How to Make a Quiz In PowerPoint (How to Use PowerPoint Quiz Templates)

Let’s learn how to create a fun, interactive PowerPoint quiz in just a few quick steps. A proven way to boost audience engagement is to get them involved. An interactive quiz PPT is a great way to do that.

Remember, you don’t have to use a slide specifically designed for quizzes. Instead, you can build slides of your own. For our tutorial, we’ll use Agio to show you ga-analytics#sendElementsClickEvent">how to make a quiz game  on PowerPoint. This template works great for PowerPoint multiple-choice questions and answers.

Agio quiz presentation PPT

Let’s walk through exactly how to change any slide into a multiple-choice PowerPoint game in just four easy steps. It's easier than you think to create a multiple-choice PowerPoint. Then we’ll review and add it to another slide deck.

1. Customize Questions and Answers

When you make a quiz in PowerPoint, questions and answers are the key feature. It makes sense to start there. Begin by quickly removing clutter from the slide. This includes two subtitles, along with footers in the lower corners.

Click on any of the text boxes. Then hold down Shift on your keyboard while selecting the other items. Then, press Delete . Now you’ll have a cleaner slide to work with.

PowerPoint quiz step 1

Adding custom Q&A is easy. In the title box, highlight the current text inside, then start typing over it to add a question. Remember, you may need to expand or resize a text box for your text to fit inside.

To resize a text box, click and drag on a corner to scale it. Repeat those simple steps in each of the four designated answer blocks.

2. Change Font Colors and Styles

Changing font styles and colors is easy, and a leading way to add contrast. Let’s change the color and style of the word “Trivia” and each of the four answer possibilities.

Begin by highlighting “Trivia.” Navigate to the Home tab on PowerPoint’s ribbon. The left half includes the Font group, and that’s where to find text options. A shade of green would add subtle contrast, so click on the Font Color drop-down.

PowerPoint quiz step 2

A pre-built theme like Agio will include its own set of Theme Colors . These are customized color palettes unique to the template. Those will display first, with Standard Colors (typical PPT colors) immediately below. For the most customization, click More Colors , which brings up a color wheel for exact color creation.

There’s a nice shade of green within Standard Colors, so go ahead and click on it. PowerPoint will apply it to the highlighted text automatically. Go ahead and use these same steps to other blocks of text you want to change.

Pro tip : for the answer choices, if you want the same color for all four, select all four text boxes by using Shift + Click . In this way, your color edit will apply to all of them at once.

3. Add Custom Icons

The icons shown on the slide can be used to reveal the right and wrong answers. The Agio template includes hundreds of customized icons. Another option is to use PowerPoint’s built-in symbol library. This can be found on the Insert tab under Symbols .

Agio’s symbols are on the very last slides in the template. A check mark would make sense for the correct answer, with an X-mark for an incorrect one. Browse through the icon choices until you find each of these. Then select both using Shift + Click  and copy them to your clipboard by using Ctrl + C on Windows or Cmd + C on Mac.

PowerPoint quiz step 3

Back on your slide, paste them in with Ctrl / Cmd + V . Delete the existing icons, and then click and drag these into place.

For a multiple-choice quiz, you’ll want three X-marks, so repeat the copy/paste technique to duplicate them. Then position them into place, and you’re all set.

4. Build Animations to Build Suspense

Your PowerPoint presentation quiz won’t be much fun if the audience can identify the right answer immediately. The solution: animate the icons onto the slide one by one, after people have had the chance to answer.

Some slides may be pre-animated, but it helps to start with a clean slate. Click on the first icon. Then go up to the Animations tab. On the right side, click Animation Pane . Select the list of animations with Shift + Click , then press Delete.

PowerPoint Quiz step 4

The vision for this slide is to have all content except the four icons already visible. Then, with a click, each of the four will display one by one. Here, a simple effect is best.

To add an animation, click Appear on the left side of the Animations tab. The animation is applied to the shape. Repeat these steps to add animations to the other three icons.

