The Doctoral Program in Mathematics

This page mainly collects legal and organizational information on the doctoral program at the University of Vienna. There is a joint doctoral school of the University of Vienna and the TU Wien, called the Vienna School of Mathematics (VSM). Membership in this school is automatic for students that are hired on a pre-doc position announced via the VSM, for other students, membership is possible upon admission of the advisor.

The current relevant curriculum for a doctoral studies in mathematics is the "Doktoratsstudium der Naturwissenschaften und der technischen Wissenschaften". The current version of the curriculum is available here , but this is mainly for reference (it is in German and mainly contains formal regulations). 

The regular duration of the doctoral studies according to the curriculum is 3 years, but this is to be viewed as a guideline. The main formal prerequisite for the doctoral program is a completed master program in mathematics or equivalent background. The prerequisites for the doctoral program will be checked during the admission process, both from a formal and from a scientific point of view. The admission to all programs at the University of Vienna is handled by the central administration of the University and in our case the rules of the curriculum are uniform for all natural sciences. More information on the admission to doctoral programs can be found on this page of the Center for Doctoral Studies , which is the main point of contact concerning admission. In particular, for the admission process, you will need a confirmation of supervision from a faculty member who is capable of supervising PhD theses — so you will have to find an advisor before you can apply for admission. You will also have to provide a description of a PhD project. In our area, a rough description of the direction to be pursued during the doctoral studies usually is sufficient — please check with your (intended) advisor on this.

The doctoral program is structured in three phases, the entry phase , the research phase and the final phase .

• The purpose of the entry phase is to formulate (jointly with your advisor) a concrete topic or project for your PhD studies. This phase should be completed within a year of starting with a public presentation of the thesis project in front of the Doctoral Advisory Board of the Faculty of Mathematics. Currently, the talks in the presentation are scheduled for 20 minutes with a subsequent discussion of up to 10 minutes. They should be accessible for a broader (mathematical) audience. In preparation, the candidate has to formulate, usually jointly with the supervisor, a research proposal that outlines the project. The aim of this presentation is to show that there is a plan for the project and how this fits into the scientific landscape rather than to provide scientific details. The public presentations take place several times per semester and are widely announced. If you and your supervisor agree that you are getting close to the presentation, please send a mail to ssc.mathematik @ univie.ac.at containing the names of the student and supervisor(s) as well as a working title for the thesis project, stating that you will be interested in presenting in the near future. This help us in planning presentations and makes sure that you and your advisor will be involved in finding dates, etc. Via the SSC, you will also be informed about the forms needed to register for the presentation.
• After a successful presentation, the thesis project is formally approved by the DSPL (" Doktoratsstuidenprogrammleiter "), who is the main person responsible for the Doctoral Program. Based on their approval and support of the DSPL, the student and the supervisor(s) formulate and sign a dissertation agreement (" Dissertationsvereinbarung ") that contains the main information about the thesis project. You will be provided with the necessary forms after your successful presentation. The dissertation agreement also contains information about the coursework that has to be completed during the Doctoral Program. Before that agreement is signed, no decision can be made about the acknowledgement of courses. Please consult your supervisor when choosing courses during the entry phase of your studies.
• Signing the dissertation agreement marks the beginning of the research phase of studies, during which the main academic activities are carried out. Apart from 24 ECTS of course work (for which specifications may be formulated in the dissertation agreement), the main task is the preparation of a monographic thesis. During the research phase, yearly progress reports , which form a part of the dissertation agreement, have to be provided.
• Completion of the thesis marks the start of the final phase of the doctoral program. If your thesis is getting close to completion, please inform us via mail to ssc.mathematik @ univie.ac.at so that things can be well coordinated as soon as possible. This is also a good time to read the more-detailed information on the final phase that is available here . The student and the supervisor(s) have to suggest three international experts on the topic of the thesis, who agree to take on the role of being  referees . Via the DSPL, this suggestion is passed to the " Studienpräses " of the University of Vienna, who is responsible for the selection of two referees. The referees have to be contacted via the SSC to continue the process of announcing the public defense of the thesis, which is the final step in the doctoral studies that is coordinated via the SSC.

Admission and prerequisites

The prerequisite for admission to a doctoral programme at TU Wien is either

• successful completion of a relevant master's, teacher training or other appropriate degree programme,
• successful completion of an equivalent degree programme at an accredited tertiary educational institution in or out of Austria or
• successful completion of a relevant degree or master's programme from a technical college in accordance with § 6 Para. 4 Fachhochschulstudiengesetz [Technical Colleges Act],
• Supervision assurance of a full or associate Professor of TU Wien.

