Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

  • a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
  • support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

  • conference attendance
  • language training
  • overseas research visits
  • internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

  • non-medical personal assistance
  • specialist equipment
  • extra travel costs
  • general expenses

Find out more about DSA in our framework .

If you are a research organisation you can download claim forms and guidance for DSA .

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

For doctoral students who are already studying with a studentship, there are opportunities to get additional funding to support placements that are separate from your doctorate.  Find training and development opportunities .

Funding available

There are three different levels of funding available for new students: fully funded, partially funded, and fees only, all at the home fee rate.

  • Full-time and Part-time applications are welcome : Funding for part-time study will be pro rata at 50% of the full-time rate.
  • Overseas fee-paying candidates: These awards will cover Home fees only. If you are selected for interview you will need to demonstrate that you can fund the difference in fees for each year of your registration. This is currently £11,288 for the academic year 2023/24 and it should be noted that tuition fees increase slightly each year. You would therefore need to find at least £33,864 over the 3 years, plus the yearly increase.

Note that if you were shortlisted for the Techne 2024 funding competition but were unsuccessful you will automatically be considered for these awards.

Fully-funded studentships

Up to 15 awards are available.

Fees: Home tuition fees only for 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. For 2023/24 this is £4,712 full-time or £2,356 part-time.

Stipend: 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time.

The full-time doctoral stipend for 2023/24 is £20,622 per year; levels are likely to rise slightly for the following years but have not yet been confirmed.

Applications for part-time study are welcomed and will receive pro-rata funding for both tuition fees and stipend.

Race Equality studentships

Fully-funded studentships for black, asian and minority ethnic applicants (home students only).

We encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and have set aside a number of the studentships listed above for applicants who identify as having these ethnic backgrounds. In addition to the funding, there will be a programme of support and mentoring available to you.

Successful applicants will be offered a place on our RISE Research Leadership Academy , which is designed to develop candidates' leadership skills within academia.

Note that these awards are open to Home fee-paying students only.  Read more about who is eligible for home fee status .

To apply, please follow the process listed below and state ‘Race Equality Studentship' at the top of your Studentship Application Statement.

Once we have confirmed the availability of a potential supervisory team, we will offer application and interview support through a faculty mentor who will be a member of academic staff. To access support in advance of submitting your application please email the relevant Research Student Coordinator (listed below) and ask to be put in touch with a mentor in your subject area.

We are also hoping to have current research students with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds available to discuss their experiences with you. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please email [email protected] to arrange an informal online meeting or phone call.

Note that a representative from the Kingston University People of Colour Staff Network will be part of the awarding panel.

Unsuccessful applicants who reach the interview stage will be offered a feedback meeting to assist with future applications.

Watch a video from one of our current award holders, Salema Foot, whose research focuses on the academic lived experiences of Black postgraduate students in the UK.

What is a studentship?

‘Studentship’ is the term used for a funding package, or grant, awarded to a student by one or a combination of the below  funding sources for university study. Studentships can cover part or all of a student’s tuition fees and include a ‘stipend’ for living costs.

Who can apply for a studentship?

Each studentship opportunity has its own specific eligibility criteria: some are open to both current and prospective students, others only to prospective students and many of the studentships available at UCL are open to both Home and International-fee status applicants – please check individual opportunities for their eligibility requirements.

Studentships at UCL

Sources of funding.

Postgraduate research funding comes from a variety of sources - some schemes are funded internally by UCL, while others are externally funded by a wide range of organisations. Schemes are administered in one of the following ways:

  • Funded and managed by UCL
  • Funded by an external organisation with UCL responsible for the management of funds
  • Funded by an external organisation with the external organisation responsible for the management of funds and liaising directly with the student regarding their funding

Where UCL manages the funding of an externally funded scheme or studentship, for example, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Wellcome Trust grants, UCL rights and regulations apply in addition to those of the funder. Please note that if a studentship is externally funded and the external organisation manages and liaises directly with the student regarding the funding, UCL is not responsible for the administration of funding in any way.

