THIRD  TERM SCHEME OF WORK FOR JSS2

CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES

WEEK ONE: REVISION OF LAST TERM’S WORK

TOPIC: THE PASSION OF CHRIST

TRIUMPHANT ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM (THE PASSION) MARK 11:1-11, MATTHEW 21:1-11

Jesus had started His earthly ministry for good three years. He has been going from one place to another preaching, teaching people about the kingdom of God.

During the Passover festival celebration in Jerusalem, Jesus wanted to go down to Jerusalem. As He was going with His disciples, they passed through Samaria and entered Jericho. When they came near Jerusalem to Bethany at the mount of olive they stopped there and He sent out two of his disciples to Bethany to bring back to Him a colt of an ass which had never been driven by anyone. He told them if anyone should challenge them, their reply would be the Lord needed it. And after use, if would be sent back. They went and found the colt and they brought it to Jesus.

The disciples and other people who were there began to throw their garments on the colt and they dressed it comfortably. Jesus Christ set upon it, they formed a procession and they were moving slowly towards Jerusalem. The people threw their garments and palm leaves and spread them on the road for Jesus to ride over on the colt the people were happy and were excited.

They were praising God. The people who came from different towns and village to celebrate Passover were delighted at the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and joined the people to cry out saying; “Hossana, Blessed is he who came in the name of the Lord, I blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hossana in the highest.” Mark 11:9-10. People were happy, singing jubilation that the messiah and saviour had come to them. The whole city of Jerusalem was excited because of the song of praises rendered to God as a result of Jesus’ entry. When Jesus entered into Jerusalem he went to the to the temple. It was already late and he went back to Bethany with His disciples.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EVENT

1. Jesus is the messiah of peace and not that of war. Colt is a symbol of peace while horse is a symbol of war.

2. Jesus is the saviour of the world because originally Hossana means sure help or praise God who come to save.

MORAL LESSONS

  • Christians are enjoined to take active part in celebrity palm Sunday. It commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ. It is the symbol of peace.
  • Praising God with our belonging does not leave anybody. Both elders and youths, men and women threw their garment on the road for Jesus ride. Over use what you consider very important to you to honour Jesus

Assignment:

1.       Mention two  significances of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ?

2.       At what period did the triumphant entry of Jesus take place?

3.       What was the chant to Jesus by the people during his triumphant entry to  Jerusalem?

THE CLEANING OF THE TEMPLE

MATT 21:12-17, JHN 2:12-21

When Jesus entered the temple, there were lots of activities going on which includes buying and selling, exchange of money etc. This displeased Jesus Christ  and he drove all the people hat sold and bought  out of the temple and overthrew the tables of money changers as well as the seats of those who sold doves. After he had driven them he then said to them “It is written,  my house  shall be called the house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.”

The cleansing of the temple by Jesus was not a mechanical exercise but spiritual. The temple represents the house of God where God’s presence stays and so should be highly recognized as such.

MORAL LESSONS OF THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE

  • The house of God is a sacred place, Christians should not desecrate it.
  • Christians should not underestimate the house of God and do things that are illegitimate in it.
  • God is not happy with anyone or people who make the house of God unclean with activities displeasing to God.
  • God refers to our bodies as the temple of God, in the same way He demands our righteousness and purity.
  • Narrate  the story of the cleansing of the temple.

2. State three moral lessons of the cleansing of the temple.

TOPIC: THE LAST SUPPER

LUKE 22:7-20, JOHN 13:1-12, MATHEW 26:17-30

Edudelight.com

Jesus also celebrated Passover with his disciples. He sent peter and john to go and prepare the Passover.

Jesus told them where to go and get the Passover prepaid.

These are the materials of Passover:

  • Unleavened bread (bread without yeast)
  • Body of Christ
  • A year old lamb without blemish
  • Allow no sin in your life
  • Bitter herbs
  • Agony of dying on the cross
  • Wine: Blood of Jesus

So the two appointed disciple got a place, got everything set, it was the last supper they took with Jesus on earth.

When the time came to eat the Passover they came and sat down in the prepared room. Jesus told them that it was his wish to eat the Passover with them before he died. As they were eating, He took bread and thanked God, them broke it and gave it to his disciples.

He told them that the blood was representing His body and gave them. He told them to always do it in remembrance of Him. And after the supper, he took the cup and when He had given thanks, He gave them and said “Drink of it all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Luke 22:20).

When the Supper ended, Satan had already entered into Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon to betray Him into the hands of sinful men and would be punished.

