On the night of April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, one of hundreds operating in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded, killing eleven men, and placing one of the most rich and diverse coastal regions on earth in imminent danger of petroleum poisoning. BP had been drilling in waters a mile deep, and in the next two days, as the rig slowly sank, it tore a gash in the pipe leading to the oil well on the ocean floor. Over the next three months, two hundred million gallons of crude oil poured into the Gulf, before the technological means could be found to seal the undersea well. It was the worst environmental disaster in American history, and the largest peacetime oil spill ever.

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig on Fire

The BP oil disaster caused untold short- and long-term damage to the region. The initial impact on the Gulf—the oil washing up on beaches from Texas to Florida, and economic hardship caused by the closing down of Gulf fishing—was covered closely by the news media. The longer term impacts of the oil spill on wetlands erosion, and fish and wildlife populations, however, will not likely receive as much attention.

Much public debate over the spill has focused on the specific causes of the spill itself, and in apportioning responsibility. As with the example of bee colony collapse, however, the search for simple, definitive causes can be frustrating, because the breakdown is essentially systemic. Advanced industries such as crop pollination and oil extraction involve highly complex interactions among technological, governmental, economic, and natural resource systems. With that complexity comes vulnerability. The more complex a system, the more points at which its resiliency may be suddenly exposed. In the case of the Deepwater Horizon rig, multiple technological “safeguards” simply did not work, while poor and sometimes corrupt government oversight of the rig’s operation also amplified the vulnerability of the overall system—a case of governmental system failure making technological failure in industry more likely, with an environmental disaster as the result.

In hindsight, looking at all the weaknesses in the Gulf oil drilling system, the BP spill appears inevitable. But predicting the specific vulnerabilities within large, complex systems ahead of time can be next to impossible because of the quantity of variables at work. Oil extraction takes place within a culture of profit maximization and the normalization of risk, but in the end, the lesson of BP oil disaster is more than a cautionary tale of corporate recklessness and lax government oversight. The very fact that BP was drilling under such risky conditions—a mile underwater, in quest of oil another three miles under the ocean floor—is an expression of the global demand for oil, the world’s most valuable energy resource. To understand that demand, and the lengths to which the global energy industry will go to meet it, regardless of environmental risk, requires the longer view of our modern history as a fossil-fueled species.

The BP Oil Disaster of 2010 is presented as an example of complex human systems failure.

Discharge continued for 87 days until July 15, 2010, five years ago this week, when the well was capped and the leak was contained.

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative GoMRI , a large-scale, coordinated research endeavor, was created in response to the disaster to improve society’s ability to understand the impacts of the oil on the ecosystem, learn new ways to mitigate oil in the environment, and understand how to be better prepared should a similar event arise in the future. Here are 10 questions and answers they have prepared about the event and what has happened since.

1. Where did the oil go on the surface?

A large concern after the spill was where the oil on the surface would end up – would it wash into salt marshes or onto beaches? Or could it become entrained into the Florida Straits and the Gulf Stream and be sent up the East Coast? In order to better predict the path the oil took from the area of the spill, GPS-enabled drifters were deployed to float freely along Gulf currents (check out the link for a video of drifter paths).

This experiment enabled the discovery of a mid-size current within the Gulf that was previously unknown, and is believed to have been the current that caused the oil to move in unpredicted ways. In order to track and predict oil movement as it moved from outside the surf zone onto the beaches, researchers simultaneously deployed drifters, dye, and drones within one mile of the beach to ensure the same water conditions were monitored throughout.

Data from these experiments supplement existing circulation models providing a better understanding of surface currents and improving model accuracy.

2. Where did the oil go that didn’t make it to the surface?

At the time of the DWH spill, sub-surface current models in the Gulf of Mexico were limited both in the area that they were able to simulate and how they treated oil within the model. Through a series of Tracer Release Experiments, GoMRI researchers widened the scope of those models, examining where the oil traveled from the wellhead (vertically through the water column as well as horizontally) and how fast it moved. These models are now able to describe water movement from the scale of a few micrometers to the size of the entire Gulf. Additional models improve our understanding of oil plume formation, tracking, and prediction by taking into account key factors controlling deep plumes including oil droplet size, wellhead flow rate, currents, and high-pressure biodegradation. Increasing our modeling capability of oil movement provides an important tool to track oil exposure. For example, when reef fish caught in the West Florida Shelf were reported to have lesions, tracer models were employed to confirm that hydrocarbons were likely brought onto the shelf as a result of the strong upwelling during that time period.

3. What happened to the oil below the surface?

As the oil moved through the water column, it naturally interacted with living organisms. These physical interactions were examined using tanks in which oil, with and without dispersants, interacted with planktonic organisms, sediment, and inorganic particles. These simulations focused on examining the mechanisms that drove oil transport; for example, how interaction with these materials may influence whether oil rises to the surface or sinks to the seafloor.

Organisms within the water column also consumed oil, contributing to its degradation and removal from the environment. One study estimated that microbes consumed approximately 200,000 tons of hydrocarbons in the water column, close to 30% of the oil released.

