Embracing Change: Moving Forward Through A Major Transition

Embracing Change: Moving Forward Through A Major Transition

June 22, 2020

Embracing Change

With the right strategies, you can begin embracing change and build the life you’ve always dreamed of.

Not in his goals but in his transitions man is great. Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you were to bake a cake, what’s the first thing that you picture? Perhaps you imagine the cake itself, a yummy tower of chocolate with rich buttercream icing on top.

When setting out to accomplish something, like baking a cake, we often think in terms of the outcome. Instead of savoring the experience of preparing the cake, we create expectations of the end product, missing out on enjoying the process.

We often look at our goals in life in the same way. Whether we want to make a big change, or a change happens to us, we visualize the outcome. We set expectations.

But this way of thinking can make it difficult to navigate through change. After all, making a big change in life doesn’t happen overnight. The road to achievement comes with all sorts of twists, turns, and dead ends.

People often become so obsessed with the expectations, they feel disappointed or are quick to give up when things don’t go perfectly . And let’s face it — life never goes as planned.

While it’s certainly helpful to set goals, fixating too much on the end result means missing out on opportunities for personal development, growth, and even having a little fun along the way.

That’s why embracing change is so important. Although you can’t predict the future, you can learn to navigate transitions, how to prioritize your life more effectively, and to become more resilient along the way.

How to manage change: The Transition Model

Although it’s impossible to predict the future, understanding what to expect, you’ll have a better idea of how to manage the uncertainties that come along with change.

The William Bridges’ Transition Model provides a roadmap through the emotional landscape of change. The model identifies three phases: Ending What Currently Is, The Transition Zone, and The New Beginning.

The New Beginning Phase Chart

Ending What Currently Is

The beginning of change is also the end of something. Whether a relationship changes or a job ends, we often find ourselves at a moment when a phase of life comes to an end. It feels a lot like the ending of a chapter in a book.

Change isn’t easy. When something shifts, a lot of different emotions can come up. It can feel confusing, stressful, or just plain scary. You can experience sadness, or a bit of numbness. You may even feel excitement for the new beginning that you’re moving toward.

The Transition Zone

As you move from the ending, you find yourself in a transition period, or the neutral zone. You haven’t quite ended the ending. You haven’t quite started the beginning. In between a period of change, it takes time for the transition to occur.

During the transition zone, you can feel a lot of mixed emotions. It can feel confusing, frightening, and overwhelming. You may feel self-doubt, unbalanced, lost, or numb.

But guess what? That’s completely normal.

Uncertainty is a natural part of any adjustment period. When you realize that, you can accept some of the uncomfortable feelings that arise during the transition process, knowing that with resilience and patience, you’ll come out on the other side, stronger than before.

A New Beginning

Finally, you make it through the transition period. You embark on a new beginning.

Yes, you may feel some of the twinges from the ending. You might notice some of the numbness from the transition zone. But at this point, you’ll start to get your footing. As you progress, this new chapter in your life will feel more comfortable.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully made it through the difficult transition period. The change is complete.

6 Ways to Embrace Change

essay on embracing change

Navigating transitions isn’t easy. Sometimes it’s downright scary! But just like anything in life, even the difficult times will pass.

Embracing change means you see adversity as an opportunity. Embracing change means you want to try new things, be adventurous, or improve yourself. To embrace change, you need to see things in a positive light and know you have the ability to do anything.

Having the right perspective, embracing change becomes easier. In fact, I know of 6 strategies that will help you navigate the uncertainty of transitions, and even embrace the full spectrum of challenges in the neutral zone.

1. Take risks

take risks

Remember that even though change isn’t easy, life is too short to stay stuck in your comfort zone. When you have a big dream in mind, you have to stick your neck out there if you want to build the life you’ve always wanted.

So have a little courage, and be patient with yourself. Although scary at first, small steps, over time, can lead to huge changes.

In other words, be willing to step out of familiar routines and step into something new. Even if it doesn’t work out, you’ll grow and build confidence as you tackle new challenges along the way.

2. Have a coach or mentor

Embracing change isn’t easy, but you don’t have to go through it alone.

A coach or mentor on your team can guide you and keep things in perspective. You may get stuck in your head sometimes and need a sounding board to express challenges and bounce ideas.

They can help you recognize the limited thought patterns that can prevent you from reaching your new beginning. You’ll have a cheerleader on the sidelines, helping you stay motivated even when things don’t go your way.

There are plenty of accessible ways to get support and encouragement, even if you don’t have the bandwidth to invest in personal coaching or find a formal mentor. You can join a mastermind group, find a supportive online community, or take a course, like our Reinvention Rx .

3. Keep creating

creative activities for embracing change

Creative activities make you happier, healthier, and smarter. Make time to express yourself through drawing, gardening, fencing, or whatever you enjoy. Exercising your creativity enables you to release the uncomfortable emotions experienced during change in a healthy way.

It’ll keep your mind sharp, too. The internal pathways will stay fluid by continually having your creative juices flowing.

This will give you fuel for finding innovative approaches through new, unfamiliar waters. You may even discover new passions along the way.

4. Keep learning

Growth often comes with its fair share of discomfort. They don’t call them growing pains for nothing.

Even when things get tough, approach change as a learning opportunity. Allow yourself to discover. Challenge your assumptions.

Embracing change requires that you keep an open mind.

Stay in the mode of taking in all that new information. If you hold on too much to what you know, you’ll stay stuck. When willing to discover as you grow and experiment, eventually you will find the right path.

5. Don’t give up – persist!

persistent tortoise

When we set goals for ourselves, we tend to have a lot more motivation in the beginning. But change isn’t linear. You may experience failures and missteps that make it difficult to stay driven throughout the transition process.

Plus, our most precious pursuits don’t happen overnight. It takes hard work and persistence to make those big dreams a reality. When results don’t happen as quickly as you would like, or when nothing goes right , don’t give up!

You can’t rush the transition period. Remember, it’s normal to feel frustrated, to doubt yourself, and to face resistance in the neutral zone.

Be patient with yourself. Keep trying, keep moving, keep going. You’ll reach your goals eventually.

6. Pay attention to your thoughts

Have you ever noticed that when you find a car you really, really like, that you start to see that exact make and model all over the place?

It’s on the freeway. You see it passing by when you’re at a stoplight. You don’t realize how many there are on the road until you decide you like it.

That’s your RAS, or Reticular Affirmation System. It’s working all the time, even without you realizing it. Its main job is to mediate behavior. It notices things for you that you are interested in.

