italics. For example, in updating the candidate’s resume, Van Vreede ensures each section has the most relevant and crucial information bolded, enabling recruiters and hiring managers to pick out the most important skills and accomplishments quickly and then go back after to read for more detail once they’re pulled in and interested in you as a candidate.

A strategic summary shift

An executive summary at the top of your resume has become a popular way to identify relevant skills and experience from the jump. But remember, each detail in this summary must convey your professional brand, so make every word count.

This section should signal to the reader that you are a strong candidate for the role, and entice them to delve further into your experience and background. Design this section for the job you want, not the job you have — and illustrate why you would be the ideal fit.

In this case, the candidate’s original executive summary was short and redundant in the context of the rest of the document, and the experience section “came across as a laundry list of duties,” positioning the candidate as an “IT manager focused on tactics instead of a CIO focused on strategy and organizational value,” Van Vreede says.

The original resume also included two brief sentences about the candidate’s general experience, noting that they have a “proven record of achievement in reducing costs, streamlining operations, stakeholder satisfaction, creating business strategies and how to best leverage technology.” While these are valuable experiences for the sought-after role, it’s better to provide substantive examples of how each accomplishment was achieved.               

Van Vreede addressed this in the revised resume by first shifting the executive summary message to “position the candidate as a technology and operations executive who helps drive growth, scale, and profitability into the business,” he says. To enforce this shift from “tactical to strategic ” leader, Van Vreede also expanded the summary to include information that would highlight the candidate’s “achievements and business impact statements,” he says.

In the revised document, Van Vreede included specific accomplishments such as “rebuilt IT and modernized technology stack, led strategic projects and change management programs, managed 501c3 IT business operations, and modernized higher education IT operations and technology ecosystem.” These are more clear directives that demonstrate the candidate’s competency as a CIO, emphasized in bold, with additional context for each point included after for anyone who wants to know more.

This not only helps create a more cohesive narrative for the resume, but also ensures it will stand out and be “more likely to be read on a quick first review,” says Van Vreede. You want to establish your professional brand right from the start, and lead with the most compelling information to hook the reader.

Brevity makes a difference

The candidate, who felt their original resume was “too long and detailed,” wanted an updated resume that better reflected their “current role as an executive leader” in a more succinct manner. Here, Van Vreede says that applying a “strategic content and messaging focus” throughout a resume is the key to streamlining decades of experience into a professional brand.

For instance, on the candidate’s original resume, each job included an extensive list of often repetitive or outdated information. Moreover, the candidate’s career history on the original resume went back to 1997, with multiple bullet points for each position. In the revised version, Van Vreede condensed the oldest work experiences to a list of job titles under the heading “Select Additional Experience.” In this section, he also highlighted a few key accomplishments, removing everything that was outdated. Under the “Professional Experience” section, Van Vreede included the candidate’s four most recent positions, with the most space devoted to highlighting their two most recent positions.

In making these choices, Van Vreede emphasized the candidate’s CIO career path. For example, including the candidate’s two positions as business operations manager in their Professional Experience section outlines how these two positions led to the candidate’s later positions as director of IT operations and technology and CIO, the descriptions of which include far more detail and bullet points because they’re the most relevant to the candidate’s sought-after role.

For the candidate’s experience as a business operations manager, Van Vreede focused on accomplishments such as “championed cloud enablement, elevated organizational culture, and drove revenue and profit attainment surpassing business objectives.” These help demonstrate how the candidate’s path to leadership began, in managerial roles where they began flexing their leadership and strategic skills. It makes it easy to see how the candidate eventually found their way to the C-suite, highlighting their earliest accomplishments in these relevant areas.

The final result

It’s common to struggle with understanding which accomplishments to highlight on your resume, but thanks to the resume makeover process, the candidate says that Van Vreede helped them see how they were underselling themselves.

“I was impressed by the expert’s professionalism, expertise, and feedback. They were very supportive, attentive, and responsive throughout the process. I enjoyed the collaboration and communication with the expert. They listened to my needs, goals, and preferences and incorporated them into my resume,” says the candidate, who also noted that Van Vreede offered valuable tips on how to tailor the resume for different positions and industries.

