At The Presentation Designer, we’re serious when it comes to harnessing the power of colour in presentation design. It’s a good thing, too, as colour theory and psychology play massive roles in the potential impact of your slides. 

Josef Albers’ famous book,  Interaction of Colour , is testament to that fact: a comprehensive guide on the principles of colour theory that’s been in circulation since the 60s. 

Age certainly equals wisdom, here, because Albers’ in-depth manual – which discusses everything from colour relativity to the illusion of transparency – is chockablock with all the information you’ll ever need to know about using colour. You’ll be the Picasso of presentations in no time.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

• Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
• Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
• Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
• Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

Nike revealed a range of new styles and silhouettes for elite athletes last week ahead of the 2024 Olympics, but one article of clothing has raised controversy.

A bodysuit that appears to be cut high on the hips is one of the options for Team USA's track and field. Athletes and fans have criticized the design, saying that the outfit looks uncomfortable and revealing.

Complaints further mounted after Citius Mag , an online magazine that covers track and field, released a side-by-side comparison of the men's and women's uniform — with critics finding the vast differences deeply problematic.

In response to the criticism, Nike said female runners are not limited to the leotard and that the new line offers nearly 50 styles to choose from, including shorts.

"We showcased some of the new Olympic uniforms at the Nike On Air experience in Paris — but, as we are a few months from the Games and working with limited samples in a limited format presentation, not all looks and styles were featured," a Nike spokesperson said in an email.

The company added that it took female athletes' comfort especially seriously, which is why it raised the neckline for tops.

USA Track and Field said its athletes were consulted throughout the design process. "Athlete options and choices were the driving force for USATF in the planning process with Nike," the USATF said in a statement.

Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, said she supports athletes having options. "I think that's important. We want to make sure athletes have choices that they're comfortable in," she told reporters.

Why MLB's new uniforms are getting mixed reviews

The backlash comes less than two months after Nike was scrutinized over its new uniforms for Major League Baseball players, which some said looked see-through and of poor quality.

This time, Nike's designs were caught in the long-running discourse over sexism in women's sports attire.

U.S. national champion distance runner Lauren Fleshman said the track and field kit specifically displayed on the mannequin lacked the professionalism that top women athletes deserve.

"Women's kits should be in service to performance, mentally and physically. If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men would wear it," she wrote on Instagram .

On social media, some fans asked if the mannequin outfit was for swimming events. Others expressed concern that the fit will sexualize sportswomen, given the uniforms' lack of coverage.

Pole vaulting Olympic gold medalist Katie Moon said while the uniform was troubling, she is in favor of female athletes having more options rather than less when it comes to attire.

"Even if its with best of intentions, you're ultimately attacking our decision as women to wear it," Moon wrote on Instagram . "The point is we DO have the choice of what to wear, and whether we feel the best in a potato sack or a bathing suit during competitions, we should support the autonomy.

Before the backlash, Nike said the uniforms were the "most athlete-informed, data-driven and visually unified the company has ever produced." The clothes were tailored to support a range of body types and sports disciplines while maximizing breathability, Nike Chief Innovation Officer John Hoke said in a press release Thursday.

Nike also plans to provide custom tailoring at the games.

The twenty-first century is the era when populations of cities will exceed rural communities for the first time in human history. The population growth of cities in many countries, including those in transition from planned to market economies, is putting considerable strain on ecological and natural resources. This paper examines four central issues: (a) the challenges and opportunities presented through working in jurisdictions where there are no official or established methods in place to guide regional, ecological and landscape planning and design; (b) the experience of the author’s practice—Gillespies LLP—in addressing these challenges using techniques and methods inspired by McHarg in Design with Nature in the Russian Federation in the first decade of the twenty-first century; (c) the augmentation of methods derived from Design with Nature in reference to innovations in technology since its publication and the contribution that the art of landscape painters can make to landscape analysis and interpretation; and (d) the application of this experience to the international competition and colloquium for the expansion of Moscow. The text concludes with a comment on how the application of this learning and methodological development to landscape and ecological planning and design was judged to be a central tenant of the winning design. Finally, a concluding section reflects on lessons learned and conclusions drawn.

Luxury Linens Get the Thom Browne Treatment

The designer plans a sleepy presentation of his new collection for Frette.

“You’re going to have a long two hours of watching people sleep,” Thom Browne said of the Tuesday evening event that will launch his collaboration with the luxury linen company Frette during Milan Design Week.