Finally: Review and Insert

When you’re finished with your quiz presentation PPT, review your slides to ensure everything is working the way you’d envisioned. To do that, choose Slide Show on the ribbon, then click on Play from Current Slide.

You might prefer to add this slide to an existing PPT file. Copying and pasting slides between templates is easy. Click on the slide thumbnail in PowerPoint’s sidebar, then copy it with Ctrl + C or Cmd + C .

Jumping to the slide deck you’re pasting into, right-click in the sidebar in the location you wish to paste to. To keep the formatting we just applied, choose Keep Source Formatting . If you need to match the new file, Use Destination Theme is the right choice.

How to Add Polls and Q&A to Your PowerPoint Slides With Slido

With Slido, you can easily add live polls and quizzes to your PowerPoint presentations. Here's how to use it!

You have to keep your audience engaged when you are delivering an online presentation or an in-person training. Slido helps you incorporate polls and quizzes into your presentations.

Additionally, you can use it directly on PowerPoint. That way, the experience can be seamless for both you and your audience.

What Is Slido Used For?

Slido allows you to create polls, questions, and interactive elements for presentations. This is something that many presenters would like to include in their presentations. All users have to do is head to Slido.com and enter their selected code.

You don't have to install or download anything. Participating in your polls is as simple as opening up a web browser on their phone, tablet, or other devices.

Related: Best Academic, Event, and Advertisement Poster Templates for PowerPoint

You could begin your presentation by asking a multiple-choice question to the audience. It is an excellent way to gauge the mood of your audience. It also helps in making your audience focus on the presentation right from the start. To use Slido for this purpose:

This tool also updates automatically in real-time. And so you love to see how people get excited as these bars change over time. If new people join in or if people change their answers, updates will happen in real-time.

It's always fun to see what will win and what people are really thinking during a training session. We'll now see how Slido lets you integrate polling, Q&A, as well as audience responses into PowerPoint.

How to Integrate Slido Into PowerPoint?

From your presentation, you can access all the Slido tools and features using its PowerPoint extension.

You can take a presentation you had prepared and add Slido polls, questions, even an audience Q and A right into the slides. This means you no longer have to switch between your presentation and your browser tab. To integrate Slido in PowerPoint:

So for example, here is that exact same question that we saw before.

As soon as you advance to the next slide, it will open up this poll for everyone. You don't have to set up another screen if your presentation is via a webinar. There is no need to hide another tab or another window. You can proceed directly to this question. Everyone can take part and answer.

Here you can talk about the results as a trainer or an instructor. After that, you can move on to the next slide. There will be no interruption in your presentation as you poll your audience.

Adding another interaction in the same presentation is also simple. Just go to the slide you want to add it to and then go to the slide window.

Here, we can select an open text question for a change.

Likewise, you could ask about how your inbox looks like. You can also allow participants to select multiple answers. Unchecking this will limit the number of responses per participant.

Moreover, you can specify when those results should appear, and how they will be displayed. For instance, you can specify show results immediately . Once you click on Add To Presentation , you will see this question on your left-hand side.

In your presentation view, you can advance to this question immediately after showing the selected slide. Slido opens up automatically, so your audience sees this.

Anyone who joins this active poll can now submit their answers. We can all watch them together, and you as the instructor can get some really useful feedback.

Related: Microsoft PowerPoint vs. Google Slides: Which One Should You Be Using?

When you are a trainer, instructor, or presenter, do you ever wonder what is on people's minds? Maybe you could come to know this by adding a useful Q and A session after your presentation.

Add a Q&A to Your PowerPoint Slide With Slido

You can include a Q & A slide between your slides so that you can answer questions before moving on to the next topic. Just select the Audience Q & A option from the interaction sidebar.

Everything else is the same. As soon as you get to the particular slide, it will open up the Q and A tab. So everyone can see what others are asking. It's not necessary to share this with all participants. You can also filter out particular questions.