So what does your RAS have to do with embracing change?

The reason I study neuroscience , and use it in my practice, is because it gives my clients an edge. Like a biohack, you can use neuroscience to empower yourself and embrace change. It will help you get to the next level more effectively, efficiently, and scientifically.

It takes time to make a change. If we’re going to do it successfully, we have to do less of old patterns and more of the habits we’re trying to work toward. That all begins with our thoughts.

As we shift our neurochemistry and thought patterns, then we can begin to shift our behaviors.

Let’s say, for example, you notice that self-criticism is holding you back from taking steps towards your new beginning. To change this, you have to first notice when it’s happening.

In this video , I walk you through a great exercise to support the vital changes you want to make, by activating your RAS.

Carry around a notebook, or use a note-taking app on your phone. Every time you notice you being critical of yourself, jot it down. Continue with this for three to seven days.

You will raise your awareness about how critical you are, what situations trigger self-criticism, and some of the common thoughts you have when judging yourself.

Then the following week, each time you take a note of yourself being critical, write a love note to yourself. Make a positive affirmation. Reframe and redirect those thoughts into something positive and useful. Shift the pattern.

Increasing awareness of your thoughts and emotions is also how to tap into your intuition to find the best path forward.

Don’t let the change break you. Let it make you.

Making big changes isn’t easy. But learning to navigate the process is something anyone can do with time, patience, and support. Embracing change is an important life skill that can bring growth and help you build a life of purpose and fulfillment.

It can even help you figure out how to reinvent yourself completely.

But you don’t have to do it alone. If you need some guidance along the way, I’d be honored to help.

Our Reinvention Rx program is a great place to start.

How to embrace change: a mindset shift for personal growth and fulfilment.

Change is an ever-present part of life that takes many forms. It can range from small transitions like learning a new skill to significant life events such as starting a family, switching careers, or moving to a new home. While change is unavoidable, our experience varies greatly depending on how we relate.

By learning to embrace change, we turn an intimidating foe into an ally for growth. This essay will explore strategies for embracing change to live fuller, more dynamic lives.

First, we must clearly define what is meant by change. Put adaptation refers to making the status quo different. It is any shift in life circumstances, environments, or within oneself.

Change disrupts the predictable and thrusts us into unknown territory. Our fundamental nature seeks security, so change often provokes discomfort and resistance. However, change also presents new possibilities. Without it, life becomes stagnant.

Second, change is unavoidable. From birth through death, our lives are in flux. Each day brings new developments. As Heraclitus said, “The only constant in life is change.”

We cannot escape change but only choose how to respond. Embracing change means actively engaging with this reality rather than fighting the inevitable.

Third, learning to embrace change is essential for growth and fulfillment. It allows us to evolve mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Through life’s transitions, we gain wisdom, resilience, and perspective that enrich our self-identity. Embracing change is what propels us forward.

This article (How to Embrace Change) will explore practical strategies for embracing change in various life domains. Key topics will include transforming perspective, learning from change, building support systems, leveraging strengths, and maintaining flexibility.

By implementing these approaches, change becomes an opportunity rather than an obstacle. The following sections will provide actionable ways to thrive through life’s inevitable transitions.

The Benefits of Embracing Change

Embracing change offers individuals and organizations a myriad of benefits, ranging from personal growth and adaptability to enhanced innovation and problem-solving skills , creating a transformative landscape of opportunities and development. Let’s read some of them in detail:

Personal Growth and Development

Embracing change leads to immense personal growth and development. By leaning into change, we continuously expand our skills, abilities, and perspectives. Change pushes us outside our comfort zones and deepens wisdom through firsthand experience.

For example, starting a new career in an unfamiliar industry forces learning new technology, adapting communication styles, and expanding networks.

This builds tangible competencies while growing intangible qualities like confidence, empathy, and strategic thinking . Significant life changes are catalysts that spark rapid maturation and self-discovery.

Even incremental changes like learning a new hobby build neural pathways, flexibility, and a growth mindset to apply elsewhere. By embracing change’s call to growth, we evolve consciously rather than stagnate in complacency.

Adaptability and Resilience

Embracing change also increases resilience and adaptability. Resilience is the ability to recover from setbacks and flexibly respond when plans fall apart. Change provides opportunities to cultivate resilience before high-stakes situations.

Through small challenges, we build determination, optimism, and the capacity to handle obstacles. For example, persevering through a problematic fitness program strengthens mental grit to push through other changes.

Adaptability – adjusting to new conditions – is also honed through transition. We learn how to accommodate different personalities, work dynamics, and environments.

Becoming comfortable with the unfamiliar makes us more versatile overall. Together, resilience and adaptability are invaluable assets that allow us to navigate life’s inevitable ups and downs.

Innovation and Creativity

Innovation and creativity thrive when we embrace change. The openness required to welcome change fosters original thinking and solutions. Without change, minds stay closed in established patterns.

But when we appreciate differences, our mental frameworks stretch, and resources are freed up for novel ideas.

Change diversifies perspectives, bringing more vantage points. It also catalyzes resourcefulness — necessity forces creative problem-solving. Many great inventions and art emerged from instability because uncertainty wakes the imagination. By learning to ride change’s waves, we tap into the source of human innovation.

Improved Problem-Solving Skills

Finally, embracing change hones critical problem-solving skills. Change presents puzzles to decipher and challenges to navigate. With an open, curious mindset, these become opportunities to cultivate problem-solving. We learn to gather information, analyze systems, weigh trade-offs, troubleshoot barriers, synthesize solutions, and tolerate ambiguity.

While typically seen as a threat, change is a safe space to build skills, like a mental playground. Developing sound problem-solving prepares us to handle dilemmas in work, relationships, and achieving goals. Change provides endless opportunities for this growth.

How to Embrace Change and Thrive

Change is inevitable. Whether in our personal lives or at work, change is constantly happening. For many people, change can be challenging to deal with. It can create uncertainty, stress , and discomfort. However, change also provides growth opportunities.

By learning to embrace change, you can turn it into a positive force. In this article, I’ll walk you through strategies to help you not just cope with change but genuinely embrace it.

Overcome Resistance and Fear

The first step is acknowledging that change can provoke resistance and fear. It’s completely natural to want to cling to the familiar. Dramatic change can feel threatening. Even positive changes can be challenging at the moment. Recognizing these instincts is essential.

Remember, you always have a choice in how you respond. You can let resistance prevent growth or see it as a signal to move forward mindfully. Start by identifying what precisely you find threatening about the change. Then, focus on the potential benefits. There are always opportunities, even if they need to be clarified.

