The Master of Science and PhD programs in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) are multidisciplinary graduate programs that aim to train the next generation of leaders in biomedical sciences. The Master’s and PhD degree paths offer students an education that provides them with an advanced level of knowledge – particularly in applied areas of biological and biomedical sciences – and helps them develop critical and independent reasoning skills.

Program focus:

• The exploration of a rigorous curriculum designed to provide a strong foundation, as well as cutting- edge knowledge in both the theoretical and applied aspects of biomedically relevant areas of biology.
• The development of vital professional skills, such as clear verbal and written communication and critical evaluation of others’ work.
• Students will be exposed to state-of-the-art basic, clinical, computational, and translational life sciences research.

PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences: A program with a minimum of 60 credits taught in English, typically over 3.5 years, which includes:

One mandatory foundation course, a minimum of five elective courses, participation in departmental seminars, participation in the bbs journal club, dissertation research and laboratory training (minimum of six semesters).

PhD students are required to pass a qualifying examination after their second semester, and a candidacy examination after their fourth semester.

• Applicants can submit one application only. duplicate applications will be disregarded.
• Applicants can save their application progress and apply in several sessions.
• Applicants are required to upload all application materials via the online portal.
• Applicants can request references online via the online application system.
• Referees receive the reference request automatically and can fill out the reference forms online.
• Applicants can check the status of their references online and can remind a referee or create a new reference request even after submission of the application.

Doha Institute for Graduate Studies Scholsrship Egibility

Master’s Applicants

• he applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in the field of specialization or a related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 rom an accredited university that is recognized in the lists of the Qatari Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Also, the specialty should be related to the research field for which the candidate applied.
• The applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree (Full-time study) or its equivalent and obtain one of the minimum grades mentioned above.
• The applicant must have earned a  bachelor’ degree in the last five years.
• Students in their final BA year are eligible to apply for admission if they obtain their final degrees by August 1st of the same year.

PhD Applicants

• have earned a Bachelor’s degree in the field of specialization or a related field, with a GPA of no less than 3.25, and a master’s degree or its equivalent with a GPA of no less than 3.50 out of 4.00 (or its equivalent) from an accredited university recognized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar, and in a specialization related to the research field to which the candidate is applying.
• prove that his study was regularly conducted (Full-time study) to obtain his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
• be able to study and research academically in Arabic with a measure of English language proficiency.

Furthermore, to apply for the doctoral scholarship, the applicant must

• Be accepted in the institution.
• Be unable to afford the costs of pursuing a doctoral degree and have no other scholarships.
• The scholarship covers two semesters during which the student must complete the courses of the first phase. In case of failing to complete them in that period, the student shall pay the additional fees as determined by the institution.
• Identification document: Passport for international applicants. Qatari ID for citizens and residents of Qatar.
• Undergraduate transcripts. Senior year students should submit all their obtained transcripts to date.
• Graduation certificate or diploma for graduates.
• Resume (CV).
• TOEFL or IELTS results or official statement stating that the degree was taught in English as a main language of instruction.
• Personal Statement.
• Academic Essay (for applicants to the School of Social Sciences and Humanities).

Admission Selection Process :

The Admissions Department ensures that all applicants meet the admission requirements and conditions. All admission applications are evaluated according to the following steps:

1) Transcript Evaluation

The admissions department evaluates the submitted transcripts to ensure that applicants have obtained the required  minimum grades mentioned in the attached table

2) Academic Evaluation

All applicants who pass the transcript evaluation stage are evaluated by the members of academic evaluation committee in their respective academic program. At this stage, the evaluation takes into consideration all documents and certificates submitted by the applicant such as their academic records, resume, academic essay, personal statement and IELTS/TOEFL scores.

3) Interview Evaluation

Applicants who pass the academic evaluation stage are invited to an interview with members of the academic evaluation committee to discuss their academic interests. The committee assesses the student’s personal, academic and research skills. Interviews are held face-to-face for students living in Qatar and online for those living outside Qatar.

Please Note:

• No student may combine the scholarships of the Institute with any other scholarship whatever the source thereof.
• Only students who have a good academic standing continue to benefit from the Institute’s scholarships. The Institute may, in accordance with its procedures, withdraw  scholarship  from students who violate these requirements.
• The scholarships offered by the Institute shall not benefit the students enrolled in the Executive Masters or Diploma programs or specialized certificates.
• Scholarships offered by the Institute shall not benefit students who have previously benefited from the same scholarship in a previous period of study in any of the programs of the Institute, whether or not they are awarded a degree.

Qatar reportedly has a $100M fund for startups

Qatar unveiled its startup investment program at the recent Web Summit through its development bank. The program aims to attract seed and growth-stage tech companies seeking to establish or expand operations within the country. TechCrunch has learned that the program, known as the “Startup Qatar Investment Program,” is backed by a Qatar Development Bank (QDB)-managed $100 million fund.

In a statement, QDB revealed that the program will offer funding of up to $500,000 for early-stage startups looking to establish a presence in Qatar, and up to $5 million for growth-stage companies seeking to expand their operations in the Middle Eastern country. Additionally, the development bank highlighted that apart from financial support, it will provide portfolio startups access to markets and expertise. As stated on its website , the program targets startups in over 15 sectors, including fintech, clean tech, agritech, B2B SaaS, health tech, marketplaces, proptech, AI & ML and robotics.

“QDB is intensifying its efforts to position Qatar as a major hub for startups across various industries, particularly the tech sector due to its strategic importance,” said QDB CEO Mr. Abdulrahman Hesham Al Sowaidi. “Through these efforts, we aim to attract and retain talents in various fields to support our entrepreneurship ecosystem, foster innovation and accelerate technology adoption across all domains in a bid to contribute to a sustainable and business-friendly economy,” Al Sowaidi said.

Qatar’s startup program aligns with models employed by venture firms like U.S.-based Alpha Wave Global , which manages a $300 million early-stage fund (Alpha Wave Incubation) anchored by ADQ, one of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth funds. Across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), similar venture funds stipulate that startups from outside the region establish a “second” headquarters or office in their areas (which serve as bases for expanding operations across MENA and GCC) in return for funding and additional business advantages.

Qatar plots a $1B pipeline to VCs

Like most venture ecosystems, several of these requirements are mandated by limited partners, primarily sovereign wealth funds, in the Gulf upon these venture capital firms. Just last week, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund unveiled a $1 billion venture capital fund of funds dedicated to international and regional venture capital funds.

For Qatar, launching its fund of funds and startup program signifies a crucial step toward developing its tech ecosystem to rival its neighbors, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The urgency is evident, as data from emerging markets data tracker Magnitt reveals that Qatar represented only 6% of deals across the MENA region last year, with venture capital investment in its startups amounting to a mere 43 million Qatari riyal (~$11 million) in 2023. In contrast, Saudi Arabia accounts for 52% of the region’s deals, while the UAE dominates in terms of deal volume.

With that said, more competition contributes to the region’s advantage. Last year, the MENA region experienced a 23% decline in venture capital activity compared to the global average of 42%. Against this backdrop, Qatar’s heightened engagement in venture capital, spearheaded by its sovereign wealth fund and development bank, offers a promising outlook for the broader region, where 55% of investors involved in backing startups last year were local.
