What's Your Question?

What Is a Case Study?
When you’re performing research as part of your job or for a school assignment, you’ll probably come across case studies that help you to learn more about the topic at hand. But what is a case study and why are they helpful? Read on to learn all about case studies.
Deep Dive into a Topic
At face value, a case study is a deep dive into a topic. Case studies can be found in many fields, particularly across the social sciences and medicine. When you conduct a case study, you create a body of research based on an inquiry and related data from analysis of a group, individual or controlled research environment.
As a researcher, you can benefit from the analysis of case studies similar to inquiries you’re currently studying. Researchers often rely on case studies to answer questions that basic information and standard diagnostics cannot address.
Study a Pattern
One of the main objectives of a case study is to find a pattern that answers whatever the initial inquiry seeks to find. This might be a question about why college students are prone to certain eating habits or what mental health problems afflict house fire survivors. The researcher then collects data, either through observation or data research, and starts connecting the dots to find underlying behaviors or impacts of the sample group’s behavior.
Gather Evidence
During the study period, the researcher gathers evidence to back the observed patterns and future claims that’ll be derived from the data. Since case studies are usually presented in the professional environment, it’s not enough to simply have a theory and observational notes to back up a claim. Instead, the researcher must provide evidence to support the body of study and the resulting conclusions.
Present Findings
As the study progresses, the researcher develops a solid case to present to peers or a governing body. Case study presentation is important because it legitimizes the body of research and opens the findings to a broader analysis that may end up drawing a conclusion that’s more true to the data than what one or two researchers might establish. The presentation might be formal or casual, depending on the case study itself.
Draw Conclusions
Once the body of research is established, it’s time to draw conclusions from the case study. As with all social sciences studies, conclusions from one researcher shouldn’t necessarily be taken as gospel, but they’re helpful for advancing the body of knowledge in a given field. For that purpose, they’re an invaluable way of gathering new material and presenting ideas that others in the field can learn from and expand upon.

About the L’Oréal Employment Process
L’Oréal is one of the biggest names in the beauty industry and got that position by hiring great candidates. L’Oréal uses a number of aptitude tests, a telephone interview, case studies, group exercises and face-to-face interviews in their recruitment process. These assessments can be challenging, but with the right practice and preparation, you can boost your chances of getting hired and beginning your L’Oréal career!
Please note that the recruitment processes for L’Oréal UK and L’Oréal Australia differ slightly. We have detailed both below.
L’Oréal Online Application
The application for L’Oréal graduate schemes and internships takes approximately half an hour to complete and is very straightforward. You need to provide your basic details, education and work history along with attaching a CV and any supporting documents. Remember to include all relevant details such as extracurricular activities and relevant work experience.
Preparation is Key to Success in Your L’Oréal Tests
JobTestPrep's mission is to lead job applicants to the successful conclusion of their pre-employment process. Even if you see your test for the first time on your pre-employment assessment, you will know how to answer the questions as you will be up to date with the skills you need to pass the L’Oréal tests. Our carefully selected resources will improve your skills, visual accuracy and reasoning so well, that you will pass your pre-employment assessment at the company with great success.
L’Oréal Online Talent Q Aptitude Tests
If you are applying to L’Oréal, you will most probably be asked to take tests from the Talent Q Elements series . There are three tests in total: numerical, verbal and logical reasoning. These tests give L’Oréall an indication of your skills level and potential fit for the job.
Talent Q Verbal Reasoning Test
Verbal reasoning is a highly valued skill by L’Oréal and, as such, a good performance on the verbal aptitude test is essential. The test presents you with a series of short texts for you to read and analyse. Following each text are 2-3 statements about what you have read and you must decide if the statement is true, false, or cannot say. There are 12 questions on the test with a time limit for each question (rather than for the test as a whole). Our Talent Q-style verbal practice tests can help you overcome this challenging stage.
Talent Q Numerical Reasoning Test
Numerical skills are important in a range of roles at L’Oréal and the company evaluates your skills using a numerical reasoning test. The test is made up of 12 questions and each set of questions presents you with numerical data in the form of a table or graph. Use the information along with basic math functions to answer the questions. Brush up on these skills using our Talent Q-style numerical reasoning tests .