Slido for PowerPoint Features

Let's now look at some of the advanced features that are helpful to instructors. The first thing you will notice is how easy it is to read. Anyone who shares this on a big screen or through Zoom on a conference call can comfortably see the slides.

Participants can also give a thumbs up to certain questions. From a presenter's standpoint, it's useful because you may not have time to answer everyone's questions. What you should do, though, is answer the most common question. As you can see, the first question has the most thumbs-up, so you should surely allocate as much time as possible to answer it.

These features aren't all there is. You can choose the double-upward-arrow icon to highlight a question and really make it stand out for everyone watching.

Now simply answer this question. Everyone knows what you're talking about, and even if you answer other questions, this is what everyone is watching. The question stays highlighted and stays at the top.

You can remove this when you're finished answering it by hitting this checkmark icon. As a result, others will stop voting for it. Plus, you won't be distracted both as a presenter and as a participant. You may also remove the highlight by clicking the downward arrow.

You simply need to move on to the next slide in your presentation deck once you've finished your questions. This is an excellent way to engage your audience and make your job as a presenter easier.

Uses for a Live Q&A

Broadly speaking, a live Q&A is part of a larger picture. That picture can be a meeting, a webinar, a lesson, or any event in which you want to give information and clear up any misunderstandings through question and answer…

Team Meeting s

You're really not the only one to have felt lost in a team meeting. With plans being made and remade, while stats, quotes, and graph upon graph are pulled up in between, it's hard to keep everyone on the same page. A live question and answer after each important point can really help all team members stay afloat.

Townhall Meeting

Naturally, when you gather a whole company together for a townhall meeting (or all-hands meeting ), there should be plenty of questions coming your way. Any company with more than a handful of employees may struggle to keep on top of this, but a live Q&A tool can keep things beautifully ordered.

For Education...

There are lots of ways to test understanding of a topic. Tests, assignments and extended projects are all great in the long-run, but for a quick way to dispel any minconceptions before students leave the class, a 5-minute Q&A at the end of each lesson can make a world of difference.

Training and Development

It's no secret why the sound advice of most training sessions falls on deaf ears. If an audience are going to be in their chairs for hours on end, they're going to need some interaction. A Q&A gives them that, as well as the chance to ask questions to the trainer that haven't been covered so far.

Ask me Anything (AMA)

Vloggers, celebrities, company CEOs; you can find some really interesting people on Reddit inviting readers to ask them anything. It's a format that's taken off across not just social media, but in vlogs, podcasts, and even amongst best friends . An online Q&A platform can set a solid AMA from a sloppy one.

Virtual Events

It's a remote world nowadays. We've got a new, digital way to work, learn, hangout and gather together in spaces. No matter where your event is happening, get an online Q&A tool that lets anyone submit a question at any time from wherever they are in the world.

Have a good Heading

The right heading to your Q&A gets everyone thinking and talking. Try out something a little unexpected.

Always a bountiful source of whimsical quotes, Abraham Lincoln once said “ give me 6 hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first 4 sharpening the axe “.

You may not be felling any trees by hosting a Q&A online, but you’ll certainly be trying to topple the barriers between you and your audience. And, to do this, you’ll need to prepare .

Now, you’ll obviously never be able to predict exactly what your audience is going to ask, but you can get a pretty good idea by finding out what they want to take away from your Q&A session. A great way to do this is by using interactive software like AhaSlides.

A word cloud , like the image above, can give you a much better understanding of the topics that your audience wants to discuss in the Q&A. It asks your audience what they’d like to talk about and then lays out all of their answers in one grid. The ones with identical wording appear large and at the centre, revealing which topics are the most popular.

Doing this before the Q&A begins gives you time to prepare for the questions that your audience most want answered later.

Click here for more advice on how to set up the perfect word cloud .

Tip #2 – Order and Display it Professionally

Putting some time into the display and organisation of your Q&A online gives the audience a chance to see what’s been asked and what’s been answered .

Again, it’s easy to do this using AhaSlides. There’s a dedicated Q&A slide (like in the image above) that gives you full moderating power over your audience’s questions.

