59+ 2nd Grade Writing Prompts (+ Free Worksheets)
Keep on reading for a list of fun, educational and easy 2nd-grade writing prompts designed to interest any youngster.
When it comes to the 2nd grade, we all know that learning new words, spelling and legible handwriting is all-important. Bur rather than, asking students to just write their own name beautifully or to learn a list of words – could there be a more fun way of improving these skills? And the answer is yes. Through carefully thought-out writing prompts designed to peak your student’s interests, you could slowly, but surely increase your students interest in writing altogether.
Writing Struggles
Writing prompts for the second-grade students need to be detailed, and clearly state what is required. Something as simple as ‘write a short story about a dragon who loves to eat doughnuts’ – won’t cut it for most 2nd graders. You need to break this writing task down. A better prompt to give your students is, ‘write the opening sentence to a story about a dragon who loves to eat doughnuts.’ Here you are expected the child to only write down one sentence, which is a much more manageable task compared to asking the child to write a whole story.
At such a young age, developing a child’s creativity and imagination is key. Inside their little heads, they can tell great stories of fire-breathing dragons, superheroes and monsters. But putting it down on paper can be difficult for more children. Asking questions, and giving as many prompts as possible could really help the child write down their ideas, thoughts and feelings. At this point, you can worry less about sentence structure, punctuation and grammar, and encourage your child to be free with their writing!

Writing Help & Tips
Use the tips below to improve the writing process for your young writer and help to keep them engaged.
1. Writing Is Important
Show your second grader why writing is important. You can do so by modeling the importance of writing. For example, when you write stuff down do so in front of your child.
You can make this more powerful by reading out-loud what you are recording as you are writing it. Explain the value writing offers in the situation. Do what you can to help your child see the value of writing.
2. Proper Writing Tools
Be sure your child has the proper writing tools. This means the correct writing paper for your child’s age. The paper could have lines, no lines, or a fun pattern on it that your child loves.
Children also enjoy writing with their very own “special” crayons, pencils, or markers. You could make getting your child’s writing tools a big deal. Let your second grader know their writing tools are valuable. After all, they support them in learning vital life skills.
3. Easy Access to Writing Tools
Leave plenty of paper, crayons, markers, and pencils available for your child to use whenever they are feeling creative. Encourage your kids to draw and scribble as much as they want to.
Further, mix it up and ask children to draw and write about activities they did that day. You want them to get used to writing things down, especially in this age of technology.
4. Encourage Writing
Encourage your child to write, write, write. Write when they are happy, when they are sad, and when they are not sure how they feel. Ask them to write funny stories or their name over and over again. You could have them trace the letters of their first name. Ask them to read back to you everything that they wrote.
To further encourage a child’s writing skill development, do not correct the child on the mistakes that he or she makes. Doing so could end up making them feel bad about writing. Remember, this is writing practice, not a test.
If you decide to go ahead and correct mistakes, you must be gentle. This will help your child feel a little better about your feedback and not take it to heart.
5. Make Learning Writing Fun!
Learning to write doesn’t have to be a hassle or boring for children, rather you can make it fun. When learning any new skill, it has to interest and engage a child.
Consider playing games together that involve writing. For example, you could play hangman or Scrabble. You could even create a word search that has your child’s name in it.
Don’t forget to encourage your grade 2 child to write some fun stories that will make you both laugh and be sure to encourage them to draw plenty of pictures if they are the more artistic type (or even if they aren’t!).
6. Reward Your Child’s Writing Efforts
When you are offering writing help for second graders, it is important that you reward your child when they do a great job. It could be with their favorite food, a special trip to the grocery store to buy their favorite snack or spending quality time together. The reward could even be a new pack of markers and crayons.
Remember, when teaching writing, you and your child can have a great time. You’re learning and laughing together. Plus, you’re making fun memories that will last a lifetime
If you enjoyed these Writing Printables for 2nd Grade Students , please share them on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Pinterest. I appreciate it!
Until next time, keep on practicing those writing skills with your second graders…

2nd Grade Writing Prompt Worksheets
Related ela standard: w.2.3.
Students become more independent at this level and can be free to approach all these writing prompts on their own. This series of printable writing prompts will help students put themselves in a place that is fun and exciting. I would also start to get students in the habit of re-reading their own completed work.
By 2nd grade students are ready to enhance their sentences a bit. They are expected to use more descriptive words and tackle complex concepts. In most circumstances students are exploring the three traditional forms of writing at this level. This includes work that starts by focusing on expressing your opinion, informative pieces, and composing stories. We also expect 2nd graders to be able to edit and proofread their work to a lesser degree.

Creative Writing Projects for Second Graders
Here are some of the creative writing projects for the second graders. You can use these projects and activities to build the creative writing skills of your students.
Prompts are a great way to build creative writing skills at any age. Here are some prompts that you can give to the second graders. Which character would you choose to be from a book? What would you do differently if you were that character? How would you like to spend your three months of vacations? Share the scariest thing that has ever happened to you? Why was it scary and how did you overcome your fear? Which subject is your favorite at school? Why do you like it so much? What interests you about that subject? When did you have the most fun? Was it with friends or family? Talk about it.
Story Writing
When the students reach second grade, it is time to expose them to more complex topics so that they can build their creative writing skills. At this point, you can ask them to write a story of their choice. Let them know that they are free to create characters, settings, and conflict. It will be great exercise for their minds. Give them a free hand so that they can explore themselves and come up with interesting stories.
Another creative writing activity that you can do in your class is modeling. You can print a piece from the internet or a book that you think is the perfect model for creative writing that you can show to your students. Have copies of it and give those to your students. Tell them what is so perfect about that piece and how they can write such a perfect piece.
You can also play some light music on low volume in your classroom when the students are writing. This will create a peaceful environment in the class and your students will be able to focus better. This activity will produce great results.
