Motivational Quotes for the PhD Journey

phd best quotes

The PhD journey is a long one where it’s easy and normal to feel unmotivated for certain stretches of time. We all need a little inspiration to perk us up during those days. Jenny Mak offers you four handy motivational quotes for when the going gets tough during your PhD…

“Success requires Action”

We all procrastinate. It’s something that is easy to do especially at the beginning of your PhD when it feels like you have a lot of time. But to be successful—by this I mean successfully finishing and submitting your thesis—it’s not enough to say that you want a PhD, you also have to do the work. Doing the work means sitting down at your desk, butt firmly stuck to chair, and just doing it. It helps to set yourself concrete goals like writing 500 words a day, and trying your best to meet that target every day.

“Progress, not Perfection”

Perfectionism often gets confused with having high standards. For me, this has meant that I’d revised a chapter countless times before sending it to my supervisors for feedback because I felt that it just wasn’t right. But here’s the problem: the “right” version doesn’t exist. It’s an illusion—painfully shattered when you get back said chapter with lots of critical comments from your supervisor. Conversely, something that you think is “average” might actually be good enough for your supervisor. It’s good to have high standards, but don’t kill yourself over them. “Good enough” tends to be good enough. Check out Petra Kolber’s TED talk titled “The Perfection Detox” for some sharp insights into the perils of perfectionism.

“Eat the Elephant one bite at a time”

I don’t remember where I heard this quote. But it came handy in the late stages of my PhD when I felt tired and frustrated that no matter how much and how fast I was writing and revising, there still seemed to be no end in sight. Finishing a thesis can feel like having a huge elephant in front of you that you’re supposed to eat in its entirety. Of course, if you mainly focus on how massive this elephant is and when you can finish eating it up, you will feel overwhelmed. But if you take the elephant bite by bite, and not think about how much of it is left, one day the elephant will be all gone. The same goes for your thesis: break it down to small actionable tasks and do one task after another, until it is done and ready for submission.

“Enjoy Climbing the Mountain”

Doing a PhD is extremely challenging work. While we do it for the intellectual stimulation, sometimes we might wonder: why do we put ourselves through such difficulty? If you need a reminder of why you have chosen to do this, here is a quote by Tadashi Yanai , the founder of Uniqlo, which I have found helpful: “I’m never really satisfied with anything because the world is ever-changing. If you keep climbing up, then you see another, higher mountain. You climb up that peak and see another. I will pass away eventually because that is life. But I am climbing mountains because I enjoy the process of climbing a mountain.”

Whenever I feel like want to give up on my PhD, I always remember one beautiful quotes from Alex Wassabi that he mentioned in one of his vlog. His quote sounds like this: ” We know what will happen if we give up, but we don’t know what will happen if we don’t”.

Excellent, motivational!

PhD is tough, and many that graduated from one can tell you the difficulties and challenges. These graduates also may have many nuggets of wisdom to share with those that are in the middle of the journey.

In this post, we share a couple of quotes about PhD studies. Some are funny, while some are pure motivational gem to push you through the tough times.

Funny PhD Quotes

25 of the Best Motivational Quotes from Scientists

We’ve been posting motivational science quotes every Monday for a couple of years now. Why do we do it, you ask? Because we love digging into the wisdom of scientists past and present, reminding ourselves why the work we do is so important. And we love being able to pass on these little nuggets of optimism and motivation as we find them.

When we interview scientists for our blog , as well as asking them for their favorite science jokes , as we also ask what their favorite science quotes are.

We’ve had so many brilliant ones shared with us, so we wanted to collect our top 25 into one great big inspirational blog for you. Bookmark this page for whenever you feel like life in the lab is getting you down.

1. “Everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done.” – Robert A. Heinlein.

“Although from a sci-fi book, I think it captures the spirit of the scientific frontier,” says Martyn Webb , who’s studying for his PhD at the University of East Anglia.

2. “The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or to understand something. Nothing can compare with that experience.” – Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin

We’re sure every passionate early career researcher will agree! Thank you Dr Deborah Kronenberg-Versteeg from the University of Cambridge for sharing this beautiful quote from the British-born American astronomer and astrophysicist (who proposed in her 1925 doctoral thesis that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium).

3. “What you learn from a life in science is the vastness of our ignorance.” – David Eagleman

Next time you feel pressure to know everything, remember this quote that Dr Laura Boddington shared with us. Knowing everything is impossible, don’t let imposter syndrome take hold!