Here are a few of the ways that a Q&A slide keeps everything neat, tidy and most importantly, engaging:

Remember: hosting a Q&A online means that your questions can come in at any time .

This means that if you’re holding a presentation, your audience can ask you questions throughout. This keeps the flow of the presentation alive and allows audience members to submit questions as soon as they pop into their heads.

Dedicate at least 1/5th of your allotted time to the Q&A ( Guy Kawasaki actually recommends 2/3rds! ) Or, spend a few minutes after each section engaging with the audience via a brief Q&A that ensures they’re all keeping up.

An offline Q&A event using online features to organise and display questions.

What if you’re not hosting your Q&A online? What if it’s an in-person event? Well, you can still make use of online features for better display and organisation.

Allow your audience to submit questions to an online Q&A canvas . Having these on the same screen means you can address each of them individually and methodically.

Want to get right to it? Find out how to set up a Q&A slide with AhaSlides here.

Tip #3 – Share it Online!

If you’re restricted by time or simply want to leave your Q&A answers out there for your audience to come back to at any time, you have the option with AhaSlides to share your presentation and your Q&A online .

The trick to doing this is to use your computer to record your audio answers of questions that pop up in your Q&A. After that, use AhaSlides to make a slide for each answer, with the question as the title and your embedded audio response.

Share your presentation virtually with AhaSlides.

This way, you can manage the questions and remove the duplicates. Your audience will also have an organised overview of what’s been fielded throughout the session and will have a reliable source for reference after it’s done.

How to Nail the Q&A After Your Presentation

powerpoint slide for q&a

You can’t rehearse it, but you can be prepared.

When preparing to give a presentation, most professionals focus their energy on the main portion of their talk — their key messages, slides, and takeaways. And far too few people think through how you’ll answer questions at the end of the presentation can be a big mistake. If you’re worried about how to hand the Q&A, there are several things you can do. Change your mindset. Rather than dreading this part of the talk, develop an appreciation for the conversation. It’s a good thing that people have follow-up questions and want to further engage with your content. Beforehand, think through the types of questions audience members might ask. Put yourself in your shoes and ask yourself what concerns they might have about how your message impacts their job. Then, when you’re asked a question, especially one that might be contentious, start your answer by focusing on where you and the person asking it agree. This makes the person feel seen and connected to you. And if you’re asked a question out of left field, be curious. Ask follow-up questions that help you understand what they’re getting at and where they’re coming from.

If you’re not a huge fan of public speaking , you’re in good company. It’s such a widely shared source of anxiety that when psychologists want to induce unpleasant stress in a person for experimental purposes, they often use a public speaking task called the Trier Social Stress Test . The test requires people to give a talk and do sums in front of a panel of impassive listeners, and it reliably generates stress markers such as a faster heart rate, raised cortisol levels, and “enhanced skin conductance,” which is the polite way of saying sweaty palms.

Of course, we can reduce our nerves by preparing well for our presentations. But when I help professionals get ready for a big meeting, I often hear about a specific concern. One of my clients recently told me, “I know my slides. I’m on top of the numbers and I’ve practiced my anecdotes. But I don’t look forward to the Q&A. I don’t know what people are going to ask, so I worry I won’t have a good answer for their questions. Or worse, that I’ll say something dumb.”

Unfortunately, research suggests they have a point. When we’re asked a tough question and we’re not sure how to respond, it can make us feel like we’ve lost control of the situation. That feeling gets coded as a potential threat by our brain, so it powers up a defensive fight-or-flight response while restricting activity in the parts of the brain associated with more complex reasoning . This redirection of mental resources makes perfect sense if the threat is a fire, and we simply need to run from a burning building as fast as possible. But it’s also why our mind can go blank just as we need to muster a brilliant comeback under pressure.

To allow yourself to think more clearly and creatively when faced with questions that aren’t easy to answer, you need to reduce the sense of threat and give yourself back a sense of control. Here are four approaches to practice.