The doctoral programme usually lasts for six semesters.  In addition to the dissertation, the current standardised programme for doctoral students stipulates that a total of 180 ECTS of modules (162 ECTS of which are the dissertation) must be completed.  More detailed information regarding this selection can be found in the programme. Examinations taken as part of a master's or other degree programme cannot be recognised for this. The doctoral programme is assessed in the viva voce, a general examination by a committee involving defence of the dissertation by the candidate.  Graduates of a doctorate in the technical sciences are awarded the title of Doktor/in der Technischen Wissenschaften (Dr. techn.), graduates of a doctorate in the natural sciences are awarded the title of Doktor/in der Naturwissenschaften (Dr. rer. nat.) and graduates of a doctorate in the social and economic sciences are awarded the title of Doktor/in der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften (Dr.rer.soc.oec.).

The doctoral program in Mathematics offers candidates, through concrete research projects, the opportunity to deepen their mathematical knowledge and to develop the necessary skills for independent scientific work. The main outcome of this program is the final thesis, which should contain new scientific results in the chosen area of research.

To be admitted to the PhD program, a Master's or equivalent degree in Mathematics or Statistics with good or excellent grade is required.

Doctoral students at the Mathematical Institute from the University of Bern can participate in the Swiss Doctoral Program in Mathematics , which is organized in collaboration with the mathematical departments of the universities of Basel, Fribourg, Neuchatel, Geneva and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.

The doctoral program consists mainly of independent scientific work.

The candidates have the opportunity to present their findings at conferences and workshops.

They work as assistants, providing support for the lectures organized by the institute.

The standard time for the PhD program is 3-4 years.

Application and admission

To be admitted to the PhD program, a Master's or equivalent degree in Mathematics or Statistics with good or excellent grade is required. There are different admission requirements for applicants with a Swiss degree and applicants with an international degree.

Bewerbung und Zulassung

Um zu einem Doktoratsprogramm zugelassen zu sein, muss der Kandidat /die Kandidatin einen Master (oder gleichwertigen Abschluss) in Mathematik oder Statistik haben mit gutem bis ausgezeichnetem Abschluss. Es gelten unterschiedliche Zulassungsbedingungen für Bewerbende mit einem Schweizer Studienausweis und für Bewerbende mit einem internationalen Studienausweis.

Voraussetzung

Nachweis der Allgemeinen Universitätsreife :

Die allgemeine Universitätsreife für die Zulassung zu einem Doktoratsstudium ist mit Ausnahme von § 64 Abs. 5 UG 2002 durch den Abschluss eines fachlich in Frage kommenden Diplomstudiums oder Masterstudiums oder eines anderen fachlich in Frage kommenden Studiums mindestens desselben hochschulischen Bildungsniveaus an einer anerkannten inländischen oder ausländischen postsekundären Bildungseinrichtung nachzuweisen. Zum Ausgleich wesentlicher fachlicher Unterschiede können Ergänzungsprüfungen vorgeschrieben werden, die bis zum Ende des zweiten Semesters des Doktoratsstudiums abzulegen sind .

Das Rektorat kann festlegen, welche dieser Ergänzungsprüfungen Voraussetzung für die Ablegung von im Curriculum des Doktoratsstudiums vorgesehenen Prüfungen sind.

Module und Dissertation

Qualifikationsprofil und kompetenzen.

Das Hauptziel des Doktoratsstudiums Mathematik liegt in der selbstständigen Verfassung einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit auf höchstem internationalen Niveau in einem der an der Fakultät für Mathematik, Informatik und Physik angebotenen Kompetenzgebiete. Diese Arbeit muss die Grenzen des Wissens im jeweiligen Fachbereich erweitern und so zum Fortschritt im Dissertationsfach beitragen.

Erreicht wird dieses Ziel durch die Absolvierung der im Curriculum vorgeschriebenen Module, von denen besonders im Modul „Wissenschaftliche Grundlagen/Kernkompetenzen zum Dissertationsthema“ die Voraussetzungen zu forschungsorientierter Themenbehandlung geliefert werden. Der derzeit aktuelle Stand der Forschung wird den Studierenden in den Modulen „Analyse eigener und fremder Forschungsergebnisse“ und „Dissertationsgebiet“ vermittelt. Eine Ergänzung dieser Kompetenzen (etwa Projekt-Management, professionelle Präsentation von wissenschaftlichen Inhalten) gewährleistet das Modul „Generische Kompetenzen“. Nach Abschluss des Doktoratsstudiums Mathematik verfügen die AbsolventInnen über ein systematisches Verständnis ihrer Forschungsdisziplin und beherrschen die Methoden, die in der Forschung im jeweiligen Bereich angewandt werden.