4. "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." – Issac Newton

Kate Manley , part of the Prostate Cancer Genetics Team at the University of East Anglia, reminds us of the importance of acknowledging all the scientists whose discoveries have made our current work possible.

5. “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” – Albert Einstein

Thanks to James Cleland , PhD Fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, for making this our favourite retort to: “Are you going to clean that up?”

6. "Our virtues and our failures are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more.” – Nikola Tesla

It’s important to remember that failure is not only an inevitable part of life, it’s an inevitable part of success. Thank you Lab Heroes Runner-Up Elisabeth Paul , soon-to-be PhD Student at Linköping University, for sharing this.

Thank you to Lab Heroes Runner-Up Ettore Ambrosini , a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Padova, for this mantra for those days when nothing feels possible. There is always a way!

8. “In science the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to the man to whom the idea first occurs.” – Sir William Osler

Just because you aren’t the first person to do it, doesn’t mean it’s not hugely important. Thank you to Lab Heroes Winner Dr Enitome Bafor from the University of Benin for the reminder that there’s always a new way to see, understand, and communicate things.

9. “Every brilliant experiment, like every great work of art, starts with an act of imagination.” – Jonah Lehrer

23. “The important thing is to never stop questioning [or learning].” – Albert Einstein

The PhD system is the real root of the evil of academic snobbery. People who have PhDs consider themselves a priesthood, and inventors generally don't have PhDs.

I started a PhD in English at the University of Chicago because I loved poetry-which I now realize is like saying I studied vivisection because I loved dogs.

When God gets ready to shake America, He may not take the Ph.D. and the D.D. God may choose a country boy ... God may choose the man that no one knows, a little nobody, to shake America for Jesus Christ in this day, and I pray that He would!

I was in the second year of my PhD when I first had the idea - I'd recently started working as a translator, which meant firstly that I was hearing about amazing-sounding books from other translators, and also that I was getting enough of an insider's view of the publishing industry to be aware of all the implicit biases that made it so difficult for these books to ever get published, especially if they weren't from European languages (harder to discover, editors can't read the original, lack of funding programmes, authors who don't speak English).

Once you have a PhD, every meeting you go to becomes a doctor's appointment.

The rule is: the word 'it's' (with apostrophe) stands for 'it is' or 'it has'. If the word does not stand for 'it is' or 'it has' then what you require is 'its'. This is extremely easy to grasp. Getting your itses mixed up is the greatest solecism in the world of punctuation. No matter that you have a PhD and have read all of Henry James twice. If you still persist in writing, 'Good food at it's best', you deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave.

The darkest days in my life after the war, after the war, was when I discovered that the ... most of the members and commanders of the Einsatz group that were doing the killings, not even in gas chambers, but killing with machine guns, had college degrees from German universities and PhD's and MD's. Couldn't believe it.

The PhD student is someone who forgoes current income in order to forgo future income.

BS is just what it stands for, an MS is More of the Same, and a PhD is Piled Higher and Deeper.

Don't worry about meaning. If a story's any good, it can't help but have meaning. Let the PhDs tell you what your story means.

As a person of color, you're in a PhD level racism class, every day. Every day, I'm in a deep racism seminar. And I'm not saying that white people aren't taking that class, but they don't show up that often and they're auditing it.

I have concluded that most PhD economists under appraise the power of the common-stock-based "wealth effect," under current extreme conditions... "Wealth effects" involve mathematical puzzles that are not nearly so well worked out as physics theories and never can be... What has happened in Japan over roughly the last ten years has shaken up academic economics, as it obviously should, creating strong worries about recession from "wealth effects" in reverse.

I have students who are PhDs in music who come back and scored the music and teach the kids the instruments that I don't know how to play. Those are the points of light, the former students.

It’s irrelevant to me what young Singaporeans think of me. What they think of me after I’m dead and gone in one generation will be determined by researchers who do PhDs on me, right? So there will be a lot of revisionism. As people revised Stalin, Brezhnev and one day now Yeltsin, and later on Putin. I’ve lived long enough to know that you may be idealised in life and reviled after you’re dead.

For me, my discomfort with gay weddings was articulated by a close friend, who observed that gay people getting married is like retarded people getting together to give each other PhDs. It doesn't make them smarter, and it doesn't make us married.

I was trained to become an economist and I finished my work and I was teaching and did my PhD so I thought I did that. I prepared myself for that kind of road. But then I realized that I had not learned enough to solve the problem of poverty. So I distanced myself from the things that I learned and tried to learn anew about people.