“I learned a lot from the process, such as how to highlight my achievements, skills, and keywords, format and structure my resume, and tailor it for different opportunities,” the candidate says. “Thanks to the resume rewrite process, I feel more confident and prepared for my job search. I think it gave me a competitive edge and a positive impression.”

The No. 1 AI mistake job seekers make, from a career expert: So many people use ChatGPT 'in exactly the wrong way'

As a leader at the education nonprofit Khan Academy, I was thrilled when ChatGPT came out in November 2022. It meant we could use generative AI to provide personalized tutoring to more kids than ever.

But as a hiring manager and cofounder of a career development business who's trained first-gen students at CUNY and MBAs at Harvard Business School alike, I was heartbroken to see that so many job seekers were using these tools in exactly the wrong way. 

They forgot that no matter how exciting this new technology is, humans are still in charge of the hiring process. Which is why having a robot write your resume is a recipe for disaster.

But given that I wrote the literal book on using ChatGPT in your job search , I know you can still turn to AI to make your resume shine. Used properly, it can help you land the interview — and ultimately the job. 

The wrong way to use AI for your resume

In my experience, most job seekers using ChatGPT or other AI platforms begin with a prompt like "Generate a marketing resume." This might seem like a great place to start, but it's the biggest mistake you could make. Here's why: 

The results are massively generic 

Take this summary, for instance:

As a hiring manager, the first thing I'm always looking for is evidence of specific accomplishments. When I scan this, though, my first thought is "Wow — this candidate is great at buzzwords, but not so great at actual marketing." 

That's hardly the first impression you want to make when employers spend seven seconds , on average, reviewing your resume!

ChatGPT and other AI tools are going to make stuff up 

As if that wasn't bad enough, check out what comes next under a single job listing under the experience section:

Not only do these bullet points lack specificity (with no clear projects or outcomes), but the sheer range of skills covered is literally unbelievable. As in, I've never met a marketer in my two-decade career who did all of these things in one job.

So my human BS detector immediately assumes the worst: This isn't a resume, this is a hallucination!

The right way to use AI for your resume

OK, you get the picture: Having AI generate your resume from scratch can be a fast track to rejection. But if we know that human reviewers want specificity and credibility, we can actually leverage AI to help us with those exact things.

1. Start with a draft resume written by a human (i.e., you)

Instead of asking AI to generate your resume, start with your own first draft, even if it's in rough shape. That way, you can at least be specific and accurate about what you actually did, even if those accomplishments need a little polishing.

2. Identify and incorporate missing keywords

3. Quantify achievements and demonstrate results

The best predictor of future performance is usually past performance, which means recruiters and hiring managers want to see real results, not just hallucinations.

So get a little nudge in the right direction with a prompt like: 

Suggest three ways to add more quantitative impact to the following bullet point: [Paste your bullet point here]

Now, it's tempting to copy and paste the bullets your AI platform suggests straight into your resume. But make sure you're editing the text to match your actual accomplishments. For instance, maybe you generated $300,000 in donations, not $500,000 like the AI spit out, or your organization actually measures growth quarterly rather than monthly.

4. Review, review, review!

Always proofread your resume before submitting it. If you've used AI, it's all the more important to review every last word and number to make sure everything's 100% accurate. 

The last thing you want is to be sitting in a final-round interview and have your prospective boss's boss's boss ask you about a resume bullet the AI fabricated and you forgot to update!

Three-year, $160 million project to repave 10 miles of I-94 resumes Monday

BATTLE CREEK — A three-year, $160 million project to repave 10 miles of I-94 and replace or repair 17 bridges in Calhoun County resumes Monday.

Drivers can expect to contend with a single-lane closure on westbound I-94 between Exit 100 (Beadle Lake Road) and Exit 104 (M-96/Michigan Avenue and M-311/11 Mile Road) on Monday and a single-lane closure in the corresponding eastbound lanes on Tuesday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

These lane closures will allow crews to shift all four lanes of I-94 traffic to rebuild the bridges over 9 Mile Road and the Kalamazoo River.

This year, crews will be repaving I-94 between Helmer Road and 6 1/2 Mile Road, and from I-69 to 17 1/2 Mile Road, according to MDOT. Workers will be rebuilding the eastbound I-94 bridges over 6 1/2 Mile Road, M-294 (Beadle Lake Road), 9 Mile Road and the Kalamazoo River, as well as completing bridge paint work at F Drive North, I-194, and Old US-27.