Examples of internally and externally managed funding sources are:

Internally managed funding sources

  • Central UCL schemes (for example, the Research Excellence Scholarship (RES) and the Research Opportunities Scholarship (ROS))
  • Discipline specific faculty or departmental studentships and schemes
  • UKRI Research Councils
  • Some charities and societies (for example, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and the Royal Society)

Externally managed funding sources

  • Nation-specific schemes  (for example, the China Scholarship Council (CSC))

There are numerous studentship opportunities at UCL, including:

Doctoral Training Entity (DTE) Studentships

Doctoral Training Entities, or DTEs, is the term used by UCL for all its funded postgraduate research training programmes. In addition to providing funding, DTE studentships offer prospective doctoral researchers the opportunity to develop their research skills through a defined training programme as part of a cohort. Funders of DTEs include UKRI, Wellcome Trust, and the British Heart Foundation.

For more information on UCL’s DTEs, visit Doctoral Training Entities (DTEs) .

UCL Research Excellence Scholarship (UCL-RES)

The UCL Research Excellence Scholarship (UCL-RES) is the premier scholarship programme for exceptional scholars pursuing doctoral research at UCL. It combines what was previously known as the GRS and ORS scholarships.

UCL-RES applications for the 2024/2025 academic year start are closed. The scholarship runs each year with the application window opening in October.

For detailed information on UCL-RES, including eligibility and the application process, visit the Research Excellence Scholarship  page.

UCL Research Opportunities Scholarship (UCL-ROS)

UCL's Research Opportunity Scholarship (UCL-ROS) supports current and prospective Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) postgraduate research degree students to excel in academia.

The UCL Scheme offers full financial support and a skills development programme, and responds to persistent under-representation and structural inequalities that disadvantage talented ethnically minoritised researchers. Visit the UCL-ROS scholars testimonials to see how this scholarship has benefitted UCL's community of UCL-ROS scholars.

UCL-ROS applications for the 2024/2025 academic year start are closed. The scholarship runs each year with the application window opening in October.

For detailed information on UCL-ROS, including eligibility and the application process, visit the Research Opportunities Scholarship .

For part and full financial awards or scholarships aimed at assisting both prospective and current students with their studies that are not project or DTE-related, use the Scholarships Finder Tool .

Other External Funding Opportunities

Beyond UCL, numerous organisations offer scholarships, funding and development opportunities for home and international doctoral researchers. These include governmental and charitable organisations, some of which award nation-specific scholarships to academically excellent students to foster research relationships between countries, whilst others award based on research field. Please note that eligibility criteria and application requirements vary across organisations and schemes.

PhD in Accounting

PhD in Economics

PhD in Finance

PhD in Marketing

PhD in Management Science and Operations

PhD in Organisational Behaviour

PhD in Strategy and Entrepreneurship

You need an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, with a final grade in the top 10% of your graduating class. Most incoming students also hold a Masters degree.

Please also submit a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) score taken within the past five years. Successful applicants typically have a GMAT score above 690 or GRE quantitative and analytical scores above the 80th percentile.

You need to give details of two referees. They should be faculty members who know your work well and can judge your research potential - for example, previous supervisors or academic tutors.

  • A completed application form with Statement of Purpose (online)
  • Two academic reference letters (online)
  • Original GMAT or GRE score report (online)
  • Official transcript or certified copy of university grades from all past degrees (online)
  • Valid, original Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Cambridge score report (if required)

The deadline for applications is 1 December 2023 for entry into the programme in September of the following year.

The form will remain open until 2 December to allow applicants in all time zones to submit their form and any supporting documents.

UK applicants from low income households who are able to evidence that they were in receipt of full state support for maintenance as an undergraduate at a UK university within the last 4 years are eligible for an application fee waiver.

Applicants who are able to evidence they have a valid Asylum Registration Card or Biometric Residence Permit and Overseas Applicants from any of the countries included on the UN list of least developed countries are also eligible for an application fee waiver.

Individuals who feel that they need a fee waiver but do not meet these criteria may contact the Programme Office explaining their circumstances to request a waiver.

For all other applicants, there is an application fee of £75.