4. Did any of the oil reach the seafloor?

Below the surface slicks and deep water plumes, approximately 3-5% of the oil from the spill was deposited onto the seafloor. The fate of the oil on the seafloor was examined through laboratory experiments simulating the high-pressure conditions of the seafloor. These experiments concluded that high pressure inhibited the growth and function of the oil degrading microbes, decreasing oil biodegradation. Researchers monitored sediment near the wellhead during and after the spill to understand the impact of oil deposition on the seafloor environment.

These efforts observed that three years after the spill, the sediment was still in an altered state due to a large influx of organic carbon and a subsequent decrease in oxygen concentrations.

5. Did any of the surface oil get into the air?

Oil droplets in the air are more like smoke particles than droplets, and just like smoke particles they can be carried by the wind and inhaled by oil spill recovery workers and wildlife. There are two main ways that oil can enter the atmosphere from the ocean – evaporation or aerosolization. Aerosolization occurs as bubbles burst in waves, white caps, sea spray, and mist.

Laboratory studies found that highly volatile oil compounds predominantly evaporate, but larger, less volatile compounds are more likely to enter the atmosphere through bubble bursting (aerosolization). This process is facilitated by dispersants as the size of oil droplets are decreased, making it easier for the oil to enter the atmosphere.

6. What is “marine snow?”

In the deep ocean, flakes gently fall through the water column to the seafloor, earning them the name “marine snow.” Unlike snow, these “flakes” are aggregates of various sizes made up of sediment and organic detritus – microbes, dead and living plankton, feces – that coalesced as the detritus fell. Consequently, marine snow is an important source of organic matter onto and in the seafloor environment in the deep ocean.

Observations and laboratory experiments after the oil spill found that the presence of oil droplets created larger than normal amounts of marine snow laden with hydrocarbons. Further laboratory experiments linked the increased marine snow formation with microbial activity surrounding the oil droplets and noted inhibition of snow formation by dispersants.

Researchers postulate that as marine snow is an effective mechanism to remove organic matter from the surface water, microbial-mediated marine snow may potentially be an effective mechanism to remove surface oil.

7. What was the impact of the dispersants?

The DWH oil spill marked the first time dispersants were used near the sea floor in deep-sea conditions - dispersants were applied at the wellhead 5,000 feet below the surface. After the spill, GoMRI researchers conducted experiments to determine the effectiveness of the use of dispersants at that depth and the impact of the dispersants on the surrounding ecosystem. Studies using modeling as well as laboratory simulations of the high pressure, low temperature conditions similar to the deep-sea Macondo wellhead indicate that dispersants may not have been necessary to reduce surface slicks.

Instead, they suggest that the amount of oil that reached the surface was potentially unaffected by deep-sea dispersant application. Once in the water column, the presence of dispersants increased the speed of microbial consumption of hydrocarbons. On the seafloor, dispersants were observed to remain bound in sediment and sand longer than expected. Further studies suggest that degradation rates in coastal sediments and sand may have been slowed as dispersants moved the oil faster and deeper into sand and sediments, an effect that could shield the hydrocarbons from degradation by microbes.

In light of the impacts of dispersants, work is being done to better identify and monitor the key components of traditional dispersants in seawater and to determine potential dispersant substitutes that could potentially be more effective and less harmful to the environment, including black carbon particles, food-grade emulsifiers, and clay particles.

8. What happened to oil on the beaches?

Oil that reached beaches took many forms, from clusters of tar balls to pools of mousse. Along the Alabama shoreline, scientists examined the persistence of weathered oil on the beaches, such as tar balls, through laboratory analysis. Results indicated that prior to reaching the coast, the oil weathered relatively quickly via evaporation and other open ocean weathering processes, but once trapped in sediment along the coast weathering processes slowed considerably. Studies using a novel analytical method were able to shed new light on the molecular changes of oil during the weathering processes, particularly oil in sand. Researchers have conducted detailed surveys of microbial groups from Louisiana and Alabama beaches and coastlines, making observations on the abilities of the microbes to degrade specific oil compounds.

9. What was the impact of oil on the salt marshes?

Since the oil spill, researchers have surveyed salt marshes for the presence and impact of hydrocarbons. Oil intrusion to marsh soil was observed to be confined within 15 meters of the seaward marsh edge and after three years was found to persist in the marsh at either the same or higher concentrations than initially observed. Based on these surveys, projections for recovery indicate that some hydrocarbons may remain in, and negatively impact, the sampled wetlands for decades.

Site recovery over the last five years has been dependent on erosion, as damaged vegetation in non-eroding areas achieved nearly full recovery after about 1.5 years. Researchers have observed that heavy oiling of marsh soil increases marsh instability and erosion, though aboveground vegetation may appear unchanged. Further studies related these changes to shifts in the bacterial diversity of marsh sediments due to the presence of the oil.

Laboratory studies indicate that the common marsh reed, Phragmites, was impacted by below ground oiling as it had a high tolerance to coverage of oil above ground, but below-ground oiling of the soil reduced reed growth and function.