If you're, like, a PhD student in English, and you look at each instance that Richard Yates is mentioned in the book...it has sort of it's own narrative that one could analyze and write literary criticism about.

I do teach fiction and non-fiction, and usually I'm interested in works that confuse genre, but I'm very new to teaching creative writing, I don't have an MFA, or a PhD, I tend to approach it just through my own practice.

I got my MBA at Burberry, but I will get my PhD at Apple.

My first job was actually as a social worker. And then later, I got my PhD in anthropology. And I've always been interested in humans as well as primates. We are all kind of have the same emotions, the same goals and lives really. But to me, when I first got to Madagascar I realized that the lemurs lives are very closely related to what the humans are doing; partially because they've got both looking for natural resources. And if we can make some way that both humans and lemurs can live together peaceably and happily, that would be my goal for Madagascar.

A PhD in Mathematics is three years of guessing it wrong, plus one week of getting it right and writing a dissertation.

...60 advocates of unorthodox therapies whose credentials are given in the ACS book (above).(:) Of these 60, thirty-nine or almost two-thirds, hold...medical degrees from such universities as Harvard, Illinois, Northwestern, Yale, Dublin, Oxford, or Toronto. Two are osteopaths. 3...also hold...(PhD's)....scientific....reputable....8 others received PhD's in such fields as chemistry, physiology, bacteriology, parasitology, or medical physics, from...Yale, Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, Columbia, and NYU. Thus over 75%...are medical doctors or doctors of philosophy in scientific areas.

Librarians are essential players in the information revolution because they level that field. They enable those without money or education to read and learn the same things as the billionaire and the PhD.

Attaining a PhD is just an excuse that all young women are using nowadays to avoid starting families.

Inspiring Quotes for Stress Management in PhD Studies

Inspiring Quotes for Stress Management in PhD Studies

Stress Management for PhD Students: Finding Inner Peace Through Inspiring Quotes

Pursuing a PhD is no easy feat. It requires a significant amount of time, effort, and dedication. Along with the challenges of coursework and research, PhD students often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout. However, stress is not an inevitable part of the PhD journey, and it is possible to manage it effectively with the right tools and techniques. In this post, we’ll explore some inspiring quotes that can help PhD students to cope with stress and find inner peace.

  • “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” – William James
“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” William James

One of the most important aspects of stress management is learning to control our thoughts and emotions. We can’t always control the circumstances that cause stress, but we can choose how we react to them. This quote by psychologist William James emphasizes the power of choice and the importance of taking control of our thoughts. When we find ourselves becoming overwhelmed with stress, it can be helpful to pause, take a deep breath, and choose to focus on positive thoughts instead.

  • “Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency.” – Natalie Goldberg
“Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency.” Natalie Goldberg

Stress often arises from a sense of urgency and a feeling that we must constantly be doing something. However, this perspective is not accurate or helpful. Stress is often a result of our own thoughts and beliefs, and it’s important to recognize that not everything is an emergency. This quote by Natalie Goldberg highlights the ignorance of stress and reminds us to step back and evaluate our thoughts and priorities.

80 Empowering Graduation Quotes You Need to Hear

inspirational graduation quotes

Last Updated on February 22, 2024

Table of Contents

Graduation plays a powerful part in so many people’s lives. For those who have experienced it, it’s a point of pride.

For those who will, it’s a promise.

When one thinks of graduation, the first thing that comes to mind is likely visions of diplomas and caps being tossed into the sky. Movies love to portray this occasion so distinctly that they’ve defined everyone’s expectations of the “perfect” graduation ceremony.

For the most part, yes, graduations do involve a lot of cheering, a lot of triumph, and a lot of tossing items with reckless abandon. And, hey, graduates have earned the right to do so.

But graduation also brings about a flood of emotions. Some good, some bad, but all of them confusing.

Here’s why.

Ups and Downs of Graduation

It’s celebration time.

inspirational graduation quotes

  • I made it. You just finished a huge chapter of your life—one that was fraught with challenges at every turn. That pride you’re feeling is well-deserved.
  • I’m stronger than I thought. School can be overwhelming, but you made it in one piece and you never gave up.
  • It’s a new chapter. You’re about to step into a completely new stage of your life—one where you are defined by more than the letters on a report card.

