Current opportunities, assistant professor in playwriting.
The UBC School of Creative Writing invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Playwriting at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2023.
The successful candidate will be a recognized playwright. We are particularly interested in writers from underrepresented and/or racialized communities.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach 4 courses in dramatic writing, to contribute to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, to maintain an active program of creative activity, and to take on some administrative service. The candidate will also work with a team of students to put on the annual Brave New Play Rites Festival.
Requirements include: graduate degree (e.g., MFA in Creative Writing) preferred, but in exceptional cases a combination of education and appropriate writing and publishing experience may be considered; demonstrated excellence in playwriting (one or more major productions with an established theatre company preferred); evidence of or demonstrated potential for excellent teaching ability in university-level creative writing courses. Experience writing or teaching in a second genre is an asset.

Applicants should be prepared to upload the following documents (PDFs):

- a curriculum vitae
- a writing sample (20-30 pages)
- a teaching portfolio (which should include a statement of teaching philosophy and some or all of the following: student evaluations, peer assessments, 1-2 sample course syllabi)
- a one-page statement about your experience working with a diverse student body and your contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion
Applicants will be asked to provide letters of recommendation at a later stage in the process.

A successful applicant may be asked to consider an offer containing a deadline without having been able to make an in-person visit to campus if travel and other restrictions are still in place.