As clean-up was attempted on less than 10% of the marshes, the recovery will rely on natural processes, such as microbial biodegradation. Early assessments of biological responses to the spill indicated the importance of coastal wetland monitoring, specifically monitoring key species within the marsh that provide critical ecosystem services and who are sensitive to environmental hazards, such as Seaside Sparrows and insects (e.g. ants and crickets).

10. How did the oil spill impact plants and animals in the Gulf?

From the sea surface to seafloor sediment, biota the size of microscopic plankton to large predatory sharks were surveyed by GOMRI researchers in order to identify populations at risk for future spills and downstream implications for those populations. The critical seaweed habitat, Sargassum, was observed to decrease after the spill. Further studiespoint to Sargassum sinking after exposure to dispersants as the cause of the observed decrease.

Zooplankton populations were observed to briefly increase after the spill, potentially due to the increased food source of oil degrading microbes or a decrease in predation. Populations returned to normal after a few months. Bioaccumulation of toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in crude oil-tolerant Jellyfish was examined through laboratory exposure experiments. This bioaccumulation provides a potential pathway for PAHs to enter the food chain and transfer up to large predators. Oil contamination in fish, such as Red Snapper, was manifested in the form of skin lesions. GOMRI scientists examined over 7,400 fish from 103 species near the area of the spill and down the Florida Gulf Coast and found that skin lesion frequency and severity coincided with the quantity of PAHs in their liver, muscles, and bile.

BP (British Petroleum) is a leading international energy company. It has pledged to cut oil and gas production by 40% by 2030, shifting its focus to be a force for the evolution of clean, renewable energy.

Careers at BP

BP offers a range of career options for those interested in the business, engineering, science, supply and trading sectors. It also offers a variety of graduate schemes within these areas, which provide an opportunity to work alongside key experts within the global energy industry.

Unsurprisingly, competition to work at this prominent global company is strong, meaning that as a potential candidate, you will need to seriously compete with thousands of others for a position.

Recruitment for careers at BP requires candidates to sit through a multi-stage recruitment process, which will involve various psychometric tests, a technical interview (which will require a role playing scenario between the candidate and interviewing panel), and a day at a BP assessment centre, where you will be given a mix of individual and team activities to complete.

BP Application Process

Online application form, online aptitude tests, video/phone interview, assessment centre.

For graduate and intern opportunities, any application to BP will start with matching your degree qualification to the disciplines, roles and opportunities that you are entitled to apply for at this stage in your career.

Each year, there are approximately 300 places available on different BP graduate schemes, with other professional positions appearing as the need arises at the company.

For recent graduates, there is also a specific 2–3 year ‘Challenge’ programme which will act as a gateway to more opportunities within BP. This is not specific to any particular field of specialism, so whatever your field of interest, you will be able to extract skills and experience from this programme.

BP online application form

BP currently operates across the board with its Core Values at its heart. These are:

This is the first part of the recruitment process, and is therefore also the first impression that you will be presenting to the recruiter. Therefore, it is important to remember the Core Values of BP, and to keep them at the forefront of your mind when you are answering the various questions on the application form.

This means that when referring to specific achievements, projects or job roles that you have been involved in, it is important to link them in some way to the Core Values.

A commonly used technique for communicating yourself to a recruiter in a positive way that is conducive to showing yourself in your best light is STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Further information on this technique can easily be found online.

BP Aptitude Tests

Once you have completed and submitted the online application form, you will be contacted by the recruiter to progress the rest of your application, depending on whether you have so far been successful in your submission.

The next stage of the process depends on your performance in BP’s own specialised aptitude tests. These may include a numerical reasoning test , a verbal reasoning test , and a logical reasoning test . The difficulty level of the tests will be reflected in the area of business, and the level of the role that you have applied for within the company.

There will be information and instructions about the aptitude tests on the invitation email sent from BP to you. These aptitude tests are carried out online and are provided by the Saville Consulting group .

BP verbal reasoning test

BP’s verbal reasoning test functions as a reasonable indicator of a candidate’s ability to make rapid sense of a previously unseen piece of text, and to extract the key information from it. As part of this test, your competence regarding word meanings and written comprehension will also be assessed.

The test centres on a paragraph of information that you will be given to understand and deduce the relevance from. Once you have read the passage of text, you will be asked a series of questions regarding it. You will be given the choice of answering ‘True’, ‘False’, and ‘Cannot Tell’ to these questions.

You will have roughly 45 seconds to answer the questions given, so make sure that when you are practicing that you do so under timed conditions to get used to answering accurately and rapidly.

BP numerical reasoning test

To be at your most adept and proficient during the numerical reasoning test assigned to you, it is paramount that you practice under the same timed conditions as the real test itself.

You will have less than a minute to answer each question; therefore the focus for this particular test is less on your actual numerical ability, and more on your speed of approach.

Although the test will be multiple choice, it is also advised that you do not try to randomly guess the answers in a show of rapidity, as it will show up on your accuracy score. However, it will be possible for you to make a best guess estimate by putting the answers that are clearly incorrect to one side.