Jesus then took a bowl of water and began to wash the feet of His disciples and dry them with the towel. Normally, one would expect the washing of the feet to be the work of a servant and not the master. When it was the turn of Simon Peter, He said to Jesus, “Lord are you washing my feet?” John 13:6. Jesus told him that Peter did not understand what He was doing but they would understand later. Jesus had set down the good example of humility.

If Jesus Himself could wash the feet of the disciples no reason who they should not wash each others feet. And after the Supper, they sang hymns and then left for the mount of Olives to spend the night.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SUPPER

God set Israelites free from political bondage.

1. The Passover was instituted to commemorate their freedom. Jesus gave the Passover a new significance. It has something to do with the spiritual liberation from sins.

2. Jesus gave the commandment that it should be done in remembrance of him

3. The Last Supper represent the sacrificed death of our Lord Jesus Christ that saved the world from sin.

4. The Last Supper is commonly called Holy Communion or the Eucharist. Some Christians normally do it on Sundays or on special occasions.

5. As many times as we do that we have fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ and one another.

“This is my body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me”.

1.       Mention  three  significances of  the Last Supper.

2.       Mention the materials used for Passover.

TOPIC: THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST OF JESUS CHRIST

Jesus suffered more than any evangelist during His three and half year’s of earthly ministry. Towards the end of His ministry the persecutors did their worst, and finally His disciples betrayed and disappointed Him.

THE ARREST OF JESUS CHRIST MARK 14:26-52, MATTEW 26:47-56)

When Jesus and His disciples had finished eating. The Last Supper, they went straight to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus had already known what would happen to Him there he told His disciples that they would run away when He would have been arrested. But, Simon Peter said no to that and promised to be with him even to the very end.

And Jesus did not hid it from Peter. He told him plainly that he would deny Him.

“But Peter said to Him, even if all are made to stumble yet, I will not be. and Jesus said to him, truly I say to you, that today even this night before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times”. (Mark 19:29-30)

But Peter spoke more vehemently saying if it meant he should die with Him, he would not hesitate to die, instead of him denying. They came to the Garden of Gethsemane and He told His disciples to sit down in a place while He would go a little to pray. He then took three of His disciples namely, Peter, James and John and Jesus was distressed.

He began to worry that one of them would betray Him. He was referring to Judas Iscariot. He left the three disciples and went a little further from them to pray. He started to pray to the heavenly father pleading if possible to remove this cup of suffering. Jesus said “Abba father, all things are possible to thee, remove this cup rom me, let not what I will but what thou wilt”. Mark 14:3-6. Really Jesus made the prayer of agony.

The cup he was referring to is the awaiting death on the cross. But despite the terrible and unbearable situation coming to be fallen on Him, He still maintained that only the will of the heavenly father should be done.

Jesus told the three disciples to be praying where He asked them to stay. He said to them, “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit truly is willing but the flesh is weak”. Mark 14:38. Meanwhile, Judas had already concluded his work by collecting money from the enemies of Jesus to show him to them. He collected the sum of thirty pieces of silver to betray the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Then Judas Iscariot His betrayer, seen that He had been condemned was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priest and elders”. (Matthew 27:3)

Judas arrived with crowds in the Garden of Gethsemane and kissed Jesus in the darkness to show the enemies who to arrest and immediately Jesus was arrested.

Peter was ready to fight and deliver Jesus from the hands of His arresters, he drew out his sword and cut the ears of one of the servants of the high priest. But Jesus spoke against such action and he healed the cut ear immediately. Jesus answered Peter that His arrest was to fulfil the plan of God and it was to give salvation to the world.

Narrate  the betrayal and the arrest of Jesus Christ. WEEK SIX

TOPIC: THE TRIAL OF JESUS CHRIST (MARK 14:53-72, 15:7-15, MATTHEW 26:57-75)

The enemies of Jesus took Him to the high priest’s house, the members of the ruling council had gathered to try Jesus.

The council, comprised of scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees and priests. They all accused Jesus of wrong doing. There were four major offences levelled against him and they were:

1. He said He would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. The temple which took them many years to complete.

2. He called Himself the son of God and they knew Him to be the son of Joseph and Mary.

3. He proclaim Himself to be the messiah and they knew Him to be professional carpenter and nothing resembled messiah in Him.

4. He did not respect the tradition of elders but He disregarded them. Such as law of cleanness and corban as well as law of Sabbath. According to the council, Jesus was found guilty of all the offences.