So, What Now?

inspirational graduation quotes

  • What does the future hold? For some, the future is a bright, promising light on the edge of the horizon. For others, it’s a hint of brightness at the end of a twisting, dimly lit path. What is life after graduation? It’s both opportunity and unknown.
  • It’s too big a change. Maybe you’re not ready to leave school behind yet. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is a lot like popping your personal bubble . That’s much easier said than done.
  • What if I don’t make it? Fear of failure. No matter how old you are, this fear is always present—and always valid.

The Journey

inspirational graduation quotes

In a 2019 Medium article, entrepreneur and growth executive Ted Gonder shares his experiences—and revelations— regarding life after graduation .

He states how different reality was after graduation, especially when juxtaposed against his expectations. He admits to wanting to tell his younger self some of the insights he’s picked up since then, if given the chance.

One of these is the importance of managing our own psychology. By understanding human nature and learning useful mental exercises to calm our nerves and avoid entertaining unnecessary concerns, we’ll be better equipped to handle the “real world.”

We can learn how to step outside ourselves, take on different perspectives, and weigh options objectively. This, in turn, will help us accept scenarios as they are, not as we perceive them to be.

In other words, don’t be afraid of being afraid. Don’t feel guilty for feeling excitement. The future you’re either fearful of or excited for is your future, so you’re allowed to feel whatever you want. If you’re buzzing with positive anticipation, good. You should be.

You’re a fresh graduate—the world is yours for the taking. If you’re anxious or nervous, also good. That’s normal. It means you’ll be cautious about every step you take.

Still not convinced that your feelings are valid? Maybe these graduation quotes will help:

Screen Rant

The graduate's 10 best quotes.

The 1967 coming-of-age masterpiece The Graduate relies on its unforgettable quotes to describe all sides of its comedic love triangle.

  • The Graduate 's authentic dialogue captures the awkward transition from adolescence to adulthood, making it relatable to modern audiences.
  • Benjamin's pursuit of a romantic ideal demonstrates his cluelessness and willingness to abandon logic.
  • The movie depicts a love pentagon and shows the immaturity of older characters, highlighting how they are not as grown-up as they believe themselves to be.

A classic coming-of-age movie, The Graduate is full of memorable quotes. The 1967 film follows Benjamin Braddock as he returns home from college and begins an affair with a friend of his parents. Dustin Hoffman brings a quirky charm to the lead role, but Anne Bancroft's portrayal of the manipulative Mrs. Robinson is just as central to the movie's success. The evergreen Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack roots the story firmly in the 1960s, but The Graduate stands the test of time.

One of the reasons The Graduate can still be enjoyed by modern audiences is the authenticity of its dialogue . Adapted from a novel by Charles Webb, the script perfectly captures the awkward period of life between adolescence and true adulthood. Benjamin struggles to articulate his feelings as a supposed success story with nobody to turn to. His parents and the older generation, including Mrs. Robinson, have a much more assured manner of speech.

10 "What makes you think she wants to marry you?" "She doesn't. To be perfectly honest, she doesn't like me."

Mrs. braddock & benjamin braddock.

Benjamin's parents are delighted to hear that he intends to marry Elaine Robinson, but his plan quickly falls apart under the slightest scrutiny. Aside from illustrating the enormous gap in understanding between Benjamin and his parents, this exchange shows just how clueless Benjamin is , willing to abandon all logic in pursuit of a romantic ideal. Dustin Hoffman's deadpan delivery sells the scene perfectly as he stares with a blank, alien detachment, and his parents return his gaze with the appropriate wariness. This scene in the Braddock family kitchen also stands out for Mrs. Braddock's unnecessarily blood-curdling scream of joy when Benjamin tells her his plans.

9 "I want it to be... different."

Benjamin braddock.

Spoken to his father shortly after returning home from college, this quote sums up Benjamin's listless existence . All he knows about his future is that it has to be different from what is expected of him and different from what his parents have. This sentiment from Graduate still holds up today , reflecting the views of many young people. Of course, when Benjamin says this, his father doesn't listen to him. Benjamin can't even reach out to his own parents for guidance. They simply usher him downstairs to show off his achievements in front of their friends, as if they see him as just one more impressive accessory to their lives.

8 "Do you have any luggage Mr. Gladstone?"