The numeracy level required for this test is of a general standard, involving common calculations involving addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, percentages and fractions.

You will be allowed a calculator for the test, so remember to practice with this too.

BP diagrammatic reasoning test

BP’s diagrammatic reasoning test may also be referred to as a logical reasoning test, or an inductive test . This test will be different to the previous numerical and verbal reasoning tests in that you will not be required to make sense of data or text; this time it will be all about understanding abstract patterns.

During the test, the nature of how abstract these patterns and trends can be is unlimited; this task is designed to challenge you. The best way to prepare is to familiarise yourself with practicing.

Over time, it will feel more and more natural to be able to find patterns within size, arrangement, movement and colour of different shapes.

It is also strongly advised that you also practice under timed conditions, as your time during the tests will be limited.

bp case study questions and answers

I could prepare for specific companies and industries. It’s been an invaluable resource.

Video/phone interview

The penultimate step in the application process will be a phone or video interview. This is often considered the most daunting part of the process, as it can be difficult to establish a quick rapport with someone you can’t necessarily see.

During the course of the interview, you will be required to demonstrate key competencies and technical knowledge required for the role, with evidence-based examples.

The best way to prepare for this is to do a practice run with a friend or a family member (i.e. someone that you feel comfortable with). This way, you will feel more comfortable when it comes to the real thing.

It is also a good idea on a practical level to make sure that your phone or PC/laptop is fully charged, you have a strong internet/phone signal, and that you are in a quiet space where neither you nor the interviewer will be distracted by any outside noise or disturbance.

Complementary to your competency-based phone or video interview is a technical interview, which will involve role play. This role play exercise will assess your response to a typical business scenario, so it’s a good idea to research as much as you can on the company, and consider what different scenarios could come up during the course of the job role that you have applied for prior to this part of the application process.

Strong acting skills are definitely not a priority, so when you are practicing for the role play, direct your focus on thinking quickly and practically on your feet.

Assessment centre

Finally, visiting an assessment centre for a day of in-person individual and team exercises will need to be completed, depending on the role that you have applied for.

The following exercises may come up at your assessment day, so be prepared to face some, or all of these: a group exercise , a presentation exercise, and a reflective review.

Being part of a group exercise is a great opportunity to show your ability to work as a member of a team. It will be a problem-solving assignment, based on a fictional business scenario.

You will be working with other candidates attending the assessment centre . During the given time period, all candidates will be observed by representatives from BP.

The individual presentation involves a case study that you will be given to read and review. This case study will focus on the area of business that you are applying for, and will typically require a decision and an explanation of it.

You should also be prepared to confidently back your decision, as you may need to take questions on it.

Your presentation should last around 10–15 minutes, and will be a chance to demonstrate your ability to comprehend information given, as well as how confidently and clearly you can express yourself.

A reflective review is usually placed within the final part of the day, usually taking the form of a relaxed discussion with a BP representative about how the candidate felt about their individual performance over the course of the day at the centre.

Now that you know the basics of BP HireVue Video Interview , take a look at the following 5 BP Video Interview example questions and answers to get an idea of how you may form answers to BP Video Interview questions. Let’s put the above tips into practice.

Top 5 BP Video Interview Example Questions & Answers

Question 1: Do you consider yourself successful?

Tips to Answer: First things first, DO NOT say no, even if you don’t consider yourself successful at the moment. Bring out the positive approach in your answer. Explain to them what success means to you, i.e., how you define success. Your answer should show pride in what you have struggled to achieve so far and confidence to achieve and work for more.

Good Answer: I define success by the goals you set for yourself and how you surround yourself with people who respect and admire you. So, in some ways I’m both, I have struggled to achieve what I wanted and kept the people who became my inspiration, really close. I haven’t yet achieved everything; I still have some goals and aspirations which I would like to achieve. I have also had my fair share of failures. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that I am not completely successful, but I would not consider myself unsuccessful too.

Question 2: What are your weaknesses?

Tips to Answer: Do not include qualities like pleasing people, difficulty in saying no, etc., pick something that is actually true to you. Be honest when answering for weaknesses because your interviewers very well know that no one is perfect, and they want to know more about you as a person. Make sure to tell them something you struggle with at times but try to overcome by putting in effort. Tell them how you are trying to turn your weakness into an opportunity to get more skilled at your job.

Good Answer: Although I have always met deadlines, I do struggle with procrastination. Because of this, I work all day as the deadline approaches. I used to struggle a lot in my early days as XYZ. Therefore, I started taking project management and time management lectures, in order to learn to manage and organize tasks in a way that I do not get overburdened. And I’m glad to say that I’m getting the hang of this and I think I am successful at the attempt so far.

And, be sure to check out our further tips on how to answer this behavioural question below:

Question 3: What is your ideal work environment?

Tips to Answer: Try to tailor an answer that blends in well with BP’s values and vision. Do not focus your answers solely on the people you will be working with.

Good Answer: My ideal work environment is the one which is a blend of collaboration and innovation. I am an innovative person and I believe when we work in a collaborative environment, we put together all the great minds and there’s where we can find innovation. The best part about collaboration is that it leads to faster decision-making and diverse ways of problem-solving.

