DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will support the clinical research and quality improvement efforts of the study team. Support the clinical research operation; communicate with research participants, schedule visits, assist in the handling and processing of biological samples; shipping of samples for general lab assays and data entry. May be involved in clinical and quality improvement projects that also involve recruitment, and ensuring performance of protocols according to schedule, including data entry and reporting on data results back to participants. Incumbent will assist in the day-to-day operation of the research team. Responsible for assisting with and ensuring the quality of data collected, maintaining databases, ensuring adequate lab supplies for the function of the lab. Under supervision maintain a sample flowchart of active clinical studies and or quality improvement projects and how participants flow through these project protocols as well as monitoring study/project samples/data collections. Will assist clinical team with participant home study visits to collect questionnaire data and clinical specimens. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory or field experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in processing and shipping laboratory specimens-ambient and frozen. Demonstrated experience with guidelines of biohazardous handling. Knowledge and strict utilization of universal precautions when handling laboratory specimens.

Experience managing biological samples, storage, and inventory.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Proven effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Ability to prioritize workload and work independently.

Ability to maintain and protect confidentiality of participant information.

Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to propose alternative strategies to resolve issues.

Must be IATA-certified to process and ship human specimens.

Certified in hazardous materials handling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and Clinical Research experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,340 - $46,771 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.32 - $22.40

Emergency Management Specialist-COOP

The Emergency Management Specialist position resides in the Office of Emergency Management within the Laboratory Protection Division.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for the Continuity Program (COOP) as the COOP Coordinator for BNL, includes the quarterly accountability drills and COOP MEF exercise.  

Works as part of a team to assure that the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is operationally ready, to specifically include the areas relating to response personnel training, warning, communications, maps and displays, weather monitoring and IT infrastructure.

The ability to prepare professional reports and develop program materials and plans, and formal presentations.

Providing effective training in emergency management concepts to varied and diverse laboratory audiences, including senior management as required.

Ability to communicate concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of management, employees, guests, and representatives of regulatory agencies is required.

Must be able to effectively communicate and interface with the U.S. Department of Energy, state and local emergency management agencies, and other DOE contractors.

Maintaining plans and procedures and ensuring compliance with related DOE Orders and guidance.

Assisting with emergency planning to include development, maintenance and updating of the site emergency plan and local emergency and disaster plans.

Serve as a section chief in the Emergency Response Organization and ensure all ERO members are properly trained.  The ERO is a structured organization with overall identified responsibilities for initial and ongoing emergency response and mitigation. 

Assist the BNL Drill and Exercise Coordinator responsible for scheduling, execution, and evaluation of BNL Drill and Exercise Program. Conducts the Drill and Exercise Program to test emergency plans and the response capability of the emergency management system, first responders and internal and mutual aid partners.

Identify strengths and weaknesses of emergency preparedness plans, policies, systems, and procedures and make recommendations for improvements.

Additional assignments as directed by the OEM manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in public administration, emergency management, or equivalent science degree, with a minimum of 7 years of experience in emergency management.

Excellent working knowledge of computer systems, database and spreadsheet management, Microsoft Office products, and web-based business systems is required.

Demonstrated experience in emergency management practices, as well as advanced knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) is required. 

Demonstrated operational experience within an Emergency Operations Center and/or as a member of an emergency response team is required.

Demonstrated experience in plan and policy development required.

Demonstrated experience in conducting program surveys and assessments is required.

Experience developing training courses, exercises and after-action reports is required.

Demonstrated experience with hazardous material response is desirable.

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance.

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities :

Demonstrate experience managing multi agency emergencies with EOC activation.

Certificates of training in FEMA ICS 100, 200, 300, 400 & 700. 

Supervisory experience with emergency responders during a critical emergency, and/or supervisory experience in military operations in a deployed setting.  

Demonstrate experience interacting with federal/state/local emergency management agencies.

A working knowledge of DOE requirements, in particular, DOE Order 150.1B Continuity Programs and DOE Order 151.1D Comprehensive Emergency Management.

FEMA – National Continuity Training Program (NCTP), certificate or training.

Reporting to the Geothermal Energy and Subsurface Systems group, you will conduct subsurface research related to geothermal, carbon sequestration, or thermal energy storage. Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student enrolled full time at an accredited college/university studying Geology, Geoscience, Geotechnical Engineering
  • Experience or coursework in Thermal Energy Storage
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)
