Learn About the Ocean – Anytime, Anywhere

Today, on World Ocean Day, National Geographic has updated its map policy to recognize the Earth’s fifth ocean—the Southern Ocean . The Southern Ocean forms a distinct ecological region filled with vibrant ecosystems that are home to species like whales & penguins. Our team conducted a scientific expedition to the Southern Ocean in 2019, with the goal of filling scientific gaps and exploring the connectivity of Antarctic marine flora and fauna throughout the region.

Less than eight percent of the ocean is protected, and yet the ocean covers 70 percent of the planet. The ocean sustains life for all of us who live here, including more than half of the air we humans breathe. We gain food, jobs, travel, recreation, knowledge, growth, and innumerable opportunities from the ocean, and yet we do not give back all that we take. With 42% of the world’s population under the age of 25, we believe that young people and – you – the educators who reach them are key to addressing our planet’s most pressing problems and sustaining a thriving planet. But our greatest stewards of the ocean are learning in classrooms right this minute, and whether they are learning along coastlines or far from the ocean itself inland, and here’s some inspiration for how you can do this for our ocean from fellow educators.

And that work always begins with educators.

The following educators – like so many of you – have taken initiative to lead the work of ocean education and conservation in their classrooms. We hope you find inspiration from the ideas and resources they share to expand your own journey toward leading the future of ocean education.

The ocean is the foundation of a healthy planet, it supplies us with 70% of the oxygen we breathe, it regulates our climate, and it connects all of us no matter our age, background, or location. If students can understand the importance of these characteristics, they will spark curiosity within them about this incredible region of our planet. It may inspire them to study it, to explore it, or to protect it. We believe that you can’t teach students about Earth without teaching them about the ocean – it covers 70% of the surface area. Alex (my collaborator) and I are hoping to create educated and inspired climate changers. Our message is that everyone can be an ocean steward. You can be a creative, a scientist, a politician, or a business leader. It doesn’t matter. If we send the message that only certain people can protect the ocean, it alienates so many others who might lead the way in other disciplines. We know many people from many fields of study who are taking strides to protect our planet. Right now, we need all of us. Further, our interests are not “one track.” By teaching students that their variable passions can intersect, it opens up doors of possibilities of what they can achieve in their lives. 

There are so many critical lessons about the ocean that come to mind – overfishing, the impacts of plastic on marine animals, the importance of sharks, and the migrations of humpback whales. But, my favorite lesson to teach is coral bleaching. Coral bleaching can be simplified very easily to young students by describing it as “stressed,” but also can be expanded upon for older students to understand the specific stressors. I can emphasize the interconnectedness of the ecosystem while teaching students how critical coral reefs are to a healthy ocean. This is a term we use throughout our lessons because we emphasize that everyone has the potential to make a positive difference for our planet and ocean. The topics we cover, like plastic pollution, the sources and impacts of fossil fuels, and mass extinction, are concepts we didn’t learn about until college. Simplifying and teaching students how to understand, and the tools to take action for the better, is how we will cultivate and implement solutions. They will be the ones bearing the burden of the climate emergency, so we feel it is our duty to give them tools to solve it.

Macie Ramirez , Fourth Grade English Language Arts (ELA) Educator

I integrate ELA and Science standards in teaching about the effects of oil spills in the waters surrounding Florida. As a whole group we read a series of articles about the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on the Deepwater Horizon and discuss the lasting effects. The next day, my students engage in a project-based activity where they need to work together to determine the best object to extract oil from their Gulf of Mexico water model. Finally, the students connect their findings to create the best solution for cleaning up oil from the ocean.

This year, I was able to take my lesson one step closer by inviting my PADI Certified SCUBA Instructor to speak to my students virtually about Shark and Ocean Conservation. I teach this lesson because it just skims the surface (no pun intended) on the various issues Florida beaches are experiencing. As a true Floridian, I take pride in advocating for the conservation of our oceans. The best place for me to start is in the classroom!

My students are so engaged with this lesson. Not only are they able to make real world connections, but some are even keen to further their research on marine life topics. I think it opens their minds to a whole new world that impacts the daily lives of humans on land. I believe it is important to expose young minds to appropriate things that will intrigue them. Children learn about geography and the solar system, so it is only right to teach them about the ocean.

I grew up on a small barrier island and have lived next to the ocean for my entire life. Where I come from, we watch the waves to celebrate and mourn. In my community, the ocean is the heart of our world. Water covers more than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface and provides us with oxygen, climate regulation, food, transportation, and so much more. I work to bring nature and the importance of water into my classroom everyday.  

One of my favorite topics to teach is how human impact can affect us on both a local and global scale. To reacquaint students with the natural world, I provide them opportunities to go out into the community and implement apps to better understand communities of organisms near water sources. I start with interactive maps via Map Maker . Mapping our local water sources can create curiosity and foster responsibility for the continued push to protect natural resources. 

I embrace a holistic real-world phenomena approach. Using real world current events empowers learners to take the initiative on being part of a solution. While running classes digitally, it is especially important to further my own creative thinking on designing curriculum using our oceans via the Ocean Literacy Toolkit .