Short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview between December and January to meet faculty and to see the School’s facilities. It may be possible for candidates who are unable to travel to London to be interviewed online.

Regrettably, due to the large number of applications received each year, it is not possible to arrange meetings with members of faculty prior to an interview.

Unless you are an English speaker or have a degree from a university in an English-speaking country, (where the language of instruction was English) according to UK Visa and Immigration policy guidance you must submit evidence of proficiency in English. Please click here to verify if you meet the requirements. You should have scored at least 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (Internet-based) on the TOEFL to be considered for the PhD programme.

Other recognised English language tests (IELTS, Cambridge) are also accepted. A valid test report (less than two years old) must be submitted to the Programme Office.

London Business School institution code for TOEFL is 0898

Some subject areas state which test they would prefer applicants to take:

  • GRE – Economics, Management Science and Operations
  • GMAT – Accounting, Marketing

GMAT and GRE are administered by independent agencies. The tests measure verbal, quantitative and analytical skills and provide an indication of the ability for clear and systematic thought. One of these tests is required from each applicant and the requirement cannot be waived.

For more information on GMAT, visit: https://www.gmac.com/gmat-other-assessments and GRE at www.gre.org .

London Business School GMAT code is Z11-J7-75

London Business School GRE code is 3491

Some students are expected to attend a four week maths refresher or pre-programme course in September (depending on the subject area).  All students will be required to attend orientation in the first month of the programme, giving you the chance to meet faculty, your first year supervisor and other PhD students. You'll also receive training and induction in London Business School's facilities and services.

All students offered a place on the PhD programme receive full funding, which includes a tuition fee waiver and a stipend guaranteed for five years, subject to satisfactory academic progression.

No, you do not need to contact faculty members before you make an application. Decisions on supervisors are only made after the first year in the programme, so you will have plenty of time to get to know faculty. We do encourage you to read the faculty profiles on our website to see if faculty at LBS have research interests relevant to what you wish to do.

Most students complete the Programme within five/six years.

The academic year starts in October. The year is divided into three terms (AUT, SPR and SUM), lasting 10 weeks each. Some new students may also need to attend a pre-sessional course in September.

All students must work as teaching or research assistants for 20 days (160 hours) a year in years 2, 3 and 4 of the programme. At least 10 days (80 hours) should be of teaching assistance (and the other 10 days could be research assistance, depending on each subject area’s preference). This is seen as a valuable part of your training.

The Programme is run on a full-time basis only and students are expected to live in London.

A tuition fee waiver is included in the scholarship, and no additional fees are charged.

We do not offer transfers. You may be admitted to the programme from year one and apply for exemption from courses already taken. In such cases students will be required to pass a waiver examination. No more than three course waivers are permitted.

Yes, you must. We expect all applicants to submit a GRE or GMAT score before their application can be considered. Your score is valid for up to five years.

Funding a PhD

A PhD is a significant investment, but it is one that brings an invaluable personal experience and a wealth of professional opportunities upon your graduation.

View of the London skyline

PhD programmes typically take 3-4 years if you are studying full-time and 6-7 years if you are studying part-time. Some of our students self-fund their tuition and living costs and  this page outlines the tuition fees for each research programme. For Home students , the tuition fee is the same across all courses and all universities in the UK. For 2022 entry this is set at £4,596 per year for full-time students.

If you are not able to self-fund your studies, there are a range of different sources of funding available for PhD students at Queen Mary – in fact, we offer over 100 fully or partially funded studentships each year. These include:

  • Postgraduate Research Studentships  (including our BAME studentships )
  • Doctoral Training Studentships
  • Other sources (such as charities and industry) .

Planning your funding is an important element of the application process and we recommend that you begin to explore your funding options as early as possible.

Tuition fees and loans

  • PhD tuition fees
  • Payment of tuition fees

Queen Mary's tuition fees vary depending on whether you are from the UK or EU, or are coming to study in the UK from further afield. Please click the above link for full PhD tuition fee details.

The UK government introduced loans of up to £25,000 for English-resident UK nationals from 2018 onwards. Read more about the loans here .

What are the PhD funding deadlines?

