A computer consists of a central processing unit (CPU), monitor, keyboard, printer, UPS and mouse. Between the years 1940 and 1945 when the first electronic digital computers were developed.

Initially the sizes of the computers were as big as a room and consumed a lot of power.

The main motive behind inventing a computer was to create a fast calculating machine having the capability to complete more than task in small amount of time. It is designed in such a way that it can do work of many human beings alone.

During the World War II, it was very important to calculate the speed of the enemy’s weapons and their location to defend them. And these calculations can be done only with the help of advanced machine as these calculations had to be done accurately and mathematically.

In today’s society, using a computer is nothing unique. From communication to shopping, from learning to playing games, almost everything is digitized so that most processes will involve the usage of a computer. It is therefore easy to take for granted the advantages of using a computer especially considering that today’s generation already found computers in use and might therefore have a hard time appreciating just how hard things were before. In doing this assignment, I am hoping not only to become aware of these advantages, but also to appreciate them and in the process make others aware of them as well.

Some of these advantages, as discussed in the ‘Discovering Computers Book’ are as follows: Computers accelerate the speed by which certain tasks can be done, for example entering and retrieving information which would otherwise take much longer were it to be done manually through the filing system. Computers are more reliable than human beings since they will rarely make mistakes as long as the input was correct. This is because they don’t get tired and can perform the same task over and over, resulting in reliable consistency. The storage capacity of computers is huge. Things like maps can be stored in much smaller spaces than they would if they were to be stored manually. Computers have taken communication to a whole new level in that people from all over the world can communicate via the internet. Information on just about anything can be obtained at the click of a button and this makes it easier to learn about different places all over the world.

Some other advantages include making work easier in offices, creating fun for children and accessing the internet. Computers make work easier in offices by providing safe storage to information and the easy retrieval of the same. In computers so much information can be stored in so little space. If this same information were to be stored manually it would fill up so many rooms. Children find fun in computers by playing games and also having a lively place from which they can learn since computers provide an interactive mode of learning. The internet is one of the greatest benefits of computers since it is an easy and fast source of much information, and it connects the whole world. Today people do not have to travel in order to experience different cities since they can ‘visit’ those places through virtual reality. This way they are more informed before committing to touring certain places.

It may not be possible to list down every advantage of using computers as these are numerous and they apply to people differently. Whilst this may be true, I have learnt a lot from this research. I feel that it is so easy to take for granted the benefits of having computers. Before computers, processes like filing and retrieving information would take so much more time and space. Computers have solved these problems by making work much easier, faster and more fun. I have learned what I hoped to learn in that I have become more aware of the advantages of using computers and why I should not take them for granted. I have never heard about this as a topic because it is so easy to overlook the importance of learning these advantages. Both sources, i.e. Discovering Computers and the source article give more or less similar advantages of using computers.

With computers, learners today can access a lot of valuable information concerning their research projects. There are some sites providing free access to academic resources for them. These sites include Khan’s Academy, Byte-Notes, Codecademy, and the most popular of them all, Wikipedia.

Research students make their research relevant and of high quality with the use of related sites, since they can compare what they are delving into with what other researchers are doing. Also, instead of doing one round of research with the same results, they can view what others have done in their research areas and focus on new ideas. This novel approach boosts research quality since the focus on real-life problems is enhanced. The output of their study increases in relevance to their target audience as a result.

Computers also help students save time. Before the introduction of computers, they had to go through large volumes of books and research journals to get the information they needed. Today, with these smart machines, they get their information with just a click.

Despite the benefits of having computers, these intelligent machines can also be harmful to students. The use of computers without a primary purpose leads to time and energy wastage. Some of them spend a substantial amount of time playing games on computers and chatting.

Gaming consumes time and energy, leaving learners unmotivated to focus on their current requirements. Also, some of these computer activities influence how one thinks, such as those that are violence- and war-themed. These can actually affect a gamer’s mental state.

In a similar fashion, spending time chatting with friends on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter make the user lose complete track of time. Not only that, constant exposure to blue light from a screen is damaging to the eyes.

Even worse, students accidentally or willingly gain access to inappropriate sites, such as pornographic websites. These poison their minds and may even lead to decreased morale amongst the student population. Pornography increases the likelihood of sexual objectification in both genders.

In the classroom, tech-savvy learners use computers to cheat in their homework, tests, and research papers. Downloading and submitting an answer as yours is actually a form of plagiarism. Not only is it an academic offense, plagiarizing robs a learner of the potential to excel on his or her own terms.