Question 4: What do you know about BP?

Tips to Answer: Focus on specific facts that you found out during your research about the BP. Show them how their mission and vision fascinates you. Talk about the major milestones and accomplishments of BP that moved you. Keep your answer basic yet reflecting your knowledge about BP.

Good Answer: I know that BP has been in work for more than 100 years now, and providing remarkable service since then. And I love BP for the fact that despite being such a successful organisation, it is working towards a safer planet by investing in low carbon energy to rapidly scale up in solar and offshore wind aiming to reduce emissions by 2030. I’m also delighted and eager to know more about the upcoming Tangguh Expansion project.

You can also gain further insight into this behavioural question with the video below:

Question 5: Tell us something that is not on your CV?

Tips to Answer: For this, you can either open with a joke, because in these situations, humour will probably go on the positive side of your candidacy. However, don’t risk it if you don’t believe the joke is appropriate. For this, consider the workplace culture of the company. You can tell them about any casual events or even tell them about a social cause that you feel deeply about and work in your idle time towards that cause. Tell them how far you have gone on that road and how far you would like to reach in the future.

Good Answer:  Anything that’s not on my resume can get me rejected straightaway (jokingly). Jokes apart, I do feel that the increasing deforestation will have an adverse effect on the planet in the long run, and for that I try to do the bare minimum that I can in my capacity. I run campaigns on vacations to spread awareness in different cities. I have also hosted a number of plantation drives in recent years. I know that these things aren’t enough to save our planet from grave danger, but I do feel that if I can bring change to even one in a thousand people, that’s a win-win.

The BP assessment centre will conclude with a series of interviews, which will depend on the role you’ve applied for. Continue reading as we go through these below.

The BP interviews in this final stage of the recruitment process will consist of a number of one-on-one interviews with directors or senior managers from the business area you wish to join. This stage typically consists of two types of interviews :

BP Technical Interview

BP Behavioural Interview

The BP Technical Interview aims at checking your technical knowledge, i.e., the knowledge you possess in your field. The interview will last for an hour. They will ask you basic concept related questions, or ask you to work some solutions in front of them.

BP Technical Interview Tip : The scope of your BP Technical Interview depends on the role you have applied for. For example: Finance applicants will be asked questions in that field. Similarly, if you have applied for a role in Data Technology, you will be asked the basic conceptual questions.

What kind of questions are there in a BP Technical Interview?

Here are some examples of the questions asked by employers at BP at a Technical Interview:

  • How comfortable are you with SAP? What is a BOL
  • How can you decide the age range of your target audience?
  • What is your experience with Data Engineering pipelines?

Two tips to ace the BP Technical Interview

  • Revise and Practice:

Make sure you brush up the basics of your job and practice. Revise the fundamentals of your field be it pipelines engineering, finance or HR. Pay special attention to how your field relates to the oil and gas industry . For example: if you’re applying for an engineering role, revise basic principles of fluids, mechanics and materials . Look for advancements that can be made in the oil extraction machinery, ships, etc . However, if you’re applying for a business role such as finance, find out cost cutting solutions in BP case studies. Read BP’s annual reports and see how you can put your business knowledge to make it better by applying basic business formulas.

Research about are the companies’ values , goals, and ongoing projects. Discover the key problems being faced and the upcoming tasks that BP has undertaken. Think of several possible solutions on how you will solve the problems being faced through your expertise.

The BP Behavioural Interview focuses on knowing you as a person and understanding how you would react to BP’s problems and solve them with your hard and soft skills.

You will be asked questions related to your past experiences at work, how would you behave in a certain situation, etc. Your BP interviewers will want to know your motivations and aspirations and try to know you more on the inside as to what kind of a person you are.

Examples of BP Behavioural Interview questions:

  • What have you done that made you proud?
  • Select one of the company values and describe how you relate to it with an example
  • Describe how you work in a team
  • How do you handle stress ?

It is important that you keep in mind the core competencies of the job position you have applied to and BP’s values when answering these questions. Let’s see a couple ways in which you can answer the above-mentioned questions.

How to answer the BP behavioural Interview questions:

Good Answer 1: The moment is yet to come in my life, the day I will be able to make it to the ABC position in a great company such as yours and make a real contribution, I will be the proudest.

Good Answer 2: “I worked at ABC company and once we had to pull all nighters to improve our shipping function, but me and my team really went on with it and covered the gaps that were creating the problems, and my team worked hard with me and we increased our efficiency to 35% which brought us back on the level. I’m proud to be able to motivate my team and see my organisation succeed as a whole”.

Explanation: Of course in this answer you can add more specifics, as to what was the shipping function that needed attention, what you did to improve it and what were the gaps you filled. This particular answer shows that you are a team-oriented person, and aligns with two of the company’s values, that are ‘One team’ and ‘respect’.

Good Answer: “Teamwork comes from motivation and motivation can be derived from small recognitions. Therefore, I make time to appreciate my team members for their work. I also try to communicate more so that I understand my teammates’ thought process. And thus, knowing and supporting each other with their strengths and weaknesses works a great deal in increasing efficiency. One more thing that I consider important is delegating the responsibilities, because that makes my team members feel responsible and important”.