There will be lane closures and traffic shifts on I-94 during the work, which is expected to be completed in mid-November. For most of the year, there will be two lanes of I-94 open in each direction with the exception of short-duration single-lane closures for traffic shifts, MDOT officials said.

In 2023, crews rebuilt the Capital Avenue bridge over I-94 and the westbound bridges over 6 1/2 Mile Road, M-294, 9 Mile Road and the Kalamazoo River.

Work in 2025 will be limited to repaving at the Battle Creek Rest Area on eastbound I-94.

Funding for this project is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's  Rebuilding Michigan program  to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state's infrastructure.

FBI resumes outreach to social media companies over foreign propaganda

The FBI has resumed some of its efforts to share information with some American tech companies about foreign propagandists using their platforms after it ceased contact for more than half a year, multiple people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The program, established during the Trump administration, briefed tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Meta when the U.S. intelligence community found evidence of covert influence operations using their products to mislead Americans. It was put on hold this summer in the wake of a lawsuit that accused the U.S. government of improperly pressuring tech companies about how to moderate their sites and an aggressive inquisition from the House Judiciary Committee and its chair, Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.

The lawsuit , filed by the Republican attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri, awaits a ruling from the Supreme Court. A majority of justices appeared skeptical of the suit when they heard its claims, and the court is scheduled to rule on the suit at the end of June.

The FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, responsible for conducting the briefings, resumed outreach a little more than two weeks ago.

“In coordination with the Department of Justice, the FBI recently implemented procedures to facilitate sharing information about foreign malign influence with social media companies in a way that reinforces that private companies are free to decide on their own whether and how to take action on that information,” an FBI spokesperson said Wednesday.

The FBI’s previous outreach to the tech companies similarly did not include any requirement that they act on the information, said people at three of the tech companies that previously received them.

It was not clear how fully the FBI had resumed the program. Employees at two companies that had previously received the briefings said the agency had resumed limited outreach but that it had not resumed the substantial briefings.

The briefings became a fixation for Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee and Jordan, its chair, who proposed without proof that the briefings were part of an FBI conspiracy to help President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign by hiding emails from Biden’s son Hunter. Tech companies disputed that characterization.

The briefings generally involved FBI representatives’ giving the companies information that the U.S. intelligence community had gathered about alleged dedicated foreign propagandists. While companies that received the briefings have rarely shared details about them, Meta has occasionally mentioned in quarterly reports that it has banned campaigns of alleged “coordinated inauthentic behavior” from both Iran and people formerly associated with the Russian Internet Research Agency after having learned about them through the FBI.

At a hearing last week, Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner, D-Va., alluded to the dates the FBI paused and resumed the program.

“All throughout the Trump administration, and in this case the Trump administration did right, there was voluntary sharing that went back and forth on a regular basis. So if NSA or CISA found evidence of foreign malign influence, that could be shared in a voluntary basis with the companies, and vice versa,” Warner said, referring to the National Security Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

“As of last July and literally until about two weeks ago, there’d been no communication between those social media platforms, where a lot of this foreign misinformation/disinformation takes place, and the government,” Warner said.

Two people who work at different major U.S. tech companies that previously received the briefings, who requested they not be named over fears of harassment, said their companies had still been sharing information about propaganda campaigns with each other despite the lack of information from the U.S. government.

MBTA resumes Red Line service at Park Street after Broadway Station derailment

The red line train was not carrying passengers; no injuries were reported..

Red Line service at Park Street has resumed after a train that derailed Saturday morning at Broadway Station was removed, according to the MBTA.

The train was carrying no passengers and derailed during scheduled maintenance that already had riders using shuttle buses. The MBTA announced the derailment at 5:47 a.m. on X . No injuries were reported, the MBTA said, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.

At 11:56 a.m., the MBTA announced the removal of the derailed train and the resumption of service between Park Street and Broadway.

There were 15-minute delays between Broadway and Alewife after service resumed, but the delays have cleared, the MBTA said.

The incident involved the first car of a Red Line train, which derailed as the train switched between tracks, according to the MBTA.

MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng was present when the car was re-railed and the tracks fixed.