Computers are important to students and they must be oriented on their correct usage right off the bat. Before using these machines, learners must define the purpose of using them to avoid wasting time and energy and making inappropriate mistakes.

Network administrators should also block unwanted or inappropriate sites. Preventing people from accessing these will help them concentrate and focus on their academic work. The combination of interest and diligence, multiplied by the power and speed of computers, can increase the quality of student life and the actual performance of the user.

Regardless of sector, computers have certainly enhanced our way of life. As with all innovations, it’s not so much the machine that is good or bad; it is really our usage of it that determines its role in our lives.

It is important for a learner to know how to navigate a computer system in order to maximize the many advantages it presents. Used wisely and strategically, the computer, coupled with the speed of the Internet, can be your ally for those long nights of trying to beat the deadline. Research has become that much faster (albeit sometimes overwhelming, with the amount of data out there) and all you have to do is reformat the information on your machine.

What Are The Disadvantages Of A Computer?

While there are numerous good aspects to owning a computer, like any piece of technology, it can turn into a weapon against you if you aren’t able to use it properly. Being able to connect to huge amounts of data at warp speeds can be addictive to some. There is a phenomenon called “sidebar-hopping,” where a user keeps on clicking related links because of the obsession to find more data to no end. This can cause you to lose track of present time and lose precious energy to do what you were really supposed to do online. While it helps you communicate faster with loved ones, getting overly consumed by chatting can put your important tasks on hold. It also adversely affects your health, with prolonged exposure to blue light weakening eyesight. It can be especially harmful to children whose brains are still developing.

What is a computer? A computer is an electronic device that receives and processes information to produce the desired results.

A computer can perform a large number of tasks by carrying out complex arithmetical, logical or other set of instructions called programs.

It plays an important role in our life. Our life has become centered around computers and computerized systems.

Various Parts of a Computer: The various parts of a computer includes a system unit, monitor, keyboard, electronic-mouse, printer, speakers, CD drive, etc.

1. System Unit: The system unit is the most important part of the computer. The system unit houses the CPU (microprocessor), hard disk, random access memory (RAM), motherboard, etc.

The CPU processes the information.
RAM stores the temporary information while the system is on. It removes the data as soon as the system is switched off.
Hard Disk stores the saved information is stored on the hard disk.
The Mother Board connects and allows communication between various units of the computer.

2. Monitor: The screen of the displays the information. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors are very bulky. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) monitors are thin and light.

3. Keyboard: Letters and numbers are keyed into the computer system through the keyboard.

4. Mouse: It points the cursor and is used in selecting an icon on the screen.

The other components of a computer system includes speakers, modem, printers, etc.

Computers can quickly process huge amount of data. Computers can complete various tasks effectively than most human-beings. It has automated complex tasks that were once considered boring and tedious for humans. Hence, Computer has greatly increased our efficiency to do various tasks. The advantages of computer are given below:

Stores data in digital format: Computers can store millions of pages of information in digital format.
Huge storage: We can store huge information. The present day hard-disks can store 100s of Gigabytes (GB) of information. Large businesses store their marketing and sales data in their computer systems. Even sensitive data of customers are securely protected in a computerized environment.
Play games: When it comes to games, the choices are almost unlimited.
Calculations: Businesses are increasingly using spreadsheets and other software as a tool for performing mathematical calculations.
Prepare and store official documents: You can use a word processing software to prepare, edit and save any text document. The concept of paperless offices is finally taking its shape.
Presentations: If your office demands that you prepare presentations, you can prepare it in a PowerPoint.
Internet: You can connect your computer to Internet and browse through huge data. People use internet for various purposes. Students can use internet to download study materials. A research analyst can do market research over internet. A marketing person can gather relevant data across various geographical boundaries. A prospective customer can find a service provider over internet.
Multimedia: Computer can also be used as an entertainment device. We can play various multimedia applications such as music, video, etc.
Prepare books of accounts: With the help of accounting software, we can prepare our books of accounts.
Reduced cost: The introduction of computer has resulted into a reduction of cost to perform various complicated tasks.
Availability: A computer doesn’t get tired. It can perform non-stop. You can start working on your computer whenever you feel that the time is right. Your computer is always available for you.