Explanation: By demonstrating to your interviewer how you work as a team, you are basically showing what leadership skills you have. Because, only a leader knows the value of the team working together, and how to make sure that the team puts efforts in the workplace.
  • How do you handle stress?

Good Answer: “As a person who has spent the last five years in a xyz role, I understand that stress becomes an integral part when you are in any job. A little stress can behave like a catalyst in getting the work done at the earliest and the best. But, when the stress exceeds the limit I often try to use my organisational skills in order to prioritize the most important thing at that particular hour. I also try to meditate more in such situations to keep my head clear. Because it’s important to make decisions without any pressure in such cases”.

Explanation: Showcasing that you understand and can handle stress in the workplace demonstrates that you can be trusted with important tasks for the company while maintaining performance under pressure. Additionally, this shows that you are resilient and align with two of the company’s values in ‘Excellence’ and ‘Courage’.

At the end of interviews, you will be given a chance to ask questions. You must definitely use this opportunity! This is a way of showing that you are interested and motivated, so prepare some thought-provoking and interesting questions beforehand.

Some questions that you can ask your interviewer at BP are:

  • This question shows the employer that you are eager to fit into the organisation and bring in value with your skills.
  • This enables the employer to connect with you and shows that you’re up for any advice or heads up that they have to offer.
  • Shows the employer that you understand the role and the responsibilities associated with it, and that you are ready to face any challenges that the job has to offer but with a little help.

Crisis Management Case Study: Deepwater Horizon

Deepwater Horizon on Fire - 2010

April 5, 2022 By //  by  Bryan Strawser

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was truly a crisis. Unfortunately, it was also handled in one of the worse ways possible. When a crisis occurs, management and communication become some of the largest and most significant issues. In this particular case, BP failed in both of those areas. It’s important to look at how this occurred and why in order to have a better understanding of the event and its aftermath. Additionally, determining ways to avoid the issue in the future and better manage the next crisis is a valuable part of learning lessons from the Deepwater Horizon spill, so the risk of another spill and its resulting damage can be reduced. Here is everything you need to know about this event and the lack of proper crisis management from BP at the time it occurred.

A Summary of the Situation

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The resulting spill was deemed to be among history’s worst environmental disasters. In addition to the damage inflicted on the planet, eleven workers died in the explosion. Nearly five million barrels of crude oil entered the Gulf before the leak created by the explosion was stopped, and there have been suggestions that the local environment was irreparably harmed by the oil. While some of the oil was cleaned up or contained, much of it made its way into areas where cleaning wasn’t easy or where containment was not really an option. Due to the way oil spreads and the amount of it being released in the spill, collecting all of it and restoring the environment was not really possible.

Additionally, the oil-coated fish, birds, and other animals, and made it more difficult for businesses in communities along the Gulf Coast to survive due to the dip in tourism the spill created. But the problem wasn’t just in what actually happened. It was also in how BP handled the explosion, the leak in the Gulf that went on for far too long, and what the public was being told about the event and the efforts to clean it up. Through a series of missteps and poor choices, BP not only made the situation more complicated but also added to the damage that was being done. Before it was over, BP would be chastised by environmental groups and many others for the decisions made immediately after the explosion took place and in the days and weeks following it, while the leak continued.

BP Failed at Crisis Management

While the explosion, loss of life, and immediate impact of the spill were all devastating, it was what BP did after that which became the subject of discussion and frustration for a lot of people. There was a distinct lack of leadership right from the beginning, and gas stations around the country that carried the BP branding changed their names. They did not want the association with the company and were seeing their sales drop based on the way people felt about BP and the choices the company had made. The lacking leadership was not the only problem the company had, though. It also showed a strong lack of compassion during a time when compassion could have been its greatest asset. The company missed an amazing opportunity to make things right.

Instead of making it right, BP allowed oil to pour into the Gulf of Mexico without really doing anything about it for weeks. There were some failed “attempts” to cap the spill, but it seemed that these were half-hearted, at best. They really failed to get to the heart of what would have helped improve the situation, and what would have addressed the concerns of the public, as well. Among the most obvious gaffes was the realization that BP had not planned for crisis management in any way. It was as though the company assumed a serious problem like the Deepwater Horizon explosion and resulting oil spill could not, or would not, happen to them, so there was no point in “wasting” any time or money being ready for it. When it happened, they clearly were not ready.

There were two facets to BP’s lack of readiness. The first had to do with the health and safety of their workers and the environment, while the second was related to their public image. The company had slashed PR budgets and also cut costs where government relations were concerned, in order to reduce overhead. But that only worked as long as nothing went wrong. When a catastrophe like Deepwater Horizon occurred, there was no plan in place to save the company’s reputation. At the same time, the company had not put any money into crisis management, either, so the ways to handle environmental and worker impacts were not funded or even considered. Both areas were in serious need of correction, which would have been far easier before the oil spill occurred.