“The MBTA is working to determine the root cause of the incident, but investigators are focused on the performance and operation of the track switch. An update will be provided next week,” the MBTA said in an email Saturday afternoon. “The MBTA apologizes to all of the customers who were inconvenienced by this morning’s incident.”

Shuttle buses were already set to run between Broadway and Ashmont and Broadway and North Quincy for “bridge work & station maintenance” this weekend, according to an earlier statement.

The shuttle service was extended to Park Street temporarily to accommodate the derailment.

Maintenance on the Red Line and the demolition of a Dorchester Avenue bridge is scheduled to continue during the next two weekends.

The commuter rail service between Braintree and South Station was also replaced Saturday by express shuttles to accommodate maintenance, which will continue for the next two weekends.

North Korea resumes missile tests, raising tensions with its rivals after their military drills’ end

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters Monday morning, its neighbors said, days after the end of the South Korean-U.S. military drills that the North views as an invasion rehearsal.

The launches — North Korea’s first known missile testing activities in about a month — came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Seoul for a democracy summit . Outside experts earlier predicted North Korea would extend its run of missile tests and intensify its warlike rhetoric ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November to boost its leverage in future diplomacy.

Japan’s Defense Ministry said North Korea fired three missiles, two together at 7:44 a.m. and the other about 37 minutes later. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told a parliamentary session that the North Korean missiles landed in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, all outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone, and that no damage or injuries have been reported.

Kishida denounced North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile tests as acts “that threaten the peace and safety of Japan, the region and the international society.” He said Japan strongly protested against North Korea over its testing activities, saying they violated U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban the North from engaging in any ballistic activities.

South Korea’s military said it also detected “several” suspected short-range ballistic launches by North Korea on Monday morning. The Joint Chiefs of Staff called the launches “clear provocation” that threaten peace on the Korean Peninsula. It said South Korea will maintain readiness to repel any provocation by North Korea, based on its solid military alliance with the United States.

According to Japanese and South Korean assessments, the North Korean missiles fired from its capital region traveled a distance of 300-350 kilometers (about 185-220 miles) and reached a maximum altitude of 50 kilometers (about 30 miles).Observers say the missiles’ fight distances indicate they are weapons targeting major facilities in South Korea, such as its military headquarters in the central region.

The U.S. State Department condemned the launches, saying they pose a threat to the North’s neighbors and undermine regional security. A State Department statement said the U.S. commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan remain “ironclad.”

The U.S. stations a total of 80,000 troops in South Korea and Japan, the backbone of its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

During the South Korea-U.S. military drills that ended Thursday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un guided a series of military training exercises involving tanks , artillery guns and paratroopers and called for greater war fighting capabilities. The 11-day South Korean-U.S. drills involved a computer-simulated command post training and 48 kinds of field exercises, twice the number conducted last year.

The North didn’t perform any missile tests during its rivals’ training, however. Its missile tests are considered much bigger provocations as North Korea has been pushing hard to mount nuclear warheads on its missiles targeting the U.S. mainland and its allies. Many experts say North Korea already has nuclear-armed missiles capable of reaching all of South Korea and Japan, but it has yet to have functioning long-range missiles that can strike the U.S. mainland.

Before Monday’s launches, North Korea last carried out missile tests in mid-February by firing cruise missiles into the sea.

Animosities on the Korean Peninsula remain high in the wake of North Korea’s barrage of missile tests since 2022. Many of the tests involved nuclear-capable missiles designed to attack South Korea and the mainland U.S. The U.S. and South Korean forces have responded by expanding their training exercises and trilateral drills involving Japan.

Experts say North Korea likely believes a bigger weapons arsenal would increase its leverage in future diplomacy with the United States. They say North Korea would want to win extensive sanctions relief while maintaining its nuclear weapons.

Worries about North Korean military moves have deepened since Kim vowed in a speech in January to rewrite the constitution to eliminate the country’s long-standing goal of seeking peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula and to cement South Korea as its “invariable principal enemy.” He said the new charter must specify North Korea would annex and subjugate the South if another war broke out.

Observers say North Korea may launch limited provocations along its tense border with South Korea. But they say the prospects for a full-scale attack by North Korea are dim as it would know its military is outmatched by the U.S. and South Korean forces.