Adjust Your Mindset

How you think about change heavily influences how you experience it. Adjusting your mindset takes awareness but can make a huge difference.

Adopt a Growth Mindset

Psychologist Carol Dweck describes two core mindsets – fixed and growth. With a fixed mindset , you see your abilities and intelligence as set. You may resist change to protect how you see yourself. With a growth mindset , you see yourself capable of continual improvement. You’re more open to challenge and change.

Catch yourself when you have fixed mindset thoughts like “I could never do this.” Instead, tell yourself, “I’m excited to learn how.” This slight mindset shift primes you to grow.

Focus on Possibilities

When change happens, it’s easy to fixate on what’s lost rather than the possibilities ahead. Intentionally shift your focus. What new opportunities does this change allow for? What strengths can you build through this transition?

See Change as Temporary

Significant changes can feel like permanent upheaval. Remind yourself that heightened emotions and discomfort are temporary. You need time to process and adapt. This mindset reduces stress and enables more transparent decision-making.

Make an Active Decision

Rather than just reacting, make an active decision about how you will relate to the change. Consider if you will accept, avoid, or challenge the difference.

Acceptance doesn’t mean you necessarily agree or won’t feel complex emotions. It means acknowledging the reality so you can move forward.

Avoidance can be helpful to give yourself space temporarily, but long-term blocks growth.

Challenging The change may be an option sometimes, but assess whether it ultimately serves you.

Once you’ve consciously made a decision, you can stop passively resisting. Active intention reduces inner turmoil.

Get Curious

Curiosity is an antidote to fear. When you feel resistance or uncertainty, get curious. Avoid ruminating on worst-case scenarios.

  • What might I gain through this change?
  • How could this change be meaningful if I embraced it?
  • What strengths or abilities might I develop?

Ask questions instead of making declarations. Curiosity opens new possibilities. It’s okay not to have all the answers yet. You have time to navigate thoughtfully.

Progress in Small Steps

Significant changes are digestible when broken into small steps. Feel overwhelmed? Break it down.

  • What’s one small step you could take today?
  • What resources or support could help with this specific piece?
  • What part of this change is most within your control?

Small concrete progress gives a sense of capability to build on. Be patient with yourself. Small steps in a good direction add up.

embrace change and growth - How to Embrace Change

Explore Options Creatively

Uncertainty allows creativity to flourish. When things are open or unresolved, it’s a chance to explore options. Avoid locking in on one approach too quickly.

  • What are multiple ways you could respond to or move through this change?
  • What would you suggest to a friend in this situation? Look at it from the outside.
  • What would a fun or creative solution be, even if it seems impractical? Allow yourself to brainstorm widely.

Applying creativity reduces rigidity. More possibilities emerge when you allow yourself to think broadly.

Identify Lessons and Gifts

Every change holds lessons and gifts if you’re willing to look for them. Reflect on how this change benefits you, even in ways not immediately apparent.

Does it prompt you to:

  • Gain knowledge or skills?
  • Clarify priorities and values.
  • See things more clearly?
  • Deepen relationships?
  • Improve habits?
  • Discover hidden abilities or courage?

Consciously acknowledging lessons and gifts makes the change more meaningful.

Release Control

The unknown can be scary. We want to control outcomes for security. However, manipulating circumstances blocks growth. Practice:

  • Releasing the need for certainty
  • Tolerating discomfort
  • Allowing events to unfold naturally without jumping into control

This builds trust in yourself to handle what arises. You don’t need tight control. You have the strength to navigate uncertainty.

Support Your Well-being

Tending to your well-being helps you manage change gracefully. Prioritize:

Rest and recovery – Get enough sleep. Schedule downtime. Balance activity with renewal. When stressed, rest is protective.

Healthy nutrition – Eat grounding, nourishing foods. Reduce caffeine, sugar, and alcohol that deplete you. Hydrate and support your body.

Movement – Exercise, stretch, walk, dance. Moving your body releases tension and elevates mood.

Time in nature – Spend time outdoors, away from screens and people. Nature has direct healing impacts.

Stress management – Try meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or mindfulness. Find ways to relieve stress each day actively.

When you support your well-being, you have the energy to navigate challenges. Pay attention to your core needs.

Connect with Community

You don’t need to face change alone. Support others going through similar changes. Share ideas and strategies. Even just listening helps normalize your experience.

Or connect with someone further along. They understand and can point out unseen progress. Look for mentorship to guide you. Supporting others also boosts your strength. Change links us to shared humanity.

Engage Your Values

Significant changes can lead to questioning your self-identity. Reaffirm what matters most to you.

  • What personal values anchor you through this transition?
  • How will embracing this change allow you to live your values?
  • What parts of your identity remain untouched?

Connect with your integrity. Let values guide decisions and strengthen resilience. You remain you amidst any external shifts.

Envision Possibilities

When the path forward seems hazy, envision desired possibilities. Imagine how you would like things to turn out.

  • What are you working toward through this change process?
  • What is the vision that will motivate you on difficult days?
  • How can embracing this change help achieve a future goal?

Hold this vision gently. Progress towards what you wish without attachment to specifics. Your intentions plant seeds from opportunities that can sprout from.

Appreciate Your Strengths

Recognize the resources you have to work with. You likely need to pay more attention to your capacity. Consider:

  • Past changes you have worked through successfully
  • Skills or traits that will serve you well now
  • People and support you can rely on

You are more capable than you know. Have faith in yourself. You’ll grow in ways not possible without this change process. Trust your inner resources.

Find Your Courage

Courage comes in many forms. Every small brave act builds your reserves. Start by identifying where you feel most unsure. Then consider:

  • What would be one tiny brave step towards growth without too much discomfort?
  • How can you gently encourage yourself to shift out of your comfort zone?
  • What supports or people could help scaffold you?

Courage is like a muscle. With small acts of courage, you build confidence to respond bravely to life’s changes.

Allow Time to Integrate

Be gentle with timelines. Allow things to integrate and unfold gradually. Change takes time to absorb. Have realistic expectations for processing.

  • Imagine you had a friend going through this change; what advice might you offer? Likely, you would remind them to be patient with themselves!
  • Notice judgments about “not being far enough along.” Self-acceptance is key.
  • Release attachment to an ideal schedule. Progress ebbs and flows. Much happens beneath the surface, even when we feel stuck.

You may feel more peaceful about the change later. But with time, you build the capacity to integrate it into your life.