One lesson that I truly enjoy is the National Geographic Water Quality Degradation in the Ocean assignment . This assignment provides students the opportunity to investigate water quality and analyze the relationship between harmful algae blooms, toxic algae, and dead zones. Students are encouraged to explore “success stories” which help them grow mindful of their own potential human impact. This activity reinforces motivation to take action in favor of improving water quality. I support student involvement in Citizen Science Projects that help bring awareness to local issues through the collection of data on a global scale. 

To celebrate World Oceans Day on 6/8, I am very excited to engage students and other passionate educators in the #DebrisTrackerChallenge carried out in our respective communities that “connect our coastlines”. We will be tracking various types of trash using the Marine Debris Tracker app. Then, we will debate solutions through engineering best practices to bring it full circle and remind one another we can all make a difference here and now.

The human behavior solution.

  • Pollution and human waste put our oceans at risk. In response, various cleanup groups have developed ingenious ways to remove tiny plastic pieces called microplastics from the ocean using technology. Some experts, however, are skeptical about whether technology is the best solution. They say it doesn't tackle the real problem—human behavior. While using technology is a good way to start cleaning plastics out of the ocean ecosystem, the real long-term solution is in changing human behavior.
  • Efficient technologies can remove large amounts of debris from the ocean. They don’t require a lot of money or natural resources to work. They’re an important part of keeping our oceans safe, but individuals have to play a part, too. What if we all worked to keep plastic from ending up in the ocean in the first place? What if we addressed the problems that threaten the ocean before the plastic ever floats out to sea?
  • About 40 percent of plastic is used one time before it’s thrown away. This includes plastic bags, straws, and containers. One easy change is to use fabric or reusable bags instead of single-use plastic bags. Another option is to stop using straws in restaurants, or to replace single-use straws with bamboo or stainless-steel straws that are reusable. Reusable water bottles made of stainless steel, aluminum, and reusable plastic can also help keep plastic out of the ocean.
  • Another action everyone can take is to recycle. According to National Geographic, recycling in the United States has remained at nine percent since 2012. Europe is at 30 percent, and China at 25 percent. Find a recycling center near you and see what types of plastic they accept, and set up a recycle bin at home. You can also let people in your community know what you’ve learned so they can recycle, too.
  • Finally, we can clean up litter before it reaches the ocean. This can be done in neighborhoods, communities, and cities. You don’t have to live near a beach. You can still pick up plastic and other debris from streets, parks, or around buildings. The items can be sorted and taken to the recycling center.
  • It takes plastic over 400 years to degrade. Instead of focusing on cleaning oceans, we can make changes to human behavior today. This could make a real difference to the future of our oceans. The steps are simple; our only barrier is our own willingness to change.

The world of fish is very big and interesting. From the graceful goldfish in our home aquarium to the massive great sharks in the ocean, fishes come in amazing varieties. 

The fishes we see today are the product of millions of years of evolution. According to the record of fossils, it is believed that these aquatic animals have been on Earth for more than 500 million years. In the reproductive process of fish, the female deposits the eggs, and the male fertilises them. Though some fish leave their eggs on their own, some species of fish do protect them.’

‘Fishes live in freshwater as well as in salty water. But some fishes live in both. Salmon fish are the perfect example of this as they travel between both fresh and salty water during their lifetime. The freshwater fish need clean water to swim with healthy plants and oxygen. When it comes to fish farming, fish like bettas, guppies, and tetras are kept in freshwater tanks whereas coral reefs are given salty and clean water for survival.’

‘Many fishes migrate long distances to find food or to reach a suitable living environment. Salmon fish are the famous swimming fishes that swim from the ocean to the freshwater rivers to spawn in the place where they have hatched. It is more interesting to know that when the salmon fish spawn, they return to the exact place where they were born to lay their eggs for the next generation.’

‘Fishes are very sophisticated creatures. They face threats with the destruction of habitat, overfishing, pollution in the rivers, and climate change. ‘The human use fish for food, as pet animals, and for recreation and scientific research. If we work together towards water pollution, and overfishing we can give a healthy and long life to fish as well as to their generations.’

Do not Waste Water

While water is quite essential and yet so scarce, however, people fail to realize this fact. They waste water with little or no care for the results of this activity. There are various ways in which one can avoid wasting water . To begin with, all households must get their leaking taps checked. They should fix them immediately as every drop is precious.

Similarly, we must choose buckets instead of showers for bathing. This is a very debatable topic and it needs to be settled. Showers waste a lot of water, so people must prefer buckets. Water Class 6 Notes - Chapter 14

According to the CBSE Syllabus 2023-24, this chapter has been removed from NCERT Class 6 Science textbook.

What is Water?

Water is precious, fundamental and the essential substance required for the existence of life on earth. Water is found naturally and abundantly on our planet Earth. About two-thirds of the total earth’s surface is covered with water. It is a transparent, odourless and tasteless inorganic molecule composed of hydrogen and oxygen.