It is generally not good practice for a company to have a major disaster and then choose to hire a crisis management firm to address the fallout. Most large companies have these firms already available to them and plans in place for potential problems. Since BP did not have any of that at the time, they had to start from scratch on what they were going to do and say. That delay cost the company significantly, because of the heavy environmental damage and perceived lack of compassion the company displayed in the days and weeks after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. As millions of gallons of oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico, the company seemed to take its time doing anything at all about the issue. That did not sit well with the majority of people in the country.

Ultimate Guide to Crisis Management

Communications — Where BP Really Went Wrong

It was not just in the way the company handled the Deepwater Horizon event that was a real problem, though. It was also in the way the company talked about the event. The CEO of BP, Tony Hayward, was quoted as saying, “There’s no one who wants this thing over more than I do. You know, I’d like my life back.” His insensitivity to the people who had lost their lives and the others who had their lives damaged or disrupted due to the oil spill was talked about for some time. Even if the CEO felt that way, which would be understandable due to the stress of everything taking place, he should have focused his public statements on the tragedy of the people who died, and all the serious environmental impacts of the Deepwater Horizon incident caused, instead of himself.

Hayward received significant backlash for his comments and the ways he seemed to ignore or misunderstand the gravity of the issue around him. He was also quoted as saying there would be minimal impact on the Gulf, and talked about his sympathy for the “small people” who lived along the coast. Naturally, people who lived and worked in the area did not take kindly to Hayward, who appeared to think of himself as being far above most “normal” people. The lack of planning for crisis communications really affected BP the longer the situation went on without public information being provided to those who were worried about their health, their jobs, and their local environment. Even when crisis planning help was offered, BP was slow to take the offerers up on that option.

While BP did eventually launch an ad campaign in an effort to communicate with the public about how they would clean up the spill and restore the environment, that was met with a lot of skepticism given the company’s tone-deaf response to concerns up to that point. Additionally, the ad campaign cost the company $50 million, which could have been used for clean-up efforts. A far less expensive campaign would have been enough, and the biggest focus should have been on getting the work done, instead of telling people that the work would get done. It was six weeks after the Deepwater Horizon exploded before these ads even began to air, showing that BP did not seem to see that time was of the essence, or take the future of the Gulf Coast seriously.

US Government Actions Led to Big Company Changes

The fines BP received for their damage to the environment and careless response to it were unprecedented. There was a fine of $5.5 billion for violations of the Clean Water Act and another $8.8 billion penalty for the damages to natural resources. Those were only the fines and penalties levied by the EPA and did not take into account all the other lawsuits that came about from environmental damage, business harm, and loss of life. Between 2012 and 2015, there were a lot of different settlements between the US government and BP or BP’s partners, based on lawsuits and assessed penalties. Most of those settlements were in the millions of dollars. But the biggest impact was not to BP’s bottom line. Instead, it was really to their reputation and branding.

In 2018, BP re-emerged from all the trauma it had been dealing with as a stronger and leaner company. Robert Dudley had taken over from Hayward and was committed to re-inventing the company so it could remain viable. Now, BP is not the big-name it once was. But it is a strong company that is smaller and more compact than before. It was forced to sell off millions in assets to pay the fines and lawsuits resulting from the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon and the resulting 87 days that un-capped well pumped oil into the Gulf of Mexico. There were times when it was questionable as to whether the company would survive at all. But it did, and it seems as though lessons have been learned from the way it failed to handle one of the biggest environmental disasters of all time.

Lessons Learned From the Oil Spill

There are several takeaways to be considered from the Deepwater Horizon incident. While these are likely lessons that BP has learned the hard way, they are also lessons that any company can use to have a better understanding of crisis management and how it should be handled. The most important thing to remember about crisis management is that it needs to be fully and completely in place before a crisis occurs. Waiting until it happens and then hoping to get quick, quality help with it is just not realistic for the majority of companies. Instead, every company should have a fully planned and functional crisis management plan in place that is periodically reviewed and updated. That plan should include PR, which is one of the areas where BP had the most trouble.

Answer & Explanation

Context Setting: CASE STUDY: BP and the Deepwater Horizon Disaster of 2010:

  • It's been ten years since the Deepwater Horizon disaster, and BP is still feeling the effects.
  • The oil spill was one of the worst environmental disasters in history, and BP has paid out billions of dollars in fines and settlements.
  • This case study looks at BP's response to the disaster, as well as the long-term effects of the spill.
  • It also examines BP's sustainability efforts in the years since the spill and how they have changed the way the company does business.

Q1. Overview the case study in BP's operations management and analyze the issues to determine the core problem that led to the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.

  • The Deepwater Horizon Disaster was a tragic event that occurred in 2010 when an oil rig operated by BP exploded, killing 11 people and causing one of the worst environmental disasters in history.
  • The explosion led to a massive oil leak that contaminated the Gulf of Mexico for months, causing devastating damage to marine life and the economy of the region.
  • It is clear that there were many problems with BP's operations leading up to the disaster, including safety concerns and cost-cutting measures that likely contributed to the accident.
  • However, the core problem that led to the disaster was BP's failure to properly assess and manage risk. In particular, BP did not adequately plan for or respond to a potential blowout, which ultimately led to the catastrophic release of oil into the environment.
  • This case study provides a detailed look at how BP's poor risk management practices led to the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.
  • It is an important reminder of the need for companies to carefully consider all risks associated with their operations, and to have robust plans in place to mitigate those risks.