Talent Q Logical Reasoning Test
Logical reasoning tests give L’Oréal an indication of how you think. The logical reasoning test uses matrices which contain patterns of symbols and ask you to draw logical conclusions based on that information. This means determining the missing symbols from the matrices or what comes next in the pattern. This test can be tricky as you are given a large amount of answers to choose from and the test is adaptive, meaning it changes according to your level. Don’t let this test bring you down. Our Talent Q-style logical reasoning tests can help you to fully prepare yourself.
L’Oréal Pre-Selection Interview
If the results of your aptitude tests look promising, L’Oréal will contact you to set up a pre-selection interview. This interview is conducted either by telephone or by video call. This interview is meant to help L’Oréal learn more about you and ultimately decide whether to invite you to the next stage at the assessment centre. The interview lasts for 30 minutes and the questions are based on your CV so remember to have a copy nearby.
L’Oréal Assessment Centre
The L’Oréal assessment day is the final stage in the recruitment process and is your first chance to meet with L’Oréal recruiters face to face. The assessment centre can include a group exercise, case study and presentation, a second numerical test and attention to detail test and, finally, an interview. We have outlined all of these stages below.
Group Exercise
Group exercises are a great way for assessors to see how well you work with others. At the L’Oréal assessment day, during the group exercise candidates are often asked to simulate business negotiations based on information packets you are given. During the exercise, it’s important to make your voice heard, while keeping a balance, allowing others to speak and staying positive. For tips on how best to work through this stage, see our dedicated group exercise page .
Case Study and Presentation
Case studies are used for a variety of roles to assess your skills when reviewing new numerical and written data and using it to draw conclusions. The L’Oréal case study usually relates to a fictitious client or project and you are provided with all of the necessary information. In order to give you ample time to prepare, candidates are sent the case study beforehand to review and make notes. At the assessment centre, you are given another hour to make any last minute alterations and preparations for your research and presentation. Our case study practice pack has been designed to help you navigate the real thing and give you some useful practice and pointers.
Numerical Test
During the assessment day, you may be asked to take or retake a numerical test ( UK and AU applicants). For candidates who took the numerical reasoning test in the first stage, this test is used to verify your previous score.
Attention to Detail Test
Another test you may be asked to take is an attention to detail or error checking test. This test is used to assess your ability to comprehend a line of numbers or figures and compare it to other data. This test can be a challenge if you are not familiar with it and our practice tests can give you the preparation you need to succeed. Following these assessments, there is a lunch break followed by one-on-one interviews. Only candidates who were successful in the assessments are invited on to the interviews.
L’Oréal Interview
The last stage of the L’Oréal assessment day is the competency interview . As this is your only chance to meet with a L’Oréal recruiter face-to-face, make sure you make it count. The biggest piece of advice is to do your research on L’Oréal, its products and the company culture. Apart from competency questions, there are also some questions concerning your knowledge of the brand. The company uses this interview as a chance to see how good of a potential fit you will be, so make sure they see your best side.
Here are some examples of questions from past L’Oréal interviews:
- What are your favourite L’Oréal products?
- What is beauty in your view?
- What is your biggest strength and weakness?
- Tell us about a time you had to take charge.
- What do you think you will be doing in this role?
You may also be asked to give a SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threats) of a L’Oréal product. This may sound intimidating, but if this is the case you are sent the relevant information about the product prior to the interview so you can prepare.
Preparing for this final stage of the process is of the utmost importance; showing the company that you have done your research is sure to impress them. Our interview preparation service can give you all the help you need to make a winning strategy.

Potential employees will be asked to take one or several screening tests, based on the specific position they applied for. L’Oreal generally utilizes the IBM Kenexa tests during their employment process. This varies based on the location where you are taking the test. For instance, in the UK, the Talent Q numerical reasoning , verbal reasoning and logical reasoning tests are mostly used. The primary types of tests that L’Oreal uses are the numerical reasoning test, verbal reasoning test, and logical reasoning test. On occasion L’Oreal may also administer the SJT and/or some type of self-assessment personality test.
- Numerical Reasoning Test This test is usually around 20 to 30 minutes. It is designed to assess your deductive ability, as well as your proficiency with numerical data. You will be provided with tables, graphs, and charts containing data. You will need to understand the presented information and answer questions to demonstrate your comprehension. The answers are multiple-choice.
- Verbal Reasoning Test The verbal test will evaluate your reading fluency and reading comprehension. You will be presented with a paragraph of text that you will need to read and answer questions about. The answers are multiple-choice.