Appreciate the conversation

Dead silence after you finish speaking is not what you want, unless you’re delivering a sermon in a monastery. Remind yourself that questions are good. They are a sign of an interesting talk, since they mean that your audience has paid attention to what you’ve said and is now actively reflecting on your content. Reframe the Q&A as a rewarding conversation that signals healthy engagement, and your brain is less likely to be on the defensive — which means you’ll be more likely to bring your best self to bear. Two specific things to try:

The second of those approaches delivers the additional benefits of giving yourself an extra moment to think about your reply and of making your audience feel valued. While recording a podcast recently, I was asked a question by the host that I didn’t immediately know how to answer so I told him that he had asked a good question before I began my response. Later, he admitted “I know it’s silly, but I couldn’t help but feel good when you praised the quality of my question, even though I knew you were giving yourself a moment to think.”

Channel your empathy

Usually people ask questions not because they’re trying to trip you up, but because they want to understand the practical impact your ideas may have on their own job — their workload, their priorities, and their chances of success. So as you prepare the content of your presentation, make sure to also spend time seeing the content through the eyes of your audience. Consider what you would ask at the end of your talk if you were in their shoes. Think about three common themes that come up in the Q&A:

Considering your audience’s perspective helps you stay calm by reminding you that you’re dealing with human beings, not enemy combatants. It also makes it more likely that you’ll have impact with your ideas.

I remember some years ago sitting with my team before a meeting with the board of a nonprofit, where we had helped build a new strategy for the organization. As we huddled around the flip chart ahead of the presentation and thought about the perspective of each person on the board, it dawned on us that the CEO might have particular reasons to feel wistful about letting go of past priorities. Thanks to this small amount of empathetic forethought, we were less unsettled by the questions he asked in the meeting and better able to emphasize ways that the new proposal built on his past successes, which helped the whole board enthusiastically endorse the new plan.

Start with agreement

Sometimes someone asks a question because they disagree with you. This can be a particularly delicate moment to handle, because disagreement all too easily puts people’s brains into defensive fight-or-flight mode . To help both of you think clearly and constructively, start your answer by focusing on where you agree. This helps create what psychologists call “in-group” — a sense of being on the same team and sharing common ground. It roots the exchange in the kind of mutual respect that helps to reduce the sense of threat in the situation.

Follow these steps ( adapted from game theorist Anatol Rapaport ) to defuse tension:

I saw this done well by a senior manager in a tech company who was being challenged by a colleague on her ambitious timeline for a new product launch. Her response ran something like this: “If I understand you right, you feel it isn’t realistic to try to launch in three months. I think we all want to make sure the product is rock solid when it goes to market, and I agree timing is tight. I’m more optimistic than you about our chances of making this a success, though, because we’ve found a way to double the staff working on the project. I can tell you more about this offline.” By showing that she truly acknowledged and even agreed with some of her colleague’s perspective, her response was accepted more fully than if she had simply tried to reassure her colleague that all was going to be fine. She made him feel heard rather than dismissed.

Parry with curiosity

Sometimes the question you’re asked feels truly out of left-field, and it can make even the savviest presenter scramble for a response. This can happen when an audience member is trying to be entertaining or informative (“Isn’t this just like the Japanese knotweed problem?”) or, more commonly, when someone wants to shine a light on a very specific situation that they’re personally dealing with. (“What are you going to do about the data on page 16 about the outages last month? It’s killing us.”)

You can’t prepare an answer for this sort of unpredictable question. But you can be ready with a helpful state of mind: curiosity. Learning has been found to be inherently rewarding to our brains , which is one reason that asking a question of your own can be just enough to get you off the defensive. For example, you might say:

And if you’re still left scratching your head after that gambit, go back to the first strategy above and appreciate the horizon-broadening input. “I’m not sure about that, but thank you — I’ll look into it and get back to you.” After all, you never know when you might need to know about knotweed.