Das Studium wird mit einer Dissertation, die von einem Betreuerteam betreut wird, und der abschließenden kommissionellen Prüfung mit der Verleihung des Titels „Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)“ abgeschlossen.

Erwartete Lernergebnisse

AbsolventInnen sind qualifizierte NachwuchswissenschafterInnen. Sie beherrschen die Methoden, die in der Forschung auf diesem Gebiet angewandt werden und sind in der Lage, diese kritisch zu diskutieren, zu analysieren und weiterzuentwickeln.  NachwuchswissenschafterInnen verfügen über die Kompetenz, substantielle Forschungsvorhaben mit wissenschaftlicher Integrität selbständig zu konzipieren und durchzuführen, und sind qualifiziert, diese Prozesse auch wissenschaftstheoretisch zu reflektieren.

Zukunftsperspektiven: Berufsfelder und Karrieremöglichkeiten

AbsolventInnen des Doktoratsstudiums Mathematik üben leitende Funktionen in Forschung, Industrie und im tertiären Bildungssektor aus. Sie arbeiten vor allem als MathematikerInnen, in Firmen für Telekommunikation und Informationstechnologie, im Logistik-Bereich, in Banken, Versicherungen, statistischen Ämtern und Forschungsinstitutionen.

Darüber hinaus können AbsolventInnen Berufe ergreifen, in denen besondere Problemlösungskapazität und besonders geschultes analytisches und systematisches Denken nötig sind (z.B. im Management, Verwaltungsbereich oder in Consulting-Firmen).

Beschreibung des angewandten Notensystems (inkl. Notenverteilungsskala) »

Bei der Notenverteilungsskala handelt es sich um die statistische Darstellung der Verteilung aller positiv absolvierten Prüfungen, die innerhalb eines Studiums bzw. eines Studienfaches (unter Heranziehung aller gemeldeten Studierenden eines Studiums bzw. eines Studienfaches) erfasst wurden. Die Notenverteilungsskala wird in regelmäßigen Abständen aktualisiert.

Die Mathematikstudien an der Universität Wien bieten eine hochwertige akademische Ausbildung als Vorbereitung auf eine Karriere in Wirtschaft, Technik, Verwaltung oder Forschung. Zentrale Elemente der Ausbildung sind das Erlernen mathematischer Denkweisen sowie die Bearbeitung mathematischer Fragestellungen in Theorie und Praxis.

Das Studium

Das Studium ist in drei Teile gegliedert: Eine Pflichtmodulgruppe (90 ECTS), die Wahlmodulgruppe Foundation-Module (50 ECTS) und die Wahlmodulgruppe Specialisation-Module (30 ECTS). 

Die Pflichtmodulgruppe der Core-Module vermittelt den Studierenden in den ersten drei Semestern die inhaltlichen und methodischen Grundlagen sowie mathematische Denk- und Ausdrucksweisen.

Die Wahlmodulgruppe der Foundation-Module, die für weiterführende Spezialisierungen in verschiedenen Bereichen grundlegend sind, bietet den Studierenden eine erste Wahlmöglichkeit: Aus den 7 angebotenen Wahlmodulen sind nach Maßgabe des Angebots 5 auszuwählen.

Die Wahlmodulgruppe der Specialisation-Module bietet den Studierenden eine breit aufgefächerte Wahlmöglichkeit, von mathematischen Vertiefungen bis zu sehr anwendungsorientierten Fächern: Es sind nach Maßgabe des Angebots Wahlmodule im Umfang von insgesamt 30 ECTS auszuwählen; es besteht die Möglichkeit, 15 ECTS durch ein Erweiterungscurriculum zu ersetzen. 

Den Abschluss des Studiums bildet das Bachelorseminar (10 ECTS), in dessen Rahmen auch die schriftliche Bachelor-Arbeit zu verfassen ist.

Nach dem Studium

Die Fähigkeit, an komplexe Problemstellungen flexibel und kreativ heranzugehen, systematisch Lösungskonzepte zu entwickeln und diese fachgerecht zu kommunizieren, wird von der Wirtschaft stark nachgefragt und ermöglicht den Absolvent*innen eine sehr gute Positionierung am Arbeitsmarkt. Die universelle Ausbildung eröffnet eine breite Palette konkreter Tätigkeitsbereiche, die von technisch-wissenschaftlichen bis zu kaufmännisch-administrativen Aufgabenstellungen reichen.