- Logical Reasoning Test The logical test is intended to assess your reasoning and analytical skills. You will be asked to interpret data that is presented in a diagram. The answers are multiple-choice.
- Situational Judgement Test (SJT) The purpose of this test is for L’Oreal to get a clear picture of your actions and reactions in the workplace. This is a multiple-choice test. You will be presented with a scenario that is related to the position you are applying for. About four or five hypothetical solutions will then be listed. You will need to select the most effective course of action. The most effective method to improve your score on the SJT is to acquaint yourself with the typical SJT questions by taking practice tests. Having a comprehensive understanding of the job you are applying for, and all the responsibilities it entails will also aid you on the SJT. The hypothetical situations that you are presented with will be directly related to the job you seek. As such, an understanding of your role can provide you with much-needed insight when taking the SJT.
- Personality Test You may be asked to complete a basic personality test . The purpose of a personality test is for L’Oreal to gauge whether your personality is a good match for the position you are applying for. There are a number of different types of personality tests. The most common personality tests are multiple-choice self-assessments. When taking any type of personality test, it is important to be authentic and answer the questions as truthfully as possible.
Telephone Interview
L’Oreal’s recruitment team will review your application. If you are selected as a possible candidate, you will be invited to a telephone interview.
L’Oreal’s Assessment Center
If the telephone interview went well, you will be directed to a nearby assessment center to participate in various exercises. The goal of the exercises is to evaluate your competency and skill level in a few areas that are relevant to the job you are applying for. Generally, there are two kinds of exercises that L’Oreal administers.
- Group Exercises This activity is conducted to gauge your ability to function as a member of a team. You will be tasked with partaking in a group activity while the assessors observe your behavior. The areas they will be analyzing are your communication skills, teamwork abilities, and your capacity to collaborate with others. To ensure that you succeed in this exercise, make sure to pay attention to your body language. It is also important to remember to interact with and include all members of the team. Lastly, be sure to speak confidently and clearly.
- Presentation Exercises This exercise is typically given to applicants who are interested in positions that require presentation skills. You will be given a slot of time in which you must prepare a presentation. You will be rated in communication, problem-solving and planning skill sets.Body language is an important component of this exercise as well. Be sure to stand upright, make eye contact with your audience, and speak succinctly. Make sure to address your audience periodically. Of course, keep an eye on the clock to ensure that you do not exceed the given time slot.
Final Interview
In order to get to know you better, before finalizing their decision L’Oreal will ask that you participate in another interview. You will be asked questions about your past and present behavior, as well as questions regarding hypothetical situations. It is a good idea to ask a few insightful questions of your own. If all goes well, you will be asked to participate in further interviews so that L’Oreal can continue to get to know you. Below are some interview tips that will help you feel confident at your interview:
- It is important to have clear, coherent replies to the questions that the interviewer poses to you. The most effective way to achieve this is to practice your responses in advance. Prepare a few specific examples of your past behavior, skills, and attributes that paint you in a positive light. Be prepared to answer questions about your goals. Have a ready answer for the ultimate question “why do you think you will succeed at L’Oreal”.
- Leadership, being a team player, and innovation are the three main qualities that L’Oreal stresses. These are the attributes that they are seeking in potential employees. Think of a few examples that demonstrate that you possess one or all of these qualities. The more solid your examples are, the more likely you are to curry favor with the interviewer.
- Do proper research about L’Oreal before showing up to the interview. If you know the details about the industry and about the position you seek, you will give a favorable impression.
- Contrary to most employers, L’Oreal actually encourages its employees to dress casually and comfortably! Take advantage of this and wear comfortable attire to the interview so that you are not distracted by confining clothing.
Decision & Offer
After all the appropriate information is garnered, the recruiter and human resources personnel will deliberate and then arrive at a decision. If they determine that you will be a good candidate for the position, they will extend an official offer of employment to you.
How to Prepare for L’Oreal’s Assessments?
So, how can you navigate the hiring process, and more specifically, ace the assessment tests? Practice, practice, practice! Practicing often is the key to success in the interviews and assessment tests. Practice responding to interview questions. Take multiple practice tests in numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and logical reasoning. Take a few practice Situational Judgement Tests. Practice always pays off! By practicing, you will hone your skills and get a feel for the actual questions you will face. Good luck!