A better Q&A starts by ditching the questions slide

Presenter in front of Q&A slide

An effective PowerPoint presentation is complementary. It enhances what the speaker is saying by summarizing information, giving additional details, or visualizing what’s being discussed.

Ask yourself, which of those does a “Thank you!” or “Questions?” slide accomplish? It’s a missed opportunity. There are better alternatives that drive home the key points of your presentation and help the audience retain some of what you said days, and weeks, later.

You can still thank the audience. You can still ask for questions. But your PowerPoint should be doing something else, something complementary. Here are some suggestions to help you replace that questions slide with a more effective alternative.

I’ve included those suggestions below. But first: a quick primer on the science of an effective presentation.

How do you make your ending memorable?

Dr. Carmen Simon, cognitive neuroscientist and founder of Memzy , has written extensively about how to structure an effective, memorable presentation.

“Ultimately, recall is impacted by inconsistency or a deviation from the pattern,” wrote Simon. “An audience will remember the ending more if it is highly inconsistent with the rest of the presentation. This is because distinctiveness can only be judged relative to the number of items you have shown an audience.”

An effective ending is distinct from the rest of your presentation.

It’s a break from the norm. If you’ve been lecturing for an hour, close on a video. If you’ve been hosting an open forum, close on a personal anecdote. Get creative.

Fielding questions is also an excellent choice. However, an open mic and a questions slide is going to be too intimidating for some audience members. In the time it normally takes you to hear from one person, you could be collecting insights from the entire audience. Here’s how:

Read more: How to structure a presentation your audience will remember

Replace the questions slide with a live poll

An audience response system such as Poll Everywhere lets the audience submit questions simultaneously from the privacy of their phones. Feedback is instant and appears live in PowerPoint for everyone to see.

Poll Everywhere also lets respondents upvote questions from their peers. Questions that receive more votes move to the top of the list, so you know exactly what the audience needs to hear.

Instead of a Q&A, you could also take this opportunity to surprise the audience with a pop quiz. A few multiple-choice questions covering what you discussed forces them to become active participants instead of passive listeners. This mental shift will help improve retention.

If the audience does poorly on a particular question, you can take the opportunity to quickly recap that section of your presentation. If they ace the whole thing, then your work is done.

Read more: How to ask great Q&A questions at any event

Transform your final slide into a resource

Don’t forget that the end of your presentation needs to be different from what came before. If you already used an audience response system throughout your presentation, its effectiveness at the end will be diminished. If that’s the case, here’s one last piece of advice: make your final slide a shareable resource.

On your final slide, list out a summary of key takeaways from your presentation as a bulleted list.

Consider adding some personal contact information if people have follow-up questions. At a minimum, include resources where people can learn more.

Suggest that the audience snap a photo of the slide using their phones, or even print out physical copies and distribute them during the Q&A. The audience will appreciate it more than a “Thank you!” slide.

“Ultimately, recall is impacted by inconsistency or a deviation from the pattern. An audience will remember the ending more if it is highly inconsistent with the rest of the presentation.” – Dr. Carmen Simon

Too Many Questions PowerPoint Template – a help support design compilation of slides and PowerPoint shapes. Enhance FAQ or Question and Answer presentations using this question slide template . The creative objects in the layout are excellent visual aids that can entertain the audience’s eyes.

FAQ is internet slang for a list of commonly asked questions associated with a subject matter or topic. A blog, for example, can develop a FAQ page about the author’s life and career. Questions regarding the author’s educational and work background can be displayed on that particular page. Here are some cases:

Question and Answer portions are casually done in a report. The speaker can allow the audience to ask related questions after every discourse. For example, in an open forum, the presenter can delegate time to participate and ask questions. Usually, this is done with an open mic that participants can approach anytime.

Catchy flat 3D PowerPoint objects like question marks, business people, and spherical text boxes are present in the slides. Eight unique slides compose this template. Male cartoon characters appear to be pondering on the first and second slides. The third slide design includes spherical text placeholders to enter critical questions. In the 6th slide, team members have the same question for the leader. The slides can supplement a more extensive presentation.