Benjamin's paranoia causes him to give a fake name at the hotel where he meets Mrs. Robinson. Everything about his meeting with Mrs. Robinson is illicit and shady , and Benjamin is hilariously awkward throughout. He never even refers to Mrs. Robinson by her first name, underlining the formality of the whole situation. With its depiction of a young man's affair with an older married woman, The Graduate represents a revolution in American cinema. The movie seems keenly aware of how scandalous it is. There's no indication where Benjamin drew the name "Mr. Gladstone," from but it certainly sounds like it belongs to an older man.

7 "I can see in the dark, you know. I've been here quite a while."

Mr. robinson.

Mr. Robinson is the forgotten victim of Benjamin's affair with Mrs. Robinson. The Graduate's love triangle focuses on Benjamin's feelings for both Elaine and her mother, but it's more of a love pentagon with the inclusion of Mr. Robinson and Elaine's fiancé, Carl. When Mr. Robinson confronts Benjamin, he betrays the fact that he has been sitting alone in the dark for a long time, presumably steeping in his own bitterness . It's a brief moment that shows the barely concealed immaturity of the older characters. Mr. Robinson and others would like to believe they are far more grown up than Benjamin, but they are still prone to childish rage.

6 "Is that so? You might marry me?"

Benjamin's pursuit of Elaine at Berkeley can come across as creepy to modern audiences, but the pair still shares undeniably tender moments. Elaine initially rebuffs Benjamin's proposal, but it's clear that she's more interested in him than the man she is supposed to marry. E laine and Benjamin provide an escape for each other , partly because each one of them is explicitly forbidden from pursuing their relationship. The Graduate captures the mood of the 1960s with its portrayal of two young people trying to defy the rigid expectations of their parents. This intimate scene perfectly exemplifies the comfort they share when they are left alone.

5 "You're disappointing them, Ben. You're disappointing them."

Mr. braddock.

Mr. Braddock buys Benjamin a scuba suit for his birthday, but he makes sure that everyone at the party knows just how generous he is, proudly stating that it cost more than $200. Instead of being out in the open ocean, Benjamin is forced to demonstrate his new gift in the pool in his backyard with his whole family watching and cheering. He's essentially paraded around like a child. His parents smile as they push his head back underwater, and he's left alone at the bottom of the pool, mirroring the plastic scuba diver that sits in the fish tank in his childhood bedroom.

4 "I just want to say one word to you... just one word... are you listening? Plastics."

Mr. mcguire.

When Benjamin's parents throw him a graduation party consisting of all their friends and none of his, Mr. McGuire pulls him aside to try and tempt him into a career in plastics. His dramatic delivery suggests that, in his mind, this is a revolutionary idea that Benjamin will immediately love. In truth, Benjamin is not so enthralled by the prospect of working with plastics. There's a fundamental disconnect between Benjamin and the adults around him. He lacks inspiration, and he isn't going to find it by emulating them. His parent's friends are deeply concerned with material possessions and the appearance of wealth, but ultimately, they seem hollow.

3 "I'm not proud that I spend my time with a broken alcoholic."

Benjamin starts out as a blank slate. He's very passive because he doesn't really know what he wants out of life. His verbal attack on Mrs. Robinson marks a shift in his character before he starts taking control of his future. Until this moment, Benjamin is content to merely bob along as adults around him try to make his decisions. His words here are meant to hurt, but not because he dislikes Mrs. Robinson in particular. It's more that she has just told him not to contact Elaine. Benjamin finds some form of sanctuary with Mrs. Robinson, but now he sees that even she wants to control his actions.

2 "It's too late!" "Not for me."

Mrs. robinson & elaine robinson.

Mrs. Robinson desperately tries to stop her daughter from running away with Benjamin, but Elaine makes her own decision. Mrs. Robinson tells Benjamin earlier that she felt pressured into marrying her husband after she became pregnant with Elaine in the back of a Ford. She resents her daughter for representing the prison she finds herself living in, and her impassioned plea for Elaine to stay at the church suggests that she perceives Elaine's choice to pursue her own freedom as an injustice . These are the last words spoken in the movie, before The Graduate 's famous ending on the bus as Elaine and Benjamin's smiles slowly fade.

1 "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me... aren't you?"

The most iconic and enduring quote from The Graduate is " Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me... aren't you? " At this point, Benjamin is too old to be a child but too inexperienced to truly feel like an adult. He bluffs confidence but still needs the reassurance of someone older than him. This exchange underlines the uneasy power dynamic between Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson . She's happy to sit back and tease him, almost coaxing him into this bold statement with her demure act. Mrs. Robinson frequently wears animal prints, representing the freedom and danger that initially attracts Benjamin. In this scene, she sits and watches him like a predator.