Disadvantages

It is true that even computer is not free from defects. The disadvantages of computer are given below:

Ever changing technology: The technology that is new today, may soon become obsolete. We need to regularly upgrade the hardware and software in a computerized environment. This involves additional time and cost.
Increased manpower cost: The computer needs to be operated by skilled person. This has led to an increase in manpower cost for organizations. Due to the inherent risks, huge expenditure are made ensure data security.
Computer stops responding: At times the operating system of the computer may stop responding or functioning. Though this problem is generally solved by restarting the computer, but sometimes you may have to take the support of the technician.
Viruses: The threat of virus and malware attack always remains in the computerized environment. To cope up with these risks, various anti-virus software are available in the market. If you are using a good antivirus, you are almost sure that your private information and other sensitive data are secured.
Reduction in employment opportunity: The introduction of computers has negatively impacted the employability of computer illiterate people.
Health issues: People often stick to a particular position for long hours working in front of the computer. Bad posture due to constantly looking at the computer screen may lead to neck related health problems such as cervical spondylosis. This may result in health issues such as back pain, and irritation in the eyes.
Less reliance on human memory: People rely too much on the computers. People become careless and tend to forget things faster.
Need uninterrupted supply of electricity: It needs electricity to work. Unless a computer is supported by powerful rechargeable battery, any power breaks may effect the office productivity.
It takes time to learn. The computer systems run on operating systems. Further, customized ERP software are used in large organizations. The employees need to learn about these software before they can start feeding the data independently.

The use of technology has stirred differences in opinions among people. While one group feels multimedia or the use of computers can be beneficial to the young learners, others point out the harmful effects of the use of technology in the classroom and at home. In this essay, both opinions will be discussed in order to get a comprehensive insight into the matter.

While computers are replacing the conventional methods of teaching, there are some factors that prevent its wholehearted acceptance in education. Firstly, easy ingress to computers and similar equipment may make the learners careless. Instead of using it to educate themselves, they might spend more time playing games and searching for unwanted information. This not only leads to addiction but also diverts the purpose of learning. It may further lead to health issues like obesity, eyesight issues as the young ones will not involve in physical activities. Secondly, being a machine, the computer lacks the human touch that a teacher can provide. One may get loads of information from the internet through the computer, but unlike a human educator, it will not be able to motivate the learner or develop skills like leadership, perseverance and teamwork. Finally, using content from the world wide web on the computer without citing references or proper paraphrasing may lead to plagiarism .

On the other hand, using a computer can make teaching easy for the educator. The students are always interested in watching videos and listening to stories than reading a book. So, the teacher can show them videos related to the topic he/she is teaching and explain the concepts. Moreover, using the internet on the computer, a person can accrue knowledge on various topics he is interested in. He/she does not need to go out to a library and spend hours to get some particulars on the subject matter.

To conclude, I would like to say that although the disadvantages outweigh the advantages of using a computer in education, this mode of delivering enlightenment is being accepted gradually. One step that can be taken to ensure that the young people do not misuse the access is to limit the time they spend on the machine and to keep track of what they can access.

Over the period of time, the use of technology has escalated tremendously in almost every sector, including the education sector. While a lot of people are considering the addition of computers into the classrooms a positive development, others with opposing opinions argue that it may have unfavourable ramifications for students. In the following paragraphs, I will be highlighting both of the views and giving my viewpoint.

To begin with, some people believe that excessive exposure to any gadget, be it a smartphone or a computer, can be an addiction that may cause inevitable effects on the minds of youngsters. This is primarily because the internet opens the complete world forth the students. This results in access to unrated sites and compulsive video games, further affecting the character of youngsters and compelling them to live a sedentary life. For example, as per a survey, there has been a substantial increase in health issues among teenagers and the reason could be prolonged sitting in front of the computers.

However, it is undeniable that administered access to computers for a restricted amount of time can help students. Additionally, advanced technology plays a crucial role in educating youngsters and developing their learning potential. The reason behind it is students accessing more information on the internet that they were devoid of before. Moreover, because of hi-tech services and globalization, students can now learn from home, regardless of their location.

Concluding the topic, it can be said that although the introduction of computers has a few disadvantages when used for the correct purpose, I believe they can help boost knowledge and help them grow better.

Meaning: following the usual practices of the past

Eg: Most of my friends come from conventional families unlike me.

Wholehearted

Meaning: having or showing no doubt or uncertainty about doing something, supporting someone

Eg: The woman understood that the poet gave her a wholehearted reply.

Meaning: right or permission to enter.

Eg: The thief got an easy ingress to the castle through the broken wall.