Transform Perspective

Look at the situation from new angles. Ask:

  • How would my best self respond to this change? Act as if you were your ideal self.
  • If I pretended I was excited about this change, how might I behave?
  • How is this an experiment or adventure rather than a threat?

Any experience is workable, depending on your perspective. Be open to shifting your vantage point. This flexibility and curiosity will serve you well.

how to embrace change meaning

Use Change as a Catalyst

Rather than just reacting, use change as a catalyst for intentional growth and reflection. Ask yourself:

  • What old habits or limiting beliefs does this change allow me to release?
  • How can I rearrange my priorities and time to align with what matters most?
  • What parts of my life no longer serve me that this transition allows me to let go of?

Be proactive. Channel the momentum of change toward your development. Significant life changes can clarify what is essential. Use this clarity to fuel positive personal shifts.

Reframe the Narrative

The story you tell yourself about change shapes your experience. Notice how you describe the transition to yourself:

  • Does the narrative emphasize struggle and loss or possibility?
  • Are you the victim of circumstance or an active hero of your journey?
  • Is this a problem to be solved or a mystery to explore?

Reframe the narrative when needed. Write a new story that empowers. Find the gifts in each step. You are the author who decides the tone.

Acknowledge Grief

The significant change involves loss. Give space for grief – for aspects of your life or endings. Feelings like anger, sadness, or disappointment are normal. Acknowledge failures openly rather than minimize them.

Process these feelings. Talk to supportive people. Express yourself through writing or creativity. Rituals and ceremonies can provide closure. While allowing grief, keep the perspective that this is just one chapter in your ongoing story.

Respond With Flexibility

You will likely vacillate through many emotional states during change. Expect ups and downs, steps forward and back. Meet each moment flexibly.

Your mood will shift. Thoughts will change. New events will occur. Respond to each moment as a fresh opportunity. Embrace the impermanence. Allow whatever arises with equanimity and compassion for yourself.

Flexibility allows you to pivot as needed without attachment to any one view. Each moment brings new potential.

Access Inner Wisdom

Listen to your inner voice for guidance during change. Intuition offers unique wisdom. Make space for reflection through:

  • Quiet contemplation
  • Mindful walks
  • Time in nature
  • Silent meditation
  • Artistic expression

What messages bubble up when you pause external noise? What new perspectives or insights emerge when you listen within? Seek balance between inner and outer guidance.

Remain Hopeful

When change gets difficult, hope uplifts. Reach for inspiration by:

  • Recalling past examples of how things worked out, even when you couldn’t initially see how.
  • Looking for everyday signs you’re headed in a positive direction.
  • Affirming that you have the strength and support to navigate this.
  • Connecting with faith in your resilience.
  • Imagining how you may feel when you look back with pride.

Hope fuels motivation when energy is low. You’ve made it through before. You will again. Believe in your capacity.

Real-Life Examples of Embracing Change

There are many inspirational cases of individuals and organizations who have successfully embraced change. Jim Harris was a successful corporate executive who experienced a massive heart attack in his 30s.

This health crisis prompted significant lifestyle changes, including shifting to a plant-based diet, meditating regularly, and dedicating his career to environmental activism. By viewing the heart attack as a catalyst for positive change, Harris transformed his health, personal life, and career trajectory.

On an organizational level, Netflix exemplifies embracing change and innovation. As technology and consumer preferences quickly evolved, Netflix transitioned from mailing DVD rentals to pioneering online video streaming.

This required significant changes to its business model and infrastructure. By proactively embracing new technology instead of resisting change, Netflix could ride the digital wave rather than becoming obsolete.

The United States military has also integrated mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and positive psychology to improve soldiers’ resilience, mental health, and adaptability to challenging conditions. By creating a culture that embraces change as an opportunity for growth, the military equips people to thrive through adversity.

Lessons Learned

These cases illustrate that by embracing change skillfully, we can catalyze profound personal and organizational evolution. Key lessons include: Being open to change rather than resistance. Looking for opportunities in disruption. Using change as a driver for growth. Creating cultures that are flexible and forward-thinking.

Individuals and organizations that learn to see change as a teacher and ally are best positioned to gain from life’s shifts rather than being overcome by them. We have a choice – allow change to happen to us or consciously harness its transformational power.

Conclusion – How to Embrace Change

Approach change with the expectation of growth. Believe that with time and intention:

  • You will become more skilled, wiser, and more robust.
  • Your sense of self and purpose will expand.
  • Doors will open that you couldn’t have imagined.
  • You will be grateful for the journey.

Know deep down that significant changes challenge us for a good reason. Trust in your ability to learn and grow. If you remain open, change leads to blossoming.

The path of personal growth and change is never complete. There will always be challenges to face. By bringing courage, flexibility, and heartfulness, you can harness the transformational power of change.

Be patient and gentle with yourself, but keep moving. With an open mindset, change becomes your friend that guides you to new levels of possibility.

Why is change so difficult for most people?

Change is problematic because it represents uncertainty, and our brains are wired to prefer predictability and security. Change disrupts our habits, expectations, and identities. It requires cognitive flexibility and adaptability, which can feel uncomfortable.

What are some common reactions or emotions people experience when faced with change?

Common reactions include shock, denial, anger, bargaining, anxiety, sadness, resistance, immobilization, demotivation, frustration, and fear. Only some people respond to change initially with excitement or enthusiasm.

How can I overcome resistance to change and learn to embrace it?

Strategies include adjusting your mindset to be growth-oriented, breaking change into small steps, self-care during transitions, reframing the narrative about change, leaning into curiosity over fear, seeking support, and intentionally building resilience skills.

Why should I embrace change – can’t I stay comfortable?

While comfort has appeal, resisting change leads to stagnation and prevents personal growth. Embracing change is essential for developing new skills, perspectives, and capabilities. Change brings opportunities that enhance our lives.

Essays About Change: Top 5 Examples and 10 Prompts

If you are writing essays about change, see below our best essay examples and writing prompts to help expand your horizon on this topic.

The only thing constant is change. It could be good or bad. It could be short-term or have a lasting impact. The best we can do is to ride on this inevitable and never-ending cycle of change and try coming out of it still standing, thriving, and smiling. This ability to cope with change is called resilience.

However, some changes – such as the loss of a loved one or a livelihood — are too overwhelming to deal with that some fall into trauma and depression, in which case psychological support is highly encouraged. Read on to see our round-up of rich, well-written essays about change, and a list of helpful prompts follows to help you start your essay.

“If you can learn to cope with change, you’ll lower your risk for anxiety and depression. Your relationships will flourish, and your body will feel healthier. But if you can’t cope with change, only a minor amount of stress can make you feel overwhelmed by life. You might also struggle to set and meet the goals you have for yourself.”