Mason’s doctor of nursing practice program ranked No. 1 among public institutions—up 27 spots from last year—and No. 2 among institutions nationally—up 37 spots. The nursing master’s program came in at No. 4 (up 17 spots) for public universities and No. 10 (up 28) nationally.

The master of public health program also jumped ahead 23 spots to become No. 53 nationally among all institutions, and 35th among publics.  The social work program is 47th among public institutions, and the heath systems management program is 17th among public institutions and 32nd nationally. Mason is home to Virginia’s first College of Public Health .

"At Mason, our focus is clear: to foster excellence and innovation in public health education, research, and practice,” said College of Public Health Dean Melissa Perry. “As the pioneering College of Public Health in Virginia, we are setting the standard for interprofessional education in this vital field. Our programs are designed to equip the next generation of health professionals with the knowledge and skills to address the complex health challenges of our time."

Overall this year, Mason has 21 graduate programs in the top 50 among public universities and 14 programs in the top 50 of all universities nationally. (All U.S. News graduate program rankings, including previous years, are available here .)

Antonin Scalia Law School ’ s law program advanced to No. 11 among public schools and No. 28 among all law schools nationally. With this move, it ranks third among all law schools in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland. The part-time program ranks second nationally among all public law schools.

“The law school achieved the highest ranking in the school’s history at No. 28,” said Scalia Law Dean Ken Randall. “The part-time JD program remains among the top five nationally. Despite its relative youth, Scalia is ranked No. 3 among the 16 law schools in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland, behind only UVA and Georgetown.”

The College of Education and Human Development ’s special education program gained ground as well, coming in at No. 16 for publics (up one) and No. 17 for all institutions (up two).

“We are so proud of our special education program,” said Dean Ingrid Guerra-L ó pez. “This recognition affirms our commitment to excellence, innovation, and the belief that every individual has the potential to make a meaningful impact in the world. It is a testament to our faculty, staff, and students, who work tirelessly to push boundaries and inspire change.”

The Schar School of Policy and Government is 4th in homeland security both nationally and among publics. The school ranks 39th nationally overall and 26th among publics for public affairs; 10th among publics for nonprofit management (13th nationally); 33 nationally and 24 among publics for public management and leadership; and No. 31 nationally and No. 17 among publics for public policy analysis.

“These rankings are affirmation of the strong quality of the Schar School’s academic programs and cutting-edge research,” said Schar School Dean Mark Rozell. “The continued growth in the rankings aligns to the value proposition that Schar provides to students and career-seekers located in the Washington, D.C., region, offering direct access to leaders, news makers, policy advocates, and amazing faculty expertise.”

“Mason has made significant investments in graduate education and the latest U.S. News rankings reflect our commitment to excellence as well as reaffirm the quality and hard work of our faculty, students, and staff,” Interim Provost Ken Walsh said. “I’m proud that our teaching and learning is recognized, as well as the impact of research and scholarship these programs produce.”

In 2022, Mason launched its Graduate Division, expanding student support services and creating a dedicated graduate success center,  to increase graduate funding for programs. New professional development programs, such as the Accelerate to Industry program, the Graduate Student Career Conference, the Communication Academy four-part performance workshop series, and a Skillcraft Series for graduate teaching through the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, offer students a roadmap combining their academic learning with work-readiness skills.

U.S. News announced April 8 that they would delay the release of Engineering School rankings and rankings for Clinical Psychology programs, as well as Medical School rankings.

The complete rankings released on Tuesday, April 9, can be found on the U.S. News and World Report website .

The 10 Best Gus Fring Quotes in 'Breaking Bad,' Ranked

Gus Fring was the coldest drug dealer alive.

Narcotics distributor and "chicken man" Gus Fring, played wonderfully by Giancarlo Esposito , quickly became one of Breaking Bad 's most memorable characters from his first appearance near the end of Season 2. The series followed high-school chemistry teacher Walter White ( Bryan Cranston ) as he began making crystal meth to make money to leave for his family after being diagnosed with inoperable Stage 3 lung cancer and given just two years to live. Gus was the show's most formidable villain as a major drug kingpin and owner of fried-chicken franchise Los Pollos Hermanos, a front for his drug enterprise, and he was known for his quiet yet commanding demeanor. Esposito reprized his role as Gus for the prequel series Better Call Saul .