What To Expect At A L'Oreal Assessment Center
L’Oreal is a French cosmetics company that was founded in 1909. It has since grown to become the largest cosmetics company in the world, operating in more than 130 countries. L’Oreal is known for its diverse range of products and innovative marketing strategies. It is also renowned for its rigorous recruitment process, which includes an assessment center.
In this blog, we will discuss what to expect at a L’Oreal assessment center, including why it is conducted, what skills are assessed, the format, and the group exercise, helping readers prepare.
Why does L’Oreal use assessment centers?
An assessment center is a process that is commonly used by organizations to evaluate potential employees. It is a series of exercises and activities that are designed to assess the skills and abilities of candidates in a simulated work environment.
L’Oreal uses assessment centers to evaluate the skills of candidates for specific job roles. The assessment center is a crucial part of the recruitment process as it provides an objective measure of the candidate’s abilities and ensures that the right candidate is selected.
What skills is L’Oreal looking for?
The assessment center is designed to evaluate a range of skills that are required for the job role. The specific skills that are assessed will depend on the specific job role, but some generic skills are assessed for all roles at the L’Oreal assessment center. These include:
The first skill assessed is communication . This test focuses on the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. This includes their ability to listen actively, ask questions, and convey their ideas clearly and concisely. This is essential in all roles due to working with a team and customers.
Next is problem-solving , candidates will be assessed on their ability to identify and solve problems. This includes their ability to analyze data, think critically, and make effective decisions.
Another skill tested is leadership . The main priorities for this test are the ability to lead and motivate a team. This includes their ability to delegate tasks, provide feedback, and manage conflict.
The final skill that all candidates will be assessed for is adaptability . This test measures the ability to adapt to new situations and work effectively in a team. This includes their ability to work under pressure, manage their time effectively, and collaborate with others.
L’Oreal assessment center format
The L’Oreal assessment center typically takes place over one or two days. The format of the assessment center will vary depending on the job role, but some core components are typically included. The main assessments of the day include a group exercise, case study presentation, and a range of aptitude tests such as numerical reasoning and attention to detail.
L’Oreal group exercise
The L’Oreal group exercise is a common activity in their assessment center which focuses on teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills. Typically, a group of candidates is given a realistic scenario that could happen within the role, such as launching a new product. The group is then asked to work together to develop a solution, using the resources and information provided. The exercise is timed and may involve a presentation of the group’s solution at the end. This also tears time management as well as presentation skills.
L’Oreal case study presentation
The L’Oreal case study presentation is a typical activity in their assessment center for evaluating candidates’ analytical, problem-solving, and presentation skills. Candidates are typically given a business scenario related to L’Oreal, such as launching a new product line, expanding into a new market, or addressing a specific marketing challenge. Candidates are given a limited amount of time to analyze the situation, come up with a strategy, and create a presentation to present their ideas to the assessors. The presentation is followed by a question-and-answer session, where assessors will evaluate the candidate’s knowledge of the L’Oreal brand and their ability to think strategically.
One example of this is having a specific brief such as ‘L’Oreal has identified a gap in the market for a new type of skincare product that targets millennials.’ As a candidate, you have been asked to develop a marketing strategy for the launch of this new product line. In this case study presentation, you will need to analyze the market for millennial skincare products and come up with a marketing strategy for the new product line. Your presentation should include an analysis of the target audience, product positioning, marketing channels, and promotional activities.
L’Oreal numerical reasoning test
A common aptitude test used with the L’Oreal assessment center is numerical reasoning . It evaluates someone’s ability to interpret and analyze numerical information. The test consists of multiple-choice questions that require the candidate to perform basic arithmetic, interpret graphs and charts, and solve numerical problems. The test is timed and designed to be challenging, to assess the candidate’s ability to think logically and make accurate calculations under pressure.
L’Oreal attention to detail test
Another aptitude test commonly used in the L’Oreal assessment center is the attention to detail test. This test is designed to evaluate a candidate’s ability to accurately and thoroughly review and analyze written or visual material for errors or inconsistencies. The test may include tasks such as proofreading documents for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, comparing sets of data for discrepancies, or identifying differences in images or patterns. This can also be called the error checking test .
Tips for passing the L’Oreal assessment center
Tip 1 research, research, research.