Perseverance

Meaning: continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition

Eg: Due to his perseverance, he reached the summit even in the rough weather.

Meaning: the process or practice of using another person’s ideas or work and pretending that it is your own

The use of computer in education is increasingly popular and its effect is quite debatable. Some persons believe it is a good development while others do not. This essay will discuss both views, and argue that it is good development.

There are some reasons why some people think the use of computer for learning has negative consequences. Firstly, they believe that computer will distract students, as they will use it for non educative purposes, such as watching movies and porn, surfing the internet on social media platforms, playing computer games, leading to lack of focus on the primary reason for the computer. Secondly, the cost of acquiring and maintaining computers are high, and may not be feasible for all settings. These include the cost of acquiring the device and the needed software, the cost of electricity needed to power the computers. These expenses, when added to the cost of education, makes education extremely expensive and unattainable.

However others argue that the use of computer in education brings positive development. Computers make learning and teaching easier, with the use of power point presentation, students can easily visualize what is being taught, leading to effective understanding. Also, computer reduce the need for multiple textbook and learning materials, as a storing device, it can be used to store most textbook and other learning materials as soft copies, resulting in lighter luggage, while transiting between classes. Further more, access to information and research articles are readily available with the use of computers, therefore making assignments and research project faster and easier.

In conclusion, while there are both negative and positive consequences, associated with the use of computer in learning, it can be seen that it makes learning easier and should be promoted, while efforts made to checkmate its negative consequences.

We live in a world where computers have become more of a home appliance rather than a technological gadget for home. They are as common and basic as television in most middle class family homes. It is normal for a toddler to grow up with having access to a computer or at least a smartphone or tablet around them. In this essay I am going to highlight pros and cons of using computers in education. While a few decades ago it was a fantasy, today’s generation of students is completing most of their learning on computers. We cannot deny the advantages of having easy access to computers for learning. The primary advantage being providing an audio-visual aid for teaching complex topics in an easy and detailed manner. For growing children it also provides an easy access to information on their study related topics far beyond their course material. There are online communities where students can connect and share information surpassing borders. This gives a fair advantage to the students in developing countries as it puts them at par with the advanced knowledge available in different parts of the world. Despite all its advantages, we cannot deny the disadvantages of deploying computers in education. First of all, it minimizes the human touch and may lead to the risk of children growing into adults that lack interpersonal skills. Since you can access a lot of information, computers can also be distracting and deviate the user from their learning path. In addition to this the sedentary mode of learning can also lead to problems like obesity, loneliness and other health issues, not to mention the lack of interest in sports. To conclude, I would like to say that anything used in excess will have its negative impacts. The best strategy for educating the young minds can be a balanced mix of both: teaching on computers and the good old-school traditional methods. This way the next generation can have the best of both worlds and grow up to become smarter and equipped individuals ready to face the world.

Essay 311 – Advantages and disadvantages of using computer technology in education

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 311.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Computers are becoming an essential part of education. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using computer technology in education and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Computers have become a vital tool in educational institutions. Although the phenomenon suffers from a few drawbacks like varied computer literacy levels and academic dishonesty, I believe that it is more beneficial as it provides enormous resources and an effective teaching tool.

One of the major drawbacks of technology in education is varied computer literacy among teachers and learners. Put simply, computers pose an extra challenge to teachers because they have to deal with learners of varying computer literacy levels. Some pupils come into the classroom well versed in computer literacy, yet others enter with no prior knowledge. It is therefore difficult for educators to handle this vast difference. On top of that, not all teachers are technologically sound when it comes to teaching using computers and the internet. Another primary disadvantage is academic dishonesty. Students who intend to plagiarize can simply copy and paste information into their assignments. For example, at least 20%-25% of students got involved in academic dishonesty, according to a recent college survey, due to the ease of cheating when they took tests from home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, the benefits of using computer technology in education are enormous. To begin with, the main advantage is that students get access to video tutorials, e-books, course materials and online collaboration platforms where they can grasp difficult concepts easily and flexibly. For instance, “Padlet” is a collaboration platform where pupils can ask questions, share ideas as well as continue class discussions beyond the classroom. Even though varied computer literacy and academic dishonesty negatively impact learning, I believe that using computers in education is more advantageous. This is because computers prove to be highly effective teaching tools. For example, teachers, with the help of computers, can show videos, images and texts that are interesting and relevant to what they are teaching.