Instead of fixating on events and people over which we do not have the power to control, we should focus on ourselves and how we can embrace change without fear. Some tips in this essay include practicing self-care, being in the present, and focusing on your priorities, such as health and well-being.

“Ultimately, society may be confronted with a choice. We can punish offenders more severely and risk changing them for the worse, or we can design sentencing rules and prisons in a way that helps offenders rehabilitate and change for the better.”

In an environment where you are forced to follow the rules to the letter and worry about your safety and privacy daily, prisoners could develop a kind of “perpetual paranoia” or “emotional numbing” and deteriorate cognitive abilities. The essay suggests a rethink in how we deal with law-breakers to encourage reform rather than punish and risk repeat offenses.

Change often triggers a sense of unease—be it a new job, a relationship shift, or a relocation. It's natural; humans are creatures of habit, finding comfort in routine. Yet, change is inevitable, an integral part of life. Despite the discomfort it brings, it holds a hidden power: Embracing change unlocks creativity . So, let's welcome it warmly. Whether it's a career move, a breakup, or a shift to a new city, change offers a chance for growth. It's an adventure waiting to be explored. Embrace it, for within change lies the opportunity to unleash our inner creativity.

Understanding the Dynamics of Change: Unlocking Your Potential

Unveiling the intricacies of change is paramount to unlocking one's genuine potential. Within the depths of our minds lies a captivating revelation: Our brains naturally gravitate toward the familiar, seeking efficient shortcuts for navigating the world. However, consider this: Our cognitive shortcuts, deeply ingrained, can stifle personal growth and constrain opportunities.

Visualize this scenario: Deep within our minds, our brains are hardwired to safeguard fundamental needs such as safety, freedom, the status quo, belonging, and fairness. When confronted with challenges that jeopardize these needs, our instincts come into play, instigating resistance. This instinctual response involves the amygdala, triggering neurotransmitters like epinephrine and cortisol, priming us for fight-or-flight reactions. Fear and anxiety serve as catalysts for the amygdala and the sympathetic system, impeding clear thinking by suppressing the prefrontal cortex (Mathew et al., 1982). Understanding that our perception of fearful situations can be altered allows us to effectively regulate the amygdala response. Moreover, dopamine and serotonin exert influence over our emotional reactions to change, elucidating the innate resistance in various circumstances. By mastering the art of reshaping our perception of fearful situations, we gain the capacity to skillfully modulate our amygdala response.

Furthermore, the influence of dopamine and serotonin on our emotional responses to change reveals why resistance naturally arises in various situations. This neurochemical basis provides insight into how our brain strives to safeguard our fundamental needs. These play roles in shaping emotional responses to change. Understanding this neurochemical basis helps explain why resistance naturally arises in various situations (Krabble et al., 2017).

To embrace new experiences and navigate the ever-evolving world, we must defy our own internal resistance. Tap into the power of your prefrontal cortex, the epicenter of executive functions , reasoning, and planning. Activate this vital part of your brain, breaking free from the shackles of familiar thinking.

Though it may require effort, pushing beyond the boundaries of your comfort zone is where the magic happens. Embrace the process of experiential learning to reshape your thoughts, leading to transformed behaviors. As you embark on this journey, remember that your brain possesses astonishing neuroplasticity, allowing it to rewire and adapt.

What Are Our Options?

We can let fear take over or we can choose the other way and learn to roll with the punches. We can embrace change, turn it into something positive, and take control of our own path.

Sure, it's comfy sitting in our little bubble where everything feels safe and predictable. But let's be real; life loves throwing curveballs. Unexpected twists and turns could be lurking just around the corner.

So, let's be prepared. Life won't give us a heads-up before shaking things up. We have to be resilient and, most importantly, have the right mindset to handle whatever comes our way.

Embrace the Power of Fearlessness to Unleash Progress and Innovation

Fear, an innate emotion governed by the primal amygdala in our ancient limbic system, often becomes a formidable obstacle to our journey toward progress and innovation. Interestingly, when fear dominates our neural pathways, our inclination toward exploration and risk-taking diminishes. It is in these moments of apprehension that we find ourselves clinging to the familiar, hindering true growth (Bocchio et al., 2016).

However, let us remind ourselves of the incredible importance of defying fear and embracing change. Rather than allowing fear to shackle our potential, let us see the unknown as an opportunity, a gateway to self-discovery and expanding our horizons.

Coaches known as neuroplasticians harness insights from neuroplasticity for transformative coaching . Our understanding of brain plasticity, refined through dedicated research in neuropathology, neuropsychopathology, and brain trauma , now extends benefits to areas like positive psychology and coaching. This synergy empowers neuroplasticians to make enduring impacts on lives.

These coaches seize opportunities with clients who value continuous learning, fueling curiosity and empowering them to conquer fears by tapping into their intrinsic motivation linked to the brain's dopamine reward system. Supporting clients through mindfulness meditation and regular exercise, coaches help manage stress , nurture inner peace, and reduce anxiety by stimulating the release of GABA, a natural inhibitory transmitter in the brain (Kalueff et al., 2007). These strategies unlock coaching's full potential.

Fascinating research highlights the connection between creativity and high functional connectivity in top-down versus bottom-up processes. High creativity also correlates significantly with gene mutations related to excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, modulated by the competition between glutamate and GABA systems.

In the wild jungle of progress and innovation, fear lurks like a mischievous monkey swinging from neuron to neuron. But fear not, brave adventurers! When we defy fear and embrace change, we turn into fearless explorers, ready to conquer uncharted territories. Instead of clinging to the familiar like a koala to its eucalyptus tree, let's see the unknown as a thrilling roller coaster ride of self-discovery.

As neuroplasticians, coaches, and educators, you have the superpower to ignite curiosity in your clients, turning them into daredevils on the journey of learning. Tap into their brain's dopamine reward system, not like a magician, but as a practitioner of deep self-introspection, with skills from neuroplasticity to unleash their innate motivation.

Remember, mindfulness meditation and regular exercise are some of the key secret potions to banish stress dragons and bring inner peace to the realm of neurons. Embrace these and you'll unlock the vault of potential! Keep fear at bay and let happiness reign supreme on this adventure of progress, love, and laughs.

Change Is Hard. Here’s How to Make It Less Painful.

  • Erika Andersen

essay on embracing change

Four strategies to help you shift your mindset.