Fring was a menacing presence on the show, something that came through in his best quotes. He was a man of few words, but that only meant he chose his words carefully and made what he did say that much more powerful, whether he was using them to manipulate or was giving Walter advice. His best quotes also offered some insight into his character, and there was typically a hint of brutality lurking just beneath the surface, especially as his time on the show neared its end.

Breaking Bad

10 "what kind of man talks to the dea no man. no man at all. a crippled little rata. what a reputation to leave behind.", season 4, episode 13, "face off".

After disarming and disconnecting a bomb they had connected to Gus’ car in order to kill him, Walt and Jesse came up with a new plan in “Face Off.” Walt turned to Hector Salamanca for help and promised him revenge against Gus, then rigged his wheelchair with a bomb. Gus, believing wrongly that Hector contacted the DEA to work as an informant, confronted Hector, and Hector detonated the bomb, killing both of them.

One of Gus’ most memorable quotes stands out less because of what he said and more because of how it played out . Gus was always fueled by his hatred for Hector, and his feelings only intensified when he believed Hector had spoken to the DEA—and he took advantage of the opportunity to insult Hector. It was fitting as one of Gus’ final moments, from his longstanding hatred of Hector to his familiar demeanor and delivery.

9 “If you try to interfere, this becomes a much simpler matter. I will kill your wife. I will kill your son. I will kill your infant daughter.”

Season 4, episode 11, "crawl space".

In “Crawl Space,” Jesse drove Mike and Gus to a makeshift hospital after both were injured in an altercation with the cartel—Mike with gunshot wounds and Gus suffering from the effects of a self-administered poison. Both were treated and recovered. Meanwhile, Walt begged Jesse not to cook alone, as Walt would be killed if he was thought to be unneeded, but Jesse refused. Walt was then taken to meet with Gus in the desert.

Like Gus’ final moments with Hector, his threat to Walt was memorable not so much because of what he said, but because of how he said it, and because it was a quintessential Gus moment . Walt knew how brutal Gus could be but was on the receiving end of it this time, and there was no doubt that Gus would follow through on his threats if Walt didn’t do as he was told.

8 "I don't think we're alike at all, Mr. White. You are not a cautious man at all. Your partner was late, and he was high. You have poor judgment."

Season 2, episode 11, "mandala".

Gus made his first appearance in “Mandala.” After Combo was killed, Skinny Pete decided to quit the drug trade, which forced Walt and Jesse to look elsewhere for their distribution needs. Saul connected them with Gus, and they were scheduled to meet him at Los Pollos Hermanos, the fast-food restaurant he owned, but Jesse arrived late and high, which was off-putting to Gus and led him to skip the meeting. Walt later returned and spoke with him.

Gus’ first appearance in Breaking Bad was a memorable one . When Walt first met with him, his demeanor quickly changed from a charming, pleasant businessman to the menacing drug kingpin he proved to be as the series continued. While Walt was trying to point out their similarities, Gus disagreed and was critical of what he felt was Walt’s carelessness. It was also an ironic statement, considering Gus would later often remind Walt of the ways in which they were similar.

7 “I don’t believe fear to be an effective motivator.”

Season 3, episode 4, "green light".

In "Green Light," Walt found out about Skyler’s affair with her boss, Ted, and confronted him at his office, and just as he was being escorted out, Mike drove up and took him to Saul’s office, where he was criticized for behaving so recklessly. But most importantly, things between Walt, Jesse and Gus became more tense, as Gus tried to convince Walt to continue cooking—Gus bought all of Jesse’s supply and gave Walt half the money.

Gus’ comments here about using fear to motivate people seem ironic, considering how he himself operated and was, in fact, a frightening figure. But the quote — much like Gus — wasn’t so simple. It suggested Gus preferred not to use fear as a tactic and found it to be ineffective, and that was clear from some of his other interactions. Better Call Saul later revealed that Gus first heard this statement from Mike.

6 "This is what comes with blood for blood."

Season 4, episode 8, "hermanos".

In a flashback set just after the attack on Hank, Gus visits Hector in “Hermanos” and hints that he was the one who orchestrated the killings of Leonel and Marco Salamanca, as well as Juan Bolsa. The episode also addressed Gus’ past and his partnership with a chemist named Max and how Max’s death impacted Gus and made him who he was. Meanwhile, Hank had evidence that Gus was an Albuquerque drug kingpin and questioned him.