Q2. Observe the operational culture of BP and the relationships with its contractors. Analyze Macondo's project decisions that lead to the well oil leak from the views of a) Halliburton cement contractor Jesse Marc Gagliano b) Transocean's Chief Electronics Technician Mike Williams and BP's Decision Makers for the project.

  • When Jesse Marc Gagliano, a cement contractor for Halliburton, observed the operational culture of BP and its relationship with contractors, he noted that BP tended to micromanage its contractors.
  • Gagliano felt that this led to a lack of communication and collaboration between BP and its contractors.
  • He also felt that BP's decision-makers for the Macondo project did not fully understand the risks involved in the project.
  • Mike Williams, Chief Electronics Technician for Transocean, had a similar experience.
  • He observed that BP was more concerned with cost-cutting than safety.
  • Williams also felt that BP's decision-makers did not fully understand the risks involved in the project.
  • Both Gagliano and Williams believe that these factors led to the well oil leak at Macondo.
  • From the perspective of BP's decision-makers, they likely felt that they were acting in the best interest of the company.
  • They may have believed that micromanaging contractors would save money and that they fully understood the risks involved in the project.
  • However, their actions led to a tragic event that could have been prevented.
  • It is clear that the operational culture of BP and its relationships with contractors played a role in the Macondo disaster.
  • If BP had been more open to communication and collaboration, and if its decision-makers had fully understood the risks involved, the disaster may have been prevented.

Q3. Evaluate the impact of the supply-chain reactions from the Deepwater Horizon Disaster using the Supply-Chain Decisions Impact Strategy and other related theories or models. Focus on Macondo's Project supply chain reactions from the procurement of inventories until the environmental outcome of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.

  • The Deepwater Horizon Disaster had a significant impact on the supply chain for Macondo's Project.
  • The procurement of inventories was disrupted, and the environmental outcome of the disaster was devastating.
  • The Supply-Chain Decisions Impact Strategy can be used to evaluate the impact of the supply-chain reactions from the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.
  • The Deepwater Horizon Disaster occurred on April 20th, 2010, when an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig caused it to sink.
  • This resulted in a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which had a devastating impact on the environment.
  • The spill also disrupted the supply chain for Macondo's Project, as many of the supplies needed for the project were procured from suppliers in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • The Supply-Chain Decisions Impact Strategy can be used to evaluate the impact of disruptions to the supply chain.
  • This model takes into account four factors: supplier availability, transportation, inventory, and production.
  • By evaluating these factors, it is possible to determine how much of an impact a disruption to the supply chain will have on a company's operations.
  • In terms of supplier availability, many suppliers in the Gulf region were impacted by the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.
  • Some suppliers were unable to ship product due to damage from the spill, while others were forced to increase prices due to shortages.
  • This had a direct impact on Macondo's Project, as it made it more difficult and expensive to procure supplies.
  • In terms of transportation, the Deepwater Horizon Disaster had a major impact on the ability to transport supplies to and from the Gulf region.
  • Many roads and bridges were damaged by the spill, making it difficult for trucks to access suppliers.
  • This made it more difficult and expensive to transport supplies to Macondo's Project.
  • In terms of inventory, the Deepwater Horizon Disaster resulted in a shortage of many supplies needed for Macondo's Project.
  • This was due to the fact that many suppliers in the Gulf region were unable to ship product or were forced to increase prices.
  • This made it more difficult to procure supplies and caused delays in the project.
  • In terms of production, the Deepwater Horizon Disaster had a significant impact on Macondo's Project.
  • The disaster disrupted the supply chain, making it more difficult and expensive to procure supplies.
  • This had a direct impact on the project, as it caused delays and increased costs.

Q4. If you are the risk management committee assigned to investigate the consequences from the Deep Horizon Disaster, formulate a strategic forecasting analysis using related theories or formulas to overcome such disaster. Focus on the environmental and economic perspectives in the forecasting analysis approach.

  • There are a number of ways to approach a strategic forecasting analysis in the wake of a disaster like the Deep Horizon.
  • One key focus should be on environmental concerns and another key focus should be on economic concerns.
  • From an environmental perspective, it is important to consider the long-term effects of the spill.
  • This includes looking at the impact on wildlife, ecosystems, and human health.
  • It is also important to consider the potential for future spills and how to prevent them.
  • From an economic perspective, it is important to look at the short-term and long-term impacts of the spill.
  • This includes looking at the impact on jobs, businesses, tourism, and government revenue.
  • It is also important to consider the potential for legal action and insurance claims.
  • Both environmental and economic concerns should be considered when formulating a strategic forecasting analysis in the wake of the Deep Horizon disaster.

Detailed explanation is stated above.