Uses of Water

We all use water for different purposes, which include everyday household uses, including drinking, cooking,  cleaning, washing, bathing for other domestic, irrigating,  cultivating crops and industrial requirements.  Thus, water is required for many activities, therefore, it is an essential element required for the continuity of life on the planet.

Sources of Water

As mentioned above, about two-thirds of the total earth’s surface is covered with water, but unfortunately, only a small percentage (2 to 3 per cent) is suitable for human use. The other 99.7 per cent available are found in oceans, sea, groundwater, floating in the atmosphere and in icecaps. This water is not safe and is unsuitable for human consumption, as it consists of excess salt, toxins and other impurities, which can lead to illness and other health disorders.

Rivers, ponds, lakes and groundwater are the different sources of water, which can be used for drinking, cooking and other human uses only after proper treatment like boiling, filtering, etc.

Origin of water

  • The origin of the water is found to be from a type of meteorite.
  • The major sources of water for human use are lakes, rivers, ponds etc.
  • The chemical composition of water on Earth is the same as that of some meteorites.

Availability of Water

Uses of water.

Below are the different uses of water in various fields:

  • Irrigation.
  • Cooking food.
  • Transportation.
  • Manufacturing goods.
  • For generating power.
  • Production in industries.
  • Recreational activities like swimming, water sports.

Freshwater is naturally occurring water present on the earth’s surface in ponds and rivers. The major source of rainwater is precipitation in the atmosphere.

71% of Earth is filled with water; out of this 3% is fresh water, and 97% of water is in oceans and seas. Out of this 3% of freshwater, 30% is groundwater(not accessible), and 69% is in the form of glaciers and icebergs. ( not accessible), out of the remaining 1% of water, only 0.006% is used by the people for several purposes like bathing and washing.

Potable Water

The pure form of water, which does not contain any impurities or salts in it and can be used for drinking purposes is called potable water.

Water from Oceans

Out of  71% of the water on earth, 97% is water from oceans and seas. Water from oceans and seas contains dissolved salts in it, hence this water is called saltwater or saline water.

Water Cycle

The process of circulating or the continuous movement of water between water bodies like the ocean, rivers, ponds, lakes and land is called the water cycle. It is also also known as the hydrologic cycle or the hydrological cycle. In this process, the water on the earth changes into three different states of matter – solid, liquid and gas. The complete process of the  water cycle involves the following process.

  • Evaporation.
  • Condensation.
  • Precipitation.

1) Evaporation

Evaporation is the process of converting liquid or water into a gaseous form or vapour state.

The process of converting vapour or gaseous form into its liquid form is called condensation.

3) Precipitation

When more water gets condensed in clouds, or condensation of water vapour in the atmosphere results in precipitation. The precipitation can be in the form of rain, snow, or hail.

The flow of water towards the oceans

  • Rainwater falls into rivers, lakes etc.
  • The rain droplets fall into oceans, rivers, ponds, and seas.
  • Water from the rivers, lakes, and ponds finally flows into the sea and ocean.

Transpiration

In plants, the process of evaporating water through leaves when water is absorbed through roots is called transpiration.

  • Rainfall brings about life, but excess rainfall leads to an increase in water levels in water bodies like rivers and ponds.
  • Adverse effects of floods:
  • Flood causes damage to human life, crops, domestic animals and animals living in the water.
  • This excess water may spread over large areas causing floods.
  • Inadequate rainfall leads to a decrease in groundwater level which makes soil dry. This condition is called drought.
  • At the time of drought, it is difficult to get food and water.

Ground Water

The water present underground or beneath the earth’s surface in spaces of soil and rocks is called groundwater.

Level of water or is the height reached by the water in lakes, ponds, storage tanks, and dams.

Infiltration

The process of water seeping into the soil after falling onto the surface of the ground is called infiltration.

An aquifer is the underground layer of permeable rock which contains water that has seeped in from the surface.

Water Management

Water management is the effective utilisation of water or managing water resources carefully. Water can be managed in the following ways:

1. Drip Irrigation: The process of pouring water into the roots of plants using narrow tubes is called Drip Irrigation.

2. Rainwater Harvesting: The collection of rainwater and using it effectively for other purposes is known as rainwater harvesting.

Ocean Dumping

The term ‘Ocean Dumping’ refers to mixing the solid and liquid wastes from various sources into the ocean water. These waste materials contain some harmful elements which pollute the ocean water.

The major cause of Ocean Dumping is mixing residuals from the factory’s households into the nearby water bodies. These water bodies mix with ocean rising Ocean Dumping. Opening sewers in the oceans also causes Ocean Dumping. Spilling of oil from large oil tankers in Ocean brings Ocean Dumping as well. Apart from these, there are many other reasons.

Ocean Dumping has a very hazardous effect. It pollutes the water and makes it poison. The marine animals living in it suffocate and suffer to survive. It affects biodiversity and also makes the water not suitable to use by polluting it.

Ocean Dumping is not less than a threat to life on earth. It is never fruitful so we should try our best to stop and remove it as soon as possible.
