What is the purpose of a cover letter?

Cover letters are one-page documents that go beyond what’s in your CV. They’re your ace, on account of convincing potential employers that you’re the best candidate for a job. For example, our entry-level digital marketing cover letter aims to help aspiring digital marketers get their foot in the door without any prior work experience.

You’re also encouraging whoever’s reading to look at your CV. Although there are businesses that still manually sift through CVs, more and more are using applicant tracking software (ATS).

How to write a cover letter for a social media job?

What to include in a social media cover letter.

Like an entry-level digital marketing cover letter, your social media cover letter needs a header, introduction, body, and closing statement.

Header : The header needs to include your full name and contact information, followed by the date, the name of the hiring manager, and their details. It should look like this:

Body : After that, start your letter by greeting the hiring manager and mentioning the role you’re vying for. Mention where you heard about this position, or if someone in their organization referred you to this role. It should end with a hook that leads to the body of the letter.

As for the body, your second paragraph should feature your skills and experiences. Tie your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, volunteer record, and non-marketing work experience with your skills, and how both can apply to your role. Any award or competition wins apply here.

Your third paragraph should include any research on the company or role. Relate your motivations or experiences to either a business or role, or a project they are working on. Your commitment to skills and career growth should also go here.

Closing paragraph : Lastly, your closing paragraph should be simple but impactful. Call the reader to take action and reach out to you for any further information, or an interview.

How long should a cover letter be?

A cover letter should only be one page long. To achieve this length, all your sentences should be concise and to the point. You can play around with the sections highlighted below, but make sure you’re not repeating parts unnecessarily.

Additionally, only include details relevant to the position you’re applying for. Let’s pretend you’re applying for a social media manager role. You decided to write about the time you volunteered for a pet shelter in your cover letter.

In this case, you should focus on the transferable skills you displayed that are applicable to becoming a social media manager. That could be your interpersonal skills, critical thinking, or promotional skills.

Lastly, ensure everything is readable. Avoid run-on sentences, and try to only have 3 to 4 short sentences in each paragraph to keep everything manageable.

That will bore the hiring manager and cast doubt on your ability to engage the company’s target audience. Try this instead: 

Responding to Adobe’s mission to change the world and empower others through digital experiences, I’m excited to foster connectedness and collaboration among creative professionals as Frame.io’s first social media manager. Growing with customers as they create is a precious event not to be missed—it’s also an opportunity close to my heart. Watching my mother streamline her workload as a seamstress as a child inspired me to do things faster and better. Today, I love leveraging software as workflow solutions to facilitate positive change so that others can benefit from these discoveries.

This opener draws the reader in with confidence, stating first an alignment with the parent company’s values, then showing passion from personal experience and confidence in their ability for the job. 

Paragraphs 2-3:  The following two paragraphs affirm the credentials and qualifications you noted in your first paragraph. Select one clear, relevant accomplishment to elaborate upon in each section relevant to the needs mentioned in the job description, like social media metrics or content generation process optimization. 

When possible, quantify your results and be detailed and specific. It also doesn’t hurt to connect your achievements to the company’s mission and values, as that’s an extra point toward aligning yourself with the company. 

My marketing communications role with the NBA allowed me to connect with fans and viewers like myself through social media engagement. In my final year with them, my team and I successfully developed marketing strategies that consistently outperformed target metrics such as video completion rate and engagement rate 70% of the time. 

This paragraph notes the candidate’s accomplishment in outperforming target metrics. Still, it also provides a justification that their specific niche experience allowed them to better connect with the target audience, delivering an effective content strategy that showed results. 

Closing paragraph:  You’ve hooked them in with your opening paragraph, and now’s the time to reel in the catch—wrap it up with a sentence summary of how your values and qualifications can potentially fulfill the company or organization’s needs, then finish up with a call to action. 

Don’t do this: 

I think I’ll be a great fit for this social media manager role, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. 

It’s bland and disinterested—you’re trying to maintain momentum so that you can cross the finish line strong, not flop over it like a dead fish.

Signature:  If you didn’t say “thank you” in the closing paragraph, this is the time to do so. Sign off with a professional close like “best regards,” “sincerely,” or the like, and use your real name.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Catherine, the Princess of Wales, apologized on Monday for doctoring a photo of her with her three children, which was recalled by several news agencies on Sunday after they determined the image had been manipulated .

The decision to recall the photo reignited a storm of speculation about Catherine, who has not been seen in public since Christmas Day and had abdominal surgery in January. In her statement, the 42-year-old princess chalked up the alteration to a photographer’s innocent desire to retouch the image.

“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” Catherine wrote in a post on social media. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.”

The photo, which marked Mother’s Day in Britain, depicted a smiling Catherine surrounded by her children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

Kensington Palace said that William had taken the photo last week in Windsor, where the family lives in Adelaide Cottage, on the grounds of Windsor Castle. But Catherine is known as a keen photographer, and the palace often distributes her photos of the family.

Hours after Kensington Palace released the photo, The Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse issued advisories urging news organizations to remove the image.

The A.P. said that after a post-publication inspection of the photograph, its editors determined that the image “shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand.” The source of the photo, it said “had manipulated the image in a way that does not meet A.P.’s photo standards.”

The details of the photo show a range of visual inconsistencies suggesting it was doctored. In several areas of the image, details like a sleeve or a zipper don’t line up, or have artificial patterns.

A palace official said Catherine made minor adjustments in what was meant to be an informal picture of the family together for Mother’s Day. The official reiterated that William had taken the photo, though Catherine edited it.