When an organizational change is first proposed, most people immediately want to know three things: what does this change mean to me, why is it happening, and what will it look like when the change has been made? People only begin to be open to accepting, embracing, and making this change when their mindset starts to shift from “this change is going to be difficult, costly, and weird” to “this change could be easy, rewarding, and normal.” The author offers four straightforward approaches for leaders to support their people through this necessary mindset shift, resulting in a critical mass of people who will understand, accept, and adopt the change reasonably quickly.

Every leader has had the experience of unveiling an organizational change — a new system or process, a corporate restructure, a shift in the business model — and getting a less-than positive response from their team. Sometimes the reaction is subtle: lowered eyes, tightened lips, silence. With a more confident or vocal team, you might get questions about whether the change is necessary, complaints about “yet another thing to do,” and lots of reasons why this just isn’t a good time for a big shift.

Academic curiosity and intellectual fervor, social impact and community engagement, adaptability and resilience.

I am reminded of the famous quote by Charles Darwin, "It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive, but those who can best manage change." These words underline the essence of my growth and development during my time in college. UCLA's reputation as a dynamic and diverse university makes it an ideal institution to further nurture my abilities to adapt, learn, and thrive. 'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

From a young age, I have been captivated by the world of academia. My thirst for knowledge and desire to explore new realms of learning have been the driving forces behind my academic pursuits. My fervor for learning has led me to take on various intellectually stimulating challenges throughout my high school years. I have consistently sought opportunities to expand my academic horizons beyond the confines of a typical classroom, engaging in research projects, attending academic conferences, and participating in online courses.

In my quest to satiate my curiosity, I have developed a multidisciplinary approach to my studies. By drawing from different disciplines, I have gained a broader perspective on complex issues and enhanced my critical thinking abilities. UCLA's prestigious academic programs, ranging from social sciences to STEM fields, would provide me with the ideal platform to pursue my interdisciplinary interests and foster my intellectual growth.

Beyond the realm of academics, I firmly believe that education must extend beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Recognizing the immense power of education to drive social change, I have sought every opportunity to engage with my community and make a positive impact. Throughout my high school years, I actively volunteered with various non-profit organizations, working with underprivileged students to enhance their access to quality education.

Furthermore, I founded and led a student-led initiative called "Education Empowers," which aimed to bridge the educational gap in low-income communities. Through this initiative, I organized tutoring programs, donation drives, and workshops, empowering students to realize their full potential regardless of their socio-economic background. By attending UCLA, a university renowned for its commitment to civic engagement and community service, I am confident that I will be able to amplify the impact of my initiatives and collaborate with like-minded individuals to bring about tangible change.

One of the most profound lessons I have learned during my time as a college student is the art of adaptation. College life, with its diverse challenges and constant changes, demands a high level of adaptability, mental resilience, and perseverance. During my transition to college, I experienced a significant culture shock and had to navigate the complex web of new relationships, academic expectations, and personal growth.

However, I embraced these challenges wholeheartedly and transformed them into opportunities for personal development. I actively sought out diverse perspectives, engaged in cross-cultural dialogue, and participated in multicultural clubs and events on campus. These experiences have not only broadened my horizons but have also imbued me with the ability to empathize and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. I firmly believe that UCLA, with its vibrant multicultural campus, will serve as the perfect space for me to continue fostering my adaptability and resilience.

As I stand on the precipice of my college journey, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. My academic curiosity, passion for social impact, and unwavering ability to adapt have shaped me into the resilient and driven individual I am today. UCLA, with its commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and fostering a culture of diversity, provides the ideal environment for me to continue my personal and intellectual growth.

essay on embracing change

Embracing the change

Embracing Change Leadership Skills

A personal SWOT analysis sheds light on numerous crucial issues when evaluating my preparedness for organizational change. Knowing my own SWOT—strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats is essential for my role in the strategic planning team that is evaluating our life sciences organization’s upcoming purchase.

Flexibility is one of my strongest suits that helps me adjust to new situations. Having worked through several changes in the industry’s environment, I have honed my ability to adapt to new paradigms quickly. Because of my flexibility, I can easily accept new ideas and techniques, which helps me adjust to organizational changes.

I am also well-prepared for change because of my strong communication abilities. During times of change, teams must communicate clearly and concisely so that everyone can understand and work together (Emon, 2023). One way to reduce pushback from staff is to explain why the change is necessary, answer their questions, and be completely transparent.

My predisposition toward perfectionism is one of my shortcomings that could hinder my response to change. Pursuing greatness is admirable, but going overboard can slow down decision-making and make changes more complex than they need to be. Embracing the expected rapid changes during the acquisition process will require overcoming this predisposition.

Being uneasy with uncertainty is another one of my weaknesses. Due to my need for order and precision, I may need help dealing with the ambiguity of transitions. To successfully navigate the impending change, developing abilities to flourish in uncertain environments is essential.

The continuous transformation allows me to play to my strengths by developing my leadership abilities. Being a leader during times of transition necessitates not only flexibility but also the capacity to motivate and steer people through unknowns. Participating in leadership development programs or seeking mentorships will allow me to hone my communication and adaptation abilities to become a change leader.

In addition, working on varied teams during this change will provide me with an excellent opportunity to learn new things and improve at solving problems. I may draw on my flexibility to appreciate different points of view by collaborating with coworkers from various backgrounds, who can provide new perspectives and creative solutions.

EnThe opposition of entrenchedrganizational cucultures a major concern. Firmly-held views and conventions are a common cause of resistance. To lessen the impact of this danger, it is essential to promote an environment where people are willing to talk about change, show how the transformation will benefit them, and cultivate a culture of openness.

Miscommunication or insufficient information transmission, which could confuse personnel, is another possible concern. Developing strong communication strategies, maintaining transparency, and providing ongoing updates can help reduce the spread of disinformation and maximize comprehension throughout the change (Hakim & Agustiani, 2022).

My SWOT analysis shows that the firm is well-prepared to change. Managing and leading change initiatives is a strong suit of mine, and I bring torengths like adaptability and strong communication. to the table, even though there are certain shortcomings, they show where we may improve rather than obstacles that cannot be overcome. I will be even more prepared for the planned purchase if I take advantage of chances to hone my leadership and problem-solving abilities and employ tactics to lessen the impact of negative influences like opposition and misunderstanding.