Therefore, he was due to die. The province of Judia by then was under Roman empire. The Roman governor posted then must try him and find him guilty before he could be condemned to death. So on the following morning, they took him to the governor Pontius Pilate, the governor found him innocent and he wanted to release him, but they shouted saying “Crucify Him”. (Mark 15:13). So the governor wanted to gratify the crowed, released Barabbas to them as demanded and then delivered Jesus to them to crucify. Oh, what an unfair judgement.

1. Explain how Judas betrayed Jesus.

2. Explain the trial of Jesus.

WEEK SEVEN & EIGHT

TOPIC: THE DEATH AND BURIAL OF JESUS (MARK 15:16-47, MATTHEW 27:45-61) (PETER’S DENIAL AND JESUS CRUCIFIXION)

After Jesus arrest all his disciples fled. A young man named John Mark followed Jesus and he took a linen cloth and threw it to cover the body of Jesus Christ already in the hands of his enemies. They wanted to arrest Peter with Jesus and he fled. Peter followed Jesus after his arrest at a safe distance to see where they would take Him to.

Peter latter denied Jesus three times before cock crew twice and he went outside and wept bitterly. That was the sign of repentance for denying Him.

REASONS FOR PETER’S  DENIAL

1.       Peter denied Jesus because he was afraid to die with Jesus.

2.       He  thought if he identified himself with Jesus he too would be arrested.

3.       He denied Jesus because he lacked the boldness and courage  of the spirit of God.

4.       He denied Jesus because he had not been empowered by the Holy Spirit.

5.       He denied Jesus because he was over confident of himself and he relied on his physical ability and strength.

After the governor Pilate had delivered Jesus into their hands to crucify, the soldiers led him away and clothed Him with purple cloth. They twisted a crown of thorns and then put it on His head. They began to make mockery of Him by saying “Hail King of the Jews”. (Mark 15:18). They struck Him on the head with a read and spat on Him. When they had mocked Him and maltreated Him, they took the purple cloth off and put His very clothes and led Him away to be crucified.

Jesus was asked to carry His own cross to Golgotha and when he became tired, a man called Simon, a Cyrene was compelled to carry the cross for Jesus and finally they got to Golgotha and Jesus was crucified and two criminals were crucified with Him.

One was on the left hand side while the other was on the right hand side.

Both the soldiers, Jews, priest, scribers were mocking Him even the criminal at the left hand side was mocking Jesus saying “If Jesus was truly the Saviour , He would save Himself and save them”.

When it was exactly twelve noon, the darkness covered the whole land until three 0’clock in the afternoon (12noon – 3pm). When it was three 0’clock, Jesus cried with a loud voice and said “Eloi, Eloi, lama Sabacthani” which was translated to mean “My God, MY God, why have You forsaken me”. (Mark 15:34)

Those who stood by when they heard Him said “Look He is calling for Elijah”. (Mark 15:35)Eloi Eloi lama Sabather” which was translated to mean “My God, mark (15:34) Those who stood by when they heard Him said “      Look He is calling for Elijah (mark 15:35) And Jesus cried out with aloud voice and said father into thy hands I commit my Spirit” immediately the curtain of the temple was torn into two and the centurion who was guarding him confessed and said. “Truly this man was the son of God.

Some women disciples of Jesus were in the place of crucifixion. They all sympathized with Jesus by crying, sad and wept bitterly.

After his death one man called Joseph of Arimathea a prominent council member came forward and demanded for the death of Jesus from the governor (Pontius Pilate)

His request was granted he took the body of Jesus and buried Him in a tomb belonged to him. He covered the entrance with the stone. The tomb was hewn out of the rock. The women disciples like Mary Magdalene from whom seven spirit came out, Mary the mother of James and Salome were there to see how the body of Jesus was laid.

SIGNIFICANCES OF JESUS DEATH

The death and suffering of Jesus has two major important meaning to us

  • Anybody born out of woman into this world is subject to suffering hardship, disappointment, betrayal, fear persecution and death. All this they are normal experience of life. We should be ready to face unpleasant aspect of life.
  • It was the suffering of Jesus that brought Salvation without shedding of blood there would be no removal of sins. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb that washed away the sin of the world.
  • Narrate the death and burial of Jesus Christ.
  • What are the significances of the death of Jesus.
  • Who denied Jesus and how many times was he denied.
  • 1.  State three reasons for Peter’s denial.

TOPIC:  THE BURIAL AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST

MTT 27:56-66, MK 15:42-47, LK 24: 50-56, JHN 19:38-42

After darkness fell on the land between the hour of 12.pm-3.00pm Jesus cried out and said “Father into your hands i commit my spirit and he gave up the ghost.