It is important to be aware that different funding bodies and organisations all have different deadlines: the majority of these will be between November and February prior to the commencement of your PhD project in September. The majority of Queen Mary funded studentships close for applications in January each year.

Other funding opportunities do come up throughout the year, so please be sure to keep checking departmental PhD funding pages and www.findaphd.com  where all opportunities are advertised.

Where can I find out more detailed information?

Our Advice and Counselling Service have produced a detailed online funding guide for postgraduate students. This guide includes everything you need to know about money when applying for and planning your postgraduate studies.

University fee regulations

Like all other UK universities, Queen Mary is bound by legislation and Government regulations on fees.

Queen Mary's University fee regulations are outlined in this document: University Fee Regulations 2023/24 [PDF 20,281KB]

These regulations are updated every year, you can access a list of   archived and present University Fee Regulations here .

How the departmental scholarship scheme works

How to apply, applications.

In order to be considered for the Chemical Engineering PhD Scholarships, you will need to submit your PhD application for admission through the online admissions system . The programme title is 'Chemical Engineering (PhD)'. Your application form must include:

  • Full transcripts of your university studies to date.
  • A personal statement to support your application, which should outline your research interest and experience.
  • A copy of your English Language certificate if applicable. You must meet the College’s English language requiremen t at the higher level.
  • The contact details of two referees , at least one of whom must be an academic referee, for example your project supervisor or personal tutor.

The scholarships are very competitive and our aim is to select the most outstanding PhD students and offer them financial support. Your application should demonstrate an outstanding academic record and research skills.

We have one selection process for all the scholarships that are administered by the College, including President's Scholarships, CSC Imperial Scholarships and the Departmental Scholarship.

You will need to submit your PhD application by the following deadlines in order to be considered for these:

  • Round 1:  31 October for entry in October of the following year
  • Round 2: 31 December for entry in October of the following year
  • Round 3: 28 February for entry in October of the same year

Please note that the majority of scholarships are likely to be allocated in Round 1. We therefore recommend that you submit your PhD application in time for the Round 1 deadline.

Please note that where there is a later deadline advertised for College scholarships, the departmental deadline  before  the College deadline will apply, as you will need to go through the departmental selection process, including interviews, before we can put you forward for a College Scholarship.

The selection process for departmental and College scholarships

An academic selection panel will screen the applications that demonstrate the necessary achievement and potential and will shortlist the most outstanding candidates for interview. If you are shortlisted and successful in your interview, you will be asked to select 2 projects offered by different supervisors in the order of your preference.

Once we have received the project selections from all the successful candidates, we will contact your first-choice and ask them if they are happy to take you on under the departmental scholarship scheme. If there is more than one successful applicant who wants to work with the same supervisor, the supervisor will be asked to choose the student who is most suited to the project. If you are not selected by your first-choice supervisor, we will contact your second-choice supervisor. If you are not selected by either of the supervisors, we will try our best to match you up with another eligible supervisor.

We will consider all successful applicants for any scholarships offered at College level and put forward the most outstanding candidates who fit the eligibility criteria for a particular scholarship.

What happens if my scholarship application is unsuccessful?

All the scholarships offered through the Department are highly competitive and it can happen that candidates who are academically very good will not be selected because the competition was too high. If your application meets the expected standard, we will be happy to make it available to potential supervisors, as they may be looking for students for funded projects. You may be contacted by a supervisor with details of a particular project and invited for an interview.

If you meet the academic requirements for PhD studies and you have your own funding, either as a self-funded student or through an external sponsor such as a sponsoring company, your employer, or the government of your home country, you will need to identify a potential supervisor (the list of academic research groups may be useful) who is prepared to supervise you subject to successful interview with an independent academic panel. The supervisor will need to put you forward for a self-funded interview.

What can I expect in the interview?

The scholarship interviews last for 20 minutes and will be held by a panel of academic staff, normally chaired by the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor. If you are based in or near London, the interview will be held in person; otherwise it will be by MS Teams video call. You should be prepared to answer technical questions related to your research interest, questions about your motivation, and generally demonstrate that you are an outstanding student.