Finally, I am ready to embrace and help lead any organizational shifts that may occur due to the purchase. My strengths serve as a firm basis, and I take proactive steps to overcome obstacles by acknowledging and working on my limitations. I am prepared to accept and successfully spearhead the organizational transformation in this circumstance by concentrating on capitalizing on possibilities while reducing risks.

essay on embracing change

Are you dreaming of joining the prestigious NYU Stern for your MBA? Well, you’re in for an exciting journey, and I’m here to guide you through a crucial part of your application – the essays. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

ESSAY 1: PROFESSIONAL ASPIRATIONS

Embarking on an MBA is a significant step in your career, and NYU Stern wants to hear all about your plans. So, what are your short-term career goals? This question may seem straightforward, but it’s your golden ticket to show the admissions committee why NYU Stern is the ideal launchpad for your dreams.

KEY ELEMENTS TO INCLUDE:

  • Specificity is Key: Be clear about your desired role and the industry you aim to enter post-MBA. Numbers and facts play a big role here. For instance, if you’re eyeing a role in management consulting, mention the kind of projects or sectors you want to delve into.
  • Link to Stern: Why NYU? Maybe it’s their top-ranked Finance program or their impressive network in the tech industry. Whatever it is, make it clear how Stern aligns with your goals.
  • Short and Sweet: With a 150-word limit, precision is your friend. Every word should drive home why you’re a perfect fit for Stern and why Stern is perfect for you.

EXPERT TIP:

Did you know that NYU Stern’s MBA program has a robust offering in areas like Fintech and Luxury & Retail? Tailoring your goals to these unique strengths can showcase your fit and research.

ESSAY 2: PERSONAL EXPRESSION (PICK SIX)

This one’s my personal favorite – the “Pick Six” essay. Think of it as a blank canvas to paint a vivid picture of who you are beyond your resume. You get to choose six images that represent your passions, life experiences, and dreams. But remember, it’s not just about the pictures; the captions are where you bring your story to life.

CRAFTING YOUR PICK SIX:

  • Diverse Imagery: Mix it up! Your images could range from a snapshot of a volunteering experience to a prized personal achievement. This is your chance to showcase the breadth of your personality.
  • Meaningful Captions: Each caption is a chance to give context to the image. What’s the story behind that picture of you crossing the marathon finish line? Use these snippets to give depth to your narrative.
  • Reflect Your Values: Are you passionate about sustainability or women’s leadership? Let your images reflect these values. Remember, authenticity is key.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT PICK SIX?

Let’s look at an example. Imagine you choose a photo of a bustling street market in Bangkok. A simple caption like, “Exploring global markets, understanding diverse consumer behaviors – a step towards my dream of a career in international marketing,” ties your personal experience to your professional aspirations.

ESSAY 3: BEHAVIORAL ESSAY – EMBRACING CHANGE

“Change: _____ it.” This intriguing prompt from NYU Stern’s MBA application is not just about your take on change; it’s a window into how you adapt, innovate, and lead in a dynamic world. Let’s decode it together!

UNPACKING THE PROMPT:

  • Personalizing ‘Change’: This is where you fill in the blank with a word that embodies your approach to change. Are you someone who ‘drives’ change or ’embraces’ it? Your choice of word is a powerful indicator of your mindset.
  • Illustrating with Examples: Use real-life instances to show how you’ve lived this mantra. Did you lead a project that required swift adaptation? Or perhaps you initiated a change that had a significant impact?
  • Word Limit Wisdom: With a 350-word limit, your narrative needs to be crisp and engaging. Focus on one or two compelling examples rather than trying to cover too much ground.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

NYU Stern values candidates who can thrive in an ever-changing global landscape. This essay is your chance to prove that you’re not just prepared for change – you’re ready to be a catalyst for it.

OPTIONAL ESSAY: PROVIDING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This section of the application might seem optional, but it’s a hidden gem for those who use it wisely. Here’s where you can address any part of your profile that needs more context – maybe a gap in your resume, a unique life circumstance, or additional insight into your academic record.

WHEN TO USE THE OPTIONAL ESSAY:

  • Clarifying Gaps: If there’s a gap in your employment or education, explain it. But remember, this isn’t about making excuses; it’s about providing clarity.
  • Academic Anomalies: Had a rough semester? Use this space to give context but also to show how you’ve grown from the experience.
  • Extra Achievements: Got something impressive that didn’t fit into other essays? This is your place to shine.

CRAFTING YOUR RESPONSE:

  • Be Direct: Get to the point quickly. The admissions committee appreciates brevity and directness.
  • Stay Positive: Focus on the lessons learned or skills gained, even from challenging experiences.
  • Word Limit: With a maximum of 250 words, every sentence must add value to your overall narrative.

WRITING TIPS AND BEST PRACTICES

Crafting an essay for an MBA application, especially for a prestigious institution like NYU Stern, isn’t just about answering questions. It’s about telling a story – your unique story. Here are some essential tips to make your essays stand out:

STRUCTURE AND CLARITY:

  • Opening Strong: Your first sentence sets the tone. Make it engaging and indicative of what’s to come.
  • Clear Structure: Organize your thoughts. Use headings or bullet points if necessary to enhance readability.
  • Conciseness is Key: Be succinct. Respect word limits and don’t wander off-topic.

America Should Embrace a Parliamentary Democracy

Capitol Building up close overcast at dusk

O ur nation faces the serious threat of electing Donald Trump for a second term despite his willingness, even enthusiasm, for gutting vital democratic norms . What appears to be a glitch in the U.S. electoral system is actually an inherent feature: it can produce a dictator.

Many voters regard our centuries-old system as fundamentally sound and wise. But this view is mistaken: Our two-party presidential scheme produced Donald Trump. And ending the risk of electing a dictator means giving up our right to vote for one.

The solution lies in embracing a system of parliamentary democracy that blunts the risk of an extremist taking power—one that leading political scientists consider the best means of doing democracy. The scheme, called mixed-member proportionality (MMP), is uniquely suited to ending the ongoing threat of dictatorship posed by our two-party presidential system. Under MMP, voters will give up voting directly for President and Vice President in exchange for genuine power to affect the direction of our government, all while diminishing the threat of an authoritarian gaining power.

In our two-party presidential system, the risk of an authoritarian like Trump gaining power always lay just beneath the surface. The very structure of our system invites it.

The ever-present danger of our system is an extremist representing a subset of voters gaining control over one party, then prevailing against the other in the general election. This renders two-party presidentialism ripe for dictatorial exploitation. Each side’s overwhelming demand for unity, including with constituencies embracing deeply problematic views, forces us into two competing camps. The threat to democracy becomes acute when these pressures become so intense that one party succumbs to the will of a leader bent on doing whatever it takes to gain and hold power. When a party leader, such as Trump, is singularly focused on power, voter suppression, hyper-partisan gerrymandering, obstructive legislative tactics, and manipulative confirmation practices risk being transformed from outlier strategies to playbook. Even fomenting a violent attempt at blocking the peaceful transfer of power, and demanding loyalists condone it, becomes just another Wednesday. Our system’s demand for unity is so strong that once each party settles on its presidential candidate, party elites see their job as serving even the most problematic standard bearer.