Immediately after the death of Jesus on the cross, there came a man named Joseph of  Arimathea who also was Jesus secret disciple, he went to Pilate to beg for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded Jesus body to be released to him.

Joseph had a sepulchre  which he had made for himself, on it no man had ever been buried, and when he had taken the body of Jesus he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and buried Jesus in his own tomb. He covered the entrance with a stone.

The women disciples of Jesus like  Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome were also there to see how the body of Jesus was laid.

What is Resurrection?

Resurrection is rising from dead. It is coming back of life again after Death Jesus Christ died and was buried on the third day. He resurrected from death.

Very early in the morning from the third day after death, the women disciples Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus and Salome went into the tomb. They carried spices along in order to anoint the body of Christ to preserve it from decaying.

But something wonderful happened when they gist to the tomb. The big stone rolled to cover the entrance of the tomb had been rolled away.

They began to wonder who might have come here to roll away the stone and taken away the body of Jesus Christ. Suddenly an Angel of God appeared to them, and said “Do not be amazed you seek Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified. He has risen, He is not here see the place where they laid him But go and tell his disciple and Peter that He is going before you, to Galilee, there you will meet him as he told you. “Mark 16:6-7). The women disciples went back to inform Peter and John ran to the tomb and found it empty. They went back inside the tomb, and sent the linen used to wrap the body of Christ. But they did not see Jesus Christ Himself. The disciples went away to their own homes.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RESURRECTION

1.  Jesus defeated death by His resurrection from dead.

2.  Jesus rejoiced over death because He is God in the nature of man.

3.  The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the hope of the world

4.  God raised Jesus from death to eternal life. He will raise us up also from dead unto eternal life.

5.  If Jesus had not rise from death Christianity is baseless, and there is no hope.

6.  Other religious have no assurance where they are going, after Death.

7.  The God of other religious died and remained in the grave.

Moral Lesson

Jesus Christ gained victory over death and rendered it powerless over man.

1.       Explain the role of Joseph of Arimathea in the burial of Jesus.

2.       Narrate briefly the story of the burial of Jesus.

3.       Define resurrection.

4.       What are the significances of the resurrection of Jesus?

   TOPIC:   THE GREAT COMMISSION

MTT 28:19-20, MK 15:14-15

The Women disciples had gone to the men disciples and delivered the message of Jesus to them to go and meet Him in Galilee. The disciples left for Galilee immediately. They got there and assembled on a mounted as there  were instructed. They were there patiently waiting for Jesus Christ to come. Jesus appeared to them.

GO and make Disciple (Mathew 28:16-20). Mark 15-18

When Jesus came to the Disciples, they all worshipped Him. Jesus then gave them the Great Commissioner concerning the preaching, Baptizing and teaching.

It is the wish of Jesus to disciple the whole world so that we can reign with Him in His kingdom. He said that to them “All authorities in heaven and on earth has been given to me, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observed all that I have commanded you and I am with you always to the close of the age (Mathew 28:18-20).

After given them this great commission he met them in different occasion in Jerusalem.

THE ASCENSION OF JESUS CHRIST Mark 16:19-20, Luke 24:50-53

When Jesus was about to ascend to heaven. He lifted His hands  and Blessed them, after letting them out of Jerusalem to Bethany. As Jesus was blessing them He was seen departing into heaven.

They were all looking up at Him until they saw him no more. They worshipped Him and went back to Jerusalem to Bethany. As Jesus was into heaven, They were all looking up at Him until they saw him no more.

Then, they worshipped Him and went back to Jerusalem with great joy and happiness. They were continually in the temple praying and blessing God.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION

If Jesus should come into this world, complete the work of salvation on the cross, them go and no one to continues, it would mean only the first century “generation would receive the salvation and no more.

The great commissioner gave them all authority to carry the work of the Gospel to all nations. They were to preach the Gospel, baptize the converts and teach/train them to become disciples as well.

Once the people repent from their sins they are to be admitted into the Christian Community through water baptizing. So after the baptizing, they have become full members of the church.

The news comers into the Christian Community must be disciple also to make them be the spreaders of the Gospel.

IMPORTANCE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION

1.  To spread the gospel to every corners of the world.

2.  To continue the work of salvation from where Jesus stopped.

3.  The great commission is the first task of the church.

4.  The great commission takes to the world the gospel of salvation of Christ where Christ couldn’t get to during his stay on earth.

5.  The great commission is important because Jesus himself commanded it.

  • What was the great commission of Jesus to his disciples before ascension and how is that applicable to today’s Christians?
  • What are the significances of the great commission?
  • Mention two importance of the great commission.