In conclusion, employing computer technology in education poses some challenges but it offers students a large resource for learning and is proved to be an effective teaching tool. It is expected that teachers would use technology to make education more interesting, engaging and intuitive.

With the advent of modern technology and globalization, schools have started to use various digital technologies in order to improve the teaching and learning processes and make lessons more interactive. However, such trends, in my perspective, have their own drawbacks. This essay will consider both perspectives but will focus on the negative impacts of cutting-edge digital devices on the education process.

On the one hand, the advantages of using the internet, computers and other portable devices in the current educational process are enormous. Computers have a database of a range of educational materials such as video tutorials, e-books, and other materials that help students learn better. The interactive platforms that computers enable teachers and students to use are highly beneficial. It connects learners from anywhere in the world and offers updated information and educational games, which makes the educational process more interactive and fun, while at the same time helping students to obtain more useful and newest information in a more relaxed atmosphere.

While computers might seem like a useful instrument in the studying process, it has severe drawbacks on the quality of education and students’ mental health. Nowadays, many tutors use computers to provide their lessons and the whole process is done online. It lacks the personal touch and in-person motivation in the classroom. Some lessons are prepared without a detailed explanation and they contain some fuzziest points. Such a method of teaching, using computers leads to surface learning, useful only to pass formal exams but unfortunately fail to provide comprehensive knowledge. Moreover, modern, educational-social platforms and portable digital devices are often fulfilled with tons of useless information, and gullible students who watch all educational-interactive videos often overload their brain with useless and useful information and damage their brain cells. In the short term, it might create anxiety and stress, but in the long term, it might lead to various neurological disorders such as delirium and suicidal tendency due to the unstructured neuro-bonds.

In conclusion, despite some tangible benefits of using electronic devices in contemporary schools, they have many disadvantages. Their benefits pale in comparison to the tremendous negative impacts of this process. It is expected that real teachers would teach students in classroom-based education settings.

Some people think that computer games are bad for children, while others believe that they are useful. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computer games and give your own opinion.

Sample response

Computer games are addictive. That is the main reason children play them for hours on end. There are several disadvantages to spending a lot of time in front of the computer.

Computer games merely provide entertainment. Children who are addicted to computer games tend to have poor grades because they do not get enough time to focus on their studies. Also, they have reduced social skills. They are constantly glued to their screens and show hardly any interest in interacting with their family members or peers. This can lead to social isolation and serious behavioural problems.

Some popular computer games glorify violence and crime. Children who grow up playing these games may get into anti-social activities. Even if they don’t become criminals in the future, they may still exhibit a disregard for values. Computer games also cause vision problems in children. Children are not supposed to stare at the computer screen for hours on end. If they do, they will develop serious eye strain which may also affect their studies.

On the bright side, computer games make children competitive. Games that require them to play against virtual or real opponents living in another part of the world improve their concentration and ability to take decisions quickly. These are definitely positive aspects but a child does not have to play computer games to develop these skills.

To conclude, after analysing the advantages and disadvantages of playing computer games it is not hard to see that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. In my opinion, parents should restrict the amount of time their children spend in front of the computers. That said, there is no harm in playing a game or two every now and then, but addiction is definitely a problem.

Acceptor-donor-acceptor-type molecules with large electrostatic potential difference for effective nir photothermal theranostics.

Although acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A)-type molecules show advantages in constructing NIR absorbing photothermal agents (PTAs) due to their strong intramolecular charge transfer and molecular planarity, their applications in photothermal therapy (PTT) of tumor are insufficiently explored. In particular, the influence of ESP distribution on optical properties of A-D-A photosensitizers has not been investigated. Herein, we utilized the advantages of A-D-A-type molecules with large ESP difference to construct NIR absorbing PTA with sufficient extinction coefficient (ɛ) and high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE). The calculation results of density functional theory (DFT) indicate that the large ESP difference of Y6 may increase intermolecular interactions and induce tight packing of the A-D-A photosensitizer. As a result, Y6 NP exhibited an obvious bathochromic shift of absorption peak from 711 nm to 822 nm, with a NIR-II emission extended to 1400 nm. Moreover, a sufficient ɛ of 3.34 L·g-1·cm-1 and PCE of 66.3% were attained, making Y6 NP suitable for PTT. With a concentration of 100 μg/mL, Y6 NPs in aqueous dispersion yielded a death rate of 93.4% for 4T1 cells upon an 808 nm laser irradiation (1 W·cm-2) for 10 min, which is comparable with the best results of recently reported PTT agents.