Research the company and its values beforehand to demonstrate your knowledge and alignment with the brand. You must have a secure understanding of the company and the specific role you are applying to.
Tip 2 Practice your presentation skills.
Practice your presentation skills and prepare thoroughly for any case studies or group exercises you may be asked to participate in. Presenting confidently is a huge part of the assessment and is the best way to sell yourself. Make sure you have practiced speaking in front of people and talking about the topic.
Tip 3 Show initiative.
No matter what role you are applying for, always show initiative and leadership skills. Get involved in all situations, especially groups, and get yourself seen. It is easy to follow a group but it doesn’t show independence or what you’re capable of.
Tip 4 Be creative
Showcase your creativity and innovation by coming up with unique and original ideas during group exercises and case studies. L’Oreal values individuals who can bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table, so be sure to demonstrate your ability to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to challenges.
Tip 5 Stay positive
Always stay positive. Maintaining a positive and professional attitude throughout the assessment center will give you the extra confidence to impress employers. Even when feeling nervous, positivity goes a long way.

This part is quite short. Overall, given that I also went through the final round of other leading fmcg companies, I think the one in Loreal is not as tough as others. However, I do enjoy it the most because I think their process does encourage me to be myself and it’s the only place that I felt happy every time I went to do an interview with them. My recommendations for those who would like to apply (Can be used here or at other companies. I followed these steps and got a MT offer from every companies I applied): 1. Be prepared about the company’s work and background. Make sure to do some analysis on it not just memorizing. You need to truly understand their problem and be able to give a valuable and solid comments in order to stand out from other candidates 2. Be confident, this is the most important part. It shows through your gestures and words whether you are confident or have a good understanding of what you are talking about. As I have a work exp, I think this is the biggest mistake that prevent fresh grad from actually get this job. So be confident! 3. I think this is the most important part. You must be fluent in English (in terms of speaking and presenting). Only casual conversation is not enough. You english proficiency will be a great part that helps boost your confidence when presenting too.

Management Trainee Program Interview
Anonymous Interview Candidate in Singapore
I applied online. I interviewed at L'Oréal (Singapore) in Nov 2022
Stage 1: online application Stage 2: short written test Stage 3: assessment centre (case study discussion and presentation) Stage 4: assessment centre (panel interview) there's a lot of people shortlisted for the assessment centre (think 2 rooms full of maybe 50 people each, competing for a place in a 5 people team). it is a pretty competitive environment where everyone is trying to stand out (which honestly gives you a glimpse into the l'oreal work culture). you are given a case study 3 days before the assessment but during the discussion your group only has a short amount of time to discuss, so come prepared with your ideas. for marketing, the case study is usually to plan a campaign based on information given about l'oreal and product performance etc. a few people from the group will then present and there's a Q&A session with the assessors after. in the group discussion, you have to be outspoken and confident in your opinions but still let other people have the chance to speak. also ideal to be one of those presenting. from the case discussion, more people will be filtered out and not everyone will be selected for the panel interview. for the panel interview, there's 3-4 assessors per candidate. it is quite an intimidating atmosphere. expect questions about your performance during the case study and behavioral questions. to be frank, the interviewers are biased towards ex-loreal interns (they are asked questions about their l'oreal internship experience rather than the standard questions) and the final team is usually mainly composed of them, so don't hold high hopes even if you think you are capable and performed well during the assessment centre. there's a high chance your spot will still be given to an ex-loreal intern. some of the interviewers also give off an arrogant aura, filled with self-importance. good to attend for some assessment centre experience, just don't have any expectations if you didn't intern at l'oreal previously. to the l'oreal management team, would appreciate if there was actually an equal playing field in the application process, otherwise please just spare the other applicants from wasting their time and don't give them false hope.

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Melbourne
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at L'Oréal (Melbourne) in May 2020
This interview process went through several stages. Including a 2 day assessment center. For which you find out if you make it to the second day in the first day interview. This involved a lot of group tasks. They want you to take initiative and speak up where appropriate and encourage your group members.

I applied online. I interviewed at L'Oréal (Hong Kong) in Mar 2020
There were many stages for the interview. You have to submit an introduction video to get shortlisted, and then there will be a written test and a phone call interview. After that, there will be a panel group interview where you need to prepare a presentation beforehand, and to debate with other candidates, the last stage will be a final interview with the manager.