Gus had some choice words for Hector in “Hermanos.” To Gus, killing and ordering hits were just aspects of the drug trade that were to be expected, and that sometimes, killings were carried out in revenge for others. Gus’ words to Hector hinted that the deaths of people he cared about were a consequence of crossing Gus, the price Hector had to pay for his actions, and they were all the more powerful with the added context of Gus’ history with Max.

5 "I hide in plain sight. Same as you."

Season 3, episode 8, "i see you".

In “I See You,” Jesse was released from the hospital after being beaten by Hank, while Hank was admitted after he got into a shootout with Tuco’s cousins in the parking lot. Walt focused on spending time with his family rather than cooking meth, and Gus paid them a visit while Hank was still recovering. The attack on Hank, a DEA agent, also led the Mexican government to watch the border more closely.

Gus’ statement was an accurate description of his character and how he operated throughout the series . By all outward appearances, Gus was a reputable, upstanding, successful business owner, and he could even be warm and charming when the occasion called for it. But in reality, he ran a successful meth business, and he could be a cruel, brutal man in his work. Gus also made it a point to highlight the similarities between himself and Walt.

4 "I investigate everyone with whom I do business. What careful man wouldn't?"

Hank was in grave condition in “Green Light” after being shot multiple times by Tuco’s cousins, and Walt rushed to join his family at the hospital, where Marie blamed him for the shooting. Walt’s time with his family pulled him away from cooking meth. Meanwhile, Juan Bolsa accused Gus of ordering the attack on Hank, and Gus paid a visit to the hospital himself, complete with complimentary fried chicken for Hank’s colleagues.

“Green Light” was a great example of Gus’ charm, as well as his approach to his work. But more importantly, some of his best quotes, like his business practices and his character overall, were focused on caution , and that also applied to who he chose to work with. His word choice also suggested that caution was obvious, something which shouldn’t have come as a surprise and something he felt others, such as Walt, should have done, too.

3 "You are a wealthy man now. One must learn to be rich. To be poor, anyone can manage."

Season 3, episode 11, "abiquiu".

In the season three episode “Abiquiu,” Hank was frustrated with the slow pace of his progress in physical therapy after being attacked by the cartel. Skyler became increasingly involved in Walt’s business and revealed she never officially filed for divorce, and the two met with Saul Goodman to come up with a plan to launder money, something he’d helped Walt with in the past. Meanwhile, Gus invited Walt over for dinner and had some important advice for him.

"Abiquiu" featured these words of wisdom about wealth from Gus as Walter’s business became more lucrative. They hint at Gus’ own transition into wealth , but more importantly, they touch on what a difference wealth can make for a person and what that transition can be like, especially if it’s not a lifestyle they’re used to. On the contrary, according to Gus, anyone can handle struggling with money and make it work.

2 “Never make the same mistake twice.”

In “Abiquiu,” Skyler and Walter turned to Saul for help laundering money, and Jesse got involved with a woman in his support group in order to sell drugs to her, but he hesitated when he found out she had a young child. He also learned her brother killed Combo as part of a gang initiation. Meanwhile, Gus invited Walter over to his home for dinner, where the two cooked a Chilean meal and Gus offered Walter some advice regarding his role in the drug world.

Gus’ advice to Walter continued in “Abiquiu" with this statement about making mistakes. They worked in a business with little room for error , and it was crucial to learn from mistakes and move on rather than repeat them. Gus wasn’t just giving vague advice, though. He was also alluding to Walter’s partnership with Jesse and suggesting that Walter not repeat the mistake of working with Jesse, as well as hinting at the way he handled his own business.

1 "When you have children, you always have family. They will always be your priority, your responsibility, and a man - a man provides. And he does it even when he's not appreciated or respected or even loved. He simply bears up, and he does it because he's a man."

Season 3, episode 5, "más ".

Skyler reconsidered her position on Walter living at home in “Más,” while Hank looked for Jesse’s RV. Walter and Jesse argued over money Gus gave Walter for meth Jesse had sold him, with Jesse mad he only got half and Walter mad Jesse was using his formula. Meanwhile, Gus tries to convince Walter to work under him by showing off his lab, and although Walter initially declines Gus’ offer, he later agrees.

Gus commented on family in “Más” when he was trying to win over Walter, noting that having children means one always has family, even if they don’t have a close relationship, and that children should always be a priority. His comments also touched on Walter’s motivation for getting in the drug business, to provide for his family, and how it’s a parent’s responsibility, even if it’s unappreciated, because it’s part of their role.