Both parties need not experience these power dynamics in the same way. The ultimate threat to democracy arises when an opportunistic leader takes control of one party while exploiting tensions beneath the surface on the other side. Trump’s nationalist campaign not only transformed the GOP; it has also stressed the fault lines between the centrist Democrats and that party’s progressive base.

Intuitively, voting directly for President and Vice President might seem to safeguard against a dictator. Voters can simply vote for the other candidate. Instead, our system disempowers voters by demanding that they choose the lesser of two evils every four years. Partisan extremism risks leading voters on each side to rally behind their candidate—no matter how problematic—viewing the other as an existential threat.

An irony of two-party presidentialism is that as the threat to democracy grows, voters feel increasingly disengaged and disempowered.

There is a genuine pathway forward: transform the U.S. into a thriving multiparty parliamentary democracy. The solution demands changing two features of how we do the business of democracy in the U.S. We must change how we elect the House of Representatives and how we choose and hold accountable the President. The centerpiece shifts the choice of President from voters to House party leaders. To appreciate why this alternative system is superior to ours, we must revisit some commonly held intuitions about our own electoral politics.

Successful democracies embrace two defining features missing in American democracy: proportional representation and coalition governance. These attributes of well-designed parliamentary systems dramatically lower the risk of an authoritarian taking power. Proportional representation means parties are seated in the legislature, typically the lower chamber, based on their relative percentages of votes. Coalition governance is a process by which party leaders, based on proportional representation, negotiate to form a governing majority and the party that leads the successful negotiation then heads the government.

Democracy is about ensuring voters have genuine input into what their choices are. Limiting our choices to two candidates, Joe Biden and Trump, despite a supermajority— 63% —of voters frustrated by our two parties and hoping for more options, doesn’t empower voters. Voters are empowered when the options before them meaningfully reflect their values. This explains why, as political scientist Arend Lijphart shows in his book  Patterns of Democracy: Government Forms and Performance , voters in coalition systems are happier. They turn out in higher numbers. Their governments are more responsive.

Voters in our system rightly wish for third parties, with candidates who truly align with their sincerely held beliefs and preferences. But to have viable third, fourth, or more parties, we must give those parties a genuine role in governance. That means the power to join a governing coalition in exchange for delivering policy commitments or favored appointments to their constituents. Unlike two-party presidentialism, multi-party coalitions give third parties that role. A comparison of systems in different democracies reveals that two seemingly opposite dynamics pose the same threat. Two-party presidentialism invites the risk of an authoritarian taking over one party, then taking control of the government. But in an electoral scheme with too many parties, the threat of an authoritarian seizing control also resides beneath the surface. With too many parties, one party led by a charismatic leader who represents a minority of the electorate can gain more seats than any other even if far short of a majority. This becomes the first step in rolling over other parties, one by one, in the quest for eventual control. This very danger, experienced in the Nazi regime, contributed to post-World War II Germany embracing MMP, which political scientists widely consider the best way to do democracy.

To thwart dictatorship, we must fight against the twin threats. We must achieve the political Goldilocks principle—not many parties, nor too few.

Political scientists recognize the solution and agree that MMP is the most well-functioning democratic scheme . MMP produces more parties, with a sweet spot between four and eight. It does so by blending two forms of electoral representation in the lower legislative chamber, for us the House of Representatives. In the U.S., each voter would cast two ballots, one by district, as we do now, and one by party. Winner-take-all district voting will still favor two parties. But the party votes would then be used to ensure that each state’s House delegation reflects party proportionality. The combination makes it exceedingly difficult for any single party to capture a majority of seats in the House.

The most vital step in the fight against dictatorship comes next. In descending order of representation, up to five party leaders negotiate until a majority coalition forms. With supporters no longer wasting votes, third parties helping form a coalition will demand policy concessions or favored appointments as their price, providing genuine value to their constituents. The party that succeeds in negotiating a majority coalition will have its predesignated slate assume the offices of President and Vice President.

This scheme will end the two-party presidential system—and the risk of dictatorship—and transform the U.S. into a thriving multi-party parliamentary system. Candidates can no longer succeed simply by denigrating the other side. They must demonstrate a willingness to govern with other parties, despite inevitable policy disagreements. Party leaders will no longer succumb to extremists for fear of fracturing their side and ceding power to the opposition. Instead, they’ll realize that success demands moderating stances to forge majority coalitions.

Two-party presidentialism disallows the moderating influence, and pressures, required for effective coalition governance. As the GOP shrinks in size, calls for unity increasingly mean acquiescing to Trump’s most outrageous demands. This includes embracing lies about 2020 election fraud and the events of January 6, 2021. For Democrats, growing fragmentation marked by an unpopular incumbent and divisions associated with his age, handling of the southern border, and navigating the Middle East, risk threatening Biden’s ability to maintain the coalition and turnout that propelled him into the White House in 2020.

However the 2024 election is resolved, no single election can permanently end the threat of dictatorship. Accomplishing that demands radical, yet achievable, reform.

Transforming our two-party presidential system into MMP requires amending the Constitution—one amendment to change how we elect members of the House, and two that change how we select and hold accountable the President. Amendments can be proposed by a two-thirds vote of each House of Congress or by a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of states. Proposed amendments must be ratified by three-fourths of the states. The process is difficult. But it’s mistaken to believe it can’t be achieved to avert an existential threat to our democracy.

When we hit the inflection point of inevitable constitutional change, parliamentary America will appeal to those whose support is vital to approval. First, sitting members of both Houses of Congress keep their jobs. Second, key politicians gain new powers. Members of the House gain the power to select the President through coalition bargaining. No longer beholden to the leaders of only two parties, politicians can embrace sincerely held views without fear of retribution. And state politicians gain a new pathway to Capitol Hill through proportionality and party lists.

A shift to parliamentary America will end our constitutional crisis. We must replace two-party presidentialism with a well-designed system of multiparty coalition governance. By giving up the way we’ve elected Presidents, voters will gain more power and greater influence. Their votes will express what they truly value and, most importantly, they will gain genuine power to ensure our democracy overcomes the threat of dictatorship.