In his fashion shows, Mr. Browne typically works with the idea of uniformity and monotony to change the way people look at something familiar — such as his gray suits for men. Here, he will apply the same treatment to bedding. “There’s the idea of almost taking something that’s mundane and, I think, making it interesting to people,” he said in a video call.

The dramatic presentation of Mr. Browne’s new bedding and coordinating items may call to mind the 58-year-old designer’s show, for his Fall 2009 men’s wear collection. Then, 50 men identically dressed in truncated gray suits and khaki overcoats entered in rows and, cued by the ringing of a taskmaster’s bell, performed workaday activities like typing and eating lunch. No chitchat. No music. Then, after about 14 minutes, the men departed.

For Thom Browne by Frette, there will be six twin-size beds made up with the new products, each with a model resting on top. The models will enter in their underwear before fully dressing in gray suits with ties and even tie bars and then climbing onto the beds.

“The models will not be required to be actually asleep and will likely not be; however, if they choose to take a nap they most certainly could,” wrote a representative of Mr. Browne’s company, in an email.

“Initially, I wanted 50 beds, but then logistically getting a space for that was not working out,” Mr. Browne said. The room he settled for lies within the Palazzina Appiani, a neoclassical building in central Milan. The little palace was built in the early 19th century as a private space for Napoleon and his court. Its ornate decorations are in stark contrast to the minimalist bedding.

Mr. Browne said he loves that people will come to the invitation-only event, called “…time to sleep…” and expect something to happen when, in fact, nothing will happen.

“And that little bit of discomfort, I think, is funny and interesting and it’s almost like the music that I use for my shows,” he said. “A lot of times there’s a grating aspect to it that almost kind of drives you crazy. And I just like that in a way.” (The room will be filled with the “everyday sounds of sleeping and lullabies,” according to his office, and Mr. Browne was expected to contribute additional songs and sound effects.)

Why would he want to make people uncomfortable? “I think everybody nowadays wants so much to happen and they want things to keep moving and they want things to be quick,” he said. “And I like to do things slowly and almost not as much to happen and not as quickly.”

The collection, which is on view to the public at the Palazzina, Wednesday through Sunday (the beds will be there, but not the models), consists of cotton sateen sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases, in white with gray piping; towels, a bath mat and a beach bag in terry cloth; a gray cotton velour bathrobe; and gray wool-and-cashmere blankets and a decorative cushion. Many of the items feature Mr. Browne’s signature four-bar design.

“Any collaboration I do, I feel like I want it to feel just real and authentic to what I would use myself,” he said. He has designed home products for Baccarat and Christofle and owns crystal and silver from both companies. And yes, he said, he uses Frette linens.

Paolo Casati, a co-founder of Studiolabo, which oversees the promotion of many exhibitions connected with Milan Design Week, noted in an email that fashion brands have made housewares incursions into the festival for more than a decade, starting with early actors like Marni and Giorgio Armani and evolving to include Bottega Veneta and Dior.

“It has become an international reference point for promoting a cultural lifestyle, where product design, fashion, art, technology, architecture, automotive and material research all take center stage at the event,” he said. The fashion presence has expanded the international audience for the design week as a whole, he noted, “both financially and through their ability to create immersive installations and experiences.”

The collaboration with Mr. Browne marks the first time Frette, which was founded in 1860, has worked with a fashion brand. So what took so long?

Filippo Arnaboldi, Frette’s chief executive, said in a video call that other fashion companies have come knocking, but none had “the right DNA or the right image that could have really been complementary.”

Any partner needed to be a stickler for quality and attention to details, he said. But Frette was also looking for access to lackluster markets. Thom Browne “is very, very, very, very strong in Southeast Asia and China,” and Frette is not, Mr. Arnaboldi said, and he hoped some of that allure would rub off.

Asked if he wore clothing designed by Mr. Browne, Mr. Arnaboldi stood up and gestured at his navy blue suit, smiling. He was also enthusiastic about Mr. Browne’s eccentric showmanship. “It is something we have never done and you would not expect from Frette, this presentation with models with the beds.”

As is typical, Mr. Browne declined to employ an outside stylist or choreographer. “I like to almost die on the sword myself,” he said.

An earlier version of this article attributed an erroneous distinction to Thom Browne’s 2009 fashion show in Florence. It was his first fashion show in Europe, not the first in his career. The error was repeated in a picture caption. The models were photographed on location, not digitally added in a rendering.