Samora Bennett-Gager, an expert in photo retouching, identified several other questionable elements, including the edges of her daughter Charlotte’s legs, which he said were unnaturally soft, suggesting the background had been manipulated. Catherine’s hand on the waist of her son, Louis, is blurry, which he said could indicate the image was taken from a separate frame of the shoot.

The photograph appeared on newspaper front pages and websites around the world, including the website of The New York Times. The Times removed the photo from an article about it on Sunday evening.

The biggest moments from Biden’s 2024 State of the Union address

President Biden delivered an aggressive State of the Union speech Thursday night in which he drew sharp contrasts with former president Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress.

Biden made reference to “my predecessor” more than a dozen times and challenged GOP lawmakers over their resistance to his first-term agenda. As the speech went on, he increasingly engaged with angry outbursts from the audience .

It was a speech befitting the political moment, as Biden faces an expected rematch against Trump and tries to push his agenda through a polarized Congress.

While Republicans found multiple occasions to jeer, Democrats broke out in chants of “Four more years!” more than once.

Here were six highlights:

‘My predecessor’

Within the first few minutes of the speech, Biden swiped at Trump — and did not let up.

Biden knocked Trump over topics including his coziness with Russia, the Jan. 6 , 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, and his leadership during the coronavirus pandemic.

After describing the economic and societal anguish brought by the pandemic, Biden said his predecessor “failed the most basic” presidential duty: “the duty to care.”

That drew an angry outburst from the audience as someone yelled out, “Liar!” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) shook his head.

Abortion rights

Biden wasted little time addressing a top issue for Democrats in the November election: abortion rights.

Biden criticized Trump for bragging about appointing the Supreme Court justices who in 2022 helped overturn Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to an abortion. And with some of the justices in the audience, Biden warned that the decision has unleashed a political storm.

“With all due respect, justices, women are not without electoral or political power,” Biden said. “You’re about to realize just how much.”

Biden also seized on the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children , which has disrupted fertility care in the state. Democrats have called it the latest consequence of Republicans’ long campaign against abortion rights and reproductive care. Biden challenged the GOP to “guarantee” IVF protections “nationwide.”

Looking to November, Biden also accused Trump of wanting a national abortion ban, a topic the former president has ducked as he prepares for the general election. “My god, what other freedoms would you take away?” Biden said.

Mixing it up with congressional Republicans

While Biden repeatedly criticized Trump, he also did not hesitate to mix it up with the Republican lawmakers in the room.

Discussing Jan. 6 early in the speech, Biden said Trump “and some of you here seek to bury the truth” about what happened that day.

As the speech went on, though, Republicans in the audience became more willing to respond — and Biden obliged them. One of those moments arrived when Biden charged Republicans with wanting to cut Social Security and cut taxes for the wealthy.

“Oh, no? You guys don’t want another $2 trillion tax cut?” Biden said. “I kind of thought that’s what your plan was. Well, that’s good to hear.”

Biden also appeared happy to highlight the unanimous Republican opposition some of his signature proposals have faced in Congress. Referencing the Inflation Reduction Act — a sweeping measure to combat climate change, lower health-care costs and reduce the federal deficit — that Biden signed in 2022, he said Thursday that it sought to lower prescription drug prices and noted that “not one of you Republican buddies voted for it.”

Border battle

Addressing one of the biggest vulnerabilities in his reelection campaign — the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border — Biden again called on Republicans to drop their resistance to the Senate bipartisan security deal that the GOP recently scuttled at the behest of Trump.

“We can fight about fixing the border,” Biden said, “or we can fix it.”

The border deal would overhaul the asylum system and give the president new power to effectively shut down the border if illegal crossings reach a certain threshold. But Trump lobbied Republican lawmakers to oppose the deal, calling it a political gift for Biden.

Biden touted the proposal’s toughness in his speech, which led to objections from Republicans in the audience. Biden also used the moment to engage with GOP lawmakers, credulously asking why they did not like a bill “that conservatives got together and said was a good bill.”

Going into the speech, Republicans had challenged Biden to “say her name” and mention Laken Riley, the slain Georgia nursing student whose alleged killer, immigration authorities say, illegally entered the country .

They got their way — sort of — while Biden discussed the bipartisan border security deal. Responding to an outburst from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Biden paused and addressed the matter, though he appeared to initially mispronounce Riley’s first name as “Lincoln.”

“An innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal, that’s right,” Biden said.

Tough on Russia

The first moments of Biden’s speech were striking not just for the direct criticism of Trump but also for the context in which it came. Calling for increased Ukraine aid, Biden deployed the kind of tough-on-Russia rhetoric that has become less common in the GOP under Trump.

“My message to President Putin … is simple,” Biden said. “We will not walk away. We will not bow down. I will not bow down.”

Ukraine aid has become tied up in Congress, in part because some Trump-aligned Republicans believe the United States should focus more on domestic issues than the overseas conflict.

Biden also did not spare Trump on Russia, hammering him over his recent comments that he would encourage Russia to do whatever they want to a NATO country if that country was not paying enough for defense.

“Bowing down to a Russian leader,” Biden said. “I think it’s outrageous, it’s dangerous and it’s unacceptable.”

The age matter

With polls showing many voters concerned about his age, Biden, 81, did not shy away from the topic.

“I know I may not look like it, but I’ve been around a while,” Biden said jokingly. “And when you get to my age certain things become clearer than ever before.”

He then referenced his age to contrast his optimism for America with Trump’s view, nodding at the fact that Trump is just four years younger than he is.

“Now other people my age see it differently — an American story of resentment, revenge and retribution,” Biden said. “That’s not me.”