When will I find out about my application?

We have two selection rounds for the Chemical Engineering PhD Scholarships and any of the College scholarships:

  • Application deadline: 31 October for October entry in the following year
  • The shortlisting panel will meet in mid-November and interviews will be held in late November or early December
  • Successful candidates will be notified within a week of the last interview and we will endeavour to allocate projects by the end of December
  • Application deadline: 31 December for October entry in the following year
  • The shortlisting panel will meet in mid-January and interviews will be held in late January or early February
  • Successful candidates will be notified within a week of the last interview and we will endeavour to allocate projects by the end of February
  • Application deadline: 28 February for October entry in the same year
  • The shortlisting panel will meet in mid-March and interviews will be held in late March or early April
  • Successful candidates will be notified within a week of the last interview and we will endeavour to allocate projects by the end of April

Application screening is done in line with the scholarship selection timeline. If you have external funding and need to be considererd for a self-funded interview outside these timelines, please contact us .

Who do I contact if I have any questions?

If you have any questions about the application process or any specific queries that are related to a PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering our your PhD application, please email the Departmental PhD team .

Applying for a PhD

How to apply for a phd.

Follow the steps below to make your application – from finding a supervisor to drafting a research proposal. When you are ready to apply, find the relevant PhD course page to submit your application.

If you have any questions please email [email protected] .

Step 1 - find a research match

Before submitting an application, we encourage you to contact a potential supervisor via email.

To find a supervisor in an area you are interested in and their contact email please see the relevant  School/College PhD opportunities page  which lists current opportunities and research areas and current and past PhD research projects.

When you email a supervisor, please consider the following to help them assess whether you are a suitable PhD candidate:

  • Is the proposed project suitable for PhD study?
  • Do you have the academic strength to complete your project?
  • Can the project be completed within the required time?
  • Do they have the relevant knowledge to supervise your project?
  • Can the School/College support your project and do they have the facilities and resources?

If you cannot find the research area you are looking for on the School/College PhD opportunities pages , or have any queries about the application process, please email  Postgraduate Admissions .

Step 2 - review our entry requirements and funding

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1) and a masters degree with merit or distinction. If your qualifications are not from a UK university, we also consider recognised equivalent qualifications from accredited overseas institutions and equivalent professional qualifications.

If English is not your first language, you will require an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with no element under 6.0. If you obtained your masters degree in the UK, you are exempt from this requirement. You do not need to meet this at the point of application. You may provide evidence of your English level at a later date.

You should ensure that you have a realistic plan to secure sufficient funding to complete the research and writing-up process within the normal time period. This is usually three to four years for full-time programmes, and five to six years for part-time programmes.

Some of our full-time PhD students are funded by the University. Studentships cover your tuition fees and normally include an allowance towards living costs - find out more about our Vice Chancellor's PhD scholarships . Studentships are advertised on the University website and Findaphd.com.

Step 3 - prepare a research proposal

Add the name of your supervisor to the front page of your proposal.  Before submitting your application, you may need to revise your proposal several times. Whilst your potential supervisor may help you do this, it is important that you present them with as clear a proposal as you can when you first make contact with them.

Tips for writing a good research proposal include:

  • Put together a precise, interesting research question; this may be a hypothesis to be tested, or a more open-ended inquiry.
  • Establish the relevance and value of the proposed research question in the context of current academic thinking. Is there a knowledge gap?
  • Outline a clear and practical methodology which enables you to answer the research question, and to describe and evaluate any data or source material you will draw upon.
  • Suggest what you hope to discover at the end of your research and what new areas it might open up.
  • Demonstrate that your research will not take longer than four years of full-time study or six years of part-time study.

Step 4 - gather your documents and apply online

To get to the online application form, select the relevant PhD course page for your research area.

Your application should be submitted with the following:

  • A completed application form
  • Transcripts
  • Proof of English language ability for overseas applicants from non-English speaking countries
  • Your research proposal

Step 5 - what happens next

Once processed, the School/College may get in touch with you directly to discuss your application and arrange an interview. If you are not successful in being short-listed for interview you will be informed by email.
